alice longbottom’s maiden name is never actually stated anywhere,,, and yet we all headcanon it as fortescue??

but just imagine:

neville comes to diagon alley the summer before third year to buy his books for term and finds harry eating ice cream outside of a nice looking shop

he goes over to catch up, and harry explains that he was staying at the leaky cauldron for the summer, and i don’t know why either, neville, but fudge insisted, and frankly i’m relieved to be out of the dursleys’

they continue chatting and harry explains that lately he’s been coming to the ice cream parlor everyday, and the owner, florean fortescue, has been giving him free ice cream, and—neville? why are you looking at me like that?

florean—florean who?

fortescue, harry replies, and neville looks up at the storefront to see “florean fortescue’s ice cream parlor” printed above the window and his heart skips a beat and he tells harry that he’s going to take a look inside

he goes up to the counter and and a man stepped out looking genuinely happy to see him

“hi, how can i help you today?” he says with a smile, and neville seems to be too stunned to speak

he finally takes a deep breath and spoke

“hi. i’m neville longbottom, and i—”

“neville?” florean’s eyes grow wide, “neville longbottom?”

“yes,” neville says, surprised that anyone knew his name

florean comes out from behind the counter and puts his hands on neville’s shoulders with tears in his eyes

“neville, i’m your grandfather,” his face breaks out into a grin that neville’s mirrors and by golly if anyone were to walk into the store they’d notice immediately that this man and this young boy have the same smile

and he continues, “i have thought of you every single day for years. i remember you as a baby, but you grew older and i don’t think your grandmother approved of my chosen career, so she distanced us, but i have never stopped thinking of you. i knew that one day we would meet again.”

neville is at a loss for words

“my daughter was alice, and i still visit her regularly, but it pains me how little you know of her”

florean ushers neville over to a table and sits him down, abandoning the ice cream flavors and beginning to tell neville all the stories he never had a chance to

neville listens intently, his smile never leaving his face, and his heart feeling that his parents are closer to him than ever before

reminder that a boggart is not your very worst fear, but a representation or reminder of it... for example harry’s worst fear is not dementors but the sense of despair and fear that they bring. ron’s worst fear is well known to be spiders, but anyone who has looked at his character below surface level knows full well that ron fears being unworthy, and i think the spiders represent this as something people mock him for; which makes him feel even more inadequate. hermione’s worst fear is not failing a test, but failure itself. she is incredibly ambitious, and is afraid to not meet her own personal expectations. her fear of also disappointing someone she respects (professor mcgonagall) is very similar to neville’s boggart, which is representative of him not living up to his parents legacy. this is shown by a strange twist of his grandmother and professor snape, because they are both authority figures who have constantly looked down on him. snape was not neville’s worst fear but a crushing reminder of the idea that he would never be good enough

Harry: Next time you pull on a stunt like that, don't expect me to coming running to rescue your sorry arse.
