🦊💔 In Memory of Mikayla Raines, Founder of Save A Fox
I don’t have the words—but I’m trying. Mikayla was more than just a figure in the rescue world. She was a wife. She was a mother. She was a colleague. A friend to many. A force. And now, her death is a devastating loss and a gut punch to those of us who’ve stood in the fire that is animal rescue.
Mikayla died by suicide earlier this month.
And part of what led her there?
The harassment. The cruelty. The targeted online takedown campaigns—many of them launched by people claiming to care about animals.
Over the past few years, Mikayla became the subject of serious accusations posted on sites like Reddit (notably the now-private r/SaveAFoxSnark) and Tumblr. These claims alleged abuse, neglect, and unethical behavior at her rescue. Some of the worst included:
That animals died in her care due to neglect
That she “supported” the fur industry by buying foxes from fur farms
That she prioritized social media content over actual animal welfare
And even extreme, completely unfounded claims of sexual abuse of animals
Let me be clear: there is no verifiable evidence supporting any of these accusations. No investigations. No lawsuits. No veterinary reports. No credible whistleblowers stepping forward. Just anonymous posts, speculation, and harassment amplified by online mob mentality.
Yes—foxes died in her care. Because she rescued them from fur farms and hoarding situations where their health was already compromised. That’s the hard truth of rescue: we don’t always get to save them all. But we try. With everything we have.
Yes—she purchased foxes from fur farms. It’s controversial. But it’s not rare. Many rescuers pay out of pocket to save animals from slaughter when surrender isn't an option. These foxes were born in captivity. They couldn’t survive in the wild. Her choice was life or death.
Yes—she lost her license in one city. In 2017, Lakeville, Minnesota pulled her permit for housing more foxes than allowed. She raised $60K, moved to a larger facility, and kept going. That's not abuse—that's resilience and resourcefulness under pressure.
Mikayla lived with autism, depression, and borderline personality disorder. Her husband, Ethan, shared that she was deeply sensitive and deeply hurt by the rumors and cruelty. And sadly, that pain became too much.
This tragedy doesn’t just belong to her family or her followers. It belongs to all of us in the rescue community. Because this is what unchecked cruelty and performative “accountability” can lead to. We lost someone who dedicated her life to giving voiceless creatures a chance.
This isn’t about idolizing Mikayla. It’s about calling out the toxic culture that turns baseless accusations into weapons. That feeds on controversy and tears people down under the guise of justice.
Please—before you share a post, join a dogpile, or believe a thread, look for truth. Look for proof. We owe that to each other.
To every rescuer out there who’s tired, who feels targeted, who’s questioning if this fight is still worth it—you are not alone. You are not the only one hurting. And your work matters more than the noise ever will.
Mikayla’s legacy should be the thousands of foxes she saved. Not the cruel rumors that tried to define her.
Let’s honor her with compassion. Let’s protect each other better.

Day 50– Gerudo Desert
Promises are kept, food is made, and monsters resettle in their ecological niches. And so the arc comes to a close, with our heroes riding away into the dusty afternoon.
(End of the Lightning Arc)
(This totk au is called Familiar Familiar! It all starts when Zelda doesn’t get sent back in time and the butterfly effect devolved from there.)

One of the socialist things I’d like to see ALONG WITH UBI (not instead of) is a government option for all basic neccesities. I am aware that the government option would -suck- and as long as it’s survivably functional, I’m fine with that. When I was a kid, we got monthly commodity food boxes. They’d be filled with food that looked like this:
Tumblr media
And in lean months, it would be that and whatever we could get from the garden, or forage/fish, or trade with friends and neighbors. My mom had this awesome recipe for peanut butter balls that utilized the powdered milk, shit-quality peanut butter, and maple-flavored corn syrup that we routinely got in our box and actually made it good.
I think that these things should be available for purchase at every supermarket, and that the prices should be fixed with relation to the minimum wage. All brands should have to compete with the government option - if SPAM is going to be more expensive than LUNCHEON MEAT in the silver can, then it needs to justify that cost by being better quality.
I want the same thing for housing. I want fucking Commie Blocks to be an option.
This would combat runaway inflation by putting a price cap on survival needs. It would guard against shrinkflation, because a consumers could compare the Government Standard portion to the brands. UBI ought to be such that it covers The Government Option for food, housing, clothing, transit etc. with generous wiggle room for emergency savings and little joys in life.
Everyone should get their own UBI account in their own name at birth, along with their social security number. It should follow the individual regardless of guardianship. Parents/guardians should have incrementally less and less control over said funds as the child gets older, and should have to provide itemized receipts of how money taken from a child’s account is spent (Similar to what you have to do if you’re in control of an elder’s social security money).
https://www.ssa.gov/ssi/text-repayee-ussi.htm
'Each year, we will ask certain representative payees to complete a Representative Payee Accounting Report showing how they spent and saved the money they received for you during the 12-month report period.'
These are steps that would could easily institute tomorrow be reallocating funding, and they’d have a huge impact on cost of living for everyone.
This rant brought to you by the fact that store brand canned luncheon meat in my local grocery held fast at a dollar for the better part of two decades but now costs $2.18.

i forget if i've mentioned this before on here, but when i was about 5 i was obsessed with monsters inc and watched it at least twice a week not because i especially liked it as a movie but simply because i was passionately in love with randall. and in fact the very first fanfiction i ever wrote was a monsters inc whump fanfiction about me finding randall in the swamp after he got beaten up with a shovel and tenderly nursing him back to health. all this to say i have been the person i am from an incredibly young age

thinking about how they said grover was affected the most out of everyone bc he was alone and how nico and bianca stayed for 70 years inside that hotel and didn't forget each other bc they were always within reach and how that little detail makes their story even more devastating bc they got through it together and the moment they got out they get separated and then bianca never comes back

listen there really was just something about how in the book, snow’s 3-page descent from hesitant lover boy to deluded mfer happens entirely in his mind. lucy gray gives him no indication whatsoever that she suspects him, that she’s going to leave or betray him. he’s just sitting quietly in the cabin waiting for her to return when that seed of calculated suspicion, which he has needed to survive the capitol, takes a hold of him and chokes the life out of any goodness left inside him. it really drives home your terror as a reader that “oh my god did he kill her? did she escape? what happened to her? why would he even think that?” in a way that when the movie had to adjust for visualization it lost some of that holy shit this guy has lost it emphasis.
#seeing some discourse and im not saying lucy grey didnt know#im saying she never dropped the kind of hints that she knew like she did in the movie#or if she did snow isnt worried about them until he very suddenly is consumed by them#snow is not concerned about whether or not she believed him. of course she did! hes snow!#but then shes gone…. for a while……#and its the sudden immediate drastic unravelling that comes across so clearly in the book#that i knew wouldn’t translate to screen yet still cant help but miss#the hunger games#coriolanus snow#tbosas#lucy gray baird#not a crime or anything just a note that i cannot stop thinking about#the ballad of songbirds and snakes#this is all from memory of reading it quite a while ago. so maybe 3 pages is an exaggeration#but i remember it happening VERY quickly and without much external cause#like we as the reader have no indication as to whether shes nearby or not.#snow has no idea either. he just SUSPECTS. and his suspicion breeds the hatred that has been bubbling inside him all this time#he hates how she undoes him. he hates that he WOULD run away with her if shed let him keep his secrets#and he HATES more than anything that she makes him WANT to tell his secrets#he wants to be vulnerable and reveal the ugly nasty parts about himself and still be loved#but he does not let himself and it is everyone’s downfall#he chooses cruelty bc it is easy and familiar and makes him feel more powerful than the vulnerable give and take that real love requires

I’m rewatching supernatural, and I can’t believe I never realised this before, but sam and dean are the exact opposite of what they think of themselves. In the brothers’ eyes Sam is the more emotionally open one, or the one with more empathy, and yet he struggles to make close relationships that aren’t romantic. He keeps everyone at arms distance: john, mary, bobby, cas, and so many other examples throughout the series. Whereas dean is supposed to be closed off and emotionally stunted, and yet he has deeper connections with almost all recurring characters: garth, jody, donna, claire (obviously the ones mentioned before). He lets people in more easily than sam. Even how he knows all the shopkeepers in lebanon, whereas they don’t seem to know sam (ie 14x13).

The way Glinda looks at the statue and she throws the torch so quickly to burn it, I think it wasn't just that she was pretending to be ok with people celebrating Elphaba's death but because she hates this image of Elphaba. She hates the "Wicked Witch" because she knows that this is not who Elphaba was. She'll never see her friend again but this image will stay, even though it's not true. And she tells the story hoping that someone will understand.
