❦ Just a little post of my faves on why they love you! I've always been a fan of Valentine's Day because I always have, and always will be a proud Lover Girl™!

❧ 𝔧𝔦𝔫𝔤 𝔶𝔲𝔞𝔫.

The tender eyed general can name a plethora of things that he loves about you... As a matter of fact, he could spend centuries just sitting in his ravishing garden, surrounded by hundreds of thousands of divine blossoms as he lists the qualities that he finds oh so endearing and appealing.

Frankly, that level of lovesick is a smidge maddening to some people. Others find the general's devotion incredibly charming. It's really a matter of perspective when you think about it.

However, all of his endless praise can be summed up to one thing in particular. You give him a sense of peace.

Pray tell, how many centuries of suffering has Jing Yuan endured? Well, it's difficult to pinpoint because the man is beyond adept at keeping his feelings in check, let alone actually revealing what makes him lose sleep at night. Jing Yuan has lost so much. He has endured far, far too much than one man ought to.

He may be a general, a warrior, a leader - but even he had his own dreams. His own ambitions. All of which became lost to time, strife and duty.

And all of his pain, all of the ache he feels in his shoulders simply melts away whenever you sit by his side. He is no better than a massive, spoiled house cat who just wishes to eat fine treats and be spoiled by your endless love and devotion.

If he could pick how he could die, all Jing Yuan would ever want is to be in your arms. His heart would be still, calm... The tranquility is just so heavenly, however could he give up on such a feeling?

❧ 𝔧𝔦𝔞𝔬𝔮𝔦𝔲.

Life is a strange road to trek on. You never really know what sort of perils you could come across. That was what made things so fun, Jiaoqiu would reckon.

Even if he no longer had the ability to actually see that road anymore...

The foxian was at least happy to know that his other senses had not been dulled thanks to his unfortunate predicament. He may be blind but he was not weak. He was too stubborn for that. Jiaoqiu still wished to fulfill his duty until the bitter end, no matter what the cost.

Stubbornness and an iron clad will can only get you so far though, especially if your body fails to cooperate. His spirit may be strong but his body simply is not.

And you would be there to hold his hand to tell him that it was all going to be alright.

As Jiaoqiu would break into massive coughs, his body giving into the horrible pain, he was still so happy to see that even after everything, you were still there for him.

Your loyalty had remained unshaken.

However could he thank you for this?

He was going to do everything he can to protect you, to love you in the way you deserve to be loved. Just thinking about you made his weak heart feel stronger again...

❧ 𝔰𝔲𝔫𝔡𝔞𝔶.

To be loved is to be heard. And to be heard is simply the greatest gift in the universe.

For as long as he could remember, that was all Sunday did. He would sit patiently as the person on the other side would tell him their biggest secrets, reveal their darkest sins. He had lost count of how many deplorable and depressing things he has heard throughout the years.

It had never even occurred to him that perhaps, he too needed to unveil his own darkness to another.

Without meaning to, he caved into that weakness. He did not even know that he had such a weakness. It was his job to listen, his job to guide, his job to be true. Even after joining the Astral Express, the least he could do was to hear the crew out on their many woes.

And yet, without any real effort, you had managed to break down his walls. You had shattered him for an evening, allowing him to speak his mind.

For the first time in forever, Sunday had been heard. He choked back the sobs, tried to bite down his despair but it was all pointless. All he had to do was to just look into your eyes and he was just so done. You held him like no one ever had, made him feel so vulnerable and weak but oh so happy.

Can you blame the poor little soul for becoming so attached to you after such an incident?

❧ 𝔭𝔥𝔞𝔦𝔫𝔬𝔫.

Everyone wants to be a hero.

In one way or the other, most - if not all - people wish to be acknowledged. They wish to hear the praise of their peers, they wish to know that they're doing good. Besides, being a hero has so many perks. People love you, they trust you.

And that same love is a shackle which you can't break out of.

That was how Phainon felt. He had no right to feel scared, he did not have the luxury of bowing out of a battle. If someone even suggested such an idea to him, Phainon would just let out a hearty laugh, his Adam's apple going up and down as his blue eyes shined bright with determination, the grip on his sword steady and more than ready to strike down his foes.

You knew better than to fall for that trick. Even with all that bravado, you could still sense the tiny quiver in his voice. You could see from the corner of your eye how his thighs shake ever so slightly.

Phainon was afraid. And once you had him cornered, you confronted him. Underneath the bright Okhema sky, you told him that it was alright to be terrified. That it was alright to have second doubts. That it was alright to be angry.

He may be a hero but he was still just a man.

And it was in that moment that Phainon realized that there was no need to keep up his hero facade with you. That he could just... be himself. Naturally, he was still cheerful, goofy and silly - teasing you was just too much fun.

But there was just a certain level of trust he felt. He knew that you would never judge him no matter what he did. Phainon was so happy to know that he had a sanctuary in your arms.

A dark corner of his heart trembled at the thought of losing that sanctuary. May the Titans bless him because he did not know what he would do if he lost you...

'OF COURSE' METHOD ♡

I think I found a new method based on those trending tiktok trend that goes like 'we're besties, of course we make fun of the same person for the 700th time and never get bored' or 'I'm the oldest child, of course I'm responsible for my siblings' mistakes' and blah blah blah. I made this as a method 😭 (don't judge me, it's just for fun)

This method mostly helps for rampaging or vaunting. You can use this as robotic affirming too.

THE METHOD ♡

Step 1: know clearly what you desire. Cus sometimes you prob be confused what you want, so know what you really desire.

Step 2: have a mental idea of it or a visual of it. If you can visualise, that's fine. If not, go on Pinterest to find it.

Step 3: Ask yourself, if you have what you already desire, what will you feel or do with it. If it's a material, how would you wear or keep it. If it's love or peace or something that's not materialistic, how would you feel everytime. Ask yourself and write it down or type it in your notes app.

Step 4: the actual method! suppose you wanna be an IT girl/boy, so you go affirming in front of the mirror or to yourself! If you have a friend who's manifesting just like you, try this trend in terms of manifestation with your bestie 😭 you need to affirm or rampage like ----->

Hello guys im back🌝

Aaannnnddd the answers will probably shock you. Def shocked me 👁️👄👁️

Chan - yes occasionally on the regular. Like if the phase is tight i see him going weekly or something, but always with a group of friends and always for fun, social interactions etc. Not to get drunk, pick up women and be a lil rascal.

Lee Know - no he prefers his solitude and peace and quite. Also the night is dark for a reason he says, when its dark you should be home sleeping. Instead of doing other stuff.

Changbin - feels socially pressured. If he goes he goes against his will. I feel like he may be in circles with very social people who like s bit wilder things than him, and even tho that's not so much his thing he wants to make his friends happy and spend time with them so he goes every once in a while but i don't see him staying long or being active, u probably wouldn't even notice he's there. Its really not his thing.

Hyunjin - he goes but rarely and its intentional. Like he doesn't go there just to let some steam of or just because someone invited him. He has to have a reason to go and a mission to fulfill. I see him going more to social networking partys. (The other guys probably too, like i don't see idols like them going to regular clubs😂). But for hyunjin i see when he goes out partying its something like an after party or a private party involving certain important people etc. He goes to things like this to put himself out there, make himself be seen, win opportunities, get acquainted with people that could be helpful to him etc. It's more like a job to him than leisure.

Han - Im seeing two polar opposites, struggled, something addiction. So if i have to string everything that im picking together i would say he either hates it and u CAN'T force him under any circumstances to go - or he suddenly loves it and get so addicted to it you can't keep him out if the "club". But that energy's really heavy and not nice at all. Reminds me of someone with a gambling problem - that type of addictive.

Felix - isn't up to his values, he has better things to do than that. I see him having went in the past while he was still "undeveloped" (his words not mine if y'all crazy felix fans come at me again im blocking ur asses IMMEDIATELY🫵🏻😤) bubnoe that he's ~mature~ stuff like thats not up to his standard. Seriously tho idk when that shift happened exactly but in the time frame of 6 months (since around i started my acc and have been reading on him) his energy has changed sooooo soooo much. I think he's going through a phase of discovering himself and building his own sense of self. As someone who can definitely relate and would say is already on the other side, i think his transformation/ rebirth hasn't really finished. Let me explain - in the past his energy felt really really strong but u couldn't see/dense it probably it was very mellow, unused, unseen by himself even, it was very very weird seeing someone with that much power not having it utilized. It felt unsettling (now i think i understand why but thats a topic for another time). He didn't really have a sense of self, was very easily swayed, influenced, and didn't really know much about himself or the world, he just felt like a little newborn and went along with the flow not really having a steering wheel i his hands he just sat on other peoples boats and floated on it and let himself be taken by wherever others brought him. This however is not the case anymore - he has his own boat, and now thinks that having a boat means the work is done and he has found his sense of self and knows who he is etc. But thats just the first step, the actual work/journey begins now. He has to learn how his boat works, learn to navigate tides, to know his surroundings to interact with other boaters (idk what they're called). U get where im going at? And oftentimes with people that have been denied their power, freedom and sense of self, and finally come to a point where they reclaim those they switch to a polar opposite of what they were before because that past self is what others were, not u, so the brain makes u go the opposite way to find urself. I see felix being in THAT stage. His energy once very fluid & accepting, suddenly feels very rigid and convinced of certain beliefs and values, he doesn't seem to have the ground to be so convinced in yk. Because that switch is so sudden. So yeah in short i believe he's on a journey of discovering himself and now he's experiencing the stage of the "other side". Eventually he'll come to a crash out, live the consequences from the breakdown and within the healing period he'll actually find his true sense of self and begin from then nurturing that seed and "growing himself" more and more as time goes. Thats my prediction.

Seungmin - loves them 👁️👄👁️ it's really his thing i think he's a hidden charmer. Like ... an actual actual charmer a casanova, a don juan. Those a mainly directed to seducing women tho, i don't see him having that reputation, he's just overall charming and can attract lots of people, feels good in that energy can entertain and just overall he's made for parties and clubbing apparently. It gives him energy & confidence.

I.N - loves clubbing too and does it quite often. Like i see him whenever he can he goes out could be as often as every night or every other night. Definitely a couple times a week. There's not much else to pick up on here, idk why he öikes it so much or what he does when he goes out but yeah he does it often.

A lot of people are screaming throuple and just writing the porn (which I get! It’s fun!). But reading them come is not enough for me. lol Toxicity is hot until it’s just damaging and sad for everyone. I want real happiness for these three weirdos.

The end of the film was meant to be the very beginning of something. Just the spark of an idea of them coming back to one another. But the real work starts after.

And I think it would probably be a step-by-step thing.

I can see Patrick and Art working to draw closer, with that strong foundation of their childhoods to build off of. Obviously having to resolve the hurt that so much time and distance caused them, and both being willing to forgive. But it’s clear at the end of the film that the door is open for that. They grew up together. There’s a real root of knowing that I think could carry them through the toughest parts early on. Their relationship evolving feels possible.

And Tashi and Art’s marriage would find some breathing room and maybe even some renewed delight for having Patrick present and loving on them both. Kinda seeing each other again through his eyes type thing. Remembering they’re more than who they have been to each other for over a decade (both operating in one mode to survive, never quite enough for each other -- not totally fulfilled and not appreciated in their fullness).

I don’t think Patrick and Tashi would be having sex at this point, but I can see like….tennis dates where they bicker. Just them all learning how to be in each other’s space for extended periods of time and enjoy it.

And maybe Art wouldn’t resent Tashi so much for not being able to give him everything (so much has been taken from her — she just doesn’t have all that much left. She’s been doing her best.) and maybe Tashi would feel more at peace seeing them play each other and knowing Art is really loving tennis, not just playing for her. Connecting with them both in that space and finding joy in tennis again, so it’s not just routine and pain and loss for her.

With that healing happening concurrently (with therapists as support, of course), I think they’d get far. And then once those relationships are more secure, once Art and Tashi learn how they relate to each other when he isn’t winning for her (which would be something new. They don’t know what that looks like yet!) then Patrick and Tashi, having learned way more about themselves in relationship and how to communicate, might start working on their side of the triangle lol.

I could see them all exploring and working out the intimacy over time — not just sex, but intimacy -- what do they each need and how do they need it? And kink too, the various ways they each want/need to give or receive so they all feel truly satisfied.

And of course they’ll be partners co-parenting. All of them.

I can see Tashi finally grieving her injury, the life she lost, and rediscovering her love of tennis, not to win, but for the joy of being on the court. Her sobs the first time she plays again and it’s not competitively, just a little volley, but it’s like she’s finally alive again. Reminding herself she’s a leader in tennis the space still, that she can build success in that world even without Art’s career, but maybe it looks different. I see a healed Tashi learning to enjoy teaching kids. Taking on more protege. And letting Art and Patrick come help at her tennis camps.

Art retiring like he said he wanted, running the foundation as Tashi steps back. Realizing that he’s actually pretty good at this business thing and going back to school for a Master’s in nonprofit leadership. Meeting new people. Making friends (that aren’t Patrick). Getting invited to a pottery class and seeing he loves to work with his hands. Playing tennis with Patrick on the weekends.

And my heart for stay-at-home dad Patrick. Who always forgets to change over the laundry and leaves his keys everywhere and puts the babies' shoes on the wrong feet. But my god he loves those kids so goddamn much. Patrick learning to cook for the family and getting really good at it like he does anything he hyper-focuses on. Patrick finally having a home with the two people he loves most and figuring out how to create some routine and stability for himself within that container.

The love in that home. Ugh. I think it’s possible! I think they can do it! It just takes work.

It is actually super thematically important that the Gumlee Subplot is, like, the Fluffiest Fluffy Coffeeshop AU in existence.

Because the whole universe-ending danger Fionnaworld faces is, like, to me it reads very much as a metaphor for the value of art and creative works that are self-indulgent?

Like, the whole Problem is that Prismo is not supposed to use his powers of Creation for his own personal enjoyment - he’s only supposed to use it to grant Ironic Wishes for others. Metaphorically, I think this is like a Creative making art for a studio or some other kind or employer, or for the sake of some specific audience or something.

And while Prismo found some creative fulfillment in his job, he also wanted to make something for himself, something private, something self-indulgent. And thus Fionnaworld was born. A personal creative project made with no other consideration but the artist’s own sense of fun and pleasure.

Which is very appropriate considering how in the real world Fionna and Cake, while it grew into more than that, it was originally just the personal lil’ creative doodles of Natasha Allegri did for fun while she was working as part of the AT Crew.

In the eyes of the Scarab, and apparently the greater cosmological laws that he enforces - the existence of Fionnaworld is an ‘abomination’. Prismo shouldn’t be allowed to use his powers of creation for anything but his designated role of creating for the sake of others.

And it seems like the resolution of the whole Scarab and Prismo plot thread is going to be on some level a reinforcement of the value and importance of creative projects - or whole universes - that are born out of self-indulgence and a desire to have fun and nothing more. You know, maybe it's not the worst thing in the world for Prismo to do something for fun, Fionnaworld clearly grew into something more than just God's self-indulgent doodles... something like that...

So it seems only appropriate that our main representation of Fionnaworld once the plot kicks into gear, the thing that gives the viewers a face and a personal angle to the unfathomably monumental task of saving a whole universe - is a Fluff-tastic Coffeeshop AU.

In many ways the icon of silly indulgent fiction that exists just for personal pleasure.

Especially as it contrasts against the generally much darker and grimmer ‘Authorized Universes’ we’ve seen.

Of course, not everyone creating silly fanfics for just their own sake is gonna create peaceful low-conflict Modern AUs. I bet there’s tons of AT fans creating fanstuff for their own sakes that are going to make stuff that’s just as heavy and dark as Vampireworld or even Extinctworld. Sometimes self-indulgence looks like angst and pain.

Buuuutt, the Fluff-heavy fanfiction and Coffeeshop AUs are still associated with wish-fulfillment and self-indulgent fiction in a way that really feels thematically important.

Despite his devotion to MC, Caleb is also flighty, often leaving her for long stretches of time in order to build a life he thinks can meet both their needs.

Sevens are always in motion. Many of Caleb's seemingly contradictory qualities end up making sense and coming into focus when seen through the lens of a type Seven.

For example, his fun-loving and whimsical nature when he's with MC is typical of a Seven with a Six wing. Charismatic, positive, encouraging, supportive--these are all genuine qualities of this type.

Sevens are dynamic, adaptable, energetic--but also have a tendency to run from their problems and refuse to confront deeper-seated issues, which may cause lasting damage to their relationships.

Academic ease, relational difficulty

Caleb's seemingly effortless and nonchalant excellence at Aerospace Academy and at the DAA is typical of Sevens:

Because they are able to pick up many different skills with relative ease, it becomes more difficult for them to decide what to do with themselves. As a result, they do not always use their ability as they would if they had to struggle to gain them. When Sevens are more balanced, however, their versatility, curiosity, and ability to learn can lead them to extraordinary achievement. (pg 236)

However, this contrasts with relationship difficulties:

[...] they are out of touch with their inner guidance [...] They do not feel that they know how to make choices that will benefit themselves and others. [...] they try to keep their minds busy all of the time. As long as they can keep their minds occupied, especially with projects and positive ideas for the future, they can, to some extent, keep anxiety and negative feelings out of their conscious awareness. [...] Sevens are compelled to stay on the go, moving from one experience to the next, searching for more stimulation. (pg263)

We see this in how Caleb tends to have his "head in the clouds". He's constantly dreaming up futures for him and MC, talking about finding a paradise just for them, a place that can be safe from the world. By constantly looking upwards and forwards--towards the sky, then the Deepspace Tunnel--he can keep his anxieties out of conscious awareness.

Ironically, it is his fear of losing MC that causes him to leave her so often--he's so busy keeping himself moving that he sometimes fails to appreciate the opportunities available in the moment.

What's the goal?

"On a very deep level, Sevens do not feel that they can find what they really want in life." (pg 263) This can lead to a "trial and error" approach. There's a sense of "maybe this next thing will work, maybe this will satisfy me".

We see this in Caleb's drive and work ethic at the Academy, DAA, and the Fleet--despite his seeming nonchalance, he's eagerly trying out the next thing, and the next thing. He loves the feeling of flying, but that's still not enough to satisfy him. He seeks more and more dangerous scenarios, seemingly heedless of the danger, and it's not until the nearly-failed mission depicted in Pathless Realms that Caleb finally confronts that his constant searching for satisfaction might take away the thing he cares about the most--his relationship with MC.

We also see this in Caleb "trying on" the "boyfriend" role when he asked MC to pretend to be his girlfriend when he was in college. He's been yearning for her, of course, but I think it's fair to see this as something that's initially playful and from a place of curiosity on his part, which he then later realizes leads to deeper feelings. He wants to try out different dynamics between them and see what "sticks".

But this constant shifting can make it harder to enjoy the moment:

[...] as Sevens speed up their pursuit of whatever seems to offer freedom and satisfaction, they tend to make worse choices, and they are less able to be satisfied because everything is experienced indirectly, through the dense filter of their fast-paced mental activity. The result is that Sevens end up anxious, frustrated, and enraged, with fewer resources available to them physically, emotionally, or financially. (pg264)

Genuine optimism

Unlike characters such as Professor Lucius, whose affection should be considered with great suspicion, Caleb's optimism and cheerfulness are not fake. They can be jarring compared to the problems he's ignoring, but they're not feelings he "puts on" just to manipulate MC.

[...] Sevens are extremely optimistic people--exuberant and upbeat. They [...] desire to fully participate in their lives each day. They are naturally cheerful and good-humored, not taking themselves too seriously, or anything else for that matter. When they are balanced within themselves, their joy and enthusiasm for life naturally affect everyone around them. They remind us of the pure pleasure of existence--the greatest gift of all. (pg 264)

The childhood pattern

Sevens generally feel cut off from parental/maternal nurturance at a young age, and so come to the conclusion that they need to "nurture" themselves. ("I am not going to sit around feeling sorry for myself waiting for somebody to take care of me. I'll take care of myself!" pg265)

Caleb, being not only an orphan but a test subject (who almost certainly remembers that he was experimented on, since there's no signs of him having memory problems before the Toring chip) quite literally did not get any of the nurturance he needed as a young child. He's ten or eleven by the time Josephine rescues him and MC. MC, being a few years younger, and also losing her memories, has more of an opportunity to bond to Josephine on a deeper level and feel some of that nurturance while she's still in a critical period for it.

The entertainer

Notably, Caleb also takes on the role of taking care of MC as well. This is expressed in looking after her happiness (as is very clear in Decoherence) and so Caleb takes on the role of "entertainer", which is also the name of the Seven with a Six wing subtype. Caleb is always finding or buying toys for MC, taking her places, cheering her up, etc. He often does so without wanting or expecting recognition, as her happiness is enough for him.

A lot of Caleb's easygoing charm, especially with his classmates and colleagues before the explosion, is well described by the Six wing.

Notably:

Looking for strong experiences, they are often either in a relationship or looking for one. They do not like to be alone but have high requirements of intimates. They often have conflicts between a desire to move on to greener pastures and a fear of losing connection.

Caleb's yearning for MC provides this kind of strong experience, though he fears his own neediness and intensity when they're together, which leads him to pull back from her at times. His "greener pastures" aren't another relationship, but rather, this imagined future where they can be safe and alone together. Yet, he also fears losing connection with MC where she's at now.

Caleb at work

When it comes to planning his life and engaging with the Farspace Fleet, Caleb leans more into his Eight wing, exhibiting more traits of the 7w8, The Realist. He's strategic, organized, practical, tough-minded. He still retains the charm of the Six Wing, cultivating a calm politeness with his direct reports, but when necessary, he is not afraid to act decisively and violently.

These traits are not entirely due to the Toring chip, and are to some extent part of Caleb's innate personality. In fact, we see in Serpent's Cast (World Underneath) that Caleb's able to "flip a switch" even before the Toring Chip, becoming cold and decisive in order to protect himself and MC.

So his fears that MC will reject the "new Caleb" are not just from the Toring chip--they are also from him becoming less able to hide his own "darker" traits from himself and from her.

The Sexual Seven

Wisdom of the Enneagram presents three different "instinctual variants" (sexual, self-preservation, social) which add further nuance to how Sevens show up in the world.

In all of their activities and interactions, they want to experience the intense charge of being alive. They see life through heightened imagination, idealizing themselves, their relationships, and reality. [...] [They are] magnetized by people whom they find interesting or refreshing. [...] They feel temporarily dazzled and hypnotized by the object of their curiosity [...] Sexual sevens enjoy the excitement of fantasying about future adventures and shared interests with the new person. [...] Less healthy Sexual Sevens [...] fear commitment, preferring the intense feelings of infatuation that occur in the earliest stages of a relationship. (pg269-269)

So, we see that part of why Caleb is so hesitant to express his feelings or initiate taking things to the next level with MC is that he craves the intensity of the longing and yearning. He truly fears commitment, and feels more comfortable with admiring MC from afar. Even the intensity of his shame and conflict is stimulating and grounding on some level. When he is physically away from her (such as at the Academy or on DAA/Fleet missions) he's able to indulge in the fantasies of their future and the idealized version of their relationship.

This is part of why Caleb's own thinking leans into the "forbidden love" angle. As we see in the Sexual Seven, that intensity of emotion is part of what he's seeking. There's a fear that, if he gets what he wants, it won't actually satisfy him.

To a lesser extent, Caleb also demonstrates the self-preservation instinct, being one to search out activities to do with MC and ensuring that they both always have what they need. (pg267) (Him cooking, doing the grocery shopping, etc is part of this instinct.)

Wake up call: The grass is always greener

Caleb (as with all Sevens) has a tendency to focus too much on the future, on the next thing. He's thinking about what happens when the next disaster occurs and how to accumulate the skills and resources that he'll need to ensure that both his and MC's needs are met. He's dreaming about the imagined, heightened future of them being able to live in a place that's peaceful and just for them.

Caleb's big wake-up call, which we're starting to see in his story, is for him to realize that focusing on this idealized future is cutting him off from MC in the moment. This is especially demonstrated in Hidden Waves, where his focus on forming himself into the perfect protector without needs cuts him off (at first) from MC's affection and presence. She stubbornly asserts herself into his life, and he begins to see that even when he's sick, that can be time they can cherish together, vs trying to just hurry along until he's well again.

Caleb has to figure out how to be present in the moment, and to bond with MC and open himself up while he's still stuck with the Fleet, while there are still Wanderers, while Ever is still threatening the planet, etc. If he tries to wait until this hypothetical perfect future is achieved, he'll lose her.

The Passion: Gluttony

Sevens metaphorically embody the "sin" of gluttony by "wanting to stuff the self with external gratifications in response to the experience of feeling frustrated, empty, and needy."

We see this in Caleb's dogged insistence on changing the subject, proposing a new activity, or moving on as if everything's fine when MC expresses doubts. It's hard for her genuine concerns and hesitations to fully make it into Caleb's brain, because his mind is going a mile a minute in order to try to stay ahead of the emotions he's running from.

Anxiety leads to restraint

As Sevens start to feel out of control, they begin to show traits of average Ones, especially the sense of needing to rigidly control the self. Caleb's intense moral shame around his attraction to MC is an example of this kind of self-restraint. Instead of exploring these emotions, he tries to lock them down.

This intense attempt at self-control also extends to MC, when we see him make reference to keeping her in Skyhaven and telling the world she's dead--Caleb believes that if he can simply control all the inputs, then the outputs will be what he needs them to be.

He doesn't make this suggestion out of dominance or possession per se, but rather out of a misguided effort to force everything to stay on track.

They begin to work harder, feeling that they alone can do the job properly, and attempt to impose limits on their behaviors. [...] They may get either more restless and scattered, or more self-controlled and rigid, in which case their usual vivaciousness can give way to a grim seriousness. (pg280)

This is largely why I consider the Toring chip's impact on Caleb's personality to be more or less beside the point. The grim seriousness, the rigidity, the control--these are all common reactions of Sevens to stress. The desires for control he expresses aren't really what he wants--they aren't a primary part of his personality the way they would be for, say, an Eight.

When MC confronts him and says that she doesn't want to be hidden away from the world, we see his resolve buckle quickly--he acknowledges that he doesn't know how to take care of her (said another way, he doesn't know how to make choices that will benefit himself and her, as is the key struggle of a Seven out of touch with their inner guidance) and the surge of emotion causes the Toring Chip to kick in.

Lost in the role

The social role of the Seven is the "energizer"--keeping excitement and positive emotions high. Notably, in Decoherence, Caleb is literally MC's battery. His actual, physical job is to energize her. More metaphorically, the first thing he wants to do when they escape is to show her new experiences and to introduce her to happiness.

Sevens, especially of the Entertainer sub-type, often feel as though they have to perform to be expected. They come to believe that their energy, positivity, and accomplishments are the only things others want from them, which can lead them to double-down on the very things that are preventing them from connecting with others. They expect that their pain, sadness, or confusion will cause them to be rejected and discarded, thus leaving them deprived and in pain (their deepest fear).

In Caleb's case this manifests as a need to be needed by MC. If she doesn't need him, then how can he find security in his role as her energizer, supporter and protector?

The more frantically Caleb tries to maintain his role at the Farspace Fleet (which is literally necessary for his survival) while also being the perfect protector/entertainer for MC, the more rigidly he attempts to control himself and the more that internal conflict drowns out MC's genuine attempts at connection.

Growth direction: feet on the ground

As Sevens get more in touch with their inner guidance, they naturally become more grounded and observant like healthy Fives. Their minds quiet and they allow more of the world in, and are able to better enjoy the moment. Their vibrant, energetic nature becomes more soothing and sincere, enabling a profound appreciation for the people around them and the joy of existing.

We're still early in Caleb's content, but we're starting to see him find moments like this. Hidden Waves is a great example of MC's presence helping him to calm down and spend a peaceful moment together. In Exclusive Aftertaste, Caleb is beginning to understand that it's important to "enjoy good food while it's fresh"--ie, seize the moment instead of living in the future.

In conclusion

Caleb and Zayne are foils for each other, and they both grapple with intense conflict around their relationship with MC, their fear of rejection, and their fear of their own nature.

Caleb presents as outwardly much more chaotic, presenting seemingly contradictory personality traits. These traits are two sides of the same coin, and the speed with which he flips between them is characteristic of Sevens' intensity, dynamism, and high-speed way of moving through life. While the Toring chip makes matters worse, it's not the origin of these traits as we see them in Caleb before the chip is installed.

While Caleb's efforts to control MC may originally appear to stem from a more stereotypical place of male dominance/possession, that's not the case. Their true root is his attempt to control himself to manage the stress of his life, as well as an inability to see himself as worthy of love if he is not "providing the benefits" expected of him.

The more he's able to slow down and enjoy the present moments with MC, the more he'll find that his needs actually can be met without a grandiose plan for the future.

gojo only ever being needed and not wanted broke my hearttt noooo. i just love gojo x mundanity so so much. all he wants in life is a quiet peaceful life with someone who just sees him without his six eyes. there will always be something so bittersweet about that mostly cuz he'll never allow himself to have that life completely:/

i've seen that one post going around that's like "“if i cannot be wanted, i will be needed and if i cannot be needed, let me be used until there’s nothing left of me” and although i don't think gojo is actually that self-sacrificing, i do see a bit of him in there.

like, we know for sure he treasures "youth" and in particular his own "youth" very deeply. we see the s2 opening with him in high school with geto and the other students, doing just regular things, looking genuinely happy and having tons of fun.

gojo used to smile and laugh with people. people who were his peers. and maybe that was mostly possible because they were peers then, instead of him being the pinnacle of sorcerer society. when kenjaku shows up he gets a minute-long internal flashback of all those old times. it meant a lot to him.

on the other hand, though, gojo is absolutely a bit of a bully deep down. he was still a jerk sometimes in high school (though he DID have a good heart - hence the thing with riko) and he clearly has fun when he's fighting curses lol. he takes a lot of joy in his power, and why wouldn't he? it's kinda all he's got going for him. self-fulfilling prophecy and all.

ngl a bunch of the lines in that piece came from this yandere!gojo wip that's still in the drafts. basically gojo wants a non-sorcerer to play house with and he's ecstatic about this whole "relationship building" thing. he has no hobbies bc everything is easy for him, but his personality - and the circumstances - make winning your love an actual challenge that he can have fun with.

but internally his logic is actually kinda sad and understandable. gojo is worried he'll go insane like geto did. lose all sympathy for regular people, and for other sorcerers, too - maybe his own students.

and if gojo loses it, who's going to stop him?

if gojo loses it, and gives up on humanity like geto did, then what was the point of killing geto in the first place?

that can't happen if he has a non-sorcerer lover. and honestly? i do think gojo genuinely does like people, in the general sense. he likes getting specialty sweets and playing baseball. he takes his students out for meals. the memories we see of his youth? him in the arcade, walking home from school, eating out with his friends.

i think he likes ordinary, mundane things a lot, even if he loves the other parts of his life. he probably loves bugging baristas and fast food employees and passerbys in his life. he is lonely at the top, but with regular people, he can pretend he isn't.

it's tragic, but in a way, it's also an issue of his own making. i don't buy gojo's whole "you can admire a blooming flower, but you can't ask it to understand you" crap. gojo, loneliness and isolation are a part of the human condition. you are NOT the first or only person who feels this way. i'm optimistic that he could get through it if he tried... if gege didn't have it out for him LMAO

Hiiii! So, I just started interacting with the fandom I realized there's a lot of Johanna x Kaisa shippers (Sketchbook is the name ship?), and I wanted to know what's the appeal of the ship cus it never occurred to me to ship them lmao

Hello! Welcome to the fandom!

That’s a totally fair question, I’ve been a sketchbook shipper for years so to be honest shipping them is just second nature to me now, but let me uhhh try and remember some of my (and the rest of the fandom’s) reasoning. gonna put this under a cut bc it got kind of long I’m sorry 😭

Soo my favourite reason and the thing I never shut up about is that Johanna and Kaisa fulfill VASTLY different roles in Hilda’s life and in the show itself - Johanna is coded to be this very safe stable character for Hilda who isn't all that into her adventures (I know she breaks out of this image later in the show, but it’s still a big part of her character. like. for the most part she just wants some peace at home with a cup of tea please) and Kaisa is there specifically to enable Hilda’s adventures and point her at the dangerous thing. and character dynamic-wise, this is just. very funny. POV you’re a single mother just trying to see her child to the next birthday and the weird lady at the library keeps giving her books that can raise the dead. they’re at such odds by design that it sets up a ton of potential for how they could start off on the wrong foot (enemies to lovers babeyy) or have to try and meet each-other in the middle. and they’re both involved enough in Hilda’s life that it really feels like only a matter of time til they get thrown together by one of Hilda’s shenanigans

also, design and personality-wise they have an “opposites attract” kind of vibe I think? for instance Johanna is outwardly very friendly and a bit of a people-pleaser, but takes absolutely no shit when Hilda is in danger, and Kaisa puts up this dark mysterious persona, but deep down is quite insecure and anxious (and also more caring than she lets on - you can tell she’s also got a bit of a soft spot for Hilda when the kid isn’t actively trying to steal swords) so it’s fun to imagine how Johanna and Kaisa’s personalities could play off each-other when they have such different outward appearances but are more similar deep-down.

Theres also some fun angst reasons off the top of my head:

Johanna has had absolutely nothing but bad experiences with magic and Kaisa is an actual witch, and is partially responsible for some of those experiences (tide mice, etc). you can spin like 1 million scenarios out of this and people already have and it's great bdhsgdjh

Johanna has spent most of her life being abandoned by the people she trusts (her parents, Anders) and Kaisa has been shown to (unwillingly) shut people out and withdraw for fear of not being good enough. You could read them as both having difficulty trusting and maybe being able to help eachother through their insecurities together

to steal a very good point I saw @the-hilda-librarians-wife make a while ago, they’re both outcasts in their respective communities - Johanna struggles to fit in with the other parents and isn’t shown really having any friends in the show, and Kaisa gave up being a ‘proper’ witch to be the keeper of the books, and the other witches clearly look down on her as a result. They lead vastly different lives, but do have similarities that they could connect over and support each-other through.

ALSO - now we know Johanna is also magical and lost a part of herself from having her memory wiped - there is that potential for them to find the things that they’ve been missing in eachother. Kaisa deals with all kinds of magic shenanigans as her day job and could arguably do with some peace and someone to lean on, but she isn’t shy about magic/danger/any other weirdness. Johanna has an adventurous side that was repressed along with her childhood memories for years that still feels very distant to her. They could help bring these things out in each-other and bring a bit of balance to each-other’s lives.

And, coming back to what I said about them having different roles in the show, it’s just very fun to picture them as a co-parenting duo for Hilda. normal mom & chaotic mom. Hilda would be absolutely unstoppable

Finally, imo Kaisa is absolutely a lesbian (years ago I made a joke post on here saying smth like “did the Hilda team know they were making a wlw icon here” and someone from the team replied with “yes” JDKHSJ) and I’ve been in the fandom long enough to know the effect that Johanna has on those, I rest my case 😌

I hope that explains it kind of!! also if anyone else has any other points to make for why they like the ship feel free to add on!!
