I always wondered if before Bucky got his memories back, if he ever expected other people without knowing why.

Like, he perk up when he heard heavy English or French accents? Did part of him just ache when he saw a group of guys laughing and enjoying each other's company? When someone brushed against him, did he turn around expecting someone else? And it's gone so quickly that he's not sure who he was expecting, but he's always disappointed.

Maybe when he was still the Winter Soldier, and they knew not to mention Captain America around him because that usually meant they would have to put him back in the chair, I wonder if they also had to learn to avoid things that reminded him of the commandos.

Was the Smithsonian exhibit hard because that was his life, and he doesn't remember it, and there's Steve, but also, oh... He knows them. God, he knows them.

Someone write me an AU where Steve and the howling commandos end up in the future and it's all of them that help break Bucky out of his conditioning. And originally, Shield is thrilled to have so many heroes back but after Steve and the others find Bucky, Shield starts to wish they had stayed back in their time.

Shield is only able to snag him after he's run into the the commandos and Steve a few times, mainly because he's disoriented and hesitating because he knows Steve and the others, and why does he know them?

And Shield wasn't going to really do anything to Bucky... just run some tests and study how Hydra actually made him, and sure, they know about the trigger words and maybe they would have said them but it would have been to study it, to better understand. And maybe they would have taken the arm from him and yes, they know it was attached in a way that would have been very painful to remove but it would have been a safety measure and they could have studied it. They wouldn't have hurt him... not on purpose anyway.

So the commandos and Steve break him out, still looking lost and acting like he should be in a cage somewhere deep and dark because he's all wrong, and like fuck are they ever going to leave him with Hydra or Shield.

No one besides them gets Bucky anymore.

Everyone else keep breaking or losing him, and it's gone on long enough.

“I’m sorry Leona.”  Sorry? He’s sorry? For what exactly? What small thing had the King done to him that could be solved with so flimsy a word? An “I’m sorry” doesn’t erase every instance where Leona had waited outside his father’s study just to catch a glimpse of the man, just to hear him speak, much less to say a kind word towards him. It doesn’t get rid of the ridicule or the gossip he, as a child, had to endure because everyone knew his brother was too busy being perfect and his father was too busy hating him to raise their voices in defense of him. An “I’m sorry” didn’t fix the fact his mother was dead.

Ruggie dipped his head forward, lips pressed tightly together. The plastic little card in his hands bent uselessly from the force of his grip on it. Did he feel bad taking it? No. No, instead what made his heart ache worse than any hunger pangs was the fact that his grandmother only wanted him to be happy. Happy meant security. Happy meant money in his warthog and his family fed. He’d hunt down every opportunity. Dog-pile on any prey. Snap any muscle or break any bones to make that dream, that vision happen. Nowhere in that image was there room for him, Ruggie knew that.  And that was just fine.
