It's time for the standard "I recently finished off this story, so here's a link for you to read it from the beginning if you so desire" post commemorating the completion of "Start At The Beginning...Sort Of!" My very first multichapter Valicer (sort of, they're not together yet) fic! I had a lot of fun writing this, and I'm looking forward to starting the next installment. :) I hope you're looking forward to it too!

Random question: I'm reorganising my digital library and I have this stray tabletop RPG character sheet floating around that I can't place. Does anyone recognise what game this is for? (No guesses, please.)
(If it helps, the PDF metadata indicates that the file was authored in February of 2021, though this isn't necessarily the release date of the game, and based on the form-fillable autocomplete suggestions, the stats in the upper right corner – RNG, Meta, System, etc. – appear to be rated by die size rather than as flat numbers.)

We're at the point where I have to reapply for my current job (because reasons--it's fine) and I got an email about the employment application this morning, expecting a link to a web form or a DocuSign or something, only to find an attachment for a 6-page non-fillable PDF that requires signatures.
I'm tempted to fax it back out of spite.
#on the bright side. i guess. it's probably not going to be immediately rejected by some AI bot#I guarantee I will spend more time getting all the text fields aligned and using the same size font#than I would if I just printed it and filled it out by hand#I'm grateful to have a job but like... at what cost??

what about Partially, for another reason. I know i'm either O- or A- because my dad is O+ and my mom A- and i and my sisters had our rhesus factors typed at birth because if it was positive, our mom needed an injection to prevent her antibodies getting to know the rhesus protein things and attacking the next positive baby. to my understanding.
*if you know/have confirmed from multiple sources, pick the first one you experienced
#this reminds me to ask for my data from the bone marrow registry thing#and find out which of the two options it is#because they typed me#but it's like a non form fillable pdf i need to fill#and email#to get them to tell me#bis speaks

Obiyuki Madness: The Betting Pool
Back by popular demand, the Obiyuki Comm is once again hosting the Madness Betting Pool! Predict the whims of your fellow shippers, and win the contents of the kitty!
From today, 2/1 to Thursday, 2/6, you may download your own copy of the Madness Bracket and submit your predictions using this Sign-Up Form. You do not need to be planning to participate in any other part of Madness to play!
How Do I Edit the Bracket?
The bracket is a fillable PDF– it should be as easy as downloading the file and opening it with a pdf reader. However if it doesn’t work, you may feel free to edit in an imaging program (Photoshop, GIMP, Paint…) and send in the .jpg. Please try to enter the NAME of the trope, not the number– all heats are calculated by hand.
But What Do I Win?
You will be winning favors from your fellow gamblers! The sign-up requires you to put in two favors – these can be anything from making art, edits, playlists, fics, etc, to offers to edit or beta, or anything else you think your fellow shippers might enjoy! The person who wins the pot – either by being the only person who guesses the champion, or, in the event of a tie, gathering the most points for correct guesses, will get to select one favor from each person in the pot!
Guidelines
You must provide a valid Tumblr username in order to participate
You must enter two favors into the pot to participate
Favors must be all-ages appropriate (aka, do not jokingly offer sexual favors, or offer to write/draw NSFW content, or offer something that requires knowing personal real-life information)
Favors may (and are encouraged to) have stipulations – aka, write a fic of no more than 3K, drawing 1 sketch or sketch with flat color, beta for a fic of no more than 5K
It is up to the winner and the favor-owners to work out the details and timing of the favors, not the comm mods
You may only submit ONE completed bracket
All sign up forms must be completed by 2/4
If you have any questions or concerns with filling out brackets, or just want to brag about how good your bracket is (and talk about Obiyuki), feel free to join us on the Obiyuki Discord server!

Sorry for falling off of the face of the earth for a bit there
Make A Quick Reference
I’ve been quietly toiling away, making design alterations, doing formatting, editing, making character sheets, all of those lovely things that go into publishing a playtest. I’ve walked away from that experience a little wiser, new skills under my belt and an utter hatred for the process of creating form fillable PDFs. I’d like to share some of that hard-won wisdom today, particularly this:
YOU SHOULD MAKE A RULES REFERENCE SHEET FOR YOUR GAME. If it is any larger than two pages, your game needs it. I do not care what your game is, it can be a tactical combat game, an FiTD variant, some chaotic mish-mash resulting in an OSR Lovecraft game, you should make a Quick Reference sheet. There are a lot of reasons why, A LOT of reasons, but here’s 3 big ones:
It really helps GMs and players (this is the obvious one). Having a reference sheet during play makes the game faster, easier, and better.
It forces you to review, revise, and refocus the game’s foundation. You should be doing this regularly as part of the design process anyway, but creating a rules reference will often result in a stark reminder of what the central rules of your games are. If you’ve lost your focus a bit, you’ll figure it out pretty quick.
It exercises your ability to convey information concisely, a necessary skill for game designers and writers. If you’re not practicing conveying the necessary rules of your game in short form, you should be— and making a quick reference will be a wake-up call if nothing else.
That should be enough. If you are not convinced that you should make a quick reference, I cannot help you. Go, live in your blissful ignorance for eternity.
For those who have taken my message to heart, I’m gonna give you a few loose guidelines for making an effective quick reference. These are not hard and fast rules, just things that I use for myself to keep the sheet practical and sharpening.
Include core and common rules first and foremost. This is different for every game, but usually includes one or two important chapters (probably the first one). I don’t personally include character specific options, but to each their own.
Limit yourself to a 2 page spread / single sheet of paper. If you have multiple kinds of play, such as downtime rules or a separation between narrative and tactical play, feel free to create a second 2 page rules reference.
Use boxes and tables. Organize and section related information to the best of your ability.
Limit yourself to a minimum font size of 10 point. This is about the limit of readability on a printed page, for the purpose of accessibility.
Like all rules documents, write the first draft in pure text format.
That’s really it. At the end of the day, any quick reference is better than no quick reference. Whether you eschew these guidelines entirely or specify hard-and-fast rules is entirely up to you. That being said . . . MAKE A QUICK REFERENCE. And if you have a favorite quick reference, or implementation of a quick reference sheet, please let me know in the notes!
Self Promotion
Thank you so much for reading. I really just wanted to get something out, considering how long I’ve been absent. The free playtest for my stealth-action RPG, Footfall, is launching by the end of the day tomorrow! The game is going to include all player facing rules, the rules for enemy creation, and a playable adventure. If you want to be notified when it releases, you can follow me here or on itch at https://rotten-shotgun-games.itch.io. I also have a Discord server where I post about the projects I’m working on pretty regularly, which can be joined with this link: https://discord.gg/wcHnG4V5fH.
Once again, I hope you have a great night and a great day.

Preview: Character Sheets
You're probably going to want somewhere to put down your character information. To that end, I'll also be supplying Google Sheets-based character sheets for the Revue Starlight TTRPG, including the playtest!
Here's an example of the current working draft of the Challenger character sheet:
All the checkboxes are interactable, and, of course, you'll be able to type into the empty boxes and lines, replace the example text here, and so on and so forth.
I'd also like to create a form-fillable PDF (and, honestly, it'd probably be easier to design and work with), but my Adobe InDesign expired. Maybe sometime down the line?

Playtest draft 0.4 of Space Gerbils is up. I wasn't going to cut it here, but then I realised that I'd re-written the same page three times in as many days, which is usually a pretty good sign that I need to pump the brakes and talk to other people about it!
Nearly every part of every chapter has undergone substantial rewrites, so a complete changelog may take some time to prepare, but the highlights include:
Updated character creation, including nearly twice as many mech suit upgrades, and support for random space gerbil proficiencies; also, you now have to draw a picture of your space gerbil
Cleanup of protocol scopes and phase cycle workflow, including the removal of mandatory Threat Clocks and drastically simplified scene-ending triggers
Stress and conditions persisting across scenes deprecated in favour of new mechanics for handling long-term damage
Split downtime and away missions into two separate rules modules
Reorganised supplementary playsheets, and created form-fillable interactive versions where applicable (assuming your PDF reader software supports that kind of thing)
Additional print-and-play minifigs and interior illustrations by @artkaninchenbau (including the one up top!); minifigs now include lineart-only versions in case you want to colour them yourself
New mech suit schematics by @pencilbrony
Finally, by repeated popular request, there is now a Penguin King Games Discord server for submitting support inquiries and playtest feedback. I reserve the right to repost any interesting comments or feedback submitted there to other social media platforms for better visibility – don't say I didn't warn you!
As always, questions, criticisms, and bizarre flames are both welcome and encouraged.
