⭐ So you want to learn pixel art? ⭐
🔹 Part 1 of ??? - The Basics!
Edit: Now available in Google Doc format if you don't have a Tumblr account 🥰
Hello, my name is Tofu and I'm a professional pixel artist. I have been supporting myself with freelance pixel art since 2020, when I was let go from my job during the pandemic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My progress, from 2017 to 2024. IMO the only thing that really matters is time and effort, not some kind of natural talent for art.
This guide will not be comprehensive, as nobody should be expected to read allat. Instead I will lean heavily on my own experience, and share what worked for me, so take everything with a grain of salt. This is a guide, not a tutorial. Cheers!
🔹 Do I need money?
NO!!! Pixel art is one of the most accessible mediums out there.
I still use a mouse because I prefer it to a tablet! You won't be at any disadvantage here if you can't afford the best hardware or software.
Because our canvases are typically very small, you don't need a good PC to run a good brush engine or anything like that.
✨Did you know? One of the most skilled and beloved pixel artists uses MS PAINT! Wow!!
🔹 What software should I use?
Here are some of the most popular programs I see my friends and peers using. Stars show how much I recommend the software for beginners! ⭐
💰 Paid options:
⭐⭐⭐ Aseprite (for PC) - $19.99
This is what I and many other pixel artists use. You may find when applying to jobs that they require some knowledge of Aseprite. Since it has become so popular, companies like that you can swap raw files between artists.
Aseprite is amazingly customizable, with custom skins, scripts and extensions on Itch.io, both free and paid.
If you have ever used any art software before, it has most of the same features and should feel fairly familiar to use. It features a robust animation suite and a tilemap feature, which have saved me thousands of hours of labour in my work. The software is also being updated all the time, and the developers listen to the users. I really recommend Aseprite!
⭐ Photoshop (for PC) - Monthly $$
A decent option for those who already are used to the PS interface. Requires some setup to get it ready for pixel-perfect art, but there are plenty of tutorials for doing so.
Animation is also much more tedious on PS which you may want to consider before investing time!
⭐⭐ ProMotion NG (for PC) - $19.00
An advanced and powerful software which has many features Aseprite does not, including Colour Cycling and animated tiles.
⭐⭐⭐ Pixquare (for iOS) - $7.99 - $19.99 (30% off with code 'tofu'!!)
Probably the best app available for iPad users, in active development, with new features added all the time.
Tumblr media
Look! My buddy Jon recommends it highly, and uses it often.
One cool thing about Pixquare is that it takes Aseprite raw files! Many of my friends use it to work on the same project, both in their office and on the go.
⭐ Procreate (for iOS) - $12.99
If you have access to Procreate already, it's a decent option to get used to doing pixel art. It does however require some setup. Artist Pixebo is famously using Procreate, and they have tutorials of their own if you want to learn.
⭐⭐ ReSprite iOS and Android. (free trial, but:) $19.99 premium or $$ monthly
ReSprite is VERY similar in terms of UI to Aseprite, so I can recommend it. They just launched their Android release!
🆓 Free options:
⭐⭐⭐ Libresprite (for PC)
Libresprite is an alternative to Aseprite. It is very, very similar, to the point where documentation for Aseprite will be helpful to Libresprite users.
⭐⭐ Pixilart (for PC and mobile)
A free in-browser app, and also a mobile app! It is tied to the website Pixilart, where artists upload and share their work. A good option for those also looking to get involved in a community.
⭐⭐ Dotpict (for mobile)
Dotpict is similar to Pixilart, with a mobile app tied to a website, but it's a Japanese service. Did you know that in Japanese, pixel art is called 'Dot Art'? Dotpict can be a great way to connect with a different community of pixel artists! They also have prompts and challenges often.
🔹 So I got my software, now what?
◽Nice! Now it's time for the basics of pixel art.
❗ WAIT ❗ Before this section, I want to add a little disclaimer. All of these rules/guidelines can be broken at will, and some 'no-nos' can look amazing when done intentionally.
The pixel-art fundamentals can be exceedingly helpful to new artists, who may feel lost or overwhelmed by choice. But if you feel they restrict you too harshly, don't force yourself! At the end of the day it's your art, and you shouldn't try to contort yourself into what people think a pixel artist 'should be'. What matters is your own artistic expression. 💕👍
◽Phew! With that out of the way...
🔸"The Rules"
There are few hard 'rules' of pixel art, mostly about scaling and exporting. Some of these things will frequently trip up newbies if they aren't aware, and are easy to overlook.
🔹Scaling method
There are a couple ways of scaling your art. The default in most art programs, and the entire internet, is Bi-linear scaling, which usually works out fine for most purposes. But as pixel artists, we need a different method.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both are scaled up x10. See the difference?
On the left is scaled using Bilinear, and on the right is using Nearest-Neighbor. We love seeing those pixels stay crisp and clean, so we use nearest-neighbor.
(Most pixel-art programs have nearest-neighbor enabled by default! So this may not apply to you, but it's important to know.)
🔹Mixels
Mixels are when there are different (mixed) pixel sizes in the same image.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here I have scaled up my art- the left is 200%, and the right is 150%. Yuck!
As we can see, the "pixel" sizes end up different. We generally try to scale our work by multiples of 100 - 200%, 300% etc. rather than 150%. At larger scales however, the minute differences in pixel sizes are hardly noticeable!
Mixels are also sometimes seen when an artist scales up their work, then continues drawing on it with a 1 pixel brush.
Tumblr media
Many would say that this is not great looking! This type of pixels can be indicative of a beginner artist. But there are plenty of creative pixel artists out there who mixels intentionally, making something modern and cool.
🔹Saving Your Files
We usually save our still images as .PNGs as they don’t create any JPEG artifacts or loss of quality. It's a little hard to see here, but there are some artifacts, and it looks a little blurry. It also makes the art very hard to work with if we are importing a JPEG.
Tumblr media
For animations .GIF is good, but be careful of the 256 colour limit. Try to avoid using too many blending mode layers or gradients when working with animations. If you aren’t careful, your animation could flash afterwards, as the .GIF tries to reduce colours wherever it can. It doesn’t look great!
Tumblr media
Here's an old piece from 2021 where I experienced .GIF lossiness, because I used gradients and transparency, resulting in way too many colours.
🔹Pixel Art Fundamentals - Techniques and Jargon
❗❗Confused about Jaggies? Anti-Aliasing? Banding? Dithering? THIS THREAD is for you❗❗ << it's a link, click it!!
As far as I'm concerned, this is THE tutorial of all time for understanding pixel art. These are techniques created and named by the community of people who actually put the list together, some of the best pixel artists alive currently. Please read it!!
🔸How To Learn
Okay, so you have your software, and you're all ready to start. But maybe you need some more guidance? Try these tutorials and resources! It can be helpful to work along with a tutorial until you build your confidence up.
⭐⭐ Pixel Logic (A Digital Book) - $10 A very comprehensive visual guide book by a very skilled and established artist in the industry. I own a copy myself.
⭐⭐⭐ StudioMiniBoss - free A collection of visual tutorials, by the artist that worked on Celeste! When starting out, if I got stuck, I would go and scour his tutorials and see how he did it.
⭐ Lospec Tutorials - free A very large collection of various tutorials from all over the internet. There is a lot to sift through here if you have the time.
⭐⭐⭐ Cyangmou's Tutorials - free (tipping optional) Cyangmou is one of the most respected and accomplished modern pixel artists, and he has amassed a HUGE collection of free and incredibly well-educated visual tutorials. He also hosts an educational stream every week on Twitch called 'pixelart for beginners'.
⭐⭐⭐ Youtube Tutorials - free There are hundreds, if not thousands of tutorials on YouTube, but it can be tricky to find the good ones. My personal recommendations are MortMort, Brandon, and AdamCYounis- these guys really know what they're talking about!
🔸 How to choose a canvas size
When looking at pixel art turorials, we may see people suggest things like 16x16, 32x32 and 64x64. These are standard sizes for pixel art games with tiles. However, if you're just making a drawing, you don't necessarily need to use a standard canvas size like that.
What I like to think about when choosing a canvas size for my illustrations is 'what features do I think it is important to represent?' And make my canvas as small as possible, while still leaving room for my most important elements.
Imagine I have characters in a scene like this:
Tumblr media
I made my canvas as small as possible (232 x 314), but just big enough to represent the features and have them be recognizable (it's Good Omens fanart 😤)!! If I had made it any bigger, I would be working on it for ever, due to how much more foliage I would have to render.
If you want to do an illustration and you're not sure, just start at somewhere around 100x100 - 200x200 and go from there.
It's perfectly okay to crop your canvas, or scale it up, or crunch your art down at any point if you think you need a different size. I do it all the time! It only takes a bit of cleanup to get you back to where you were.
🔸Where To Post
Outside of just regular socials, Twitter, Tumblr, Deviantart, Instagram etc, there are a few places that lean more towards pixel art that you might not have heard of.
⭐ Lospec Lospec is a low-res focused art website. Some pieces get given a 'monthly masterpiece' award. Not incredibly active, but I believe there are more features being added often.
⭐⭐ Pixilart Pixilart is a very popular pixel art community, with an app tied to it. The community tends to lean on the young side, so this is a low-pressure place to post with an relaxed vibe.
⭐⭐ Pixeljoint Pixeljoint is one of the big, old-school pixel art websites. You can only upload your art unscaled (1x) because there is a built-in zoom viewer. It has a bit of a reputation for being elitist (back in the 00s it was), but in my experience it's not like that any more. This is a fine place for a pixel artist to post if they are really interested in learning, and the history. The Hall of Fame has some of the most famous / impressive pixel art pieces that paved the way for the work we are doing today.
⭐⭐⭐ Cafe Dot Cafe Dot is my art server so I'm a little biased here. 🍵 It was created during the recent social media turbulence. We wanted a place to post art with no algorithms, and no NFT or AI chuds. We have a heavy no-self-promotion rule, and are more interested in community than skill or exclusivity. The other thing is that we have some kind of verification system- you must apply to be a Creator before you can post in the Art feed, or use voice. This helps combat the people who just want to self-promo and dip, or cause trouble, as well as weed out AI/NFT people. Until then, you are still welcome to post in any of the threads or channels. There is a lot to do in Cafe Dot. I host events weekly, so check the threads!
⭐⭐/r/pixelart The pixel art subreddit is pretty active! I've also heard some of my friends found work through posting here, so it's worth a try if you're looking. However, it is still Reddit- so if you're sensitive to rude people, or criticism you didn't ask for, you may want to avoid this one. Lol
🔸 Where To Find Work
You need money? I got you! As someone who mostly gets scouted on social media, I can share a few tips with you:
Put your email / portfolio in your bio Recruiters don't have all that much time to find artists, make it as easy as possible for someone to find your important information!
Clean up your profile If your profile feed is all full of memes, most people will just tab out rather than sift through. Doesn't apply as much to Tumblr if you have an art tag people can look at.
Post regularly, and repost Activity beats everything in the social media game. It's like rolling the dice, and the more you post the more chances you have. You have to have no shame, it's all business baby
Outside of just posting regularly and hoping people reach out to you, it can be hard to know where to look. Here are a few places you can sign up to and post around on.
/r/INAT INAT (I Need A Team) is a subreddit for finding a team to work with. You can post your portfolio here, or browse for people who need artists.
/r/GameDevClassifieds Same as above, but specifically for game-related projects.
Remote Game Jobs / Work With Indies Like Indeed but for game jobs. Browse them often, or get email notifications.
VGen VGen is a website specifically for commissions. You need a code from another verified artist before you can upgrade your account and sell, so ask around on social media or ask your friends. Once your account is upgraded, you can make a 'menu' of services people can purchase, and they send you an offer which you are able to accept, decline, or counter.
The evil websites of doom: Fiverr and Upwork I don't recommend them!! They take a big cut of your profit, and the sites are teeming with NFT and AI people hoping to make a quick buck. The site is also extremely oversaturated and competitive, resulting in a race to the bottom (the cheapest, the fastest, doing the most for the least). Imagine the kind of clients who go to these websites, looking for the cheapest option. But if you're really desperate...
🔸 Community
I do really recommend getting involved in a community. Finding like-minded friends can help you stay motivated to keep drawing. One day, those friends you met when you were just starting out may become your peers in the industry. Making friends is a game changer!
Discord servers Nowadays, the forums of old are mostly abandoned, and people split off into many different servers. Cafe Dot, Pixel Art Discord (PAD), and if you can stomach scrolling past all the AI slop, you can browse Discord servers here.
Twitch Streams Twitch has kind of a bad reputation for being home to some of the more edgy gamers online, but the pixel art community is extremely welcoming and inclusive. Some of the people I met on Twitch are my friends to this day, and we've even worked together on different projects! Browse pixel art streams here, or follow some I recommend: NickWoz, JDZombi, CupOhJoe, GrayLure, LumpyTouch, FrankiePixelShow, MortMort, Sodor, NateyCakes, NyuraKim, ShinySeabass, I could go on for ever really... There are a lot of good eggs on Pixel Art Twitch.
🔸 Other Helpful Websites
Palettes Lospec has a huge collection of user-made palettes, for any artist who has trouble choosing their colours, or just wants to try something fun. Rejected Palettes is full of palettes that didn't quite make it onto Lospec, ran by people who believe there are no bad colours.
The Spriters Resource TSR is an incredible website where users can upload spritesheets and tilesets from games. You can browse for your favourite childhood game, and see how they made it! This website has helped me so much in understanding how game assets come together in a scene.
VGMaps Similar to the above, except there are entire maps laid out how they would be played. This is incredible if you have to do level design, or for mocking up a scene for fun.
Game UI Database Not pixel-art specific, but UI is a very challenging part of graphics, so this site can be a game-changer for finding good references!
Retronator A digital newspaper for pixel-art lovers! New game releases, tutorials, and artworks!
Itch.io A website where people can upload, games, assets, tools... An amazing hub for game devs and game fans alike. A few of my favourite tools: Tiled, PICO-8, Pixel Composer, Juice FX, Magic Pencil for Aseprite
🔸 The End?
This is just part 1 for now, so please drop me a follow to see any more guides I release in the future. I plan on doing some writeups on how I choose colours, how to practise, and more!
I'm not an expert by any means, but everything I did to get to where I am is outlined in this guide. Pixel art is my passion, my job and my hobby! I want pixel art to be recognized everywhere as an art-form, a medium of its own outside of game-art or computer graphics!
Tumblr media
This guide took me a long time, and took a lot of research and experience. Consider following me or supporting me if you are feeling generous.
And good luck to all the fledgling pixel artists, I hope you'll continue and have fun. I hope my guide helped you, and don't hesitate to send me an ask if you have any questions! 💕

Tumblr media
Once again I have found myself watching through the entirety of the 2000's Nickelodeon show from Cartoon Network alumnus Rob Renzetti, MY LIFE AS A TEENAGE ROBOT.
The show was an immediate favorite of mine as a child and it has a lot of staying power as a piece of animation thanks to its visual style, themes, characters, and sense of humor. It's honestly one of if not my favorite cartoon and I wanted to get some people interested and give them some confidence while watching it. Usually these days people make skip lists for shows, that will probably be the smallest part of this post but I still wanted to give people recommendations and tell them what to look for and expect.
This list will help you find the GOOD EPISODES, GENDER EPISODES, and BAD EPISODES. I will also be providing a link to where to watch it for free below the read more.
As of writing this post the entirety of My Life As A Teenage Robot is available for free at pretty decent visual quality over at archive.org. This is how I rewatched the show.
The first suggestion comes for WATCH ORDER. This one is easy, the episodes are ordered as they should be aside from Escape From Cluster Prime parts 1 & 2 (Season 2x09a & b, as listed in the archive.org playlist) which you should watch after having finished the rest of season 2 first.
Season 3 of MLAATR comes out after the events of this special episode so don't save it for the very end.
Now for Content Lists. There are a few categories I'm making lists for. To make this easy keep in mind that pretty much every episode (EXCEPT THE LAST) of this show is totally watchable, even when they aren't great. So these content categories will come with the added modifier that if I think they're VERY GOOD I will highlight them GREEN, and if I think they're BAD I'll highlight them RED. I'll talk about my favorite episodes after we get through these.
GENDER/BODY IMAGE CONTENT
For a lot of you I imagine this is why you're here. Jenny has become a bit of a transgender icon for trans women who watched cartoons in the 2000's. I do want to preface this by saying Rob Renzetti has gone on record saying this was not his direct intention but that he is supportive of the interpretation and as a trans woman I find Jenny's struggles very relatable and in some ways as an autistic person she hits a lot closer to home than other canon trans characters.
So if you want to just watch a couple episodes just to get a shot of gender struggle so you can point at the screen and tell your friends "see! I told you Jenny was trans!" this list will have that. I am also including general body image content on this list because I think that's very relatable for but not exclusive to the struggles of trans women. Any body image centric content on this list will have BI listed after it.
"It Came From Next Door" 1x01a
"Pest Control" 1x01b (BI)
"Raggedy Android" 1x02a (
"The Great Unwashed" 1x06b (BI)
"The Return of Raggedy Android" 1x07a
"Hostile Makeover" 1x09a (BI, and it also makes a great case for puberty blockers imho)
"Tradeshow Showdown" 1x12b
"Victim of Fashion" 2x01 (BI)
"Humiliation 101" 2x03b (BI)
"Weapons of Mass Distraction" 3x01a
Season 1 definitely has the most to do with Jenny's self image, so you'll find it coming up in various episodes. It becomes less apparent as the seasons go on due to Jenny building self confidence.
SHELDON CONTENT
The chaser of the show. Not everyone hates Sheldon, but his crux as a character is being a creep/nerd who doesn't take no for an answer. I think at times his utter depravity as a toaster fucker and the butt of jokes works so I tolerate him for the most part but the way the show plays with his role/the possibility him and Jenny could get together is very Cringe/Cringe Comedy. He also sort of turns into the "gay friend" role in later seasons, which I'm sure a certain kind of person could dig into what that means for the themes of this show. Anyway, here's just a heads up for what episodes center Sheldon if you hate him or love him (???????).
"Attack of The 5½ Ft. Geek" 1x03a
"Ear No Evil" 1x04a
"Shell Game" 1x10b
"Saved By The Shell" 1x12a
"Love 'Em Or Leash 'Em" 2x04a
"A Robot For All Seasons" 2x05
"Dancing With My Shell" 2x07a
"A Pain In My Sidekick" 2x09a
"Designing Women" 2x10a
"Escape from Cluster Prime" 2x13-14 (I mean... he's IN IT... but don't skip this one)
"The Price of Love" 3x06b
"Good Old Sheldon" 3x07b (had this been the last episode with Sheldon in it, my opinion on him would improve greatly)
"Infectious Personality" 3x08a (this episode is mostly just weird)
"Agent 00' Sheldon" 3x09a
Silver Shell stops showing up in season 3. Also by season 2 Sheldon gets a lot of furry/pet play content so... do with that as you will.
SHIPPING CONTENT
Here's a list of some episodes if you're working on fics and need a reference. These eps are focused primarily on supporting whatever argument you're trying to make and I'll try to be impartial in this. Also I'm not really gonna do side characters.
"Hostile Makeover" 1x09a (Jenny x Brad)
"Saved By The Shell" 1x12a (Jenny x Sheldon)
"Love 'Em Or Leash 'Em" 2x04a (Jenny x YK9)
"Bradventure" 2x11a (Brad x Melody)
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Troubles" 2x12b (Jenny x Misty)
"Escape from Cluster Prime" 2x13-14 (Jenny x Vega)
"No Harmony with Melody" 3x02a (Brad x Melody)
"Mist Opportunities" 3x05b (Jenny x Misty) (primarily in conflict however)
"The Price of Love" 3x06b (Jenny x Sheldon)
"Agent 00' Sheldon" 3x09a (Jenny x Sheldon)
"Ball and Chain" 3x11a (Jenny x Brad)
OFFENSIVE
Okay, so what in this show do I think is bad or could offend people? Well, several of the cartoons show other cultures in a way that could be considered derogatory. This is again going to be me trying to be objective because I'm just some white girl who can't make the call for a lot of these, and a lot of these are issues in episodes I like.
"Speak No Evil" 1x05b (Japanese people depicted with yellow skin)
"Around the World in Eighty Pieces" 2x07b (Various cultures depicted in caricature such as the middle east and japan)
"Samurai Vac" 3x13a (SKIP, this one I feel pretty confident in saying the depiction of Japan is offensive and reductive. I also just think this episode is mostly bad and weird? The characterization of Jenny doesn't feel like her at all. The episode after it "Turncoats" isn't really worth a watch either, so you can call your watch through after Queen Bee.)
AVA'S FAVS
Here are the episodes I really like that I think you should definitely give a look! I will mostly be focusing on a few that haven't been mentioned here unless I think they're so good they need to be brought up again.
"It Came From Next Door" 1x01a (Obviously we've been here before, but the first episode of this show is solid enough that even if you just want to watch one episode, the first episode I think can do that for you)
"Raggedy Android/Return of Raggedy Android" 1x02a & 1x07a (These are just two episodes that work well together as dialogues with Jenny's self image/relationship with femininity and they get pretty creepy with it too!)
Various Great Season 1 eps: "Class Action" "Doom With a View" "Unlicensed Flying Object" "The Great Unwashed" "The Boy Who Cried Robot" "Grid Iron Glory"
"The Wonderful World of Wizzly" 1x13a (Rob Renzetti hates Disney part 1)
"Victim of Fashion" 2x01 (Jenny's outfits in this episode are VERY GOOD)
"Mind Over Matter" 2x02b
"Around the World in Eighty Pieces" 2x07b
"Mama Drama" 2x11b (Jenny is a terror)
"A Spoonful of Mayhem" 3x04a (ACAB)
"Girl of Steal" 3x05a (They managed to make their "don't steal" episode very funny and not preachy)
"Indes-Tuck-tible" 3x09b
"Historionics" 3x10b (Rob Renzetti hates Disney part 2)
"Voyage to the Planet of the Bikers" 3x12a
CONCLUSION
My Life As A Teenage Robot is a really exceptional show that I think should be remembered as more than just the vehicle for Jenny's introduction into the world. As an adult watching this show I really can't get over the art. The character design, the shading, the backgrounds, their commitment to drawing crowds as various different character styles. It really was a show that was going for it's style and it cohered very well. The humor also stands alongside other successful comedic shows like spongebob handily. As an adult, the sort of nerdy humor with fewer annoying bits works better for me than going back and watching a lot of cartoons.
As an adult I think I also appreciate how much the show was going for "dealing this situations." Obviously the show has morals for kids, but I think a bit thing it was going for was just showing characters dealing with tough/ridiculous scenarios. The show DOES stuff TO its characters giving what are very simple characters a chance to shine.
It's also very fun to see a character build confidence and earn the forgiveness of people. Obviously the world is unfair to Jenny but at it's core I think it shows a world that cares about her and can appreciate her just as much as it can anyone else. Despite standing out, Jenny is as much appreciated as she is derided. I really loved getting to see the life Jenny had to live, and I hope you do too.

heyyy I'm new to digital art, would you mind sharing some tips regarding programs and tutorials and etc? also on how to turn a real life piece into a beautiful and clean digital piece... really love your art
oh good luck with your art journey! my experience with digital art is pretty dated (as in a decade + levels dated) and i might be too out of touch to give beginner tips but regardless, allow me to attempt
Programs: it would help to know which hardware you have for digital but ill put down some i have experience in 1. Clip Studio Paint Pro - PC/Android/ipad/everywhere i think? unfortunately they betrayed humankind and its now a subscription everywhere but on PC. i bought a one-time license years years years ago on sale and its probably the best available on my end. I also got it on subscription on android so i can sync works between my PC and tablet. its very flexible in a way that you can draw with it in the most basic way single layer sketches or whatever but they have so many features and keep adding more.
2. procreate - ipad only never been an apple user but my friend is, and he's been a procreate user forever. he recently tried CSP on ipad though and he still claims he likes procreate better for ease of use and compatibility with tablet ergonomics and apple pen
3. medibang paint - pc/android/ipad
free forever. and out of all the free programs i recommended my other digital art newbie friend this is what he liked best.
4. adobe photoshop - dont even look at this the only reason i have one is im leeching off company license. its still unfortunately the industry standard tho but CSP is much cheaper and has the same controls and most of the basic functions 5. Paint Tool SAI - my first art program but i haven't tried it again. honestly still think this has the best brush flexibility and pen pressure control ----- As for tutorials, i find digital art has such a steep and high skill ceiling and its a challenge im still tackling and probably will forever tackle haha. I'm trying to osmosis painting techniques from splash art painters from League of Legends who most of them post complete timelapses (my favorite being Bo Chen) where you can study not just their techniques but like, art directions that make their pieces striking. Anyway, I also promised a friend I would make a simple coloring tutorial so maybe after inktober hustle, I would look for a piece there I'd use for the guide.
---- Traditional to digital is never a satisfactory process to me but if you can, invest on a scanner. I use an epson v39, had it for years.
Tumblr media
scanned vs edited. the goal is to at least get the white of the paper as white as possible and the blacks the blackest, without whitewashing/burning the rest of the colors. Level correction function is your best friend here and most art programs have that.
Tumblr media
Then i just clean dust and errors and slide the contrasts around until it looks as close to the original piece
If you have a decent phone camera, you can get away just posting instagram aesthetic pics with materials framing it or smth and just edit as usual. natural light tends to be a lot more forgiving than the harsh light of scanners anyway.
Tumblr media
Anyway I hope this helps and have fun learning!

Re: your post about downloading music to ur phone and listening offline - you have no idea how strongly i feel about this. I have never made the switch to spotify i carry my phone and its 1.4k songs with me wherever i go.
1. If you have an android phone you can get youtube revanced which allows you to use all the features of yt music (listening with screen turned off or while navigating to another app, no ads) without paying. Lmk if you want more info on that
2. You can absolutely download music from youtube and store it on ur phone somewhere (get an extra sim card if built in storage isn't enough), unfortunately spotify has become such a default that some phones don't come with decent mp3 player apps. My (xiaomi redmi) default one is pretty good once i found the "no ads no internet searching" button but if yours sucks you can look into external apps
3. As for how to get mp3s of songs: I'm sure there's still YouTube-to-mp3 websites and software and you can look for a good one, but personally I've switched to the more time intensive but ultimately more reliable method, which is playing whatever song i want on desktop and then hooking up my audio recording software (audacity) to an app that kind of acts like an internal microphone and speakers, so that i can record the sound directly. Again I'd be happy to give more info if that's something that sounds good to u. I love this method cuz it allows me to record from any source i please and edit stuff before saving
Oh and i should mention all of this can be done at no cost, I'm only using free apps and software
Thank you so much for the assistance! :D I really appreciate all of the detail you went into! 🌟 Neither of us has made the shift to Spotify 🤝
I used a combination of your 2nd and 3rd suggestions, avoiding the question of YouTube-to-MP3 converters by sticking to song files that I had already converted. It seems to be working well so far! ^_^
Again, thank you so much for helping me out! 🎶 I am all set to listen to music in the immediate future, and in the long term, I may work on expanding and polishing my music library C:

16^12, a nucleus of worldview (6/?)
Tumblr media
Continuation upon this loose thread.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I got a new dream onto the intertextual implications, history doctorate-tier narrative components & overall intrigue of my books' narrative. And it boils down to something somewhat similar to Tolkien's works as a nuanced, mysterious, profound but yet optimistic, empowering & introspective complete cosmic-scale GLOSS* history epic about the cycle of life versus entropy, coming-of-age, constructing meaning in bleak times & about all sorts of """autistic""" patterns.
What that means is that I have a clearer perspective & direction of what plot points could be around the core series of books and how to reuse what other good things come from what I shall write soon. And while still taking into account some key world building parameters to keep this narrative realm timeless-ly useful, I now know what overall intrigue for the core duo of characters (aka "Kate" the human INTJ historian lady & "Valenz" the ENFP synthetic-tier android social assistant + syndicalist vigilante) is gonna feel like (a escalation of power, of worldly understanding & of individual self-control);
And while they still have to overcome systemic issues & bring forth constructive change, I think adding this very spiritually metaphysical, honest nuanced yet hopeful, constructive & affirmative aspect will really enrich the paracosm long-term appeal & the intertextual relations derived from such, especially considering all the historical & mythological heritage that I am tying it with (such as the Bronze Age period, World War 1, Thirty Years War, Abrahamic Mythos...) going both backwards, forwards and sideways in time.
Granted, I do have some personal worldview values to transmit, some opinionated tools to use & so much additional research & iterative work left to be done in order to reach the one planet cyclic universal history scope thing I am onto, but rest assured I will find S.M.A.R.T ways to distribute the risks & rewards of this endeavor into edible chunks of data as well as leave a decent share of open space / mystery to do as you please (within ethical consensus bounds) inside that paracosm framework of ours.
Very abstract, ain't it? Well, I will pace more specific explanations for it out in due time as I figure things out as the open book I really am inside. Farewell to soon!

Postmodernism and the Birth of the Author in Philip K. Dick's Valis
Just as Aliens and Androids "threaten reduction of what makes life valuable, yet promise expansion or redefinition of it," so do gods.
deities threaten humans by absorbing them into a unity, a state in which differentiation is cancelled-just as differentiation is cancelled by the mechanical, whose process is routine and whose products are replica
Very often and powerfully in Dick's writing, entropic degradation is associated with becoming merged, becoming unified.... [on the contrary, as in valis, a split of self is needed and employed to make sense, or reverse the entropic demise]
So it is with A Scanner Darkly: the reduction of social life to oneness (in which we would all have the same phone number and be subject to a single law prescribing the same punishment), the convergence of dopers and cops in their practices and institutional attitudes, the drug rehab facility become drug factory staffed by brain-dead drug addicts
recurrent depiction of a failure of differentiation
Dick values that which is unassimilated-unassimilated into the mechanical and collective, into an oppressive society, into a single godhead, into entropy
What I have called differentiation and variation can by the time of Valis be seen as a splitting: the death of the subject. It is not difficult to see Valis as pursuing the same danger-fraught dialectic of differentiation and unification
Philip is watching helplessly over Fat as Fat endangers himself by these obsessions. In addition, since Philip and Fat are the same person, his friends watch helplessly over him, powerless to heal what had begun as narrative convenience ("I am Horselover Fat, and I am writing in the third person to gain much-needed objectivity" [?1:3]), and then blossomed into schizophrenia
This complicated set of repetitions and mirror images revolves round a simple, pure ethical challenge: the challenge to pity. Can one move from feeling something for others to doing something for others [aha! skip, perhaps, to FAT24, and no longer will tears be known, let alone sympathy, let alone empathy, let alone, alone, alone... action]
It retreats into textuality. At least, I shall now argue that Fat's dealings with the divine, which occupy so much of the novel, should be described as a retreat into textuality
An example: in chapter 7 we discover not only that one person has become two in Fat and Philip, but also that Fat himself is re-split (98). Fat and an early Christian named Thomas simultaneously inhabit his self. As the speculation is pursued, attention shifts to Christ ("We are talking about Christ….We are talking about interspecies symbiosis"), and it is determined that Christ and Elijah are the one person (101). Attention quickly shifts to Philip.4 Recounting a dream, he realizes that he (like Thomas/Fat, like Christ/Elijah) is split, simultaneously living as himself and his lost father.
As we read, we lose the propositions in the process. The information that Fat is really Fat/Thomas is given no chance to stagger us because it is replaced by (rather than developing into) the speculations about Christ and about Philip. Corroboration becomes corroboree.
Nothing is fixed or centered: that is the point conveyed by the exasperated misapprehension of Maurice (another therapist) that Fat has not read Genesis.s In fact he has read Genesis all too often. If you feel free to discard Genesis's account of creation, why keep to Christianity at all (as Fat persists in doing)? Fat's version of Christianity is so decentered that Maurice falls into the mistaken belief that he is ignorant of it.
If his theories are corroborated, he is faced with the grim prospect of conclusion. It is possible that the God whose presence is being confirmed is dangerous: "When you know this you have penetrated into the innermost core of religion. And the worst part is that the god can thrust himself outward and into the congregation until he becomes them. You worship a god and he pays you back by taking you over. " This god who absorbs humans into himself, obliterating difference
'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''';'''''''''''';';'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''';;'''
; in this discursive universe, subject, author, God, and reader circle each other in antagonistic interdependence.
The narrative is concerned with the discovery and understanding of the phenomenon-the acknowledging of it, we might say. But here what is shocking for the reader is the author's admission that he believes in Valis, or rather, Philip K. Dick's admission that he believes in it. This is a literary effect, not dependent on the knowledge that many of the incidents to be found in Valis and Radio Free Albemuth are recounted and analyzed as events in Dick's life in his Exegesis and in many interviews
The story (the series of illuminations or visitations, and the series of ruminations on them in which the group of friends engage) gets itself told, while the "truth" of Valis is left in quotation marks, and responsibility for it is placed on the shoulders of the suffering, split-off Horselover Fat. Fat, for his part, plunges into the hectic flow of speculation which was characterized above as a retreat into textuality
But the possibility that is allowed to grow, to vary, and to permute while this suspension and postponement is in place, is best defined neither as the possibility that Fat is right nor as the fact that Philip and Fat are one person, but rather as the possibility that Philip K. Dick believes in Valis. By this somewhat shocking or embarrassing tactic, the novel defeats our attempt to defend ourselves by saying that it is only a novel.
iThis novel denies its fictionality, but without allowing us to recapture it for fiction by labelling the denial as a sign of its realism. The focus is not on reportage and/or ordinariness, as in traditional realist fiction, but on the way the author offers his belief to validate the extraordinary (Valis) that is set amid the Orange County quotidian.
Dick does not merely write about simulacra but makes a simulacrum-a fake (the whole fiction) presented as reality (228). But it's the manner in which the novel is presented as a not-fake that is disconcerting. To do what Jouanne describes is indeed to follow the modernist road: in response to the ever-increasing, insidious, and tentacular capture of art by commodity, one makes a progessively more spikily artful and sophisticatedly fake-ish work of art. Dick is doing the reverse: it is the literalism that breaks through the reader's weariness with contemporary hyperreality and with art's attempts to exceed it
The novel suggests that if the postmodern condition poses a difficulty for its subjects (readers, characters, authors, and deities alike), then this is that difficulty.

I've been doing a decent job writing a little bit about every book I've read over the past couple years and I'm feeling rather down that due to the circumstances and torments, I've yet to write anything about these reads:
35 The Element of Fire (Martha Wells)
36 The Disabled Tyrant's Beloved Pet Fish: Volume 2 (Xue Shan Fei Hu)
37 The Break (Katherena Vermette)
38 Ballad of Sword and Wine: Volume 1 (Tang Jiu Qing)
39 An Uncommon Murder (Anabel Donald)
40 The Husky and His White Cat Shizun: Volume 6 (Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou)
41 The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy 2018
42 The Burning God (R.F. Kuang)
43 Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (Philip K. Dick) [reread]
44 Case File Compendium: Volume 1 (Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou)
45 Marks of our Brothers (Jane Lindskold)
46 Guardian: Volume 3 (priest)
47 The Seventh Veil of Salome (Silvia Moreno-Garcia)
48 Unsouled (Will Wright)
49 Convenience Store Woman (Sayaka Murata)
50 Case File Compendium: Volume 2 (Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou)
51 Mammoths at the Gates (Nghi Vo)
52 King Rat (China Miéville)
53 The Shadow of the Sun (A.S. Byatt)
I took last week off so that number jumped significantly, something which could be deduced by an average detective in seeing free books in my house (kitchen counter, dining room table, randomly in the bedroom, table by the couch, table by the green chair).
It doesn't matter to anyone but me; as in all writing it can only ever be for me and this is, I suppose, the advantage of writing without an audience; no expectations or obligations.
But I disappoint myself, I suppose.
As always, I disappoint myself.

Part 3 Entertainment - Apps Part 1
I can't imagine I'll have much in the way of apps for you, because the Google Play store is a pit of despair that you cannot browse, but if I come across something I think might be useful, I'll happily share it.
Any apps I'd profile here would have to be:
For Android (somewhat obviously)
Either free or low-cost (I'm willing to pay single digits for a game I already know that I like and will meet all of the other criteria on this list, but not really much more.)
Says it doesn't share data with third parties and collects and accesses no more data than is reasonable for the features that it has. (A game with payments does need to have access to certain things, as does a game that allows you take pictures).
Always plays offline or can be played offline. I don't about anyone else, but I've never been stuck waiting ANYWHERE with decent wifi. I'm always in the waiting room that has no connection.
The somewhat obvious way to go with something like this is to purchase the cell phone port of a game that was released for NES/SNES/Sega Genesis. I used the tail end of a Play giftcard to buy the cell phone port of Dragon Quest II (Apple), a game that I've played so many times that I don't need access to a walkthrough and cost me like 2.60 after using my gift card balance. I doubt that's of much interest to anyone besides me, though, but several other similar games have cell phone ports if you know of one you think you would enjoy.
This tumblr post, however, got me interested in Simon Tatham's Puzzles (Apple), which has 40 logic puzzles in a single app (the Apple version has 38, your guess is as good as mine), including Sudoku. Does it have the best graphics? No. Will it run when I have no cell reception? Yes.
I'm looking through some of the other suggestions in that thread and seeing if any other apps are worth mentioning.

Hi, so ive been working on a writing project for awhile now and the first chapter is soon to be ready to release (Yay) sooo id thought id post a few design things and explain world building a bit. In this post I will be detailing 1. The main setting and 2. The main race interacted with during the first chapter
Ill be honest i dont have a name for this project yet and have just been calling it “my sci fi” project in everything ive laid out so far. But everything else has names! So here is the map of the mensis star system, most importantly of its ring station/world thing that surrounds and orbits the star mensis. This giant space station was once habited by a race of prestigious fleshed based organisms called the yeltilore. (most commonly they are called either “bringers of light, soon to arrive once more” by the theocratic council of the lenier. Or by more common names, such as “precursors” “the old rotten fleshy bits we find in district 5 floating through space” or my personal favorites “those dudes who died”) they as the common names suggest *died* or “disappeared to the star to recharge their power” a long long long time ago, leaving their robot and android slaves (and their experiments) behind within the 15 districts of the metliru ring station, all of them changed, district five got hit by a small exoplanet that got trapped it metliru’s orbit, and is no longer safe for any intelligent being. And over time all of the robots made their own civilization, colony’s, and just generally gained free will, now only somewhat bound by the harsh rules of their precursors and the much harsher rules of their own governments.
Notable species include:
Lenier, once robotic servants now wirey messes that form bodies and develop complex thought, who will be detailed later
Felar (who show up later)
The horrors (who show up later)
The flesh born (who show up later)
And the rogues, bestial androids once kept as pets that now roam any and all unclaimed territory, feasting on metal and despite a lack of intelligence theyve developed a fierce pack like instinct
Tumblr media
Now, more on lenierians
Tumblr media
These dudes are fun, having been small robot slaves during the reign of the past, they ripped apart other such robots (and a lot of infrastructure) during their early days, adding their stolen wiring to themselves in order to look more akin to the precursors who came first. They developed a religious fervor to the guys who died, building their entire religion based government off of the idea that 1. The star mensis is the only star in existence (all windows they have aboard the ring face the star) and that the precursors simply went into the star in order to achieve godhood, and eventually they’ll come back and reward they’re devote with the same godhood. Sadly however, since the destruction of district 5 they where disconnected to any space ports unless they went all the way around, stopping any potential suicides into the star.
They live wherever is safe and function decently well as a society, decorating themselves with scavenged metals by melding them into their metal bits and just kinda existing, they have jobs, their trying to fix up their homes to not be derelict and they’re learning, like doing science and shit. Point is. Youll see a lot of these dudes especially since (at least) one of the main characters is in fact a lerian!
If you want more functional info on their design decypher my bad cursive, now have a good night
(Also, i know the science in this is flimsy at best, its much more fantasy than anything else, as a robotics nerd im sure all of my friends would be mad at my for these designs and as a science geek…i mean same, the idea of a giant ring around a sun as a world is slightly more absurd than a dyson sphere and i know that, most of the inspiration was one of my friends talking about the game stellaris and building rings around planets/stars and the idea of everything else flowed from that, ill be making more of this before the release of the actual first chapter. Which will be on AO3. Now goodnight! (P.s. please ask any world-building questions id love to answer them!)
