huge deltarune chapter 3 spoilers

just spent a while digging around in the files of chapter 3 and stuff, here's a thread for anything interesting i found:

this last one just reads like it says "send him, quick"

found some incredibly weird audio files, they don't wanna upload to tumblr and i'm too tired to convert them right now, but the highlight are two files called "wet_tapdancing.ogg" and "wet_tapdancing_old" that honestly sound like someone flinging around a wet towel against a table or some shit. they are on tcrf at least

this guy has no name, whereas sprites are usually titled spr_(name of character), he's literally spr(four blank spaces)

kris's room and bathroom are titled 'myroom' and 'mybathroom' for some reason... but like the general house area, the living room and kitchen, isn't titled the same way

what is up with "teevie"… is that a thing we (deltarune fandom) knew? it shows up a lot, with stuff like the statues and decorations in the backroom kinda area tenna had a zapper guarding to keep the kids out of, so much so at first i was like "was teevie his original name" but then there was also stuff prefixed with teevie that then also had tenna in the url so i guess not?

rouxls's sprites are consistently called "rurus" which sounds kind of like maybe a japanese localization of his name almost? but in general i wonder if its easier to spell lmfao. god knows i didn't start being able to spell his name until this chapter

my brain is so fucking small, i genuinely cannot remember if this pic of "screen city" is used in the game:

i found all of tenna's fancy text, and a) all of it is labeled with "funnytext" and b) this text that said "amazing" in eng looks really fucking cool

in the english version, this text says "fun" instead, and it's still labeled "funnytext fun loop" but it's laughing in japanese for some reason.

jevil's door is in the files for no goddamn reason along with ralsei's chap 1 portraits

kris's sprites when they're doing that act that puts 'em in a suit are called "zoosuit" which presumably means "zoot suit". i remembred the phrase "zoot suit" now and i am smiling.

hi it's hours Now Days later i got a little sleep Better i was sick. i do actually want to bring up more things i think are interesting about the time period tenna is mostly riffing off of. these aren't related to the topic of tv itsself, but i realized they may still be entertaining to read about a little. so

back on the subject of his sprites. tenna's sprites are done using pre-rendered 3d (with the mouth and other expressive features drawn on in post) reminiscent of certain games for the SNES after the release of donkey kong country in 1994. (first words out of my mouth upon seeing him were OHHH HIS SILICON GRAPHICS ASS)

this method was used to give 2d games the appearance of rendered 3d where none was actually present, and was especially effective in games like super mario rpg. i doubt that this affect was achieved using the exact same technology as it would have been in the 90s, but the technique remains the same. model a character in full 3d, pose and take pictures of the model as needed for sprites, use a compression algorithm to reduce the color count (which was a crucial step for older games with limited color displays), and clean up/add on when necessary. i do definitely think his sprites were compressed automatically rather than by hand, seeing as several uncleaned sprites exist within the game that show artifacting around tenna's edges consistent with the messes compression algorithms can sometimes make

another fun thing to make note of are the references made in the "funnytext" he uses for emphasis. i'm firstly really interested in the text for "suziezilla". take a look at it:

rough, beveled text with a bowing/fisheye curvature, colored with a gradient. this style was fairly standard for the covers of localized heisei-era (1984-1995) godzilla films. (nothing to learn from the japanese version of this text, since it's changed to reference the more uniformly used godzilla logo in japan)

another fun thing is the usage of microsoft wordart, which was a featured offered in microsoft word starting from word 95 (1995).

this is actually fairly easy to generate online, too.

this is reminding me of something but i have no idea what.

my brain is telling me it's the mario bros. series, but my heart thinks it's something else. jury's out.

though this text does also contain one of many earthbound references in ch3, as the sound associated with the word is the famous "okdesuka" clip used in mother 2 and 3 as confirmation on the name entry screen. nice of shigesato itoi to provide his voice to deltarune<

another thing i want to talk about. in terms of what time period we're supposed to feel like he's around. are tenna's clothes! a lot of people overlook the importance of fashion in establishing several aspects of a character but i think a fairly good job was done with tenna. a great example of this is the visible shoulder padding on his coat. very very popular style in the 1980s in many settings but especially on television where a strong and commanding upper-body silhouette was highly desirable. there are other things this piece says (the long coattails and bright red color give him an air of exuberant showmanship not unlike what you might expect to see on a carnival ringleader) but the shoulder pads are really the standout to me

more specifically also on the. topic of his shoulder pads (this is interesting to me and that's what matters) is that the specific style of pad he's got going on was more popular in the late 80s. it's a sort of "oversized" pad that comes out well past the shoulder and bulges from the sleeve, incorporating the top of the arm into the shoulder silhouette. i personally think this looks phenomenal on everyone, but it's a reminder of how the 80s were a time so utterly dominated by their (often consumerist) excess that by the end of the decade everything was so big and flashy that many consider it almost comical in retrospect.

final thing i want to say is minor. but it is cool to me. tenna's battle theme (it's tv time!) is like. almost entirely a musical reference to TMNT 4 (the snes game). it's a pretty well known ost, though i think few people know the game itsself in comparison to how many people have heard the songs. anyways, the game is from 1991, so it's used often in content about retro games. if you're like me and are a 2000s baby, you'll mostly recognize the ost for its use in youtube videos about games much older than you. i personally had come to associate it with the concept of gaming nostalgia and didn't even realize until i'd heard it referenced here. i think that's cool

how old is tenna. like actually

okay so 4 hours ago at 2am i saw someone say tenna is from the 70s (likely because he's a game show host) and my gut reaction was There's absolutely no way that's true, he's for sure a late 80s or early 90s tv. but i realized if i were to believe that i should probably have a verifiable reason to, so i went and made sure i did my research to validate my opinion. my opinion has not changed, i still think he's probably supposed to be from the late 80s, but here's why i think that.

so. if i wanted to be anal retentive as fuck about it, i could say that if deltarune is meant to have a similar in-universe technological development timeline to ours irl, and if deltarune is indeed meant to take place in some analogous place to the united states, then tenna is likely no older than 18 (from 2007). because he's a crt receiving over the air signals, but past 2009 irl it would need to be a digital signal, and i assume deltarune takes place after 2009, and tenna crucially does not appear to have a converter box. which would mean he'd need to have that capability built in.

however, i like. really badly do not think that matters. not only am i positive he's meant to be much older than a tv from 2007, but i just don't think a detail that minuscule would be on anybody's list of priorities when designing an old tv in fiction.

so let's imagine none of that factors into how old he could be at all. what else can we go off of. primarily i want to first look at his design. you'll notice that although he verbally references one, tenna does not actually appear to have a dial in any visual we have of him. he doesn't even look like he has a button array of any kind.

this was extremely uncommon for the 1970s, especially for just everyday family households on an average budget. this wasn't, however, as uncommon after the 80s swung around. you'd still see a lot of tvs with dials on the side, but it wasn't so notably rare to see ones lacking in this control scheme.

part of this is likely due to the invention of the infrared remote, which would take television manufacturing by storm in the 80s. to be clear, wireless remotes for tvs did exist before this, but i specifically do think the zappers are infrared due to their attack patterns and sprite movements. if this is true (and especially if the zappers are universal remotes), then the existence of the zappers would support the assumption that tenna is from the 80s at the very earliest.

as an aside on the topic of tenna's appearance, while i do think the photorealistic images are more of a visual gag than anything meant to be like. concrete canon appearance of the guy. i do want to point out that the ridged edges he has were especially typical of 80s zennith tv sets. which makes sense to me, because zenniths were pretty state-of-the-art at the time.

another thing we could look at for clues to his age is the "programming" itsself. there are a few minor details to this i'd like to point out. none of these necessarily materially impact how old tenna could be, but seeing as he's already designed as a symbolic gesture towards nostalgia, understanding the references made with these small details can help us better construct what timeframe he's meant to evoke.

first of all, his reference to a "cooking channel". correct me if i'm wrong, but i'm pretty sure the first cooking channel broadcast in america was the food network, which is from the 90s. there is also literally a Cooking Channel (proper name) but i think it's from like 2002

secondly, the rhythm minigame. live music performances have been on the air forever and ever, but specifically the channel he's on is one dedicated to music videos. that wasn't hardly a thing at all until mtv. which is from the 80s. (Adding onto this point hours later hi. they're also specifically performing hair metal, which is. 80s.)

thirdly is the existence of lanino and elnina, who are (to me at least) a blatant reference to the weather channel. weather is a staple of television, of course, but i do mean the weather channel specifically. which is from the 80s. (also. this is going to seem like a stretch but the line "weather girls are the wave!" reminds me of the work done by 2nd wave feminists to make it so that more women could go into news network jobs. so that's cool)

i do also want to point out an even smaller tidbit. tenna interrupts (or claims to interrupt) his normal programming for breaking news. this was not impossible, per se, before the 80s, but it didn't become a regular occurrence until the 80s as well, after the inception of CNN. again, this doesn't mean tenna wasn't possibly at all manufactured sooner than this, but thinking about this from a fiction writing perspective, what matters here is what tenna is mean to make the player feel. these references are ones to a world post-cnn, post-food network, post-mtv. it's an expression of fondness for a very specific past.

this is also true in how older tech itsself is utilized. the tv time intro being played back with vhs effects is telling to me, because vhs wasn't the dominant household market video format until the 80s and 90s. this is even present in the format of the game show. it's a merging of the game show concept and the prevalent force of 90s video games. television programs based on video games weren't uncommon at the time, as they were essentially literally an attempt to teach an old dog new tricks. nick arcade came to mind right away for me the first time i saw the boards.

so that's why i think he's supposed to be 80s or 90s tech. honestly, this still makes him a ridiculously old crt. most crts on a regular use schedule will last a while, but only a little over a decade.

anyways so that's my stance. i;m so so tired
