Alex Thomas at The New Republic:
Bernie Sanders seemed genuinely impressed by the size of his Los Angeles rally this weekend. “Unbelievable!” he declared upon reaching the microphone, “there are people half a mile away!” Moments later, he claimed 36,000 people were gathered before him, which constituted “the largest rally that we have ever had.” If I were forced to paint with a broad brush—and at 36,000 people, a broad brush would be the instrument of choice—I’d say the crowd was a coalition of aging hippies and entertainment industry millennials. It was a massive crowd, to be sure, but nobody in the throngs surprised me by their presence. I did manage to find one woman who voted for Donald Trump in 2016 before voting for Biden in 2020. Prior to the rally, she confessed to me, “I’m so thankful [Bernie] is doing this kind of thing.”
This was a message I heard repeatedly from attendees: Those gathered were hoping for hope itself. Maybe even a determination to hope. Noah, a 28-year-old software engineer, told me while waiting in line, “I’m hoping for some answers about how to stay encouraged … I’m hoping this is a positive day and adds some clarity to the situation.” Moments later, his friend Amir chimed in, “Hope has to be cultivated, kind of. And so I think this is, I don’t know—maybe therapy?” There were plenty of therapeutic aspects to the rally, like Joan Baez crooning “Imagine” or Neil Young, Maggie Rogers and Baez singing “Keep on Rocking in the Free World.” But, despite Sanders’s promise that “We’re going to make our revolution with joy. We’re going to sing and dance our way to victory,” it was hard to characterize the crowd as hopeful, much less joyful. Nevertheless, there was a determination among these 36,000 people. A 32-year-old screenwriter named Brett told me: “The only way I know how to go on is to hope and believe—and certainly it won’t happen if we don’t come here and try to work together and listen to each other.”
And there was that other kind of determination as well—the determination to unite a left wing in the place of an official institutional party organ that feels incapable of much at the moment. This was not the hardened Bernie crowd of 2016. I saw far more Harris-Walz shirts than Bernie 2020 shirts. That determination to hope has seemingly expanded the tent. With that in mind, there’s a precarious challenge that Sanders—and, more importantly, his younger proteges who will carry this movement into the post-Trump era—are going to have to face. They have to unite a defeated half of the political spectrum and turn all of these determined sparks of hope into a structured movement. Congressman Maxwell Frost, who spoke before Sanders, told me, “When something big happens in the country and people feel like something’s wrong, they’ll pick one of two things—sometimes it drives them further into apathy, sometimes it drives them into action. Organizers stand at that crossroad and we help give people a political home. That’s what’s going on. We see this billionaire takeover of our country and now as organizers, we have to stand at that crossroad and try to get people into something. Because there’s also a lot of people in this moment who will fall more into apathy and our job is to make sure that doesn’t happen.” Naturally, this crowd was far from apathetic; indifference isn’t a strong enough force to get the average person to stand in the Los Angeles sun all day. Here, the heat was punishing: Sanders had to stop his speech several times to call medics into the crowd, as did several of the other speakers. At one point the nurses’ union rushed off the stage to help. And their assistance was limited to the people they could see: If there really were 36,000 people at this thing, only about 10,000 of them were visible from the stage; the rest were on the other side of a treebank and the press riser. That crowd stood in a dirt lot watching a jumbotron. Beyond them, the streets were filled with people too, just standing. The mood became more vague as you worked your way through the outer reaches; in the further orbit, there was less of that sense of passion and determination. Still, even at the margins there was a consensus among the furthest-flung that this was, for reasons they couldn’t articulate, the place to be. Here on the periphery you’d encounter a hollowed-out dumpster with a younger group perched on the rim, just sitting, watching the event unfold on the big screen. Again, 36,000 people—from the dumpster sitters to the gleeful crowd in the front bouncing a beach ball—is a hard number to do much but generalize. But this crowd showed up for something, and you could hear that among them. On stage, you could see that something taking shape. During her oration, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez connected local action—last week, an LA school superintendent turned away DHS officers attempting to enter his school—to the billionaire takeover of the government. “This moment did not come out of nowhere,” she said, “the destruction of our rights and democracy is directly tied to the growing and extreme wealth inequality that has been growing for years in America.”
[...] On stage, there was a clear passing of the torch and a message taking shape. Sanders’s argument was broad, he bashed “a corrupt campaign finance system” and Elon Musk generally. Both of those were ripe objects of criticism, but Ocasio-Cortez had a more finely tuned message. Like Sanders, she criticized the Democratic Party. While he criticized them for listening to “their billionaires,” she attacked specific practices like congressional stock trading and corporate lobbying, both of which are unpopular. Sanders attacked Trump’s billionaire coterie, but AOC proposed a longer game, telling the crowd, “If we are here to defeat [Trump], we must defeat the system that created him.”
Bernie and AOC’s Fighting Oligarchy Tour has brought out a new movement to fight the Trump/Musk Oligarchy every step.

So Tumblr,
I found out that I hit 400 followers? I umm I’m am going to be real with you I don’t know why I have that many.
Maybe I’m really good at acting like I have everything together and I’m not a mess of a student with a ton of late work and focus problems. Someone give me an Oscar.
But thanks for 400, this blog really is one of the main reasons I have the motivation to study. I don’t really know how to celebrate this but feel free to send asks and messages? I’d love to connect more with the people that follow me here.
But anyways, I’m currently reviewing linked lists because you think a senior computer science student would know basic data structures but um, she does not. It’s kinda bad how ill prepared I am to be a software engineer but I mean better late than never. Last night I headed to a nearby chocolate shop with a friend because they were having discount but the chocolate my friend chose was nothing short of terrible. Oh well at least it was an excuse to get away from the library.

The Cultural Phenomenon that is The Matrix (1999)
Like the last essay I posted here, this is an early draft of what might become something more substantial. It has nods to other WIPs including a cultural phenomonon essay on Harry Potter, and there are other works I have my eye on like Stuart Semple's Pinkest Pink, AI weiwei's Ouvre, the CHARLIE HEBDO terror attacks, and Hamilton which I think are central to the political culture of the 21st century. Feedback is encouraged and if you want to send me works of art that you think are part of a broader cultural phenomenon I'd love to hear them.
At least in American political culture, few works have been as influential over the last 3 decades as The Matrix by Lilly and Lana Wachowski. In brief, software engineer Thomas Anderson discovers rumors on the internet of something called The Matrix. Federal Agents appear at his workplace and capture and interrogate him about what he knows. He is recruited by a team of rebels that reveal that the whole world he believes he understands is an advanced computer simulation which imprisons all of humanity. He is offered a choice, take a blue pill that will erase his memory of the rebels and allow him to return to his job and life beneath the attention of the “agents,” advanced programs that look like federal agents but in fact work for the robots imprisoning humanity, or take a red pill that will remove him from the matrix entirely to experience the real world. Anderson chooses the red pill and is believed by the rebels to be “Neo,” a hero prophesized to end the imprisoning of humanity in the matrix. In an operation gone wrong because of a betrayal from the inside, rebel leader Morpheus is trapped in the Matrix. Anderson and the rebels reenter the matrix, Confront Agent Smith, rescue Morpheus, and Anderson becomes Neo gaining superhuman abilities in the matrix.
This movie fits into a tradition of pulp sci-fi in which ragtag heroes overthrow an oppressive force, but where it gains its political currency is primarily through its identification of the world itself as the oppressive structure. Specifically, there is an illusionary world created for the sole purpose of oppressing humanity, but its illusions are in fact extremely charming. Cypher, the traitor who assists the agents in capturing Morpheus, wants to return to the Matrix and is disgusted with the real world behind the illusion. He is portrayed as materialistic compared to the idealistic rest of the crew, creating pornographic simulations for himself to enjoy inside the matrix, and being uninterested in their philosophical ideas about freedom. Cypher and Agent Smith’s defeats represent the triumph of Neo and the rebels ideas over the oppressive structure. Nothing about this immediately captures the political energy this movie would generate. It was followed by two less successful sequels with more bombastic cinematic set-pieces, but which have not apparently stuck in public consciousness like the original.
Philosophically, it recreates nearly identically Plato’s allegory of the Cave, from Republic. In brief, Plato writes that Socrates proposes a cave in which people are chained from birth and shown shadows on a cave wall. They have no reason to believe, until they leave the cave, that there is a world apart, and grow to understand deep subtleties in the world of the cave. When you remove someone from this cave, they are weakened by their lack of knowledge and the brightness of the real sun outside, and if they were to ever return to the cave, they would find that the subtleties they enjoyed and appreciated about the life of the cave would be overwhelmed by the force of outside reality, and they would come into conflict with cave dwellers about the nature of reality because the experiences they had outside the cave would be incomprehensible to those inside. The Matrix agrees with Plato’s argument that only those “Outside the Cave” or free from the Matrix are capable of self-government, and consequently of holding power in society, because those in the cave don’t understand reality as wider than or separate from their understanding of the shadows on the cave wall.
For a certain set, this idea is politically intoxicating, because of what it says about the relationship between them and others. If you can come to believe that you understand one deep truth that others do not, you are seeing “reality” while others are only in “the matrix.” You therefore deserve political power over those who do not understand because of your understanding of “reality.” Among certain people in the tech industry this idea proposed that their understanding of and capacity to create the computer systems underneath modern banking, logistics, identity, social media, and information technology meant that they understood everything they needed to understand to deserve to rule the world.
The conspiratorial nature of the events of the movie also reinforce the insular nature of knowledge about the matrix. It is a thing ordinary people don’t know about, and you can expect people to be dismissive or even hostile when you attempt to share knowledge of the matrix with them. For misogynists looking to recruit socially awkward people online, the framework of the Matrix and its “red pill” gave a perfect frame into which to fit a conspiracy theory about the power women have over men. What only the men who have “taken the red pill” believe is that women are basically subhuman and are primarily motivated by sex with dominant men. Therefore, men looking to have sex with women must, instead of attempting to engage with them as human beings, either abuse and manipulate them into complete emotional reliance on them as “responsible” men or accept that they will never get what they think they want because of an inability to become sufficiently manly. These are “incels” in their own and others’ language about them.
While these groups are small, they have had an outsized impact on American political culture. The particularities of what they believe and the writings of their thought leaders are far less important than recognizing their tactics, which primarily include grooming impressionable self-described social outcasts into abandoning their wider social circles in favor of these radical communities. It’s here that the ideology of the Matrix actually becomes the basis for what these people do politically: members are groomed to believe that they are special because of their disconnect from others and that their disconnect from others must be nurtured so they can come to see the truth. Just like the Matrix, believers are set apart from “normies,” those out of the know, who might be concerned about the apparent disconnect between what they are hearing from the nascent radical and their experiences. Rejection from “normies” is an affirmation of the truth of the ideology. If that sounds like a cult, you are understanding the psychological tools at play. However, unlike most cults, the specific combination of desire for political power and access to silicon valley money has meant that the influence of these people goes far beyond the mere fandom of this sci-fi movie or people in small boards on reddit.
When you look at a modern political cult that has recruited thousands and carried out real attacks on US democracy like Qanon, you should recognize that the thought leaders of Qanon are the thought leaders of these message boards, and that Donald Trump’s political career is in many ways directly owed to people who organized these early internet social spaces.
That said, I want to also mark a profound irony to the Matrix: It is at its core, also a movie about transgender experiences. In the initial cut of the movie, one of the rebels was going to be played by two actors, a man in the real world and a woman in the matrix. The red pills were modeled on the real estrogen pills taken by the directors to trans their genders. At the core of the Matrix’s plot is Neo’s rejection of the identity that he is given by the world of the Matrix, the persona of Thomas Anderson, and embracing a new identity, community, and name.
The movie is by two trans women about their experiences of being trans women and the isolation and disillusion with society that causes. Yet, by making a movie about disillusion and isolation, they also created a vocabulary to discuss disillusion that people who had been radicalized into hating women, democracy, and diversity to isolate people and dismantle whatever guards those isolated people had against radical hatred of women, democracy, and diversity. Nobody can blame the Wachowski sisters for what the world did with their movie. When I discuss Harry Potter, I think the opposite holds true: the cultural phenomenon attached to Harry Potter is as disconnected from authorial intent as the cultural phenomenon attached to The Matrix. JK Rowling’s cultural phenomenon extends far past the impact of her books because her actions were so directly political while her books were so distinctly inoffensive and anodine. Moreover, Rowling herself is undoubtedly a victim of the cultural movement precipitated by the Matrix to radicalize people against the trans people who made it.
I want to be careful not to overstate the cultural importance of this movie. Like each of the works that I want to discuss, it changed language and influenced a subculture that produced several violent political movements, but the people who used it had their own agendas for change and it’s reasonable to think that if they hadn’t latched on to this story they might have found another one. I don’t think its fair to conclude from the history that it conclusively created anything that wouldn’t have existed without it beyond fanworks or derivative media, and that its role in politics is limited to political communication. However, communicating political ideas determines what ideas get spread. The Matrix provided a primer in the ideas of Plato’s Cave: of another world that we are kept from that could radically change our understanding, and the idea that everything you know about the world might be a lie. For any radical that is an openness you require in people who you want to recruit. It also marks the very boundaries of acceptable political communication as the basis of political struggle. Before the Matrix, politicians could be thought to win on policies, while the goalposts of political life were more or less static. Afterwards, people started to provoke the political establishment with questions about the playing field itself. Once you accept that we could be living in the matrix, you ask what exists outside of the ideological boundaries you learn in schools. To a trans person, the notion of Male and Female become suspect. To Donald Trump’s inner circle, the same questions are provoked about Democracy and the Rule of Law as we know them.

Unbox a new phone in the US and it's almost certain to have Google as the default way to search the web. Federal judge Amit Mehta on Monday ruled in favor of the US Department of Justice that the contracts Google uses to secure that position violate fair competition laws. Now Mehta must decide what to do about it.
The jurist could order big changes to the unboxing experience, with users having to select their default search provider. He also could go as far as to force Google to sell parts of its business. Mehta scheduled a hearing for September to begin the process of deciding the penalties, but with Google appealing the verdict, it could be years—if ever—before the search giant must comply.
Though legal and economics experts say it’s difficult to guess where Mehta might land with his remedies, they have some ideas of what he might be considering. Here’s a look at five options.
Ban Revenue Sharing
US courts have generally tried to resolve antitrust violations by ordering an end to the illegal behavior, setting rules to prevent it from recurring, and taking any additional measures needed to ensure that the culprit and its competitors are moved onto an even field.
To satisfy that first prong, Mehta is widely expected to ban Google from continuing with arrangements under which it splits tens of billions of dollars in ad revenue among Apple, Samsung, Mozilla, and other companies that agree to set Google as the default search on their devices or software.
“At a minimum, the Justice Department will ask for an injunction that forbids Google from engaging in the conduct that the court deemed to be improper,” says William Kovacic, who previously served as an antitrust regulator on the US Federal Trade Commission.
An injunction might prevent Google from using its unmatched economic might to outspend smaller search companies, such as Bing, DuckDuckGo, or Ecosia, to secure exclusive default status. Positioning matters; Mehta’s ruling found that even when it’s easy for users to switch defaults, most people don’t adjust the setting. But some do prefer Google. That’s why “Google.com” is the most popular search term on Bing, which is the default on some Microsoft devices, according to Mehta’s ruling.
In the future, users who prefer Google may end up having to query “Google.com” in other search engines, too.
Require Choice Screens
Mehta could follow the lead of the European Union, which for years has required Google to offer a menu of search options on Android devices, and recently expanded the rule to the Chrome browser.
Experts don’t believe the European regulation has led to a significant increase in the popularity of Google alternatives because users recognize Google better than other options. “The horse is already out of the barn,” says Herbert Hovenkamp, an antitrust scholar at Penn Law School who has researched tech platforms. “One problem with free choice is that it won’t necessarily take down Google’s market share.”
But if Mehta pursues the approach, he should make some improvements on the EU’s rules, says Kamyl Bazbaz, senior vice president of public affairs at DuckDuckGo. Users should be prompted with the choice screen periodically, not just once, Bazbaz says. They shouldn’t have to deal with popups from Google urging them to switch the default to Google, he adds. And when users first interact with a competing search app, there should be an easy way to set it as the default app.
With these added measures, some searchers could find themselves more reliably ditching Google. Others could be frustrated by the recurring requests.
Order a Divestiture
Contract bans and choice screens are examples of conduct remedies. But the Justice Department in recent years has expressed a preference for what are known as structural remedies, or breaking off parts of a company.
Most famous is the breakup of telephone giant Bell in the 1980s, creating a variety of independent companies, including AT&T. But courts aren’t always on board. When Microsoft lost an antitrust battle in the 1990s, a federal appeals panel rejected an order to break up the company, and Microsoft eventually settled on a range of conduct changes.
A one-time sale is preferred by regulators in part because it doesn’t require them to invest in monitoring the ongoing compliance of companies in terms of conduct remedies. It’s a much cleaner break, and some antitrust experts contend that structural remedies are more effective.
The challenge is figuring out what parts of a company need to be separated. John Kwoka, an economics professor at Northeastern University who recently served as an adviser to FTC chair Lina Khan, says the key is identifying businesses in which ownership by Google are “distorting its incentives.” He says that, for instance, breaking off search could open the door to Google’s Android partnering with a different search engine.
But Hovenkamp doubts the potential of a search sell-off to increase competition because the service would remain popular. “Selling Google Search would just transfer the dominance to another firm,” he says. “I don't know what sort of breakup would work.”
Some financial analysts who study Google parent Alphabet are also skeptical. “Alphabet's scale, continued strong execution, and financial strength mitigate this legal risk and the possible ensuing financial and business model ramifications,” Emile El Nems, vice president for Moody's Ratings, said in a press statement.
Other legal experts envision a future in which search results would come from Google and the ads in the experience from another company that’s spun off from Google. It’s unclear how that remedy would affect users, but it’s possible ads could end up being less relevant and more intrusive.
Force Google to Share
Mehta found in his judgment that Google provides users a superior experience because it receives billions of more queries than any other search engine, and that data fuels improvements to the algorithms that decide which results to show for a particular query.
Rebecca Haw Allensworth, a law professor at Vanderbilt University following the Google case, says one of the most aggressive remedies would be requiring Google to share data or algorithms with its search competition so they too could improve. “Courts do not like to force sharing between rivals like that, but on the other hand, the judge seemed very concerned about how Google’s conduct has deprived its rivals of what they really need to compete—scale in search data,” she says. “Forcing data sharing would directly address that concern.”
Potential shareable data could include all the queries that users are running on Google and which results they are clicking, DuckDuckGo’s Bazbaz says.
Another option would have Google hold on to its data while instead providing a service on a nondiscriminatory basis, with adequate customer support, for other apps to pull results from Google and present them to users as part of a competing experience. Rivals have called Google’s existing offering in this regard inadequate.
“Only a multipronged remedy will allow rivals to enter the market and fairly compete for consumers based on the merits of their own product,” says Lee Hepner, senior counsel at the American Economic Liberties Project, an anti-monopoly advocacy group.
Any approach that involves Google sharing data is likely to raise questions about its users’ privacy. Strengthened rivals also would have a better shot at securing defaults, meaning those who’d rather use Google would again have to take a few more steps to get back to regular old Google.
Increase Oversight
It’s up to the Justice Department to propose to Mehta potential remedies, which Google would then get a chance to rebut. Neither side has previewed what it wants.
In some other antitrust battles, Google has found ways to design product and policy changes to continue to limit competition in part by making competing unaffordable for rivals. “Google will do anything it can to get in the way of progress,” Bazbaz says. That’s why he hopes Mehta establishes a monitoring body to administer the remedies and hold Google to their spirit.
Bazbaz also wants to see Google have to invest in public education initiatives to let users know about the benefits they can get from switching search engines. With oversight and PR measures in place, users may have no choice but to hear about the Google Search antitrust case for a long time to come.

what's it like studying CS?? im pretty confused if i should choose CS as my major xx
hi there!
first, two "misconceptions" or maybe somewhat surprising things that I think are worth mentioning:
there really isn't that much "math" in the calculus/arithmetic sense*. I mostly remember doing lots of proofs. don't let not being a math wiz stop you from majoring in CS if you like CS
you can get by with surprisingly little programming - yeah you'll have programming assignments, but a degree program will teach you the theory and concepts for the most part (this is where universities will differ on the scale of theory vs. practice, but you'll always get a mix of both and it's important to learn both!)
*: there are some sub-fields where you actually do a Lot of math - machine learning and graphics programming will have you doing a lot of linear algebra, and I'm sure that there are plenty more that I don't remember at the moment. the point is that 1) if you're a bit afraid of math that's fine, you can still thrive in a CS degree but 2) if you love math or are willing to be brave there are a lot of cool things you can do!
I think the best way to get a good sense of what a major is like is to check out a sample degree plan from a university you're considering! here are some of the basic kinds of classes you'd be taking:
basic programming courses: you'll knock these out in your first year - once you know how to code and you have an in-depth understanding of the concepts, you now have a mental framework for the rest of your degree. and also once you learn one programming language, it's pretty easy to pick up another one, and you'll probably work in a handful of different languages throughout your degree.
discrete math/math for computer science courses: more courses that you'll take early on - this is mostly logic and learning to write proofs, and towards the end it just kind of becomes a bunch of semi-related math concepts that are useful in computing & problem solving. oh also I had to take a stats for CS course & a linear algebra course. oh and also calculus but that was mostly a university core requirement thing, I literally never really used it in my CS classes lol
data structures & algorithms: these are the big boys. stacks, queues, linked lists, trees, graphs, sorting algorithms, more complicated algorithms… if you're interviewing for a programming job, they will ask you data structures & algorithms questions. also this is where you learn to write smart, efficient code and solve problems. also this is where you learn which problems are proven to be unsolvable (or at least unsolvable in a reasonable amount of time) so you don't waste your time lol
courses on specific topics: operating systems, Linux/UNIX, circuits, databases, compilers, software engineering/design patterns, automata theory… some of these will be required, and then you'll get to pick some depending on what your interests are! I took cybersecurity-related courses but there really are so many different options!
In general I think CS is a really cool major that you can do a lot with. I realize this was pretty vague, so if you have any more questions feel free to send them my way! also I'm happy to talk more about specific classes/topics or if you just want an answer to "wtf is automata theory" lol
#asks#computer science#thank you for the ask!!! I love talking abt CS and this made me remember which courses I took lol#also side note I went to college at a public college in the US - things could be wildly different elsewhere idk#but these are the basics so I can't imagine other programs varying too widely??

have you any thoughts on soft body robots
Awesome username and yes absoloutely.
They break down into two major types:
Hollow, and membrane which form a kind of spectrum.
From hollow-types we begin with cloth-likes. This is your BMW Ginas, and your space-frames and monocoques (I love that word, it feels so good in the mouth to say).
Maestro, please:
youtube
Absurdly light, lithe, software defined, able to change shape in wild ways like some absurdist high fashion statement of skin and effect. Delicate like a bird. An olympic athlete without a wasted ounce of fat. A coathanger robot. Spartan. A puppet of cloth, metal and intention, like a scarecrow or a kite.
It would be brutal were it not potentially so fragile, for the impact forces are imparted entirely into the body's frame beneath which must deform to endure any crash or crumble the world speaks to those shapes. It is the butterfly, and the humming-bird of this branch of engineering. If you need a lifting body and you can some how distribute the fluttering forces across the surface with shape memory alloy stiffness in the cloth you have a self-definable prehensile wing. You have created the answer to almost every aerodynamic concern imaginable, forever.
And so, we go even further beyond in this metaphor.
We go to the true thoughts of softness now.
We find the ounce of fat we did not before. We find the blubber. The charm. The plush padding of privilage of our touch, of function and personality. The trembling doughy forms of gellatine flooding, filling those synthetic cloth or plastic or flexible metallic hulls.
The functional practicality here is simply beyond measure, and likely won't be understood in our lifetimes while we chase hardened hulls. Soft robots are dreamily suited to working with humans for we ourselves are largely soft robots of protein self-assembly systems, clumsily physics-enfolding some interpretation of our genetics through the pachinko machine of probability, space and time.
Looking upon the true soft robotics, we see thusly, a spectrum: gas and baloon like and perhaps even buoyant to float like a fairy -- to sloshing fluid to dense sticky gellatine, we find all the places of impact we need.
Bulbous, enduring, reflective of forces. A thing able to deal with the world and simply bounce, care free. Perhaps to tear, and spill, but always to knit and in bleeding become so much more than a body.
The factors of the structure deforming in ways no exoskeletal form is able to do so give dexterity simply unimaginable.
If the filling itself is prehensile perhaps like some bizzare synthetic echo of forms like those seen in molluscs, we run into a machine which isn't using tiny magnetic tubes to turn but an enormous mass which is structural and acting as a container perhaps for fuels in micro-pockets to prevent unwanted combustions or the spread of flames.
That is to say, the blubber energy dense like our own, powerful, like the non-beach-muscle bodies of non-magazines who achieve real work like mothers, brothers and beer-bellies and forms of joy of all in between.
This form is is fire-proof. It is shock resistant to a level no fragile ceramic metallic machine can really imagine.
And it is still lighter, than that metallic machine which by comparison now, is crystal, practically glass by comparison.
What else would you like to know?
I'm good for another round if you are.

Although we all have rights, should these rights be more closely regulated? Especially when dealing with online threats and doxing.
We all have rights and one of them is free speech. Of course free speech is important. It allows us to protest, speak our opinions, etc. However, the internet can be tricky when it comes to this. Many people can hide behind their screens and post what they like. People can post harmful and offensive things but it’s deemed okay because it’s their first amendment right. In chapter 5, Gender, White Supremacy, and the internet, Daniel’s shares an example of how free speech online can go too far and without legal repercussions. Daniel’s shares how a white mother, Bonnie Jouhari, was a social worker and also helped people file housing-discrimination complaints in Pennsylvania. Her work upset a white supremacist. On a white supremacist website people started posting pictures of her workplace edited to be on fire. Unfortunately when she tried to talk to the police they explained that they couldn’t do anything because it was the publisher’s first amendment right to free speech.
With white men being the primary people involved with white supremacy, why don’t we hear more about white women being a part of white supremacy?
White supremacy is white male dominated. It is male dominated online and offline. In the print era white men were the primary publishers. However, women have played significant roles in the white supremacy movement. Daniel writes, “Some estimates suggest that white women may be the fastest-growing part of face-to-face organized racism, with some suggesting that women make up as much as 50 percent of new members”. White men have always been the faces and voices of the white supremacy movement while women have supported and gotten more vocal with their beliefs as the white supremacy movement moved from print-era to digital-era.
With technology advancing and using computer generated virtual personas, how can this be misleading for the female gender expectations online and offline?
When creating these AI or computerized characters or virtual personas it can cause confusion amongst men and women for gender expectations. Creating these “female friendly” personas can leave people expecting women to act and behave the same online and in person. They create these stereotypical attractive female characters as a link to the real world but that is actually the opposite. Many Of The virtual personae that have emerged on the market to date are simulations of young, attractive females. These personae are clearly being constructed through a heteronormative paradigm. This Gendering of the interface as young (white) Females invokes a familial relationship of fathering”. It is also believed that since men dominate the software engineering and programming that they are creating these female fantasy figures. They are creating female characters the way they expect and want real females to look.
Do we create gendered structured online communication without meaning to?
There are so many social media applications and websites that end up being separated by gender. On tik tok there are a lot of self care videos that are structured to be for women. “Girls night in” and it’s a video of a girl by herself taking a bath and eating chocolate or it’s a video of 2 girls doing their makeup and drinking wine. Daniels writes how there is even a ladies-only discussion board at Stormfront.org which is a white supremacy website. I think we can create gendered structured online communities with and without meaning to. Some men create discussion boards that only allow men and they discuss things only men can relate to. However, people might go on a genderless application like Instagram and find themselves following women-centered pages. “Online communication in mixed-gender settings generally tends to disadvantage women, and it is often the case that women and girls in mixed-gender online groups create a space of their own”(69). Devblog 1
Hi! My name is Wendy, I'm a software developer, and the creator of Dear Darling Games. I'm going to be using Tumblr as a more relaxed and unpolished blog. For now, because I don't know how to format a blog post professionally quite yet. Later, I'll want a break from the structure of it, and have many things I feel I can chat about.
About me! I'm currently twenty two years old, and my goal is to be a solo game developer with a heavy focus on visual novel RPGs. I have no experience, and I'll be logging and citing my entire process as I learn to the best of my ability. Even figuring out the right questions to ask has been quite the task.
Tonight, I'm starting at square one. I'm using an IdeaPad laptop, and operate on a night-shift schedule due to work and life circumstances. This means most updates will be around four in the morning for me. I'm head of household in many ways, so sometimes I will have to step away for a day or two to get my affairs in order.
Here's all I'm learning, planning to learn as of now, and what I have so far.
Planning to learn: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Godot Engine, Procreate, and Blender. 2D paper-doll animation, rigging, video editing, layering, how to use Alpha lock... Sound design - cello, violin, piano, flute, foley techniques, and general sound equipment. Navigate and create - a website, a put together GitHub profile, and my first game pair; a 2D Mouse themed VN RPG, and a 2D farming game inspired by Zombie Farm with significant changes to the storyline, main mechanics, and characters. In essence, a reworked fan remake, and it will be free to play. I will also be learning how to navigate matters of intellectual property, copyrighting, and more in that area. Finally, I'll be learning Bootstrap, Sass, and React and Redux to create Single Page Applications.
Learning now?: HTML, CSS, Godot Engine, Procreate. Foley techniques, and I've officially gotten down plucking scales on my cello. No luck with the bow yet... I'm refreshing my guitar skills, and saving for a keyboard. I'm utilizing RPG Maker to start familiarizing myself with very, very basic aspects of how to communicate with the computer. Plus, it gives fast results which help lulls in attention span for learning how to do it all myself. I am not planning on publishing a game with RPG maker for *professional* purposes to illustrate learning or ability, but it is very fun to use.
What I've got: Full storyline and pathway branching for decisions, voice bits and character voices [done by me], snacks, water, and a dedicated workspace. Character sketches on paper, most of the dialogue, a working title for both, and most of the battle and other systems planned. It feels like all that's left to do is code and Learn How to Draw Digitally, but that's sure a lot when you have to break it down into all the little steps and refocus those into groups and whatnot. I also have a GitHub profile and joined their Developer Program, I have this tumblr, a Jira account to break down tasks and to-dos in a more manageable way, and my Neocities website has officially been set up to the point of Having It.
I'll release a pinned post with my production announcements later.

“(enter coder name)’s skins aren’t (complaint)”
jcink runs on a system called invision power board.
jcink’s version is a modified structure of IPB 1.3 from the early 00s.
invision currently offers 4.x.
jcink notoriously refuses to update its interface, and they could. computer engineers and IT specialists in this community (people you definitely know) have volunteered (for free) to assist with updating jcink’s interface.
often.
a complete conversion of jcink 1.3 to the latest version of the software, including updates of every new version, would cost approx. USD 75-100,000. this is an estimate if the founder and their IT team weren’t involved.
the license to the software (per server) is $499.
why does this matter?
IPB 4 comes with an app available on android/apple.
next time, you’re complaining about “mobile responsiveness” remember that your fight isn’t with coders. instead, why are you paying $10 to someone, who to quote himself is “not afraid to learn something new and stay up to date,” but won’t update the fucking interface?

When you begin the planning of a construction project, you are faced with the inevitable question: how much will it cost? The answer to that can be found in a Bill of Quantities, or BoQ in short. Today, we will talk about how to prepare a bill of quantities, in 6 easy steps.
A Bill of Quantities (BoQ) lists the total materials required to complete the architect's design for a construction project, such as a house or other structure. BoQs are typically prepared by a quantity surveyor or civil engineer who has expertise at estimating the materials required for a project.
The bill of quantity enables you to get quotes for the project that are as accurate as possible. Even if you don't prepare the BoQ yourself, it's still worth knowing how a bill of quantity should be prepared, so you can evaluate the quality of the finished product.
The following are the steps you can follow to properly set up a bill of quantity.
Set up the spreadsheet
Open a new file in your favourite spreadsheet program, online or offline. (We recommend using LibreOffice, one of the best free office software ever.) Now set up the column as follows:
Item numbers
Description
Unit of measurement
Quantity
Rate for the item
Labor cost
Total cost
As expected, your item numbers should start from 1, and reiterate as you change through the categories or sections of the build. The data for the rates and labor costs should be filled in by respective contractors, or, as per the quotes you got from them.

Tata Motors’ Stock Surge: Brokerage Strategies to Navigate CV Boom and PV Challenges
Tata Motors Ltd shares surged in intraday trading on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, as brokerages unveiled bullish reviews of the carmaker’s ambitious strategies for its commercial and passenger vehicle divisions, spotlighted during its recent analyst meeting. With targets like a 20% passenger vehicle market share by FY29, the stock has sparked excitement among investors looking to capitalize on intraday trading opportunities.
Stock Market Strategy - Buy, sell, or hold shares of Tata Motors?
Brokerage: Motilal Oswal
Rating: Neutral Target Price: Rs 690 Downside: -4%
Despite ambitious targets to boost CV and PV market share and margins, execution faces challenges from weak demand and rising costs, with the brokerage holding estimates steady.
Brokerage: Nuvama Institutional Equities
Rating: Reduce Target Price: Rs 670 Downside: -6.7%
Nuvama predicts JLR sales will slow due to weak US and China demand, while India's CV division faces muted growth from high transporter utilization, railway competition, and a high base, with rising marketing costs driving a modest 3% EBITDA CAGR over FY25–27E.
Brokerage: Emkay Global
Rating: Buy Target Price: Rs 800 Upside: 11.2%
Tata Motors' CV business thrives with strong profitability and a potential demand recovery, but the PV segment faces muted growth due to weak industry demand and lackluster response to recent launches, with brokerage estimates unchanged.
Background-
Tata Motors targets scaling up its double-digit EBITDA for the CV business into teens by FY26 and is aiming at a 10 percent EBITDA for the PV and EV business by FY30, an investor presentation said on June 9.
The CV business will be 'stepping up the pace now', said Tata Motors, setting its sights on 40% market share by 2027, with teen EBITDA margin. Commercial vehicles at Tata Motors could see a proactive investment in decarbonisation and connectivity solutions, along with software-defined vehicles (SDVs).
The management reaffirmed that its EV business achieved EBITDA breakeven in FY25 in a mark of improved profitability, which it said will continue going forward. The car maker is now targeting its EV business to have a penetration of 20% by FY27 and over 30% by FY30 with continued improvement in margins.
The EV side of the business is well-funded for the next three years, added Tata Motors, and said it is aiming at leading the transition towards software-defined vehicles (SDV) in India. Tata Motors added that it plans to 'converge' its cost structure for EVs with ICE engines and deliver positive EBITDA.
On car sales, the management sees muted demand growth going forward, with the shift to SUVs continuing, amid a highly competitive environment. Tata Motors added that the uncertainty surrounding the global trade environment may continue to induce additional volatility in the business. Tata Motors stated that it aims to achieve double-digit EBITDA margins and positive free cash flow in the passenger vehicle segment going forward.
At 10 am, shares of the auto giant were quoting Rs 727.50 each, 1.38% high against the previous close of 717.80
