this man is truly a masterclass in how not to act when you find yourself suddenly accused of the murder you thought you had oh so cleverly planned and gotten away with

Kidnapped P2: Yellow Notice
A/N: part 2 coming… now? whoops....
Part 3 will take a while, this was just another brain worm munching on my neurons
Contains: Kidnapping, mild blood, ANGST BABY WOOOO, still no actual spoken lines, gn!reader, vague violence. Goes back to 1st pov at the end
W/C: ~940
Part 1
═════════════════════════
A Yellow Notice is a global police alert issued by INTERPOL for missing persons, such as victims of parental and criminal abductions, and unexplained disappearances. The alert can also be used to identify people who are unable to identify themselves. One of its larger strengths is its international range, as border officials are notified of missing persons and countries can request additional information in the likelihood that the person has exited the country. Unlike the USA’s Silver and AMBER alert systems, it is used for everyone. Sensitive cases and Notices are withheld from the public.
Emotions are unpredictable. In a dangerous environment like the task force’s, there’s too many variables to weigh when it comes to reaching a planned objective. It’s a chain reaction, emotions cause poorly-thought-out actions and behaviors; which means a death sentence for those in the field. You must do everything you can to lessen that unknowing.
The team wasn’t allowed to take this case, nor were they given any details about your possible rescue. Such a personal stake is dangerous for them and you. As much as John wants to raise hell and demand that they be a part of it, his experience and expertise here tell him that they’re right. When everything has to be as clean and careful as possible, emotions are like bleach on black clothing.
Entering their little common area, John finds Kyle on the couch, not quite asleep but drifting towards it. Johnny was out cold next to him, drooling on his shoulder. Simon’s head and shoulders rest across both their laps, Johnny’s hand sandwiched between his balaclava and cheek as well as Kyle’s hand smoothing across the visible bit of pale stomach his jacket rides up on.
When John sits on the floor in front of them, Simon wordlessly passes him a necklace. A little chain with a raw stone on it. Your birthstone. The raw carat-sized nugget glistens in his hand; a gift for Simon from you, something from home to wear. The stones you got the other three were in the form of rings and piercings, left at home as they were against regulation. Simon always hid his under clothing, keeping it warm right next to his dog tags. The green ring around his neck from the sterling silver proves he never takes it off.
At the moment, it was the only piece of you at the base. They thought they were protecting you by leaving you anonymous. No pictures sit on any of their desks, and no clothing of yours sits in any of their closets. All it did was starve them of you.
That night, they were allowed back to their house to get items. Under the supervision of the officers, they were allowed to retrieve clothing, medication, toiletries, and the few personal things they needed. Johnny started to argue with the officers when they weren’t allowed to take your belongings, saying they may contain forensic value and cannot be removed. As they argue, the other three latch on to the opportunity and quickly snag your soaps, cologne, and a bunch of clothes stuffed in with all of theirs.
When they leave, Kyle sees the blood in the kitchen, dried brown and the oven glass untouched. The ingredients abandoned on the countertop start to turn bad. As he turns to leave, he hears a couple officers talking about the “international inquiries” they filed. He knows what that means, doesn't really take a genius for that. The helpless part in him fears that only makes things worse. Looking at the mess left behind, he feels repulsed by the place. Kyle has slept in places far worse than this, as a soldier he knows and willingly partakes in that, but it all feels tainted to him now.
If you were to come home at all, it shouldn’t be to this.
━━━━━━━━━━
It’s not cold and dark where you’re at.
It’s blistering hot, the sun and humidity beats down on you in the concrete structure you were put in. Like a prison rec yard, the place has walls around you but no roof, meaning you're cooking in the heat with whatever breeze is blocked off. Mosquitos dine on you, a fucking holiday ham glazed in sweat to them. You don’t remember when the people left; there's no sound other than whatever wildlife surrounds the outside. The slash in your leg seemed to stop bleeding, it didn't feel deep. You had sadly torn the sleeve off the hoodie you had on (Johnny’s favorite, but he preferred how you and the others filled it) to wrap the wound like they taught you. What hurt worse than the leg was the seemingly dozens of cuts on your feet and face. The swarm of unfamiliar soldiers in your kitchen were aggressive, the knife you pulled from the block to defend yourself was immediately met with their own serrated one. Your mind conveniently doesn’t remember the feeling of your head being rammed into the oven door and the cuts your face received. You were out for most of the time, you don’t remember if you were drugged or knocked-out, or if your mind just retreats. Small mercy that the abductors haven’t come back for you yet. But as the dangerous sun creeps higher in the sky, the shadow you hide in to stave off the sunburn and heat exhaustion shrinks closer to the wall you lay against. You trusted that your loves would find you in time, they got this far in life without dying, so they obviously are damn good at what they do, that it's only a matter of waiting.
But later as the door of your ‘cell’ opens and several plain-masked soldiers walk in, that trust frays the tiniest amount. Part 3

The ex-president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, could soon become the first Asian former head of state to be tried at The Hague.
The populist politician was arrested on Mar. 11, 2025, after the International Criminal Court issued a warrant relating to his “war on drugs.”
Some 6,000-plus people were killed during the crackdown. But despite the controversy surrounding his policies and the end of his presidency in 2022, Duterte remains an influential figure.
The Conversation U.S. turned to Lisandro Claudio, an expert on Philippine politics and history at the University of California, Berkeley, to explain how the arrest could impact domestic politics and whether this could mean the end of Duterte’s sway.
What do we know about the arrest and charges?
The arrest warrant issued by the ICC states that Duterte is charged with crimes against humanity relating to events that happened between Nov. 1, 2011, to Mar. 16, 2019. This is important as it covers a period not just when Duterte was president but also when he was mayor of Davao City – the richest city in the island of Mindanao.
Duterte went on to serve as president from 2016 to 2022, but he pulled the country out of the Rome Statute, the treaty that set up the ICC, in 2019. Nonetheless, the ICC says the alleged crimes fall within their jurisdiction as they were carried out before the Philippines ended its relationship with the ICC.
Duterte is alleged to have overseen the systemic use of murder, torture and rape against civilians.
He is accused of acting as the de facto leader of the Davao Death Squad, a group that was responsible for summary executions and the murder or disappearance of more than 1,000 people in and around the city. But importantly, the prosecution is also of Duterte’s nationalization of the strategy of death squads. On coming to power, he incorporated the “war on drugs” into the policy of the national police.
Based on the way the ICC warrant was written and reporting in the Philippines, it appears that former members of the Davao Death Squad and police officers may be testifying for the prosecution, including, it is thought, hit man-turned-whistleblower Edgar Matobato and ex-Davao City police officer Arturo Lascañas.
What role did the government play in the arrest?
Duterte’s arrest and rendition, for want of a better word, to the Netherlands appears to have taken place with the cooperation of the Philippine government.
President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., the man who succeeded Duterte, held a press conference following the arrest in which he explained that despite no longer being part of the Rome Treaty, the Philippines is committed to supporting the International Criminal Police Organization, or Interpol. And it was Interpol that asked Manila to enforce the warrant after receiving it from the ICC.
The indication from Marcos was that the Philippine government had no choice but to comply with Interpol for two reasons. First, it is the expected behavior of a democratic nation to comply with international norms, and second, Interpol has helped the Philippines arrest fugitives in the past – including former mayor and suspected Chinese spy Alice Guo.
In short, Marcos is saying it is in the national interest to comply with the ICC arrest warrant.
Is it in President Marcos’ political interests, too?
The Philippines can’t dictate to the ICC when to issue a warrant, or to whom.
And it appears ICC prosecutor Karim Khan requested the warrant on Feb. 10, so the timing wasn’t determined by Marcos.
But that isn’t to say that it isn’t fortunate timing.
There is an important midterm election in May, and Marcos is keen to use it to consolidate his power amid an ongoing feud with Vice President Sara Duterte – the daughter of the now-arrested former president.
In 2022, Sara Duterte and Marcos ran on the same ticket for vice president and president. But this coalition between two family dynasties – Bongbong Marcos is the son of former Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos and still powerful matriach of the family, Imelda – broke down rather quickly.
Fighting between Sara Duterte and Martin Romualdez, the speaker of the House of Representatives and a cousin of President Marcos, strained the relationship.
But beyond the personality issues, there has been a divergence in policy between the Dutertes and Marcoses. Notably, under Marcos Jr., the Philippines has pivoted back to the U.S. by allowing American troops back into the country and taking a more aggressive stance in regards to China in the South China Sea.
This approach has been challenged by the Duterte family, which has been closer to China. In the first year of the Marcos administration, Rodrigo Duterte served as a sort of envoy to Beijing, although it became increasingly clear that this was more of an independent relationship between the former president and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
So could this be the end of Duterte’s influence?
That is certainly what President Marcos may be banking on.
The ICC prosecution of the father paired with a forthcoming impeachment of the daughter will neuter the Duterte clan’s power.
The reason this is so important for Marcos is that Sara Duterte has made it clear she wants to be the next president, and given the ill feeling between the two, there is a widespread assumption that if in power she will go after various members of the Marcos family.
With Duterte busy defending his case in The Hague, he will be unable to focus his efforts on helping his senator choices get elected in the midterms. It will also, presumably, end his bid to return as mayor of Davao City – a position that would give him a powerful bully pulpit.
No one should underestimate the charisma of Rodrigo Duterte; he is like a Donald Trump figure in that way. Many critics don’t fully understand the power of his charisma, his humor and the warmth that he displays to supporters – but it propelled him to high levels of popularity while in power.
And the public doesn’t see that charisma in his three children, including current Vice President Sara Duterte. Part of this is due to sexism – there is a lot of sexism in Filipino politics, so people are more likely to support a brash-talking man like Rodrigo Duterte, compared with his daughter. And Sara Duterte has problems of her own – notably the impeachment charges relating to alleged corruption while she was secretary of education.
Could this lead to a more polarized politics?
Your guess is as good as mine here. In the short run, the arrest of Rodrigo Duterte is clearly very good for President Marcos. And the small scale of the pro-Duterte protests suggest no great uprising against the arrest.
But what happens next – and how it is reported – is crucial. Filipinos love a political martyr. We saw this when former President Joseph Estrada was arrested and prosecuted over stealing public money in 2001 – his mughshot was adopted by supporters around the country. The same could happen to Duterte – it could go both ways.

Thinking about how Looker not only gave Emma a roof over her head, a place to finally stay, safety, made sure she was FED, etc etc-- but also taught her how to read and write? In between his Interpol work that he was keeping very secret, he was actually giving Emma a bit of an education. Emma learns REALLY fast but it makes sense for her.
He is her father figure and it's funny to see her wear a tiny, tiny brown coat with big buttons. Not only that but she has a dark grey coat in her office that's exactly like Looker's but recolored, literally. Also compared to the noir clown himself, she has the window open for natural light instead of looking through the blinds.
I'm really hoping they kept in touch. I would be surprised if Gamefreak made it so that they never saw each other again, like sure Looker is busy but he's still INTERNATIONAL Police, he would certainly keep tabs on her and visit. (Unless it wasn't safe for him to do so? hm)
Again, Pokemon Masters is not canon but is still the reunion we got to see. I would be surprise if there was no synergy between games, especially when Anabel could be an honorable mention. Like Emma HAS to have a diary to snoop in. (No, Looker hasn't lost his memories about Emma, I'm very much sure he and Emma have not at all lost contact)
And I wonder who gave her the Keystone!! Because she's got one right off the bat! I wonder is she has an assistant and if Mimi evolved or not! WHO GAVE HER THE KEYSTONE!!

Self-addressing of minor male characters pt. 2
A small addition
Let's continue, because I managed to miss something important
Thanks to user satsuha for bringing this to my attention.
Let's return to Nahyuta Sahdmadhi for a moment
In addition to "sessou", which he uses in the image of a strict "monk-prosecutor", he also has another personal pronoun that already extends to everyday life. This is the classic formal pronoun "watashi", written on kanji.

私はドゥルクに・・・・“救い”を 求めていたのかも知れません。
watashi wa do~uruku ni “sukui” o motomete ita no kamo shiremasen.
I may have been asking Durk for "salvation."
As satsuha pointed out, this pronoun slips out in moments when he loses his composure. But Nahyuta finally continues to use only "watashi" after he refuses to obey Queen Garam and confesses to his belonging to the "Dragons".

私は心の奥底でそのことを ずっと、ずっと・・・・
watashi wa kokoro no okusoko de sono koto o zutto, zutto
I've always, always known that deep in my heart...
___________________________________________
And one more young man, who (shame on me) I somehow forgot to mention. (Thank you, homicidal-lingonberry)
The renowned Interpol (ICPO) agent, Ro Shiryu (Lang Shi-Long)
Mr. Wolf uses the rude male pronoun "ore" (オレ), which suits his personality.

仮に。もしそこにオレがいたならば。事件は、起きなかった。
Moshi soko ni ore ga itanaraba. Jiken wa, okinakatta.
If I had been there. The incident would not have happened.

アイツは国際警察の同期でね. ヤツのムネンはオレが晴らす!
Wa kokusai keisatsu no dōki de ne . Yatsu no munen wa ore ga harasu!
He's a colleague of mine from the International Police. I'll clear his name!

いや! オレが許す!
iya! Ore ga yurusu!
No! I forgive you!
___________________________________________
In addition, I was asked to think about a personal tag to mark my posts. Well, now, to make it easier for you to navigate, I am introducing the tag #in the GKS universe together with croq
I'll add them to everything I've managed to publish a little later.
#ace attorney#gyakuten saiban#gyakuten kenji#ace attorney investigations#nahyuta sahdmadhi#shi long lang#ro shiryu#in the GKS universe together with croq

Philippine police arrested former President Rodrigo Duterte in Manila on Tuesday and sent him by plane to the Netherlands to face charges of crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court, President Ferdinand Marcos said. The global court in The Hague had ordered Duterte’s arrest through Interpol after accusing him of crimes against humanity over deadly anti-drug crackdowns he oversaw while in office, Marcos said in a late-night news conference.

How long would Death Note be if Light was actually a completely law-abiding, if vaguely narcissistic, citizen during the kira murders who just so happened to tick off L's "he's a serial killer" radar?
I mean, that's the thing, he wouldn't tick off L's radar
Why Did L Suspect Light Anyway
L does single-mindedly pursue the theory of "Light Yagami is Kira" to an utterly insane degree, even accepting for things like "he conveniently got amnesia for no reason" and "even though I put cameras in every corner of his house I didn't catch him" and "even though I handcuffed him literally to my side I couldn't catch him"
It is nuts.
However, I will give L credit, he didn't pick Light out of a hat.
L's initial theory was simply that Kira was in Japan and taking a stab in the dark probably the Kanto region. Light confirmed this for him due to an egotistical hissy fit with L having to put in very little effort.
This brought L to focus on Tokyo.
L further figures out fairly early on that Light has a student's schedule, not a working adult's in Japan, and this is because Light at the time didn't realize he could control the exact time at which a person dies and by the time Light changes his method it's already too late.
Now, what happened then is that Light intentionally tipped his hand. After Lind L. Taylor, Light took L's existence extremely personally and nursed quite the grudge and the vendetta. To "win" as Kira, to prove he's a god to himself and the populace, he must personally kill L. As a result, Light does many things that put him in danger/do nothing to help him as Kira just to have his chance at L.
The big one is that he starts using information only known to the Japanese police force. He intentionally does this so that L focuses enough on Tokyo and the police there that Light can get a firmer grasp on him, what Light didn't account for was that L would immediately narrow in on him and him alone or the lengths he'd go to in order to investigate Light as a suspect.
But thanks to Light, L did know that whoever was doing this had access to police information not available to the public. Now, Light was likely hoping L would assume it was a cop, but L expanded his search to the police and their family members, presuming that family members may have access to these networks due to insecure home practices and such (which Light does).
Now, L never explains canonically why he's so certain Light is Kira, but if I'm putting myself in his shoes I can take a wager as to why Light made him go "ding ding ding".
L's looking for the type of person who would become Kira. He already knows this person is Japanese, likely a student in a rigidly structured school day (so not in university), but someone with good enough English to have followed the Lind L. Taylor broadcast, someone savvy with the internet so as to kill international criminals.
What he also knows is that Kira is obsessive, manic, single-minded, and unquestioning of his beliefs. Kira is also someone with an absurd amount of faith in law enforcement and the justice system (Light... doesn't spend too long questioning whether or not the people he sentences to death are guilty of the crimes they were sentenced for/the life circumstances which might lead to someone committing a heinous crime and whether or not that matters) which makes sense for a workaholic policeman's son in homicide whose son idolizes him.
Not to mention that, aside from his hatred of L, Kira is extremely respectful of the police in general. He never goes after the Japanese police the way he does L (only the FBI agents tailing him) and it's clear that his great rivalry is with L, not the Japanese police, interpol, or any kind of cops.
So, we're looking at someone who really respects the law... without understanding what the law even is, why it exists, or why "no, Light, murdering thousands of people does not magically make you exempt".
Adults typically don't act like Light does. Even after the six-year time skip, Light's still obsessive but he has changed greatly from the boy he was. And Mikami, an adult who is inspired by him and kills in the same way is... a very different kind of person ultimately driven by a victim mentality.
My point is, it would make sense for L to suspect a teenager rather than an independent adult. The schedule lines up, the personality lines up, and while this is very likely a highly precocious individual (and someone who knows he's very clever) they still feel young.
So, L narrows it down to a set of families and look what we have: Light Yagami, brilliant young man who scores first in the country on every exam he ever takes, talented in athletics at a national level, has succeeded at everything in his life and is the pride and joy of his family, utterly adores his police chief father and has repeatedly shown interest in following his career path and even taken steps towards doing so as a high school student.
And L says "bingo".
But Back to Your Question
Putting aside whether or not anyone else would ever go as ham killing the types of people Light did for no particular reason (Misa, for example, would probably have only gone after her parent's killer. Mikami would have gone after his childhood tormentors/his mother. Higuchi went after corporate rivals) there's also whether they'd have that police information from Japan (probably not likely), and if they'd act the way that Light did.
Basically, while it is a nice thought... I don't think L would suspect Light in these circumstances as he'd ultimately be dealing with a very different person who acts in very different ways.
Light would never tip off his radar.

a new muse has joined the ranks: yū fujimoto ! *

❝ just admit it, you love me 'cause i'm a rascal ~ ! ♡ ❞
* Yu is pretty much an original interpretation of the character Lup.in t.he Thi.rd. I absolutely recommend the series and movies (both of which there are several!) ♡
BASICS:
Name: Yū Fujimoto, (Fujimoto Yū, 藤本 悠 )
Alias / Nickname: Arsene Lupin the Third, Lupin, Lupin III
Age / Birthday: Somewhere between 25 and 35 (per police reports), August 10th
Height: 5'10"
Gender: Female, she/her
Orientation: Bisexual, strong female lean
Occupation: Master thief
ABILITIES / SKILLS:
Thievery skills, such as: lock picking, stealth, glass cutting, sleight of hand, climbing, persuasion/acting, etc.
Racecar driving (a hobby of hers!), piloting a boat and other vehicles
Acrobatics / flexibility
Strategizing (a girl loves planning!)
Sharp shooting (mostly to disarm or injure)
Master of disguise (incredibly good at makeup and costuming, not to mention voice impressions/imitations)
Escape artist
Multilingual (Japanese, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Mandarin)
PERSONALITY:
Lupin is extremely goofy and doesn't take much seriously. She likes cracking jokes, even to the police! She thinks taunting them is funny but takes any arrests like a champ (mostly because she manages to get out!). She enjoys leaving notes and doodles behind at the sites of her heists. Humor, however, tends to be a huge defense mechanism for her and has a habit of pretending things are fine when they really aren't.
However, Lupin is an incredibly soft-hearted person. She's a hopeless romantic times ten and tends to get crushes easily. That being said, she does like to woo people and flirt. She'd never cheat, though, that'd just break her heart.
Does thievery for, well, the obvious reasons, but also because she loves a good challenge and chase. If it's not obvious, she's a thrill seeker. Despite her devil-may-care attitude, she's really a brilliant mind with a strong imagination.
Even if she's a thief, she has a strong sense of justice and fights injustice. She's even gone so far to foil the crimes of worse criminals. Lupin never steals from those in poverty, only seeming to target the wealthy and well-off. They can take the loss! She'd never harm a woman or child, however, even if the object in her sights is something really special. She stays away from murder and even helps those who are less fortunate.
Besides racing, she enjoys fishing, nightclubbing, gambling, playing pool, watching TV, and travelling. She really enjoys eating international cuisine and wine but also enjoys tea and coffee. She smokes on occasion, and she prefers the French brand of cigarettes Gitanes.
HISTORY:
Currently known as one of the world's most notable and notorious thieves, Lupin III is under the watch of the likes of Interpol and other government agencies. Likened to a Carmen Sandiego figure, her heists are big and bold, going from banks to museums to mansions alike. If she can steal it, she'll sure try!
Known for her use of gadgetry (some of which she invented/built herself!), she's quite a hard catch. However, she's not perfect, having been imprisoned many times. The real catch? She's hard to stay caught! She's escaped as many times as she's arrested.
Despite some witnesses stating she's died at least twice; Lupin is still somehow kicking. This is due to a mysterious amulet she'd plundered from a museum one day, giving her nine lives. Maybe the love Egyptians had for cats ruled in her favor! The amulet ended up back in the exhibit, but Lupin was alive and well despite losing her steal. She's on life number 3, lending itself to her name: Lupin the Third. She thinks third time's a charm, and maybe it is!
Unfortunately, with such infamy comes copycats. Lupin's been framed for grievous crimes, those of which she'd had to track down the perpetrators for. She prefers to clear her name herself, 'cause the legal system sure won't!
MISCELLANEOUS FACTS:
Lupin took her alias from the great fictional thief Arsene Lupin! She doesn't tend to use her real name unless she knows she can trust you. It also makes her harder to track! Good luck catching an Arsene Lupin the Third, suckers!
For when she has to do some serious undercover work, Lupin has a feminine persona named Ayumi. She often wears red and has short, blonde, and curly hair.
Lupin has a very notable laugh, ehehe!
Three is Lupin's lucky number! Things that happen in threes is a good omen to her.
She seems to have a lot of strengths? SO WHAT'S HER WEAKNESSES? Women, mischief, and extreme curiosity.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Philippine senators set themselves as an impeachment court Tuesday for the trial of Vice President Sara Duterte over corruption and other criminal allegations, but voted to send the raft of complaints back to the lower House of Representatives due to legal questions.
Dozens of activists protesting outside the Senate condemned Senate President Chiz Escudero and 17 other senators for voting to send back the impeachment complaint to the House instead of immediately bringing Duterte to trial. Five senators rejected the move.
The Senate action will delay the start of Duterte’s impeachment trial but it’s unclear what other impact it would have on her case.
“There is no `remand’ or `return’ in the constitution,” said Sen. Risa Hontiveros, who has demanded an immediate trial of the vice president. “Our obligation is to try and decide.”
Escudero said the move did not mean that the impeachment complaint was being dismissed and underscored that point by issuing summons for Duterte to appear before the impeachment court when the trial proceeds.
Duterte was impeached by the House in February on a range of accusations that include plotting to assassinate President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and large-scale corruption.
Many legislators who backed Duterte’s impeachment were political allies of Marcos and her impeachment deepened a bitter political rift between the two highest leaders of one of Asia’s most rambunctious democracies.
The vice president’s supporters have said the legislators violated the constitution and congressional rules to force her impeachment and prevent her from running in presidential elections in 2028, when Marcos’ six-year term ends.
Duterte, 47, is the daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte who was arrested in March and flown to The Netherlands to face charges of crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court.
The Hague-based court had ordered the former president’s arrest through Interpol, the global police organization, after accusing him of committing a crime against humanity over deadly anti-drug crackdowns he oversaw while in office.

He’s a hot-headed street racer, you’re the new cop in town. After chasing him for months, you're forced to work together on a city charity race. Sparks (and tires) fly.
Warnings: gun threats, tension, high-stakes pressure, emotional manipulation, violence implied, suggestive language

You’d always hated being the one in the chair.
No badge. No gun. Just electrodes, a pulse sensor, and IA agents who smiled like snakes in suits.
“Do you understand that any false or misleading answers will be used against you?”
You stared at the man behind the lie detector - Agent Rowe again, of course - and gave a slow nod.
“I understand.”
“Name?”
You said it.
“Badge number?”
You said that too.
“Have you ever willfully withheld intelligence from your superior officers?”
“No.”
Pause. The machine hummed.
Rowe’s lip twitched.
“Have you ever shared confidential police information with Max Verstappen?”
Your pulse spiked. You felt it. Felt the sweat prick the back of your neck.
“No,” you said.
Another pause. Longer this time.
You stared at the readout. It barely budged.
Rowe frowned, tapped the screen, then sat back.
You exhaled, voice low. “Told you.”
He took a long moment to answer. “Internal Affairs is dropping the investigation. Effective immediately.”
You stood, peeling off the sensors with careful fingers. “Glad we’re done playing games.”
“Oh,” he said, “you’re not done.”
They didn’t even let you change out of your blazer before pulling you into ops.
Max was already there, propped against a table, chewing gum, looking like he’d just rolled out of someone else’s bed and into a black tactical tee that fit him too well for your current mood.
He didn’t say anything.
Didn’t smirk.
Didn’t even look at you.
Good.
You weren’t in the mood to revisit kisses, lies, or the taste of whiskey on someone else’s tongue.
Captain Silva stood between you. “Interpol’s stepping back. Which means it’s our op now.”
“Ghost?” you asked.
“Confirmed. We’ve tracked the buyer to a safehouse in Eastgate. Word is, Ash is still with him. They’ve got the drive. Sale’s happening tonight.”
Max cracked his neck. “We’re not missing it this time.”
Silva looked between you. “You two are running point. Pick your teams. Get in quiet. Get out cleaner.”
You nodded once.
And for the first time in weeks, Max looked at you, really looked, and it wasn’t flirtation.
It was war.
Your team consisted of Moreno, two rookies with good aim, and one ex-military tactician.
Max brought along the loudest, cockiest guys from his Interpol circle.
“I see you’re going for subtle,” you muttered as one of them dropped his rifle with a clatter.
“Jealous your guys don’t have biceps?” Max replied.
You looked him dead in the eye. “I could take you down myself.”
He grinned. “Promises, promises.”
The plan was simple.
Split teams. You and Max go in first — posing as buyers, using burner IDs. Once Ghost confirms your cover and starts the exchange, you drop the code word: Cherrybomb.
Then the rest breach the perimeter.
No shooting unless fired upon. No slipping. No showing your cards.
And definitely no screwing up.
You hadn’t seen him in three days. Not since the kiss. Not since he bled on you and made jokes about dying “hot and mysterious.”
Now you were back in a car with him, pretending to be fake lovers for the sake of a sting.
He adjusted his cuffs.
You adjusted your holster.
“You gonna bring up the kiss?” he said finally, without looking at you.
“No.”
“You sure? Seemed like it changed something.”
You turned your head slowly. “It didn’t.”
He gave a hollow laugh. “Right.”
You didn’t speak again until you reached the warehouse.
Inside, the air was thick - not just with smoke, but tension. Ghost stood near the far wall, flanked by two armed men. Ash leaned against a pillar, watching you like a snake waiting to strike.
“You’re early,” Ghost said, his voice filtered through that smooth, mechanical distortion. Buyers don’t usually rush to the slaughter.”
You smiled. “We like to beat traffic.”
Ghost laughed. “Smart.”
He gestured to the table. The drive sat between stacks of Euros and what looked like blueprints for a shipment route. Max stepped forward, cool and casual.
You reached up to adjust your earpiece - signal for audio check - and waited for Max’s cue.
But he didn’t give it.
Instead, he said something you never expected.
“Payment first.”
Ghost tilted his head. “Excuse me?”
You froze.
That wasn’t the cue.
That wasn’t the line.
The plan was to say “Let’s see the goods” — not make demands.
Max had gone off-script.
You cut him a look sharp enough to slice concrete.
He didn’t blink.
Ghost narrowed his eyes. “Funny. The other buyers weren’t so… difficult.”
He nodded to his men.
Guns raised.
Your heart rate spiked.
“Shit,” you whispered, barely moving your lips. “You fucked it.”
Max shifted, voice low and furious. “I thought he was going for the decoy drive. I was improvising.”
“Well, your improv just got us made.”
Before either of you could move, Ghost spoke.
“No code word. No raid. Looks like we’ve got ourselves two cops.”
Ash’s grin was feral. “Knew it. Told you they’d crack.”
Then,,,
A gun cocked behind your head.
Another at Max’s chest.
And just like that, the op was blown.
You were zip-tied to a pipe in the back room, blood running down your cheek from a hit you didn’t fully register.
Max sat across from you, wrists bound behind his back, lip split, breathing shallow.
Silence stretched between you like a fuse about to snap.
Then...
“You got cocky,” you whispered, hoarse with rage. “You always get cocky.”
“I made a judgment call,” Max snapped. “I thought he was reaching for a kill switch.”
“We had the upper hand. And you gave it away because you couldn’t stand to follow my lead.”
He laughed bitterly. “It’s always about control with you.”
“Because control keeps us alive!”
“Then maybe don’t partner with someone you kissed like a death wish.”
You froze.
He knew it. Saw it.
Your silence was confirmation.
Before you could retort, the door opened.
Ash stepped in, wiping his hands on a towel.
“Well, well,” he said. “The hot cop and the wheelman. I always thought there was something kinky going on here.”
You glared. “You should run while you can.”
Ash crouched beside you. “Oh, I will. But first? We’re gonna play a little game.”
He pulled a phone from his pocket.
Live feed.
Your team, trapped at the perimeter. Signals jammed. Comm dead.
“Think they’ll still raid if no one calls them in?” Ash asked, smiling.
Max leaned forward. “If you touch her, I’ll kill you.”
Ash just laughed and walked out.
It was down to seconds now. Minutes, if that.
You looked at Max.
He looked at you.
And for the first time since the case began, since Crosswell, since that alleyway chase, since the goddamn kiss, you didn’t hate him.
You were just scared you might lose him.
“You get us out,” you whispered, “I’ll let you punch IA.”
He grinned. “I want that in writing.”
“Shut up and break your zip tie.”
He flexed his wrists - too slick with blood to hold. The plastic snapped.
You freed yours with the glass shard in your boot. He helped you stand.
Then you ran.
Out the back.
Into the line of Ghost’s guards.
But this time, you improvised.
Gun. Elbow. Takedown.
Max followed, fury in every step.
You grabbed the comm jammer from a crate and stomped it flat.
Crackle. Static. Then...
“Cherrybomb,” you gasped into the mic.
“GO!” Moreno shouted back.
Shots fired outside.
The raid had begun.
Later, after Ghost was hauled off in cuffs, after Ash screamed all the way into the van, after your teams secured the drive and the perimeter was quiet again.
You and Max sat on the steps of the warehouse, bruised, bleeding, exhausted.
You looked at him.
“I still don’t trust you.”
He wiped blood from his lip. “I don’t blame you.”
You nudged his boot with yours. “But you’re useful in a fight.”
He grinned. “Is that your way of saying I can stick around?”
You leaned back, eyes on the sky.
“That was my way of saying… don’t ever screw up like that again.”
He nodded. “Copy that.”
And for now, just for tonight, enemies would have to be enough.
