realising how much of my expansion beyond rock and metal into a wide range of genres is because:
Slipknot crossed over with the edgy/gothier end of 2000s hiphop
Disturbed are just like. The BIGGEST nerds for 80s British pop (they're not alone in that, it's a whole numetal Thing, but I think like a solid 10% of the 80s pop I listen to I first heard as a Disturbed cover)
Lady Gaga was the top 40 artist it was Okay For Edgy Alternative Teens To Like In 2007
Being an Alternative 2000s Teen was in many ways very musically stifling cause it was incumbent upon me to perform disdain for anything deemed too Pop.
I was somewhat rescued by my own gayness (when me and my gay goblin friends discovered CAMP!!!! and got semi-ironically big into Katy Perry and Rihanna and of course Gaga) but mostly I was so aggressively self-policing my music tastes and deciding what to listen to based more on my assessment of where it fitted socially than on whether I like. Liked it.
Catch 13 year old me studiously typing "punk" and "metal" into Limewire and listening to whatever came up. Catch 15 year old me assessing whether the fact that Rihanna is making music videos about murder in black lipstick means it's ok to like top 40 pop. Complicated by the fact that honestly half the biggest Alternative Teen bait acts of the 2000s were pop as hell, and that as above, numetal acts were nerdy musicians with a broad range of tastes outside metal, and it was very complicated for me. It probably took me until I was like 20 to really start to get a handle on what I personally liked musically, rather than what fit my persona (vividly remember being in a goth club when I was like 18 where they closed out the night with Leonard Cohen's Closing Time every time, and thinking like oh man am I allowed to like Leonard Cohen then? having been listening to Leonard Cohen since I was a literal infant.)
Once I let go of the sense of having to like the Right Music, I very rapidly developed very eclectic tastes and music became a really big part of my life. although my friend did recently still describe my music taste as "two genres - heavy and gay" so that 2000s alt teen is still in there big time.
I think it's a normal thing about being a kid. You're developing music taste basically from scratch and there's a world of music out there so it helps to start out with a narrow focus and build a solid few acts, albums or genres you really like and work out from there. But I do regret how much good music I missed out on first time around because even though I liked it I wrote it off for being rap or being too pop or too upbeat. But the good thing about music is that it doesn't go away! I'm still discovering a lot of music that I heard 50000 times when it was on the radio but never really listened to at the time. It's fun!
#red said#also i do think the fact that my family didn't really listen to music radio did change the ways i developed taste#it was talk radio or music my parents or us kids already owned so there wasn't like. a time i was listening to new music where#i wasn't also performing Teen Coolness for other kids. i mostly heard new music in the art room at school or in cafes or on coaches#whereas i know a lot of people who built their foundational music tastes really on from what was on the radio when they were kids#lot of people i know reminisce about hearing certain songs in the car to school etc and for me that's not music that's BBC Radio 4#idk i think it's really interesting that like. early developmental stage of music tastes#cause it's different for everyone. for most it's a patchwork of your family's music what your friends listen to and what's on the radio#as well as stuff you stumble on or seek out of of interest#and the balance is different for everyone. i think it says a lot about your experience of childhood#and i also think like for myself I'm often quite judgemental of child!me's basic and limited tastes#because i was pretty judgemental of myself at the time for not knowing Enough Music#and as an adult I'm like nah that's a pretty vital part of development. like you don't get mad at a baby for not knowing what words mean.#you have to start somewhere! when you're 14 you've only had 14 years to listen to music and for most of that time you weren't choosing it#and you probably haven't been going out to gigs or record stores off your own back. you're going with friends or family's recommendations#so like as a teen i knew my parent's music. i knew my brother's music. i read Kerrang! and listened to stuff my friends suggested#but it took time to build up that solid foundation to go 'what i like is a hefty beat/ bass and a lot of energy. i will find more of that.'

remmick and the vampires present a false dichotomy
Hogwood (the man who sold the twins the mill) and the KKK are very obviously bad, they are outright malicious bigotry, they use the n-word and plan to lynch the moore's and their community, they are so blatantly racist and hateful it's unavoidably obvious
remmick and the vampires however say that they believe in equality, say that they want to create a community, and yet remmick's goal throught the movie is to both metaphorically and literally steal sammie's ability for his own goal of reconnecting with his irish ancestors, a white man wants to harm a young and upcoming black man and use talents for his own goals without giving any regard to said black man's autonomy or agency
when sammie sings 'I lied to you' in the juke joint and calls forth the spirits from the past and future, it's a blend of cultures; west african, east asian, native american, and african american song and dance blend together across time and space to tell the stories of blues; where it takes its inspiration from, the music genres it then inspired, the complex history of black american culture and its intersections with other peoples of colour in the USA
when remmick and the vampires kill and turn the people in the juke joint, and then perform rocky road to dublin, only remmick's irish culture is on display, there is no influence from the black and asian people he has forcibly assimilated into his song, it's juxtaposition with the earlier scene is blatant, remmick is more than happy to assimilate people of colour into his 'community' of 'equals', and yet its only whiteness that is celebrated, that is normative
remmick claims that he's doing people a favour by turning them immortal, conviently ignoring that he literally has to suck the life out of them to do so, trapping their spirits on earth, he claims that he's the good guy, that the KKK were gonna come and lynch everyone at the joint in the morning anyways, conviently ignoring that he's doing the exact same thing; a white man leading a mob to kill a bunch of black people
in the final confrontation with sammie remmick repeatedly dunks him into the river, a forceful baptism. both the celtic irish and enslaved west africans had their religions suppressed and destroyed by colonialsm, had christianity forced upon them by the british empire, and in that scene we see remmick repeating that cycle, using christianity to inflict harm, and sammie reclaiming christianity, despite all the complex emotions he has arround it, as many colonised peoples have and still do, when he recites the lord's prayer
remmick and the vampires are no less racist than hogwood and the KKK, are no less predatory or evil, they're just less blantant about their bigotry, they represent the system, the normalised white supremacy that is seeped into the very foundation of culture in america, the point isnt that remmick would call any of the black characters in the movie the n-word, i dont think he would, the point is that his exploitation and desacration and inserting-himself-into-when-he-wasn't-invited of the juke joint is a microcosm of what white people have done to black american arts and culture since ever since there have been black and white people in america, and even before that
theres a reason vultures are shown early on in this movie

The Jay and Linda Grunin Center for the Arts | Toms River’s Cultural Heartbeat
Tumblr media
Located on the campus of Ocean County College in Toms River, the Jay and Linda Grunin Center for the Arts stands as a vibrant hub of artistic expression and cultural enrichment. From symphony performances and Broadway-style productions to comedy shows and local student showcases, the center offers a dynamic variety of programming that brings people together through the power of the arts.
Whether you're a longtime resident, a student, or a first-time visitor to Toms River, the Grunin Center provides a first-class performing arts experience in the heart of Ocean County.
Historical Significance
The Grunin Center is a relatively modern addition to Toms River’s cultural scene, but its impact has been significant. The center is named after Jay and Linda Grunin, philanthropists and arts advocates who have supported numerous initiatives in Ocean County and beyond.
Their goal was to expand access to the arts and enhance community development through creativity, education, and entertainment. Since its founding, the center has become a beacon for both emerging and established talent, and a venue that has helped revitalize arts programming in southern New Jersey.
Connected to Ocean County College, the venue also serves as a training ground for young performers, technical crew members, and arts students. It represents a marriage of education and community arts, embodying the Grunin Foundation's mission to invest in creative public spaces.
Best Time to Visit
The Grunin Center offers a full calendar of events year-round, making it an ideal stop in any season. However, certain times of year offer especially rich programming:
Fall and Winter (September–December): Often packed with musical theater, seasonal concerts, and popular traveling performances.
Spring (March–May): Features student showcases, graduation recitals, and performances by local and national artists.
Summer (June–August): Offers workshops, youth programs, and occasional special events. Though slightly quieter, this is a great time for family-friendly shows.
To ensure you don’t miss standout events, check the official event calendar on the Grunin Center’s website or sign up for their email newsletters.
What to Do at the Grunin Center
Whether you’re attending a live performance, taking a class, or just exploring the arts scene, there’s something for everyone.
1. Attend a Performance
The heart of the Grunin Center lies in its state-of-the-art 464-seat theater, which hosts a range of shows, including:
Musical performances (jazz, classical, rock, and world music)
Broadway-style productions
Comedy shows and spoken word
Dance performances
Children’s theater and puppet shows
Renowned artists and local performers alike grace the stage, so whether you’re a fan of famous names or emerging talent, there’s always something new to experience.
2. Support Student Talent
Ocean County College students often perform or assist with productions at the Grunin Center. Attending a student production is not only entertaining but supports the next generation of artists, actors, musicians, and technicians.
3. Join a Workshop or Class
Throughout the year, the center and college offer theatrical and musical workshops, including classes for youth, adults, and aspiring performers. These programs may focus on acting, stage production, music composition, and more.
4. Enjoy Art Exhibitions
Adjacent spaces within the center often feature rotating art exhibitions, showcasing regional painters, photographers, and multimedia artists. These exhibitions are usually free and open during box office hours or event intermissions.
5. Explore the Campus
Ocean County College’s campus, where the Grunin Center is located, is peaceful and scenic. It's an enjoyable place to stroll before or after a show, and often hosts community events and fairs throughout the year.
6. Meet the Artists
Many performances include opportunities for talkbacks, meet-and-greets, or artist receptions. These offer unique insight into the creative process and allow for personal connections with performers and directors.
Conclusion
The Jay and Linda Grunin Center for the Arts is more than just a performance venue—it's a cornerstone of Toms River's cultural life. It connects professional artistry with community spirit, blending education, inspiration, and entertainment in a space that welcomes everyone.
Whether you're looking for a night of high-quality entertainment, eager to support local talent, or seeking to learn something new through the arts, the Grunin Center delivers. With accessible ticket pricing, comfortable seating, and a diverse range of programming, it invites people of all ages to experience the arts in meaningful ways.
In an era where cultural institutions are more important than ever, the Grunin Center proves that creativity and community go hand in hand—and that world-class arts experiences can thrive right here in Ocean County.

MultiVersus Is Back In Action This May
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/multiversus-is-back-in-action-this-may/
MultiVersus Is Back In Action This May
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MultiVersus, the Warner Bros. free-to-play crossover platform fighter, makes its big comeback on May 28. The game has been rebuilt and returns almost a year after its open beta was taken offline.
Player First Games game director Tony Huynh explains in a developer diary that MultiVersus has been remade from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5, meaning it sports improved visuals and lighting. It also has a totally revamped netcode to provide what Huynh promises will be consistent online performance regardless of platform.
Every existing fighter sports new attacks and combat mechanics, and Huynh promises that new fighters are on the way. Additionally, new stages were teased with concept art depicting arenas based on The Powerpuff Girls’ Townsville and Dexter’s Laboratory.
Lastly, Huynh reveals a brand-new PvE mode is coming to the game. He doesn’t go into detail, only teasing it will offer “additional ways of playing with unique rewards.”
[embedded content]
MultiVersus was first launched in open beta last May and pits characters across Warner Bros. stable of IPs, such as DC, Looney Tunes, and even Game of Thrones, in a tag-team-focused twist of Super Smash Bros. inspired combat. The game was initially quite popular and generally well-liked. Writer Bryan Vore gave the game’s beta incarnation an 8 out of 10 in our review, writing that “Living games have the potential to go in frustrating directions, but MultiVersus has a strong foundation. If it can meaningfully roll out content and smooth out its rough edges, this could become a new crossover obsession for years to come.”
Unfortunately, months of infrequent updates and lack of communication following the game’s second season saw engagement decline. Player First Games pulled MultiVersus from stores to address these criticisms. When the game returns, it will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
Are you looking forward to jumping back into the new and improved MultiVersus? Let us know in the comments!
