I am here with but one simple request, jack with a non-confrontational, socially anxious reader! it’s such a contrast with his own confrontational manner and lone-wolf nature that I think would be quite interesting to explore (๑>ᴗ<๑)
love your writing, keep up the good work ^_^ ♡

You had always known that group projects were simply another nook of purgatory established to make life that much more devious to get through.
The very idea of them gave your stomach leeway to twist into anxious knots, constricting like a boa until you couldn't breathe anymore. It wasn't that you didn't like people (okay, perhaps a little), but it was more so that you didn't know what to do with them. The talking. The awkward "who's doing what" conversation. The silent tug-of-war when nobody wanted to take the lead, and everyone kept glancing around, waiting for someone to volunteer. You'd rather write five essays alone in a cave than do one group project with three strangers who barely remember your name.
So when Professor Trein announced a four-person Herbology research project, you nearly curled up under your desk and died on the spot.
And of course, fate - cruel, ironic fate - put Jack Howl in your group.
Jack, with his gruff voice and stone-faced demeanor. Jack, who didn't care if someone got upset when he said what he really thought. Jack, who had no problem walking straight into confrontation like it was a warm summer breeze.
You were going to die. Or cry. Possibly (most likely) both.
The rest of your group was rounded out by a loudmouth from Savanaclaw named Yulan, who had opinions about everything, and a sleepy Octavinelle student who you were 90% sure was just in it for the grade. That left you, nervous, anxious, and wouldn't-say-boo-to-a-ghost you, trying desperately to keep things from going up in smoke.
The first meeting went about as well as expected.
"I'm just saying, if we're talking about magical soil composition, we have to include the variant growth properties from the Scarabia greenhouse. That stuff is wild."
"Yeah, but that's not what the assignment's asking for," Jack cut in, arms crossed. "It says we need to focus on herbological integration in real-world applications, not theory."
"I am talking about a real-world application!"
"Not if you can't prove it," Jack said flatly.
Yulan slammed a notebook on the table. "You wanna bet?"
You could practically feel your soul saying goodbye to your body.
"Um...maybe we can, uh, do both?" You squeaked, almost whispering.
Neither of them heard you.
"Alright, I'm done arguing," Jack growled, standing up. "If you want to waste your time, go for it. But I'm not failing because someone can't read a prompt."
Yulan bristled. "Who're you calling someone, dog boy?"
You slid a little further down in your seat.
And yet, even after the shouting and the note-slinging and the pure chaos of that first meeting, Jack stayed behind when the others left.
You hadn't said a word in the last fifteen minutes. Just scribbled things in your notebook and tried not to look like you wanted to evaporate.
Jack leaned against the table, arms crossed, looking almost...thoughtful.
"Hey," He said. "You okay?"
You blinked. "Huh?"
He nodded toward your still-white-knuckled grip on your pen. "You looked like you were about to bolt."
You flinched. "I...I don't really do well with conflict. Or people in general."
Jack's ears twitched. "I could tell."
You braced yourself for the judgement. The teasing. The "well, toughen up" speech.
But it never came.
Jack looked away, scratching the back of his neck. "Didn't mean to snap like that. I just hate when people don't listen. It's not personal."
You blinked again. Slowly. "You...weren't mad at me?"
He snorted. "You didn't do anything."
That shouldn't have made you tear up the way it did.
"Thanks," You said softly. "I, um...I wanted to say something, but I didn't want to make it worse."
He looked down at you, golden eyes narrowing slightly. Not in judgement. In...curiosity?
"You always like this with people?" He asked.
You nodded mutely.
Jack grunted. "Then I'll talk to them."
"What?"
"I'll keep the loud ones off your back. You focus on the research stuff. You're good at that, right?"
"I-I guess so. I mean, I like organizing and writing..."
"Good," Jack said simply. "Then you do that. And if Yulan tries to start another debate, I'll shut it down."
You blinked. "Just like that?"
He raised an eyebrow. "You want me to not help you?"
"No! I just...I'm not used to people being that direct."
"Guess that's why I'm here," Jack muttered. "Balance."
From then on, Jack didn't just participate in the project - he managed it. Not in the way most people would simply take over, but rather by smoothing out the chaos so that you never had to. If Yulan got too loud, Jack would glare at him until he quieted down. If the Octavinelle student slacked off, Jack growled until he did something useful. And whenever it came time to present your findings to the professor, Jack always, always deferred to you to start the presentation.
"You did most of the writing," He'd shrug. "It's only fair."
You couldn't remember the last time someone had made you feel...capable. Protected, even. But never belittled.
It wasn't just about the project anymore.
Jack started walking with you to class after your meetings. He'd slow his pace to match yours, quietly adjusting his long strides so you didn't feel like you were trying to keep up. When he asked you questions, he actually listened - ears twitching every so often as you spoke, tail swishing thoughtfully behind him.
"You talk quiet," He once said, "But you say smart things."
You flushed all the way to your ears.
Eventually, you even got comfortable enough to sit with him at lunch. Jack didn't talk much, but you didn't feel like you had to either. He liked the silence. He thrived in it. And now, so did you.
"Can I ask you something?" You mumbled one afternoon as you sat underneath a tree, papers spread between you.
Jack nodded.
Why do you go out of your way to help me? I mean, I'm not...strong. Or brave. Not like you."
Jack looked at you for a long moment, then snorted.
"You ever try doing something when your heart's about to leap outta your chest? Walking into a room full of people, talking even when your throat locks up?" He shook his head. "That's strength, too. Just a different kind."
You stared at him.
Jack rolled his eyes. "Don't look at me like I said something poetic."
You laughed. "Sorry. You just surprise me sometimes."
He shrugged. "I like people who are real. You don't put on a front. You just...are."
Your chest swelled with something warm and unsure and a little fluttery.
Maybe group projects weren't all bad.

Author's Note: I've been in a bit of a rut lately, which I was really sad about, because a couple of months ago, I had a really good streak going, and I was churning out fics at a rapid rate. Unfortunately, I just kind of fell off that streak for a while. I'm trying to get back into it, and I also plan on opening commissions soon! Please be on the lookout for more information regarding that, and I hope you enjoyed this fic!

I understand why professors say teamwork is important when justifying group projects, even though I know it’s really about grading less papers. I’m a reasonable person, I get it.
But if you’re an instructor on this app I raise you this: if the project is about teamwork, why isn’t my grade?
I’m being graded on the end result of the project, not the teamwork. Yet no amount of teamwork is going to make that end result strong if there are people in my group who simply don’t care. And no, that isn’t how it works in the real world.
When I worked on group projects professionally, there were things in place to set the team up for success and monitor our work:
- there was usually pre-designated project lead who had leadership skills or a strong background knowledge on the project
- our slack channels usually had a supervisor in them for questions and accountability
- in my non slack work places we had project check ins with a supervisor
-in some cases we had project feedback surveys at the end or halfway through
I’m 33, I have professional and leadership experience, I could do this project by myself in a week and get an A because I’ve done similar work professionally. I also have ocd so “taking over” is something I’ve worked hard to reduce and I’ve learned to balance with “step up step back”.
By not doing all the work for a group of 20 something’s who barely experienced high school, I actually am practicing teamwork and leadership. I’m giving them info and prompts to try to help, but some of them simply don’t care and are hoping someone else will do all the work. Ultimately they can get away with that because my professor is grading us on the quality of our work, not how we got there.
My attempts to get people to meet, the prompts I gave my team to help get conversations going, and the info I provided to them that they didn’t use will not be graded. My professor will never see our discord chat. Instead I’m being graded on the work ethic of others. How is this teaching teamwork? How is this grading team work? How is it actually preparing severely undersocialized students (my classmates missed most of high school due to Covid and it shows) for the workplace?
So if you’re a teacher, professor or instructor who genuinely cares about teaching teamwork and not just grading fewer papers, here are some suggestions:
-designate a project leader: let the team choose and give that person extra credit
-do project check ins, it can just be a quick survey monkey to give people a chance to “tattle” anonymously. You have to actually read them and follow up on issues though.
-mandate that the group chat stays in canvas or that you’re included in the discord chat, that chat itself should be part of the grade based on how much people participated in and lead conversations
-give individual grades. This means not just grading based on the end result but on each persons portion of it. If one person made the whole presentation that’s going to factor more into their grade. If one section of a project is better researched than another that should factor into individual grades.
-TEACH TEAMWORK FIRST: college isn’t about learning by trial and error, we’re typically given material to learn before being graded on an assignment that proves our knowledge of it. So many current students were not taught teamwork or other social skills typically gained in high school because of COVID learning, don’t assume they know how to do things you take for granted. If the project is team based because you feel teamwork is important, the least you can do is give some handouts on communication and planning strategies that are used in real workplaces. It’s unfair to be grading students on something you didn’t teach them / that isn’t a prerequisite for your course. If your course doesn’t have teamwork knowledge as a prerequisite why are you assuming your students know anything about it?

Here’s a little something I kinda wanna write:
A TBOSAS High School AU but different, because it’s still in Panem. When they’re discussing what could be done to make the Games more interesting in class, Sejanus goes a little mad with rage when Clemensia suggests making these poor kids avoxes like being a slave without a tongue is a better fate than the arena and decides to bitterly make a suggestion he knows will never be picked anyway:
Why not prove how “inferior” those district kids are by having them go to the Capitol Academy from the reaping ceremony until the end of the year? That’ll get people invested in the games! Now they know these kids and they get to enjoy watching them die after being forced to be around them for so long! 🙄
Except Gaul actually thinks this is genius, what with her whole “all humans are vicious animals when cornered” philosophy, and what do you know? That year’s tributes have to spend several months in the lion’s den before they’re sent into the arena. They all take this news with varying degrees of disgust and resignation, especially because they still have to spend a few nights in the zoo while the Capitol decides on where to lock them up. In the end the tributes are thrown into a hotel, specifically the part that used to be a safe house during the Dark Days. It’s the lowest quality place to stay in the Capitol that is, actually, a place for humans to stay, but it’s more luxurious than anything the tributes have ever seen before.
Throughout their stay there, the tributes end up bonding with Capitol citizens with various levels of intent. For some, like Pup and Lamina or Persephone and Mizzen or Lysistrata and Jessup, it goes pretty naturally even without the mentorship because of various situations through which they end up coming into contact. For some, like Bobbin and Panlo and Brandy and Coral, it flat out doesn’t happen. For some like Sejanus and Marcus, it’s a rocky road to a happy ending.
For others like Treech and Vipsania, it’s absolutely hilarious. Not to them, but to the other tributes + Sejanus.
See, despite the Capitol’s disbelief, some tributes actually scored higher than their own age bracket in the school curriculum and got placed in higher classes under the assumption that it was a fluke and they’ll fail out eventually. A good example would be Teslee and Circ on everything tech and Otto and Ginnee on everything mechanical. Treech scored exceptionally high on both history and literature because A) he needed to know a lot of those stories for wood-carving and B) he’s a sneaky bitch who’s broken into the peacekeeper barracks and stole their books on too many occasions to count. He learned those stories to tell the younger kids when he ran out of folklore to entertain the exceptionally story-hungry ones with. Therefore, his 15-year-old self is stuck in the mentors’ class of 18-19yo people. Sadly for him, literature ends up having a big year-long duo project where you have to read and analyze several books together for practice and, at the end of the year, put together a presentation on anything literature analysis related together.
Treech gets stuck with Vipsania.
Everyone in that class feels terrible for her because they’re all convinced he can’t even read, partially because when people make ‘jokes’ about that he doesn’t bother correcting them. He just shares an exasperated look with Sejanus and moves on, because Sejanus knows Treech can read and write due to his wood carving job (he works two jobs bless his soul) and they can bitch about these people after class when Treech doesn’t risk these fragile ego having assholes to get him executed. The thing is though- Treech is actually amazing at writing stories, and that translates to him being very good at writing papers and analyzing stories for someone who’s never done so in an education setting. Vipsania won’t give him a chance though, and keeps belittling him and condescending to him until he snaps and suggests they make their papers separately so he won’t “drag her grade down” outside of the final presentation. She agrees.
At some point, Treech is called into Dean Highbottom’s office during a biology class (he’s with students his age and even made a friend!! Who’s currently helping him catch up on all the education he missed) for a bit and comes back into class looking both pissed off and pleased with himself. The next literature class the grades are announced and the professor looks pale as he announces the highest grade in the class belonging to Vipsania Sickle and Treech Meran, with their shared average of 9.2. People congratulate Vipsania, only for the professor to announce her grade to be an 8.6, the third highest grade in the class. The person with highest individual grade in the class is Treech, who’s leaning his head against his hand and staring out the window in boredom as the students stare at him in shock.
A 9.8, the highest grade in the entire year.
When people suggest there must be a mistake, the professor shakily admits they verified it’s his handwriting and he repeated enough points from the paper that they can only accept he wrote it until there’s tangible proof to claim the opposite, which there isn’t. After that, Vipsania takes some time to simmer in her anger at being outdone by some lesser creature, only to be forced to accept he beat her fair and square in a way where she couldn’t claim credit. So instead she decides she can suck it up and work with him for the project. Except now she’s genuinely interacting with him, and that leads to her to stop despising him. When he complains PE is boring and he misses some of the physical exercise he got back in 7 (especially with his theater troupe), Vipsania ends up convincing her aunt to let him into the gymnasium. Which ends with him joining the track team (because in his words: “gymnastics is for the theater, sprinting is for always”).
And somewhere down the line they go from begrudging project partners to sort of friends maybe, even though Treech still kinda hates her guts for being a prejudiced bitch to him.
The other tributes and Sejanus just adore seeing Capitol dicks be put in their place, and Treech gets to do it in literature, history, and track. Treech is a little less amused because his talking time with his bio buddy was cut short so the Academy could have him write random sentences on paper for 20 minutes until the lit professor was finally forced to accept he wrote that paper.
Either way, a lot of the tributes get Capitol friends who really don’t like the idea of watching them die actually, so of course having the entire youth and even some respected Capitol professors protesting the games puts enough pressure on the academy board to force even the anti-district assholes to agree to put the tributes under Academy protection. No games for Gaul!! No job for Gaul either, she gets fired for unspecified “misconduct”.
She tried to go after Treech and Lucy Gray for becoming so popular with the students, so Agrippina, the literature professor, history professor and art/music professor banded together to stop her because those two are their favorite students. They produce good, creative work that’s actually fun to grade and they need some good projects to stay sane.

Group Project Roles (feat. iliad gang)
Cassandra: KNOWS that people won’t listen to them; then people don’t listen to them and everything goes to crap
Achilles: acts and is uninterested, until a day before the presentation, then gets f***ing PISSED when they go thru the slideshow and everyone has used different fonts; has an aristeia of changing things to actually look good; probably loses a friendship and accidentally deletes a jpeg or two along the way; no one’s particularly happy with them after, but they do agree that it does look better and more profesh
Odysseus: the one that quietly assigns roles and sections and then does most of the research for all of them anyway; but also if anyone asks how the project is going, they roll their eyes and loudly declare that theyre the only one doing any work; somehow both humble and smart, and also an arse about it, but still likeable because, yeah, they did do most of the work
Aeneas: the teachers pet that starts off strong but after they start researching they decide their topic is too hard for them and abandon it; no one hears from them until day before; then they are the one to actually present the project and get the whole thing mixed up, but still somehow come out with the same conclusion; the teacher still loves them but the student who’s not in the group but is actually paying attention to the material loudly objects to the whole thing and the Odysseus has to pipe up and explain where the Aeneas went wrong while not dissing them
Helen: when roles were assigned, they partnered up with a friend, but by the end, it looks like the slide of another person is the one they actually worked on, but then no ones really sure which part they did— if they actually did any of it; they never offer an explanation or stand up for which work they contributed (lends to the -if any- theory)
Penelope: didn’t specifically have a role, kind of just the overseer/narrator (then let Aeneus present it because theyre nice and not as performative); after the Achilles person went through and had their font-changing aristeia, they are the one that goes and smooths things back out and makes sure there aren’t any slides missing or out of place
Agamemnon: real gung ho, but no one actually knows what (if anything) they did; except everyone’s pretty sure that theyre the one that made the title slide font Comic Sans to begin with, probably prompting… you know…
Paris: the one that jumped up and said they would present it way at the beginning of the process, but then they got sick and couldn’t do it so Penelope and Aeneas were the next choices (they also didn’t do any research but did contribute pixelated background pictures for a couple of slides)
feel free to add more!!!

Does anyone want to play Artist Telestrations with me?
What you do (for anyone who doesn’t know) is the Host (me in this case) goes and takes a photo, or finds one or something, and then redraws it in their style. And then I send it to whoever we decide is next in line to redraw my version of the picture!
It’s a long term project that can be played over any private messaging system that both you and the person ahead of you knows about. You can take as long as you want to draw it and make it however detailed you like. Anyone can opt out at any time as long as they tell the person before them and me so that I can edit the list and they can look and see who’s ahead of them now. Anyone can opt in before it ends (I will put them at the end of the list.) I’m not really concerned about too many people joining.
Due to the power of stylization and any artistic license you need to take, the picture might not even be about the same subject by the end. Every time you finish a picture, you also send it to me so I can make a big post with all of the versions there to let us see the progress.
Comment to tell me if you wanna join!
Tagging all of my friends just in case.
