There is a notable difference in how Clown interacts with Ros compared to other members of The Realm. With others he acts very aloof and distant. He's friendly and polite but he tends to speak very vaguely and seems to take any chance to say something intentionally violent and off-putting. He seems content to keep people nervous and questioning whether or not he is threatening them. He has a reputation for being dangerous and he allows it to fester even if he doesn't have intentions of actually doing anything. He actively encourages people to be wary of him and often takes opportunities to show off what he is capable of to remind them that he is a threat. I'd say he enjoys making people scared of him. And then you compare that to any conversation he has with Ros and there is a stark difference. You can literally hear it in Clown's tone of voice. He tends to speak quieter and more softly when speaking to Ros because Ros is jumpy and easily startled. Whenever he does spook her, he apologizes and reassures her. He doesn't seem to want Ros to be afraid of him. Even with Sneeg, who I'd argue is his second closest relationship on the server, he'll make jokes about killing Sneeg but he avoids those jokes with Ros. He'll still make comments about violence and killing with Ros but they're never directed at Ros. It seems important to him that Ros never doubts that he wouldn't harm her. And for as jumpy as Ros is, she never does. She has never questioned if Clown would intentionally harm her. She even said when they were training that she wouldn't blame Clown if he accidentally took her last life. Clown seemed uncomfortable with how okay she was with the prospect of him causing her death and later said it would be sad if he ever did kill her.

It's just interesting for a guy who leans so heavily on his reputation for being scary, he goes out of his way to be as nonthreatening to Ros as possible. And it works, Ros has never felt threatened by Clown. She spent 8 hours training with Clown and allowing herself to be attacked by him over and over again and never once worried that he would go too far and kill her. She had complete and utter faith in him. Clown is open about his bloodlust and love of killing but I don't think the thought has ever occurred to Ros that it would ever be turned against her. I think that's very intentional on Clown's part. It would be very easy for him to do fake-outs where he pretends like he's going to kill Ros like he does with others (he frequently chased his own faction member, Tango, around just to watch him panic) but he doesn't. During that training Ros only got low on health by forgetting to eat and never Clown's actions. The absence of that behavior shown with Tango and others feels intentional. He simply doesn't seem to want Ros to be afraid of him like he encourages with others.

Lore time!

Even though the Capitol is endlessly obsessed with the idea of pure bloodlines and impeccable pedigrees, the exact dog breed isn’t always what matters most. What truly counts is that you come from a long, traceable line of Capitol-bred stock. Capitol breeds with Capitol—that’s the unspoken rule. While it’s especially prized (and earns you a certain reverence) if you’re of the same breed as your lineage, it’s not absolutely necessary. As long as your ancestry is pure and untouched by district blood, you’re considered acceptable—though the more uniform your breed, the more you’re admired, almost idolized.

Not everyone fits neatly into that ideal. Coriolanus for instance is not purely bred. He is a blend: his mother was a Sylkie and his father a Borzoi. Though he takes after his father in appearance, the mix in his bloodline set him apart. To the untrained eye, he passes for a Borzoi, but to Capitol society—so sharp in its scrutiny, he’s flawed. To look the part, he’d need to trim his coat down, refine it to match the sleek standards of the Borzoi elite. He never did tho.

But no grooming could hide the truth from those who cared to look. In his childhood Livia bullied him for not being a “real” Borzoi. His mixed heritage became something to mock, which fueled his insecurity even if he doesn’t let it show. Livia is just a spiteful bitch, quite literally-

Meanwhile Sejanus faced a different kind of exclusion. Though part purebred on his fathers side, the other half of him is what the Capitol dismissively labels as wild—something untamed, closer to an animal than a refined breed. His outsider status is rooted not just in his origin, but in his convictions. He knows he doesn’t belong in the Capitol and what’s more, he doesn’t want to. He refuses to play the game or mask who he is.

His tall, wolfish build only adds to the unease others feel around him. People aren’t quite sure what he is, and that uncertainty breeds fear. His presence demands attention, but never comfort. What he doesn’t realize is that even in District 12 that feeling of not belonging won’t disappear. If anything it will follow him, echo louder. There too, he’s neither fully wolf nor dog, neither Capitol nor District. Just a peacekeeper—hovering in the in-between, always marked as other.

Mutts are more common in the districts between canines, doesn’t mean they don’t fear or beware of ‘wild animals’ like coyotes, wolves and foxes 🦊

So I work with animals as a day job and I’m constantly in and out of the vets from day to day and because of this job I know a lot about canine behaviour as well as y’know the basic medical knowledge that’s involved with all that.

All that to say that having that specific niche of education makes Scott McCall so fucking funny to me bc if he has the same training I had (which he should’ve gotten bc otherwise there is NO way Deaton would let him help out with clients like he does in the show), I know for a fact that this boy - after finding out that he was a werewolf - IMMEDIATELY went over the unvaxxed animal/stray dog protocol on himself.

Like I can’t get the image out of my head where like every year Scott drags everyone to Deaton’s office to get their rabies, lepto, distemper, flea/tick/worms treatment, etc.

When Melissa found out Scott probably sighed in relief like, “omg mom this is actually great, could you and all of my still human friends actually get your vaccines just in case?” And Melissa was like “holy shit kid WAY ahead of you.”

Half the werewolves are probably confused even after so long bc they heal right? They are basically immune to a lot of stuff that would harm a typical person or canine, but Scott still insists bc he’s not taking chances goddamnit.

I haven't seen anyone mention it but I'm pretty sure Clown was fully about to try and kill Bad yesterday when he couldn't kill Pili. Pili was refusing to go near Clown when his armor broke so he sent Bad to deliver Clown his gift of chocolate milk. When Bad was with him, Clown added Ros to the VC and immediately asked her if Bad had been directly involved with her death. Ros confirmed that Bad had only watched and did not participate in killing her but I feel the implication is that Clown would have started swinging if Ros had said he was involved. Bro wanted blood I'm pretty sure

okay so Price/Ghost one shot where Ghost is a tow-truck driver and Price is a cop, and Ghost sees Price parked in a fire lane while he's inside a store buying cigarettes or a coffee and tows his ass, and Price has to walk all the way to the impound lot just steaming mad, where he meets this huge, scarred-up ex-military tow truck driver who isn't the least bit intimidated by him. But Price tries to throw his badge around a little, so Ghost (ornery motherfucker that he is) decides to teach him a lesson personally, and makes it his life's mission to catch Price parked illegally and tow first his squad car, and then later on his personal vehicle. Price tries to catch Ghost doing things he could arrest him for but Simon is the most boring man on the planet, he works, goes home, drinks one beer, sleeps, rinse repeat ad infinitum. So Price arrests Johnny for something bullshit instead (Ghost only has one friend and no family), and Ghost has to go down to the precinct to bail him out. Price starts leaving Gaz in the vehicle to stop Ghost from towing him, but he tows it with Gaz inside as retaliation for the Johnny arrest.

Culminating in them having an altercation when Price finally catches Ghost hooking up his car, and after a few punches are thrown they probably end up on the ground making out sloppy style.

Is this anything? I feel like this is something.

appreciation post for Lise Mayer!! she co-wrote The Young Ones (and The Bachelor Boys book, additional material like when they did Comic Relief, etc), which is well known. but she also wrote for other things in the alternative comedy scene like Rik Mayall and Ben Elton's comedy tour (source: BBC Breakfast Time interview)! and, something I didn't know until recently: she co-wrote/wrote for Kevin Turvey! she's not credited in his television appearances, but see below for sources.

i really loved the podcast episode she did with Alexei Sayle about TYO, you gain a lot of insight into her perspective! she also mentions misogynistic treatment like being asked to go make tea when they were doing script readings, not getting invited to a big BBC party because it was presumed she'd be Rik's plus-one, and getting groped at the BBC bar. it pissed me off on her behalf and partly prompted this post.

some specific accolades/accreditation/fun facts:

i feel like it's easy for people to overlook or minimize Lise's impact, something that happens to female creators far too often. i hate when women's identities are framed around their association to a man-girlfriend to Rik in this case-which was the norm whenever i saw Lise discussed in articles/books/online discussions about TYO. it's important to know she was a writer and co-creator with her own identity and (underappreciated) contributions. The Young Ones (and Kevin Turvey, and things we don't even know she goes uncredited for) would not have been the same—or wouldn't have even existed—without her!
