Katniss tried to take Prim hunting exactly once, and it went about as well as expected - she failed to shoot anything and burst into tears when Katniss showed her how to skin a rabbit. On the way back they found a lost colt with an ear bitten off and a nasty set of claw marks on its flank. Katniss was happy to just leave it, but Prim insisted they nurse it back to health.

Thus began the long and turbulent relationship of Katniss and Buttercup. Mortal enemies to the bitter end, they've entered an uneasy truce only through their love of Primrose; Katniss promises not to shoot the damn thing, and he in turn tries to resist trampling her. (He'll still try to throw her off now and again, of course. A horse has his pride.)

Some Careers train their whole lives for the Games and score an 8 in training. Peeta walks in on lifting bags of flour and having two older brothers as his only training and gets the same score.

Peeta really was the most delusional person ever because he saw Katniss’ reaction to his possible death TWICE and still thought she was gonna turn out alright if he just died in front of her at the end of the Quarter Quell, like IDK what to tell you my guy you are blind

I can't stop thinking of an AU where instead of killing Lenore Dove, Snow has her arrested for her 'crimes' and sent to the capitol to become an avox. A fate that, to her at least, is probably much worse.

Maybe Snow has her work in the tribute center too. Every year she can see Haymitch, and he can see her, but they are not able to touch, or talk. No comfort, just a reminder of what you can't have.

It is a threat, how he keeps Haymitch in line. The reminder that he can, at any time, make Lenore Dove's life worse. Haymitch spends years and years trying to think of a way to get her out, to save her, and keeps coming up with nothing. At least until the main trilogy.

Wouldn't that be, like, the worst, most fucked up, and tragic AU?

Haymitch struggling to break the unspoken rules of the Hunger Games. Seeing opportunities to fight back but choosing not to, because it’s hard to cross that line.

He puts the knife back in the basket. He lets the Gamemakers charge for the access pipe. And he’s ashamed of it, because it isn’t fear of the consequences that stops him, but something internal inclined toward bowing down.

Because it takes conscious thought to make something ‘okay’ to do. To logic through why a rule is arbitrary, or to be fine with consequences—being a nuisance or a criminal, or to separate the rule from the moral implications. It requires active deconstruction, or very firm lines you refuse to cross, both of which require a lot of time and thought to do and form.

Without the time and practice, it’s difficult to do—difficult to do regardless—in the quick, immediate moment. And Haymitch feels ashamed, that despite his resentment for the Capital, his intentions of messing them up, he still hasn’t fully deconstructed.

I can't believe there are people who think Katniss and Peeta ending up together is boring or lame. Two people who were tributes in the same arena TWICE living out their lives together in peace is literally the greatest act of rebellion in the story.

Something about the moment when Silka is crying really speaks to me. We see Careers often as being bloodthirsty and brutal, and are told that they are raised that way from birth. Obviously, though, they’re children. Committing horrible acts, yes, but also witnessing horrors and losing friends and allies in awful ways. Silka knows that there are only three tributes left. Unlike Haymitch, she has no allies remaining. She’s a kid, all alone, trapped in woods full of things that will kill her. How many people had she killed up to that point? How many of her friends did she watch die? We spend so much time with the victors (and rightfully so, because their stories don’t end with the end of the games), but I often think of the ones who didn’t make it, and all the torture that they go through just to die in the end anyway.

Haymitch sees Silka crying under his and Wellie’s tree as a rare moment of district unity, and I see it as a moment where Haymitch really finds truth in the words: “remember who your real enemy is”.

Stuck on the reservation, listening to the elders' stories of the old ways roaming the great plains, it's no wonder Howling Gale has little patience for the white men who claimed their lands and is so frustrated by Rains Fall's pacifism. Still, despite the wild temper he was named for, he's a charismatic and thoughtful young man who loves nothing more than exploring the last fragments of wilderness his homeland has to offer. He also has a knack for tinkering and likes to keep his hands busy; often he can be found improving the tribe's traps and weapons or carving wooden toys for the children.
