"Does a straw have one hole or two" was a shibboleth that flatlanders used to identify each other here in the three-dimensional world.

See, to us tridees, we see a hole and can identify the whole of the thing (if you'll excuse the pun). A one-sided hole in a big thing is basically a big divot:

Whereas a two-sided hole through something is like a big donut, or torus:

Just imagine the donut to be thin and tall, and whoops, there you go! You imagined a straw! The problem comes from the fact that flatlanders see a hole as the absence of a circle:

And so readily identify TWO 2-dimensional holes on a straw, one at each end.

This linguistic confusion, once it came to light, meant that flatlanders could easily use "how many holes in a straw?" To identify the other flatlander minds among a gathering of (presumably) tridee people. The flatlanders would all say "two!" or "an infinite stack of holes!" Which is a correct 2-dimensional understanding of a straw, and the tridees would mistakenly say "one hole, all the way through!"

This meant that flatlanders could identify each other with this simple phrase, which tridee acquaintances would mistake for a simple "isn't it weird that we all have different understandings of this thing?" conversation-starter and point of friendly contention.

Once this shibboleth came to light, it was no longer useful to flatlanders, and was actually used during the A4 riots of the late 1990s to identify and target flatlander citizens temporarily residing in tridees in suburban Omaha with violence.

In any case, if you want an ACTUALLY friendly point of contention, consider this:

"Given that gazpacho soup is definitely soup, what makes cereal in milk with a handful of raisins added NOT a soup? Also how many dimensions does soup have"

I finally took the time to photograph my vintage dip pen nib collection, and I need to share with you all how wonderful and diverse their designs are.

These two are my favorite. Just look at them! One of them is named Gorille and the other Mephisto, but to me they're little pumpkins.

And of course you gotta love the Pinocchio nib. You get to write with the nose of a tiny guy! Just not something you get to do anymore.
