Just spitballing misc. Machigai stuff over here don't mind me (might draw them sometime, just wanna have them written down for now lol)

I finished writing all this and jeebus how do I have all of this permanently in my head

- Machigai is a big Hatsune Miku and Vocaloid enthusiast. He bought the voicebank when it first released but he has absolutley zero musical talent and is tonedeaf so it just chilled on his shelf as a collectible. Ask him about Vocaloid and you get slapped with what is essentially a wikipedia article but even more in depth.

- despite his lack of musical talent, he is a beast at rythm games. You know those people who all perfect(or the project diva equivalent) intense voice of hatsune miku on the highest difficulty? Yeah, that's him.

- because of his unique biology, he has some pretty interesting regeneration. Any wound that could cause blood loss is automatically healed until it's no longer a risk, the rest happens similar to how a wound would heal on a normal human. Machigai can consciously speed it up but it takes a lot of energy. Though any scar fades in a few days, even when it would leave a permanent mark on a human.

If the wound was inflicted with magic (or whatever the fuck is deadly to vampires) he doesn't die, but the wound takes a lot longer to heal and it leaves a permanent mark.

He can't die from bloodloss or anything really, he'd just pass out until enough blood is retaken from the wound or he gets more blood externally. He does experience all the pain so yeouch

- has many many scars from his days as a lab rat to the Hyakuya Sect. Mostly around his torso and shoulders, though he has a few on his legs as well. While he isn't self consious about them, he doesn't like showing them and would rather just not look at them since they are reminders of a very shitty time in his life

- his cursed gear let's him generally boost his physical abilities while hiding his presence, such as making his footsteps a lot quieter and erasing him from someones periferial view. His demon, his piece of shit mother, is very limited in her actions as he deliberatley shut her out from his 'true self' and only lets her get the tiniest peek at his desires when actually needed.

Using these abilities does take a lot of energy and a toll on his body. Were he to overuse it, it would completley destroy his sense of self since his vampire side is very vulnerable to such magic/curse/idk. Rule of thumb, if you see a demonic looking horn growing on him, knock him out real fast.

- Machigai has no sleep schedule, tho he pretended to have one in the beginning so he could fuck off from work early. He got 'busted' (as in he grew to like Crowley's, Chess' and Horn's company enough to relax around them a bit and not leave at 11pm sharp) later on

- speaking of sleeping, he can't really sleep well. Plagued by frequent nightmares, he often just stays awake as long as possible until he physically can't stay awake and just collapses at the closest opportunity. Despite the misery he goes through, this does get him a full 8 hours of deep sleep.

-> After repeating this process a lot of times, Chess finally asks him why he's so tired all the time. He reluctantly opens up about it and she has the brilliant idea for everyone to cuddle him since cuddling helps with sleep! Crowley and Horn agree too so, too late, Machigai is now forced to accept his fate.

They end up smooshed together in Machigai's bed, which was infact not made for multiple people, Crowley is spooning Machigai from behind, Chess is tucked under his chin and Horn is spooning Chess. (Platonic cuddling my beloved)

Machigai did end up getting a good nights sleep and after that his nightmares became less frequent for a while :)

- he sometimes sheepishly asks Crowley to cuddle him if he can't sleep at all or Crowley is just like "You look like you could use some cuddles to fall asleep. Come here"

- He has a major sweetooth (he isn't picky about his sweets)

- similar to sweets, he isn't picky about blood either, though he preffers the blood of adults

- drinking blood directly from the source is another thing however. Since he's partially human and grew up in human society, biting someone and drinking their blood directly has a lot of implications for him.

Firstly, he sees it as a very intimate, if not borderline erotic, act. Especially around the neck (it is an erogenous zone after all). Unless your name is Crowley Eusford, his neck is strictly off limits.

Since 2/4 of his other most trusted people are also vampires, he lets them bite his arm when the situation arises. Technically Yua and Homura could bite his arm too when asked but it wouldn't really serve a purpose. Oh well. Friendly (consensual!) nibbles are pretty neat.

Anyone else can go fuck themselves

- When he's the one drinking blood he keeps it low key and bites the arm at most. He absolutley refuses to directly drink from anyone under 18 but he just generally isn't a fan of it. And then it's only from the 5 people he actually likes. (Once again, unless it's Crowley then there are exceptions but. uh. I don't wanna bring this in the nsfw teritorry for now lol)

- he is a GamerTM, tho thanks to the catastrophe he can't really play much. He did find a mostly intact Nintendo DS and painstakingly fixed it up but he still hasn't found any games for it. He is very upset about that

This is a serious PSA right here:

If you use AI programs that involve singing or TTS. DO NOT USE VOICES THAT USE PEOPLE YOU DO NOT HAVE PERMISSION TO USE IT FOR.

TL;DR: Do not use user-generated AI Voices if the original VA did NOT give permission. It is extremely harmful and disgusting, these Voice Actors are real people and imagine if you had your voice singing about objectively weird subject material.

I do not care if you just wanna fun. I do not care if you just want to do something at all. If you don't have their permission, do not use it.

Why am I making such a big deal out of this? Because currently a high profile Voice Actress, Erica Lindbeck, has resorted to deleting all social media due to one of these AI covers. While not solely due to it, the harassment she has received over this has seemed to made her so uncomfortable and or plain turned off, she just decided to not even try.

You may ask, if it was just the harassment why does the cover part matter? Because she was also, if not obvious, disturbed that her voice was being forced to sing an inappropriate song, again using her own voice. Additionally, you may be asking "But why does it actually matter?" and here is the answer:

Vocal Synthesis especially in singing and TTS has been founded in consent. While I am not very confident about TTS history, Vocal Synthesis, which is usually the act, in context of fandom, technology that is usually sample-based or generative using a Voice Actor. A form of this very familiar to the online zeitgeist is Hatsune Miku, a Vocaloid. Vocaloid is a once formed concatenative(A form of using samples to be able to be synthesized that combines consonants and vowels separately) Vocal Synth created by Yamaha Corporation. However, from its inception, this method requires consent from a Voice Actor to produce. The process cannot even start without this.

This process has been carried with every single current professional Voice Synth. Additionally, it has been a rule for most TTS, or speaking synthesizer products. And if you really don't know, you might be asking why? The answer is simple, if there wasn't consent well, lawsuits galore would be had and rightfully so. But also, it is so morally dark. With these and any program that uses these methods, users can make the voice say anything, including racist, homophobic, highly sexual and other sorts of possibly disgusting content.

Let me say, if you don't think you still see the issue let me explain. While I understand it can be hard to view Voice Actors are not their characters or really as people like me and you. Just imagine if someone did this to you. Yes, possibly a random person. They take your voice and are able to make you sing anything. While most likely they wouldn't make you sing something offensive, they could. But even then they did this intentionally by taking your voice. Would that not make you uncomfortable as fuck? Would you not feel uneasy? This is how these singers or voice actors actually feel because it is their reality. Most of these people don't live lavish lives, they just get payed to talk in a microphone and they get by. They're not out-of-touch celebrities(usually).

This is to say, they're not special. Inherently, they don't have super-strength. They see the world like you. Why do I emphasize this? Because it could and should put into perspective their fear and overall feelings are justified. On-top of all this, all of it and potentially career-ruining stuff. Do you see how video game companies are using AI to make stuff? Once they figure this out there will be a push to do similar stuff. They want to be able to just live their lives. And no, your AI cover will not be the reason their career fails or they stop making money. But if a Voice Actor tells you to delete your cover, fucking do it. They literally just want to not see their voice be misused and their entire being disrespected.

If you want to make AI covers, that's ok. There are ways to do this in other ways. Those Synths I mentioned earlier like Vocaloid, have AI Voicebanks that can produce a similar result. Others like Synthesizer V are free and you can use lower quality versions of full AI Voicebanks for FREE and FOREVER. You can even make your own voice sing with programs like Enunu or NNSVS or use other very good singers that gave their voice for you to use with consent.

So in conclusion, please understand where I am coming from. You are not inherently a terrible person for making these covers, listening to them or anything. It is only when you knowingly disrespect a Voice Actor when it becomes too far. But you still shouldn't use them or make them, in this form. Thanks!

VOCALOID LEGENDS - 2012 Part 4

#116 - Snow White Princess Is (Noboru-P) [Hatsune Miku]

Achievement Date: 12-10-21, Upload Date: 10-02-22

Most famous song from Noboru-P and you can see why, the melody is one of the most memorable melodies in VOCALOID (although there’s a lot, I know). Apparently, the whole thing is a metaphor for a girl with a jealous mother who poisons her? Jeez, I didn’t know the song is so dark. That’s what you get in a VOCALOID song, I guess.

#117 - Eye Examination (40mP) [GUMI]

Achievement Date: 12-10-23, Upload Date: 11-08-06

We have a progressive rock with a freaking glockenspiel and that girl from Cutoff Line again, although she seems a bit more vengeful. Again, there is a lot of control and SM stuff going on with 40mP songs and not many people pick up on it.

#118 - 1 2 Fanclub (MikitoP) [GUMI, Kagamine Rin]

Achievement Date: 12-10-28, Upload Date: 12-08-15

See GUMI and Rin is a genuine combo. Apparently a winning combo. The song is about two fans of Hong Kong who study Chinese. It's sweet and relatable if you are weeaboo or its ilks, like us! Warning, MikitoP does not write songs like this… his songs are a bit more sad or even heart-breaking at times. We’ll get those later.

#119 - Bad ∞ End ∞ Night (Hitoshizuku-P, Yama) [MEIKO, KAITO, Miku, Rin, Len, Luka, Kagupo, GUMI]

Another male-female duo (you see there’s a lot of those), and the beginning of TeamOS’s reign in VOCALOID party songs. Start of the NighT series, which a couple are included on this list. It’s a nice comparison to the two songs below here.

#120 - The Intense Singing of Hatsune Miku (cosMo) [Hatsune Miku]

The sequel to Disappearance. Yes, a sequel. Kind of a revival and the positive spin on the Mythic original. Showcases the growth of cosMo with an expert control of speed and instrumentation and the lyrics are wise as the previous song.

#121 - Alice in Musicland (OSTER Project) [Miku, Rin, Len, KAITO, Luka, MEIKO]

Achievement Date: 12-12-07, Upload Date: 11-07-24

One of the reasons I can’t rib on OSTER Project too much. The 11 minute song never bores the audience, even though it doesn’t really move beyond its jazz core, and showcases how much OSTER Project rules in the VOCALOID jazz portion. And the tuning for all the characters are not bad either, which is a major feat for her.

Hi! I just wanted to say I really love both Jealousy, the oneshots and R&R. I just really like how you write everything! Unfortunately I can't really think of a good fic-specific question. but if its not too troublesome, could you pull the curtain back and tell me how you actually write? As in the process, I've tried writing a few times and just end up in a whirlpool of AO3 tabs and vocaloid music playlists

This is a great question! It took me a lot of practice to get into the groove with writing and figure out how I can really get into the right headspace to do it. Now it’s basically my favourite thing to do.

Personally I need silence to write. I used to have podcasts or music going in the background, but one day I realised if I turned it off, I got so much more done and it was a lot easier for me to focus. I know that everyone is different, so see which way you like better.

A good rule of thumb to stop yourself from getting too overwhelmed is to focus on a very small part of your piece first. A lot of my chapters started with just a few lines of dialogue and I built around that! It’s also a good tip to write out of order. If you have to get through a boring part to write fun stuff, write the fun stuff first and you’ll find the boring stuff comes easier. In a lot of cases, it turns out to be unnecessary anyways :)

This is probably going to be unhelpful but starting with a Vibe is how I mainly get ideas for fanfics. When I started R & R, I knew I wanted a nostalgic, coming-of-age type feel to the first chapter. With Jealousy, I wanted a slow-burn based on confusing feelings and painful yearning. So maybe you want to write a fic with heavy, angsty vibes and unrequited desire? Start with what you want and build around that idea!

Also ROUTINE! Do you have a time where you like to write? Is it easier for you in the morning or at nighttime? What programme do you like to write on? Where do you like to write, at a desk, in your room, on your bed? Establishing a routine will help you be as productive as possible. Personally, I write best in the late morning and late at night on the coffee table in my living room!

Finally, if you want to write but don’t feel like you’re up to it, then read instead. You’ll learn so much about people’s ideas about the same characters, and be inspired by their own style of writing so it might come easier to you whenever you feel like trying again.

EDIT: I FORGOT ANOTHER REALLY IMPORTANT THING!!! Do NOT let your confidence get rocked! Anyone who has spoken to me for more than two seconds knows I’m not secure in my writing. I constantly doubt and second guess myself, I overthink chapters for days and read them over and over so often I hate them. I got into a terrible habit of every time I found an incredible fic written by someone else, while my first thought was ‘This author is amazing’, my second thought was ‘I will never make something this good’. That results in me not even wanting to write anymore, and there were even times I considered scrapping Jealousy I disliked it so much.

BUT all that mindset does is hinder you. Never compare yourself to another author and never let yourself feel bad about your writing. People are often their own greatest critics. Always keep writing, keep re-writing, keep editing and practising until you improve!

Oh no, this got long didn’t it? I’ll shut up now but I hope at least some of this was helpful! Thank you for the ask and for being so kind about my stuff <3

The tldr is princess emu running away and setting off to cure a blight/corruption that’s destroying the kingdom with her fun little group of clowns (personal knight/body guard tsukasa, really talented but not well liked at his prestigious sorcery training college rui, recluse healer/potion maker nene who is dragged out of her self isolation) with vocaloid gods (primarily focusing on kaito/meiko divorce arc after luka died. kaimeiluka suffering 🎉 love loses)

Very shaky on the Lore in general and I’ll probably change my mind abt a bunch of stuff if I end up doing anything w it at all

The blight started after the death of the former king (emu’s grandpa) and the industrialization of the kingdom kicked up and is essentially a slow moving plague on the land that corrupts/sucks the life out of everything it touches. Formerly vibrant forests and farms that used to yield abundant crops become barren hostile wastelands. Towns become inhabitable. Animals grow in size and aggression, warping into nearly unrecognizable monsters that seek out humans to attack and kill. Humans who briefly come in contact with the blight become sickly and frail as their bodies try (and fail) to fight off the supernatural plague consuming their life force - they survive, but their health is constantly wavering and slowly declining. Humans who have had too much contact with the blight rapidly wither away.

The otoris are largely untouched by this by virtue of living in the capital and attempts to eradicate the blight only slows it down. The current king and princes (emu’s father and brothers) turn to industrialization for both solutions and for profit*, focusing on helping the nobility that have largely been unaffected instead of the towns on the outskirts of the kingdom that have been hit the hardest. Emu grew up unaware of the blight at all until she was old enough to begin sneaking out, tired of the stuffy life of being a princess, and met people who had evacuated from their homes and were still suffering while her family ignored them. She begins learning all she can in secret, continuing to sneak out until she eventually gets caught and her family feels the need to hire personal guards to prevent this.

Tsukasa came from a family that moved closer to the capital to escape the blight (the rest of l/n did as well. No prsk ocs die in the past present or future i prommy) after saki briefly came into contact with it and became ill**. He joined the knights with the goal of protecting people from the blighted monsters and helping others, graduated at the top of his class, and was promptly assigned to prevent one (1) single princess from actively endangering herself. This will be easy I’m insulted by this -> (after losing track of emu for the fifth time in a week) I’m actually in hell I think.

Emu does a Big Escape because she learned of a prophecy? Hints of ways to stop the blight? something. She couldn’t just stand there and do nothing while the people of her kingdom that she dearly loves suffered. Tsukasa spends a week chasing after her to bring her back while she effortlessly evades him until he finally captures her. On their way back to the capital he’s like Why. What Was The Point Of This. & emu opens up about how she wants to stop the blight and help save the people she’s meant to be ruling. Tsukasa is shocked that the princess he assumed was spoiled/airheaded/just causing trouble for funsies is actually doing more than the rest of her family (first moment of real bonding between them) -> I have a duty to the people that employ me… but this could help saki (& other ppl)… -> ok I’m all for it but I’m coming with you to help/protect you.

They meet rui while he’s studying the blight and attempting to clear some of it out (& making more progress than anyone else has before) and emu is immediately like this guy rocks can we keep him. Tsukasa does not trust him at first (rui purposefully acts extremely sketchy tbf) but rui is their best lead so he decides to at least approach him and ask for his help. Rui’s extreme interest in the blight, incredible talent, and experiments with artificial life forms (giving his silly little inventions consciousness) has made him an outcast at the magic institution he currently attends so he already has one foot out the door but he also does not trust that he got lucky enough to meet likeminded people that will help him work towards his goals so he’s like I can certainly come with you for a bit and point you towards the right direction with the knowledge I have (very noncommittal). I’d like to make a pit stop though I have a friend (nene) who may be able to help as well.

On the way to nene they all bond a bit more - emu likes talking to rui because he understands her way of speaking, he’s fun and very kind, and also because he makes tsukasa unclench and stop acting like he needs to be with her at all times or else she’ll die. Emu isn’t incompetent and unable to take care of herself but tsukasa is a Freak who needs to feel like he’s in control of the situation to keep everyone safe & something about rui being equally powerful (in the magic field as opposed to the physical combat field) and also his age turns off the I Alone Am Responsible For Everything switch in his brain just a little bit and he’s able to relax. Tsukasa enjoys rui’s company even when rui seems determined to fuck with him at every opportunity because they have a lot in common (in every universe they’re insane show freaks) and grows to trust him. (Emu looking @ ruikasa: I know what you are.) Rui realizes that he did find people who actually think his knowledge and talents are cool and enjoy being around him.

Right when they’re getting to nene’s tsukasa gets injured fighting a monster when one of rui’s machines malfunctions and they drag his unconscious body to her cabin. At 3 am. (Nene coming downstairs after hearing a huge commotion at her front door) rui it is way too early for you to be - who are these people. and why is one of them bleeding out on my floor. Nene heals tsukasa and while he recovers 1) rui attempts to convince nene to join tsukasa and emu 2) rui attempts to leave the group because he believes he’s going to injure them*** 3) emu is following nene everywhere. Incredibly infatuated. Wants to Know Everything About Her.

Nene became a recluse after patients she attempted to heal from blight induced illness passed away. It was always a futile endeavor but it hit her incredibly hard and she blamed herself for not being good enough. If she just lives alone and makes healing potions to be sold by others she doesn’t have to have to see the patients she can’t help and deal with that pain. Emu begins bringing her out of her shell by taking her around the nearby town/supporting her talent/making her realize there is a point in connecting with others. Nene also helps emu who has been blaming herself for tsukasa’s injury (if he hadn’t coke with me he would have been fine) but struggles to entirely get through to her.

Meanwhile tsukasa is fully recovered and ready to get going again when rui is like actually I think I’ll stay behind. ruikasa argue over rui wanting to leave. Bringing the pristine vibes in nene’s cabin Down. Sick and twisted of them honestly. Emunene split up in an attempt to get them to sort it out -> nene and rui go on a walk. They talk and both come to the conclusion to continue with the group -> emu and Tsukasa talk and reflect on their goals but he can tell something is up with her that she’s not telling him. When they all reunite they’re like wow so glad this is all sorted out let’s rest and head out tomorrow :)

Emu of course sneaks out, determined to do this on her own, believing this is her responsibility and she’s just hurting others by dragging them into it. Nene wakes up and sees that she (& all of her stuff) is missing and sprints out of the cabin to track her down (rui & tsukasa catch up to her after hearing her leave). Nene convinces emu to be fully open with the rest of the group -> wxs intergroup issues are (mostly) solved and the plot moves onto actually curing the blight.

The blight is a result of meiko (god of death) punishing humans for the death of Luka (god of the natural world) (result of industrialization). Kaito (god of life) does not agree with this approach and continually nudges wxs towards meiko with the belief that they’ll be able to get through to her in her grief. Specifically emu (understands her grief). Kaito voice please babe pick up the phone and call me I know this isn’t your heart. Sorry tsukasa I know you’re the wxs lead and the sekai is yours but it’s my au and I get to decide the most important character. Even if it’s your pov (& Nene’s) (easiest and most entertaining povs to write. Rui is also fun but not being in his head helps w plot and I lack emu’s sense of whimsy and joy so it’s difficult to write her voice)

* - PXL selling out reference. The otoris aren’t malicious they’re just going about things the wrong way and are out of touch with the people they rule.

** - immensely dislike “disability cured” tropes so spoiler wxs does succeed in their quest but the blight caused illness becomes a chronic but non fatal condition. Saki isn’t actively dying over the course of the au but her health worsening is always a possibility her family is concerned with. She’s still able to see her friends and make music/help her parents with the restaurant they own, but not able to travel or else she would be having Words with her brother. He sends her letters but travels too much to be able to receive any. Everyone boo him.

*** - Halloween event/our happy ending event mash up. I’m not following the plot of the main story because I don’t really feel like making tsukasa have the selfish goals -> remembering his original dreams development in this au because 1) it wouldn’t fit given the founding of wxs is spread out 2) in this au he would not leave saki to go on a journey unless what he was doing would benefit her imo.

Characters slightly aged up (~22 and 21) because a 17 year old would not be trusted to guard a princess. Neither would a 22 year old tbf but idc.

Nenerobo is a companion/helper rui built for nene. Toya is nobility from a family that was close to the tenmas but is currently traveling around w vbs. L/N primarily stay in the capital (shiho travels a bit and can occasionally give tsukasa a letter from saki) but the rest of the groups are encountered by wxs as they roam around. Probably. Miku/kagamines are also gods that interact with wxs but kaito is the one communicating with them the most (although miku and the kagamines are more forthcoming with information.) (Kaito: I miss my wives. I miss them a lot tsukasa. I’ll be back. Tsukasa: ???????)

White day rui/tsukasa and our happy ending nene/emu based designs. Pre running away emu would be based on her wedding card. Rui being in a fancy little academy is both a reference to him going to a boarding school for his first year of high school in canon and also an excuse for me to incorporate his white day design in the au because it rocks and also I would not be able to take his our happy ending design seriously in this context. it just wouldn’t work.

Entr’acte of Evil, page 14-36

“Come, kneel to me!”

Riliane Lucifen d’Autriche

(Kagamine Rin)

The princess who rules the Kingdom of Lucifenia. For her arrogant behavior and proud personality, she is despised by her people, called the “Daughter of Evil”. She and her servant Allen are twins, but as she’s lost her memories of when she was young she doesn’t remember him. Her life was endangered in the civil war with the revolutionary army, but with Allen’s help she escaped from the palace, and later came to live in a monastery.

AkunoP’s comment

Her character isn’t very complicated in construction, following the template of the ‘willful girl’. I guess she’s developed a bit more than her portrayal in the song. Though I did want to write more on how she grows after joining the monastery (haha). I do regret not being able to do that. It’d be nice if I could write about that somewhere.

-Her monastery outfit is cinched together by a strap tied at the left side on her waist. Her back is the same design as her front.

-These are the accessories that Riliane wears on her person (rough depiction). There’s a lot of simple items that just have a gem in the middle, but they are still quite expensive.

*Princess outfit: She has a kind of light and fluffy dress design with a lot of lace and ribbons to show her more adorable side. There’re a lot of rose motifs on her decorations. I wanted to have her hold onto some connection with her and Allen’s parent, so I drew her necklace to look like it was it was made out of something Queen Anne wore.

*Monastery outfit: She’s a novice nun, so her skirt length is a little short. It’s a simple outfit that’s just overall a bunch of sewn together cloth, but as she’s a former princess she has the kind of setup of wearing it well. Though she’s probably a bit bad at her work. Or maybe I should just say she’s not used to it.

Allen Avadonia

(Kagamine Len)

A boy who works as a common servant in the Lucifenian royal palace, despite possessing substantial skill at swordplay and horseback riding. He has a very mature personality, but occasionally he’ll show a bit of boyishness in his expression. He is actually Riliane’s younger twin brother. He wishes for Riliane’s happiness more than anything. He helps Riliane escape during the civil war with the revolutionary army and takes her place, being executed as the princess.

AkunoP’s comment

He was the hardest character to write (haha). Despite being a protagonist. Mostly in that I would worry that I was making him seem too young (though he is young), and that his youth in itself was a bit difficult to write. Fourteen-year-old boys are tricky. Even now I don’t think I’ve really got a handle on it (haha). There were a lot of parts where I felt like I messed up.

-The ribbon that ties his hair back looks to be a butterfly knot. His shoes are a simple loafer design.

*Servant outfit: He’s a servant, so he has clothes that are easy to move in. In order to show a bit of his boyishness I made the lower cuff of his outer jacket a bit too big for him. His pockets are decorative. I think he should take off his upper coat when doing more strenuous work.

*Traveling outfit: I made his coat a little bit loose, so that it could be worn as-is above his normal clothing. I was thinking about various things when I drew it—like making sure he has a relaxed formal air even when he’s attendant on the princess, that he’s alright even if it rains as he has a hood, that it’s one-size-fits-all, etc.

Michaela

(Hatsune Miku)

A servant who serves Lord Keel, and originally a spirit that lived under the great earth god, Held. She has an inquisitive personality, and her hobby is people-watching. She chose the appearance of the ‘original sinner’ as her human form when she reincarnated. She is beloved by everyone for her kind and sociable personality, as well as her beautiful looks and singing voice. She’s always worrying about her dear friend Clarith, and also this “love” that humans have.

AkunoP’s comment

This one was also hard to work with (haha). On a fundamental level, she’s less the “of Evil” Miku and more just straight up “VOCALOID Miku”. Like the whole “Miku is an angel” thing from the early days. I think it was through her relationship with Clarith that she was finally able to set herself apart as the “of Evil” Miku. I’ve still got a few more developments for her yet (haha).

-The sleeves of her town outfit are lined with lace. They are three-quarter length.

*Town outfit: Given that she’s meant to be adorable, her outfit was made with a kind of fluttering look in her sleeves and such. There are a lot of parts where two sleeve ends overlap. I drew her to be more of a diva than a servant in appearance. Also, while her pendant is a scallop in shape, its size is close to that of the end of her thumb.

*Village outfit: As she’s sort of German in style, I drew her with the image of the German Fairy Tale Road in mind. As I have the personal idea that it’s a hand-me-down from Clarith’s mom, the skirt for her dress is a little too long. I didn’t get the idea that she was dressed all that fashionably in the village, so I made it so that this one had no ribbon.

“I—I’m sorry! I’m really sorry!”

Clarith

(Yowane Haku)

A servant who works at the Keel estate alongside Michaela. She’s a Netsuma girl with white hair and red eyes, and she has suffered persecution from the Elphe people due to being an ethnic minority. It’s because of this that she developed her catchphrase, “I’m sorry for being alive”, and her pessimistic personality. On a fundamental level she’s clumsy and not really good at anything, but she does have skill in cooking. She also likes plants and animals, and she takes very good care of saplings.

AkunoP’s comment

She’s the character that’s the closest to my “real self”. “I’m sorry for being alive” is actually my real life catchphrase (haha). So she’s easy to empathize with. She has a few odd points but she’s really the most normal, “everyman” character in the story. Haku herself was originally conceived not as a VOCALOID but as a “master”(song producer), you know.

*This character was based on “Yowane Haku”, a derivative of the VOCALOID 2 Character Vocal Series 01 Hatsune Miku published by Crypton Future Media.

-The length of her hair goes down to slightly above her knees. She also tends to use the bangs on the side of her face to hide her ears.

Ichika’s comment

*Town outfit: On the whole she’s like Michaela, but I made her design more simple to express a grown-up and “in the background” air. I didn’t see her as someone to wear particularly girly clothes, so her collar is a bit more masculine. I think four out of five times she’d have Michaela help out with the ties on her back.

*Monastery outfit: I designed her sleeves to be neat so that it would be easy for her to cook, which is her main strength. As they don’t have any ostentatious stuff like hair decorations at the monastery I tearfully cut down on her ribbon… It’s a useless detail but her waist sash is supposed to be in a granny knot.

*Village outfit: I put her in a simple, full dress that’s easy to put on. I had intended for her outfit to both show that she was an outsider and be something that Clarith herself picked out to not stand out in a village, which ultimately gave me this image of a slightly overdressed outfit. Hence her design coming out like this.

Chartette Langley

(Kasane Teto)

A maid who serves in the palace, and Allen’s childhood friend. Due to her frightening strength she excels at heavy work, but struggles with more delicate tasks and is often breaking things inside the palace. The princess is fond of her for her outgoing personality, and they will sometimes take tea-time together. During the revolution she engages in a duel against Mariam, one of the Three Heroes, using a broadsword larger than her own height.

AkunoP’s comment

I like this character (haha). She was easy to work with. I wish I could have had her do more. She didn’t get to do anything in the second book, so I’ve been thinking about maybe having her show up in the third book.

*This character is based on “Kasane Teto”.

-During the duel she took on the style of wielding a sword larger than her own body. For that reason her outfit was made to show ease of movement.

-The broadsword is of a simple design, but that’s overpowered by its sheer size. It sort of has the image of a blunt weapon more than a slashing implement.

Ichika’s comment

*Maid outfit: The ends of her sleeves are precisely folded back. The hem of her skirt is frilly and puffs out a bit, as the style of the maid outfit in the country of yellow. The hem is also slightly short, as she does a lot of running around. The ribbon at her collar had been red at first to match her hair, but I figured that it wouldn’t be red in the country of yellow so I changed it to yellow.

* Resistance outfit: She’s a peasant, so she has light armor on her casual wear. The coverings for her wrists were a bit more unrefined at first. I drew her leg armor in to serve as a sort of counterweight for when she swings her sword around. As such, they’re supposed to be much heavier than they look. She could probably mortally wound someone with one kick.

Ney Phatipe

(Akita Neru)

A maid who serves in the palace, and the adoptive daughter of the head maid and one of the Three Heroes, Mariam. She does all her work flawlessly, but it’s countered by her being a gossip and loose-lip, which results in some turmoil occurring. She’s favored by Riliane, and becomes a source of information for her. Her true identity is that of Marlon’s thirteenth princess, Ney Marlon.

AkunoP’s comment

Like Clarith, Ney is a character that I had a concept of since the very beginning. She was originally a childhood friend of the twins who stood in a sort of “big sister” role, and wound up becoming “another servant”. She’s the character who’s changed the most from how she was in the beginning. I actually had plans to make her into a joke character (haha).

*This character was based on “Akita Neru”, a derivative of the VOCALOID 2 Character Vocal Series 01 Hatsune Miku published by Crypton Future Media.

-I considered several different ways of her tying her hair when she’s an assassin, but how she ends up being in that situation is a secret.

*Maid outfit: The basics are the same as Chartette’s maid uniform. Only the hem is longer, to show the difference in work and her personality. She feels like the kind of person to wear her maid uniform so well that she could do her work from start to finish all day without anything out of place. She was trained by her adoptive mother.

*Assassin outfit: She’s doing espionage activities, so it’s an entirely black uniform. The main focus was ease of movement. The boots are made of a soft fabric to make it harder to hear her footsteps. Her ponytail can be bundled up and pushed under her clothing depending on the situation. It probably just barely gets in. –Fits in.

“…Stop mocking me.”

Kyle Marlon

(KAITO)

The king of the island country of Marlon (the “Country of Blue”), and Riliane’s fiancé. Riliane adores him, calling him her “dear”, but he falls in love at first sight with Michaela when meeting her in the mansion of his friend, Keel, and so breaks off the engagement on his end. He is no match for his mother, Empress Dowager Prim, something he’s a bit ashamed of.

AkunoP’s comment

I’m so sorry, but he’s the one I care about the least (haha). Frankly I seriously didn’t want to write him all that much. These novels aside, don’t expect me to make KAITO this cool overall. Though he’s a pretty toothsome character, with how many turns he gets.

-The basis for his masked appearance is a certain sha[redacted]. It’s a simple outfit, but the decorations it has here and there are gaudy in a minor way.

Ichika’s comment

*Main outfit: As he was designed with a theme of solemnity, his whole appearance is composed with a precise and stiff feel. The collar of his jacket is designed like a suit. His sleeves are meant to feel a bit stern. I drew his outfit with a sort of square image of the country of blue in my head, so he’s light on the curves. Since he’s a male character I put more emphasis on being chic than flashy.

*Disguise outfit: I drew this to feel like the sort of typical outfit of the country of blue. But the quality of the fabric is a grade above that of the average person. If I were to draw in any armor it would let slip what country he’s from, so he’s just got the one sword as equipment. It’s the same sword he wields in his king outfit, but he tries to hide it.

“Let’s go, everyone.”

Germaine Avadonia

(MEIKO)

Allen’s adopted sibling who lives in the town below Lucifenia castle, and the adopted daughter of Leonhart, one of the Three Heroes. She’s dependable and cares about her friends, but that comes with the snag of her being a little crude. In actuality she’s quite smart, becoming the leader of the Resistance and earning the people’s respect.

AkunoP’s comment

At first, I had wanted to make her into a classic, genuinely heroic character…But I guess that got a bit warped. Like Miku, there’s a lot of influence taken from her character as a VOCALOID. I want to write about her past sometime. She’s an unexpectedly pitiable character, who winds up not having a lot of influence.

Ichika’s comment

In addition to being based on Leonhart’s armor, the insignia above her chest is taken from the hilt of his sword, so in that sense it’s like her equipment has inherited her father’s will. It’s lighter armor, given that as she’s a woman there’s more emphasis on maneuverability. As it prioritizes heroism over sex appeal, her legs haven’t been left exposed.

“You working hard, kids?”

Leonhart Avadonia

(LEON)

Allen and Germaine’s adoptive father, and one of the Three Heroes. He’s the captain of the guard of the royal family, but he clashes with the princess over their different opinions. An unparalleled drinker, he often drinks the night away with his daughter Germaine.

AkunoP’s comment

Among the Three Heroes, he’s the one that came to mind first. He vanishes pretty quickly from the story for someone who was present in the plot of the Daughter of Evil since its original conception… Though I guess he does get to do more in the bonus story, so it’s all good. He’s a bit of an old fogey by the Daughter of Evil era. I did have some other more detailed ideas for him, but ultimately wound up not using them.

Ichika’s comment

He has solidly built heavy armor. The main colors of his outfit are red and white, but there’s a single thread of yellow on his mantle alone to symbolize the people of the country of yellow. The mantle is part of his uniform as captain of the guard; he didn’t have one during his hero days.

Elluka Clockworker

(Megurine Luka)

A court sorceress who served the previous monarch, and one of the Three Heroes. Her predictions are never wrong, and so there are many who trust in her in the palace. She has lived for a long time, and is carrying out the task of collecting the “Vessels of Deadly Sin” as a favor to the great land god Held.

AkunoP’s comment

It’s the postscript character! (haha) Originally I planned for the sorceress role was going to be played by a different character, but then I swapped her out when Luka was published, resulting in her ultimately getting the best role. Personality-wise she’s similar to how I am when I’m drunk (haha). So, like Clarith, I’m quite fond of her, and she’s easy to write.

It’s a bit hard to tell with the robe on, but despite not looking like it she actually has some degree of exposure. Mostly her shoulders and legs. Her outfit was designed to look bewitching. The jewels at her hip are taken from her VOCALOID image character. After Riliane, she probably has the most accessories out of anyone else.

Gumillia

(Megpoid)

A sorceress in training who serves in the palace, and Elluka’s apprentice. She is very close with Michaela, and was originally one of the spirits who served Held alongside her. She picked the form of Elphegort’s first female prime minister, Gumina Glassred, as her appearance when reincarnating as a human.

She hardly got to do anything at all…Since she hasn’t had a lot of influence on the story at present, I think I’d really like to give her more to do in the third book (haha). I think she’s the character with the most potential. She was originally a spirit, and is a sorceress to boot. So, expect great things from her in the future!

As she’s Elluka’s apprentice her outfit design is made to resemble hers, though it also shows a more apprentice-esque childishness in it. But I also see her not changing her outfit even after her training his passed. Like Elluka, she has a single jewel around her hip.

“I am one of the Three Heroes, Mariam Phatipe!”

Mariam Phatipe

(MIRIAM)

She once engaged in espionage as one of the Three Heroes, but now she serves as the head maid in the palace. Her personality is extremely rigid, but she has her kind side as well, and there are many who admire her. She prides herself on covert work, like running secret intelligence.

Her appearance is meant to feel like a gorgeous, cool beauty. In conception she’s this badass secret intelligence operative, but in the end she wound up being a dud spy (haha). She was completely useless, and failed to see what was happening with her own daughter. Her position is sort of that of everyone’s stern mother. Though the “Of Evil” series is full of stern women, and all of them are strong.

Ichika’s comment

She does have a theme of being a rigid, cool beauty. With this sort of masculine air, too. Her outfit is a bit old-fashioned, bearing in mind the image of the previous queen’s reign. I pictured her being able to move a fair bit whatever her uniform, so I think it would always be prim and proper, without anything out of place.

Anne Lucifen D’autriche

(Sweet Ann)

The old queen of Lucifenia, and the mother of Riliane, who admired her. She often said she wanted to “build a country where children can live with a smile”, and devoted her energies into the strengthening and expansion of her country. Like her husband Arth I, she passed away from the incurable “Gula” disease.

She’s sort of like what Riliane could have turned out like if she’d been raised properly. Strong, kind, and popular. Only, I’m sure she must have been more mischievous when she was younger. She probably had reckless adventures and passionate romantic stories, but I’ve got no plans to write any of them (haha).

Ichika’s comment

I drew her with a theme of a queen’s strictness and a woman’s gentleness. Actually, her character design is the one I liked the most on first drawing it. She’s not too gaudy, but I’m really happy her outfit conveys a sense of stability in its place.

Keel Freezis

(Hiyama Kiyoteru)

A famous merchant who conducts trade in Elphegort, while being an immigrant from Marlon. He serves as the head of the trade association, and is also proficient in handling information. He’s an old friend of Marlon’s King Kyle. He has three children.

The no.2 super afterthought character (haha). At first I had no plans for him to do anything at all, but when I tried giving him a few more scenes he turned out to be a pretty fun character; I ended up shortening Kyle’s role to compensate (haha). It was a lot of fun to write a character so cheerful. And it was pretty amusing to have him be such a doting parent.

Ichika’s comment

As he’s a merchant, he wears shoes and an outfit that are both easy to walk in. His uniform base is the country of blue. Fundamentally his robe is for use in business discussions, and is supposed to easy to remove when it gets hot or gets in the way. I would imagine he probably dresses down a bit outside of occasions where he’s conversing with royalty and nobles.

Yukina Freezis

(Kaai Yuki)

The eldest daughter of the wealth Elphegort merchant Keel Freezis. She’s very attached to her servant Clarith, and often has her wrapped around her little finger, being both naïve and mischievous. She has a hobby of writing stories, and excels at it despite her young age.

She’s going to be more active in the third book. She’ll be a main character!! (haha) She becomes the author of the Freezis Fairytales, and the official teller of the story. Come to think of it I did buy the Yuki software the other day, so I might make a song for her after this.

Ichika’s comment

Frankly she’s the most fun when drawing. While heavily basing her off of her original character image, I also gave her a more chic and mature air befitting a merchant’s daughter. I’m happy I was able to make her appearance show how doted on she is by Keel.

Gast Venom

(Gackpoid)

A skilled mercenary who heads a mercenary band, called “The Demon of Asmodean”. During the revolution he stays at the palace until the end under Allen’s request, and fought against the revolutionaries using a weapon called a katana, something unfamiliar to the Evillious region.

He’s got a mystery for so few appearances (haha). I’ve given him a ton of backstory but I haven’t shared any of it. Like that he’s a descendant of Venomania, that he isn’t actually [redacted], none of it’s been shown in story. And he got killed by an amateur girl (haha). In that sense I guess he’s more pathetic than Kyle. I’d like to get some of it out someday though.

Ichika’s comment.

I made him more Japanese in style to give him a foreign feel. I drew his outfit and his equipment to be like the protective armor of a swordsman. His outfit’s meant to have a slightly feminine component to it, like having a feminine sash at his waist. He’s got a decent amount of layering in his clothing. His physique is meant to feel pretty lean.

Hehehe I haven't thought about the characters and their story in a long time, until recently...but I never put a huge amount of thought into them before either! I kinda just knew I...wished I could make something cool that had everything I wanted in that kind of game lmao. Even if it doesn't happen, I felt like I wanted there to be twists and secrets...if it never happens then nobody but me will ever know about them, huh! But, if it does happen then I'll spoil stuff for later! What to do...ah I'll share about it! But I'm giving it a spoiler warning for something that doesn't exist anyway lmao Also I'm not a writer or a scientist this is all wacky world rules ok xd also there might be inconsistencies idk I never wrote anything down I'll tell u their heights! In high school June and Puzzle were da weeaboos who listened to vocaloid on their phones at lunch. Puzzle wore cat ears, big headphones, and tutus to school. I think....I decided that because of her old bad design lmao. I thought I had a drawing of her in cat ears but I can't find it 😔 June prolly just wore hoodies and graphic t-shirts. They were each others prom dates! June wore a tux! Okay spoilery stuff ahead!

I have a general idea what I want the story to be, but right now I just see it as disjointed scenes in my head. I posted some June and Puzzle wearing dresses where I wanted a scene to happen in a casino on the ship. Cruise ship casinos are kinda lame though lol, but it'll be as big and cool as I want >:•3 and it's an excuse to have everyone in cool formal wear cuz that's always fun! The cult leader calls for a big party on the ship and everyone has to attend! It's also where he culls the herd...because not everyone is worthy of going to heaven...apparently Koa likes playing video games! He's on the top of the leaderboard for one MMO, and during one event the top prize was blueprints for an in-game item: roller skates! It would make for cool merch to put on your wall or something. There was a rumor among the playerbase that the blueprints could make skates that function as they do in the game. Koa won the prints then used them to custom build his own skates (they look kinda generic now but I haven't put a lot of thought into their design lmao). The combination of materials used and construction give them a magical quality that allows him to skate faster than any human could! He's always pushing his limits, and sometimes it gets him in twubble xd Keizo has an issue with bad dreams...at night he replays all the times in his life where people were rude to him or each other, how he needs to keep peace between them, he just really hates assholes! He has nightmares about them treating him badly and there's nothing he can do, because at his height and with his strength he'd come off as the bad guy no matter what! They push and push 'til he's about to snap...then he wakes up! The rage super heats his blood and his skin glows red and steam pours out his ears! His hair is all wacky cuz it holds it's shape on the pillow from all the heat lmao June and the rest of them find out about it when they see steam coming out from under his door at night. Don't wake him up though! If he's still glowing hot he'll sleep walk while in a berserk state. First, it makes him really rude himself lmao. He'll say all the nasty things he won't when he's awake! Second, if he sees someone doin' shit he don't like, they're gettin' these 🤜🤛 In his happy ending you'd see him with his hair flat for the first time wouldn't that be nice :•3 Adam is always doing experiments on himself, kinda just for shits, kinda because he wants to discover something amazing....!.....?!?!??! When he was younger, his sister, who he loved v much, died. He wanted to become a doctor, not because he wanted to find a cure for the thing that killed his sister...because she died in an accident! He wanted to find a way to make people invincible! He's always injecting himself with stuff hoping it'll make him stronger. He likes Keizo as a friend, but to Adam Keizo is a perfect specimen of an indestructable human. Adam's been fascinated with him for a while, but Keizo also just makes for a good subject for testing against! Also, they met when Adam was studying abroad and Keizo came up on a motorbike and attacked the wheels on Adam's scooter. Cute! :•) Keizo used to be a bad boy :•( Other experiments Adam's done: Eyesight like a HAWK Cat ears but for real Jelly bones(?) Longer ween 😳 Lloyd is a stinky tech wiz who likes playing around with AI's and robotics! He has myassive myega brains and he monitors many of the functions of the ship by himself in his server room. When the captain is captured and thrown off the ship, Lloyd uses his know-how and special accesses to make sure the cult doesn't make a mess of everything. He knows about and can see everything that happens on the ship...for fun he likes video games toooo! And plays with Koa! He likes buildin' lil gadgets n tings for fun too! They can come in real handy! nsfw! Stuff past here!!!!!!!!! June, Koa, and Lloyd are all inexperienced!

As a lover, Keizo tries to be gentle...but once he gets into it he can be a bit rough! If you're into it, just enjoy! Or speak up and he'll slow down! Hmmm I was inspired by a scene from the film Crying Freeman (which I haven't actually watched 8•|) of some ppl doin' it in a closet(?)...it's all dark and cramped and humid and their skin is so shiny and glistening it's probably the thing that awoken me to drawing people super sweaty. I just can't help myself 😳 def wanna give Keizo a scene like that. This doodle was inspired by it actually lmao

Adam is patient and gentle! Lots of kisses and verbal reassurance and checking in w/ u. He's aware of his age and he doesn't wanna come off badly so he'll let you do all the pursuing. And June will pursue him hard if she has to! He's also gonna make you beg and ask, just so he's sure sure :•) He loves to sit her up on the examining table n do things wit his mouf n fingers 😳 I'd probably make it an option to call him daddy in certain scenarios...up to u if u choose it find out what happens for urself idk 😳😳😳 or don't

Koa likes to tease you, maybe bully you a lil, but when it comes to intimacy he's a wimp! I just like the idea of making the bully bend to your will, but he likes it. It just feels good to wipe that cocky smile off his face! Step on him! Make him whimper! I know June's a virg too, but Koa is just so easy to tease it makes it feel like second nature. BUT the more time they spend together, the more confident Koa becomes. So! Enjoy havin' him under your thumb while you can cuz it might not last forever! Lloyd tries to stay composed when June starts showing an interest. He's usually alone in his server room, but secretly appreciates her company when she comes by. At first he'll act like he's too busy. He's not used to being around women! As his interest in June grows it becomes harder to hide his feelings! So June notices...and teases him! Cuz it's just so easyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyYYYYYYY 😩 Seeing his serious expression crack when you put ur hands in his pants is lots of fun :•3 And he shows you a voice he's never shown anyone else before 🤤 He does his research and with your help he'll learn exactly how to worship u 😌 IF it ever happens there has to b a new game plus where u unlock threesome scenes with Koa/Lloyd and Adam/Keizo :•x That's all 4 now! Some thoughts on The Caligula Effect 2

So I joke about this game getting a second remake to my friends online and the next moment I learn THIS was announced during the Japanese Nintendo Direct. Let me spill out my thoughts to spark discussion as well as provide a record to myself if this game actually does get localized.

Everything is under the cut!

My thoughts on Overdose were that it has a fantastic world... and that’s it. Out of the game’s cast, there were maybe four characters I liked, and the rest had moments that made me lose all sympathy for them. I recall it was common for some Let’s Players to like the villains better than the protagonists, and I’d agree on that front. I actually think the anime is the best iteration of this game’s story, changing up the formula enough to provide a really solid characterization arc to everyone. But Overdose suffers from poor writing issues (killing Eiji offscreen in the best ending was one of the worst decisions they made), rough handling of certain topics, boring and monotonous dungeons, and 500 social links you’re never going to do. I’m incredibly critical of this game, and I’d never recommend it to someone without a LOT of disclaimers, but somehow I still love it.

Already this game looks CRAZY good visually. It doesn’t look like a reskinned Vita game anymore, with something a little more reminiscent of say, the Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth games. That’s not to say that the game doesn’t still implement its fantastic character art, which still show up next to the speech bubbles. (At least the models have moving jaws. That’s important.)

Here’s to really hoping this game won’t be another Caligula 1 reskin, because uh... the game is about a protagonist who realizes that the world is a virtual one created by a Vocaloid who won’t let anyone out and joins up with a group of teenagers who also want to get out despite the fact that their real world lives were horrible so that they can set things right and they call themselves the Go-Home club (and also a Vocaloid gives them weapons made out of black stuff) but the people that are stopping them are basically the servants and guardians of the Vocaloid keeping them trapped in, who also happen to be humans who can’t return to the real world because their real world lives were so horrible, and so they have to fight because the Vocaloid won’t let them out otherwise. I mean, of course it won’t be a reskin, but I’m surprised at just how much of the original story they kept.

As for things they absolutely did NOT keep, DAMN this game looks dark! I was once remarking to a friend about how Caligula’s story would appeal better to me specifically if they’d gone with a religious pressure rather than idol stan theme, and they appear to have really pulled through with that religious pressure. I just realized, while writing this, that the image I showed off above actually has an image of an angel in the stained glass window being worshiped by fans with glow sticks. Furthermore, there’s a gothic cathedral-like altar, a halo behind Regret’s head, and this whole exchange looks like it takes place in a church. While I’m not religious myself, I can talk a lot about church architecture (see: my Fire Force livetweet) and I’m interested to see how this game handles it.

Not only that, most of the character designs seem darker and very different from the original game’s. Take a look at this game’s idol goddess:

Is μ going through an emo phase? I wouldn’t blame her lol. I think she still has a fantastic design that is in equal parts dreary and beautiful, while perfectly matching the color scheme of the new game.

And what a color scheme it is! The world of Caligula 1 had a gorgeous white, black, pink, brown, and gray color scheme framing bold pops of color in the form of flowers. Caligula 2 changes things up by making black the primary color framing everything else. The pops of color are so much bolder, too, from Noto’s bright yellow sweatshirt to basically everything χ is wearing. Do these changes reflect the story’s potential darker tone too? Or are they representative of something else?

We don’t know too much about the characters, but Caligula 2 looks like it’s giving them different weapons. It looks like the protagonists wield double knives instead of double shotguns. As for the other weapons, I see shortswords, katanas, chains, pistols (much smaller than Shogo’s), canes, and Qiyana’s ohmlatl from League of Legends. Definitely a shift from the original game’s weapons. I wonder if they’ll make a comeback? That giant gun was unique to say the least.

The Obbligato (I think?) are this game’s Ostinato Musicians. Italian for “obliged”, they are the ones who defend Regret from any threats. The one shown off most in the trailer is this guy who looks like the 1010 dudes from No Straight Roads. Man, he really looks like Shadow Knife in that image up there...

Also we get a, um, clown astronaut and a crazy high school yandere. Just to name a few. Definitely not the first time I’ve beat up a clown in a video game. Pretty unique as far as villains go, though. I hope this game has its own villain route, where you learn more about them. I’d really like that.

Social links! Looks like you rank up social links the same way you do in the original game. Do you want to make this character spill out all their trauma? Are you SURE about that, despite there being no negative consequences to you, the player? Awesome. Get ready to be sad.

The battle system is, from what I’ve read, similar, but not the same, as the battle system in Overdose. I’m not going to give too many details on that. They still seem to be time-based with combo chains, but they’re pretty vague. Looks like you still get to unleash crazy special attacks against your enemies. And they in turn can unleash crazy special attacks against you.

I absolutely want to see a. better characters and b. better overall writing. In my opinion these were the two weakest points of Caligula 1. Despite the protagonists’ tragedies, some of the little things they did made me sort of hate them. I did not like how everyone in the original Go-Home Club used Kotaro (who you learn is FOURTEEN!) as a verbal punching bag despite him being one of the kindest characters in the club. As for better overall writing, I stated before that I preferred the anime’s interpretation of events, because I thought they were in a better order overall. Besides killing Eiji offscreen, I hated how they wrote μ to be such a monumentally stupid character (I often point to Persona 5 Royal on how to write a villain like her well) and their, in my opinion, poor handling of certain topics like fatphobia. And though the character episodes sort of redeem them, it’s like... not really? The way I described it to a friend was that while the moral of Caligula 1′s story may have been “We live in a society and everyone’s dealing with their own hardships, but you can’t run away from them forever and you can at least be sympathetic to those facing them”, the character interactions end up dumbing it down to “We live in a society”.

Also an anime adaptation would be really sick. The anime just had so much better writing.

As for what I’m really curious about:

1. Who is Regret and how is she related to μ and Aria? We already know she’s a Virtuadoll like them, but if I recall correctly μ and Aria had some more concreteness to their backstories. Specifically, the human characters remember them existing as vocal synthesizer programs before they became the rules of Mobius. Regret’s backstory is that she just kind of showed up one day. Does she have different origins from μ and Aria? By the same merit, who is χ and how is she related to Regret, μ, and Aria? We know that χ opposes Regret and gives the Go-Home club the power to fight back against her, kind of like what Aria did in Caligula 1, but was she a co-creator of Redo like Aria was, or was her role completely different? The fact that she isn’t a little sparkle like Aria was (as a result of losing all of her power) indicates that their roles might be a little different.

2. What relationship does Redo have to Mobius? We know Mobius was created because Aria and μ wanted a place for humans to live without the sorrows they experienced in the real world. However, eventually μ was manipulated by everyone’s negative emotions and Thorn’s actions. This caused her to prevent anyone from leaving, and also the plot of the first game. Is Redo a second, improved iteration of Mobius, or a completely new virtual space? Were the goals behind its creation the same as in the first game? Or was there another force at work? Is Regret trying to copy μ or improve on her work? Or is she doing what μ did independently? I don’t think there’s enough information to predict the answer to this, but from what I’ve seen, there are a lot of similarities between the two worlds, from the high school to the end goal. However, there are some differences in tone. Mobius was a place to escape suffering, while Redo is being marketed as a place to escape regret. Redo also has a more religious bend than the idol theme of the first game.

3. What other links do the first and second games have to each other? People have been theorizing that Marie Mizuguchi/Wicked from the first game may return as Marie Amabuki (I think) in the second due to them having the same VA. There’s obviously the shared artstyle, symbolism, Catharsis Effect, glitchy NPC faces, and general setting. I also suspect that this game takes place after the events of Caligula 1. Not much I can say about this right now, but I wonder how everything joins up. Or if it even matters that they do. I haven’t seen too much on whether or not this game is being marketed as a standalone or a sequel, or if you even need to play Caligula 1 to enjoy Caligula 2.

Conclusion: While the Caligula series isn’t one I’d recommend to everyone, for the way it handles a number of sensitive topics, I will still be checking out Caligula 2 if it comes to the West. Though very little has been revealed thus far, so far I’m interested in the religious iconography used as well as the darker tone and colors presented in the game. As well as the characters, who have more varied and interesting designs including super unique weapons. I’m a bit disappointed that the plot, as it has been revealed, is an exact copy of Caligula 1′s plot, right down to the names of the protagonists’ faction. I was hoping for a bigger evolution to the story, but considering so little has been revealed in the first place, this may be a bit of a preemptive judgement.

Like I know you’ve posted some stuff about Nate and Zoe and even Venus but I’m really curious about everyone else!

I wanna preface this by thanking you for your patience since it took me forever to reply to this. I really appreciate it! <3

Anyways, those charts are divided into two parts — the first is Nate’s friend group (which I call the Zodiacs) and the second is the Celestial Council. The Zodiacs are central-focus characters while the Council’s role is more on the back burner.

I’ll talk about the characters individually under the cut, but if you’re not into summaries I’ll include a song that reminds me of each character since I think music is a fantastic personality descriptor:

ZODIACS

NATE SAGITTARIUS: Nate is an overly ambitious teenage boy who becomes a Regulator at the Venus Villas after discovering that he’s half elf. I’m sure you know the rest of this rant by now.

“Genius Next Door” — Regina Spektor

ZOE SAGITTARIUS: Nate’s punk-rock older sister, who is much cooler than he’ll ever be. Zoe is a dryad that was adopted by Jupiter Sagittarius shortly after she had woken up in a Bronx alleyway with a bad case of amnesia. Nowadays, she works as a Regulator at the Venus Villas and wields a talking snake shaped dagger named Sabik.

“OHFR?” — Rico Nasty

DANIEL ATKINS: As Head Regulator, Daniel Atkins is known to keep things in line. Daniel is an aloof ghost from the 1910s who hasn't matured much since his death. He’s notoriously bad with social cues and always says whatever he’s thinking, which Nate doesn’t seem to mind. The two of them quickly become best friends, much to Zoe’s dismay.

“Nobody” — Mitski

BRENDA ANTARES: With her competitive nature and innate sparing abilities, Brenda was the obvious choice for Mars’ Lieutenant. When she’s not assisting Mars, Brenda volunteers as a part-time cook at the Venus Villas. Brenda is a sweetheart who befriends anyone she can, which is ironic considering the fact that she shares a body with a temperamental demon named Aries.

“What’s Up Danger” — Blackway & Black Caviar

ANASTASIA CHERNOV: Not much is known about Anastasia’s past and she’d like to keep it that way, thank you very much. Anastasia Chernov is head general of Via’s Army and a recurring antagonist throughout the series. She is a blind vampire who, despite her overall brooding nature, loves cutesy magical girl animes and Vocaloids.

“Oh Ana” — Mother Mother

MAYBELLE SAVURI: Real hot girl shhh! Maybelle Savuri is a top-charting singer and model from the monster world who just so happens to be Venus’ daughter too. She’s a super rich vampire with shapeshifting powers, the cutest outfits, and confidence for days — what else could you possibly want?

“Girls in the Hood” — Megan Thee Stallion

LEO JEMBER: Resident golden boy and honorary funnyman, Leo Jember is one of the first friends Nate makes at the Villas. Leo is a (literal) angel who works the front desk at the Venus Villas, and spends his free time messing with his best friend Scorpius Singh. Leo is extremely popular with the workers at the Villas but he also has the tendency to push Venus’ buttons for fun.

“C7osure.” — Lil Nas X

SCORPIUS SINGH: The only Zodiac more secretive than Anastasia is Scorpius. Scorpius Singh is a witch cursed to kill everything he touches. Nowadays, his hands are constantly bandaged and he tends to keep his distance from other people. Around the Villas, Scorpius is known for his intellect and snippy attitude.

“Goodbye Mr A” — The Hoosiers

POLLY DE DIOS: Just like her father, Polly de Dios is a skilled inventor who helps with repairs around the Villas. Polly and her twin brother, Cas, are a pair of hyper-intelligent androids built by Mercury de Dios. Unlike her lax brother, Polly is a rule-abiding teenager with a love for list making and hard work.

“B.I.T.C.H” — Megan Thee Stallion

ALEX MILTON: Come through, daddy issues! Alex Milton is a blunt satyr who spends his free time committing petty crime. His tendency to use his powers in the mortal world often winds Alex in trouble with the Venus Villas. Despite his unpleasant nature, Alex is both humorous and intelligent… maybe that’s the reason Nate had a slight crush on him when they first met.

“Rich & Sad” — Post Malone

DAX LEE: Dax is good friends with Leo and Scorpius which, by default, makes him Nate’s friend as well. Dax Lee is a deaf merman who has the power to mind control other people whenever he sings. And while Dax may not be the smartest member of the Zodiacs, he certainly is the friendliest!

“This December” — Rick Montgomery

JEONG NA-RI: As a powerful psychic, Jeong Na-Ri is a force to be reckoned with. But after Nate accidentally frees her from a hundred-year imprisonment, Na-Ri quickly learns that the world she came back to is extremely different from the one that she left behind. Not only that but, with her immortal dad still around, Na-Ri now has a new step-mom and an older brother named Dax.

“Cartoons” — Louie Zong

CELESTIALS

**SOL JEMAL: As head of the Celestial Council, Sol plays a particularly important role in the monster world. Sol Jemal is an angel that has been around since the beginning of time so she’s pretty much seen it all by now. Her distant nature has caused an aura of mystery to form around her, but her sons Deneb and Leo reason that she’s not as omnipotent as she seems and, if anything, she’s just a bit uptight.

“YAH.” — Kendrick Lamar

MOON ATKINS: It doesn’t matter that they’re twins, Moon would like to make it perfectly clear that he is Sol’ older brother. (By five whole minutes!) While Sol is known for being the bringer of life, Moon Atkins was assigned the role of ruling over the dead. Because of this, Moon’s presence is seen as a bad omen in the monster world. However, Moon is quite the gentleman with an extreme interest in birds, particularly ravens.

“Lethargy″ — Bastille

MERCURY DE DIOS: The rest of the Council has the tendency to look over Mercury’s existence. Mercury de Dios is a gnome with a knack for inventing. He’s a genius when it comes to innovation, but has trouble when it comes to socializing with other people, so he avoids it completely by shutting himself in his workshop all day. When he’s not inventing, Mercury is either spending time with his children or trailing behind Venus and Mars around the Villas.

“Touch-Tone Telephone” — Lemon Demon

VENUS GALILEI: As both his boss and godmother, Venus spends a lot of time with Nate. Which is unfortunate for him, because while many other adults in the monster world think Nate is old enough to fight against Via’s Army, Venus adamantly believes that he is too young to get involved. Still, despite their many disagreements, the two care very deeply for each other.

“Glamorous” — Fergie

TERRA GALILEI: Nate’s not the only one with an adopted dryad sister. Terra Galilei is Venus’ younger sister who is head of human relations — meaning that she keeps in touch with the very few humans who know of the monster world. Unlike her sister, Terra is a loud party animal with a love for sports.

“Lightning” — Rico Nasty

MARS HUYGENS: Oh boy. Where to begin with Mars? Mars Huygens is a cyclops widely known in the monster world for his loudmouth and love of violence. He is one of the three Celestials who work at the Venus Villas — the other two being his spouses Venus and Mercury — much to the Regulators’ dismay. Despite his reputation, Mars gets along swimmingly with Brenda and, despite how often he teases the kid, has a bit of a soft spot for Nate as well.

“PRIDE.” — Kendrick Lamar

JUPITER SAGITTARIUS: Everyone in the monster world knows Jupiter as the elf who had a child with a human. Jupiter Sagittarius is Nate and Zoe’s music loving father who never really grew up. Jupiter supports his children in their endeavors, however he’s not quite qualified for his own responsibilities. Despite his scatter-mindedness, Jupiter puts a genuine effort into everything he does which, at the very least, is why his peers tend to like him so much.

“8TEEN” — Khalid

SATURN HAMILTON: With the exception of Mercury and Moon, no one in the Celestial Council really likes Saturn all that much. Saturn Hamilton is a workaholic satyr who is obsessed with the human world and its history. More often than not, Saturn finds himself butting heads with his eldest son, Alex, despite Saturn’s attempts to salvage their relationship as of late.

“Cemetery” — COIN

URI HERSCHEL: Uri is a man of few words… mostly because he’s a selective mute. Uri Herschel is an ice giant known for his eccentric nature — whether it be his odd choice of clothes or his peculiar love of taxidermy.

“Anklebiters” — Paramore

LEE NEPTUNE: Guess it’s time to release the kraken. Lee Neptune is a picture perfect beach dweller — a handsome surfer dude who plays the ukulele and has the ability to shapeshift into the legendary kraken. He may not be the smartest member of the Celestial Council, but he certainly is charming.

“Drunk Walk Home” — Mitski

PLUTO TOMBAUGH: While he’s technically no longer a part of the Council, Pluto will always have an honorary spot in these lists. Pluto Tombaugh is a laid-back and likeable dwarf who is obsessed with the animals that reside in the monster world — which he collects and studies in his downtime.

“Jawbreaker” — Injury Reserve ft. Rico Nasty & Pro Teens

**The surname Jemal is just a placeholder and will most likely change down the line.
