James & Alice’s friendship

I’d like to imagine that James and Alice had a pretty close relationship.

Imagine young Alice having a crush on the cool, popular class clown. And her ecstasy when that boy started talking to her during quidditch practice.

That crush gradually disappeared as she got to know him better when a certain Frank Longbottom caught her eye.

James surprisingly noticed her glancing at Frank in class and blushing every time she spoke to him. So sometimes James would call him over to them and pretend to have a sudden interest in frogs, just to get the two talking.

And it worked. Bonding over a common love for frogs was apparently all they needed to fall madly in love with each other. 

Alice repaid him some years later when she, after years and years of watching James try to woo a certain redhead and her pretending not to be interested, took Lily aside and talked some sense into her.

She told her that James wasn’t just a pretty boy with a shallow personality. She told her how much loyalty and kindness lay beneath that somewhat repelling surface, that James had such a big heart and how you get used to all his stupidness with time.

On the weekends they would always meet up in Hogsmaede, when Remus and Sirius sneaked off to snog somewhere and Peter refused to leave Honeydukes, and spent the rest of the day in Madam Puddifoot’s tea shop, which James had Alice swear to not tell a living soul about.

Alice broke that promise not two days after their first visit, as revenge for James outing her overwhelming love for Barry Manilow.

She got teased about that one for weeks, while James’ secret didn’t appear to be as shocking as she and James had anticipated. Apparently, Sirius and Dorcas did the same thing, and no one seemed to really care about it unfortunately.

Alice was also probably the only one, apart from Remus and Lily, who could make James sit down and shut his mouth.

She figured out how to do it after that day in the courtyard. When James was about to throw a Dungbomb at an innocent first year for the third time that recess, and Alice, being half french, subconsciously muttered some delightful, french vulgarities under her breath. James stopped short and immediately cowered back to his seat, looking very intimidated.

After that day she made sure to mutter them a bit louder and a bit more often and it worked like a charm every time.

alice longbottom’s maiden name is never actually stated anywhere,,, and yet we all headcanon it as fortescue??

but just imagine:

neville comes to diagon alley the summer before third year to buy his books for term and finds harry eating ice cream outside of a nice looking shop

he goes over to catch up, and harry explains that he was staying at the leaky cauldron for the summer, and i don’t know why either, neville, but fudge insisted, and frankly i’m relieved to be out of the dursleys’

they continue chatting and harry explains that lately he’s been coming to the ice cream parlor everyday, and the owner, florean fortescue, has been giving him free ice cream, and—neville? why are you looking at me like that?

florean—florean who?

fortescue, harry replies, and neville looks up at the storefront to see “florean fortescue’s ice cream parlor” printed above the window and his heart skips a beat and he tells harry that he’s going to take a look inside

he goes up to the counter and and a man stepped out looking genuinely happy to see him

“hi, how can i help you today?” he says with a smile, and neville seems to be too stunned to speak

he finally takes a deep breath and spoke

“hi. i’m neville longbottom, and i—”

“neville?” florean’s eyes grow wide, “neville longbottom?”

“yes,” neville says, surprised that anyone knew his name

florean comes out from behind the counter and puts his hands on neville’s shoulders with tears in his eyes

“neville, i’m your grandfather,” his face breaks out into a grin that neville’s mirrors and by golly if anyone were to walk into the store they’d notice immediately that this man and this young boy have the same smile

and he continues, “i have thought of you every single day for years. i remember you as a baby, but you grew older and i don’t think your grandmother approved of my chosen career, so she distanced us, but i have never stopped thinking of you. i knew that one day we would meet again.”

neville is at a loss for words

“my daughter was alice, and i still visit her regularly, but it pains me how little you know of her”

florean ushers neville over to a table and sits him down, abandoning the ice cream flavors and beginning to tell neville all the stories he never had a chance to
