I don’t know who needs to hear this, but if you put the word ‘fuck’ or ‘fucking’ into your search terms on google, you don’t get the stupid AI answers at the beginning of your search. Look!
Before:

After:

Do with that what you will.

some thoughts on my relationship with entertainment and media now that AI is getting *convincing enough:
Now is the time to prioritize in-person, local, experience-based entertainment.
I will not watch any media produced after 2022, unless I can guarantee it was made without AI. And in general, I'll be consuming a lot less online content. AI is going to erode the already minimal trustworthiness of online content. Avoiding video format media especially in the upcoming years is going to be essential for avoiding misinformation (but navigating news in the AI age is for a different post).
My goal is to replace a lot of scrolling and video consumption with:
Local theater performances
Live music
Art galleries and museums**
Travel (even if that means walking to a park or going in a nature trail)
For those interested in also getting away from AI media, I'll expand on my list below.
Live theater
While you can find pretty pricey tickets for bigger shows, there's a lot of smaller theater groups that will do pretty cheap tickets. Even some local high school performances can be really well done! Also, where I grew up, during the summer a local group put on a "Shakespeare in the Park" series, which was Shakespeare plays done in the open air of a local park and it was free!
Live music
Like with theater, live music can get pretty pricey if you're looking into tickets for well-known artists. Check out what small music venues are in your area, or watch a gig at a restaurant or bar. Certain towns also have community symphony bands, and will do (usually free) performances for the community.
Art Galleries and Museums
Museums and galleries (and libraries!) are the love of my life. Some museums will have free days and some are just completely free, where admission is an optional donation. Libraries will host community events like lectures, practical skill classes like learning to sew, and of course book clubs. With our (US) libraries under attack right now, it's an especially good time to support them!
Travel
I'm using a very broad term here for basically getting out and doing anything and going anywhere that isn't your house/apartment/room. Going for a walk, visiting a park, taking a day trip to a town you've been meaning to visit, etc. It can even be as close as visiting a friend/relative.
~
Not only is this stuff going to help you avoid supporting AI monetarily, it will allow you to be more involved in the community that (hopefully) exists around you. It will also help keep money in the community instead of sending it directly to Silicon Valley tech bros.
A lot of these measures are preemptive and may seem like an extreme reaction, but I feel that AI will greatly shift the media landscape as we know it. Not only will AI video be indistinguishable from real video, but it will be seen by media execs as the cheap alternative to having to pay writers, actors, artists, etc. And it already is (if you've seen the "Don't Hire Humans" ad campaign).
*Much of social media is already riddled with AI, but up until now, it was pretty easy to distinguish AI vids if you knew what to look for. But if you stumbled across the recent AI ads or that weird "we're not just prompts" video, you know that the tells of messed up hands, jaunty movements, and morphing backgrounds are no longer effective at spotting AI. AI has improved significantly in the last few years, if you recall those vids where it couldn't even render a horse running, so I can't imagine how much more indistinguishable from reality it will be in another year or two.
**Some galleries and museums have put up AI based exhibits, either with AI images or using chat bots to interact with. It's really disappointing to see this in the art world, but it's just something to look out for!
Note: for those who may say "I don't have a park near me", "I don't have friends that live close" "I hate live music bleugh" "I'm bald", I'm very sorry for your situation. But you'll have to determine one of two things:
1) this post simply may not be actionable for you and that's OK. I'll see you around. Have fun on tumblr.com
2) You may have to find what works for your area, ability, and living situation. Researching what's around you is the first step.

The Met Used AI For Their New Costume Institute Exhibition And I'm Not Sure How I Feel About It.
breakdown:
How did they use AI? Was it in a capacity where they could have used human digital artists? The wording on the website makes it sound like they used both- whether anyone was put out of a potential job by it has a huge impact on how I feel about it. But that's not disclosed online
"We used AI and CGI to demonstrate how these fragile garments would move on a body!" you all will do ANYTHING but talk to real people who have lived experience of wearing similar clothing- many of whom are also museum professionals and historians! Historical Costumer and History Worker are not mutually exclusive! friendly reminder that Abby Cox and Nicole Rudolph and Cheyney McKnight and many others all work or have worked in this field professionally beyond the YouTube space, to say nothing of people like Ruth Goodman who do experiential archaeology fully outside of social media! -won't you like geez. I'd rather have a video of Nicole Rudolph spinning in a Worth replica you paid her to make and demonstrate than an AI holograph, personally
Any incursion of AI into the museum-space worries me deeply even though AI can't do my jobs within the field...for now. If we don't stand up for those first affected, we will all fall eventually, I feel. Even nonprofits aren't immune to cost-cutting measures, especially those that run on a shoestring budget as most of our orgs do.

You've never done that when I got close to you before. Why? None of your business. Tell me, or you can't leave.
KISEKI: DEAR TO ME Ep. 10
#kiseki: dear to me#kisekiedit#kdtm#kiseki dear to me#ai di x chen yi#chen yi x ai di#nat chen#chen bowen#louis chiang#chiang tien#jiang dian#uservid#userspring#userrain#pdribs#userspicy#userjjessi#*cajedit#*gif#every time i color this scene i get stronger. anyway there were so many expressions i just couldnt leave out. the deep breath ai di takes#steeling himself before admitting it. & the way chen yi absorbs it the way he blinks away & his mouth opens before focusing on ai di again#thinking about it. thinking about four years of attacks ai di had to withstand. understanding the way he is now but hating how its happened#and also the guilt hes gotta feel from that! & yet thats overcome in this moment by a need to not let ai di put a wall between them#which is what ai di keeps trying to do. he admits a vulnerable thing and then deflects FOUR TIMES in this scene. first when sleeping#& choking chen yi when woken(& avoiding when questioned abt it). second by dropping his guard & worrying when he finds chen yi injured#& twice more shown in this set. he has to shake it off he has to put his wall back up but his instincts are strongest & chen yi SEES them.#you can see the way ai di wants to relax into that hug. the way he just wants to BREATHE but instead uses those breaths to defend himself#he chooses to flirt hoping it'll make chen yi back off. hoping he'll stop asking him to be vulnerable. but chen yi knows his tricks now.#and hes not going to let ai di continue believing he doesnt CARE about him. its poetic the way he gives him a taste of his own medicine#like it's *strategic*. he watches and learns. he knows his own influence over ai di he knows that HE is ai di's weakness. it's..chef's kiss

Unironically think that each of the bros (+April) don’t actually get how impressive their feats really are so they just do what they do and on the off chance someone comments on those feats they all react like:
Tumblr media
#rottmnt#tmnt#rise of the teenage mutant ninja turtles#no but really#I love thinking that they’re actually way more prideful about the stuff that does not even hold a candle to their other feats#like yeah Mikey can open a hole in the space time continuum but that’s nothing have you TRIED his manicotti??#yeah Leo has outsmarted multiple incredibly intelligent and capable people AND knows how to rewire AI but eh did you hear his one liners?#donnie accidentally made regular animatronics sentient but that was an oopsie check out his super cool hammer instead#raph was able to fake his own death to save the entirety of New York and then be the one to bring about his brothers’ inner powers-#but forget about that did you know he can punch like a BOSS?#and April can survive and THRIVE against a demonic suit of armor alongside literal weapons of destruction as a regular human-#but her crane license is where it’s really at#(not to mention all the other secondary talents and skills these kids all just sorta have like - they are VERY CAPABLE)#honorable mentions in this regard go moments like#donnie ordering around an entire legion of woodland critters to create a woodsy tech paradise#or Leo being able to avoid an entire crowd’s blind spots in plain sight#and also being able to hold a pose without moving a millimeter while covered in paint and being transported no I’m NOT OVER THAT#Mikey casually being ridiculously strong and also knowledgeable enough about building to help Donnie make the puppy paradise for Todd#Raph literally led an entire group of hardened criminals like that entire episode was just#basically they’re all so capable????#and at the same time prone to wiping out at the most inopportune of moments#love them sm

seeing people be proud of being so overly dependent on chatgpt genuinely fucks me up because... the whole point of being human is to think for oneself, to enjoy creating and to have original thoughts. why would you be proud to outsource the one thing that ties us to our ancestors generations ago? why would you be proud to use something that causes so much ethical and environmental harm? are we collectively losing the things that make us human?

i switched to capcut to make gifs and it has an AI transcribing feature that is very confused probably by most things but especially by the accents in slow horses and i just wanted to share some of the most ridiculous transcriptions it came up with:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
real
Tumblr media
river: *walks into bathroom to find his grandfather holding a rifle standing next to an unidentified bloody corpse*
river: oh wow, i love it
Tumblr media
not enough people compliment river's tough balls, so he has to do it himself
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"these are bad people, river, please" = "it's about people, red police"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
spider's sister = a tall bitch, no wonder he hates her
Tumblr media
"don't show one to the head" = gunshot wound to the head
Tumblr media
Upshott's famed Lysol Well
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"how'd you know my y-fronts are nylon" = "as you know, my wife, france and nylon"
Tumblr media
"shut down slough house", either that or he's a surprise anti-shipper
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
DON'T BLOW YOUR CUPBOARD
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and some of the names it came up with:
catherine sandwich/catherine stylish, spanish/standard/sammy (standish), katrina (catherine), with a cart right/riverkat right, dave a cart right/david car ride, can't write/cart writes (cartwright), m my five, lamp/ma'am (lamb), passion (pashkin), the reason (louisa), marcus long bridge, surely (shirley), shirley dancer, minnie harper, selfie (duffy), the keyboard/the keeper (dickie bow), pop off (popov), ingrid tiani

Something that's been on my mind for a while is that a lot of artists have been struggling to find programs that work with their budgets. Adobe's prices are... infamous, to say the least, and there seems to be a sharp learning curve for the more affordable options. And if you're like me, you might not feel comfortable with pirating to get an art program that is out of your price range. So here's a list of free art/editing tools. Any options without links are either mobile apps or can only be downloaded on Macs: Options without ads or watermarks:
FireAlpaca (notes: while this is an art program at heart, it can also be used as basic photo editing software once you get the hang of it. There is also a blog dedicated to tutorials on how to use FA in case you get stuck)
Medibang (note: the aforementioned FireAlpaca blog has some information on this software as well)
Krita (note: also available as an app for android and Google devices)
Storyboarder (notes: not to be confused with "Storyboarder.AI". While this program does require your email address before downloading, it is safe to use as far as I know (but please use caution regardless))
Pixilart (notes: link leads to browser version, also available as a mobile app)
Audacity (notes: apparently, the company behind this software, Muse Group, have also created a separate, subscription-based AI-voice program. I am unsure if it uses AI in a way that is generally considered to be ethical, like SynthV does, or if it follows the trends typically expected of those kinds of applications. The reason that I include this information is that I want to give everyone the ability to make an informed decision about whether or not they want to use anything from Muse Group, as I know many users on this site are anti-AI. However, I also know that some of those users wouldn't mind using Audacity since downloading it wouldn't be giving Muse Group monetary support - hence why the program is staying on the list.)
Clipchamp (notes: there are also paid tiers for this program. It is also available in-browser and as an iOS app. Furthermore, please be aware that there are some optional features that use AI)
iMovie (note: also available as a mobile app on iOS devices)
DramaQueen (notes: this is a software used to write scripts for plays, movies, etc. While it does require you to fill out some information before downloading, as far as I am aware, it is safe to use (but as always, use your own discretion))
Options that do have ads, watermarks, or microtransactions
ibisPaint X
Sketchbook (notes: formerly known as "Autodesk Sketchbook". PC and Mac versions do exist, but you have to pay to download them)
Medibang Paint
Capcut (note: has optional AI tools).
Be sure to check what system requirements are necessary for each program, and be aware of their limitations before downloading (for example, many users report Clipchamp has a tendency to crash, while others seem to be able to use it fine). Also, please feel free to add on to this. I know I haven't even scratched the surface here, as I tried to stick to software that I've either heard of extensively or have used personally.

my uni is like "80% of students already use ai like chatgpt so we're going to offer all our students access to ai for educational purposes!" like yall are a bunch of fucking dumbasses. students use chatgpt to CHEAT and have it do their essays for them. you are literally saying that cheating and plagiarism are okay now.
