Final review of the Prime Wars Trilogy, here are my thoughts on Power of the Primes

So Combine Wars set the bar super low, and then Titans Return was a step in the right direction

Power of the Primes...while not as bad as CW (like I said, that one set the bar pretty low), I still wasn't really impressed with this. I went from hopeful with it, to extremely meh, and then at the end I kinda hate it a little

Maybe I'm just looking at it from a very biased perspective but this just...bothered me so much, and I'm not that hardcore of a TF fan enough to articulate why it bothered me so much

But I'm gonna try. Sorry if this is just turns into an all-over-the-place rant, but that's the only way I can convey my feelings on this:

Okay, let's start with something general about the series that I kinda noticed after watching TR. It seems like it just takes itself too seriously. From what I read, this trilogy was meant to be more mature but like...c'mon guys, this is Transformers we're talking about. It's a big elaborate marketing scheme. Why are we being edgy about it? I mean, even the Bay movies had their moments of silliness

It got to the point I started associating it to the '86 movie in regards to the character deaths. I'm not one to complain too much about death, I know there are times and places for it, but after the 4th one I was just like...okay really, was all that necessary?

It also pisses me off because they revived Optimus (who died at the very end of TR btw) at the very last second, but refused to revive all the other character deaths. Yes, Optimus is known to die and get revived, and we all love him for that, but he only gets revived because...somehow Solas Prime going back to being completely dead allowed the Matrix to revive him? I didn't...really get it. I'm trying not to be mad about it, but it was one of those things where I'm just like...bro you either shouldn't have died in the first place or you should have stayed dead

(ngl I'm just salty in general that Optimus was only here for 10 minutes, they only killed him off because it's just what you have to do)

Getting into the story, though, I don't think the plot was terrible, but it didn't hit right for me. Like I went into this thinking we were going to see all previous Primes coming together to stop Megatronus the Fallen, but no. Megatronus and Solas Primes were the only Primes we see (not counting Optimus, Rodimus, and Optimal Optimus). DID WE NOT LEARN FROM CW ABOUT FALSE ADVERTISING??? SMH

But even if it wasn't the worst plot in the world, some things just didn't make sense. Like how is mass genocide supposed to revive Solas Prime's spark? Is sacrificing every single spark of a transformer the requirement to bring back one Prime? And even then, when she shows up as a ghost thing everyone is still alive and kicking. Then they remove the artifacts completely from the machine keeping her spirit around AND IT'S STILL THERE

I MAY BE STUPID AND JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND, BUT IT BUGGED ME THE ENTIRE FINAL BATTLE

And Unicron is also involved because of fucking course we have to involve Unicron! And I hated it because he possessed Hot Rod the entire freaking time and made my boy kill people! To the point that in the end that trauma will stay with him and Optimus implies he'll never recover from the guilt!

AND ANOTHER THING ABOUT THAT ENDING THAT WAS STUPID

Moving on (no, sadly, I'm not done)

Another thing that kinda bugged me here was the continuity. I went into this thinking it was just its own thing and it would have sprinkles of references here and there like any other TF media I've been consuming. As I kept watching, it seems this is like a mashup of G1 and the comics (IDW in particular maybe? though some aspects seem to be taken from other comics). I don't think this is a bad thing, but there were moments where I found myself just being like...am I supposed to know this stuff?

I'm a basic enough fan that I know most of these characters and the lore, but there are so many things that I had to rely on a database for to better understand characters and plot. For example, during my watch of CW, I had to look up the Camiens to get a better idea who they were because I haven't touched anything they're a part of yet. And now here with Overlord, who was introduced in the Japanese G1 continuity before the comics picked him up, we learn that he associates with Unicron and The Fallen in order to get revenge on Megatron and I'm just sitting here like...revenge for what?

I wouldn't call this a very glaring flaw, as I'm sure this trilogy was made with hardcore TF fans in mind and not newcomers, but for anyone who is very new to the franchise, they won't have a lot of understanding of some things. Anything you don't know or if there are things you haven't heard of, you need to do extra research

Also I'm not a Beast Wars expert (as has been brought to my attention numerous times throughout my dive into TF media lol) but from what little I have gathered, the Maximals are like...meant to be descendants of the Autobots, right? But Optimus Primal here in this age guarding the Requiem Blaster for who knows how long? I know he won some kind of poll they did as promotional matieral, so maybe that's why they put him here? Or maybe there was a retcon somewhere in 40 years where he and other Maximals are around during the age of the Autobots, and they put him in this particular position because he's cool, I'm so tired of digging through the wiki to understand this stuff...

(side note: while it's cool that they got Ron Perlman to voice Primal (and apparently he plays him in the movie ROTB so that's cool), part of me wishes they brought back Garry Chalk to reprise the role. No disrespect to Ron, I just think Garry's cool)

Characterization-wise...honestly the only people I can really comment on are Megatron, Perceptor, and Grimlock. Perceptor is...Perceptor. ngl he kinda annoyed me during all of this, but he kinda annoyed me in G1 too so that tracks. And Me, Grimlock is always nice to see. You can't really go wrong with Grimlock tbh. It was super cool seeing him and the other Dinobots turn into Volcanicus

But for Megatron, I guess this trilogy was presented as some kind of redemption arc for him because he grew from regular antagonist, to anti-hero, to an actual heroic figure. He still has that typical Megatron attitude, so him being thrown into this position didn't feel forced to me. It was actually fun watching him at times. I just kinda wish Optimus was alive to lead with him. It would have been nice to see them working together and mending a friendship that the trilogy implied they did have (Optimus referring to him as his brother like in other continuities)

You all know my feelings about how they treated Rod...

Megatronus was kinda cool I guess, and his plot to bring back his lost love was interesting. It's just weird to me that it took him now after millennia of his banishment (which was apparently self-inflicted???) to think of this plan to revive Solas. What, did Megatron taking on his name and doing evil during the Great War in honor of the first Decepticon intrigue him so much he decided to put the plan on the backburner? It kind of was a long-game sort of thing but I still kept wondering why he chose now of all times?

Solas Prime...eh I guess? I think she's an interesting character, and her basically solving the conflict by being like, "If I'm dying I'm taking you with me because you're literally fucking everything up," was definitely something. I am confused on how exactly she died in the first place. Like the Requiem Blaster wasn't even facing her when it went off. It looked like it blew up the entire area but Megatronus--who was literally inches away from her--wasn't effected at all? I watched that scene twice and I still didn't really understand what happened...

Ugh, overall it was very underwhelming as a finale for the trilogy. The action didn't hit like in TR, and the plot dragged a lot for me. Maybe if you're a hardcore Optimus Primal fan you'd be into it, but I don't know him that well yet so for now...I missed Robot Dad, and Robot Son deserved better

hi i have an idea and if yall wanna hear pls do.

so, me and my friend were talking and talked abt what could've made the heros of olympus series better. mind you, we r now high schoolers, we first read the series in middle school, like 6th grade. also, they are aro/ace (ish, still questioning) and i like to write + i love valgrace.

(BTW IM DOING THE KEEP READING THING BC ITS LONG AND ID FEEL BAD IF U HAD TO READ ALL THAT WITHOUT IT)

so one of the things we decided would've made it more interesting was if piper and jason never ended up together, like at all. ik im a hardcore valgrace shipper, but my friend isn't and we agreed mutually that this didn't make much sense. their whole relationship was built on false memories and one quest, piper pining over him the whole time. we think that also would've enhanced pipers destiny as an aphrodite kid. an aphrodite kid who never dated in the most "important" part of her life, the main part we follow. an aphrodite kid who couldn't get the boy she'd loved. if she'd never dated, it could've really brought out more of the "aphrodite" part of her identity. i'm bad at explaining, but trust. it makes sense in my head. plus, it could show how she's this aphrodite kid who actually is a lesbian yall. which could've been a rlly interesting aspect, maybe some comphet.

one more thing is that whenever jason talks about piper, as his girlfriend, he comments on her physical aspects. as her platonic friend, he comments on her mind. idk if that makes sense, but when reading it, it felt more like how he'd compliment leo, or frank, or someone who was "just a friend".

plus, it feels weird that all of their friends are dating, maybe it could've caused peer pressure? like how leo felt, always being "7th wheel" (idk i came up with that on the spot)

the next thing was if leo and calypso never fell in love. as said before, im a valgrace shipper and they aren't, but we both thought this was an awkward and toxic relationship. the reason why, i'll get into later, but first i wanna talk about why it could've been better in the series.

we think that it could've been more impactful for calypso's side of the story. yes, i know calypso wasn't a great person in mythology, but we have to think of this from both characters perspectives. this is how my friend put it:

it could've been more impactful for calypso since it would've had an ending that was going against the god's curse of her falling in love with everyone on the island, but they couldn't leave. it would've been more interesting of the one person who did save her, was someone she wasn't in love with. the one person she didn't fall for was the person who actually came back for her.

that would've really made things more interesting for her story.

for leo's side, a (not important, but very hugely stated) part of his character is falling for people as a coping mechanism. idk the quote, but sometime in TLH, he talks about how he falls for people who are impossibly out of his league. ok, maybe this doesn't count as a coping mechanism, but it seems to be. sort of like attachment issues, always on the run since the people who did care about him died/left.

i think that it seems wrong (for rick to write, they could never make me hate you leo... with exceptions) for leo to fall for a girl who was "destined" to fall for him anyways. my poor boy. he'd gone through so much yall :(

and to the point of how caleo is sort of toxic, i haven't read much of toa, but i do find that they both cross boundaries.

for example, calling each other names they don't like. i find it VERY disrespectful for leo to call calypso "mamacita". i don't like her, but all girls deserve respect. she also states how she's told him not to call her that, and by the way he reacts, he knows.

similarly to calypso calling leo "leonidas". i don't have much information on this, but i'll link a tumblr post i read on this.

one thing, i think i don't like calypso much, but i will not hate her till 1. i've done more research and 2. have more evidence why. i feel it unfair, and i know many people don't like her. i'm also incredibly biased towards leo, so yeah. but, i will give her the chance till i have more information on the subject.

on that note, i don't like caleo. i quite hate it. but for good reason, from what i've talked about. it was just too forced and toxic, and not good overall. maybe it could've been if it was written different, but i hope u understand where i am coming from. ALSO! I feel like the reputation of videogames as art will forever be jeopardized by their very nature, of audiovisual experiences that explicitly have the audience participate and be part of it.

For all visual media mainstream success is almost entirely dependent on how good the experience feels, as audiences at large simply don't want to think; the most popular piece of any given medium at any given time is generally just bad because it's the lowest common denominator, that doesn't expect people to engage deeply with it.

Videogames are hit the worst by this because a good-feeling game - that is, an audiovisual experience that directly involves the audience and stimulates them in a good way - will just be treated by most as a toy, as a commodity: if the game can provide that adreline surge, satisfaction in mastery, sexual gratification and what have you, whatever story the game might be trying to tell or whatever theme it might be trying to explore will at best simply not matter and be ignored by most players, and at worst it will be seen as an annoyance, a pointless diversion from the "meat" of the game.

(The most prototypical example of this in my mind is any FromSoftware game, their combination of engaging and challenging gameplay and subtle narrative that is up to the player to engage with has resulted in them getting appropriated by "hardcore" gamers that laugh at how "incomprehensible" and "irrelevant" the story is to the experience, that will look at you like you sprouted a second head if you genuinely value it as integral to the experience)

Companies know this perfectly well so they market accordingly, either by highlighting how cool and shiny and powerful the new console is and how much Stuff it can do, and how big and pretty and exciting its games will be, or by talking about how much Every Leaf is individually rendered or how you can see the pores on the Hollywood Actor's face while he talks; and these games do get criticized, but almost exclusively as products of mindless entertainment, there's hardly ever a mainstream discussion about the game's themes and what it's trying to convey, most people either don't care or are actively hostile towards the idea of Politics In Games.

But the way videogames can interact with the player as art is so interesting! Their defining characteristic of active player participation is so unique from a storytelling perspective, no other form of media has it and therefore games can tell stories in ways no other medium can. Even games that focus on gameplay and enjoyment first and foremost (which I love btw, I don't want to seem like I don't) can convey messages and ideas through their gameplay, simply by virtue of having the player do and think things and look at stuff.

As things stand now games are simply too commodified, too tied to their nature of products of the entertainment industry for customers conditioned to mindlessly consume and not think challenging thoughts; in a very real non-too-hyperbolic way, for games to be seriously seen as art, mainstream commercial gaming needs to fall and crash completely.

As an art form, games have a huge problem with being seen as disposable content, both by executives and by players. Videogames are like the comic books of audiovisual media. Sure, maybe there's a cool moment now and then, but if you bring it up in a discussion of art, you're almost always gonna get laughed at.

Writing in games is always gonna be undervalued compared to books or tv shows cause with any game there's gonna be a percentage of the audience that just doesn't care. Unless your game is like a visual novel, people probably didn't pick a game up for the story, and even if it is, some are gonna be skipping the dialogue. Gamers are insane. And executives know this, so games are almost never developed from a standpoint of "we're gonna deliver a really gripping story." No, they just care about having the most raytracing and visible pores, because that impresses investors. A game needs to be visually impressive first, and it needs to feel good to play second, and then maybe they'll worry about the writing at step seven or eight.

As someone who really cares about the progress of games as an art form, it gets me sad.

if it helps, punk's "don't tread on me" shirt doesn't *really* have anything to do with the gadsden flag or thinking libertarianism is a cool ideology. for him anyway. its bc it's one of the Cro-Mags most well-known songs, and they're one of the most influential old-school hardcore bands to pioneer the genre on the east coast and they also helped invent crossover thrash. they're pretty inescapable if you're into tough guy hardcore at all, and its not surprising that an oldhead in the scene punk's age would be repping their merch on and off for the last 15 years or whatever. as far as the band's own politics, they're pretty inscrutable, if they can even be said to have any beyond "getting mad at stuff." which is, again, typical of a band in that genre of that era. reading the lyrics for a song like See the Signs will have you going well that's pretty progressive, plus they've played alongside Body Count. but then they also have a song about how abortion sucks. eyeroll. but then again i dont know how many people even know that track lol not to mention its over 30 years old so who knows if they still even think that way. Regardless, im certainly not saying side-eyeing/judging that choice in t shirt is incorrect to do lol im just giving some context. personally i just like to think about how for every shitheaded t shirt there's the equal and opposite hammer and sickle belt buckle he wore in the gulf of mexico match or custom printed trans flag collision girl shirt hehe

This fic seriosly needs more attention, it's so good 🙏 Written perfectly on all aspects, from plot to characterization, a great read that I highly recommend. But beware, not finished yet.

A good, decent fic. Written from Rex perspective, often angsty, but with a happy end.

5) Stronger than Fate series by hrtiu (Rated from G to T)

...you have opened my eyes to a vast universe of VintageBeef lore that I was unaware of. I knew about the New Hermit Order, of course, and the UHC invention, and I've watched a few of his CTM things but -- I will take all the info and lore you feel like giving out because Beef is amazing and my knowledge is so small.

So the thing is, right, until about 2016 I only watched two (2) youtubers- Vintagebeef for Minecraft and aDrive for Pokemon (and funnily enough both of them are named Dan irl). So I've watched most of Beef's videos over the years and have a general knowledge of most of his stuff, except because it's been like a decade I don't remember where most of the lore comes from XD

The thing with him is that he doesn't do Lore tm the way other mcyters often do lore- he doesn't have an extensive RP series to draw from like Grian, doesn't have a solo world with steadily increasing amounts of lore like Etho or Zisteau, and while he's played on SMPs and been involved in storylines before it's not really the focus of his episodes unlike with Evo or Legacy or Empires

So where does that leave us?

IRL, Beef always has multiple series running at the same time. Often he's playing on an smp while doing a singleplayer, often modded, series as well as a CTM or modpack with a group of friends. For example, right now he's playing on Hermitcraft, doing weekly Pixelmon and Building a Zoo episodes, and a CTM map with Slip. And to me, this translates to one thing: Beef is an adventurer. He travels frequently- he explores a world and when he decides he's done, he leaves for the next one. That's the basis of my personal interpretation of his series and his character for my writing.

Ok so reading this back, this got extremely long and didn't explain much in the way of lore, somehow? If anyone has any additions to add please do so, I am very definitely leaving out a lot and would love to see what other lore people remember and are using for Beef! I didn’t include the Hermitcraft stuff since my memory of season 4 is blurry (his base was themed after the Martian, that much I know, and he and Iskall were buddies :D) and most of the s5 NHO lore is best watched from Bdub’s perspective from what I remember, and the only s6 stuff is a single line in Hermitgang and then the Area 77 arc with its possibility of an NHO reunion which we did not get rip. And s7 of course had the cloning machine and also the Podzol Party as the main lore. So all the original rambling is still below the cut though it is very long, and I'm gonna bullet point the main stuff here instead:

Actual canonical things:

Invented UHC and was the only survivor of the first ever uhc (Mindcrack UHC s1)

Married to an ender dragon (one of the UHCs I think), later father to a different dragon (Mindcrack season 3? I think?)

Might not have legs if you choose to take that joke as canon (Mindcrack s2)

Was a wizard (RAD)

is a zookeeper (Building a Zoo) 

Had a wife and kids (Sims in Minecraft)

Part of the Trial of the B Team court case (Mindcrack)

NHO founder, founder of the Podzol Party (Hermitcraft)

Created a cloning machine that sort of works (Hermitcraft)

Played the Forest which is I believe the first time he and Keralis played together (look up the trigger warnings for this one, it's a horror game)

Was the creator/owner of Sourceblock SMP (featuring some familiar faces if you know Legacy, Empires, or MCC) and there is literal magic from a mysterious sourceblock of water that teleports people and summons mobs and probably more stuff that I haven't seen yet since I'm still watching it myself

Things you can infer:

Good with animals (Life in the Woods, Pixelmon, Ark)

Is a car nerd (irl and all of the car games he's played)

Is a highly experienced adventurer who has traveled through dozens of worlds both vanilla and modded, across multiple dimensions (Twilight Forest, the Aether, the Betweenlands, Limbo), completed dozens of monuments, fought in blood sports, survived apocalypse after apocalypse, tamed dinosaurs, and played a lot of prop hunt and golf with your friends

If you're looking for what to watch for lore purposes, I'd say the Mindcrack UHCs and Team Canada's RAD series are pretty good, definitely Sourceblock and HC s5, plus the Diversity CTM maps and Ruins of the Mindcrackers maybe? And Mindcrack Prank Wars for the chaos and the origin of Team Canada. And if you can handle horror than the Forest is fun and if you don't do horror you can watch the Pojkband play golf or prop hunt they're hilarious I love them sm I want a Pojkband reunion So Bad 

Beef's first series was a singleplayer series in beta 1.4_01 though he had played the game extensively before that, and was a big fan of Guude, having watched his own Minecraft videos. The series was functionally a hardcore one where if he died Beef would delete the world and start again! I haven't actually Watched this series so idk if he died or how often lmao. When Guude made Mindcrack, which was btw one of the very first Minecraft SMPs, he also hosted a competition for people to join, and Beef submitted a video (which is still viewable on his channel I believe!) and won, and was added to Mindcrack in season 2 :D (fun fact, Guude said that even if Beef hadn’t won he would have added him anyway) 

Two running jokes emerged from Mindcrack- pulling a Vintagebeef and Beef doesn't have legs. The first is a reference to Beef dying of fall damage (I believe the exact instance was him trying to jump into his swimming pool and failing spectacularly) and after the incident, every time someone died of fall damage they were pulling a Vintagebeef. The second joke comes from Guude, who joked that the reason Beef wasn't going to a convention was because he didn't have legs, and then he pranked Beef's base by building a giant pair of legs at the entrance to his castle so you had to walk between them to get into the base. This joke has long since died and both Beef and Guude feel pretty bad about it iirc because there were people who genuinely thought Beef was disabled and were emailing him supportive messages and stuff oops. So if you go looking on the Salad or find old Mindcrack fics, you might see references to Beef having prosthetic legs!

Mindcrack also brought about the creation of several Player groups- Team Nancy Drew, Team Canada, and GOB to name a few relevant to Beef. Team Nancy Drew consists of Beef, Pauseunpause, Guude, and Baj, who formed to investigate a prank on one of the members but I forget who. They're named Nancy Drew after the detective! Team Canada also formed in retaliation to pranks, with it consisting of Beef, Etho, and Pause, the three Canadian members on the server (not including Adlington who moved to Canada but never joined the group). There was also a Team America who pranked them with American flags everywhere. GOB is Guude, OMGChad, and Beef, who played stuff like the Ragecraft, Pantheon, and Monstrosity ctms together but that's way down the line lol

Team Nancy Drew is also notable for inventing UHC. It was Beef's brainchild but it was the four of them who first played it! The first UHC had the four of them working to kill the dragon with no natural regen, with everyone dying but Beef, who "won" the UHC. The second uhc was still dragon focused and iirc is where Beef married the dragon? Memories are hazy but they do kill the dragon in this one I think. UHC was then revamped as a pvp event and became a regular Mindcrack game every few months, featuring most of the Mindcrackers and several special guests, including Dinnerbone, who as we know Thanos-snapped Doc's arm out of existence as a result of Doc killing him in one of them

In one of the seasons of Mindcrack, Beef invited swedish Mindcracker and good friend Anderzel to go caving with him and invented ABBA Rules caving, where the winner takes it all. ABBA Rules is a game where each ore (and also dungeon loot like nametags) is assigned a point value and the person with the most points at the end wins and gets to keep all the stuff collected from the game.

In Mindcrack season 3?, Beef punched the ender dragon in an... awkward area, so when the dragon died and left the egg behind, Guude said Beef was the father of the egg XD I don't remember if I watched s3 so I have no idea if anything Happened with this concept but *history of the world voice* you could make lore out of this!

So Team Canada has played a Lot of CTM maps (which fun fact were pretty much invented by another Mindcrack member, Vechs, with his Super Hostile series! Super Hostile has a bunch of things called "Zistonian", which are references to another Mindcrack member Zisteau, who has a very wild singleplayer series with even wilder lore but I digress). In Ruins of the Mindcrackers, they had a running joke that Beef was Etho and Pause's mom, which is a joke we can leave in the past actually /lh. They also played all the Diversity maps, Sky Factory, Terra Restore, Uncharted Territory uhhh and a couple more ctms and adventure maps! Each map kinda has its own story so in Diversity 3 for example they were trapped in a simulation? I think? Team Canada also recently played the Roguelike Adventures and Dungeons modpack, aka RAD, in which Beef was a wizard with a magic staff that could do anything from summon lightning to control hostile mobs.

Sourceblock SMP is a vanilla survival 1.14 series that ran for one season and the series starts with each of the Players being drawn to a strange sparkling water source that, once they touch it, brings them to the Sourceblock world. It also summons a giant zombie at one point. There's probably more lore for this series but like I said I haven't watched it all the way through yet 

He has a Patreon server called VintageCraft and has done a series or two on there as well, and played a few UHCs with them, so lore that how you will! 

Beef also played a few popular mods, notably Pixelmon, Life in the Woods, and Feed the Beast, with LitW being singleplayer and the other multiplayer. He's also recently played the Zoo and Wild Animals mod a lot. He did a short series with the Minecraft Comes Alive mod where he married one of the villagers and had two children, so that's canon now :D he’s played a Lot of Pixelmon starting when the mod first came out iirc (he chose Turtwig in his first series and built a Grass gym, then made a Normal gym in another series in uhh 2016) and he still plays to this day. Quite a few Hermits played on his Pixelmon servers with him, like Wels, Etho, Iskall, Stress, Slip, Zueljin, and also Guude and Phedran (a Mindcrack adjacent player and creator of the LitW modpack) and a few Mindcrackers on the older servers 

Mindcrack and friends played a lot of other games too- 7 Days to Die, Ark Survival Evolved, Unturned, to name a few, so you can pull a lot of lore out of these as well. Speaking of friends and non-Minecraft games, Beef teamed up with Pause, Keralis, and Slip (a former Hermit) to play the horror game the Forest, which saw them stuck on an island trying to survive against terrifying mutated human... things. They played it a few times as the game updated but as afaik it's the first time Beef played with Keralis and possibly Slip and since the game starts with the Player's airplane crashing, that could totally be how Beef first met them in-universe 

I... think? that’s everything I mentioned in the tags? There is probably way more stuff I’ve forgotten that stems from inside jokes and things that happen within each series, but I hope that was a) helpful and b) at least somewhat comprehensible lmao

[obviously, late-season spoiler] So...why didn't UrVa try just yelling at SkekMal to stop flinging little people around, and see if that worked first...? As opposed to shooting first (*not* a warning shot, either) and THEN saying "OH HAI halfsie, long time no see and BTW, get away from them"? -_- I mean -- they 100% had the drop, right? They certainly could've already had their bow nocked and everything. It's not like 'Mal would've said "pfft" and kept going because hey, their light half could always *miss*. Frankly, I doubt the Hunter would've even attempted to flee with a Gelfling in hand like they did, *except* that UrVa was drawing serious blood already and well -- at that point, turning tail and chancing a shot in the back is still a safer option than sticking around to try and melee your equally-badass UrRu, who's already signaled that maiming the both of you is not only *A-OK with them*, but very possibly their preferred approach. Besides, you're still outnumbered, because the only combatant you've taken out yet is the Podling. (Mind you, the Podling in question is Hup, so that's actually kind of a big deal, but. :-) ) Rian's still good for another ten rounds; Heretic seems to be in literal shock so well-played on instantly neutralizing *them* -- yet, they still could have it in them to deal some well-timed blow to the back of the head even with their good hand impaled; and hell, one the others might always wind up cooking up a quick gambit with any of the piles of crazyass stuff lying around the place. There are an inconvenient number of vines. At minimum, SkekMal clearly did *not* fancy their chances in a straight-up duel with halfsie. Whether they thought it was the light or dark shard that'd technically "win," they must've figured that either way M.A.D. was the result. I.e. -- they had *no* standing assumption that 'Va would lay off the hurting and homicide at any sane point. That's...pretty hardcore. Anyways. *Especially* if you're hellbent for the sake of your dumbass Hunt on taking someone with you as prisoner, fleeing once you're already shot and bleeding does makes sense..........BUT not up *until* then. Up till then, from any normal perspective, there was a more than fair chance of getting SkekMal to blink first in the standoff -- to skedaddle for now, NO prize in hand, WITHOUT anybody having to 3/4ths murder them first. Because unwounded, they'd almost certainly have preferred to just heave-ho and wait for the damn Archer to go away, or fall asleep or be rebraiding their damn hair or something. And while that's for sure a dangling plot thread that'd come back to haunt everybody...there honestly wasn't a better plausible outcome than that for the good guys either. Forcing the battle then and there was not going well for anybody. From Team Gelfling's standpoint, far better to let SkekMal skedaddle and use the respite to do some preparation/teamwork for another face-off, or else figure out a way to elude their pursuit. After all you've got the one and only Archer, conscious and alive, to help with that now! So why shut off that whole avenue from the start, UrVa, my dear space dino? I mean you're a *Mystic*, aren't you? Not keen on violence? Practicing archery purely as a spiritual discipline and all that shit? Isn't it a bit...off-brand to jump straight to the serious puncture wounds, without even giving the other party a chance to stand down? And remember, Aughra said "confront" the Hunter...NOT "KILL." So a little weird, yeah? There's only two explanations I can see for this: 1) UrVa was just THAT incandescently certain that somehow the confrontation was going to end with them both dead, so they might as well skip ahead to that part; or, what I think is more likely, 2) their self-hatred was just jumping THAT far out ahead of their rational strategizing. Which makes this a fairly epic (not to mention tragic) case of Telling On Oneself. [NB: As always: ALL HC ARE VALID, this is just my fan theory]

looking at your question from my currently extremely clinical, well-hydrated perspective, tho—

i think you actually have a really good read on Taehyun! especially in regards to him being kind of reserved—when it comes to romantic/sexual relationships, he’d be very cautious with his feelings up until a certain point, but if you DO manage to get that far with him, then it’s all or nothing—like, following you out of the shire all the way to mt. doom kinda all or nothing. 🥺 and he's definitely the type to only get into d/s stuff with someone he really trusts (honestly, i don't think he'd even get too far along with vanilla physical intimacy without that level of trust, unless something had him really caught up in the moment). once you’re that person, though, buckle the fuck up cause you weren’t wrong about intensity. 😅

he'd take any kind of power play really seriously, even if you’re not interested in doing anything hardcore at first. he does a lot of research and wants to have serious, sit-down talks about what you both want and need, even if he has a hard time looking you in the eye for the first few conversations. it’s actually probably very sweet, because he tries really hard to make sure that you’re comfortable, even as you can see he’s clearly struggling.

Taehyun definitely starts things out sitting across from you at a table because that’s how Serious Grown-Up Converations happen, right? reach over and hold his hand, or better yet, make him move over to the couch with you to cuddle. he’s the type to get into his own head about this kind of thing, i think, so a reminder from you that this is something you’re both in together will go a long way towards him chilling the fuck out. especially if you’re older/more experienced than him—he won’t admit it, but he’s probably looking to the way you behave for cues and feeling like he’s got to try and keep up with you.

i think his personality would have him be slightly more inclined to dom, but inexperience might make subbing a little easier on him to start with; a lot of it would also depend on his partner. so basically, he’s switchy but distinctly dom-leaning. either way, he’ll want to go hard—while for some of the boys, i feel like d/s dynamics with them are more of a natural extension of your regular relationship dynamics, Taehyun would want them to be something distinctly different from your day-to-day. this isn’t a boy who goes halfway with things; whether he’s domming or subbing, he wants it to be exciting and intense and boundary-pushing. by the time the night is over, aftercare will involve putting one of you back together again.

once he’s confident he knows what he’s doing and (most importantly) knows how to read you, he’d honestly be a dream of a dom. he’s observant and careful, learns all your little nonverbal tells, so he knows what you’re feeling maybe even before you do, and uses that to play you like an instrument.

he’d be a really great partner for experimenting with, too, i think. unless it’s something that really squicks him out, Taehyun’s willing to try pretty much anything you’re interest in at least once. going to him with new ideas might be a little intimidating, because he’s more serious and measured, and not the type to immediately jump onboard enthusiastically like some people would *cough*Yeonjun*cough*, but he’ll always hear you out and never judge or shame you for what you want. even if it’s something he’s not that into at first, he’ll read up on it and look up videos; he’s the type of person whose response to “weird” kinks isn’t ‘what the fuck?’, but ‘what’s the appeal there?’, so he ends up rationalizing himself into a lot of new kinks, including most (if not all) of yours.

the only thing i would worry about is honestly him not letting you know where his limits are—he feels like the kind of person who would have trouble safewording when you hit a point that's uncomfortable for him in a scene, just because it's not something he brought up while you were establishing boundaries and rules. he’s the type to be very concerned about safewords and hard limits and aftercare for you, but forget that those things apply to him as well. if the way you two play gets really intense, you’re probably going to hit a point where you need to talk to him about being upfront and honest about what he needs.

You and Taka were very close. From the start of this sick, horrible killing game you were forced to play, you two naturally gravitated towards eachother. You formed an extremely tight bond in a very short amount of time.

A bond tight enough to spend almost all of your free time together, sometimes in each other’s dorm rooms or around the school.

But, with everything going on, Taka started to feel... A bit down.

The school... Wasn’t exactly a school. There were no teachers, no classes no schoolwork or homework. To most students, that would be heaven (if it weren’t for the fact everyone was trapped inside the school for the rest of their time), but for the Ultimate Moral Compass... It was almost torture.

Taka took a lot of pride in his hard work. The countless flawless grades and extra credit (that he didn’t even need, but got anyway), constant praise from his teachers and family for nothing but said work, it warped his sense of self-worth to the point that, if he wasn’t working or being successful, he didn’t matter.

And you took notice of that. You took notice of how he seemed to get more down with each passing day where he couldn’t study or show off his current knowledge.

And Taka started to get self-loathing thoughts about the whole situation. How he was useless, unworthy, or just a bother if he couldn’t work.

He knew this was unhealthy, but he kept it to himself for quite some time, until he couldn’t take having these thoughts anymore. He needed someone to talk to, and he knew you could help.

It was somewhere in the afternoon, around 6-7 PM, you couldn’t bother to look at the exact time. 

You heard a somewhat frantic knock at the door, and went to crack it open. Peeping through the opening, you noticed Taka’s tearful expression. 

You threw open the door, letting your friend inside, “Taka, what’s wrong?! Did something happen?!”, you panicked, closing the door after him.

“Are you ok, Ishi?”, you grabbed your friend’s hand, leading him to your bed. You both sat down, as you laced your fingers with his, not planning to let go, “Tell me what’s wrong.”

Taka ignored his quick heartbeat, as he told you about how he felt. His voice shook, and his vision was blurred with tears as he rambled about how useless he felt. If he couldn’t study, take tests or answer teachers’ questions, what was he even good for?

You pulled him into a hug, letting him rest his head on your shoulder. You debunked every bad word he said about himself, telling him how his talent and academic achievements didn’t define him as a person. He was a wonderful, caring friend who you were incredibly lucky to have, not some studying machine you expected to be the best at everything.

You knew how much he valued knowledge, so you suggested starting some new hobbies together like... Art, or chess, or sewing... Anything you could think of at the moment that would get you two to learn and expand your horizons.

Your touch and reassuring words comforted him... You were so considerate with your words and found a way to get him out of that low, low state so easily. You even wanted to try those hobbies with him! He never really felt so cared for. Your hand ran through his hair so delicately, he felt like he could melt. He never wanted to let go...

Byakuya was in the school library, as per usual. Reading a book about who-knows-what and trying to distract himself from the dark fog slowly forming in his head.

He was thinking about everything that was taken away from him. From his success and wealth, to his family’s Corporation, everything that he fought for and righteously owned... Gone. Probably forever.

It messed with him, it really did. He felt like all he went through to get to the top was worthless. That his years of fighting were wasted on nothing.

He tried to push these feelings away. Wallowing over the fact that he was trapped in Hope’s Peak until his damnation wouldn’t help his situation. He even tried to deny his sadness, and practically ran from his emotions, opting to distract himself instead. 

He was snapped out of his thoughts when he heard you call out his name. He loudly slammed his book shut, not even bothering to mark where he stopped at, then turned to your direction, coldly asking: “What do you want?”

Now, your relationship with Togami was strange. At least, from your perspective. He was self-centered, cold and difficult to talk to, but that’s part of the reason why he was so intriguing to you. You always tried to talk to him, even if he responded rudely to you every time. You noticed his very slight shift in nature when he interacted with you. He was still cold, yes, but it was almost toned down.

There was something about you that he found intriguing too. You always  had something to say to him, something to add, a comeback to an insult he may’ve thrown at you once or twice. He found you amusing, and certainly didn’t want to push you away.

You walked into the library, closing the door behind you, “I’m just here to check on you. You don’t have to be so sour about it.”

“I’m fine. Now leave, you’re distracting me.”, Byakuya tried to go back to his reading, planning to ignore you, but you proved that to be difficult by coming up to the desk, and sitting down on it.

Before Togami could tell you to move, you asked: “You doin’ ok? You seem sad.”

That... Took him aback. It was clear he didn’t expect your question.

He didn’t even know how to reply. Part of him wanted to talk to you, and the other just wanted to get you away from him. 

You hummed at his silence, then said, leaning over to rest your elbows on you knees, chin propped in your hands, “I can tell you how I’m feeling, if that would make you wanna talk about it.”

Byakuya sighed, “Fine, because I know you’ll keep bothering me about it if I don’t listen to you.”

You made him promise to talk about his own feelings btw it was an incredibly long, annoying and difficult process and he actually tried to leave the room several times but yOU CONVINCED HIM AND YOU DID IT GOOD JOB

Byakuya's superiority complex really said "no❤️"

And so, you rambled for a while. About how you felt, what you missed, what you wanted to do, and he listened. He may've looked somewhat disinterested, but it was far from that. He wanted to hear you, he was just too proud to fully admit it.

But when it was his turn to talk, he hesitated. He hesitated a lot, actually, and you had to convince him to speak all over again.

And he did! Of course, adding a lot of "I suppose"s and "maybe"s/"possibly"s to his sentences to distance himself from his emotions. He didn't tell you everything, but he did say a majority of his feelings. And... He really felt better.

Subconsciously, you went to pat the top of his head, telling him you're proud that he opened up to you.

Then you realized what you did.

"Oh, sorry! I probably shouldn't-"

As you went to pull your hand away, Togami quickly snatched your wrist, and put your hand back on his head, saying: "This- stays between us, understand?"

You smiled, seeing his rose-tinted cheeks, as your ran your hand through his hair absentmindedly.

As he went back to his reading, you two sat together in a comfortable silence, and a ghost of a grin appeared on his face.

... He could get used to this.

I’m very sorry it took so long to answer this! Hm, let’s see…why I ship these two…

The short version is, much like you, I guess, I enjoy their interactions, and the way the anime (I’ve never read the manga entirely, just bits and pieces) shows the progression of their relationship and the nature of that relationship e.g. their complicity when solving cases, their instant synchronicity.

End of short version...

Okay, hopefully this will be the only time I have to make the tedious ShinRan vs. ShinShi/CoAi argument, I mean most people find trashing on one ship the main justification for shipping the other, well that’s not going to be me because for a good chunk of two decades I’d shipped ShinRan, and probably I still sort of do, It’s just not what I “prefer” right now.

For a good part of the first half of the series, the anime did a good job at getting me invested on that couple all on its own but as of late, even after Ep928, it feels like the main reason why those two are now an official couple is because of the ‘childhood friends-to-lovers’ trope and nothing more. I’m only speaking for myself here, but my perspective on the characters’ relationships have been changing with the years and it’s just that the inevitability of ShinRan happening despite anything and everything kind of makes it boring and takes some of my investment from it, whereas Shinichi and Shiho – the only other female character I see him getting an interest on, non-canonically speaking – have the potential to be a more interesting/challenging pair due to the unpredictable shift in their relationship’s nature, because ShinShi happening is something no one would see coming…yet upon Haibara’s introduction, the anime gives (or at least used to, anyway) little moments that could give room to "possibility".

That aside, there is a shallow reason I would like Haibara to end up with Shinichi and that’s the fact of her character being voiced by Megumi-freaking-Hayashibara! I have a tendency to like certain characters because of their voices and I’m extremely weak for Megumi’s, especially the kind of voice she provides for characters such as Haibara (another example would be Anna from the Shaman King anime, but I digress^^u). So, I’d naturally want for her whatever she may want for herself and once upon a time that used to be to get Shinichi’s attention, so to speak. I could say she wanted to get together with him but she never pondered on that specifically. It always struck me as her just wanting her feelings to be acknowledged regardless of being returned or not.

That’s my view mainly from the Haibara-angle, as for Shinichi? I really think the guy needs someone like her, that can understand him in every level. Throughout the series Haibara’s done fairly good work trying to keep him grounded, always resorting to reason when making him see the recklessness of his actions. Yet, she goes against her better judgment to aid him on situations that are beneficial only to him, despite it could have dangerous consequences for everyone else involved if he messes up.

It goes to show that although she’s apprehensive to him going briefly back to his real body, she doesn’t dismiss that which is most important to him.

On the other hand Conan has a similar effect on her when pushing her to certain actions that would result in her overcoming a certain fear.

Also, ever since the Bus Hijacking Case, Conan’s righteousness (which she  admires, btw) has gradually been rubbing off on her and become the main  force for her wanting to take control of her fate and stop running from her demons. And it is through him – and subsequently the Detective Boys – that she gets a  second chance at a normal childhood, which turns her life for the better.

On another note, their banter is always fun to watch and whenever they tease one another it brings out their mutual understanding of each other. I think what I’m trying to say, what attracts me the most about them is the level of rapport they share and how it comes effortlessly, their gazes meeting (sometimes that’s not even the case, and still they know what the other’s thinking!), or their   matching smiles.

There are also specific actions they take for the other’s sake that simply pull me in. In Shinichi’s case, I just mentioned the Bus Hijacking episode: we know the crazy lengths he’s willing to go to protect those he cares about, but none of those occasions had such an impact on me as Conan grabbing Haibara and jumping through the glass seconds before the bomb goes off...

...moreover, he rubs his own blood on to her just so she can get away as fast as possible from whom,  at the time, they didn’t know was Vermouth and ensure she was safe. I  mean, covering someone with your blood just to ensure their safety? That is HARDCORE!

The defining moment on Haibara’s part for me, would be close to the end of the 2.5 hours Special “Head-to-Head Match with the Black Organization”: Haibara’s real confrontation with Vermouth…in one of the most intricate cases yet, Vermouth is finally revealed as been posing as Dr. Araide. I still remember the first time I saw that episode and I spent the next hour taking it all in. Lots of faces were unmasked on that one, literally and metaphorically, but if there’s a moment that stops my breathing whenever I see it is Haibara getting out of the cab, freezing in terror at the sight Vermouth. She’s visibly shaking but steels herself when she sees Conan and she just runs towards him.

You could say she’s taking a reckless risk (something not unheard of for Conan), but I see it as her finally facing her greatest fear (not counting Gin here) and taking charge in doing so – not in small part due to his influence either, mind you.

Sure, her showing up foils Shinichi's efforts to capture Vermouth in the end but that wouldn’t have been the case had they previously discussed the situation. It’s her fault as much as ‘their’ fault. I’m being realistic, they may understand each other all the time, but they don’t trust each other all the time. Their relationship is not perfect and I get that, I think it gives room to growth, something for them to work on, which they would manage together if given the chance.

Still, although they may keep things from each other, I have no doubt that when push comes to shove there’s no one they would rely on more.

Most examples like these are from the movies, which may not be canon to some, but neither is CoAi/ShinShi so, my point still stands XD

My attachment to this ship is the same as an on-and-off relationship, I like them one year, I might not the next, but to me they make sense, and I just enjoy them together.

Come to think of it, as impossible as them becoming a couple is, there’s always a “something” that pulls me back in and that’s amusing to me. Considering how dull things can get sometimes in life, I simply don’t take it for granted :)

can we talk about how felon votes are suppressed? I cant speak for other states because I dont 100% know the facts, but in Pennsylvania it is widely believed that felons can't vote. youre constantly told from the time you first break the law (if thats the kind of person you are, i am lol) "dont fuck up too bad or you won't be able to get a loan, get a job, or vote". tens maybe hundreds of people ive known have expressed upsettedness at the fact that they are a felon living in PA and therefore unable to vote. when I was put on probation, I was told I wouldn't be able to vote because of the felonies I was charged with.

but recently, I learned that FELONS CAN ABSOLUTELY VOTE IN PENNSYLVANIA. FELONS CAN VOTE IN PENNSYLVANIA. FELONS CAN VOTE IN PENNSYLVANIA.

but it is SO WIDELY believed that they can't. and I'm wondering if other states have this issue.

let's think about this though okay? think from the GOP's perspective: what is a felon? a rule breaker. differentiation from the norm. and probably dangerous (eye roll). while most felons Ive met are hardcore trump-necks (and/or just like totally normal nonviolent people btw) pearl-clutching conservative lawmakers are very out of touch with the lower class, and often think "felon" = "anti-law/dissenter". by widespread reinforcement of the inaccurate belief that all felons are permanently unable to vote, this leads to people who are in and out of the jail system never bothering to research politics and current events because (they think) they can't vote anyway. and/or just complete lack of votes that could've made a difference.

felons, I urge you to double check your states laws if you've ever been told you can never vote.

JOURNEY WITH KPOP, I'LL START

My history with kpop started when I was like, 8 and it was, (as of any other 8 year old during that time) because of Exo. But alas, we did not have the luxury of technology and a hand phone back then so I never really got to memorize what they look like, let alone their names. I "liked" them because of my cousin and you know how kids are with people they admire, I wanted my cousin to like me so bad.

Then I didn't see my cousin for a while and generally forgot about Exo because of my short attention span. Then years later, as BTS rose in popularity. I had the displeasure of witnessing a more than unfriendly banter on socials between two different fandoms and I realized how toxic some fandoms are, swore off of kpop. I actually despised it for a while because I hated being a basic bitch that thirsted over some korean guys.

Now I really hate how I was back then.

Then, the day it happened. The year? 2018. My sister introduced me to Seventeen. I reacted negatively to them at first of course, cause I claimed myself an anti towards the general clusterfuck of the kpop industry. But shit the first song she made me listen to just had to be Clap. And the moment my eyes landed on these 13 boys I instantly felt something tug at my heart because 'holy shit how are these guys so pretty?'

I then worked at memorizing their names.

I struggled at first. Obviously.( I couldn't memorize my classmates names and I see them on a daily basis, how the hell am I supposed to know the names of 13 people I've never met before in my life?) The solution was served to me on a silver platter when one day, I stumbled across a seventeen being crackheads video. It was perfect. With these videos, I got to understand these 13 boys better not from an idol perspective, but from a 'they are still humans' one.

For a good few months, I only liked Seventeen. I became a little crazed over them but it was still not crazy enough that I fell in love with them in a romantic sense or anything, I still had a brain mind you. Of course I knew nothing was ever going to happen and I was never going to meet them, least of all marry them. What am I? A sasaeng?

But, it was still only them. I still was aware of the other groups out there. Mostly that one that starts with a B that everyone at my school keeps obsessing over and I frankly find them slightly overrated, but I digress. I started exploring a bit. Expanding my horizon if you will. ONEUS was the next group I found but at the time they still had just debuted and I lost interest in them fairly quickly to my disappointment. (DON'T WORRY THOUGH IM A HARDCORE TO MOON NOW OKAT HWANWOONG THE BADDEZT BITCH) Back to exploring.

Of course if you love Seventeen you would have to know of their husbands, Monsta X. I tell you IM is very good at convincing me. Got7 was next. Fell in love with BamBam. Quickly realized I had a thing for rappers and the second youngest when choosing my bias because, Vernon and Jooheon could not have been a mere coincidence.

Seventeen, MonstaX, Got7, Exo, Kard, Astro, Blackpink, Twice, Red Velvet, Mamamoo, Ateez, TXT, Ikon, Super Junior, Stray Kids. I memorized all of them just for the kicks of it. Quickly became obsessed with all of them fairly quickly too.(Btw mamamoo made me realize I was Bi which was quite an interesting journey.) I even took a liking to the solo artists, like Eric Nam, Kim Samuel, Sunmi all that jazz. Even the actual kpop bands, Onewe, Day6, The Rose, N.flying.

All this, in the span of three years. I still do stay away from the big BTS, I'm just not quite interested in them no matter how much you try to convince me. Nothing against them though, they are quiet nice, I like their music, (but in terms of their faces I onky know what RM looks like) I just really dislike the amount of toxics there are in their fandom.

This year though, I decided to take on the biggest memorizing game of my life, that is the ever growing Neo Culture Technology.

I knew they had many members, I just didn't expect it to be THAT many. I am still struggling though. With Dream mostly. Doesn't mean I don't have problems with the rest. I already have no problem with 127. U is still confusing but I manage. WayV is.....um....

ANYWAYS thats my journey with kpop. I know, this was fucking long but I enjoyed it. I am still at work, memorizing some members and am currently trying to add The Boyz into my never ending list of pretty Korean, Chinese, Japanese, American and Australian men and women. Seventeen are still my number one group though. But stanning them makes me have slightly higher standards for choreos and synchronozations. Oops.

Now, as a multi, I feed off of, (live for essentially), the idols interactions with other groups. Which seriously makes me wish some fandoms would stop fighting cause it is literally helping no one when they fight. Because at the end of the day, these idols work night and day to please us, trained endlessly to get to where they are. And some of them are strapped down by contract to some soul sucking ent. company that sometimes would refuse to give them the tools to further their careers.

By fighting, it wards off potential fans because they think, if the fandom is this bad, what kind of people are the idols? Most of the negativity though is the ones against their idols dating. To which I say, who the fuck cares? Why can't you stand the people you admire be happy? (LIKE HYUNA AND EDAWN AND HEECHUL AND MOMO ARE THE FUCKING CUTEST OKAY) Because lets face it, they aren't going to date you. They never will. That's just reality. Can't you see how miserable they are? So many idols kill themselves due to depression and pressures from fans, how sad is that?

Have you seen Super Junior? Most of them are nearing their fucking 40s and they still aren't married. Thats so fucking depressing. Atrocious doesn't even begin to tell you how I feel about fans fighting for their so called oppas dating. Its irrational. Its insane.
