If mash hadn't given exact dates for certain things, then doubled back on those dates by years, by seasons, both of the show and of time (seasons like spring, summer), then I don't think the mash time loop theory would hold as much credence as it does. But as they did commit the mistake of giving specific dates to times, they fall into the time loop even more easily. The very nature of the show adds to it in the first place. The things they say, about have we been here before? Cue laughtrack. It makes it relatively simple to say yeah this is a time loop. There's more of course, the intrinsic cyclical nature of sitcoms/dramedies and eternal recurrence when it goes on along as mash, as an explanation for the consistent inconstancies in the timeline. And of adaptations being timeloops, having been a book then movie then show, this really has happened many times before. And there's also something to be said for the characters, and how they act about it and how this has happened before. How that is part of the war, it being repetitive and consistently purgatorial, it feeling as though they are stuck with no escape day in and day out, the same surgical theater, the same dirt ground, the same olive drab. It feels like a time loop to them, in not a real sense, but a metaphysical one. So they break up the monotonous horror with whatever they can. Much like how a person would act in a time loop, doing something anything they can to change the outcome they know will always occur. But maybe this time, they'll get out of it.

⤹ OO4 〃 -- if we don't meet each other in hotel rooms, we leave notes in napkins, receipts and on notepads to check in with each other

⤹ OO5 〃 -- additionally, we leave prose and poetry and letters on receipts and tissues in restaurants we go to. we pass them along the table. a fan got one of the ones on a receipt and posted it on social media

Typography Tuesday

This week, a little bit of Gothic with The Gothic Script of the Middle Ages by H. C. Schulz, printed in San Francisco by the Grabhorn Press in an edition of 71 copies for the publisher and first bibliographer of the Grabhorn Press David Magee in 1939. The type used is Fred Goudy's Deepdene Text, a blackletter typeface designed in the early 1930s to complement his humanist Deepdene typeface designed earlier. The two typefaces are not otherwise related in style. The book is printed in red, black, and blue, with a lovely gold-leaf initial T in the opening text.

This volume is a "leaf book": a book with content centered on the content of another book, or type of book, with a sample leaf from that other book included in the volume. In this case, a leaf from a late 14th-century manuscript Collectar is included in the publication. We don't know who H. C. Schulz is, but judging from the several other leaf books he produced with the Grabhorn Press, he must have been a collector and authority on manuscript books. Unfortunately, he also seems to have been a breaker of books, or at best a collector of broken books, which in turn encourages the breaking of books.

Schulz describes the leaf included here as made "probably in Northern France" and that "The writing is a very bold Gothic script in the best liturgical tradition, and a contrast to its heaviness is given by the fine pen ornamentation of the initials." Our copy of The Gothic Script of the Middle Ages is part of a gift from the estate of our dear friend Dennis Bayuzick.

But to answer your questions!

1. Script has Ice, Fire, and classic Bone magic. He can teleport, regenerate, slow time (3-5 seconds), and come back from the dead. He also can transform into something I call a Void Beast. Practiscally a angry doomsday beast made entirely of Void goop. (Note the last few abilities are only available to him when his symbiote is in his body. Otherwise he can’t safely use them.)

2. Broken? Nah, try nonexistent. He destroyed the multiverse he came from single-handedly before wandering through the void for a hundred years and ended up in the UTMV. His multiverse was more of a cousin to the UTMV. Vaugely similar, but with some noticable differences.

3. And yes! Though, he wouldn’t go out of his way to make them. If you stumble upon him and you’re chill, he’s chill. Bro is an old man that just wants to sit around in the quiet all day.
