I promise not to make this a habit, but this is a song you have to experience blind. On my first listen through this song caught me incredibly off guard, but it's easily my favorite from Disc 2. The original song is one of my favorite Metroid songs - if not one of my favorite pieces of VGM, period, and one that I have strong feelings about not making it into Super Smash Bros.

Pyro Paper Planes is a frequent contributor to the first two Harmony of a Hunter albums, with a wide range of styles that they nonetheless sink into perfectly (one of their remixes is the best cover of the SR388 theme on the internet, no competition.) This remix pulls the pathos out of the original song beautifully despite being a very different style than the original. I can't say more than that. Just listen to this one and take my word for it that it will make you cry.

It’s been so long since I’ve done a full drawing that I feel useless 😭

So I grabbed the first idea that came to mind and started sketching it out. I'm going to get back to practicing backgrounds + lighting.

Sorry if the characters look weird or not very accurate — honestly, the only thing I care about in this drawing is the lighting 💔 I’ll add more details later during the render phase.

Track #10: Ashes to Ashes

The theme that plays in Ridley's lair in Super Metroid is a thundering march with a pounding beat that carries along low brass blasts and a threatening vocal chorus in an appropriately intimidating way for the buildup to a climactic showdown. In remixing it for "Ashes to Ashes", artist zircon keeps the intensity but radically shakes up the melody and instruments, resulting in this remix that would fit in perfectly at a rave. An erratic growing bass pumps through the whole song while a chime-like synth plays the melody, with plenty of variation as it goes along. Just past the midway point, the remix mixes things up by incorporating the melody of Red Brinstar before launching into a final intense dubstep section. The bass drops out and the chimes peal away into serenity at the end.

First, the things I like. This is another well-produced song, and it's a clever twist on the intensity of the original song. Despite the high energy throughout, the ending smoothly transitions into the next (extremely low-key) song. The first two Harmony of a Hunter albums have some fantastic transitions between tracks (for example, "Earthroot" opens on the ending ambience of "Danger in Old Tourian", and in turn ends in a way that naturally opens into the burbling water of "Bioluminescence".) It makes for a very satisfying listening experience when listening to the albums all together.

Now, I promise this will be the last time I say this, but there are some techno(?) tracks on this album that very strongly date it to 2011. This is one of them. While the intensity is there, the song undercuts much of it to my ears by delegating the powerful main melody to a very soft chime instrument. I'm not big on the key change either, and the choice to include Lower Brinstar is inexplicable, as it doesn't really emphasize a major tone shift or fit with the original song. So once again, this song is not really for me.

The run of the three songs from "Leader's Lair" to "Ashes to Ashes" is, to me, a slump in the album. But in the grand scheme of things, three songs is not that many, and they are all good. The next few songs, though, hit some truly dramatic highs, starting with a gorgeous remix of a beloved classic, "Kraid's Campfire Ballad."
