Aahp (8) - Their sweet angel
Summary: You end up being their sweet angel.
Pairing: Mobster!Andy Barber x fem!Reader, Mobster!Nick Fowler x fem!Reader, Mobster!Steve Rogers x fem!Reader, Mobster!Bucky Barnes x fem!Reader
Characters: Jake Jensen, Lloyd Hansen
Warnings: angst, mentions of character’s death, mafia business, Lloyd being Lloyd, flirty Lloyd, fluff, implied future polyamory
Angel and her protectors masterlist
Catch up here: Aahp (7) - Fooled
“Down he went. Down he goes. Down with the evil king,” Lloyd sing-songs as Jake shows them the footage of Alexander Pierce’s downfall. “I told you we are going to bring that asshole down too, Jakie pie.”
“Stop calling me that,” Jake grunts. Lloyd loves to give people nicknames, and the hacker can’t stand it. “I’m not one of your boy toys.”
Lloyd winks at Jake, “You wish you were, Jakie pie. All of you wish to have Lloyd Hansen’s attention. If you want to go for a ride, I got lots of lube in my luggage.”
“Lloyd, stop hitting on our hacker,” Andy tuts as he watches Alexander Pierce fall to his knees, begging for his pitiful life. His enemies know no mercy. They execute him, ending his life with a bullet to his brain.
“He’s too cute to ignore,” Lloyd teases. “Jakie boy, do you want to come home with me? I’ll be good to you, Jakie pie.”
“What are you doing here?” Nick angrily mutters. “Stop being so loud. Y/N finally fell asleep. Ransom’s death agitated her. He was the worst to her, but she loved him not so long ago.”
“Aw, the princess needs her sleep, and the white knight comes to her rescue,” Lloyd cackles. He loves to mess with everyone around him. “Did she already let you play hide the salami or, does she still not let you get some?”
“Final warning!” Nick is in Lloyd’s face. He grabs him by the throat to slam Lloyd into the wall. “You will stop making stupid comments about Pookie, or I’ll end you, here and now.”
“Nick, calm the fuck down. We don’t have time to clean up your mess.” Bucky drags his brother off Lloyd. “We still need his help. Who knows how many enemies are waiting for us to fall.”
“Pierce and Drysdale are out of the picture. This doesn’t mean their former allies won’t go after us. There’s no guarantee they’ll never find out that we are behind Pierce’s and Drysdale’s downfall,” Andy tries to stop Nick, Bucky, and Lloyd from getting into a fight. “Steve is talking to Fury now.”
“Good,” Nick grunts as he turns to leave. “Keep the volume low. We are all happy Piece bit the dust, but Y/N needs her sleep. She had a rough week, or rather months, filled with fear and uncertainty. I try to convince her to stay here…with me—ahem…I meant us.”
“Let me handle this,” Bucky offers. He grins, provoking his brother to get a reaction out of him. “I bet she’ll be putty in my hands.”
“You’ll keep your hands to yourself!” Nick points at his brother. “All of you. The last thing Y/N needs is four needy bastards pouncing on her like some animals.”
“A pack!” Bucky exclaims. “How about we feast on her sweet, ripe body like wolves.” He cackles when his brother is about to go ballistic. “Relax, Nick. We won’t harm her. If Y/N decides to stay with us, we can talk about the nature of the relationship she wants with us.”
“Gang bang,” Lloyd throws in. He’s as shameless as ever when he cups his crotch. “If she can’t take all of you, I can help her out. But remember, Jakie pie is mine.”
“Keep your hands and dick to yourself,” Jake snaps at the cocky mercenary. “If I see your dick, you will lose it.”
“I got pictures, Jakie pie. Do you want to see them?”
Andy, Nick, and Bucky leave the room. They don’t want to be part of this conversation any longer.
Nick worriedly watches you sleep on the king-sized bed. He sighs because you didn’t want him to stay with you.
“What are you doing?” Andy hisses, watching Nick, watching you. “We agreed on giving her space and time.”
“Yeah, what are you doing here?” Bucky and Steve ask in unison. It’s their thing. They have been best friends since childhood and always know what the other thinks.
Nick closes his eyes and counts to ten. He only wanted to be alone with you for a moment. No such luck.
“Let’s give her some alone time, and let her sleep.” Andy places his hand on Nick’s shoulder. “I know you like her, but it’s not up to you if she stays or not. Ransom is gone. She’s free to do whatever she wants to.”
Reluctantly, Nick gets up from the bed. He glances at you before turning to leave the room, following the others outside to finally celebrate their victory.
“So………” Nick expectantly looks at you. You were eating your breakfast when Andy asked the most important question you’ll ever answer in your life. “Do you want to stay with…all of us…or one of us…or…”
“Do you want to go back to your life without us,” Bucky jumps in. He stands a little closer to sniff at your hair.
“She will stay with us, right?” Steve asks, but it sounds more like an order to you. “Right, doll? You don’t want to go back to your life. We can give you so much more than orgasms.”
Andy chokes on his coffee. “Steve!” He hisses in his brother’s direction. “Seriously? This is how you want to make her stay?”
“Orgasms…” You repeat. “Are you good at giving a woman orgasm?” You look Steve straight in the eyes. “All of you?”
“What?” Andy splutters.
“I’m just asking for a friend.” You shrug and go back to finish your oatmeal. “You know, a girl can’t live off oatmeal and nice dresses. She needs more from a man…or…” you look at all of them, smirking. “Her men…”
“Pookie, you naughty little vixen!” You squeal when Nick grabs you by your waist to place you on the dining table. “What do you want?”
“I want to be more than a fleeting thought to you. I don’t want to end up alone, and heartbroken again because you found someone prettier, or sexier.”
“We won’t…” Nick silences your worries with his lips, kissing you greedily. “You’re ours now, and we are yours.”
“So—who’s going to eat the cute pie first, and can I join?” Lloyd asks, walking in on you making out with Nick.
“Get out!” Bucky, Nick, Andy, and Steve yell at the mercenary.
“Fine, fine,” Lloyd raises his hands in surrender. “More Lloyd for Jakie pie…”

A-maze-ing!
A/N: Written for @the-slumberparty's December Daze Challenge.
Prompt: this snowmaze seemed fun until i got lost

Okay, this looks familiar, you think. Then again, so did the last four lefts!
Sure enough, there's the exact same snowflake decor on the wall. You swear it's mocking you. You'd rip it to mark your progress, but it's laminated. You also don't have any markers to just make a mark on it.
You're lost. Which means, if you ever want to get out of her, you have to ask Jack to get you out.
Sighing, you pull out your phone and text him.
I'm lost.
I told you you'd get lost.
Will you please come rescue me?
You know the price.
C'mon, Jack! I'm cold and tired!
You know the price.
You stomp your foot and pout. You know what it'll cost for him to come rescue you and you just can't do it! You'll starve to death in the maze before you yield!
Fine. If he won't help you, you'll find someone who will. You switch to another name in your contacts but as soon as you hit "send" your phone gives you a "no signal" message. You blink. That can't be right. You just texted with Jack and you haven't moved from that spot.
You flip back over to your chat with Jack.
DID YOU BLOCK MY PHONE?!
Can't have you cheating. 😉
It's not cheating to ask for help from someone else. That was NOT specified in the rules.
It also wasn't specified that I COULDN'T block you from getting outside help.
When you don't respond for a few minutes, he messages you a photo of him eating a churro, making your stomach growl. Your face scrunches in frustration. You're cold and hungry and lost. Maybe it's best to just give him what he wants.
You have to PROMISE me he'll never know.
No worries. This is just for me.
You close your eyes and sigh before typing:
You are a better hacker than Jake Jensen.
So glad you've finally come around! Take two lefts and one right.
It can't be that easy, you think. But when you follow his instructions, there he is, holding out a churro and smiling.
"You promise you won't tell Jake or show him the text?"
"I promise," Jack nods. "But I'm gonna ride this ego boost through our next encounter with him."
"You're lucky you're cute," you grumble. "And that you got me churros."
"Nah, that's not why I'm lucky," he shakes his head. "I'm lucky because I've got you." He winks, making you giggle.

Strangers In The Night
Strangers In the Night - Jake Jensen/female of non-specified origins*
Warnings: Mostly fluff
Summary:
Jake's had a rough night, and meets an intriguing stranger, who may or may not be supernatural, but is definitely trying to seduce him.
A/N: This is my second Jensen fic, and I have no idea where it came from. I found it on my voice recorder from some random commute home. I don't even remember recording it.
Also, the 'female of non-specified origins' bit is because I'm not sure what she is. Is she Fae? A Succubus? Another kind of demon? A vampire? A wanted international assassin who is stalking the adorable hacker? No clue, honestly, and would love your thoughts on the matter.
Five minutes. A new record really, as far as Tinder match flameouts went. Impressive, even for him.
Jake had matched with the woman on the app, the one he’d joined at his buddy Pooch’s not-so-gentle nudging, and well, it was going as well as a steamroller through a minefield, something with which he had personal experience unfortunately. That is to say: exceptionally poorly. From tip to tail, this whole endeavor had been nothing but a mess, and he was done trying to… do whatever it was his friends wanted him to do. Three strikes, and he was out.
He was fine alone, really. Yeah, it would be nice to have someone to hang out with who truly appreciated his more geeky endeavors, but really, he was good. And semi-regular two-person (or more under the right circumstances) sex would be kinda nice. But he was good. Really. He also figured if he told himself the lie long enough, he’d truly come to believe it.
At least he was at a bar he knew. A boutique hotel, all dark woods and real leather seating, in a nicer part of town, not intimidatingly upscale, but definitely on the nicer side. It wasn’t his neighborhood local, but he’d been there a couple times, enough to trust that the bartender wouldn’t do him wrong. He ordered a whiskey on the rocks, intending to enjoy it before returning to his dark empty house, struck out again.
“How’s that working for you?”
The question made him jump, the sudden appearance of a person on the barstool next to him hadn’t registered until just that moment. It was a hazard in his line of work, for a number of reasons, but somehow he didn’t even sense she was there until she spoke. Looking down into his glass, he was about halfway done, but that didn’t account for her ability to sneak up on him.
She was unexpected, in ways he couldn’t enumerate. Dark hair, brown skin, and large, dark eyes that seemed to shine even in the low light, she was curvy, sexy, in a way he found wholly unsettling. Her voice was softly accented in an unfamiliar way, a little deeper than he expected, but not unkind.
“How’s what working for me?”
“This whole ‘sad puppydog’ thing.” She waved a hand toward him as she tossed off the insult.
That brought his attention fully to her. “Excuse me?”
Her frown was less argumentative than it was dripping in disappointment. “Don’t get me wrong. I mean, you’re into blonde, twinkie things, and that’s fine, I guess. And you are a bit young, so there is that.”
He felt his blood pressure rise the longer the stranger verbally ran him down. “Is she really negging me right now?”
The disappointed look slid into one of fondness. “No, I’m not really negging you.” The laughter in her voice was patently obvious.
Shit. “Was that out loud?”
The stranger nodded with an unconcerned shrug. “Yeah, babe. Yeah, it was. But here’s the point.” He shifted in his chair to face her more directly, curious to see what this unusual woman’s angle was. “There are other choices you could be making. Other more entertaining,” she paused with a thoughtful expression that quickly slid its way into something closer to wickedness, “and certainly more interesting, choices you could be making other than blonde twinkies with a degree in hotel management or marketing.”
“As opposed to…?” he trailed off, his previous anger melting into amusement at the complete absurdity of the interaction. Humoring her in this almost felt like a compulsion at this point.
She reached across the bar to the bowl of nuts and tossed two unerringly into her mouth. “Oh, I don’t know. Graphic design? That’s a step up from marketing.”
He found himself nodding in agreement despite his intent.
“Or maybe a masters in fine arts?’
“No.” He cut off that train of thought decisively. “No art majors. They’re terrifying.”
“They are,” she agreed immediately. Her broad grin reminded him a bit of dealing with the devil, or when Ayesha was in the mood to mess with him. “And yet their blowjobs are outstanding. What can you do?”
Unfortunately, he could attest to both parts of her statement.
The bartender reappeared then with a long-suffering look at Jake and one of teasing admonishment for her. “Stop terrorizing the patrons.”
“‘Terrorizing’? I would never.” and for a moment she was the picture of umbraged innocence with the big eyes and the hand on her ample chest. “I’m just waiting for my martini.” She held up her empty glass as evidence.
Eyes narrowed, the barkeep took her glass. “Uh huh.” To Jake, he held up a warning finger. “This one bites.” He nodded in her direction even as he refilled his drink, likely out of pity. “This one bites,” he repeated like he was an NPC imparting game-necessary information.
The woman’s lip curled as she grimaced at the bartender’s retreating form. “I don’t bite,” she grumbled. “I mean, I only bite those who deserve it. And that was one time.”
The wariness with which he’d started the encounter had returned with reinforcements. “I… I have no reason to believe that’s true at all.”
Instead of backing off or reacting in anger, she just laughed. “And that’s because you’re a discerning man of culture. And quite smart, apparently.”
All of these wild conversational left turns, combined with the whiskey, were throwing him. Nothing she said assuaged the undercurrent of potential danger that seemed to thrum between them. “Who are you, really? And why are you here?”
She shrugged and took her refreshed martini back from the bartender, exchanging cash single-handedly in a way that was too smooth not to be practiced between before. “I watched that whole ‘date’ debacle go down, and I felt terrible.” She sipped her drink, leaving a shimmering drop that only emphasized their fullness before she continued. “Because wasting a man’s fantastic sense of humor on unappreciative foofiness is well, sad. And not okay at all in my book. So, here we are.”
As explanations went, that was certainly a choice. It was a non-answer with all the subtlety of incoming air support. “My… sense of humor?” Of all the things he’d ever been noticed for by women, that one had yet to come up.
“Well yeah. Don’t get me wrong, the arms, the shoulders, the chest, the ass, the face goddess preserve us, all of that is spectacular. Absolutely 10/10, can’t say nicer things.” She took another drink and licked her lips. “I mean, I could, but I would probably get thrown in jail for public indecency, but regardless, my point stands.”
Dealing with this woman reminded him a lot of being at the bottom of a waterfall and being stuck under the water flowing over him. It was hard to catch his breath, but still invigorating to a certain degree even as it drenched him to his soul.
She, however, was in no way done, apparently. “And honestly, if she’s not going to appreciate your sense of humor, she doesn’t deserve the rest of you. Besides, a man who looks like you? Making a quality Monty Python joke? Goddess forfend. Be glad it was just me, and not some of my more …” she paused, clearly carefully curating her phrasing, “indiscreet friends.”
He blinked at that assessment, both flattered and mildly terrified in turns. “I don’t know which part of that upsets me more: that there are more of you, or that there are some that are possibly more forward.”
Her laugh was genuine and joyful to listen to. “Like I said, an exceptionally smart man.” She threw back her drink before turning to face him fully. “Now, as I was saying. There are other choices you could be making.”
“I’m listening.”
Her attention was drawn to the empty glass she twirled deftly between her fingers before muttering, “Fuck it.” Her dark eyes on his, her grin promised nothing but the best kind of sin. “Perhaps we could take this up to my room and I could explain it more fully. Maybe even give you a hands-on demonstration.”
His mouth went dry as he took in the escalation in her brashness. “Are… are you hitting on me?” That was not something that normally happened to him, either out with his friends or by himself. At least, not for the length of time they’d been talking.
“Obliquely,” she conceded immediately. “Do you require something more,” the sharp angle of her canine tooth seemed to glint in the low light of the bar, “pointed?”
A threat of violence? A promise of pleasure? His jaw dropped. “I—I… what?”
She giggled, kicking her feet on the barstool in a way that drew his attention to her steampunk boots. “Oh sweetie, you’re adorable. Truly adorable. In the meantime…”
“In the meantime?” he parroted, clearly overwhelmed by the onslaught of her attentions.
“Was that a ‘yes’ or a ‘no’?”
This was one of those moments, Jake was sure, that may change the direction of his life—for good or bad—with his answer. “I… I’m not sure I should be going anywhere with strangers.”
Her dark chuckle did things to him, sending heat racing down his spine and pooling in his lap. “You’re not that much younger than me.” After a beat, she continued to plead her case. “I’m not gonna steal your virtue.”
He reared back at that, since it was a frequent point of teasing from his teammates. “I don’t know about all that…”
“You don’t?” Her previously mischievous grin morphed into dawning horror. “Tell me you’re not a virgin, please, holy gods.”
“No, no! Of course not!”
Her whole being seemed to melt in relief at that answer. “Oh, thank the gods.”
“Why? Is that a problem?” he asked, his curiosity unwilling to relinquish the reins on this adventure, even as other parts of him were clamoring for a turn at the wheel.
“Oh yeah,” she agreed immediately. “Most assuredly.”
“What’s wrong with being a virgin?”
“Nothing, but for the same reason you learn to ride a bike with training wheels instead of just tearing it up right out of the gate on a BMX, it tends to be a little much for them.” She licked her lips and smirked. “I think overwhelming may be the most accurate phrase there.”
They hadn’t even gotten naked yet, and he already wholeheartedly agreed. “You have to have so much experience to ride this ride.” He snickered at the way her eyes lit up. “Sounds like you might need a waiver.”
“I’ve thought about it, but it kind of ruins the mood.” Her wink practically had him swooning.
“I could see that.” He looked around thoughtfully, a little startled that they were now the only ones in the bar. “A hands-on demonstration, you said?”
“I did.”
“Huh.”
Rather than wait, she slipped down to the floor from the tall seat and left a twenty on the bar as a tip. Looking up at him through her lashes, she was at once innocently alluring and yet wantonly decadent. “So, what’s it gonna be, pretty boy? Yes, or no?”

Silverfox Jake Jenson with a hacker who has been giving him trouble cause shes bored and loves bothering him. Maybe it's a former high school friend and he doesn't know it
“Hack the unhackable,” the click of your keyboard had been the secondary break of silence while you sat in your dorm room, with the first being your friends pausing tone, “you’re going to try and hack Professor Lacey’s friend?”
“Jack the unhackable,” you grinned and turned in your chair, facing her head on, “he claims to be a solidly protected man with an unreachable computer-”
“This guy was in the army, Bee!” Your friend cut you off, raising another concern over your attempt to cure your boredom by targeting Jake Jensen.
The Silverfox guest speaker in your current computers course had been well received by a number of the female students in class. His height was the first check mark for so many of the girls, and then his charming goofiness had only added to it all.
Jake Jensen, ex-army and self-labeled computer genius, had appeared in front of your class to many starry-eyes women who thought it was more than his height and broad shoulders that garnered their attention. Jake Jensen was gorgeous, truly he was, a rightful silverfox if you’d ever seen one.
But it was his perception that he was unhackable that stole your attention. It was the claim that he was the best at keeping others out that made you want to push him.
“Bee, reconsider this.” Your friend plopped onto your bed, playing with one of your pillows. “This army guy…”
“Likes to play games,” you grinned and rolled your shoulders back, admiring the gates shutting before your very eyes, and the challenge that rose from it.
“Y/N-” she attempted again, another chance to turn back before an invitation popped up on your screen.
“Pirate Hat and boxers?” You raised an eyebrow, tilting your head as the random words had shown up on the screen beyond the invitation to some kind of parlay. They were randomly shoved between text and code, files and documents you’d been allowed to weed through however they seemed to be completely irrelevant.
“Blogging! Why can’t you go start blogging? Or steal a billion dollars from Elon Musk?”
“I think…” your smile fell for a moment before it rose again. “I think Jake Jensen wants to meet me. An address and a time-”
“-you can’t be serious?” She scoffed, typing away at her phone before pulling up the name of the building and company residing inside. “Its one of those destruction rooms, you know where you go and smash things up.”
“Admiration and annoyance,” you turned from your computer screen and crossed your arms over your chest, “I’m gonna meet him.”
“Does he even know who you are? This is the first time you’ve hacked him?”
“Third, actually.” You let your computer software run in the background while you spoke to your friend, shrugging softly before you continued to speak. “The first time he shut me out right away, the last time I had managed to rearrange his personalization settings and every time he pressed a certain key an army of animated ducks would dance across his screen-”
“Bee!” She screeched and scolded you with your petname. “You did not-!”
“This time…I got a date invitation.” You grinned and looked over your shoulder. “He has no idea who I am. But soon he will.”

Omg, yeah, I can imagine you’re way deeper into academia than me and definitely have to deal with a lot of difficulties being in a new field
NOOOO NOT ONE BIT. I'm actually still debating on whether to apply for a PhD (tried and failed last year for the lack of publication and preparation--hastily starting in Dec when almost the first round of every school is closing.... you get the gist) because it's the only way to get a job in a uni with my current research field. And now that I'm back here in my home, it's either "listen to my parents" or suffer the continuous accusation of "being short-sighted" when I want a job outside the system. So... still debating but I think I'm going to try HongKong and other PhD position (with scholarship) in Europe this year (since I couldn't afford the tuition and living expenses in UK or US) and if that didn't work, probably gonna be an ielts teacher somewhere lol
but anyways
Crazy Drew’ 😂😂 he did that sort of stuff just because he could
Feels like Crazy Drew is the attention grabber who just HAS to be in the spotlight - doesn't even care about his own reputation and just like "yup focus on me people" XD
Curtis is an absolute sweetheart.
Curtis is THE sweetheart! I hope he gets all the awards and scholarships because he truly deserves it :3 And the academia would def be a better place with more people like him <3 idk whether reader would call him "Dr. Everett" fondly, I also wonder how he'd respond to his friends and family teasingly calling him "Doctor" more than "Curtis" lmao
--also mentioning because I nearly forgot about this after reading the one-shot, Jake Jensen and CS is a perfect match, I can't even think of him studying anything else jksksksksjjksk He's probably the top of his class with a high af IQ (which probably also explains his dorkiness, I haven't met anyone with a high IQ and a high functioning EQ) probably also part of some secret hacker society too. just because he likes fun (and can't get caught XD)
Hi Essie!
I was just reading your post on your application and this is just a thought -- you don't have to respond at all if you don't like this idea!! this idea is purely my CPH4 brain talking I swear I have nothing to do with this lol
So, a young man (okay maybe not so young he was born four years ahead of you according to his page in the uni website ) with some very serious frowning becomes your thesis supervisor at the end of the term. He taught one lesson that you attended and you didn't know him very well besides his name. He rarely speaks, always listening to your presentation/answer, and very occasionally asking "do you have any questions for me?"
Nevertheless, you have impressive GPA and at the end of that term, you decided to apply for a PhD. You already have two letters of recommendation, one from a professor that you have known for two years during your Master's, one from a professor that supervised your Bachelor thesis and teaching a few courses that you attended.
But this damn Graduate School that you want to get in requires THREE. THREE FUCKING RECOMMENDATION LETTERS. And it specifically requires the letter from your dissertation supervisors.
You ask, not with much hope, your current supervisor, the lecturer with a very serious frowning look on his face, whether he could provide you a letter of recommendation.
To which he responded, texting back in a matter of seconds.
-Ofc. When do you need it? Send your transcripts btw.
NOW, the question is: Is he
or
or
----I just thought it'd be hilarious if he's very serious during class and meetings while he's basically any 20-somethings when texting you and discussing things that he shouldn't be sharing with you (like the content of your recommendation letter, or the fact that three recommendation letters is absolutely worthless even though he's providing one for you, or that because another professor is cranky and possibly stealing work from their students, you def shouldn't be choosing him as your doctor supervisor)
Oh I absolutely adore this ask! Thank you so much for sending this in, I unfortunately know the hierarchy of academia too well which is why I honestly think I would be rolling my eyes at these standards, too. I took the prompt and ran with it. 😂
I wanna talk about the other two options before I get to my choice. All below the cut bc it’s long.
Let’s discuss Ari:
Throughout Ari’s undergrad degree, he played football and was greatly interested in world policies, so everyone thought once his sports career and degree was over, he’d be ready to get out there. Nope. He really wasn’t sure where to start, so instead, he decided to keep going with schooling.
His grades were just good enough for him to get into the program you were applying to now. Varsity athletics looked great on the application and his charm was the extra boost. Now that he’s in it though, it’s been almost seven years instead of the usual four to five. Part of it is him going in without much of a plan, wanting to try every avenue, while the other is him just not caring enough to push further and just finish the degree. He’s getting paid just enough to get by and no one has threatened to kick him out, so he enjoys the coasting and the free time it gives for him to look into his actual passions.
Part of the PhD program is all of the grad students sitting in a room grading exams of undergrads every few weeks, and during this, Ari really shows his personality. They have to sit there for hours on end, and it can get boring, so Ari will tell stories to the kid next to him to pass the time, except the room is so quiet that everyone hears. These will range from the various dates with odd girls, to that time he saw a video of someone cooking salmon in the dishwasher, so he tried it out. “It was pretty decent. I swear it’s Kosher! I would do it again if it didn’t take so long.”
Any time he gets trusted to teach, which is rare since his advisor doesn’t really want it in order to guarantee the kids are being taught correct content, questions are not answered very well. It’s either with a “hell if I know. Use google. That’s how they do it in the real world.” Or “wait for the professor to get back. This isn’t my expertise.” Both technically valid, but not what a younger student wants to hear from someone in a position of authority.
Star Student Steve:
Steve was born for upper-level studies. He’s been ready to graduate essentially since getting into the program, knowing exactly what he wanted to research right off the bat. He knows all the content well and is well-liked by students and professors alike. The undergrads have a habit of ogling him and crowding his office hours, so you never even bothered to go. Pending his early graduation, he’s already been offered a job at the university with a full federal research grant, which he could use to travel or gain equipment for his projects. He’s probably considering this, unless one of the prime companies/agencies gives him a better offer. He can’t wait for the opportunity to make new rules and discoveries in the field, just needs to find the best route to get him there. (Talk about a CPH4 brain, haha)
With all of this going on, though, he doesn’t have time for much else. Sure, he’s very kind, but he’s always on the move. Students are not his first priority right now if he wants everything in place to be successful and make history. When it comes to picking an advisor, everyone wants Steve, but after hearing all that, and the standard he might hold you to without giving you the time of day to reach that level, do you really want him?
My wonderful choice Curtis:
(Even before I saw my options, this description was screaming ‘Curtis’ to me.)
He’s definitely the kind of silent student who puts his head down and does his work because it’s difficult stuff. Some may say it’s even more difficult than Steve’s if they knew what Curtis actually did, but he’s so silent and keeps it to himself unless he’s asked. It’s not because he doesn’t want to share, it’s more because when he’s interacting with students, he understands his job is to help them first and foremost. Although Curtis may have been busy, he never rushed and made sure his full attention was on the task or person at hand.
All the Professors know Curtis and really like him for his work ethic and ability to maintain balance and remain a grounded person, except he’s just not a poster boy like Steve. For this reason, his advisor trusts him enough to teach certain classes since Curtis parses out his time well and not only knows the content, but cares about it deeply. At the end of his lectures, though, when he asks for questions, it’s radio silence. Perhaps it’s because he taught the material so well, but even Steve and Ari get the odd question about their research or last Sunday’s football game. Curtis gets disinterested stares until he dismisses everyone. Office hours are pretty quiet, too, until right around exam time when a few students come to him for help since everywhere else was so full. After seeing how helpful he is, yourself included, they keep going back to him, keeping it to themselves, though, keeping him their hidden secret gem.
The lack of recognition Curtis gets is a shame, though, because he’s so nice. Actually, not just nice, but genuinely kind. When you were assigned with him as your advisor, you weren’t really sure what to do. Not many talked about him and the stoic demeanor was a little intimidating, until you actually spoke with each other. He was so sweet and engaged, asking you questions and providing guidance not only on what he thought might work the best, but how to go about it and how to properly convey ideas to the committee panel members at the end. He gave you his phone number, too, in case you needed any help at all, saying he’d pick up anytime.
When you asked him for your letter of recommendation, he was elated. “No one has ever come to me for that before, but ofc. When do you need it? Send your transcripts btw. And your resume.”
Curtis was right, though, he had never had to be the voice of authority vouching on someone’s behalf since up until this point, he was in your exact shoes. “Don’t be nervous to ask questions, but I also don’t want you to think that I’ve got all the answers and you’re not good enough. The only difference between you and me academically is like four classes content-wise. I just have more hands-on experience.” He said it with a soft, reassuring smile that really put you at ease.
He’s aware of the system, and of course he hates it, because he knows what it’s like to be at the bottom. Throughout his time putting together your recommendation, he’s messaging you with updates. “I’m going to add this because they really like to see it specifically highlighted,” or “I’m not even sure what they’re asking here, but it’s fucking stupid if you ask me. Conventions like this are ridiculous. I hate that these decisions are made by people who aren’t even on the ground. If they actually took part in this program, they’d see you’re more than qualified to get into it. But no, for some reason, all important decisions are made by old people so far removed from actual work.”
That second one was in person, though. It wouldn’t look good to have him saying those things in writing. He rolls his eyes before switching back to his reassuring, charming self.
“Anyway, don’t worry. I’ll make sure it’s good.”
And then as he sits down to write, he constantly sends you lines from it. “Does this sound too braggy? Am I hyping up your work too much? I feel like it wouldn’t be fair if I was casual about it, but we’re rocking with a lot of enthusiasm right now and idk where the line is where it’ll seem insincere.😅”
You tend to hang around Curtis a lot while you’re working on finishing up. On small work breaks, he tells you about the weird little things the other PhD students have sent to his email. “I’m what, four years older than you? And so are these other guys, but I swear they act like they’re twelve.” It helps you to laugh at his small little complaints in a time of building stress. He lets you into his life and you see he’s a normal person, just a few years older than you. He’s the whole reason you know about Ari and the dishwasher salmon, and he helps to break down the barriers you feel against everyone in his program that seems to know so much. Half of your conversation is weird everyday things about his life you’re sure no one else has given him the space to talk about. “You texted me while I was watching the hockey game, they were losing anyway so I was grateful to do something else.” He was in the city…at the actual hockey game…drinking a beer and scrolling emails…. Or “my apartment has a no pet policy, but my roommate got a cat, so I hope you don’t mind the little guy joining us today. Just while the landlord does some maintenance so we don’t get kicked out.” He’s half shuffling through the papers on his desk, half giving you an amused smile thinking of the whole situation. Of course, it can’t all be personal, though, so he continues to sprinkle advice in here and there.
“Also, if you wanna keep your sanity around here, keep away from Levinson’s advisor. Not only is he just straight-up a ridiculous man, but he won’t push you if he likes you. And if he hates you, you’ll know it a mile away. That’s why I never chose him for my committee meeting.”
As you prepare to defend your thesis, Curtis is sitting with you in the hallway. He’s been prepping you for this presentation for weeks, but for peace of mind, he asks you potential questions as you wait to be called in. He holds a paper copy of your thesis, saying once again “you’ve got this. Just like the rehearsals. No one knows this stuff better than you. Show them that.” As you stand in front of the small crowd, he gives you a thumbs-up and watches with approving nods as your blow it out of the water.
He gives you a big hug when you pass and an even bigger hug when you stop by the small TA office and visit his desk to tell him about your official spot in the PhD program. “I can’t wait to work together more with you. You’re going to do great things, I know it, and I’m proud to be a part of it.”

Part 5 -- Part 7
Series Masterlist

“So where are we at with identifying the culprit?” Steve’s voice was tight, even over speakerphone.
“Jake’s identified the hacker,” Curtis reported. “But we’re still nowhere closer to finding out what they want or who they’re working for.”
“Has anyone tried contacting the hacker,” Bucky asked from the phone.
“If we did that we could alert their boss,” Mace warned. “That could get Ran killed if we’re not careful.”
You were sitting with Jake, listening to the conversation. Curtis had initially not wanted you to partake but you had to present your case to the Bosses, backed up by Jake’s data. You fidgeted nervously, feeling helpless.
“Jake did manage to get a foothold in hacker’s bugs so we can hear anything that they hear,” Curtis continued. “Is there a way you can call him about something? Maybe get a code phrase from him?”
Everyone heard Bucky curse at that, “the idiot never learned them. Insisted he’d never need them.”
“So,” Steve started, “we’ve got a possible hostage situation where Ransom is being watched closely and he was only able to communicate with Teach?”
“That’s actually a good point,” Mace perked up. “Why did he send those to her? To her apartment, specifically? Why wouldn’t he send, or something similar, to someone in the family? Or even to the cybercafe where he knew she worked?”
“Probably because she’s not in the family,” Bucky pondered aloud. “Anything he sent to us, legitimate side of things or not, would be flagged for suspicion. They don’t know she’s connected to us.”
“Then I can go in,” you blurt out. All heads in the room snapped to look at you. Instead of letting yourself be intimidated, you continued, “I…I could go in under the guise of angrily returning his gifts. I’ll wear something he’ll recognize as acknowledgement of his code…something one of his characters would’ve worn.”
“No,” Curtis barked. “There are too many unknowns here.”
“She might be our best bet,” Steve intervened. “Teach, how will you know if your message is getting across?”
“Well, Jake’s only identified audio trackers, right? What if I were able to write a question or something while yelling at him about the gifts? Maybe even write some cards out beforehand to make it easier?” While Mace and Jake nodded acknowledgement and thought about it, you could feel your confidence withering under the intensity of Curtis’s glare.
“I don’t know what other practical options we have,” Bucky commented.
“NO,” Curtis snarled. “We’re not putting an outsider in danger! She’s not part of the family, she shouldn’t be risking herself like this.” While his words were for everyone else, his eyes never left you. You’d never seen him so worked up before. It gave you an idea as to why his people tended to follow orders over arguing with him.
“We have audio,” Steve interjected. “She can set up some code phrases or words of her own and let us know what’s going on.” Curtis opened his mouth to say something but Steve cut him off, “and if you try saying no again, Curtis, I’ll leave you out of the planning. Especially if you have no better alternatives.” Curtis clenched his jaw, still glaring at you. Part of you wanted to shy away from him, but you needed to show him you could back up your talk so you stayed firm.
“What are some possible things you could fit into a natural conversation to give us updates,” Mace asked you.
“Um…well, if I call him “Mr. Drysdale”, like I always did, it’ll mean everything’s okay. If I call him “Ransom”, it’ll mean there’s something wrong but I can’t identify it. If I call him “Hugh”, I’m telling you I’m in danger, please come get me now. Do you think you can work with that?”
Mace nodded and added, “if there are other people there, complain about working for him for so many years, using the number of years to tell us how many there are.” You nod in understanding.
“I’ll call Destroyer to set her up with a car,” Bucky chimed in. “He’ll make sure it has no identifiers that can mark her as suspicious. Be ready to go in thirty, Teach.”
“Yes, sir,” you reply, just loud enough to make sure he can hear you. You’re still faltering under Curtis’s silent deathglare. You see him twitch at your words and a bit of pain seeping into his eyes.

You pull up into the driveway and put the car in park before taking a deep breath to steady your nerves. Jake, Mace and Hal ran you through a bunch of possible conversation scenarios to help you practice your improv and keep your cool.
Curtis seemed to withdraw, focusing instead on getting you the items you needed. He gathered all of the gifts from your apartment to put in the car. He also picked up the four-leaf clover earrings and the Celtic-shield-knot talisman you needed to convey, in Ransom’s code, that the message had been received. As much as his stares made you uncomfortable before, as you left you wished he’d at least look at you.
You take a deep breath, “no going back,” you tell yourself. You step outside the car and grab the gifts before heading inside. You were too stressed to stand and wait after knocking or ringing the bell so you opt to lean into the energy and slam open the door. You stomp towards Ransom’s office where you see him pacing back and forth.
“Mr. Drysdale,” you scold. Ransom’s head snaps to you, he almost seems relieved.
“Ah, Sweetheart,” he purred, “you got my gifts!” He walks closer to you and you see a piece of paper in his hand.
“Yes, Mr. Drysdale. And I’m here to return them to you. I told you, I’m not going to work for you again.” As you speak you hold out your own pre-written card that asks, “someone’s listening?”
Ransom nods, his body language conflicting with his entreating tone, “oh but Angel, you know how well I treat you! No one makes you come like I do.”
“Mr. Drysdale!” Your eyes flash with irritation but he holds out his hands, placatingly, complete with the note you’d seen earlier.
As you take the note he continues, “come on, Angel. I can pay you more and you can get back to worshiping my cock like you did before. Please! You’ve ruined me for other women with that gorgeous, meaty ass.”
Without thinking you smack him hard across the face, “Mr. Drysdale, you will never speak to me again. If you even think about sending me anything else, I’ll get a restraining order!” You turn around and storm out, the note now in your purse. Ransom takes the opportunity to get some ice on his face, hoping he won’t get yet another bruise.

You return to the car and drive away as fast as you safely can. Your eyes are tearing up so you can’t drive too fast. When you feel you’re a safe distance away, you pull into a parking lot and catch your breath. You open up the note and text a photo of it to Jake. You can barely read it because of the tears that keep falling. You hope it’s a good enough photo before you put the note back in your purse and give yourself a minute to catch your breath.
You’re about to turn the car back on and head back when someone taps on your window. Startled, you turn and see a man with bright blue eyes and a thick mustache smiling at you. You roll down your window just a little so you can hear him.
“Hey there, Sunshine,” he leers at you. “What’s a lady like you doing out here by yourself?”
“If you can’t tell me why you’re bothering me, I’m just going to drive off,” you scowled.
“No need for that,” he assures. “I just figured since you told off your boss, you could use a new man to take care of those needs for you. And you are just my type.”
Your eyes widen at his words and you go to start the car. He flashes his gun at you and you freeze up.
“Careful, there, Pumpkin,” I get that you’ve been through a bad breakup with Ran, but I’ll treat you right. If you behave.”
“Um,” you hesitate, visibly shaking. “Can I…can I text my friends? They’re expecting a message of some kind. I’ll just tell them I’m making up with him so they don’t go looking for me?”
“I get to read the message before you send it.”
“Of course, Mr…”
He smiles, making your stomach churn, “just call me Lloyd, Pumpkin.”
“Yes, Lloyd,” you nod. You grab your phone and type out the message to what you hope is an unrecognizable number, before showing it to him.
“Making up with Hugh,” he reads aloud. “Succinct and efficient. I like your style. Go ahead and send it, then come on out of that car and let me show you a great time.”
You hit send and put the phone in your purse, making sure to carry the purse with you as you step out and he leads you to his own vehicle.
