as a Sid Girlie™ it amuses me highly that my absolutely favorite penguins games I've ever attended have all been about geno. the 11-2 barn-burner against detroit in 2022 when he scored a hat trick; his 1001th game the very next season where I had friends in town and we lost our shit and roared with the crowd chanting geno geno geno as geno went out and won the whole damn thing in the shootout, and now this: getting to take one of my favorite relatives to her first hockey game and getting this ridiculous, topsy-turvey chaos game that resulted in two milestones and a cornucopia of fandom joy. I love this guy so so so much. he is the reason I get to watch the most entertaining hockey of my life. he IS the show.

The Tin Can Bros (a comedy trio and makers of live theatre, digital sketches, webseries, you name it! You might know them from all the work they’ve done with Starkid—founding Tin Can Brothers Joey and Brian played Ron and Quirrell in A Very Potter Musical) are launching a brand new season of projects, most of which contain QUEER MAJOR CHARACTERS AND THEMES. These guys have got gays, they’ve got lesbians, they’ve got trans and gnc characters, they’ve got wholesome first love and Hannigram levels of fucked-up toxicity. It’s a whole cornucopia!! They’re planning to produce work in Los Angeles, NYC, London, Edinburgh, and Adelaide, but there will be digital tickets so you can watch where ever you are!

We’ve got:

-Two Rocky Horror-style concerts of the cult-hit, spy-movie parody musical Spies Are Forever. Gay protagonist who will sear himself into your heart! Seriously, his relationship with fellow spy Owen will emotionally destroy you for at least seven years.

-A concert of the developing musical This Could Be on Broadway, which follows a group of high school kids putting on a production of The Matrix: The Musical (not a show in real life) in their theatre department. A bunch of the central kids are canonically some flavor of queer, and there’s a central, very sweet lesbian romance that includes a trans character. She’s played trans actress Esther Fallick, who also worked with TCB as a consultant to make the character and show as authentic as possible. Seriously, if you want to see a trans teen thriving in their own skin, this is the show for you.

-An Edinburgh Fringe Fest production of The Solve It Squad Returns, a Scooby-Doo parody that follows the parodic versions of the Scooby Gang when they reunite as fucked-up adults to finally confront the almost-twenty-years-past traumatic murder of their dog Cluebert. I promise it’s funnier than it sounds. Esther, the Velma-esque super genius, is gender non-conforming and identifies with they/them pronouns. They also have a girlfriend WITH a boyfriend!

-A workshop reading of the QUEER SCI-FI TELEVISION COMEDY PILOT Intelligent Life. Unlike the other projects I’ve mentioned, this one is new to the TCB fans, but will follow a pair of ex-boyfriends forced to survive together in an extra-terrestrial colony. From the sound of it, there will be plenty of queer supporting characters as well. This frankly sounds like it could be tumblr’s dream show, and it’d be great to support its development.

-The Great Debate—a live comedy game show where comedians debate silly things. While this obviously won’t have narrative gay rep like the other projects, it will showcase gay talent (at the very least, Tin Can Brother Corey will participate in every show) and may include debates involving queer topics.

-Gross Prophets, in which three wannabe gurus/cult leaders lead a seminar on the path to enlightenment. This is a completely new stage musical so I honestly don’t know if it will contain any queer characters or themes. But the TCB queer track record is pretty good!

Guys, I’m so genuinely so excited by this season. But all this awesome queer art won’t happen unless we get their kickstarter funded. And they need our help! So let’s get fundraising!!

Flash Fiction Friday 5/23

Forgot to tag @flashfictionfridayofficial last week, so I'm doing it first this week! And this is...another week where I blew past the word limit. 🤦‍♀️ I'll do better next week, promise! For now, though, I hope you enjoy this!

Sighing heavily, Ivy buried her fingers in her hair as she stared at the directive posed by the page in front of her.

"Write an analysis of the themes and symbolism found in the assigned poem. Three page minimum."

She huffed. Dumb. Like every other piece of high school drivel. No one in the real world cared if she could find a square root or spell 'mitochondria' or analyze a dumb poem. They cared about other things, like how-

"Hey, Ives; think I can eat this?"

-how much food your little brother ate.

"Zach! How many times I gotta tell ya?" Shoving her chair away from the kitchen table, Ivy rushed over to where her brother was salivating over a Tupperware of leftover lasagna. "No eating food not on our shelf!"

"But Ives!" He protested, holding the Tupperware out of her reach. "I'm hungry! And look how much they've got!" He indicated the Millers' refrigerator, deli meats and pudding cups and fruit bowls and Olive Garden bread sticks from three nights ago spilling over the shelves like a chilly Thanksgiving cornucopia. "There's no way they can eat all this!"

There really wasn't; she knew for a fact that probably half of the mouth-watering bounty would wind up chucked in the trash. But she took the Tupperware from Zach, ignored his whimper of dejection, and shoved it back where it came from. "Doesn't matter. You know the rules: they have their food, we have ours." That's how it always worked with the foster 'families.' (ugh; she hated calling them that),

"But look!" He indicated the sole shelf of fridge space the Millers' had 'generously provided' for them. It was depressingly bare. "See? We're food broke!"

Ivy sighed. Yeah, 'cause we're almost money-broke. But she motioned him to follow her to the door. "Guess we're going shopping."

She flipped the textbook shut as she passed it, huffing with rueful satisfaction as it closed on that stupid poem.

"Two roads diverged in a yellow wood…"

What did it know anyway?

She was waiting for Zach to finish up in the Seven-Eleven when she saw it.

FOR SALE, the flyer read from where it'd been sloppily stapled to a telephone pole. VINTAGE RACECAR. MOSTLY WORKING ENGINE. NEEDS TLC.

She read the lines over and over, hardly believing them, one refrain ringing through her head.

They could do that.

Her dad used to say she was 'a natural' mechanic. And, not to brag, she was pretty good. And Zach…he'd always wanted to be a racer, and she knew he had it in him to be the best. If she could just get that car and fix it up…

"Whatcha lookin' at, Ives?" Zach came up behind her, asking around mouthfuls of hard pretzels.

"Car for sale." She tapped the sign. "Looks pretty good; just needs some work."

Zach nodded, crunching away. His eyes took on a wistful light. "Too bad we don't have the money."

 Ivy bit her lip, looking again at the price tag scribbled in haste at the bottom. No, they didn't; they'd have to get some. But how…?

An idea clicked in Ivy's head, and she grimaced.

"I think I know a way…"

Sharkhead Eddie nodded approvingly as Zach whizzed around the track in the borrowed car. "He's good." He nodded, cigarette pinched between fat fingers; Ivy tried not to wrinkle her nose at the scent (ugh; she forgot how gross the guy was).

"So you'll give us the money?" Ivy asked, heart in her throat as she tried to not look too desperate.

"I said he races good," Eddie spat. "Not that I'd give you the money."

Ivy drooped, but she didn't let it show on her face. You never could when dealing with this crowd.

Planting a defiant hand on her hip, she smirked as Zach finished another lap . "What, afraid we’ll make Mack and Shorty look bad?"

Eddie ignored the jab, not taking his eyes from the track where Zach was rounding a distant corner at impressive speed. "Yer dad was good at racin.' Not so much at paying his bills."

Ivy's iron expression faltered. Yeah, she knew.

"How's I know youse two will deliver a return on my investment?"

Ivy swallowed and turned back to the track, thoughts racing faster than Zach as he floored it on a straightaway. How?

She scrambled for an answer as Eddie waited, feeling their shot slipping away with each passing second

She had to say something…

" 'Cause we're going all-in on this. Just racin' twenty-four seven."

A scoff puffed from Eddie’s lips. “What, when yer not doin’ homework? Sorry Petunia.” He straightened from the rail, jamming the cigarette back in his mouth. "No-"

”I’m droppin’ out of school.” The words left Ivy's tongue before she knew she’d said them. Shame seized her in that same instant, and she just barely suppressed the urge to curl in on herself.

It had been important to Dad, her and Zach getting a good education; a lifetime of being unable to so much as print his name had convinced him that his failure to earn a high school diploma was the reason he'd never been able to make it outta Southie.

"Don’t repeat your old man’s mistakes." He'd used to say when she groaned over homework. ”You’re too smart for that.”

The look on Eddie’s face changed. “No jokin’?” he asked, studying her.

This time she didn't hesitate. "For real."

Because diplomas didn't put food in the fridge. Hopefully Dad, wherever he was, wasn't watching.

Eddie looked at her a moment longer, weighing her words, then barked out a laugh that nearly had the cigarette tumbling from his lips. “You’ve got moxie, Petunia. I like that.” He stuck out his hand. “Sixty percent of your pro winnings until the loan’s paid off. Plus interest. Or else. Deal?"

Ivy stared at Eddie’s hand, hardly believing what she was hearing. This was it: their ticket to success. Sitting right there, waiting for her to take it.

Then...why was she hesitating?

Ridiculously, ironically, it was that damn poem that answered.

"Two roads diverged in a yellow wood…"

And like that the track fell away, replaced by a golden wood, Eddie's filthy hand melting into a path that forked down her feet, awaiting her choice.

She could see what lay down one: the track, awash in the heady scents of asphalt and gasoline, the roar of engines drowning out the roar of the crowd, and the shining rightness she always used to feel when Dad took her and Zach with him to the pits. She’d missed this world, of fast cars and adrenaline; they both had, and to leap back into it...it’d be like going back home.

And they both missed that even more.

And it'd give them a future. They'd be aging out of the system soon; they'd need jobs and money and this…this would solve that before it became a problem.

But a blackness lurked in the corners, a shadowy contrast sunlit scene, and in them she could see leaden pipes and steel bullets and the echoes of that horrible day.

Becoming a dropout wasn’t the only mistake Dad had warned her to not repeat.

She looked down the other; it wasn't quite as fair: the light was dim from overcast sky, the path bumpy and rough with too many trails- too many similar forks- branching off it, the way overall…hard.

And held its own perils, ones…she didn't know. But it felt solid, in a way that shining one didn't.

Which?

She blinked, and she was back at the track; Zach was taking a cool down lap, and Sharkhead Eddie was still standing there in front of her, waiting for her answer.

Ivy drew a deep breath; there really only was one option.

"Deal."

i do understand and acknowledge that most people who pick up mdzs and get really into it walk away from the experience with wangx!an brainrot that brings them joy and suffering (affectionate) in equal measure, and--unless they're assholish at me or my pals--i wish all of those people well and hope that the veritable cornucopia of wangx!an content on this webbed site and AO3 is everything they've ever wanted out of their fandom experience. wwx is the protagonist, lwj is his court-appointed soulmate, their happily ever after is what most people pick up the books wanting to experience, and that's, you know, fine. live your bliss etc.

i just hope that one day it won't be such a hot and controversial take for fans who didn't develop wangx!an brainrot, and who found something and/or someone else more compelling and engaging about the text, to be able to say as much, and talk about it as much as we want to, without generating a bunch of passive-aggressive--or aggressive-aggressive--commentary from hardcore wangx!an stans who seem to take our disinterest in the central romance personally for whatever reason. like genuinely i would probably not dislike wangx!an as much as i have come to dislike them if i hadn't been inundated with very rude reblog commentary or anon asks early on in my fandom experience just for saying /checks my notes, "maybe jin guangyao isn't evil, actually. maybe wei wuxian did some things wrong."

It's a murder mystery (sort of) with Vimes, Sybil and Vetinari in Gotham, and more than anything it's funny. or at least I think it is.

I am a huge nerd and love a whole bunch of different fandoms, but the current hyperfixations are HSR and LADS. However, I do dabble in Star Wars, Marvel, HTTYD, and DC occasionally.

Sometimes I'll take writing requests or offer to write something for someone, but please bear with me as I am pretty busy and have a lot of stuff to do outside of this hellsite and writing.

How's the selection process for this? If you are personally inviting lapsed big name fans into the fold then they surely are guaranteed a spot right?

Is that not then a kick in the teeth to the people who like kylux right now and still think about and make hux and kylo content still?

If they aren't guaranteed a spot then how does that work with personally getting invited?

For a fandom where I have seen people get dog piled for mentioning older stuff in fandom such as classic themes or enjoying going through the cornucopia of historic works, resulting in multiple people leaving the fandom, it feels very much like this event is doing exactly what so many people have been accused of by prioritising people and themes from the past over presently active fans.

It was planned as a chance to showcase kylux through the years, being a 10-year anniversary zine, and therefore there are a certain number of places for fans who are old and new alike. I'm also hoping a wide variety of content and themes will be represented. Any kind of dogpiling or anti behavior will not be tolerated. Period.
