AITA for asking my roommate to get her shit together and put her dirty dishes away??
Okay. This is what I text her today, cuz at the begining of the week, I told her, AGAIN, that leaving dirty dishes out overnight is a big ick I have, as we have a dishwasher. And it was the only big house rule I asked for since day one. But this morning...
"(Name.) I just asked you the other day not to leave dishes in the sink overnight. And yet there was a bunch of dirty dishes in the sink this morning.
And then there was dirty pan on the stove. And the stove dirty with overboiled pasta water. And the pasta wrapper left on the counter. And you had clearly gone into the clean dishwasher but did not unload it and reload it.
I am just frustrated and a bit disappointed. I am not asking you to do even 50% of the housework. I will even take the trash and clean the main floor bathroom if you can get your dirty dishes put away.
I know that ADHD makes it hard and I totally understand bad brain days, when you have bad brain days at least tell me or mention something. Cuz at this point is feels like you're being careless and disrespectful of the shared space and about the only house rule I have, and I have expressed from day one. Dirty dishes go in the dishwasher and do not sit in the sink overnight.
I bought a little whiteboard that I can put up with a bit of a chore chart again, as it would be more visible than the printed chore chart I made initially.
But at this point, I do not trust that to help a lot, though I am willing to try it if you are.
The last time I talked to you about this, you said you'd talk to your therapist about tools and ways to help you remember, but I am still having to remind you about taking the trash out; if I don't, it doesn't get done. Same with the dishes.
I don't want to have to nag to you do these tasks, as you are an adult, but if I do not give you reminders, it just doesn't get done. Or I dk remind you, and it still doesn't.
I don't want to be mean or harsh, but I am just very frustrated by the dishes thing especially. I have said from day one that is all I asked of my roommates to do, and it is something that does not get respected.
And honestly, I am working a lot of hours and am physically tired, and I know you have limitations, but the fact that you are at the house so many more hours a day than me and even the basic tasks can't get taken care of is so exhausting and frustrating.
I don't know what else to do or say.
Unfortunately, I will be at work literally all day today, a d won't be home until 10pm and I will not have the energy to do a face to face talk tonight.
I am willing to have the conversation here, or plan for it on Saturday. Let me know what you want to do."
Like, I know she's AuDHD, and young, but 22 is certainly old enough to be able to put your dirty dishes in the dishwasher yes? She's been living at the house for like 6 months now, which you think would have been long enough to at least start figuring out some systems and tools to help.
Am I being a bitch? Expecting too much? Being too Neuro typical/ableist?
Any advice? Cuz the next step is telling her she's paying $20-$50 more a month in rent to make up for the fact I am cleaning up after her.
#ignore me#*screams into the void*#I have been working 9-10 hour days lately#and actually 11 hour days Monday and Tuesday#8 hours yesterday day but a split so I was at work at 5am had a break at 8 and then back from 11-5pm#today is another like 11 hour day#with me starting at 8am and being done with the second job at 9:30 ish#there may be lingering COVID fatigue#I have my period today#you can see why I am a bit upset and tired#but maybe I am overreacting?#I don't want to lose the roommate cuz I need one for financial reasons#so I don't want to upset her or drive her away#but FUCK I BARELY ASK FOR ANY HELP AROUND THE HOUSE

Hi , (Leah , apartment, "You set the kitchen on fire?!Just a little, but it means we can start the remodelling sooner, right?)
part of the milaverse remodel II l.williamson
you didn't think much of it when you were stuck at the red light and a fire engine came flying past, cars all screaming to a halt to let them through, humming along to the radio.
you'd just come from a full day of media commitments, starting at 5am with a morning radio interview and ending around 5pm with a photo shoot you were almost certain would require some serious photoshop for the bags under your eyes.
so 12 hours later, utterly exhausted and almost home, you couldn't wait to just curl up with your wife and your daughter. with nothing to do tomorrow at all you'd promised mila a family day you'd cautiously left to leah to plan, hinting heavily if it involved a sleep in and breakfast in bed you'd make it worth your wifes while.
however, every single thought was emptied from your head and replaced with the screaming of alarm bells as you turned the corner onto your street and saw the fire engine again, only this time parked right out the front of your home.
you cleared the gap in record time grateful there didn't seem to be another car on the road and you barely threw it into park before you leapt out, leaving the engine going and the keys in as you pushed your way past neighbours and onlookers without a word.
you heard a few of them call out your name but it fell on deaf ears, shrugging away the hands that poked at you until you were at the front, a tiny amount of relief flooding you as you spotted the back of your wifes head.
leah almost hit the ground as your body hurtled into hers, scowl set and mouth ready to let whoever had just shoved her have it until she realised it was you, your smaller frame wrapping tightly around hers.
"hey hey hey, stop. breathe." you rambled off a million questions a minute as several firefighters came strolling out the front door also unharmed, leahs hand coming to rest over your mouth.
"mila is fine, she's at my mums house for the night, she wasn't even in the neighbourhood when it went up." leah spoke firmly as your eyebrows shot up and you wrenched her hand off you. "when what went up leah? what the fuck happened!" you shoved at your wifes chest, anger masking the fear that was still set deep in your bones.
"thanks mate." leah smiled politely over your shoulder as one of your neighbours handed her the keys you'd left running in the car, advising he'd turned it off and locked it before ushering his own wife away, two police offers having arrived now to disperse the rest of the crowd.
"god this is going to be all over the news tonight." the blonde shuddered at the thought, quickly brought back to reality as you smacked her arm and she whined. "ow!" the defender rubbed her shoulder as you glared at her.
"what. the fuck. happened, leah?" you growled, interrupted yet again before she could answer as the captain of the fire department tapped your wifes shoulder. "you got very lucky. the blaze was contained quite easily and really its only caused damage to the one room-" you tuned him out at that, ducking away and marching off toward the house.
"thank you so much sir. really. its been a valuable lesson learned! i promise this will never happen again." leah rushed out, shaking the mans hand and standing up on tippy toes to catch the back of your head storming toward the front door.
"that the wife?" the man glanced behind him with a small chuckle as leah nodded frantically. "we'll make sure the rest of these lot clear off, and the police shouldn't need to speak to you, i'm happy to rule it an accident. good luck!" the man smiled, leah shaking his hand once again and racing off after you.
"leah. move." you warned sternly as your wife appeared in front of you right as you'd stepped through the door. "babe. now, before you take another step-" the blonde started as you scoffed, shoving past her as she winced and hurried after you.
"look love its not that-" but your jaw dropped, mouth wide open in a state of stunned shock, not a single word of leahs registered as you froze in the doorway, eyes scanning what you were sure used to be your kitchen.
"you-you-this-our-" you stammered out, hands flailing around wildly as leah rubbed the back of her neck with a grimace. "yeahh..." your wife whistled, able to take in all the damage properly herself now, though the chief hadn't been lying when he said she was lucky it was only the one room, the living room mainly untouched.
"you set the kitchen on fire!?" you rounded on her sharply, leah quickly backing up as you advanced until she backed into the fridge with a stumble. "a little?" your wife laughed nervously, your right eye twitching and leahs own gaze darted out to where the knives were, contemplating for a moment if she should move them out of your reach.
"but hey you hated that splash back! and with the insurance money it means we can start remodelling sooner, right?" she perked up hopefully as your mouth opened and closed, not even sure how to respond to that.
"how leah. how did this happen?" you spun back around away from her, eyes scanning the scorned and blackened walls in front of you as leah exhaled a small sigh of relief, subtly side stepping and pushing the knife block back out of sight.
"well. i knew you'd had a full on day and you'd be exhausted, so i organised with mum to take trouble for the night and i thought i'd make dinner-" you scoffed at that, the blonde shooting you a look.
"which i did!" she shooed you out of the way and pulled the fridge, which was mostly unscatched given it was on the other side of the room from the blaze, showing an oven dish of some sort covered over with foil.
"but then i tried making crème brûlée because i know thats your favorite, and i borrowed a blow torch-" leah started as your jaw dropped again and you shook your head in disbelief.
"you borrowed a blow torch!?" you spat out with wide eyes. "a cooking one!" leah tried to defend as you gave her a look. "i was just trying to see if it worked because i was going to finish them off once we'd had dinner and well..." the blonde guiltily gestured around as you exhaled shakily.
"i just-" you could only shake your head, staring at the damage as suddenly a million and one scenarios of how this could have ended very very differently came hurtling to the surface of your mind.
your wife grunted as suddenly you turned and rammed into her, face pressing into her neck and hugging her tightly as leah tensed up in surprised before quickly embracing you.
"i was so scared leah. i just saw the fire engine and-" you trailed off, body trembling in the blondes hold who gently shushed you. "i know love. i know. but i'm safe, mila is safe, you're safe, we're all okay." leah whispered softly, hand rubbing up and down your back as the two of you stood there hugging in silence, your wife not daring to even move until you did.
eventually your death grip on the blonde lessened a little, a few kisses pressed against your lips as your wife repeatedly assured everything was going to be okay but she knew it would take more than words and some time before you believed her.
"i'll call mum, we can stay at her place tonight with mila." leah spoke, reading your mind completely as your body sagged into hers with a small nod, adrenaline all wearing off now as the exhaustion returned and the defender tenderly kissed your forehead as you sighed.
"you are never allowed in the kitchen unsupervised ever ever again."

Light Cues
From the "find what works" department of my life...
I was telling my prescribing psychiatrist about this and he really loved it, and it occurred to me I'm not sure I've ever talked about it on here, but I've started using light cues instead of alarms for some things.
I don't use a lot of alarms regularly throughout the day (I don't need one to wake up unless I'm getting up at an unusual time, for example) but I use them for one-off stuff like "time to start getting ready to go out" or "today you have a doctor's appointment". I found after a while that with an alarm for a regular repeating task, there comes a point where I just silence it and forget to do the thing. Like, I have almost all notifications on my phone turned off and it's still muscle memory for me, as it is for many people, to have my phone beep for attention and just silence it unthinkingly. So I started using lighting cues.
It's evolved a lot, starting with the end of the workday. The lighting in my bedroom is all floor lamps; the one over my work desk is on a smart switch, which plugs into the wall and then the lamp plugs into the switch. I set the switch to turn the lamp on at 8am just before I start work, and off at 4:30pm to remind me to stop work, which I don't always remember to do. The light suddenly going out makes that corner unpleasantly dim, and it's more work to turn it back on (open phone, open app, find the right switch) than it is to stop work for the day.
Then I thought, this is so irritating it must be useful for other things. So I set it to go off from noon to 12:03pm. It's more of a pain in the ass to turn it back on than it is to get up, go to the kitchen, and do what I'm supposed to do at noon anyway: take my second Adderall dose. And the light is back on by the time I get back.
But I was running into the problem of taking the dose on an empty stomach as you're supposed to, but not having eaten since breakfast at like 5am. And now I'm in the kitchen. Having forgotten to eat my Early Lunch at 10:30. But the Adderall needs like 20 minutes to kick in before I eat, and by then I'm back at work, and then I wonder why I eat my body weight in pasta at 5pm.
So I set a light cue for 10:30 to remind me to take a break and eat. But I don't want to use the same cue for everything. The lamp on the other end of the bedroom doesn't have a smart switch but it does have a smart bulb, which is even more flexible, so at 10:30am it dims to 50% (irritating) and turns deep blue (doubly irritating). I leave the room, go eat lunch, and usually come back to sit on the bed with the cats for a few minutes. I don't mind the dim blue light when I'm on the bed -- I just can't work with it that way. So at 11 the light goes back to full white brightness and I get my cue to go back to work.
I have various other cues -- the living room lamps go off and the LED string on the headboard in the bedroom goes on low and red to indicate it's bedtime, and the LEDs go off a little later to remind me NO, it is BEDTIME NOW.
Obviously a lot of this is only possible with either analog daily timers or smart bulbs/switches, and those can be cost-prohibitive for some while others don't like having their lighting on the internet. But it's all switches and bulbs that I can remove easily, and they've come down a great deal in price -- mine are all Kasa brand so they're controlled from a single app, and I've found them extremely helpful.
Plus sometimes at night I put all the lights to deep blue and pretend I'm underwater and that's fun.

Retired Simon Riley!
Retired Simon Riley! and Baker F!Reader
He hated being retired, hated the knee injury that forced him to retire and hated the pain he felt when he overexerted himself or walked too much.
He just hated it.
But being retired didn't stop him from creating a new routine. Sure, he didn't have any more near-death missions or boring reports to write, but he did a good job with what he had.
He woke up at 5am every day, went for a walk with Riley at 5:30am and had coffee at the same coffee shop. He had lunch at 12pm and went for another walk with Riley at 5pm.
He got used to this routine, until his coffee shop closed, with another one opening in the same location the following month.
He hated it.
He liked the previous one, it was empty, the coffee was good and no one bothered him, but now? Now have a new and crowded coffee shop, with staring people all over the place and with more cakes than coffee on display.
He hated having to leave Riley outside, it was not a problem to enter with a dog in the previous cafe.
He hated the huge line to order as soon as he entered, he hated the little bell on the door that signaled when someone entered.
He hated the delay, he hated how bright and colorful that place was and most of all, he hated the change in his routine.
But all the hatred he was feeling just stopped when the baker turned to him to take his order. His mind stopped, his heart skipped a beat, and his body almost trembled, almost.
That little bird... Maybe retirement won't be so bad with a view of a birdie like that every day…

my take on batfam sleep schedules (and everything else they do)
bruce
10pm - 5am : patrol [7hr] 6am - 2pm : sleep [8hr] 3pm - 9pm : work from home, sometimes dinner with the kids [6hr]
bruce has the benefit of being able to choose his own work hours and work from home. still, he pushes himself round the clock to keep on top of his life as both batman and bruce wayne. his sleep is perfectly optimized and scheduled; not a minute more than he thinks he needs to operate at peak functionality.
dick
11pm - 4am : patrol [5hr] 5am - 1pm : sleep [8hr] 2pm - 10pm : work [8hr]
dick works full time, and his body naturally needs a lot of sleep, so regretfully, rather than cutting into his sleep time he cut into patrol time to make his schedule work. ideally, he'd be sleeping closer to 10 hours, but he can't afford it.
jason
6pm - 1am : work [7hr] 2am - 11am : sleep [9hr] 12pm - 5pm : whatever he wants basically [5hr]
jason has the least time crunch, because he's the only one whose "night job" actually pays. he has a pretty passive income as a crime lord. he just needs to go out every so often and remind the streets why they pay up to him.
tim
2am - 6am : patrol [4hr] 7am - 3pm : school [8hr] 3pm - 6pm : homework & hygiene/food [3hr] 6pm - 1am : sleep [7hr]
tim is not doing so well. i hc that tim is anemic and suffers from chronic fatigue, so he needs way more sleep than he is getting. he cant negotiate his class times, and he needs to do his homework in order to pass. he's not willing to cut patrol time down past 4 hours, so that leaves him with really not quite enough time to sleep. he's married to caffeine.
duke
11pm - 6am : sleep [7hr] 7am - 3pm : school [8hr] 4pm - 8pm : patrol [4hr] 8pm - 11pm : food, homework etc [3hr]
duke is only managing because he's okay with a shorter daily patrol and doesnt need as much sleep as tim. he's also the only batfam member who actually sleeps at night.
damian
10pm - 5 am : patrol with bruce [7hr] 5am - 6am : nap [1hr] 7am - 3pm : school [8hr] 4pm - 9pm : sleep [5hr]
damian does all his homework at hyperspeed during study hall and in the car driving to and from school. because he is insane. damian also has the ability to powernap like the dead. that 1hr actually does something for him.
cass
9pm - 6am : patrol [9hr] 7am - 4pm : sleep [9hr] 5pm - 8pm : whatever she wants basically [3hr]
cass, like jason, doesnt have a big time crunch due to being unemployed and not in school. yay! she used to spend time trying to learn to read and write, but it was just frustrating for her so eventually they decided she should quit.
you may notice that there is not a single time when they are all awake and available to have a family meal. they have to plan those well in advance. its a whole event.
