𝕱𝖎𝖗𝖘𝖙𝖘𝖎𝖙𝖊 𝖆𝖓𝖉 𝖗𝖊𝖘𝖊𝖆𝖗𝖈𝖍𝖎𝖓𝖌 | 08/01/20
Morning:
For the first half of the day we were given a brief titles “Out of rocks and earth: Drawing workshop”. The workshop we were about to do is based on the work of Henry Moore, one of the three key artists we are studying for this months brief.
The task was to develop ideas using Moores’ methods of doing so, using it to create these ideas for future three-dimensional figures.

𝕿𝖆𝖘𝖐 𝖔𝖓𝖊:
Work in pairs to create a ‘free-standing’ sculpture using rocks and clay. The clay should be used only as a material to join the rocks and make them stand, therefore it’s important to smooth out the clay to form with the natural curvatures of the rock/rocks.

With a classmate, we did the same together, creating our first rock figure;

And later also our second. We tried to go for a look opposite to our previous that looked more soft and rounded. For the one below, we picked out rocks that looked more jagged and rough, creating this little bridge:

Below is a picture showing all of the little stone sculptures the class put together in their little groups:

Using wax and ink, fill a page with drawings of your sculpture/sculptures from different angles. The drawing should be a mix of linear and tonal studies, using different scale.
Below is a video of my teacher showing and explaining to the class how this should be done:

youtube
So we then went ahead and began doing this ourselves:

After we had finished doing all of the drawing (looking drawing looking drawing) using the wax, we then went over how to further create a sense of depth by going over the wax with ink. Using the ink gives us the opportunity to play around with values to a further extend, making the drawings appear more three-dimensional, much like sculptures.

Below is yet another video of our teacher demonstrating this for us before testing it out for ourselves:
youtube
Here is a better picture showing what our teacher had done:

𝕿𝖆𝖘𝖐 𝖙𝖜𝖔:
Giving life - Firstly, photocopy your drawing onto cartridge paper, then, study the form of the drawings. Can you see characters emerging? Are they human or of some other form?
The aim now, is to give these shapes life. Work over each drawing, creating ideas for three-dimensional figures.
As told, we photocopied all of the pages we had drawn on, in my case that would be two.

Now we could focus on letting the pages come to life. This process straight away reminded me of when we did the inkblot test (Rorschach test) from the first brief where we focused on surrealism and the unconscious mind.
I began just drawing away using a fineliner;

𝕰𝖝𝖙𝖊𝖓𝖘𝖎𝖔𝖓:
Write a story for one or a few of the characters.
On the pictures above I wrote some short ideas for a backstory to give personality and context to the creatures that I came up with. After finishing these, we chose one of our creatures and introduces them to the rest of the class.
Afternoon:

Right before lunchtime, we went to Firstsite in town to see the work of Antony Gormley and his installation art piece Field for the British Isles. Gormley is also one of the three main artists that we are studying for this brief, so to be able to see some of his work up close and in real life is a great opportunity to understand his processes.
Field for the British Isles, 1993:

We then filled out the little booklet we all were given;

As we were about to leave for lunch, I decided to take a quick little detour through the rest of the expeditions displayed, finding appeal and inspiration in a few:

They reminded me of shape, form and texture, (which can all be applied into a three-dimensional subject such as clay sculpting) three of several terms of visual language. I wonder if I’ll be finding myself referring back to these in the future(?).
When we returned from firstsite, we began focusing on research methods:
𝕸𝖆𝖐𝖎𝖓𝖌 𝖈𝖔𝖓𝖓𝖊𝖈𝖙𝖎𝖔𝖓𝖘:
Aims & objectives:
To identify the possible influences of research
To identify methods of effective presentation
To use research to influence and support idea development
Artists to research connected to the brief:
Anthony Gormley
Henry Moore
Shaun Tan
Artists that I have chosen to research, based on the brief:
Johnson Tsang
Choi Xooang
𝕿𝖆𝖘𝖐:
List the types of research you might need throughout a project, from start to finish. Primary research: Interviews, looking and studying imagery, galleries, museums, exhibitions Secondary research: Book, documentaries, the internet, presentations, articles
Next to this list, identify how each type of research could influence you, e.g. Definitions of the brief - given ideas for primary research... Doing research using museums and exhibitions help to aid figuring out how the artist has come to the finished product of art, as well as letting you view it in person rather than seeing it on a screen.
𝕳𝖔𝖜 𝖉𝖔𝖊𝖘 𝖗𝖊𝖘𝖊𝖆𝖗𝖈𝖍 𝖍𝖊𝖑𝖕 𝖉𝖊𝖛𝖊𝖑𝖔𝖕 𝖞𝖔𝖚𝖗 𝖕𝖗𝖔𝖏𝖊𝖈𝖙?
We were a bunch of different slides, there to aid us in our research for this project and the projects to come. Because I myself learn well by writing down everything, I decided to recreate a few of the slides myself, taking my time and making sure I understood each bit. As I did this, we went over a few other key things to keep in mind to make sure our research is of high standard; mainly focusing on improving since when we first began the term last year (2019).
Showing a clear connection between research and ones development is vital. Along with this, it’s also important to make sure that we are responding to all the research studies we do for the reason that it gives value. Some ways that ones response could be evidenced, could be by:
Using arrows, pointers and annotations to show what you find interesting/have learnt. - Using arrows helps show what you are discussing and can be used to make comparisons between images or information.
Mapping your ideas following research to show the influences.
Highlighting quotes or text and listing your ideas around it. - It’s important to always list the titles, names and dates of the works you are analysing, so highlighting can be very useful in a context as such, but you could also draw over the images to further emphasise on something within the artwork.
Sketching or planning your ideas.
Making comparison between their (peers or artists) work and your primary images or development.
So to sum it all up while trying to keep it as brief and simple as possible;
Research (includes fx. the name of the artist, examples of their work, asking about the context a.k.a. asking “who?”, “what?”, “when?”, “where?” and “why?”) results in you then being able to reflect and respond to what you have found out; this includes both some form of analysis to reflect your own opinion, as well as incorporating some development of personal ideas. Photocopying or printing information is a valid method of research. Highlight and annotate the information to show what you find important and always list the source. Some examples of this could be from journals, magazine or books.
𝕳𝖔𝖜 𝖙𝖔 𝖒𝖆𝖐𝖊 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝖗𝖊𝖘𝖊𝖆𝖗𝖈𝖍 𝖑𝖎𝖓𝖐𝖘
The aim of research is to develop your understadning throughout a project.
Research can be used to develop your knowledge of a theme, the context of your work and your technical skills.
The way you use research at each stage may be different, but it can be considered and presented in the same ways. Here are some examples;
𝕿𝖆𝖘𝖐 𝖔𝖓𝖊
In groups, find definitions of the key words of the brief- look also at the similar terms and synonyms to broaden the possibilities, list all of these. We will come back to these terms later...
𝕿𝖆𝖘𝖐 𝖙𝖜𝖔
Now take the artist Shaun Tan and use the following terms to make further investigations

Reflective Blog Post: The Marshmallow Challenge
The instructions were simple - create a free standing structure to support the weight of a marshmallow using nothing but spaghetti and tape.
The highest tower wins.

With the competitive and time-based elements introduced everyone was enthusiastic and ready to get into it.
We got into groups, the timer began counting down and we were off.
One of my teammates immediately brought his idea to the table: it would be easier to start from the top and work our way to the base.
So from that moment onwards he became our leader, creating the top of our tower by sticking four stands of spaghetti into our marshmallow. While him getting in front of the project would save us time from thinking about what to do, it did limit us to a very basic design and there was not much the others could offer. While one half of the team was building the tower, the others either watched or walked around the room seeing if they could borrow any ideas.
We kept two things in mind to apply to the structure; its height and resilience; and experimented with how we were going to keep it standing. There was not much play involved in the development of the tower.
In the end, through reinforcing lots of tape and spaghetti wherever it was needed in order to hold our tower up, the design looked something like this:

It was among the tallest of our peers, beaten by a tower of the same design with the simplest of modifications - an antenna to hold up the marshmallow.
What stuck with me after that activity was the explanation given afterwards, how kindergartners managed to beat their older and ‘wiser’ counterparts:
The secret of this task, was to focus on getting a feel for the weight of the marshmallow and how it affected the spaghetti.
Really basic stuff right?
Yet the majority of us completely missed it and either went straight to trying to replicate structures of previous design or sciencing the hell out of it. This usually didn't end up amounting to much.
The most successful of us were the ones who played around with the marshmallow and contributed their ideas.
Why?
The teamwork aspect of it all is obvious: the towers will be taller if people experiment with their own ideas and use the best parts of that to develop the final object.
The act of playing with the marshmallow however is a lot more subtle, even more so that we are older and more experienced. I saw that many people took to previous knowledge and experience to solve the problem at hand: for example, a few of the towers had the characteristics that you would see on some bridges and landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower.
Even though it seemed easier to begin with, it was actually more difficult and time consuming to replicate these previous designs, as the materials we were provided with were absurdly impractical; yet that was the whole point of this challenge.
You see no one building spaghetti and marshmallow towers on a regular basis. Coming into this experience, I had no knowledge of anyone ever having attempted this before. We had to start from scratch in order to achieve the best results for the challenge.
The success of our tower included no prior knowledge of engineering principles, just pure trial and error. Our structures were skeletons of skyscrapers patched up excessively in order to keep it standing. We only did what was necessary because we figured out the necessary bits by starting from the top. There weren’t any intricate plans or designing it in an aesthetically pleasing way, we just had a goal. With the requirements of that goal given to us, we were able to focus on fulfilling them and accomplishing it.
There are many things my group and myself could have done differently though. The winning tower obviously bested us because their creators were more familiar with the interactions between the marshmallow and noodle. If we spent more time playing with the marshmallow, we would have reached the same discovery as the winning team and maybe improved our tower even further. We could have made use of all the people in our team by first working individually to produce small towers before coming together and then compiling what was best from each of our designs into one. Even though we sent our spy around the room, we didn’t incorporate any of what he told us into our tower because we were so set on our current design that we felt it was superior.
The marshmallow challenge represents creativity and innovation. It's human nature: “the highest level of human performance” (Sawyer, 2012, p.1). When we create, we are experimenting to solve problems that better our lives as a whole.
Of course, our towers were nowhere near engineering marvels, however the method we used to create them were what our ancestors used to develop the skyscrapers we have today.
The marshmallow challenge has encouraged me to start from the basics and that making mistakes is beneficial to the creative process. This allows us to “to escape from local optima and discover better solutions” (Bateson & Martin, 2013, p. 5).
Iteration and collaboration is evidently key to not only making towers from spaghetti, but to any project in the future. In later projects, I seek to encourage myself and others to share their ideas, start from the ground up (so to speak), and look at everything with the curiosity of a child. Utilizing what I have learnt from this activity should enable me to better my ability to come up with creative solutions to various issues I will come across during my time in BCT.
The lessons of this exercise has major implications for not only future projects in BCT but the extent of which we are able to push ourselves. Our creativity is simply our individuality expressed, doing something no one has ever done before and if it is exercised enough, it can lead to amazing things.

I would like to expand my use of frame by frame animation in this project incorporating more complex as well as simple uses of this method like the one above.
From frame by frame animation I progressed onto rotoscoping, although I have not worked on rotoscoping this term I did do a little bit in my first year. The animation above is from a walk cycle of a monkey. The process of rotoscoping produces a smoother, more realistic form of animation. I also have conducted my own experiments testing rotoscoping this project by animating over a music video. It’s a similar process to frame by frame as I would be working in photoshop using the timeline window to create my animation for both although the process is tedious the payoff is well worth it.
One thing which I definitely enjoyed the most this term was the process of filming for my last project ‘Fragments’. The role of cinematographer has taught me how to frame and capture my subject in many different ways. In addition to this I learnt about the different types of shot which I could use when filming my subject and the effect that each type of shot produces; I even wrote a blog about giving an in-depth analysis on each type. I began learning about these shots after seeing screenshots in class from Hitch-Cocks films in particular Psycho and the shower scene. The role of cinematographer has taught me many things, the skills I have learnt from filming in real life has taught me about how to frame my animations.
Although it was the editor’s role was to use cuts and compose the footage from the film into the final piece, I sat by the editor for our group and saw his process behind doing this. In addition to this I also learnt the different types of cuts by analysing footage from suspense films, in particular films from Hitchcock. As my last project was based around suspense we only focused on movies around this genre. The editor in our group used iMovie at first to compose the film however moved onto adobe premier pro. To make edits however he used photoshop as well as adobe ‘After Effects’.
In this project I have been learning a little about ‘After Effects’ as well as watching tutorials from a music video editor on YouTube, ‘Max Novak’ on how to create some edits and digital effects. It is worth noting some effects I will be creating on photoshop due to the fact I am already skilled with that program.

For my last two projects this term I have been required to work in black and white, although this has its limits, I felt that it worked quite well with the theme off suspense for the last project ‘Fragments’. The use of black and white I feel gives a dark, negative connation. The use of black and white also ties into another link I want to make with my previous project. As I’ve said before my last project was about Alfred Hitchcock’s movies, if I am doing a music video, I want it to be in the style of one of his old black and white suspense films while also integrating use of colour.
The best visualised example I have found of this would be another music video I found which amalgamate the use of colour and black and white quite well. The colour in the video is used to represent modern times and the black and white is used to indicate olden times. I really like this effect and hope to use it in my work however when it comes to the black and white footage in my video I would like to use it as a link back to Hitchcock’s work, I want the black and white to enhance the suspense and psycho theme of my work as well as the music.

plastics infograph
https://vimeo.com/324963739
Above is the link to my final infographic video about plastics. Out of all the videos I have made using After Effects, this one took a very long time to render and upload, most likely due to my poor choice of video codecs. However, I had an issue with my computer which did not allow me to select a rendering codec which would reduce the file size and make it easy to load, which caused me to waste a lot of time and I struggled to finish and upload it so I would not say this was entirely due to my fault but technical issues. This definitely did impact the creation of the animation but hopefully this was a one-off variable that will not impact future projects or commissions.
The main programs I used to make this infograph were After Effects and Illustrator. Illustrator was used to create quick, silhouette-like images and assets which I imported to After Effects to manipulate. I found that Illustrator is easier to use than Photoshop for a task like this because the pen tools can be used to make quick and very smooth silhouettes and shapes, whereas in Photoshop I would have to use a tablet and smoothness on the pen to make a shape and it would not be as smooth as something done in Illustrator. I also used references images to make assets off and I felt it was easier to use Illustrator for this. While admittedly I did not have much time to polish the assets as much as I would have liked (such as the wave and several of the human silhouettes), I think that for the most part a lot of my assets were recognisable in their silhouette form which is good, and the sleek style helped me to finish the asset-creation fast so I could spend more time on the actual animation.
I actually received some feedback on several assets I had created for the infographic, namely this turtle. Previously, the turtle did not have the shell drawn in a different colour and the whole body was grey. Several people I had asked to critique the animation told me that they found some assets hard to recognise, so I worked to fix as much as this as I was able to before the time limit was up. The small change I did to this turtle was to draw the shell again in a different colour, and this seemed to work as the feedback said that this was much more recognisable and still fit within the style constraints I had set for the animation.
After making the assets, I imported them into After Effects. In my project proposal I outlined that I would mostly be using puppet pins to animate and move my assets, and in every other case I used skills that I have learnt over the years. I have been experimenting with puppet pins since very early on in my After Effects career, and found them very versatile and easy to use. I am most proud of my use of them when I was making the turtle ‘move’ through the water, although to fully pull off that imagery without ruining the original based of the turtle I had to draw the legs separate to the turtle’s main body, parent the legs to the torso and then only put puppet pins on the legs. This ensured that the legs stayed with the torso but they also moved independently in their own way to create the illusion that the legs were moving. I also experimented with coding in this - I googled a tutorial for how to make actions loop, and clicking alt while hovering over the blue ‘stopwatch’ icons opened up a small tab where I could copy paste looping code ( loopOut("cycle",0); ).
I used this method for most of the movement in the infographic, and the few exceptions mostly used movements that I had already become familiar with in previous tasks. One other notable animation I did was several expanding ‘circles’ which gave some dynamic movement and helped me transition from scene-to-scene, and I felt like this gave the infographic a bit more of a ‘wow factor. I used the technique around twice in the video, and because I pre-composed the entire animation after I made the initial one I could simply copy-paste it into any other scene I wanted. To make the ‘popping’ animation, I created 2 circles of different colours that still fit in the palette of the animation, and set their scale position to 0. Then, depending on which circle I wanted to expand first, I would go as many frames away as I wanted the animation to last for and then set the scale to 100. The second circle to ‘expand’ would also have this done, but the keyframe that let them start to expand would be moved back a little so it looked like 2 circles popped after each other. I had the second circle expand enough to cover the entire composition, and I did this because I coloured it the same as the background so this made the scene transition, and I think that this looked very well. Since I had a lot of practice with this technique it wasn’t too hard to remember what to do, and I think it worked well here.
As I outlined in my project proposal, I kept the subject of the infographic on a more positive story about plastic, while keeping in some facts and statistics on plastic consumption and its effects on the environment to keep the ‘infographic’ nature of the video true. Now that I have finished the video, I believe that I didn’t capitalise as well on the positive spin on plastic awareness as I could have. I think this is mainly due to my writing and choice of what facts and story to show, and with perhaps more time allocated into the storyboarding and writing of the video I could have made it much more impactful and concise. I struggled a lot with showing both the stories and facts in a fair balance, but I think I achieved a fair medium in the end although I did veer off a little from the original story near the end.
I had originally intended to include music and sound effects, but due to time constraints I wasn’t able to record or mix music for the final project. There were also technical issues with this, as on the student computer where I was creating the animation, Chrome would not allow me to download anything from the internet which was crucial to including music and sound effects. Personally I do not feel like this brings down the quality of the animation because it includes a good amount of text which remains on the screen for a while for the viewer to read, and the images are fairly easy to recognise.
In the end I am fairly pleased with the final infographic I created. It didn’t exactly reach the vision that I intended for it, but came very close and I feel it definitely achieves the function it was set out to do. My main gripe with the infographic is the quality of some of the assets, because even though I have the excuse of time constraints and me setting myself less time to make the assets themselves, Illustrator still gives me plenty of chances to make high-quality assets and in hindsight I wish I had done a little more quality control when deciding when an asset was done. Thankfully after the feedback I requests I did manage to change a lot of assets to be more suitable, but I did not manage to fix them all and the few instances where I used the subpar assets do show in my opinion. Namely, I feel the big ‘wave’ that washes the plastic up could stand to look a little more like an actual wave, even though I did struggle a lot when drawing it anyway as I found waves hard to translate into the chosen style of the infographic.
However I think that most of the animation itself went very well. Of course I am no professional by any means in After Effects, but with the knowledge I have I believe I have incorporated a lot of interesting and dynamic effects into this animation, and did some very smooth and interesting transitions between scenes. I am especially proud of the aforementioned circle popping/expanding animations and the puppet pin/parenting trick that I used for the turtle and several other moving assets, and I believe they show that I have retained a good amount of knowledge on how things work in After Effects and how to incorporate them.

For the last couple of years I have been trying to refine the way I keep myself organised. These have come in various guises over the years and each year I try to improve the efficiency of my system. This is the first year though that I am truly trying to embrace the bullet journal as a repository for all my comings and goings (and often brain vomit too).
Now, I know a lot of people like to hand draw their bujo’s and fill them with what can only be described as calligraphic pornography, but that way just isn’t going to work for me. For one thing, my creativity has always been best utilised through digital means. I’ve never been much of one for drawing but also, realistically, I know I just don’t have the time to lay out all those beautiful and intricate pages by hand. Even with the best will in the world and much as I would like to, I know that I suck at sticking to things if they don’t fit comfortably within my already established routines. That’s why I’ve never managed to stick to long hand journaling for more than a few weeks before and why my previous attempts at bullet journal’s haven’t ever been quite as helpful and efficient as I need them to be.
So I took everything I’ve learned from my past experiences and put them together into my new, improved, proper bujo for 2017.
Here’s the format I decided on:
Firstly, it’s A5. I learnt last year that anything bigger than this that won’t fit easily into most of my handbags isn’t going to get filled in. It’s just not convenient and if I can’t carry it with me, it’s not getting filled in.
Secondly, it’s spiral bound. I settled on this so I could easily pull it apart and thread it together again and without too much hassle can choose to add in extra pages at a later date if I so wish. The book itself is actually designed to be a sketchbook. It’s just a cheap one so I wouldn’t actually recommend the paper weight as being high enough for watercolours, say, but it is thick enough that my pens are going to have a hard time bleeding through on the other side.
After I decided on the format I started designing the pages in Photoshop. I made them all black and white with the intention of decorating and colouring them as I filled them out. I did a fair bit of research on Pinterest (where else?) first and from this inspiration I brought together all my ideas into one great Frankenstein of a layout plan that would suit my needs.
2017 at a glance
Movies record
TBR shelf
The contents are as follows:
2017 at a glance
3 page year planner (for birthdays and key dates)
Monthly spread including:
a habit/mood tracker
a diary of events
a to do list
a blank page for brain vomit
Weight tracker
Savings tracker
Self care advice
Movies archive
Books read and to be read archive
I know many people like weekly or even daily breakdowns but again, this is too much detail and pressure for me to stay on top of. I’d spend more time recording things than actually doing them, which doesn’t make for being very productive.
Monthly layout
Prior to this year my bullet journals were really just diaries to help me manage my month but with added lists stuck in here and there but this time I tried to really concentrate on things I wanted to track in advance.
One thing I want to focus on this year is self care and my own mental wellbeing so that was the driving force behind the habit and mood tracker. The idea being that it will help me form new (healthy) habits as well as provide clear evidence of what happens to my mood when I either do or don’t keep up with them, hopefully motivating me to stick with it if I can see real gains.
Habit and mood tracker
We shall see how the format goes. A couple of weeks in and I’m already seeing the benefit of the mood and habit tracker and I love having a colourful and creative space to record my books and movie choices. A few people at work have seen it over my shoulder in the office and I’ve had some lovely compliments about the layout and design which is a nice boost too. One thing I feel like I am missing as a result of not having a weekly spread is a place to meal plan and/or record a shopping list, something which I find really useful when I’m a. on a diet and b.trying to save money. So this might be something I choose to incorporate next year.
I’m a great believer that to lead a fulfilling, creative and productive life takes a certain amount of discipline. I’m a huge advocate of The Action Method as set out by Scott Belsky in his book ‘Making Ideas Happen‘ and my bujo fits into that mentality well.
Here’s to an exciting, happy and productive 2017.

Caran d'Ache Workshop Book
Caran d'Ache Workshop Book
Just over a year ago, perhaps a bit longer, Caran d’Ache published a book, the book is called the “Caran d’Ache Workshop Book”. I was first alerted to it when a good friend of mine, Vinnie Gracanin from Australia who used to be a representative for Caran d’Ache, told me about it.
I took a look at the Caran d’Ache website, trying to find out a few more details; I knew from Vinnie that the book contained a lot of art work from various artists using Caran d’Ache products, but I didn’t know too much more.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
I took a look around YouTube and other art related blogs, just to see if there was other reviews or write ups about the book and I couldn’t find anything at all, other than a video of someone unboxing the book. So I took the plunge and purchased to book for myself and I was so happy that I did. However, I didn’t want people to go through the same issues I experienced before purchasing the book and having to blindly by it, and so completed this review. I know watching or reading reviews of books is not the most exciting thing in the world, especially as actually reviewing books can be very tricky. I can’t show too much of the book, to the extent people know everything there is in the book and don’t need to buy it, but I have to show just enough to help you see what the benefits of the book are.
Caran d’Ache Workshop Book Languages
Before getting into the contents of the book and why I love it so much, it is important to let you know just who can purchase this book. Of course anyone can buy the book, but what I mean is who can purchase it and read it in their own language. Luckily, Caran d’Ache haven’t just published a wonderful book and done so in English, the Caran d’Ache Workshop Book comes in many different languages.
Obviously English, which serves a good portion of the speaking world, Swiss, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Dutch and Austrian. On the Caran d’Ache website they also have an option for Belgium, however the main language spoke in Belgium, or one of the languages spoke there is Dutch, there is also French speaking and Brabantian. So as you can see, the book is available to most of the speaking world.
Caran d’Ache Workshop Book Status
The format of the Caran d’Ache Workshop Book is what I would call a “Coffee Table Book”, the type of book that you would have out on display in your living room our lounge for anyone, artist or not, to pick up and browse through. For those of you who may not be old enough to remember, before the internet and Google, if you wanted to learn something new or research a topic, you had to pick up a book with pages, not an e-book, and read it. No question a much more laborious task than that of the methods we use today, non the less, this book is not only full of incredibly interesting information, this is also an visually stunning, page turning master piece in its own right.
There are 192 pages, protected in a sturdy hard backed binder, the spine of the book is a little different to other books you may have read, I am not quite sure how to explain it to you, other than show you some images of it. With the binding of the pages in such a format, it allows you to open the book out with worry of splitting or cracking the other spine.
Caran d’Ache Workshop Book Contents
When you first open the book, the inside of the hardback cover have the image of a swatch on them, which I thought was quite funny given that when us colored pencil artist buy a new set of colored pencils the first thing we all do is create a swatch.
The book is split into manageable and easy to follow sections and within each section are sub sections, I wouldn’t really call them chapters, but I guess if you would prefer to call them chapters, that would be fine.
The first section in the book is called “Background”, and I personally think this is such an interesting section that it grips you and pulls you into the book and company right from the beginning. Here they discuss the materials Caran d’Ache use and their commitment to the environment. For a lot of artists, this is such an important subject and one I am happy to report, many art supply companies are really taking seriously.
The next section is called “Practice”, this section talks about possible tips and techniques for using Caran d’Ache products such as Graphite, Gouache, Watercolor, Coloured Pencils, Fibre Pens, Pastels, Acrylic and Modelling Clay.
The next section is called “Know-How” and this is quite a comprehensive section with lots of topics covered. Topics such as the Colour Wheel according to Wilhelm Ostwald, Paper, Colour Theory, Techniques, which has so many subsections in itself.
The next section is called “In The Caran d’Ache Workshop” which I am sure you can guess what is covered here? Subjects such as mixing techniques, tonal drawing techniques, modelling clay techniques and so much more.
The next section is called “Passe-partout” which is a French phrase and according to the Collins English dictionary means
“A mounting for a picture in which strips of strong gummed paper are used to bind together the glass, picture and backing”
This section discuss framing, the different types of framing processes and frame types that can be used, storing your finished work and presenting it. This information is of course incredibly useful to artists wishing to sell their work and present it in the best possible way.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
The final two sections are pretty self explanatory, “The Gallery” and “Caran d’Ache History. I know from previous reviews I have completed that a lot of people are not interested in the history of a company, however, I personally find to understand a companies current situation and future aspirations, it is important to understand the history.
the Gallery is full of wonderful images from artists all over the world using various products from Caran d’Ache, no matter what your favourite Caran d’Ache product is, be it the Museum Aquarelle, the pigment bursting Neocolour II, the Royalty quality Luminance, the precision of the Pablo or the enormous color selection of the Supracolor Soft, there is an art piece to represent your favourite product.
However, you don’t just have to flick to the back of the book to see images of artwork, the entirety of the book is littered with beautiful and detailed images of Caran d’Ache products. For those of you who follow The Art Gear Guide reviews and like the style that I have tried to incorporate into the reviews with extreme, Hi-Def, close ups images of the products and enjoy this format, then you will love the Caran d’Ache Workshop Book.
The images throughout the book are amazing and so incredibly inspirational. We all find inspiration in different things and ways. For me, there are a few YouTubers who I watch all the time, re-watching videos they have created over and over again and I find inspiration in this. Caran d’Ache actually have a YouTube Channel were they show case and demonstrate their products, watching these videos help ignite inspiration and now the Caran d’Ache Workshop Book helps stimulate my inspiration,
Caran d’Ache Workshop Book Price
the price for the Caran d’Ache Workshop Book is very much a universal price just with the different exchanges at play. Buying the actual book is difficult to get hold of via the likes of Amazon or Ebay regardless of the country. I looked on these platforms for months and just couldn’t find one. So the best place to go is directly to the companies website. From here you will have no problems whatsoever getting hold of a copy and you can select which language you want the book in.
The price of the book is £41 and as I mentioned, because the only place selling the book is the Caran d’Ache website, it is the same price regardless of the country you reside in. I personally think for a book of this type, a wealth of important information, a gallery of beautiful art work created by amazing artists from all over the world and a detailed catalog of the companies most desired and favoured products.
Caran d’Ache Workshop Book Conclusion
I am sure most of you who know me, know just how much I love the Caran d’Ache products I have used and reviewed thus far, so when I learnt of a book published that detailed the products, demonstrated techniques about the products and spoke of the company’s history among many other things, I really had to get a copy. Before getting the book, as it was an online purchase, as opposed to walking into a book store and flicking through it, I would have liked to know a bit more information on the book, in the form of a review, prior to buying it.
So I hope for anyone who is interested in the Caran d’Ache Workshop Book or, perhaps a bit like myself, has been interested and just wanted to know a bit more about the book before buying it, I hope this review will be of some help to you. I know some people may think that £41 is a bit too much for a book, however if you take a look around Amazon and other book stores, books in this particular genre and size, mostly cost in and around this price point.
For any colored pencil enthusiast, be that watercolor pencils, pastel pencils, colored pencils, graphite pencils or even supplies such as modelling clay, acrylic paint and felt tip pens, I really think this book will be a source of knowledge, inspiration and visual stimulation. I have also completed a youtube video showcasing the book as much as I can without damaging sales for the company, follow the link to watch if you are interested.

No Time to Exercise? I`m Not Buying It
When it pertains to excuses for leaving undesirable activities, "I don't have time" is just one of my favorites. Dinner with the mother-in-law? No time! A journey to the dry cleaners? Are you joke me with this timetable? What's terrific about it is that no one can politely examine how active you are and, when it involves leaving working out, exists a far better reason out there?
Not according to folks who cite lack of time is one factor they don't exercise.
Yet do we really lack the moment or is that simply an excuse?
How Much is Enough?
Starting a workout program indicates reorganizing your schedule to enable time for it, yet it doesn't need that much time. Scientists know that brief bouts of exercise can be simply as efficient for effective weight loss and also wellness as longer exercises which many individuals locate it easier to stick to shorter exercises. In one study, scientists contrasted 2 groups of exercisers, those who did brief bouts of workout (numerous 10-minute exercises) and those that did long-bout workouts (20-40 mins of continual workout). Here's what they learnt about the short-bout exercisers:
They were able to adhere to their workouts more consistently
They exercised more days a week than the long-bout group
They accumulated even more exercise time each week than the long-bout group
They lost even more weight, a standard of 19 pounds versus 14 pounds for the long-bout group
Other researches have discovered that brief bouts of exercise could likewise help lower cholesterol as well as lower the threat of heart illness, similarly longer work out sessions can. Understanding that you could separate your exercises right into a couple of 10-minute sessions, does the lack-of-time justification begin to lose its attraction? Only if you dig a little deeper to learn why it's so hard to stay with your exercise program.
Getting to the Base of Things
Turns out, if you wish to alter your routine to accommodate workout, you need to be inspired to do it. Individuals who exercise don't necessarily have even more time compared to you, they've merely figured out that what they're getting out of exercise is worth even more than whatever else they could be doing throughout that time (resting, having lunch with good friends, duties, etc.).
Think concerning it. If somebody called as well as provided a cost-free massage therapy, however just in the next one hour, just how difficult would you function to clear that hour of time? If you like totally free massages, you'd job rather hard to alter your routine, similar to you locate time for various other things like doctor's consultations, working late, enjoying TV, playing video game or running errands.
Exercise is similar to anything else yet, unless it's a priority for you, you're never ever going to make time for it. I could offer you a hundred reasons exercise should be important to you, but you're the one who needs to decide if it actually is important to you.
And if it's not, why not?
Getting idea right into why you do just what you do (or don't do) is the only method to change things for the better.
Admit the truth - Do you really lack the moment to workout exists some other reason you're not fitting in workouts? Start by discovering your perspective on exercise and also the factors you don't do it. Do you have a worry of failing? Or maybe you merely don't know where to start.
Ask on your own: If I devote to work out, how would certainly I fit it? - Take a seat with your timetable and see just what you come up with, reminding on your own that you're not devoting to anything right now. Possibly you might rise 15 mins early for a stamina workout or utilize component of your lunch hour to take a brisk walk or do a workout. Make a list of all the times you could exercise, despite exactly how short.
What regimens would certainly I have to change in order to exercise? - With your previous checklist in mind, exactly what would need to change if you made use of that extra time for workout? For morning workout, you would have to gather your workout clothing the evening before and obtain up earlier than usual. Go through each action in your mind or, even better, technique someday to see exactly what would certainly need to alter if you did this on a normal basis.
What sort of workout would certainly be attracting me? - If you were to awaken in the morning and also workout very first point, exactly what would seem excellent to you? Walking outside? Yoga workouts? A circuit workout? Make a listing of activities you delight in as well as imagine yourself doing those activities on a normal basis.
What sort of exercise routine could I deal with appropriate now? - If you had to schedule workout today, what would fit in with your life now? A 15 minute walk prior to morning meal and also a half-hour at lunch? A quick jog with the pet after job or a workout video production before supper? How many days of exercise would certainly you want to commit to? Ignore exactly how many days you should exercise as well as concentrate on the amount of days you will exercise.
Practice, Practice, Practice - Using all the info you've collected, established up an exercise timetable as well as dedicate to exercising it for, state, two weeks. Reassess and also see exactly how you're doing. Do your workouts fit well with your existing routines? Is it functioning or do you have to make adjustments? Technique is how you determine exactly what will work and also just what won't.
Too usually, we fret so much concerning obtaining the best amount of exercise in that we wind up obtaining no workout whatsoever. It's tough to allow go of the idea that long, sweaty exercises are the just one that 'count,' yet in the new world we live in, we need to make some adjustments in exactly how we live. Making time for workout, also if it's just 5 to 10 minutes at a time, is your primary step to making it a long-term component of your life.
Next Page: Timesaver Workouts
If you do go with much shorter exercises, you may wonder if you can really get an effective workout if you just have 10 mins. Everything depends upon what you do as well as just how hard you function. When you're doing brief exercises, you intend to concentrate on intensity and work more challenging than you typically do. That implies on a Regarded Exertion Range of 1-10, attempt to maintain your intensity around 7-9 throughout the exercise. It might be difficult, yet you're only doing it for 10 minutes.
Cardio Workouts
When you're planning your workouts, you'll desire a minimum of two of your of 10-minute sessions to include cardio workout. Any task will certainly work as long as you work hard at it. There are some activities that are tougher than others and also permit you to obtain your heart rate up a little bit much faster, which is what you desire with brief workouts. Some suggestions include:
Running
Walking as fast as you can
Run up the stairs
High intensity steps like jumping jacks, squat jumps, tip jumps, kickboxing, jumping rope, vigorous dancing
Cycling with both rate and high resistance
Any cardio device at the fitness center - work at a high degree of strength (rate, resistance and/or incline) for 10 minutes
You could also find more suggestions at 10-Minute Shortcut Cardio Workouts.
Strength Training Workouts
Strength training is another task you intend to include in your shorter exercises as well. So, if you have three 10-minute sessions planned, you could possibly make use of two for cardio and one for toughness or you can blend and match depending on what you're doing the rest of the week.
To obtain one of the most from your strength training, you may intend to follow a circuit regimen where you choose 10 exercises and also do every one for regarding a minute (or to tiredness, whichever comes first). You additionally wish to choose exercises that entail greater than one muscle group each time to keep the strength up.
An example of a strength circuit may be:
Squats
Walking lunges
Side lunges
Squats with leg lifts
Pushups
Bent over rows

Barbell bicep curls
Crunches on the ball

407 Re-evaluating the brand
407 EVALUATING BRAND DEVELOPMENT TASK - Critically evaluate personal, professional and skills related development over the course of study.
401 – Deconstructing the artist PERSONAL - distinctive, characteristic, unique, individual, one's own, particular, private, peculiar, exclusive, idiosyncratic, Consider how the 401 unit affected you personally
1. What was your initial reaction to the deconstruction process?
It was exciting because I finally give myself time an space to look into myself a little deeper. Something I always knew I needed to do but never allowed myself too because of distractions in life. Rushing into projects and writing sessions because I felt thats what I needed to be doing and experiementing with different people before understanding what I wanted and everything that really identifies and resonates with who I am as a person and not just an artist and who I think I should be.
2. Once you started to deconstruct your brand how did it make you feel? It was hard and I began questioning everything I was doing. Over thinking whether I was right or wrong or found new ways to experiment all got bit too much. I feel like I went round in a massive circle to find justification for my previous work. at the end of the process i realised that i was right in my direction and validation had been given. The new things i had completed were things that I can use down the line and part of the journey. It has made things clearer now and kind of adds up as to what I like and where I fit as an artist. Why i like the things i do example glitter, alice in wonderland, dreamy, fantasy, dancing.
3. How did discussing these experiences with your peers affect you, what new insights did you gain?
Some people can get confused with me and my ideas and thats fine because I realised not everyone will understand me. Thats part of my brand I am mysterious only some will understand and work me out and thats ok with me. I am there for a specific group of people who are just like me and that makes me happy and trusting knowing there will be those people and I will discover them as I go along my journey.
4. Were there any negative affects?
Some people were a little confused and thought I was hiding behind ‘Aura’ as in an alter ego and not being true to myself. I had to explain that Aura is not part of reality and that it is myself it’s just a way of me expressing and being myself a lot better than perhaps the every day me can be in reality. However they slowly began to understand that I am a complex person and thats part of my brand.
5. Did this unit change the way you thought about your work? if so please elaborate. PROFESSIONAL Consider how the 401 unit affected you professionally I did change my direction to some extent and I did begin to over think a little, which is good and bad thing. Everything became clear and relatable in my life and linked to my journey or inspirations for example Alice in Wonderland links to how I’m kind of lost in my own dreamworld and I have discovered thats how my music and voice sounds, dreamy and un-conforming to rules as it is my world. However I also started to think that all the things had to make sense to the things that I collected e.g. images that represented me I directly linked to my music and my brand image and colour patterns etc.
1. How did the deconstruction process affect the professional side of your work? for instance did you consider approaching any part of the creative process in a different way?
I looked at my traits such as the ‘dreamer’ and angelic voice and discovered dreamier sounds were what I wanted to incorporate as well as contrasting with grittier sounds. I am now more carefully referencing songs to producers I would work with rather than just getting lost in all the sounds and ideas of others and going off what they are good at or want to do. Also in the past i didn't allow myself enough creative freedom and the deconstruction has taken me back to the ideas and the message and what its for. It slowed the process down but its made it more of a building relationship.
2. Did you develop any new working methods or approaches as a direct response to this unit? I will approach production in a more discussion based rather than rushing into just making music. Letting people understand what I want and not work on a formulae as such. Being more selective in my approach has meant I'm filtering out the wrong people to work with.
3. Have you professional plans changed as a consequence of the deconstruction process? SKILLS - A skill is the ability to carry out a task with pre-determined results Consider how the 401 unit strengthened existing skills or helped you develop new skills Yes I am considering things a lot more carefully rather than rushing things I'm giving myself more time. Im thinking more about who I'm spending my time working with. Asking more questions for example if a producer asks me to work with them I will ask if they play instruments and how they would approach this. For example are they looking to build a lasting working relationship partnership or would they just be making me an instrumental as a one off. I think this important for the level of commitment and value that they can add to the music. And the more skills and experience is mutually beneficial.
1. make a list of all existing skills and highlight any skills which you enhanced though the completion of this unit, remember skills can also be thinking skills, creative skills as well as technical skills. Thinking - what needs to go into my music how much depth and understanding do i have on what I want where do my inspiration draw from what am I trying to say how i want to be perceived and who my audience were. Writing skills - developing an understanding of my writing style and non conforming to structure and not questioning that it will be accepted. Realising I want to be decoded by others and applying it to my writing process. Marketing I used to think I wanted to be the popstar but I realised I want to remain quite mysterious and less predictable.
Decision making.
2. Describe the relationship between skill development, skill enhancement and brand development. I have enhanced my writing in different ways but this made me consider a different route almost. However through developing my decision making skills and thinking about what I really want my music to do it has directly impacted on my brand vision. For example making the decision on the style of music I want to make has influenced my image and the social posts I put out to the world and the art work and videos for my music. Also the productions behind the music.
403 – Brand development PERSONAL
What effect did action planning have on you personally? How did you feel, what were your responses emotionally to this task and why do you this was? Writing the things down that I wanted to achieve definitly made things more clearer and break down the process of how I would get to each step. Breaking it down helped me not get so overwhelmed and thats where I usually get a block because I am over thinking everything I need to do because I had no plan laid out. This is also helped me become calmer in the studio and begin the enjoy the making music as opposed to making it feel like high pressure and stressed.
PROFESSIONAL
1. How did action planning affect you professionally, explain why it had this affect. SKILLS 1. identify any skills you purposefully aimed to developed as part of this unit and explain how action planning specifically helped you to achieve this.
I learnt how to complete things. Seeing things through to a conclusion is now my main objective. I have discovered what works for me and how to work collaboratively. . I had recognised that i had built a relationship with someone who understands my way of working and taking the pressure off me to do everything for myself e.g. recording the whole idea. I over think and get so many ideas being with my engineer allows me to go through in a calm organised way and bounce off their advice. My working relationships are based on real understanding.
406 – PRESENTING THE BRAND PERSONAL
1. What was the emotional affect of critically analysing your core values? It was positive it took me back to my childhood and things and even to my teenage years for example one of my values if to not conform to what is expected something I realised I have had in me since a young age and also I was a little rebellious at school. It kind of made things make sense. I also never followed the crowd and as I have gotten older done a lot of things independently because I find it hard to pretend to want to be part of groups or be around others too much. I like being on my own and not being told what is cool and not cool or what to do. As I have definitly learnt with my music. I should not take too many opinions of others and continue to walk alone with my idea until I find the people that will understand me.
2. Did anything become clearer as a consequence of this critical process? Yes I feel knowing what my values are really help bring my brand together as a whole who I am what my messages might be and how my music also relates to them. Before I was a little lost but thats okay because that is who I am as a person and is also part of the brand. It also gave me more confidence as looking at the UK market artists I can clearly identify a need and a gap in the market for an artist like me.
PROFESSIONAL
1. Has anything changed at a professional level as a direct consequence of this unit?
SKILLS 1. Have you strengthened or developed any new skills as a consequence of this unit, if so please discuss this process and explain how you think your brand development is likely to develop as a consequence.
I think just understanding what the vision is and who I am as a person helped identify my values and that has made my branding so much easier to put into place and build. I think I have recognised skills that I already have such as relationship building with fans and connecting with fans through my music the way i intended too. I feel like I also have a clearer direction of the route I am going to take with what music I will release first and where to go for feedback. For example I will release my more darker moodier music to begin with and look to tastemakers and play listing as a way of gaining some recognition as opposed to more traditional radio. This has definitly gave me more confidence as I used to worry about my music being played on radio or not being accepted but there is a huge world out there and the use of the internet to connect with so many people.
TASK 3. Summarise how the course has changed your thinking or approach and the affect this has had on your artist brand and you personally.
It changed me from thinking I want to be a big global superstar on performing on the MTV awards and having my music played on the radio. I realised thats quite the opposite of what I want. I want to remain mysterious for along as I can and allow myself to be more artistic and expressive because thats who I really am deep down. Not what mainstream expect or want artists to be. I’d rather people find me than me forcing my music down peoples throats and rather not be in every music video and be anonymous sometimes using smart visuals that make people wonder. In the future of course moving into more commercial outlets is what I have learnt I would like to do but for now I am happy to explore my darker more cooler side because that is okay and everything is stages and processes right now I'm at that point in my life and I have learnt not to over think it just enjoy it and experiment if anything but also allow for inperfections.
