Is AI going to be the future of web browsing? - The Times of India
Representative image (Picture credit: NYT) When was the last time you thought about your web browser? If you don’t remember, no one will blame you. Web browsers have remained fundamentally unchanged for decades: You open an app, such as Chrome, Safari or Firefox, and type a website into the address bar, and off you go. A web browser is important because so much of what we do on computers takes…

AI Browsers: The Future of Online Search
Tumblr media
For over two decades, web browsers like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Safari, and Firefox have shaped the way we explore the internet. They have become an everyday tool, just like books once were for libraries. But now, something entirely new is emerging—a new type of browser that doesn’t just let you search but helps you think, decide, and act. These are AI browsers, and they might soon change the way we use the internet completely.

Perplexity Launches Comet: An AI-Powered Web Browser for the Future of the Internet
Perplexity AI is entering a bold new chapter in AI innovation with the launch of its latest product: Comet, an artificial intelligence-powered web browser. Designed to redefine how users interact with the internet, Comet combines AI-powered search with enterprise integration and advanced conversational features — and it’s available now to select Perplexity Max subscribers.
Tumblr media
“built Comet to let the internet do what it has been begging to do: to amplify our intelligence.” Perplexity launched its AI-powered browser Comet for $200/month subscribers with voice/text capabilities. Comet integrates with enterprise tools like Slack and delivers AI-driven answers with citations. Comet is a step toward a smarter, more intuitive internet experience powered by conversational AI.

FAQ
What’s the Innovation? A New Era of Browsing Begins
Comet isn’t just a browser — it’s a smart assistant.
While traditional browsers rely on users navigating through countless tabs and links, Comet is built to deliver direct, intelligent answers to queries using natural language processing. Users can interact with the browser via voice or text, turning the act of browsing into a seamless conversation.
“We built Comet to let the internet do what it has been begging to do: to amplify our intelligence,” Perplexity stated in a blog post.
Key Features of Comet: What It Can Do
AI-Powered Conversational Interface: Ask complex questions via voice or text, and get accurate, sourced answers instantly.
Enterprise App Integration: Connect with workplace tools like Slack to make your workflow smarter and faster.
Real-Time AI Assistance: Navigate and consume information using an AI agent that can summarize, search, and cite sources.
Subscriber-Exclusive Access: Currently available only to Perplexity Max users (priced at $200/month).
Invite-Only Rollout: Access is being rolled out gradually over the summer via a waitlist.
When Was It Introduced?
Comet was officially launched on July 10, 2025, with immediate access for Perplexity Max subscribers. Wider availability is expected later this year as feedback from early users shapes its development.
Why This Matters
Comet represents a new frontier in web browsing, where AI doesn’t just fetch content — it understands, summarizes, and contextualizes it. With growing frustration over traditional search engines overloaded with ads and SEO-driven fluff, Comet promises a clean, direct, and intelligent experience.
Perplexity is positioning itself as a serious competitor to Google and Microsoft in the battle for the next-gen internet.
Additionally, this launch follows news that Perplexity is raising $500 million at a $14 billion valuation, highlighting investor confidence in its disruptive approach.
How Comet Is Different from Traditional Browsers
Unlike Chrome or Edge, which focus on performance and compatibility, Comet is conversation-first. It treats the web as an extension of your brain — an AI-powered tool to enhance thinking and learning, not just a way to load websites.
Key differences include:
AI-summarized web results with source citations
Natural language-driven actions instead of typing queries into a search bar
Real-time integration with business tools

Blind Tumblr users: don’t get the latest iOS app update!
I just updated my tablet to the newest version of the tumblr app for iOS and it completely broke screen reader access for both VoiceOver and Spoken Content. This has happened in the past already, so I will file a support ticket and copy-paste my text from last time, but this really sucks. I sincerely hope this doesn’t affect all screen reader users, but I’m unsure how they could program this bug in a way it only affects me. If you rely on a screen reader to use the tumblr app, I’d advice to not get the latest update to be on the safe side.
When I say “completely broke access”, what I mean is that no posts on my dash or on individual blogs get read or recognized at all. No plain text, alt text, tags, etc. Note count and buttons still work though.
If you also run into this bug, here’s my advice. If anyone has something more useful, please tell me
File a support ticket and report this bug
Use the browser web version, which still works for me
Interestingly, if you save a post to your drafts and click on “edit” the post text seems to get read correctly. This might be a work-around for some people.
If you have the latest version but your screen reader didn’t break, also please tell me! I would be fascinated to know if this bug is only affecting some people
TL;DR: The latest tumblr app update for iOS made it so screen readers no longer work in the app
Please boost!
Edit: This issue is now fixed as of November 10th 2023. However, since this is a recurring issue, it’s possible that a future update will break it again. See notes for more details.

Totally Chrome users are surprised by a new warning from Google.
Although it shouldn’t, numerous would be surprised to learn that Google has issued a new admonition to its 2 billion+ Chrome users. However, this can significantly change the behavior of the browser, as it affects a requirement but little-known feature.

Do you think it's a good idea to try and get away from Google Docs when it comes to writing? I really can't afford any other fancy program to write my drafts in, and it honestly seems like the easiest - not to mention, most convenient - program to use to share my manuscript with beta readers. I could use advice on this matter because I keep seeing things across the net about it being a bad place to work on writing, but I have no idea what to turn to to make things easy for me and my future beta readers.
This is such a good question. Thank you.
So, a little backstory. Ever since Google removed their motto "do no evil" they have gone down the rather predictable path of all big players of the rot economy: putting profits over user experience.
A little while back, there was rumor that Google trains AI with the content of google docs, then they said they don't really, they only scan the content and do nothing with it, and then they started blocking access to documents with sexy images. Do we believe that Google has our own best interest at heart? That's something everyone has to decide for themselves.
Back then, I made a post with alternatives for Google Docs, you can find it here, also check the reblogs for more options:
Now, is it a good idea to switch from google docs? I think it is, but I'm also not consistent with it. As you mentioned, it seems to be the easiest to share writing with beta readers, and I also still often use it for fanfiction.
But there are alternatives, and they require very little adjustment in the process. Let me give you two free options.
Ellipsus is webbased, meaning you can write in it in the browser on any device. They have sharing, specifically for beta reading, and an export function for AO3.
Reedsy (marketplace around everything self-publishing) has an editor. It is webbased, and they also have an option for sharing with beta readers. This software is aimed at book type-setting and exporting but it works just fine for copying to web.
Personally, I'm currently switching everything to LibreOffice (also free!) files in some cloud connected folder. I used to do a lot of mobile writing on my phone with a bluetooth keyboard but currently, I'm taking my laptop everywhere so LibreOffice works great for me. If I have to use my phone or tablet for some lightweight mobile writing, on vacation for instance, I can still use something webbased.
So, I hope I gave you some interesting options. Do I think it's a good idea to make us less dependent on Google? Yes, I do. I don't trust them.
We have alternatives, and they cost us nothing more than a little adjustment.

hey! if you've been following me for my game dev stuff here's an end-of-year summary
i would've liked to release a lot more things this year but between me moving and other life events i've been a little tight on focus and that's before accounting me being just very slow as a person!
nevertheless, here's what's been accomplished this year:
Cookie Clicker android update - this one was a LONG time coming and is the main reason i'm not writing this year off as unproductive. i've put a lot of care and time into it and i can say i'm proud of that release. some of it will help improve Cookie Clicker on web and Steam in future updates, ie. full offline idling and UI rework. a second, sizeable mobile update is planned at some point later to add sugar lumps, minigames etc
substantial headway on Cookie Clicker's dungeon minigame! it's been a lot of gameplay + layout tests, some resulting in design dead-ends ie. this whole "making the world map in Blender" notion i had. it's regardless seen the most progress it's had in a long time; i'm hoping next year will have me keeping my ambitions in check and keeping it simple enough for a proper beta release. sorry i couldn't make it happen this year again!…
various prototypes that started off as minor side-projects for a laugh or as code warmups but turned out oddly solid? i'd really like to keep pursuing some of these next year to the point where i can start showing off screens and playable alphas. said prototypes include an embeddable music composer/player, a painterly mini-photoshop and some kind of Pokemon-lite with level editor, all browser-based
a good amount of other behind-the-scenes Cookie Clicker-related stuff i'm hoping i get to disclose next year
2025 will see me starting fresh in a new town and hopefully with a steadier outlook on the way i get things done. i've started a good amount of new stuff this year that i'd like to finish in the next one. i'm writing this when i should be packing to visit my family for christmas i'll be right back

Y/N shouldn’t be jealous. Ever, really, and she knew that.
Harry had never given her any indication that he would ever have a straying eye. He was borderline obsessed with her, the admission coming from his mouth multiple times a week, treated her like the sun and moon both revolved around her, but that didn’t stop the uneasy feeling she felt when he watched Bonnie laugh a little too hard at something he said.
She was an old friend of his. A family friend, at this family cookout that they’d been invited to. Y/N had been quickly introduced to her and she had felt it since then. There was a way women knew. It’s an intuition, really, knowing someone was into your man. And Bonnie had it written all over her.
Harry was slightly oblivious and Y/N knew that. He was quietly friendly with the people here- they were his family, for fucks sake! But that didn’t mean he liked this not-actually-family-but-longtime-friend placing her hand on his bicep as she giggled and batted her lashes at him.
Y/N was helping his mum in the kitchen, trying her best to do what a hopeful future daughter in law would do, but it was hard to concentrate when she had a direct view outside of the both of them. Harry had been dragged into a conversation with her and as much as Y/N didn’t love the idea of leaving him alone with her, she was secure enough to know that Harry wouldn’t do anything, let alone flirt back. She could tell just by the look on his face that he wasn’t.
When Harry was flirting, she knew it. And she’d only ever seen that face be directed towards her.
“Thank you for helping me.” His mum grinned, wiping her hands on her apron. “I won’t keep you. Come back in a little bit if you’d like to help slicing these up but I want you to go out and get a drink, please. Make yourself at home.”
It wasn’t the first time she had met Harry’s family and his mum seemed to like her but she wanted to keep that going. “Of course.” She chirped. “I never mind helping. Yell for me if you need me and I’ll come running, okay?”
His mum laughed loudly before playfully pushing her out towards the patio. Secretly she had wondered if she had seen her distraction and wanted her to go out and self soothe, but she wouldn’t know.
Jealousy wasn’t an emotion she felt a lot but she felt it now. It wasn’t one she liked either. Usually she could get over women simply looking at him or grinning at him, even if they hit on him before she would arrive because there was always the chance they didn’t know he was taken- but Bonnie did. She knew good and well that Harry was taken and she didn’t like that she was touching him so much.
Selfishly, unrealistically, she wanted to be the only one that got to touch him. She had asked her therapist if that was toxic and she’d said slightly but she reassured her that it was human nature. It wasn’t like she stopped it from happening, but the desire was still there.
She made her way towards the pair with her head high and schooled features- because in no way was she going to give the girl satisfaction in knowing that even for a moment she’d been insecure- but it seemed her boyfriend knew what she needed.
“There she is.” He grinned, stepping away from Bonnie to gather her into his arms and smack a kiss to her forehead. “Did mum hold you hostage or somethin’?”
“No.” She relaxed into his body as he made no move to let go of her. “She was lovely as always. I was helping her with the last of the pies. It wasn’t any trouble.”
“Mmmm… She wants to steal you away because she said she wants you t’come over more. ‘Wants to know her future daughter’, all of that.” Harry let that go casually and a tiny (humongous) piece of her felt satisfaction seeing the lingering woman’s face fall at that.
Yes, it was sad for her that a man she liked wasn’t available. Harry was strong, stable, handsome, doting, absolutely fucking perfect. But… he was Y/N’s.
“Well I told her we’d come for dinner next week.” Resting her hand on his chest she played with the collar of his shirt. “So I’m giving into her antics. But when she cooks like that, I can’t really complain.” Harry’s mum was an incredible chef and she knew her own would never compare to it so… she was more than happy to eat yummy food and get to know his family better. “Besides. I do want to get to know my new family. Is that so wrong?” Was she pulling out all the stops, giving her the best doe eyes she could muster and laying it on a bit thick? Yes. And she was only a tiny bit ashamed.
“Fuckin’ love you, Y’know that?” It seemed as if as soon as Y/N had made it into his vicinity he forgot about anyone else. Bonnie still stood awkwardly close but his full focus was on her. Rude? Maybe to someone else, and she would have to be in charge of making sure she redirected… but for now? She was going with the flow.
“I love you more.” Pecking his cheek, she saw him pull back and look offended.
“Proper kiss. Please and thank you.” He muttered. “S’quite rude. Don’t deny me of what I need, thank you.”
Y/N really never had anything to worry about.

Where will Swindle go if Tumblr goes down for good?
Hello, everyone, Artsy here.
So I'm aware that a lot of people are worried about tumblr potentially being shut down, and while that isn't necessarily the most likely case scenario, we wanted to make sure people had a way of reading this comic without having to download it in the event that we could no longer host it here.
The solution to that was to make a dedicated website for Swindle! This link should open up your web browser if you're accessing us from the tumblr app - please bookmark the website! I tried to code it in a way that would make it appealing and easy to use from either desktop or mobile devices!
In the future, it might be interesting to implement a sort of comments section, though I'm not keen to do so while we're still on hiatus, and don't see the point of it if tumblr is still up and running. Otherwise, I think it's about as complete as it could be! If you have feedback, please let us know! And if you've visited the website before, you may need to clear your browser's cache/cookies/site data in order for it to properly update (your browser is still storing the old HTML code and you need to clear that!)

hiii im trying to get into original tsukihime and i noticed theres a web browser version and a downloadable version, do you know if theres any difference between the two and if ones more worthwhile than the other? i couldnt find anyone talking about it online 🥺 i trust ur expertise 🙏
it's an easy call to just say the browser version
the fact I can say that at all without being sideways about it shows what a labour of love it was, and how much I appreciate the fact that the most stable version of tsukihime (tbf not a high bar to cross) is also the most accessible
but I want to elaborate that a little, so I'll ramble about it a bit. you can ignore everything after this if you just wanted the answer!
the downloadable version is, of course, the original and most authentic version, so it will prime you for an easier transition into the plus and kagetsu tohya games, which feel much older
that being said, the browser version is genuinely going to be a better time for you in most regards. the original tsukihime is old enough that it churns on a technical level and I'd say it would actually probably make for a pretty good first reading experience
this is a different stance than I take on the browser version of Fate/stay night, which is also really good, but made for an entirely different purpose (it's tooled around allowing you to search up scenes and cite them, so it's got less of a focus on preserving presentation)
my main criticisms of the browser version all come down to modernisations in text display style and like... display ratio. they DO include a display ratio selection option, so the latter is basically a non-issue
it also feels important to get this out of the way even though it barely factors in: there isn't a retranslation of tsukihime. both english versions use the same translation, and the browser version pulls ahead in this regard by allowing you to hot-swap script translations
so my answer is going to end up being entirely down to how much of a sicko you're willing to be about this. if you really want that oldschool doujinsoft charm and can stomach the nightmares that come with it, the download version might be for you
circling back to the beginning, the broad spectrum recommendation at this point, from me, for the foreseeable future, is the browser version
