It seems so long ago that I made this. It was January 5, 2020 when wildfires were raging in 4 places in the world that I cared about that I painted this and posted it. I felt pretty helpless but looked up some links where people could maybe donate. This was one of my most seen posts on Instagram. Originally l also posted the painting for sale on Etsy and hoped to donate a sum myself that way. It never sold and I lowered the price a while back. I was notified last night that someone bought it. PSA: Convalescence

Pity me explanation: I tore my hamstring tendon completely, and had surgery Tuesday to reattach it. Six weeks non-weight bearing with a brace and a walker. So, basically, I'm homebound and disabled. I can walker-limp myself to the bathroom and back to the reclining chair. Boo hoo. It is a sad story and I have never been dependent on others in my entire long life!

So, what have I learned from the amazing people who have come to my rescue?

Don't say, "Call me if you need anything." If the other person is chair-bound, she literally needs things all day every day. Like: getting tea, folding laundry, putting sheets on bed, moving meds from one room to another, letting dog out, letting dog in, washing dishes, putting dishes away, microwaving food, carrying food to the recliner, picking up dishes, sweeping up dust. All day, every day.

Try this instead: "What day would be best for me to come help you? How about Tuesday afternoons?" And then, just show up and do whatever needs doing.

Because it's a lot of bleeping stuff, all the time.

It's hard to fathom how much of daily living is simply moving something from here to there, until you can't move stuff.

A pivotal moment in changing your beliefs can lead to some big things. 🤲💪🌱 My story of how you should never believe that you are only one person and cannot make a difference. The strength of one voice CAN be heard. The actions of ONE person DO make a difference. 🤲💪🌱 These pictures show the result of approximately eight hours of work; spread over multiple days, by 4 people. This project started out with me by myself, half an hour here, half an hour there; strolling with my green bags and picking up bits of rubbish. I filled up my council approved bin that week too. Now; this project involves 4 people; 2 household trolleys and enormous boxes to hold the sheer volume of rubbish and recyclables we pick up. I'v started a drawer in my bedroom which i’m stocking full of things to give my roommates when they are upset. I’m really bad when it comes to people crying so I like having something on hand to give them to make them smile.

so far i’ve got Starbucks gift cards, chocolate, and small stuffed animals (an adorable giraffe, and I’m looking for a polar bear doll). i need to pick up stickers and maybe some soft scarves.
