The average carriage takes about 3 Earth years from sparking

to emergence! A long time to you humans, surely! But a quick process considering our very long lives! And it affects us in some similar and some dramatically different ways!

Stoodie: A cybertronian's gestation goes through four key phases!

Phase one: The first phase of a carriage is called "The Orbit". This phase starts the second after two or more sparks participate in a merge that successfully causes one of the creator's sparks to fissure from the electrical surge and ignite a proto-spark.

Over the course of 2-5 hours, this proto-spark will spin chaotically from the energy still surging through it from the merge. In this state, it will either destabilize and fizzle out into nothing, or if a stable rotation and energy level is achieved, it will form its own orbit around the adult spark. The proto-spark, completing its first full stable orbit, signals the start of its journey.

Over the following month, the sparkling's orbit will change the nature of its new carrier's spark. The two will form a small gravitational field as they pull at each other. The presence of that field of influence causes the carrier's spark to release an energy signature signaling to the rest of their systems to begin construction of a body for this new energy. Sparks do not like to share their chambers, you see, so it becomes the frame's mission to get this new spark out of it. This is the end stage of the first phase of gestation and is usually when a Cybertronian discovers they are carrying, as they will feel a strange fluttering static inside their chest. That is, unless it's discovered earlier by physically opening the spark chamber for whatever reason.

Phase Two: Well, now we've got a little bitty one on the way, who needs a body, and how does the Carrier build that body? Well, first, they will need resources! The carrier will spend the remainder of the first year of their carriage accumulating resources like energon, metal, and nanites and stockpiling them in special ways.

For example, the metal that will physically build the little one is stored in Carrier's own armor. Now, to store that access metal without symphoning what the carrier needs for their own body, the excess metals and minerals are added onto the carrier's armor, physically increasing their density and making them much sturdier to protect the delicate newspark inside, but also much heavier! Most carriers will weigh 5-15 tons more, depending on the sparkling frame type, by the end of this stage of sparkling development. But that armor is tougher than a tank's during it, protecting both baby and parent!

One of the most important stockpiled resources in this phase are construction nanites from the sire, after all if the carrier's frame only used their own nanites, they would just try and program and grow a clone of the carrier, which might cause spark-frame disconection errors as this new body would try and steal the carrier's spark and not the one it was intended for. So nanites need to be taken from the Sire so that there are two different codes interchanging information to build a body tuned to the sparkling's unique frequency that was generated when it was sparked. This ensures that the only spark leaving the carrier's spark chamber at emergence is the sparkling's.

There are many ways for a carrier to harvest the sire's Nanites, and each couple has their preferences. The most efficient is for the sire and the carrier to do a cross-feed connection with fuel lines found in their chassis. While it is the fastest and most efficient way to transfer the nanites, as this method only needs to be used once, most bots find it the most boring, as you have to basically sit there and do nothing until the carrier's storage tank has filled.

Another example that I guess could be considered appropriate in terms of content, though I find it rather barbaric, is Syphoning. Akin to how you humans portray vampires, a carrier with pronounced fang-like denta can bite and steal the nanites from their partner. Obviously, many bots try and avoid needing to syphon as it's not exactly a painless way of doing it, but one that has developed in our species in the event of an emergency situation. Carriers are known to develop permanently pronounced canines during carriage, and it's common for some to have a medic reduce them down.

There was an old saying that you could tell a bot had carried either many bitlets or multiple times the longer their canines were. That, of course, was a tall tale and has no scientific backing to prove that the number of sparkling a carrier has effects the length of their denta. Anywho, we are getting distracted, moving on!

Phase Three: This is the longest phase in the carrying process and lasts 2 years! During this phase, the gestation chamber takes over primary control of the creator's T-cog to change its structure, which also means the carrier loses the ability to shift into their altmode the deeper into this phase the carriage gets. And like anyone going through gestation emotions can run wild!

It goes from being a rather small, unnoticeable spherical chamber under the spark chamber to a structure that could best be described as a clawed servo that spans a majority of the hollow space it's created through the T-cog in the chassis. This clawed servo structure forms an antigravity field only within the sphere of influence it has between its digits. It fills this gravitational void with a dark and thick, viscous material composed of energon, nanites, plastics, oils, and metals. It has the consistency of the earth food, jello. Inside this ball of goo is where the sparkling body will be constructed. And thanks to the antigravity field that protects the space, it doesn't matter how hard the carrier is jostled, the sparkling's frame will not move inside this space and is protected from physical damage.

During phase 3, both sets of construction nanites (sire and carrier) work in tandem to construct the sparkling's frame. This process takes a long time because the nanites do not always get along, and one team may deconstruct the parts the other group has constructed. In the first year of the building, both creators' nanites will fight each other over what elements and features they want to remain in the final construction. From the color of the optics to the shape of the olfactory and even the final altmode class, all these necessary components are determined by the winner of the individual fight when construction first occurs.

By the second year of the construction phase, the nanites have settled on what features to build and focus solely on building. That's why some sparkling may look more like one creator than another; it's all due to which creators' nanites were the more successful in fighting for their preferred features. By the end of the carriage, all of the sire's nanites will have died off from fuel deficiency and will be recycled as material into the sparkling's frame.

Phase Four: Once the sparkling's frame is constructed, a portion of the carrier's nanites will sacrifice themselves to cause an electrical pulse to activate the sparkling's frame. This activation Is temporary and lasts only long enough for the frame to let off a signal tuned to the newsparks frequency, which coaxes the sparkling to leave its carrier's spark and descend from the spark chamber of its carrier into the gestation chamber where it will be locked into its brand new spark chamber. Once that new chamber is fully sealed, the sparkling frame jolts from new life activation protocols and the emergence protocol begins!

This is a very delicate task but also very straightforward. The carrier will be driven by the C.A.R.I.E protocol to seek a safe, quiet, and secluded space for emergence due to its delicate nature. During this phase over the course of 2-7 days on average the carrier will be in "labor" as their frame opens their chassis and moves the carriers spark chamber out of the way to quite literally drop out the sparkling. The carrier will drop onto their elbows and knees so gravity can do the work and the ejection has the lightest impact.

and TADAAA! You have yourself a fresh bitty! They are but a fraction of the adult's size and have zero kibble or color outside their spark, optic, and biolight color. So teeny and helpless and precious.

though the development of a sparkling outside of its carrier is a lesson for another day!

Interactive Text-Based Horror Story

Hello!!! I've decided to explore using Tumblr's poll feature to create an interactive text-based horror experience. The story will progress through daily posts containing short narrative paragraphs followed by a 24hr poll with 2-4 story options.

The story is called The Visitor and follows an unnamed main character as they wake up in a strange town with no recollection of how they arrived here and no obvious way to leave. Part One has just been posted, introducing you to the story and presenting you with your first decision to make.

reminder/tip, particularly for newer pjo fans: do not crosstag!

for those who don't know, crosstagging is tagging irrelevant tags on a post, usually popular tags to try and get more views on the post.

Tumblr doesn't work the same way instagram or tiktok or twitter does. Crosstagging is considered spam, and your blog will be flagged if you do this.

particularly in pjo fandom, crosstagging includes tagging characters that don't actually appear in the post, tagging books or series unrelated to the post (like tagging "TSATS" on a post not specifically about TSATS, or tagging HoO on a post about first series specifically, etc.), tagging "pjo fanfic" or "pjo headcanon" or similar on a post that, obviously, isn't that, and/or tagging irrelevant ships. More recently, this also includes tagging the show (PJO TV, etc) on posts that are completely irrelevant to the show.

This mostly only applies for original posts - Tags you put on reblogs only apply to your own blog's organizational system, and has no bearing on the original post itself. But it's really annoying to the original poster if you spam tags, because it will appear in their notifs. It's pointless to spam tags in reblogs for these reasons regardless, so it's best not to.

just remember: crosstagging is not allowed on tumblr, doesn't work that way here anyways, and is just generally rude. so don't do it.

An updated tagging guide for the pkmnirl community. 

TL;DR

If you like using the stakes tag system and already know how they work, consider adding #heightened emotional state pokereality and #altered perception pokereality to your repertoire. A brief explanation of each below. Full explanation below the read more.

#heightened emotional state pokereality can be used with topics pertaining (but not limited) to: suicide ideation, discussions of self harm, psychosis, limerence, depressive spirals, paranoia, or high levels of anxiety.

#heightened emotional state pokereality does not necessarily include low level anxiety or depression that does not cause major disruption to everyday life. It does not include just being very angry or upset. This is for heightened emotional states often brought about by mental health crises of some kind.

#altered perception pokereality can be used with topics pertaining (but not limited) to: delusions, hallucinations, traumatic flashbacks, brainwashing, or instances of a character being gaslit.

#altered perception pokereality does not necessarily include things like unreality or benign religious beliefs. This is for aspects of a character's reality that does not reflect material reality in a way that may be distressing for the character or potential readers.

These are not meant to replace content warnings, but might allow people to filter them more quickly.

The Tagging Guide

Over a year and a half ago this community introduced the stakes tag system. Originally proposed by prof-hemp420, the stakes tag system gave us the navigation tags we have today. It is the system we still use here on our blog, mind you with some simplifications. It came to my attention that these tags may not be as widely known by newcomers and that the introduction of other tags could prove helpful for tagging major events, posts, and even blogs. 

First off, let's go back over the previous system, then we will propose some new additions. It should be stated preemptively none of these tags are meant to replace individual warning tags (your content warnings and trigger warnings) but instead to give people less individual tags they may want to block or search through on a moment’s notice. For when you aren’t quite sure what to tag something, this can help you. 

The Stakes Tags

#no stakes pokereality - As the name implies this is for zero stakes situations. These are your everyday posts. There is no expectation to tag your casual posts with this, it more so comes in handy for distinguishing that a larger event will have no major stakes involved. 

#low stakes pokereality - A step up from nostakes, some mundane conflict may happen, but everything is going to turn out okay. 

#drama stakes pokereality - This is the tag for drama and disturbances. The kind of tag you use when your character is getting in a screaming match with someone at a public restaurant. A plotline utilizing drama stakes may be high emotion, but no one is going to end up badly harmed. This tag may be tacked onto another tag to provide further context. i.e. these characters will argue but the conflict itself is kept relatively low stakes

#high stakes pokereality - In short, people will be hurt but everyone will survive more or less in one piece. This is for your canon compliant evil team plotlines where the protagonists lives and maybe even the entire region is at stake. 

#ultra stakes pokereality - Same as high stakes, but with the acknowledgement that death or serious lasting consequences are now on the table. A Pokemon or person may die or end up in critical condition. Proceed with caution. 

#dark fate pokereality - A rarely used tag that was proposed for Bad Ending scenarios. Extreme amounts of death or injury will be present, and people are not expected to come out of this okay in the end. This tag would most likely be tacked onto ultra stakes if it was used, though examples of this are limited. 

These tags can be used for events, individual posts, or even in more current iterations blogs themselves! It is common to label a blog your high stakes or low stakes blog to give people a general indication of what to expect. 

Now! Onto the two new tags we want to propose. With the focus on interpersonal conflicts and discussions of mental illness on a lot of blogs lately (including our own!), it felt appropriate to give general tags to use for these plotlines as well. Again, these would not replace content warnings or trigger warnings, but may offer the ability for people to filter as needed. Sometimes a person might be in a less stable place than typical, and sometimes individual content warnings can slip through the cracks due to how many variations there can be between blogs. These subjects can be triggering for individuals caught unaware.

The New Tags

#heightened emotional state pokereality - A mouthful, we know. This tag would be useful for posts or plotlines that involve characters experiencing emotional instability. It’s for things like depressive spirals, psychosis, or suicide ideation. If it is enough to impede their every day function or seems like a heavy topic to discuss, this may be applicable.

This does not necessarily include low level anxiety or depression that does not cause major disruption to everyday life. It does not include just being very angry or upset. This is for heightened emotional states often brought about by mental health crises of some kind.

#altered perception pokereality - Not to be confused with unreality, which you can find a helpful explanation of here. Altered perception can be for when your character’s beliefs do not reflect their material reality. An example of this would be your character experiencing delusions, hallucinations, or traumatic flashbacks. In a fictionalized world, it can be hard to distinguish when a character is perceiving something not truly there. 

This does not necessarily include things like unreality or benign religious beliefs. 

FAQ

Why do these tags all say pokereality? 

This is to distinguish them as part of the pkmnirl community and to prevent them from being construed as real life events. 

Do I stop using individual content warnings or trigger warning tags?

As previously mentioned please do not stop using individual warning tags! These are merely shorthand to allow people to filter things quickly. The unfortunate fact of the matter is individuals tag these things differently, meaning that if someone wants to effectively remove that content from their dash they must account for every possible variation. While well meaning, this means things inevitably slip through the cracks, we hope this may offer additional help in lessening the frequency of that.

Removing these warnings completely though would run the risk of people still being exposed to sensitive topics. In some instances an individual might be unaffected by discussions of paranoia but they are negatively affected by discussions of self harm. It's important that these tags and warnings be used in combination for them to be effective.

How do I know if my blog is high stakes or low stakes?

You do not have to label your blog as any particular stakes level. If you feel like you may dabble in higher stakes occasionally, but want to stay relatively low stakes, that is absolutely fine! Do not feel like you have to box yourself into something. You can always change your mind later. 

I have a low stakes blog. Can I interact with high stakes ones?

That is down to the individual blog, but generally speaking yes! Blogs of varying stakes can interact with one another. This does not mean your blog has to become high stakes or that their blog has to become low stakes. 

Should I tag all of my posts as unreality? I don’t want to upset anyone! 

Tagging mundane pkmnirl posts as unreality unfortunately creates the opposite problem. People who need that tag blocked but still want to interact with the pkmnirl community then have to essentially gamble on whether or not a flagged post will contain something that will actually trigger a negative response or a regular old post about a character catching a pidgey outside the pokemart. Using a pkmnirl tag is fine. Consider pkmnirl, pkmn irl, rotomblr, rotumblr, pokeblogging, real pokemon, pokereality or some other variation to distinguish these from everyday posts on someone's dash.

Do I use #heightened emotional state pokereality or #altered perception pokereality for [X]?

If you aren’t sure it might be both! The stakes tags are mutually exclusive in most cases, but these are not. A psychosis episode will often have someone believing things that are not true about their material reality while also causing them to be in an unstable emotional state. In cases like these both tags apply.

Are heightened emotional states always bad?

We are not licensed professions to speak on the topic but to put things generally using these tags does not have to come with any moral judgment. That goes for the writer(s) and the character(s) involved.

Why did you repeat stuff so much in this guide?

People might not read all of it. We wanted to make sure that even people who might skim parts of this guide still understand the most important aspects of it.

I don’t want to use these tags!/This seems like too much effort! Or some variation thereof.
