How to Communicate with the Neurodivergent: A Quick Guide

1. Don’t assume negative intent. 2. Don’t focus on HOW it was said, focus on WHAT. Many of the neurodivergent can’t identify what tone they’re supposed to use NOR what tone they’re using. 3. Don’t respond to your INTERPRETATION of what was said; ACKNOWLEDGE what was ACTUALLY said and go from there. 4. Don’t look for subtext; there is none. 5. Don’t comment on the lack of eye contact and/or on their movements if you want them to be able to pay attention. 6. Take what was said at face value.

Conclusion

Items 1 and 6 are the most important, which is why they are placed where they are; build-up.

Assuming negative intent and then acting upon said assumption will only lead to misunderstandings, ruin relationships, and, potentially, traumatize the neurodivergent individual who is already doing everything they can to not be understood.

Don’t. React. Get clarification. We will tell you our intent.

May I suggest something for angst of maybe Jaime not really showing his sadness with his family about his Dad's passing because he wants to be strong for them but after speaking with one of the adults in his life (Bianca/Rocio, Nana, or Rudy) he kinda just breaks down and has to face those feelings.

Totally fine if you don't want to, I think whatever you come up with will be good 😊

I think (going by the movie) that Jaime is going to be pretty open to sharing his "normal" grief. The whole family lost someone after all, but at the same time, Jaime had that moment on the cusp of death with his dad... There's bound to be a lot of guilt and obligation wrapped around that. And he can't easily explain it in a way that makes logical sense to his law school brain.

It could easily get pulled in with the stuff I'm writing in the pimp my ride fic. Khaji is changing Jaime’s body for reasons it understands and can discuss (programming) and also reasons it doesn't understand and doesn'tknow howtocommunicate (fear for its host’s wellbeing). Jaime is stuck with Khaji, can't get rid of it with dying, bonded fully with it because of a message from his dead dad. He frre want his family to know all the weird body stuff happening (Milagro definitely calls it bug puberty when she finds out), doesn't want them to know that he's got a little bit of resentment towards the scarab his dad convinced him to bond with and thus a bit of resentment towards his dad. He's also got the angst of is he human, is he still himself, and if he is, will he stay that way? Jaime doesn't want to put that on top of his family's grief for his father and the stresses of life they're already dealing with.

Of course, the changes Khaji makes become more involved, and eventually, Jaime can't hide them anymore...
