joel grabs the jacket closest to him, because what does it matter if it's his or grian's—they barely have their own clothes at this point. which is- that's another thing, he fumes as he slams the door shut behind him, pulling the hoodie over his head, if they already act like they’re something other than friends, what's the point in not making a decision? because- maybe that's all joel wants now: a fucking decision on what the fuck they actually are. if they don’t kiss when they’re sober, then they- they shouldn’t kiss when they’re drunk. it's all- it's too much.

he doesn't know where he’s going, really, just- away from grian, before he does something stupid like kill him. wouldn’t it just- wouldn't it be simpler if they just fucking talked about it all, instead of doing this stupid game of pretending not to remember what they do at parties, and that they borrow each other's clothes all the time because it's just- it's what everyone does? it's not- he knows it's not. maybe he’s done lying to himself about this, but grian certainly fucking isn't.

why does it all have to hinge on grian anyway? why can't- joel should have some say in this whole farcical situation—it's his bloody life, isn’t it? it's not like he can break up with him when they’re not even together, but- maybe he could insist that they at least drop whatever it is they've been doing this whole time. the thing in his chest aches enough to make joel want to start crying at the thought, but- what the fuck else is he meant to do? he can't keep doing this- he just can't. besides, he knows this is what lizzie or jimmy would tell him to do if they knew, and whilst they’re a little.. out there, at times, they tend to have good advice when it comes to matters this serious. 

so. how is he meant to do that? technically he could just go up to grian and tell him they need to cut it all out, but- god knows joel doesn't have the kind of self control to do such a thing. he wishes- a thousand things, really: that they'd both get their shit together and figure out what they are, that they could just go on pretending, that they'd never kissed in the first place. it's all such a mess.

joel drags his hand across his face, and sits on someone's garden wall. he’s not far from grian's place- he could just go back and tell him to get his shit together and either break up with him or date him. he could also.. just not. leave it for another day he knows won't come. it's what he’s been doing this whole time, isn’t it?

he huffs. he doesn't want to keep doing it. if they’re too cowardly to get together, then joel wants to at least move on- grian should grant him at least that much. in the mild night air, it occurs to joel that this is probably grian's jumper, since it smells so much like him. god, he doesn’t want to lose all this, but what choice does he have? 

weakly, he considers that the youtube channel might suffer if he and grian are more distant, but he knows it's just an excuse not to do anything. joel isn’t doing anything but delaying the inevitable by sitting here, and that's not gonna help him in the long run at all. he should really just go back and-

"joel?"

joel resists the urge to scream as he jerks around in the direction of the voice- only to see the man he so wanted to speak to anyway. "i- jesus, dude." 

grian gives a slight grin, clearly unsure of their standing after joel left. that makes two of them. "sorry, i just- i was worried."

"oh." of course he has to go and make it even harder- not like joel even wants to say this in the first place. stupid grian, being so incredibly lovable- which is not exactly the sort of thing he should be thinking in order to hype himself up here. whatever. "i- thanks."

there's a pause, and it's clear grian wasn't sure what he was actually going to do if he found joel. well, now's a good a time as any. "look, we- we need to do something about this."

grian blinks. "i- about what?"

"come on- us. or whatever the fuck us means right now." joel huffs, exasperated, and grian's eyes widen. "i don’t want to keep doing this, okay- i can't just- pretend it's nothing all the time."

within a second, joel knows what the outcome of this is going to be, and his heart sinks to his stomach as grian wraps his arms around himself. "i'm- i can’t- don’t make this any more complicated than it is." he says, almost pleading, and joel wants to cry. "please."

"i don't want to." joel says, and he wonders if he’s ever been this sad before. "i want- i want to make it simple."

"i- what are you doing, joel?" grian takes a step forward, as if to stop him, but joel isn’t about to take no for an answer one more fucking time. 

"we need to stop." joel says, and grian practically flinches at it which- only makes it so much harder to say. but he has to- he can’t keep doing this. "we can’t- it's too much, grian." his voice cracks a little, and joel doesn't even care. "so either- either we stop one way or the other, and you've made it pretty clear that you- you don’t want me enough to bother."

the words are out of joel's mouth before he can think about them, and grian is tearing up, but he realises he doesn’t regret them. maybe he just believes it. "so- so we stop. because you- i can’t just be tethered to you forever. i want- i want a life." joel throws his arms out helplessly. "so we're friends, and that's it- no drunk kisses, none of this-" he raises his hand, nails still painted with grian's colours. "whatever we were, it's over."

he almost says to stop visiting his dreams, but he doubts that would do anything other than make everything worse. besides, he established long ago that birdie is not grian- just some guy who looks like him. 

"right." grian says, clearly trying to hold it together, and joel's heart breaks clean in two. "that- i understand. you’re- you’re right, i-" he drags the sleeve of his hoodie (joel's hoodie, which only hurts more) across his eyes. "i’m sorry."

and then he’s gone- turning on his heel and walking straight back the way he came until he turns a corner and is out of sight. and joel-

joel sobs. because the one person he let himself love after years of keeping his guard up doesn't even love him enough to fucking talk about his own feelings- and now he’s just gone. fucking grian with his fucking emotional constipation and his fucking smile and every fucking awful, incredible thing about him. 

it's a while until his crying turns to hiccups and sniffling, and longer still until he gathers the energy to actually get up and head home. he might call jimmy over- joel has long since decided that there is no problem jimmy can’t alleviate just by being there, and he fucking needs that right now. 

the night isn't cold, and joel isn’t either. he pulls grian's stupid hoodie off and dumps it on the floor, not bothering to even look back at it as he walks away.

CHAPTER ONE

Logan Frost was a detective in a high end city chasing a criminal no one knew

He had just gotten home to his shared apartment and slammed the door hard as he was frustrated he didn't know if his roommate was home but he didn't care he was just so frustrated that anything could be the thing that makes Logan yell for the seventh time that day.

Not even a second had passed before Remus entered the room concerned but not quite surprised as this had become normal for him, Logan trudging into the apartment slamming the door hard behind him every afternoon after work.

Remus stepped further into the living room and watched as Logan collapsed onto the couch before looking over at him and sighing

"I apologize if I disturbed you" Logan says as his eyes flickered up to Remus'.

Remus nods "It's fine, don't worry about it. Rough day at work?" he walks over to the couch taking a seat in the middle of the couch

Logan nodded "yes this guy or girl I'm chasing is to smart for me like every time I think I get close they get fifty steps ahead" he ranted messing with his tie

Remus nods, staring at Logan hanging onto every word he says, listening intently as he ranted.

Logan let out a frustrated sigh "they stopped using there calling card so now i have no clue if im even chasing the right person" Remus nods along to every word.

"Mm.." Remus responded shortly, his eyes drifted off in another direction a knot twisted in his stomach tightening with each word.

Logan looks at the floor "it's like he knows everything I'm thinking and it's just frustrating"

Remus stared at him. His mind racing.He wanted so badly to tell him. To tell him why. Why they were fifty steps ahead. Why they seem to know everything. "Yeah. Sounds rough.." he mutters instead as his eyes drifting back to Logan's.

Logan took a deep breath "the only person I know it's not is you" he mumbled.

Remus' body stiffened.

He started fiddling with his hands. "Yeah..."

Logan decided to lean his head on Remus "even if it was you I'd have to make a difficult choice to make"

Remus glances back at him. "Oh..." Is all he said, what was he supposed to say to that? He could barely meet his eyes let alone tell him. Tell him that he was the cause of all his stress, all the angry door slams, the exhaustion.

He subconsciously placed an arm around Logan.

Remus nods not quite meeting Logan's eyes. "What would you have to do?" He asks hesitantly. Already knowing the answer. Dreading it.

"Well I'd either have to turn you in or realize that I should just give up" he said with a sad tone

"Well, you shouldn't worry, you need a well needed break, try to relax." He says quickly attempting to subtly change the subject.

Logan nodded a little "I can't take time off from this case to be honest I'd rather lose my job than anything" he mumbled yawning a little.

"Did you know you have pretty eyes?" Logan mumbles as he looks at Remus.

Remus turns to face Logan the question catching him off guard. He stared directly at him as his cheeks flushed a light pink.

Logan chuckled at the expression on his face "Thanks Remus for always being someone to talk to" he said as he reached to fiddle with the others hair

Remus smiles faintly. The guilt was back. Stronger this time. Washing over him in waves. "Hey. It's no problem, Logan. I'm always here to listen." He responds shortly. Not what he wanted to say but it was good enough for now.He inches closer to Logan.

Logan had closed his eyes leaning against Remus "Are you a criminal rem?" He asked randomly

Remus looks at Logan his whole body tensing.

Fuck. He couldn't know.. Could he? He was so careful..

"What?" He asked quietly, his heart sinking.
