So... is this canon? The "Lanes carved from bedrock" theory
There is this fic by @out-there-tmblr called Brush Off All The Dirt about a the backstory of Silco and Vander meeting as young men in the mines.
There's also the big fat Zaun timeline/chronology meta by @sorceressofthesky
They basically propose the following sequence of events of what exactly might have been the backstory of Silco and Vander and the Lanes as Young Men: namely that they built the Lanes up from scratch.
Let's look at the hints.
1.) Silco, Vander and Cassandra Kiraman are roughly the same age range.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2.) The voice on the recording we assume to be Cassandra. Technically we don't know that for sure I think? 2x01 definitely starts with Cassandra talking because she is talking directly to Caityln
"I know you doubt the merit of your birthright, Caitlyn. There's wisdom in that. But remember: You're a Kiramman."
The voice on the recording picks up directly there with
"But remember: You're a Kiramman."
However it is distorted, in theory this could be ie Cassandra's mother talking to Cassandra and just using the same phrasing. That said, my subtitle thing notes Cassandra for that line.
"The rise of industry in the fissures has led to the air becoming increasingly toxic. They call it the Grey. I've instructed our architects to devise a ventilation system."
So Cassandra as a young woman installed the ventilation system. In the picture where the ventilation system is being opened, she is posing with miners who wear gas masks.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3.) When we see the flashbacks of Vander, neither he, nor Silco, not Connel and Felicia wear gas masks, which suggests the conditions were better for them than during the time when Cassandra was posing. So either Vander and Silco became miners after the changes Cassandra made or were around to see it happen. [note another theory, that shows up in the fanfic, is that those people next to Cassandra might be Piltover engineers who get better gear than the normal miners, following the idea that Pilties need masks and Zaunites are just used to the air, but it still never sat right with me that Felicia would raise her children without protection if there were alternatives; I also think the miner gear just looks pretty similar from the drawing to the flashback]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4.) When Felicai talks to Silco and Vander she says "Tonight a harebrained scheme these two bozos cooked up to turn a dank crack in the earth into a thriving, healthy community became a reality." and later "You two are gonna figure this Zaun thing out. I don't care if you have to carve it out of the bedrock, covered in blisters. You're not allowed to fail anymore."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(that line alone is interesting. Does "you are not allowed to fail anymore" imply they have failed before? there's also the line from Silco to Vander "we both know topside won't listen to anything else.")
5.) In season 1 Vander is protective of the Lanes specifically ("Spare the Lanes"). While Silco wants freedom for all of the undercity.
6.) It gives Vander and Silco something to do between Felicia announcing her pregnancy and the bridge fight. Felicia's words suggest that they have already achieved a lot, the Last Drop is already fully there and looking good. And yet it's several years between Vi being a zygote and Vi being a young kid in the opening scene (I would expect her to be at least 5/6). Time for Vi to have a relative safe happy idyllic childhood as per the Remember Me video. And Silco throwing a molotov and looking scared overall seems like a still fairly innocent reaction, suggesting that there wasn't that much all out open war before the Bridge fight (again matching the rosy, peaceful depiction in the Remember Me video). If Silco and Vander were mostly busy building up their community that would explain why Vi had a very happy childhood rather than being born into turmoil or being raised in the middle of a civil war.
So the solution that for example that fanfic proposes is:
there was an area that was unusable due to Gray
after the ventilation system was installed it tentatively became livable
Vander, Silco, Felicia and Connel started to use their mining knowledge to carve out new areas that new people could live in and built a thriving community
that community's economy was heavily based around on smuggling (as per the statements of Amanda, who also says Vander and Silco created the "market" respectively market area).
Tumblr media
it would explain why Felicia is still working as a miner when her kids are small rather than let's say working for Vander at the bar. They are not working for rich mine owners, they are doing their own thing and working for something they believe in.
It seems like it was always a vision of the writers that Vander and Silco "built the Lanes" in whatever form. And season 2 could have brought in the additional backstory of Cassandra making it possible thought her air systems and Felicia being one of the miners who helped.
Now personally, I strongly think that "it does not matter what headcanon the writers have, if they didn't put it on screen it does not count" (ie like Amanda saying Viktor bullshitted his way into the academy or that he helped Sky get a spot there). But it's still interesting to ponder what exactly the writers were envisioning.
Personally, i always like the idea more of Silco and Vander as dashing robbers in their youth, more in the style of "this is exactly the sort of job Vander would've pulled when he was our age."
But I'm willing to wrap my head around alternative takes. I think there is some appeal to the idea that there was something that Vander and Silco built up as young men, something that was their baby and Vander stayed attached to it. That they "built the Lanes" together. And they clashed, because Silco wanted to expand beyond that ("You had my respect. The Lanes' respect, but that… that was never enough for you.").
That said, I'm not super enthralled by it and I'm trying to formulate why. For one it seems kind of less dashing than fun robbers and revolutionaries. Again there's some appeal of actually building something. But "let's build an underground town" ...
1.) it just seems kind of small as a dream compared to
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
2.) it seems kind of close to what Ekko is doing (don't like how things are being run, build your own community, except with less pretty trees and hoverboards).
3.) It feels kind of like a very American sort of dream? Grab a piece of wild land, tame it, built a thriving merchant town on it.
Again, I don't completely hate it (and I really enjoy that fanfic that goes into the weeds of Silco and Vander figuring out the starting logistics). But overall, I'm glad they left it vague enough so I'm free to imagine it more as Silco and Vander organizing heroic miner strikes for better working conditions or being gangsters who work their way up.

Dorm Match-Up
@imjustabeanie
The nature of your soul is...
🐚Octavinelle🐚
Tumblr media
However, due to your thalassophobia, you will be sorted to another dorm, one whose color is close to that of your soul. But that's for later. First, I will explain why you got into Octavinelle.
🐚 You embody the spirit of benevolence that Octavinelle stands for. You listen to others about their problems and help them solve it. But just like the great sea witch, you keep your lips shut when it comes to your own problems.
🐚You also have enough smarts to not get scammed by Azul or any of the other Octavinelle students to do their work. You keep receipts and screenshots of everything, which is great leverage in the chaotic. In short, you'll survive. Maybe even become dormleader, once Azul graduates.
🐚You also have an ocean aesthetic, which might not seem like much, but sometimes the Mirror just sorts them by their vibes. That's why most of those in the same dorm have similar aesthetics and values and whatnot.
🐚A plus of being in Octavinelle is that your dream of having a big friend group is very much possible. Octavinelle students are known for their many connections, and I'm pretty sure you'll fit right in.
🐚However, due to your fear of the ocean, and the fact that the Octavinelle dorm is literally underwater, you are transferred to...
Tumblr media
💀Ignihyde💀
💀Ignihyde students embody the spirit of diligence, that of the king of the underworld.
💀 Ignihyde students are PASSIONATE about their projects, whether that be writing, video games, engineering, or art. They work tirelessly to make their vision come to life.
💀 Ignihyde students are PERFECTIONISTS, going above and beyond to make sure their work is great in every aspect, both design and execution. Because of this, Ignihyde students have a tendency to DISTRUST others in group projects, thinking only they have the ability to perfectly bring their vision to life.
💀Ignihyde students are INNOVATIVE, often blending together tradition and modern styles and techniques. You are also very innovative and creative, which is one of your greatest skills/talents.
💀You dislike it when you're FREEDOM IS RESTRICTED or when others force you to do stuff against your will. This is a common feeling most Ignihyde students have, especially since they believe they could do better stuff with their time, including stuff they are passionate about and/or believed are more beneficial.
💀This dorm may not fit your soul perfectly, however it was the one that most closely aligned with your soul, other than Octavinelle of course.
💀You are definitely one of the more extroverted students in Ignihyde. It may seem quite hard at first, being in a dorm filled with introverted of self-absorbed students, but you'll eventually win them over, perhaps through your great gacha luck. Making friends in Ignihyde may seem difficult, but letting them rant about your interests is a solid method. And once they do let you in to their cold dead hearts, you'll probably see your Ignihyde friend coming up to you to ask whether you can pull for them in a limited banner, very different from the scared and stuttering mess they were when you first met.
💀One of the pros of being in Ignihyde is you could wear whatever you want in the dorms, including pajamas, and you wouldn't even feel like the odd one out since most everyone there does that too. Ignihyde students are too absorbed in their tasks and personal projects to have the time and energy to judge. Because of that as well, no one in Ignihyde would take advantage of you or be forceful or bully you.
💀Being bullied by students from the other dorm is also very unlikely, due to Ortho's protectiveness and willingness to explode anyone who bothers his brother and their dormmates. Idia usually steps in before Ortho could do any major bodily harm, but the threat of disintegration is enough to scare away even the most courageous of NRC students.
💀Your fellow Ignihyde students are quite fine with your dubious experimental ideas, as long as (1) you don't question theirs and (2) they aren't your test subjects (do it on another dorm, like Savanaclaw or something).
💀Ignihyde dorm is mostly empty (aka no crowds), since most of the students here just hole up in their own rooms, where they eat, sleep, and study. There is one exception however, and that is the science lab room, where scientific instruments and welding gear are found. It is the most crowded room in Ignihyde, probably because that is where most students who cannot afford their own gear go to bring their ideas to life. They even do reservations, especially in the busy season (cultural festival science presentation). If you want to avoid the crowds, Ignihyde is the perfect place, as long you avoid that specific room.
💀 However, there are a lot of cons to living in Ignihyde as well. The dormleader is kind of annoying, but he luckily doesn't bother you (or anyone else) much. The dorm's kitchen is mostly composed of instant noodles, junk food, and pitchers of instant coffee, and no one bothers to stock up on ingredients, so delicious dinners are very rare. And also, the lack of people can make everything feel so boring, which you don't like.
💀if you ever get bored, you can go to other dorms or the school's courtyard and socialize/bond with other people there. And when it becomes too much again, you could return to the safety and quietness of ur dorm.
I hoped you enjoyed the dorm sorting!!

Hell Biker - Day 68
Race: Fiend
Alignment: Neutral
June 10th, 2024
Tumblr media
AWWW SHIT, HERE WE GO! PUMP YOUR ENGINES, LET THOSE EXHAUST PIPES SHOOT, AND ROCK AND ROLL FOR THE ONE, THE ONLY, THE BEST MOTORCYCLIST THE VORTEX WORLD HAS TO OFFER- HELL BIKERRRRR!!!!!
Ahem. The last of the non-biblical fiends in the series stands out to many, whether it be for his Hulk Hogan voice, strange origin, or just how odd he is even compared to his fellow fiends. Sure, Matador is a bullfighter, and Daisoujou is a mummified monk, but the strange mix of Ghost Rider, Biker Gangs, and cheesiness has captivated many, me included. Unfortunately, in Tony4U's video on the Fiends, he had to brush over Hell Biker for a... variety of reasons, but let's just say that the Angel of Hell has a lot of things, uh, riding on his portrayal.
Starting off, and this is very explicit, but Hell Biker is directly based on the long-running motorcycle club called the Hell's Angels, the largest biker gang in the world. For the most part, these clubs consist of people who stand for freedom and ride outside of the 'laws of society-' things like romanticized ideals that many may see in, say, the Yakuza, being people who aren't afraid to step out of line of the law to do what they see as right, or, in the case of the club, to express true freedom.
Hell Bikers' name in Japanese is, quite literally, ヘルズエンジェル, translating to Hells Angel, which makes the reference even more explicit beyond the resemblance of, not only the leather trench coat, but also the Motorcycle it uses. The design of the motorcycle seems to be based primarily off of classic 1980-90's Harley-Davidson cycles, as pictured below.
Tumblr media
I really like the detail on the motorcycle that Hell Biker uses, however, that his bike's top is pink, with the sticker being a heart with a lightning bolt struck through it- it adds a far more playful twinge to the design, showing that it isn't just the bike of a hard-ass gangster. I like to think that the heart and pink coloring are just his way of showing appreciation to his mother- there is a common stereotype in several movies and TV shows regarding biker gang members, after all, being that a lot of them are mama's boys.
Back to the Hells Angels, the club formed in the United States in 1948 as a joint collaboration between several smaller gangs- namely, a breakaway from the Pissed Off Bastards Biker Gang named Otto Friedli who left due to a dispute joined up with several people from other gangs, each of which joined together to form the syndicate we know today. Since then, it ballooned into a worldwide gang with members all across the globe. Notably, the Hell's Angels aren't an explicitly criminal organization like most organized crime groups- despite having an organized structure, every charter in the group is their own person who does their own thing. As such, while it is arguable that the leaders of the gang are complacent in some horrible things, such as human trafficking, many people in the gang simply wanted a sense of community, and actively refuse to participate in criminal business.
Now, drifting back to Hell Biker, the series seems to portray him as one of those bikers in the gang that uses it as an excuse to get away with criminal activity and violent lashing out, driven by hatred towards both himself and the world at large. As the compendium almost always states regarding the fiend,
[Hell Biker']s anger with himself and the world causes him to lash out, that everyone else would suffer as well.
Yeesh. I think he needs therapy, not a biker gang. Design-wise, Hell Biker takes a lot of cues, interestingly enough, from a completely different flaming skeletal biker- the golden-age Marvel hero, Ghost Rider! Who hopefully needs no introduction. Of course, given the idea behind the demon being a biker, the fact that he's a Fiend, and how badass flames generally look when being driven on Motorcycles, it's hard not to explain the similarity. Overall, though, Hell Biker is a very interesting Demon, and he stands out alongside Matador as one of the fiends who breaks many rules left unspoken within the series. Much like Alice! Funny that.
please don't kill me hells angels people im harmless i swear

Summary: A spider finds out about himself that he never really knew about, and he's glad he did
Archive of our own version: Here
Spider felt alien.
Well, more than he already is, considering to the Na'vi, humans are the most unnatural beings. Which he doesn't argue with. He has seen firsthand how their emotions and beliefs are primarily powered by greed, selfishness, and an ugly fixation on absolute control over everything they see and can't.
Spider always hated the stories the others would tell; how the sky people, Tawtute, came from the stars within their metal birds (space shuttle), wanting to find a new home away from their neglected planet. Believing they could rebuild to save their species from extinction. Not once worry how their actions would affect Eywa'eveng's motherlands, creatures, and her children. Killing thousands without remorse, brothers, sisters, families, and many good humans that weren't blinded by their stupidity. Like Grace Augustine, Jake Sully, and the many scientists that saw their freedom within Pandora.
Knowing this, Spider understood why the Omatikaya treated him as an outcast.
Despite owning a Na'vi spirit, he was confined in his weak human body. He still remembers how, as a toddler, he'd constantly have extreme temper tantrums, his face entirely red with crocodile tears streaming down his cheeks. Demanding fussily that he wanted to own an Avatar like the others. He even begged to use someone else's when they were not using them. Prompting Poor Norm to explain to a grumpy four-year-old boy how borrowing a genetically engineered Na'vi-hybrid body was impossible and dangerous to his undeveloped mind. And creating his own was the same without the suitable instruments and technology to keep it alive.
So, with a saddened heart, he'd accepted that he couldn't be a true child of the people. Yet, it didn't stop him to tried to be one as much as he possibly could be as a human. He stopped wearing human clothes unless he was asleep or with his foster family, spoke the people's language to train himself fluently and read all of Ms. Augustine's survival guides and old video logs. To further his knowledge his their traditions, customs, animals, and flora. Spider did everything to feel even a tiny bit like them, and no matter the little praises and comments he'd received, he treasured them. Those small praises gave him confidence and a sense of being him, not a demon, not his son.
Not Miles Socorro, son of Colonel Miles Quaritch, a Na'vi killer's child. He's Spider, a son of Eywa, a friend and warrior of the Omatikaya clan. He continued this throughout his childhood, leading toward his teens. Where his self-esteem was at his lowest, and puberty was a total bitch. However, throughout the years, he gained friends from a family like him, sharing two worlds. However, unlike him, the people treated them with respect. Lo'ak and Kiri, son and daughter of the mighty Toruk Makto, are his foundation.
Lo'ak, his frivolous brother, brought him trouble and madness wherever they went, a dynamic duo that loved to prank everyone and have amazing adventures that left them with bruises and cuts, much to Mo'at and Neytiri's displeasure. Regardless of his recklessness, Lo'ak can be a great listener, surprising even Spider. He's considerate of the issues that Spider faces. Being similar to his own due to his eyebrows and extra forefinger. They both rely on each other, having their back against anything in their path.
Then there's Kiri, a blessing of the great mother, his kindhearted sister. She always finds ways to cheer Spider from the nasties of moods, showing him Pandora's most extraordinary sites. They bond over their parentages and differences and have each other's back from those who call them freaks.
Yet, this wasn't the reason why he felt alienated.
The combined efforts of Kiri's stubbornness and Lo'ak's lack of decency were the critical key points that helped him discover that feeling. It was high noon, the sun was at its apex, and the Omatikaya carried on their daily chores. He and Kiri were tasked with gathering fresh herbs and fruits to replenish Mo'at's medicine room to aid in creating new ointments and creams for the young warriors injured from hunts and recon missions. Thanks to his fast knowledge of the different effects of the various types of plants, along with Kiri's Tsakarem training, the two are collecting the materials in recorded time. They were enjoying each other company until Spider heard a yowling scream before a vast body pressed him down, "Hey, Bro!!"
Spider smiled, immediately recognizing the voice anywhere," Lo'ak get off bro, your heavy." Lo'ak laughs, still pressing down the older boy, lightly teasing him about how tiny he is under him until Kiri decides it is enough, pushing her annoying brother off him. Spider never mined the teasing from him, knowing fully well that these comments were a way of having fun. Not to be used by the other kids and adults behind their backs.
"Lo'ak."
Spider lifts his head to see a very irritated Neteyam glaring down at his younger brother with his bow on his hip. "Dad told us to hunt for Yerik to bring back to Mother. Stop messing around." He rolled his eyes at his older brother. Spider stood up, dusting himself off the dirt and grass that covered his loincloth, listing to the two arguing. Spider always found it amusing that both claimed to be soo different than the other when he could distinctly see their similarities. Understandably, Neteyam is the responsible child and follows the rules with an iron fist, yet he still vaults into trouble alongside Lo'ak without a second thought. Completely ignoring the dangers and consequences that come from it. And despite Lo'ak being a devil-may-care teenager, he's very concerned about his family and defends them without question, like any brother.
If only Spider could make them see that.
"Whatever, I'm bringing Spider with me for the hunt since somebody doesn't want me around," Lo'ak proclaimed, wrapping an arm around Spider's shoulder. Kiri looks at her brother with a frown, walking up to the two with a deep frown," No, he's helping me gather herbs to bring back to grandmother. He can deal with hunting later." She explained, crossing her arms. Her response was a defending groan, "Oh, come on, sis! I don't want to go with Captain Serious. He'd just gonna go off flirting with that warrior chick again."
That was new; Kiri and Spider looked at Neteyam with shocked yet interested expressions at the newfound information given to them. Neteyam's ears became a dark violet as his face became one of embarrassment. Glaring daggers at his brother, he counters back how "it wasn't like that!" and "She's just a fellow warrior." causing his siblings to giggle at his attempts, while Spider remained silent.
Lo'ak then adds to his brother's horror of the considerable benefits of having a mate, along with some imagined comments causing Neteyam to blush further, causing him to tackle his brother to the ground. Kiri rolled her eyes at the two, "Boys. All of them are just the same." Kiri declared; she then quickly looked back to Spider," Excapt you, Monkey Boy, your so lucky that you don't have to worry about all that stuff." Spider simply chuckles, agreeing with her statement.
Spider understood that being Pandora's only human child, he'll never have a mate to call his own. Unfortunately, he'll never-Wait, is he despondent that he can't have a partner?
He blinks at the sudden thought, confused by the fact that he isn't sad about not having a mate. If anything, he's…glade. Spider, throughout his life, never really talked about romance. Even when someone brings it up in conversations, he just nods until the topic changes to matters he's passionate about, such as hunting, gathering, and even playing with the other kids. It was he experiences little or no romantic attraction to anyone.
Wait a minute, didn't Norm explain something related to that topic a while-Wait!
Spider suddenly remembers one of his Earth lessons instructed by Norm and Max when the topic of "Sexual identities." came into the picture. Norm explains that the people of Earth use them to tell how one thinks of oneself and to whom one is romantically or sexually attracted. It also refers to one's sexual orientation identity, which is when people identify or disidentify with a sexual orientation or choose not to identify with a sexual orientation. In all honesty, Spider was extremely confused about all the terms and meanings since the Na'vi didn't really have or use titles to express their fondness. However, thinking back, he'd recall a particular word buried back of his mind that seemed to stick called Aromantic. Aromantic is a term for a person who experiences little or no romantic attraction to anyone.
This seemed right with him, and if anything, it felt… natural. Like anything that he ever felt unsure of was utterly gone. He's Aromantic. "Spider! Come on, bro, it's almost eclipse!" Spider snapped out of his mind, seeing Lo'ak with Kiri and Neteyam waiting on the other side of a towering tree leading to a dirt path. Spider fastly runs up to the two, apologizing for spacing out. They all began to walk back to the village before Jake had to call a war party for them. Lo'ak, noticing his brother's silent gaze, asked, "You okay, Spider? You seemed quiet."
Spider took a moment before he replied," Oh, you know, Just thinking. And finding some things out."
Spider going to have a field day when he tells Norm and Max what he discovered today.

Karlach for the character ask !!!
Ahh Karlach my beloved!!
How I feel about this character: Karlach is maybe one of my favorite characters in any video game of all time. All the BG3 companions have an impressive range that gives them depth, and I feel like Karlach is the peak of them. One minute she's making you laugh, the next she's making you angry, and then after that making you cry. I also love how she isn't afraid to disagree with the player and can have very strong emotional responses towards them. She's very open about what she's feeling, like when it's revealed Durge worked with Gortash and she's clearly angry, betrayed, and needs space. A favorite moment of mine is after Gortash's death and her heartbreaking (and frankly scary) outburst, she casually drops "love you" before leaving. I love her SO MUCH <3
All the people I ship romantically with this character: While I generally don't ship anyone with her (due to enjoying the more tragic avenue of her story if she's alone), I love the flirty moments she has with Dammon, they feel very organic and wholesome.
My non-romantic OTP for this character: Her bromance with Wyll is so so fun, I love seeing them in the background as like a single unit and the moments at last light inn when their stories overlap (like talking to Florrick or Mattis) make my heart sing. I love both characters separately, but together they feel like they're greater than the sum of their parts.
In addition, I find her relationship with Astarion to be really interesting, and while it doesn't evoke as strong feelings as her relationship with Wyll, I really like how it seems like they have little in common on the surface, when you get down to it they share a lot of similar traumas, and even how they react to them.
My unpopular opinion about this character: I actually really like that there's no "true" happy ending where you can fix her engine, and further my favorite ending for her is the one where she dies in the end </3 Her story is so potent in its tragedy, and after having tried all three, the two where she lives (either in hell, her worst nightmare, or as a mindflayer, which debatably isn't her anymore) feel like they defang her very powerful story. For me, an important aspect of her character is the fact that everything that could've been done was done, every promising road turned into a dead end, and it isn't fair that something like this is happening to her. She feels to bright and too special to just die, but there's no other option, and that's okay. What mattered is that she was here, and she was alive, and she spent every moment up until her last in freedom from the Hells and true to herself.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: Maybe not directly about Karlach, but I wish the details of the deal between Gortash and Zariel was explained further. I understand that Karlach doesn't know about all the details and frankly doesn't care, but it feels odd that there is no way for the player to find anymore information about it and thus we just don't know. What did Zariel have that Gortash wanted so badly? We understand what Zariel got from the deal (kinda, bc it's also a little confusing as to why she wanted Karlach at all), but I wish what Gortash got in exchange was explored further, especially in the ways it could have potentially affected Karlach's view of her self-worth.
GIVE ME A CHARACTER: and I’ll break their ass down:

A behind-the-scenes look at CAPSULE's VR concert "CAPSULE Live in VRChat 'Metro Pulse'" (Sound & Recording Magazine, 23.08.17)
On August 5th, 2023, electro duo CAPSULE held their concert for the album Metro Pulse. The location was a metaverse space known as VRChat. An audience of around 1,200 people gathered, many from overseas, in spite of the high technological requirements for entry. People shared their excitement for the event via social networking websites (SNS), but as artists have increasingly returned to in-person concerts following the coronavirus pandemic, how did Nakata Yasutaka, the brains behind CAPSULE, decide to go with a virtual performance instead? We'll take a look at the story behind the production with Nakata and the show's director, computer graphics artist ReeeznD.
Translation by ystk-archive ・ 3,712 words ・ Original interview ・ Concert
【Start of VR live project】 The virtualization that stemmed from VR meetings
I'm going to start off with some basic information about VRChat. Also known as "VR SNS," VRChat is a platform where users create avatars and communicate with one another. Areas in VRChat called "worlds" serve various purposes that range from conversation hubs, to places where one can enjoy beautiful virtual scenery, to hosting fashion shows or, in this case, live concert events. Putting it simply, VRChat is being improved by the day through social input, and its cutting-edge atmosphere is part of its allure.
─ When did the plan for this VR concert start?
Nakata: The music videos for our latest album Metro Pulse already featured virtual worlds, but the MV creator Saisho Kentarou-san suggested that if we could use a videogame engine, it'd be possible to move around those worlds in real-time. The music videos had to be done using Cinema 4D, but I kept thinking about getting more usage out of my virtual avatar. So it didn't start with the idea of doing a concert in VR, but rather it came about from wanting to make stuff that could go into a CAPSULE music video.
─ In addition to the VR concert hall area, you also created a space called the "CAPSULE HOUSE" for users to explore.
Nakata: It's a building that looks exactly as it did in the "Virtual Freedom" music video. I designed it alongside the director [Saisho] with a "resort studio" concept, and I proposed that we use it as a sort of lobby area for the concert hall since we already had the data.
─ At what point did you earnestly begin working on this VR concert?
ReeeznD: I was asked to work on it sometime in March this year. Since the most important thing was to make sure the concert would be a success, I started by considering how much could be put into it, all while being conscientious of how much time I had until the concert date. Because of that, I suggested a realistic duration of four songs/fifteen minutes, but even with it being that short it was still worked on up to the last second (laughs).
─ What sorts of back-and-forth conversations did you two have?
Nakata: Those took place in VR without us realizing we were in VR.
─ What do you mean?
Nakata: Everyone wore headsets and entered the VR space to work on it, just like if it was a venue in real life. We had discussions like "it'd be better if the height was like that" and "the view from the audience seating should be more like this" and whatnot. Instead of everyone discussing while having one screen to look at, each of us could move around in the 3D environment and gesture towards things. It was pretty different from how we made the music videos.
─ So you held your meetings as avatars in the VR world.
Nakata: Yep, that's right. It was an interesting hands-on experience, but it's difficult to explain how fun VR is to people who haven't tried it. I think it's hard to convey the coolness of it to people reading this article and looking at the screenshots on a flatscreen monitor, so I hope they'll get ahold of a headset and jump in, no matter what it takes (laughs).
─ Lots of users on SNS who had never been in VR before were posting about their excitement for the show. The experience has an impact that's indescribable.
Nakata: That's true. I think it's important for a VR concert to be seen in VR in order to be fully experienced, just like live shows in real life. If you don't see it in person, you can't appreciate it properly. And it's amazing that VR concerts have gotten to the point where they can give attendees the same sort of feeling they'd get at concerts in the real world.
─ Being there as it's happening is now the same experience whether it's VR or in real life.
Nakata: It is different from just watching something on a screen by yourself; users can chit-chat together before the concert starts. In the early stages of development when ReeeznD-san and I were going over what they'd made so far, I altered the sound accordingly. You could say the audio initially sounded sort of dry, like it was left as-is the way it sounds on the CD release, but I wanted the audience to get the sense that there was more space for the music to permeate. VR differs from in-person concerts in that it's up to the user how they experience the music, but we still consulted about sound effects, like "how would it sound if someone moved over here?" and "we should alter it depending on how wide or small that part of the soundstage is." So from there ReeeznD-san would show me his progress and I'd add sound effects as I saw fit.
ReeeznD: Here's an example for you: during "Give me a ride," Nakata-san added an explosion sound when the logo appears.
─ So not only does Nakata-san handle the music for the performance itself, he also does sound effects. That's very like him, considering how much he loves film.
Nakata: That logo scene was originally supposed to happen at a key moment (laughs). But since it shows up after the song ends, I could put in a sound effect without messing up the music.
ReeeznD: Sound effects were supervised by Kinu-san. He works on his own VR concert projects, doing everything from sound to stage direction, and if the sound effects aren't good enough he'll add them in himself. But other artists' music is untouchable in a sense, people on the production side can't do whatever they want to it without getting permission. The two of us talked about how sound effects were going to be difficult to pull off for this particular show, so we added the logo and explosion visual when there was a lull in the action. I was really impressed when Nakata-san put his own sound effect in that part because we didn't ask him to — Kinu-san was excited too (laughs).
─ That's some valuable insight into what it's like for people working on a creative team together.
Nakata: Also while we're talking about it, I added a 40-50Hz, rumbling sort of low sound effect between each song. Just for the sake of giving it some ambience. I don't even know how many users could hear it, but I think if you wear headphones it's audible. I'd like for people to listen to the show using their best possible audio set-up.
【Building VR sounds】 Sounds that can "only be heard in that spot" while accounting for attenuation and venue dimensions
Although you could watch this concert with only a PC, it's infinitely more enjoyable to connect via VR headset and get immersed in the environment. Compared to VR's first year on the market (in 2016; so nostalgic...), with offerings like the Meta (Oculus) Quest 2 and HTC Vive et cetera, the technology is now widely available: Apple just announced their Vision Pro, and the Meta Quest 3 goes on sale this year. The only major disappointment is that VRChat is currently only available on Windows, with no Mac support. Regarding audio, you can listen via the headset's internal mic or, as Nakata suggested, connect your preferred DA converter and use your headphones.
─ How did you tackle the issue of sound quality?
ReeeznD: In VRChat, worlds are created using an engine called Unity, and many creators leave the audio up to Unity as well. However, since this was a concert, we wanted to retain as much quality as possible. What's challenging about doing a concert is the amount of people in the audience can cause the frame rate to lag, which slows down the visuals of the show, so because of that we were searching for a way to maintain sound quality without weighing down the processing. We compressed the audio while checking the quality and processing load in Unity.
─ You set it up with speakers on the left and right sides of the stage.
Nakata: We sourced it via stereo, but ReeeznD-san adjusted the sound within the world to give it a stereophonic, 3D effect. I added ambience to the stereo source, and ReeeznD-san set up attenuation processing on his side of things.
─ Of course the way head tracking works causes the left and right sides where the sound comes in to change, but height and distance also impact how things are heard. How did you go about managing that?
Nakata: Because the space itself is interactive by nature, users aren't, for example, looking at pre-rendered visuals, but are seeing things moving in real time. The music side of things also involves real-time positional processing. When we first did a VR soundcheck, it sounded like the music was coming from a tape deck that was left onstage. I wanted it to feel encompassing, so ReeeznD-san focused more intently on sound sources, and from there adjustments were made to things like from how many meters away sound is heard and so on.
─ In regards to a sense of distance, was there a particular tool you used to tweak the sound?
ReeeznD: Using VRC Spatial Audio Source, I was able to simulate the music in a 3D environment and make it stereophonic. The attenuation is essentially a graph that simulates the actual real sound, but for our purposes I rewrote the whole thing to create a live listening environment that's pleasant on the ears. However, only using stereophonic sound would cause the audio quality to drop, so I mixed in an unnoticeable amount of non-3D sound to balance it out.
Nakata: The concert audio is different depending on where you're listening to it from. I wanted to get that aspect of it right. There may be people who want to hear it the exact same way from no matter where they're standing in the venue, but I want it to be a listening experience you can only have in VR.
ReeeznD: Initially the floor of the concert hall was completely level instead of being an amphitheater. Partway through development, Nakata-san suggested changing it, and this altered the acoustics as well. Since my background is in music video production, I was thinking at first that people would be happy with a final stereo mix like you hear in a video, but Nakata-san was very considerate of the fact that this was a VR concert and made suggestions to capitalize on that, so we kept coming up with ways to match his expectations.
Nakata: There a lot of things you could call VR, like fixed images that have a 360° camera but won't allow the viewer to move around in the environment, or even non-3D objects, but in that sense of the term I think this was the most "VR" live show I've seen so far. Users could have conversations with each other and them moving around would change what they could see and hear. I'd like as many people as possible to know about the world of VR.
【VR and DTM* production environment】 An amazing era where you can do anything with a modern PC *DTM = desktop music, or music that's created using MIDI/computers
With the mention of the game engine Unity, a DTMer reading this may think that VR is a whole separate world from music creation. On the contrary, Nakata sees similarities between the two fields. ReeeznD agrees: "Actually, the difference isn't that great."
─ From the sound production side of things, producing VR content seems extremely challenging. Being able to do both would make one a force to be reckoned with...
Nakata: Basically, people who do music and people who create VR content are not entirely dissimilar. Both can be done in real time without the need for rendering. Just a CPU is enough for today's DAWs, and you can work on projects in real time without having to write things out in advance; there's a lot you can achieve. I think we live in a time where we have an incredible amount of power to take advantage of that. It's huge that someone could do this in their own individual environment.
─ It's a time where anyone with motivation could do anything.
ReeeznD: Yes. The path is open, and there are outlets to showcase it.
Nakata: Of course having skills and good taste are important, but the means to create are widely available now. That's amazing, to me. ReeeznD-san, how did you get to the point where you can create content like this using game engines? From studying Unity, right?
ReeeznD: I worked as a director at a game company for about ten years. Afterwards, I went freelance, doing CG and music video production. I first started using Unity as part of motion capture work with lower-priced consumer goods; I'd bought an HTC Vive for somewhere around seventy- to eighty-thousand yen to do mo-cap with. After that, I started seeing screenshots on SNS from VRChat servers like Ghost Club and thought it looked really fun, so that's how I got into the world of VRChat.
Nakata: It's interesting to me how in VRChat, you have hobbyists' work intermingling with that of professionals. It'd be fun if I could get to the point where I can make my own world.
ReeeznD: I was influenced the most by hobbyist worlds while making this VR concert, rather than pros. There are a massive amount of music worlds in VRChat and I've been to a lot of them. Kinu-san, production team member tanitta-san, and cap.-san, they've all got more experience in VR than I have, and they've made worlds as well as avatars.
Nakata: You see the same sort of thing in music. When you're trying to create something, it's not helpful to take cues from what the people at the top are doing. I think the more interesting creations come from regular people.
─ That seems to be how it goes with new cultures, they spread out from a grassroots origin but eventually become commercialized.
Nakata: I think a whole lot of people would agree with that (laughs). VR as a platform is relatively young, isn't it? I was really lucky to be able to work with ReeeznD-san and Kinu-san along with numerous other people active in the field. If I only concerned myself with music production and nothing else, I don't think I would've done this, but I'm interested in the tech part of it and I think the culture around VR and the user experience are important. VRChat wasn't designed for music performances in the first place. If we'd just thrown the songs into a VR concert without any care, we wouldn't have been able to accomplish so many things. I learned — and goofed off — with others throughout the whole process and it was a very meaningful experience. I really want to learn how to make my own world. Even though I know how hard it is to start from zero when learning something like DTM (laughs), it's easy to blindly dive into a new thing.
─ For someone starting out with no knowledge of it, how long would it take to learn Unity well enough to create a VRChat world?
ReeeznD: Assuming it's their first time ever using Unity... I think it's doable in about a month.
─ In that short amount of time?
ReeeznD: Making your own VRChat world is a daunting task, but resources for them are plentiful, so I recommend starting there by changing things to suit your preferences. That way you'll learn the basics, like adding music and placing a video player, and it'll most likely be about a month until you feel ready to publish the world. Once you've done all that, you can gradually make it more original by replacing purchased assets with your own modeled ones.
Nakata: Similarly in DTM there's something called a construction kit that has pre-made loops in it that you can use as a basis when making your own songs.
【Possibilities of VR live】 A future where avatars can switch the presets on a synthesizer in real time
I experienced firsthand through attending this concert that it's a different experience from simply watching something on a screen. Terms such as "virtual" and "immersive" are overused, and it's understandable how someone only familiar with VR in its current early stage of development would write it off or just imagine what it's like before they've seen it. To be entirely honest, I was one of those people. However, Nakata points out the tremendous entertainment potential of VR live shows, which brings to mind certain prejudices myself and others have about the superiority of "real concerts." Maybe a lot of creators who read this interview will come away from it wanting to learn more about this new field immediately.
─ Before, you mentioned that the production during the concert was done in real time. In which specific parts is this noticeable?
ReeeznD: An easy example is during the chorus parts of "Hikari no Disco," you can see streaks of light going every which way, and since the only instruction given was for light to scatter within a certain area, there's an element of randomness. But above all, the true random element is how users can view the performance from any vantage point they like. Even the sound changes depending on where in the 3D environment they're standing. It's difficult to notice because this kind of thing is obvious in real life concerts, but it's only possible here because a computer is undergoing real-time processing to achieve it.
Nakata: It's important not only to create the environment in real time, but to be actively working on behalf of the user's experience too. If I learn a bit more about the sound aspect of it, I think I'll be able to amp up the interactive elements. For this concert I prepared the music ahead of time, but if we could do it in real time I could make it more interactive and it would better convey the advantages of the VR format. If we really wanted to, we should be able to have the avatar up on stage push a preset button on the synth and change the music.
ReeeznD: Actually, there is a world called Fractone where you can play the synthesizer and program a sequencer.
Nakata: But if we try to implement things like that, your workload is gradually gonna increase (laughs). Honestly, out of all my performances, this show was the one that utilized the most of my ideas. When you try to do it in real life, it's difficult to find a venue to begin with, or what you want to do is flat-out physically impossible, or you just can't do it regardless of budget. However, in VR there aren't limitations like these. Rather, you can add aspects that give it a more realistic feel.
ReeeznD: When I talk to people familiar with the VR experience, nowadays they aren't sure if what they're seeing is fiction or reality. Another way you could look at it is Disneyland was made from fiction, but going to Disneyland is a real-life experience. I think that's the kind of sensation happening in VR. It may be a world created with CG, but it's still a place you can experience with your friends that isn't any different from reality.
Nakata: For example, when an online meeting concludes, I just think "it's done." But when I've been in a VR world, I take off my headset and think "I'm heading back." Like I'm going home (laughs). I can really tell the difference. It's as if I left the house for a bit.
─ Between ReeeznD-san and Kinu-san's talents and Nakata-san connecting with them, this turned out to be a great collaboration between fellow creators.
Nakata: Oh, no, not at all, it's more like I was lucky to get mixed up with some VRChat pioneers.
─ How are you planning to make use of VR in your future activities?
Nakata: Places where music is played bring with them a set of experiences, I think. Festivals are definitely like this, but there's a lot of people who just enjoy the process of going to them in itself. So I consider music to be a part of the production of an event like that, and I feel it's best to create things that suit each respective platform. In VR's case — as we were talking about sound effects a little while ago — sound doesn't have to be created under the assumption that it'll only be coming out of two speakers, so it's necessary to create a different mix specifically for a VR environment. It's been a rule-of-thumb to do things like increase the low end for songs meant to be played in clubs, or to make a song slightly louder for karaoke purposes; this is just the VR equivalent of that. It's just like how a film's multi-channel audio is mixed differently from its soundtrack. Since I mastered a stereo file this time, I want to try parallel processing for the next one.
─ With Nakata-san having cut the ribbon, if other artists get involved in the VR concert arena, I get the feeling we'll be able to see a new sort of future.
Nakata: I think so too. Then again, I'm worried about ReeeznD's schedule if everyone starts doing this (laughs).

So I've been thinking about capitalism
So, as some people know, before I became the queer anarchist squid lady that you all know and love, I was, um. A teenage libertarian.
That's. Not great! But in combination with my disabilities it gives me some interesting perspective about the interplay between capitalist systems and disability, that I kind of feel like are worth talking about.
See you under the cut for a discussion about techbro nonsense and how it can be seductive in the right context to disabled people.
Now, as I've said before, libertarianism is sort of like, a funhouse mirror version of socialism. Libertarians believe in equality and in the need for social progress, they just, wrongly, believe that capitalism should be the vehicle to get there, and that the obstacle to getting there is government over-regulation.
The thing that's interesting, and that I think is worth talking about, is how this interplayed with the fact that I'm disabled, and how I viewed disability accommodation.
As some know, I'm unable to drive. My vision is too poor, my attention span is too poor, and, honestly I have serious doubts about my motor skills being up to par either. Nowadays if you asked me I'd tell you the solution would be better public transportation, but when I was younger, I had completely bought into the promise of things like Waymo. The idea of self-driving cars was transfixing to my younger self.
You could argue a part of that is due to American cultural indoctrination about the car as a symbol of agency. It was also because, in my experience, travel by bus is far slower than travel by car. Either way, I was so lost in the American late-stage capitalist soup that I didn't realize the actual solution - trains.
And this, I think, explains why things like Elon Musk's Boring Company are so alluring. Trains have a negative image to the average American, and cars are seen as an emblem of American freedom and agency, like the gun (oh boy that's an entire discussion on its own), and so people get swept up into the narrative of cars-as-public-transit, because they either don't realize public transit would have those benefits too, or they place outsize value on the car itself, be it due to the aforementioned agency, or due to a desire for privacy.
The ultimate realization of this, of course, is Elon Musk admitting that he only pitched the idea of the Hyperloop as a poison pill to kill the California high speed rail project, because he didn't want to share a train with other people.
But there's another example of a pie-in-the-sky hypercapitalist dream technology that I think preys outsize on disabled people. And that's Meta's pitched idea for the metaverse, or any metaverse concept that involves supplanting or augmenting reality.
Of course, there are platforms like Second Life, VRChat, Neos VR, Resonite... Platforms where, either officially or unofficially, you can make an income off of paid assets, like custom avatars. When combined with the fact that these are immersive social platforms, especially when VR gets involved, these platforms suggest that one can use them to replace the 'real world'.
To the disabled, this is a swan song - no longer do you even NEED that self-driving car, you can live an entire remote life. If income from these platforms isn't enough to sustain you, you could get a remote office job, and just use social VR in your downtime, or you could find a way to get passive income, by making something people will have a continuous need for, like music on Spotify that's safe to use in Twitch streams, or video game engine asset packs. There's lots of ways to approach that problem, but it's out-of-scope of this post.
To get back to the point, Meta's pitch for their metaverse is like this concept on overdrive. A world where everyone is wearing an AR headset at all times, and as a result, anyone can remote into any location through a sort of VR telepresence. If your friends are somewhere, and you can't be there, say you're sick, say you're disabled, say you have a baby or a partner to take care of, for any reason, you can just start a group call with them over VR, and you'd 'be there' without being there.
Of course, this leaves a lot of unspoken issues on the table. How would this necessarily work? They would need to make and maintain a digital spatial 'layer' over the real world, that people would access, be it using an AR headset in person, or a VR headset remotely.
They aren't going to set up depth cameras all over the world to capture the environment on an ongoing basis, so would they do this using the cameras on peoples' headsets? What if someone was wearing a headset and doing something private, like reading a note from someone? Then someone in VR could invisibly sneak up behind them and read it. What about countries with strict privacy laws, like Germany?
It's a siren song for the disabled, sold on a dream, but that dream is built on implicit and explicit violations of social norms, and it's turtles privacy violations all the way down.
I don't have anywhere I'm really going with this. I just, wanted to get it all out onto paper, because I've been thinking about how leftists will call technologies like self-driving cars, hyperloop, the metaverse, etc, things like pipe dreams by the rich, or the 'torment nexus' (a future technology originating as a cautionary tale against creating it in a sci-fi novel), but I think that misses the intersectionality of how these technologies can be seductive to people that, if they were feasible, would benefit from them.
The operative part of that sentence being 'if they were feasible', and my point being that they either are not, or are not without massive drawbacks, making them a siren song and ultimately destructive.
But who cares as long as Elon and Zuck are making billions off the back of impossible dreams, right? /s

Illusory Flight: Between Dream and Fantasy
Illusory Flight: Between Dream and Fantasy Flight has been a dream of humankind for thousands of years. From the Greek myths of Icarus, who made wings of wax, to Leonardo da Vinci's sketchbooks, which envisioned flying machines centuries before the invention of modern aircraft. With the advancement of science, flight has become possible and realistic, but the idea of "illusory flight" still lives on, allowing our imagination to soar beyond the limits of gravity and logic.
The Concept of Illusory Flight Illusory flight does not refer to flight using instruments or engines. Rather, it is a type of flight that occurs in imaginary worlds, in dreams, or in non-tangible mental experiences. It can occur in dreams during sleep, in meditation sessions, or even in virtual reality games that make you believe you are soaring above cities, mountains, and oceans.
حجز تكت طيران وهمي
موقع حجز طيران وهمي
حجز طيران وهمي قطر
This flight requires no wings, no airplane, or no pilot's license. All you need to do is close your eyes, put on a virtual reality headset, or read a fantasy novel about a world without gravity, and you can begin your own journey.
Flying in Dreams One of the most common forms of illusory flight is flying in dreams. Many of us have experienced flying over houses, forests, or even clouds. Psychologists explain this phenomenon as an expression of liberation and a desire to break free from constraints. It is a brief moment when the mind forgets physical boundaries and soars freely.
Flight in Literature and Science Fiction Literature has creatively depicted illusory flight in many ways, from the flying carpet in "One Thousand and One Nights" to superheroes like Superman who soars without instruments. Science fiction novels, anime, and video games also depict flight as a symbol of power, control, and freedom from constraints.
In these works, flight is not viewed as a means of transportation, but rather as a symbol of mental or even spiritual advancement or superiority. In some stories, a person can fly simply by using their mental abilities, or after transforming into a superhuman being.
Virtual Flight With technological advancements, a new type of illusory flight has emerged: flying within digital worlds. Through virtual reality (VR), you can now experience takeoff, soaring, and maneuvering, all from the comfort of your own room. This technique is used in games, flight training, and even in psychotherapy to combat the fear of heights.
Symbolic Connotations Flighting has multiple connotations, including:
Freedom: transcending earthly constraints and soaring in boundless space.
Liberation from reality: a temporary escape from life's problems and pressures.
Imagination and creativity: the expression of mental energy that defies logic.
Desire for control: a sense of being able to soar and control directions and destiny.
Why do we need flight? Although humans have invented airplanes and rockets, their need for flight has not disappeared. Perhaps the reason is that we need spaces to retreat to when reality weighs us down. Flight is a safe space where we can exercise freedom and recapture childhood and wonder.
Conclusion Flighting is not just a fantasy; it is a psychological, mental, and spiritual experience that can give a person a true sense of liberation and release. In a world of restrictions, we all need a moment to close our eyes and soar… even if we don't leave the ground.

Bringing Ideas to Life: The Power of Professional 3D Animation Services
In today's visually-driven world, captivating your audience requires more than just words or static images. Businesses, filmmakers, educators, and innovators are increasingly turning to the dynamic and immersive world of 3D animation to tell their stories, showcase their products, and explain complex concepts with unparalleled clarity. Professional 3D animation services have emerged as a cornerstone for effective communication, offering a versatile tool that transcends traditional media.
Explore the premier Architectural 3D Rendering Services provided by ARKTEK3D, a distinguished firm renowned for its expertise in Architectural Rendering. Enhance your projects with our professional studio, delivering unparalleled 3D rendering services.
Tumblr media
What exactly are 3D animation services and why are they so vital? At its core, 3D animation involves creating moving images in a three-dimensional digital space. This process encompasses modeling, rigging, texturing, lighting, and rendering, culminating in lifelike or stylized visuals that can be manipulated and viewed from any angle. From architectural visualizations that allow clients to walk through unbuilt spaces, to product demonstrations that highlight every feature in stunning detail, the applications of expert 3D animation services are virtually limitless.
One of the primary benefits of investing in high-quality 3D animation services is the ability to communicate intricate ideas with remarkable simplicity. Imagine trying to explain the internal workings of a new engine or the complex steps of a surgical procedure through text alone. With 3D animation, these concepts can be visually dissected, demonstrating movement, interactions, and functionality in a way that is easily digestible and memorable. This visual clarity fosters deeper understanding and engagement, whether you're educating potential customers or training your internal team.
Furthermore, professional 3D animation services offer a significant advantage in marketing and branding. In a crowded marketplace, standing out is crucial. A compelling 3D animated commercial or product explainer video can grab attention, convey your brand's unique selling proposition, and leave a lasting impression. Unlike traditional video, 3D animation allows for complete creative control, enabling the creation of scenarios, environments, and characters that might be impossible or prohibitively expensive to film in real life. This freedom allows brands to craft truly unique and memorable visual narratives that resonate deeply with their target audience.
Beyond marketing, 3D animation services play a pivotal role in various industries. In architecture and real estate, it transforms blueprints into immersive virtual tours. In manufacturing, it visualizes prototypes and simulates processes, saving time and resources. For game developers, it breathes life into characters and worlds. Even in legal and medical fields, 3D animation can be used to reconstruct events or illustrate anatomical structures with precision. The versatility and impact of these services continue to grow, making them an indispensable asset for future-focused enterprises.
Choosing the right partner for your 3D animation services is key to unlocking its full potential. Look for a team with a strong portfolio, a clear understanding of your vision, and the technical expertise to bring it to fruition. With the right animated content, you can not only inform and entertain but truly captivate your audience, driving engagement and achieving your strategic objectives in an increasingly competitive digital landscape.

Journal of Cryptographic Engineering Fires Its Founder Over Anti-Genocide Stance Editing Team / May 23, 2025 at 09:20AM/ https://ift.tt/rdQSG4I image/video: false Professor Koc, a global expert in digital cryptography, was removed from his role as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Cryptographic Engineering, published by German-British academic publisher Springer Nature since 2011. Koc was also expelled from the steering committee of the CHES conference, a major international event on cryptographic hardware and embedded systems, which he helped establish. In comments to Turkey’s Anadolu Agency, Koc said the dismissals came after he spoke out against the genocide Israel continues to commit in Gaza. He confirmed the institutions told him they were uncomfortable with his social media posts. “I support Palestinian rights, and I’m proud of it,” Koc said. “No one can change me.” He added that the removals were “unjust and illegal,” stressing that no specific post was cited as the reason. “When I asked if my posts harmed the reputation of the journal or conference, they said no. But they still dismissed me,” he explained. Koc, who worked voluntarily in both positions, said academic freedoms are under serious threat. “Germany, Britain, and the US are cracking down on voices for Palestine,” he said. “This is happening violently.” He warned of long-term consequences. “Silencing academics for their views is like driving toward a wall. It will end badly for global education and research.” The professor is among many academics and professionals facing backlash for standing against the Gaza genocide. He mentioned recent dismissals at the BBC, Harvard, and Columbia University. Koc emphasized that supporting justice for Palestinians is a moral and academic duty. “This is genocide,” he said. “We must not stay silent.”

Breaking Down VFX Earnings: Freelance Flexibility vs Studio Security
Tumblr media
If you’ve been paying attention to the VFX industry lately, you’ve probably noticed something interesting. It’s not just the studios calling the shots anymore. Today, there’s a whole army of freelancers carving out successful careers from their home setups—often earning just as much, if not more, than their studio-bound peers. But how true is that? Are freelancers in VFX really making more money than studio artists?
Let’s break it down without the hype and take a real-world look at where the money’s going in the VFX world.
Why Freelancing Is Booming
A big shift happened during the pandemic. Studios had to adapt quickly, and remote work became the new normal. Suddenly, hiring freelancers wasn’t just an option—it became essential. That change stuck around.
Freelancers can now pick projects from across the globe. From animation sequences in Europe to explainer videos in the U.S., the gig economy has opened doors for artists who want freedom—and many of them are finding that freedom comes with a financial bonus.
What Makes Freelancing So Appealing?
For many VFX professionals, the appeal of freelancing boils down to three things: flexibility, creative control, and better pay potential. When you're freelancing, you set your own hours, choose the clients you work with, and take on projects that align with your style.
And the money? Top freelancers with strong portfolios can earn a lot. Especially those who specialize in high-demand skills like 3D animation, FX simulations, or motion tracking. Some are even earning more than they did in their studio jobs—without commuting or long hours.
The Studio Artist's Side of the Story
That said, working in a studio still has its advantages. Not every freelancer wants to juggle client calls, chase invoices, or market themselves constantly.
Studios offer structure. You get a team, mentorship, steady pay, and the chance to work on major films, shows, and games. For many artists—especially those early in their careers—that kind of environment helps build confidence and skills that are harder to develop alone.
Plus, the reliability of a monthly paycheck is nothing to scoff at. While freelancers may earn more some months, studio artists enjoy consistency and perks like insurance, paid leave, and better hardware.
Who’s Really Making More?
Now, let’s get into the money. Freelancers can absolutely earn more—but it’s not guaranteed. Successful freelance VFX artists usually:
Have a solid client base
Work with international or premium clients
Keep their skills razor-sharp
Understand how to run their own business
On the flip side, freelancers also deal with dry spells, payment delays, and self-employment headaches. If you’re not careful, those risks can outweigh the rewards. Meanwhile, studio artists may earn a bit less, but they benefit from stability and fewer distractions outside their creative role.
So, are freelancers earning more? Some are. But it takes hustle, experience, and a business mindset.
Clients Are Changing How They Hire
It’s not just artists who’ve adapted. Clients have, too. Agencies and production companies are becoming more comfortable working with individuals rather than full-fledged studios.
Why?
Freelancers can often deliver results faster.
Costs are usually lower because there’s no overhead.
There’s more variety in style and approach.
This shift is driving demand for freelance VFX talent, especially for short-term and specialized projects.
Tumblr media
Skills That Make a Real Difference
Whether you’re freelancing or working at a studio, one truth holds: the right skills get you paid. And in today’s fast-moving industry, tools and techniques are changing all the time.
Right now, the hot skills include:
Houdini for complex effects like fire, water, and explosions
Real-time rendering using Unreal Engine
Blender for modeling and animation
Compositing and cleanup in Nuke or After Effects
On top of that, soft skills—like managing feedback, hitting deadlines, and communicating clearly—can set you apart just as much as your technical work.
Mixing Studio and Freelance: The Best of Both Worlds?
Interestingly, some artists are blending both worlds. They may work part-time at a studio and freelance on the side. Or take a studio job for a year, then switch back to freelancing.
This flexible approach lets them keep learning from teams while building personal brands. It’s also a great way to stay adaptable in a changing job market.
Educational options are also evolving. Many artists are choosing skill-based learning over traditional degrees. There’s growing interest in programs that are hands-on, practical, and taught by industry pros. If you're starting out and want to build a career fast, something like an Animation course in Thane can provide the foundation you need without spending years in a classroom.
The Bigger Picture
In the end, there’s no single “better” path. It really comes down to how you like to work. Some artists thrive in the freelance world. Others prefer the team energy of a studio.
But one thing’s for sure: the VFX industry is more open and flexible than ever before. There’s room for everyone—as long as you’re constantly learning and ready to adapt.
And if you’re watching the creative scene grow in places like Thane, it’s clear the demand for skilled artists is only going up. That’s why many are investing in targeted learning like a 2D visualization course in Thane to give themselves an edge—whether they plan to go solo or join a studio team.
