But, things changed in late 2021 with the emergence of omicron, which still reigns supreme today. According to the data, an infection with omicron provided an initial protection of nearly 80 percent between the first three to six months after infection, but that protection rapidly declined. Between nine months and a year, protection fell to around 27.5 percent, then dropped to a negligible 5 percent after a year.

US Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has fired all 17 members of a panel of vaccine experts advising the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The move is the most far-reaching in a series of actions by Kennedy to reshape US regulation of vaccines, food and medicine. Kennedy is a known vaccine skeptic. This weekend, Fox News published an op-ed from Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in which the longtime anti-vaxxer and current secretary of the United States Department of Health and Human Services appeared to take a more nuanced view of the MMR vaccine in light of the recent measles outbreak in Texas that recently led to the death of an unvaccinated school-aged child. “All parents should consult with their healthcare providers to understand their options to get the MMR vaccine. The decision to vaccinate is a personal one. Vaccines not only protect individual children from measles, but also contribute to community immunity, protecting those who are unable to be vaccinated due to medical reasons,” he wrote, which was not great, but a slight improvement over “VaCcIneS cAuSE AutIsM!” But given the seriousness of the outbreak — and the fact that some families are even responding to it by holding measles parties — it’s not enough. Especially since Kennedy also stated that “Good nutrition remains a best defense against most chronic and infectious illnesses. Vitamins A, C, and D, and foods rich in vitamins B12, C, and E should be part of a balanced diet.”

And you know what? Elizabeth Warren was not impressed. The op-ed inspired the senator to write RFK Jr. a letter in which she accused him of already not living up to the promises he made in his confirmation hearing to “maintain the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices [(ACIP)] without changes” and to “base vaccine recommendations on data-driven, evidence-based, and medically sound research.” Specifically, Warren pointed out that he has “already begun planning to replace members of ACIP” and postponed their first scheduled meeting with him; that he “cancelled the next meeting of the Vaccine and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC)” at which they were meant to discuss what strains of the flu should be included in next year’s flu vaccine; and that he had already announced that the HHS is considering pulling funding for a bird flu vaccine.

it's extremely critical that you see the photo of the perp walk for luigi mangione as being propaganda. i've seen so many people wave it off and instead fawn over his looks. and trust me, i know it ended up being kind of pathetic and weird - but please don't brush it off as a "modelling opportunity" for him. it's a fucking terrifying message the police are sending.

i want to make a few comparisons here, in case you're not from the US or familiar with why the perp walk thing is something to pay attention to. just to set the groundwork for why this is a purposeful, unusual, and cruel act by the nyc police - for why this is not a common occurrence and for why that matters.

the prosecution alleges the show of force is due to the charge of "terrorism." for comparison, in june 2015, tsarnaev was found guilty for the boston marathon bombing, which killed 3 people and injured hundreds. his actions are considered to be an act of domestic terrorism. i have spent the last hour looking through google for pictures of similar to mangione's perp walk - and so far, i have found zero. i also just do not personally remember a moment like that, despite living in boston at the time.

they allege that luigi is a stone-cold killer who carried out a longterm plan, making him particularly dangerous. again for comparison: in nyc, recently cory martin was found guilty of the killing of brandy odom. the murder was planned and premeditated to steal insurance money. and yet no staged perp walk. why didn't her life matter enough for a "show of force"?

but mangione gets paraded by a veritable army of police officers as if he is a rabid animal. for a single citizen who allegedly killed one other single citizen, the "largest perp walk ever" occurs.

so what is the "strong message" that the mayor and the police were trying to send here? the mayor speaks as if mangione is already convicted of terrorism. there is a very thin number of people who feel threatened by the CEO's death. none of us felt like mangione needs to be under massive armed guard.

the message is that you shouldn't resist. they are trying to "make an example" of him - that if you behave badly and kill a single rich person, you'll be treated as if you killed hundreds of people. you will be treated worse than a man who was found guilty of terrorism. you will be considered guilty without trial. the message is that the rich are a protected class, and you cannot touch them without massive punishment. they are trying to prevent a revolution by showing dominance and force against you.

the message is that the police are a puppet of the wealthy and that the law is not equally applied across class disparity. it is "some are more equal than others." it is "one life is more precious than another."

the show of force wasn't for luigi. it was for us. it was a warning. they are trying to remind us who is really in control.

A landmark study published in The Lancet has revealed that childhood vaccination programs have saved an estimated 154 million young lives worldwide over the past 50 years. This tremendous global achievement is credited largely to the World Health Organization’s Expanded Programme on Immunization, which has vaccinated over 4 billion children against diseases such as measles, polio, tuberculosis, and tetanus. The campaign has seen a 75% reduction in the number of “zero-dose” children — those under one year of age who have never received even a single dose of the diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine.

Described as one of the most cost-effective public health strategies, childhood immunization offers an impressive financial return, up to 44 times the cost of investment. Yet, despite these benefits, the momentum behind global immunization efforts has been waning in recent years, raising concerns among public health experts.

Barriers to Progress: Pandemic, Conflict, and Misinformation

Between 2010 and 2019, at least 21 out of 36 high-income countries experienced a decline in one or more types of routine childhood vaccinations. More broadly, essential immunization rates fell in over 100 countries during the same period, according to Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance. These setbacks contributed to resurgences of diseases like diphtheria, polio, and yellow fever.

The COVID-19 pandemic further disrupted vaccination efforts, with the number of zero-dose children peaking at 18.6 million in 2021 before slightly decreasing to 15.7 million in 2023. However, experts caution that the pandemic is not the sole cause. Political instability, armed conflicts, climate-related disasters, population displacement, and a growing wave of vaccine misinformation have also undermined global immunization programs.

In 2019, the World Health Organization named vaccine misinformation as one of the top threats to global health. The study’s authors emphasize the need for targeted strategies to address these diverse challenges, tailored to the specific social and political environments of affected countries.

Shifting Political Agendas Threaten Future Gains

The United States, long a major supporter of international childhood vaccination campaigns, may see significant changes under proposed political leadership. Former President Donald Trump’s 2026 budget proposal aims to defund key global health initiatives, including the CDC’s international vaccine programs and funding for Gavi. His appointment of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a known vaccine skeptic, to lead the Department of Health and Human Services has also raised alarm. Kennedy has questioned the need for COVID-19 vaccines in children and pregnant women, and replaced CDC vaccine advisors with figures linked to misinformation campaigns.

Although the majority of U.S. parents continue to value routine childhood vaccines, recent data from the CDC show that exemption rates among kindergarten students have reached record highs in the 2023-24 school year, with some areas exceeding 5%.

Globally, the largest populations of unvaccinated children are found in eight countries: Nigeria, India, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan, Indonesia, and Brazil. Experts argue that the path to the WHO’s goal of 90% global childhood vaccination coverage by 2030 will require renewed investment, localized outreach, and an aggressive push to counteract vaccine misinformation.
