Howdy friends! This is my first real go around at writing in a very very long time! So please excuse any errors or inconsistencies! If you have any tips or criticism my DMs are open! The reader is a smaller female in my head because small/tall relationships go brr. Use of (Y/N)! Thank you and enjoy!

You hated being in Valentine. The people, the smells, the entire place was just something awful. Your only salvation from this god forsaken town was your traveling companion for the day, Arthur. Traveling and doing Pearson’s errands with him was always easy. Conversation could flow and stop with ease between you and him. So, well in fact you had to ask yourself if you were sweet on the cowpoke. Looking over at him you start shaking your head of any thoughts of the man. The last thing you needed was to get distracted. With a final shake you follow Arthur into the last stop of the day. The bounties board in the sheriff's office.

“Seriously?” you say to the big-bellied sheriff. “This is all you have to offer?” You gesture towards the bounties board with postings all less than $25.

“Yes, ma’am the only other bounties worth something are his and yours.” The sheriff gestures towards Arthur and you vaguely. “But I won’t say nothin because y’all are the only two keeping this godforsaken place safe.” “Plus, I ain’t doing all that paperwork for an outlaw and a pyro.”

You turn on your heel at the mere mention of your past and leave the building in a rush before Arthur can start asking questions. However, he is far bigger than you are and towers before you in two strides stopping your escape.

“You have a bounty on your head (Y/N)? I would’ve never guessed.” He drawls almost in disbelief. “No offense but you don’t look like the kind of girl to do much of anything let alone a crime.” “How much is it anyway?” He teases flipping the top of your hat up to see your face. “100? No $500?” He teases with a smile.

As you slowly look up at him meeting his blue eyes and smile you try to as nonchalantly as possible say your bounty amount.

“$6,000 last time I checked was the price on my head.”

Arthur’s smile falters as he looks you up in down in disbelief.

“No way in hell is your bounty higher than mine. Stop pulling my leg (Y/N).” He awkwardly chuckles.

Sighing you reach into your bag pulling out the bounty poster you pulled down of yourself less than a year ago. Looking away as you hand it to Arthur.

“No fucking way.” The cowboy whispers looking at you. You see a million questions run by as his thoughts turn to find the politest way to ask you for lack of a better term what the fuck.

Before he can even form a word to inquire about your bounty you put your hand up in a quieting gesture.

“Not here Arthur. Please. I can tell you as soon as we get out of town but not here.” You plead with the outlaw in both your words and expression.

“Fine, but you better tell me why in the hell a little girl has a bounty higher than mine” he says saddling up on his horse.

“I am not a little girl Arthur.” You snap.  Catching your tone you soften up. “I’m almost as old as you are.”

“Could’ve fooled me with how itty bitty you are!” He laughs on his high horse both physically and metaphorically. You see his attempt at breaking the tension in the air and appreciate it.

You can’t help but sigh and roll your eyes a smile tugging at your lips as you saddle up your horse, Hermes.

As you head back to camp you can’t help but feel nervous as to how telling your story might change everything. But until you are at camp you just enjoy the feeling of the wind in your hair like you did all those years ago when you fled the pile of ash that was once your home.

let’s begin the experiment

When you first start Xenoblade 2, you assume it is going to be disconnected form the first one. It's a spiritual successor really, not a sequel. But then, you notice something. Small at first, ever so small. Maybe a line of dialogue, maybe a familiar enemy type. You have the barest hint of what is going on, thinking maybe there might be something more there, but you leave in the back of your mind. So you continue on playing, and more and more inconsistencies start adding up. You see things that shouldn't be. Malos has a monado, and the then there is the vision in Spirit Crucible Elpys, seeing the world engulfed in light only as you have but once before. The gears are turning, but still you don't quite know yet. Then, you venture through Morytha, and up the World Tree. More and more, a picture is forming in your mind that scares you. The reeks of implications you can't quite comprehend and are not sure if you want to, and then finally, after you kill Amalthus, there is but one place to go. You enter the elevator, and head up. The scene dims, and suddenly you see a set unlike any before in the game. People, dressed so out of place for Alrest, but would fit right in on Earth. They are rushing, panicking, and desperate. You don't know who they are or what they want, but because only one thing they say stands out. "We've been locked out by Professor Klaus" Suddenly, you understand. You see what you have seen before, on another side of the story. Everything that has been building this entire game leads to this point. This one moment where all becomes clear. And throughout this revelation, where you see the world killed in light and born anew, knowing what will come from this choice, the music continues on, desperate and pleading telling the story of this fateful choice. The strings and piano beg you listen, but can't change anything. All they can do is draw you in further, to watch this fateful "Decision"

Okay yeah obligatory Irish Goodbye mention. There's so many islanders and he gets distracted so easily, if he says goodbye to everyone he's gonna get stuck in 600 more conversations and he'll never leave the Whatever he's at when he intends to.

Also obligatory: He will genuinely enjoy the gathering to its fullest but he will still be on high alert. He cares for every single islander no matter how infrequently he sees them, which means while he's still immersed in the get-together, he remains vigilant to ensure nothing can harm anyone, ESPECIALLY when there are eggs present. The banquet with the fake eggs really reinforced this.

The above is why, especially while everyone is just bantering before the real event begins, Phil will perch up high on and off and just observe everyone chatting. He's on the lookout, making sure no one is vanishing inexplicably or worse, being taken. Keeping mobs and other threats away when necessary.

When encountering strangers, he plays it cool, he's very kind and engaged. But he is observing the shit out of the person. Analyzing them, their body language, forming an impression of their Normal, their Default state, so in the future he can tell when they're off.

Hilariously his memory is ass sometimes so it takes A Few "first" impressions for him to really ingrain in his brain how a person generally is.

Once he determines your vibes check out and you're a neat person, he's ride or die. No man left behind when it's Us vs The Feds in his eyes. You need something? He's got you unless you'd rather do it yourself.

When it's not an islander though... He'll put on a nice face, he'll stay civil if they're civil first. But truthfully, he is Not interested in the stranger whatsoever, ESPECIALLY if it's a new Fed worker. Then he's straight up suspicious. It takes a lot longer to determine whether or not they're a threat, if they're worth being bothered about, or if it's fine to live and let live.

The capybaras are excluded in the above though, he fucking loves those funky guys he wants to see them more often. He loves that they're so invested in helping him get cool pictures and stuff.

He LOVES new islanders. It's fun to watch the initial impressions, seeing who bonds with who most, joining them in picking their place to set up home, and checking in in the future to see how their new abode is coming along and how they're settling in. Honestly? It's partially that Hardcore Historian brain, he loves discovering what's been built in his absence.

When he's stressed, a lot of the above goes out the window, or becomes inconsistent at least. He's no longer observant for protection, he's observant out of fear; especially for himself. He perches almost always, or never stays in one spot for too long. He gets tunnel visioned. He really doesn't want to socialize at all. He dislikes being caught not in his best shape and he can get very paranoid and self conscious about it.

Btw he sometimes has the social awareness of a fucking grape so like. If you have an issue with him, please say so. Please communicate. He's a birdbrain boy in a birdbrain world ok. Tunnel vision and ADHD go brr.

Sometimes he socializes with birds the same way he does people. Just whole ass short conversations. Usually when he's bored and lonely.

He's down to socialize literally any time. The one time he probably Doesn't want to be bothered, at least not very often or for long, is when he's Eggza doing task grinding or resource gathering.

He hates being out of the loop of things because he has no idea what to do or say when a crisis arises, which makes him feel kinda useless, and that SUCKS when the person(s) impacted are particularly close to him. But at the same time, he has so much going on already at any given time and he Always prioritizes safety (esp of the kids) over anything else, so if there isn't an immediate threat or emergency, he'll stay out of it and just let people come to him about the thing if they deem it necessary. He's not the U.S, he doesn't feel the need to insert himself into every going on on the island. Especially potentially dangerous ones, getting involved if he doesn't have to be is just inviting harm and stress. He's not everyone's dad or guardian or whatever, he doesn't have to rush to aid everyone in their time of need. He'll offer it if relevant and he'll of course come rushing if asked, but generally speaking, he minds his business if he's not roped into it in some way and then hope that someone will fill him in well enough in the future. Fit's usually got his back.

You are Not getting his ass out and about at night, at least not unless you're just inviting him to your base. Especially with the kids. You're just not. Way too dangerous, shit always goes awry.

Sorry to come into your ask box to vent after your post...

But I gotta say, you certainly managed to really sum up everything I dislike about the mentality of "subverting expectations = good storytelling" folks.

Like, it had been such a thing for people to say "X is so good because it subverts audience expectations!" And it's been driving me up a wall because that's just such a backward mentality about it: subverting audience expectations is a completely neutral thing, and one can just as easily ruin a story by going against audience expectations as tell a good story by playing out what the audience might be expecting.

Which, not to necessarily be mean about RW//BY, but yeah... that so many passionate defenders of it are also of the "a story is good cuz it subverts expectations" crowd is... not unexpected.

No, but for real! The way that people and seemingly a lot of writers think that surprise = good is frustrating!:This is one reason why spoilers are such a big deal to people, is that their viewing experience seems to bank on surprise and shock about who might die, who ends up together, who wins what victory in the end. I should be able to know all the plot points and plot twists going in and still enjoy the finished product just as much. If something isn't well set up (Adam's switcheroo in motives, the existence of the gods, Penny being a flesh person, the Ever After, Blake's personality change, arguably Ruby's depression in V9,) or not well done (Ironwood's fall to villainy, Ozpin's gray morality, the bees, Neo's eventual suicide, Ruby's journey as a SEW, the whole morals of the whole show) then whether or not it 'subverts expectations' is entirely irrelevant.

People are fully allowed to complain that they thought a piece of media would do something they wanted and instead did something they personally don't like that much, also, because that IS a bummer. But when I complain about RWBY, most of the time it's not just because I'm salty that it isn't doing what I think I'd personally like more. Like, I like the game Octopath Traveler, but I wish it wasn't that 8-bit looking early video game design, but at the end of the day I don't care because just because it doesn't fit my personal preference doesn't mean it isn't good. I wish Zuko had joined the Gaang earlier in ATLA or had more time with the Gaang than he did, but I still think Zuko's story is as close to perfect as it probably could've been. I just write or read fanfiction for the personal preference stuff. But the complaints I typically have for RWBY aren't like that. Like YEAH I actually DO prefer stories without heroes falling to villainy and with lots of redemption arcs, but I'm not about to hate RWBY just for not following my own personal preferences. No, I criticize RWBY for the bad execution, the lack of emotional pay-off in their story beats, the inconsistent morality they splash here and there whenever it sounds good and then forget about. RWBY is a confused show packed with ideas that never seem to be able to come together and writers that seem more interested in making giffable moments than a well done story. It's just generally not a well written well executed show.

I think that 'it subverts your expectations' is just one of many excuses that people use to wave away criticism with as little thought or effort or need to actually engage in discourse as possible. Just like complaints that the writers weren't interested in good world building and lore and therefore the transition from the moster school drama Beacon Era into magical world traversing quest wasn't well done are waved away with 'you're just mad the writers aren't following your headcanons' or 'you just want cute girls to go brr and hate substance' without actually addressing the true meat of the complaint or offering any substantial counterargument.

BTW, complain any time! I don’t mind hearing it at all. XD

when the commentary during the sprint was like 'you know, he could have been on five consecutive race wins now if he hadn't crashed out of the catalunya sprint on the last lap', I had to laugh because that's the pecco bagnaia experience right there isn't it. even when he's winning four races in a row, a part of your brain is still remembering the disaster that directly preceded it. when he got that track limit warning, I was convinced he was gonna mess it up. not because it's something he usually messes up, because it isn't - just because you're always waiting for something to go wrong and that seemed as good an opening as any. but no, apparently he's just in the bit of the season where he wins stuff. for whatever reason. or maybe he'll crash on sunday. who knows

TALK SHOP TUESDAY: what does planning a longfic look like for you?

welllll the only proper longfic I wrote so far is Blood Red Rose (all the others just kinda... ended up being longer? but still only a couple of chapters vs 28, there's no contest here) but it's not so much different from what I do in general

the first phase is to just throw all my ideas in a word doc and then I can start organizing them. I organize them into three main parts: questions for the stuff I still need to figure out, ideas for stuff I may or may not use in the end, and outline, which is the stuff I'm already sure about. I generally already have a main idea of where the story goes so I fill in the outline as much as I can which usually raises a billion questions for me to answer so that's how I continue.

this is stuff like... backstories for the characters, the plot holes I noted while outlining, world-building if it's necessary (in BRR, I spent so much time just figuring out the vampire lore), etc. ideally I figure out all of them but there's always some that remains tbh. but if if it's not anything essential that needs to be answered right this second, that's ok, the answers tend to come to me when I start writing.

ideally by now, the story should be shaping out nicely, so I go back to ideas and try to see if I can use anything there at all. then I read through the outline once more to try and spot any holes or inconsistencies or anywhere where I might have to swap out scenes or something.

now this usually where I would stop for a regular fic, but for BRR I had to go further. timeline's important to me and I want it to make sense and this is a longfic with lots of stuff happening so I went ahead and figured out the rough dates for everything that happens. and then I finished by organizing the whole outline into chapters (originally it was like 22 and now it's 27 so it definitely evolved but I just needed a base). and there you have it! this takes me at least a week for a regular fic and several weeks for a longfic and it's probably a bit messy but it's worked for me so far

A2. How did you find your first fic?

I think I was between the ages of 10 and 12 and I was googling about Inuyasha and a fic popped up. I think I wanted to see what happened after the anime cut off and discovered fanfiction to fill that whole through google of all things. That was how I found ff.net.

B4. Who is your current favourite author? What is their best story?

HO BOY this is a hard one. I've generally really enjoyed a lot of writers, so I'm gonna cheat here and name multiple (fair warning that it is All Trigun at the moment because that is what I currently have brain worms for):

There are, of course, lots of other fics I love in other fandoms, but these are ones that have stuck out to me and currently make my brain go brr. There are probably lots of really good one-shots I'm missing because I tend to get brain worms more over longer fics, too. This list also probably has a bias towards fics I've followed a long time, because the longfics and one-shots I binged over a few days are ones I have a harder time remembering, though I do tend to go back and reread them.

B7. Which character is your favourite to read about? Why?

Right now? It's 100% Vash. Not only does the fact that the fandom largely writes him as trans or at least Not Cis make my enby, doesn't identify with my gender assigned at birth self very happy, but he's honestly such a complex and interesting character. There are so many different interesting things you can do with him, and there are a lot of subtle aspects of his character you can really dig into in fanfiction. I'm also just... a sucker for characters with a lot of struggles getting support systems, hurt/comfort tropes, and found family tropes, all of which Vash is great for.

C9. What show did you really try to watch, but you just couldn’t?

Hmmmmm there are a lot? I've completed 300~400 anime in my lifetime, not even counting Other Kinds of Shows, but I've dropped more than I've finished. Naruto comes to mind because I think I watched maybe 500 episodes of that for a friend, and like, I liked parts of it, but it was such an inconsistent watching experience that I ended up never really liking or really finishing it. I didn't have nostalgia to get me through it lol.

D6. How many bookmarks do you have?

612 right now! Granted, I've had my AO3 account for about ten years now, so it's not too impressive when you factor in how long it's taken me to get there.

D10. What is one story idea you really want to read but no one has written yet?

This one is haaaard because if no one is writing an idea I want to read, then I tend to write it myself. I guess a Vashwood SWAP AU is one? I technically haven't posted the Vashwood part of my SWAP AU, so I would say it counts lol. But on a serious note, I think there are a lot of cool AUs that would work really well for Trigun, but I don't see too many that try to take new and fun takes on the characters. I've seen a couple here and there, but a lot of people tend to stick pretty closely to canon. Which is great! Lots of really great fics like that out there! But it's also fun to just get wild with it sometimes, so I'd like to see more AU fics that just go ham and have fun with some outlandish and creative ideas.

I’ve beaten generations mania and forces btw (this is part of my “brother having me play every Wii/switch mainline sonic game (plus black knight) in order since unleashed” arc)

Generations was pretty fire, very fun and I liked how it’s like a love letter to the series! A bit cheesy with it yes but it was also very cute

Mania was rather fun, kinda hard, my brother was actually able to play with me, the level design was super cool, it wasn’t as memorable or fun for me as unleashed or generations but still great!

Forces was bad. The internet was not exaggerating. The plot was all over the place and made no sense. It was so tonally inconsistent and did not commit to/deliver on its premise at all. It was not fun. The controls were clunky to the point it felt like my guys weren’t following my inputs. My brother once looked over mid-level and said my face had zero emotion whatsoever. Infinites theme played for maybe a minute in the background of a cutscene full of dialogue, it wasn’t even a boss theme. Can’t explain how disappointing not hearing more of that absolute fire song was. Infinite himself was fantastic tho, I love overly edgy and *emotionally scars you for fun* villains and Liam O’Brien go brr

I’m now onto frontiers. Only an hour in and I love it (even though it took me like five tries to beat asura). If I remember to I will review that one when I beat it
