What if we were both magic prodigies and it otherized us in different ways and we devoted ourselves to protecting a family member who has general other goals & priorities. What if we both did self-sacrifical devotion in opposite ways.
What if we were dark mirrors of each other and where I've grown overcontrolling you've grown complacent. What if, bought as a servant into a pretty loving home, ownership and control is what love looks like to me, and to you neglected and lonely growing up, love is gratefully taking any scraps of it youāre lent.
By belonging to someone, even if she comes back injured or fails at finding Delgal, she feels like she belongs and is cherished, by owning someone he feels safe in them not leaving him.

Sheās whatās tethering him do you see⦠And heās the only thing giving her direction and purpose in her state. She needs a compass and he needs a support.

Theyāre both so out of it š Itās the weirdly intense and unearned mutual trust and reliance on each other?? Theyāre each otherās weird little comfort codependent teddy bear. Or at least they were headed towards that before SHE DIED THEN HE DIED THEN THEY BOTH FORGOT ABOUT EACH OTHER AND NEVER MET EVER AGAIN. Though sheās also the guard attack hound keeping him safe⦠And vice versa he heals her and can rewrite her very being with just one wave of his hand. Theyāre both so so mentally and physically vulnerable both but they cling onto each other. They canāt perceive things accurately but despite it all someway somehow they stumble into something closer to resembling companionship just before they both die. Falin is just that kind and Thistle is just that lonely. Overworked.
We both havenāt lived for ourselves in a very long time, havenāt we.

They both have a similar devotion to the people they love but again the difference is that Thistle starts overtsepping while Falin is self-effacing. The other difference between them is that people care about Falin <3 People have given up on Thistle long ago, and he has given people reasons to, while people refuse to give up on Falin. Yaad has a mini arc about it dw about it itās ok heās not all alone in the end šš He reached out for Marcilleās hand but they already all wanted to help him, they just had to be given the chance to, Yaad just had to be given the chance to, itās okay Iām okay
Hey what if we learned to get in touch with our own identity and the world around us and living in the present again through being in the worst codependent situationship ever.
Falin and Thistle sitting in a tree, sucking on flowers together because theyāre h-u-n-g-r-yĀ ššš

I bet heās only ever thought of flowers as useless ornaments. Weak weeds. But she shows him theyāre tasty and useful and good and pretty in their own right too and deserve existing without proving their worth and waaa <33 Thistlesā¦... Did you know thistles taste sweet if you remove the thorns and eat them?
"Even as a chimera, her kind nature remains" you canāt suppress her in the way that matters. You canāt soothe him in the way that matters. Itās doomed. Youāre doomed. Itās all doomed. Save me.

prev rb reminded me actually but i cant believe writing is fun now. like the process has become Fun. research is fun, gathering ideas is fun, engaging w related media is fun, wordcraft and character interactions are fun, integrating themes is fun, outlining plot is fun, the editing process still makes me want to light myself on fire but i'm learning to view my own work more objectively and appreciate imperfections. it's overall Fun. thank fucking god
#the only thing between me and publishing these fics rn are the editing process... hauling myself over that mountain#in particular i just really like writing the melini boys at least in the way they exist in fairytale au#probs bc yaad's pov has lots of room for introspection and detached dreamy observations i just think that's rlly fun to write shdjdhdh#actually haven't written much thistle pov except for the postcanon piece but i like his dialogue a lot#and having also written falin pov at this point i can say that yaad š¤ falin š¤ thistle are team dissociation lets go#which might be why i havent written laios pov yet even though he is a cornerstone of that set in my mind. where to even begin w that man#need to complete the melinis + toudens set but ill figure it out later ig#also would love a yaad + toudens thing but i havent thought of much on that yet outside of teleserye au#roomba writes

Now that itās the end of the year, I would like to thank the dun meshi cast for all theyāve taught me:
Senshi: Thank you for teaching me how to probably care for my nutrition, and that a little food goes along way. Iāve learned that patience is key and self-care can not only better yourself, but the others around you as well.
Laios: Thank you for inventing autism and teaching me that indulging in my weird kinks and fantasies are OK actually.
Marcille: Thank you for teaching me that itās OK to be a girl failure and that going against with the government is actually morally correct.
Chilchuck: Thank you for teaching me to not open up about my emotions until it boils over in an incredibly important moment.ļæ¼
Izutsumi: Thank you for helping me understand that Iām actually better than everybody else and people should worship the ground I walk.
Kabru: Thank you for teaching me that I always have several romantic options open at all times.
Thistle: Thank you for teaching me the dangers of becoming too codependent on one person, and that everybody should get the space to care for themselves, not only others. I have learned that those who offer you the things you desire, with seemingly no consequences, are most likely the ones who are going to hurt you the most. Your story is tragic, and I think it should be used as an example of child trauma and how to and to not love healthily.
Falin: Thank you for inventing monster fuckers and lesbianism

"A Tale as Old as Time..."
[ID in Alt]
This piece took me forever, but finally the Beauty and the Beast inspired Faricille stained glass is complete! And it only took like 21 hours lol. RIP my hands- remember to stretch, kids!
I feel like the symbolism is kind of obvious (for the most part at least), but I will go ahead and explain it.
MANGA SPOILERS AHEAD
Falin and Marcille are depicted in the unfortunate fate the dungeon led them to- Falin as a chimera and Marcille as an unwilling dungeon lord. Their expressions morose yet they interlock their fingers like in the bath scene. The design between them is the summoning circle Marcille stood in while resurrecting Falin. I did my best to copy the runes as closely as I could.
The golden feathers of the wing lion embrace the scene, and his symbol is also displayed at the bottom. Specifically, it is made to look like Kensuke's guard, a subtle nod to Laios, who is such an important person for both of these women. Thistle frames it with his ties to the lion, the dungeon, and his role, intentionally (with Falin's) or unintentionally (with Marcille's) unfortunate fates.
In the background, two scenes are specific to each character, and two have shared meanings for the characters. On the right, Falin's staff is lit up with magic, like the kind that teleported her party out and martyred herself. On the left is Marcille's mindscape library- the scene split in half between the black and gray of a nightmare and the color of a dream. Both symbolize driving forces in their lives- Falin's to protect those she loves no matter what, and Marcille's to escape her fears (and her own way of trying to protect those she cares about). At the bottom is the beginning- the raspberries they shared as girls that signified the start of their friendship. At the top, it wasn't the final ending but an ending nonetheless. The rabbits are tied to Falin because the rabbit stew is the catalyst to have her die for another time, a meal when one is starving, feeling like salvation despite death (Can't death be considered salvation on its own?). The rabbits also signal an extremely traumatic event for Marcille as she watched all her friends die because of them- once again, either actively in the case of her party or as the result of in the case of Falin.

hi! i apologize if this question is stupid, but why does falin has feathers in her chimera form? she was fused with a dragon, and as far as i can tell, none of the dragon types have feathers. thank you!
Hello! It's not an stupid question at all (no stupid questions here) it's easier to understand why she might have feathers when you remember that reptiles are VERY closely related to birds! Dinosaurs especially! Not that dragons are dinosaurs but they're as close as it gets and Kui seems to agree, in the Korean Q&A someone asked her this same question and her answer was "Dinosaurs had feathers" ofc that Q&A is all word of mouth so anything from it should be taken with a grain of salt but I think it's an answer that makes sense.
Here's a more in depth post about the subject from before that Q&A
So bullet points of explanations why Falin has feathers without being fused to another monster:
Birds and reptiles (especially dinosaurs) are very closely related
Falin's human half is an endotherm meaning she spents energy to generate her own heat so the transformation gave her feathers help her keep warm (As theorized by Laios)
Chimera Falin is a whole new creature made by Thistle, lots of the red dragon changed to fuse with Falin like creating wings and becoming much smaller, Thistle even words it as giving the red dragon a "new form" so changes that weren't originally in the red dragon aren't that absurd (especially since they make a little bit of biological sense)

White dragon seems to have either fur or feathers I cant tell, the AB describes it as fur but in the wings they are like furry textured feathers
This actually made me google that and turns out some birds do have fur like feathers! And one of them is the kiwi, very cute
The only other monster with wings similar to Faligon (feathered and with claws) is the cockatrice which is classified as a serpent separated from the other bird monsters, along with the Basilisk, so two more reptiles with feathers in dungeon meshi
So yeah, I could go on cause I love talking about animals/monsters/dunmeshi but TLDR Thistle probably had enough with the Red Dragon + Falin to create Faligon as she is, there was no need for another monster or anything else
#Sorry this got longer than I intended#I have just seen one too many posts claiming she was fused with an harpy when there's no indication of that so I end up rambling LOL#Dungeon Meshi spoilers#chimera falin#faligon#red dragon#monsters#dunmeshi thoughts#speculation#dungeon meshi#speculative biology#spec bio

can't stop thinking about dungeon meshi btw. how it comes down to being able to appreciate the hard and painful times because of the moments of happiness you experienced along the way.
it's about falin being able to forgive and look beyond the harsh way things were done- be it their father announcing he will send her away from the village or laios leaving her behind- partly due to her personality, and how she used to prioritize her loved ones' needs and emotions over her own, but also because of the positive impact that road eventually had on her. she knows her family was trying to protect her but what truly made it impossible to regret the path she had to take were the precious memories she made later on- it was learning magic and seeing new places and becoming friends with marcille and of course she couldn't hate it all, she was happy. it's about laios feeling so utterly miserable because on his end, it seemed like nothing good or enjoyable happened to him after leaving home, aside from the letters written by falin. but how long can a child be satisfied with another's happiness which he never got to experience himself?
so it really is beautiful that the series started off with him realizing that this journey allowed him to finally feel that happiness he was yearning for-
-and ended with everyone else realizing it too. when you first read chapter 11 it's just a funny gag about people not understanding laios, but it genuinely was too early for them to share his sentiment. they needed to come to terms with it on their own, with chilchuck opening up to them and senshi resolving the hovering mystery of his past and izutsumi freeing herself and joining their party and marcille facing her greatest fear. the winged lion was taking advantage of the loneliness and anger and pain lingering in laios's heart, but even it couldn't deny this. how, despite everything, he couldn't be satiated and his own happiness couldn't be complete without his friends' happiness too. how it was always about everyone enjoying a meal together.
and then there's marcille, who refused to admit it until the very end. it's in the way she had such a hard time fully accepting eating monsters despite how tasty she found them, not just due to how weird they were but also because she tried rejecting and burying her own pleasure and joy during this entire journey. from the very beginning, she was only willing to endure the pain and suffering.
as if she couldn't accept feeling an ounce of comfort, satisfaction, let alone happiness while falin was suffering on her own. and it might've been laios's reaction as well if all of this had happend a decade ago- i mean, that's exactly what he did back then. blaming himself for leaving her behind, being tormented by her loneliness and absence while falin was actually slowly moving towards a brighter future. it was him that was stuck, not her. but he kept focusing on her pain to ignore how deep the hole in his own heart had become, consumed by guilt to ignore his own agony, or to make sense of it- because maybe he did deserve it after all he had done.
and for that reason marcille was so terrified of admitting there was warmth in what she considered the depths of hell. because it would mean accepting falin going ahead of her and leaving her behind, accepting the inevitable she was trying so hard to deny and the end of her dream.
but it was learning there's joy even in her worst nightmare that allowed her to finally embrace those moments of pleasure that made her life worth living, however short they were. she realized that her pursuit would take away the things that truly mattered to her, that if she had succumbed to her fear of loss she would've been the one hurting her loved ones, just as happened to thistle. laios asking her to use ancient magic for falin's resurrection and then encouraging her to not give up on her desires during the nightmare chapter was a direct parallel to delgal being the one to push thistle down the road of destruction, while both marcille and thistle were trying to protect the people most important to their friends.
but in marcille's case, laios was able to understand her at the end, pulling her back just before she descended to complete ruin. it's truly fascinating how the story is not only about laios being understood but also getting to understand others properly, deeply- it's about mutual understanding, the balance between two people he never managed to maintain before. and i think it's only after seeing thistle's tragedy that he was able to fully realize what might become of marcille down the line. so while delgal put the weight of the world on thistle's shoulders, laios was the one to tell marcille she doesn't have to do that. because even if falin's resurrection hadn't succeeded, they both already know- there's happiness even in the dungeon's pit. and it's by preparing a hearty meal made of her loved one's remains that marcille was able to truly accept it- thus allowing herself to enjoy it to the fullest, embracing the cycle of life, no matter how weird or painful or grotesque it is.
#and chil was weirded out by how marcille of all people was truly delighted while eating falin š#the character development through mealssss#dungeon meshi#marcille donato#laios touden#falin touden

might be a bit odd or a stretch and written poorly by me (sorry if its rambly basically) but mithrun has such interesting but devastating symbolism and importance for a message in dunmeshi.
(TW SA/ABUSE MENTIONS)
the goat (demon) being an abusive relationship that to you who is in it only sees a nice perfect person doing anything for you, only for things to slowly get worse and worse⦠leading to SA (itās not actual SA but the imagery has subtle implications of it) and other forms of physical and psychological abuse.

this leaving mithrun in an intense state of depression, ptsd and other issues like getting mana sickness really easily, which is also connected to the physical disabilities he got from said abuse. and due to these states he finds he can not desire anything anymore, he can only feel empty, not even a desire to get help and only feels a strong anger to the person and tries to prevent anyone else from going through the same.

but heās not a lost cause.
āso.. even vegetable scraps have their uses, huh?ā
he blames himself for his trauma, he sees himself as worthless and not one to be desired anymore because of what he went through. and realizing this, realizing that he actually has grown a desire to BE desired even just in a simple way to be needed (helping with falin) he finally can crack through that depression. the ptsd is still there, the physical disabilities are still there, but through surrounding himself with community of people with different views and trauma has helped him realize he is not broken and shouldnāt be blaming himself for something that was out of his control.

he wants to do new things, he wants to live now and itās so beautiful to see.

plus, as kabru says here how the desires being eaten is not what it seems like is such an interesting fact. sure the demon ate his desires he had in that moment, making him believe he could never desire again but in fact he could get new desires (change/grow/heal) plus, traveling with kabru, he did show desires whether they be small or not.
in this moment he showed full horror about this memory. now if he was loss of desire, then he shouldnāt even desire to feel fear about this right? shouldnāt he only feel anger due to the revenge? which once again, shows his whole healing journey.

heās such a great character with so much representation, and in turn is also a character that can show hope for someone like thistle who now is going through similar things and is practically hospitalized.
there is hope, you will heal, you are gonna be okay and your trauma is real but it does not shape you as a person, you are safe now.
dunmeshi is such a great depiction of that

I cant describe it, but something about Falin seems so lonely.
Of course theres so many people that love her like Laios and Marcille and Shuro and the rest of the gang and back when they used to go to the dungeons she'd be surrounded by them and Marcille constantly dotes on her and she and Laios are both Weird (affectionate) together. But then when you look at her backstory and how the village didn't like her and Laios leaves her at one point bc he thinks it'll be good for her and you see her eating her meals alone... and then when she wanted to eat with Marcille at the academy but Marcille was busy... sniffles.
And when shes a chimera shes especially lonely with only Thistle and she tries to take care of him affectionately and gives him berries they could share but he eats all of it and she's starving BECAUSE HE DOESN'T FUCKING FEED HER...
A lot of Dungeon Meshi is about saving Falin and Falin becomes a concept people look up to and admire. This kind sweet figure thats gives so much to them thats placed in a damsel role in a way and now they have to give their all to help her. In the series itself we don't see them interact with her in the present day bc ofc that's not the story, the story requires other interactions. A good chunk of her characterization is seen through flashbacks because she in the present isn't all there. But when you think about how Falin must be doing, she must be incredibly lonely :(. Thankfully once the series is over I'm sure she gets to eat with her friends as much as she wants and gets to enjoy their love :3 I really do love how loving Dungeon Meshi is. They all love each other sm... but yeah while reading I just felt so incredibly sad for her </3

A definite theme of dungeon meshi is that of selfishness and selflessness with pretty much every character defined by these two things in some way
most obviously there's the winged lion who's entire existence is defined by selfishness, he just consumes, consumes and consumes, ruining everybody, with labyrinth he is bound to and he himself encouraging and shaping the selfish and selfless desires of others. His greatest desire, to consume everybody is the ultimate act of selfishness in the series yet he frames it as and pretty genuinely views it as an act of great selflessness, which is part of another theme in the show of people imposing their selfless desires on to other people.
As can be seen with Marcille, from the beginning she is shown as the most outwardly selfless, she's the one always wanting to help other adventurers, aside from Laios the loudest advocate for rescuing Falin, resents Namari for abandoning Falin and is shocked to find out Chilchuck is doing this because he is being paid. She's the one who crosses all moral and ethical barriers to save Falin, to defeat the dungeon rabbits. And then we see how she has the greatest most all encompassing desire of them all, to equal everyone's lifespan to one thousand with a selfless motive behind it, that it will erase bigotry between races. The selflessness of it is something she is almost proud, she's insulted and very insistent that she doesn't want more selfish desire like having a child or becoming a full blooded elf. Yet this selfless desire comes from a selfish place of never wanting to experience loss and is a desire (with the winged lions help) becomes one she seeks to impose on others
Similarly to Thistle who is THE example of how selfless desires become twisted and selfish by the dungeon as he original wanted to protect the kingdom and makes sure they live forever, though even then this was a selfish desire imposed upon him by Delgal. Now after a thousand years of running the dungeon he is all selfishness that he views as selflessness.
Then there is the other notable former dungeon master, Mithrun. Once viewed as a pure and selfless man by those around him he harboured countless selfish desires that the demon exploited and consumed, leaving him with what he and others thought was just the desire for revenge. A selfish desire that manifested in a selfless form as he puts his life on the line to rid the world from demons. It's through this we see one of his most interesting traits, his sincere desire to reach out and help other dungeon masters, compared to all other interactions he is never this gentle or talkative with them, the other canaries quite clearly just want to kill them, but Mithrun, one of the very few people who can understand what they're going through talks to them. By the end of the series we also come to know that his selfish desire for revenge was in fact an entirely different selfish desire, to be consumed.
Not on to Izutsumi, she's a character defined by her selfishness, as a result of her upbringing she has to rely on and care for only herself but then she becomes a part of the touden party and is put in a caring environment for the first time, and in response grows to genuinely care for them as well, risking her life in ways she wouldn't have done before. Izutsumi acts as a pretty potent example of the crews selflessness with all of them (except Laios, who they defend her from his monster fixation) acting as parents to her. Marcille gives her the love and affection, both emotional and physical that she'd never received up until that point, and didn't even know she needed. Chilchuckvis the only one with actual experience as a parents and only parental figure who has treated Izutsumi well, he pretty quickly realises she is acting like a teenage girl and quickly adjusts to treating and caring for her as such. Sensei, who is pretty much all paternal instincts cares for her the only way he knows how and is the first person to adjust meals to her needs and desires. Izutsumi can be seen as a demonstration of environments shaping a person, her formative years being treated terribly made her selfish whilst this new caring environment allowed her to become selfless for the first time.
Building off the paternal instincts comment from earlier, that one of the two things that define senshi's selflessness. Sensei is both a deeply mature and deeply selfless character, as a result his selflessness comes in more casual and more adult forms. In respecting the autonomy of others and providing them with food. With these drawing from the two things mentioned earlier, his paternal instincts but also his experiences with starvation. His paternal instincts are best shown in the chapter after Falin is taken as we see inside his head, seeing he views Chilchuck and Marcille as very young and that it is his responsibility to feed them, and considered it a failing on his part if he doesn't. This paternal instinct also is what leads him to secretly resent Laios and Marcille as he believes Chilchuck to be a child and views them as exploiting him and putting him in harms way. His focus on feeding others is of course a result of his experience with starvation, he NEVER wants anyone to go through what he went through and is THE way we see him caring for people outside of the Touden party
Next up Chilchuck, a character who at first seems to be a deeply selfish ones, as he journeys with the group because he is paid to, not because he wants to. But then we do come to respect this, as dungeoneering is a job, a very dangerous one that, and like all jobs it deserves proper compnesation. Which is something he actively tries to facilitate in one of his greatest acts of selflessness, where after having experienced the selfishness of other races and their willingness to use half-foots as bait, he starts a union to ensure proper pay and workers rights for half-foots. Though rather interestingly our first exposure to it is through the deeply selfish Mikbell, who frames what Chilchuck is doing as an act of selfishness. We also soon understand that he deeply cares about his friends, more than even he wants to as he continues to travel with them even when the job is technically done. This does result in a moment of selfless/selfish desire as he seeks to trick the group into leaving falin behind because he genuinely cares about then, he thinks they're in over their head and wants to protect them, again selfless desire that is selfish, though he does come to respect their wishes.
Speaking of Falin. cause of her minimal time to be a character we're left what screen time she gets and that's a character defined by her selflessness, from her communication with ghosts, being framed as a mothrrly figure to Thistle and the acted that began the series, sacrificing her life to save the crew, and would define how they act going forward.
For Namari it caused her to leave and take up the better offers she'd received. A selfish act that Marcille in particular resents her for but is explained by both her backstory, she is trying to buy back the honour her father stole, which would hopefully repair the relationship between the Lord of the island and dwarves, a selfless act, and the establishment of dungeoneering as a dangerous job that deserves compensation, which is why Laios and Chilchuck who do view it as a job don't resent her while Marcille who doesn't view it as a job (a. she's very open about not viewing dungeoneering as a career b. ancient magic research is her goal, thus the particularities of dungeoneering never mattered to her) does resent her. We do see other moments of selflessness from wanting to know Kiki and Kaka's age so she can identify them if they need resurrecting and standing up for Laios. Namari's character is one meant to show selfishness, especially when your life is one the line, is not inherently immoral.
The other crew member who left as a result of Falin's death is Toshiro (Shuro), who immediately goes off to find a strong crew he is hopeful can make it through the dungeon as fast a possible to rescue Falin. In opposition to Namari he is someone who chooses selflessness over this own life, running himself ragged to save her, but it is this focus on her other his needs that causes him to fail, running yourself ragged will leave you unable to succeed, as demonstrated to him by Laios. Laios is a man he resents for various reasons but one of them being that he doesn't see Laios as sincere in his care, that he doesn't express his selflessness in a 'proper' way. That his happy go lucky attitude and focus on keeping himself health are proof that he doesn't care, when in actuality a) that's just who laios is b) Laios looking after himself is a form of selflessness because how can one help others if they can't even stand.
Laios sits in the middle of selfishness and selflessness, defined in equal parts by them. He is completely sincere and dedicated to his selflessness, willing to risk his life and go it alone to save Falin, he seeks non-violent solutions to deal with his human enemies, wanting to talk to Thistle and get him to respect the citizens of the golden kingdom's wishes and doing the same with Marcille alongside working to defeat the winged lion and putting himself on the line to do so, as well as becoming the king of the golden kingdom, which he clearly doesn't want. yet he also has a lot of selfish desires because of this and being an extremely autistic dude with basically no social skills he's viewed as worse than he is, both on his and other's fault. He loves monsters and his entire life is defined by his obsession with them, this obsession spawned from a resentment of humans how they treated his sister (he got over it, he was a teen). He seeks to examine Izutsumi, and while he means no disrespect or anything gross by it, she is a teenager and has some pretty serious trauma surrounding being treated as a circus animal. He disrespects Lycion's treatment to his suicidal body dysmorphia because it's a 'skin deep' appreciation of monsters. He views saving Falin as an opportunity to finally consume monsters, his selfish desires and his willingness to express then when it really isn't an oppurtune time to do so (dude, your sister's life is on the line) mean he is taken at his worst, viewed as literally villain by Kabru and the canaries. Laios as the protagonist of story with pretty clear themes of selflessness and selfishness shows one who is outwardly a very selfish person yet the moment you stop to look is a deeply deeply selfless person, even if he is bad communicating.
This brings us to his foil Kabru. Kabru pretty clearly defines himself by his selflessness, viewing himself as superior for it, believing he should be the one to conquer the dungeon and that Laios is unworthy based on his shallow understanding of him. This selflessness is further deconstructed as something very bad for him as similarly to Toshiro is clearly doesn't value himself like he should, not allowing himself to have selfish desires, with it being pretty clear this worldview is shaped by his childhood trauma, of seeing what the dungeon can do, his survivors guilt and believing he has a duty to prevent it. This brings him into interesting conflict with Mithrun and Laios. The former is someone is a person who literally cannot care for himself and must rely on others to do that for him. His lack of care for himself, unawareness of his own needs astounds Kabru, rather ironically considering Kabru's lack of focus on his own and his focus on Mithrun, who is noted to be looking better than usual thanks to Kabru's treatment by Lycion, indeed his focus on analysing and understanding other people in general can be seen as a form of his selflessness/care for others at his expense. The latter is a person who confounds Kabru, Laios is the first person who Kabru cannot understand, the first person he can't just casually befriend one so utterly antithetical to his own interests as Laios is fixated and loves the very thing Kabru is horrified by, monsters. This also shows arguably the biggest example of Kabru valuing others, his selflessness at his own expense when eats the monster food Laios offered him, looking like he might die as he does so. This horror and confusion causes him become fixated on Laios, he is a puzzle Kabru must solve, but also because of Kabru's views on monsters, selfishness and selflessness he views Laios as an active and terrifying threat that must be stopped. But underlying this is what Kabru refuses to acknowledge until he confronts Laios next time they meet, he wants to befriend Laios, something that horroifies himself, both cause this is Laios, but this is a selfish desire. Admitting to Laios is an admission to himself that he has a selfish desire and that maybe just maybe that isn't so bad and that doesn't make him a lesser person. This acknowledgment that desires are part of who you are is what allows him to reach Mithrun, Kabru developed a new desire, to befriend Laios and thus Mithrun can too. Kabru is very potent foil to Laios, a character defined by selfish desires and seen as dangerous because of them when in fact he is deeply deeply selfless, as he is character who looks down on selfish desire and values selflessness to his own expense, only to learn through Laios that selfish desires are not inherently bad, thus allowing Kabru to help others even more.
And last but not least is elves as a whole and in particular the canaries. Elves are this selflessness and selfishness theme on a societal scale as their racial paternalism means they view it is their duty to look after races whilst also not respecting them or their autonomy and this causing great harm, with the canaries and Milsiril being microcosims of this. The canaries are a force tasked with stopping dungeons a selfless act, though motives selfish as while some clearly do it to save lives, it's established that one of the reasons they do so is to get their hands on the ancient magic inside and their racial paternalism means they don't trust other races to know the secret of dungeons, which almost dooms everybody. We also see how many of the members of it are criminals, who quite frankly are selfish cunts, really racist to non elves and are more than willing to put shorter lived races in harms way to get what they want. Milsiril is this racial paternalism embodied, as she's dedicated her life to looking after children of other races, a selfless desire, but she clearly doesn't see them quite as equals with there also being the implication that this is the result of a selfish desire to deal with her own loneliness.
Desire is a key theme in dungeon meshi with selflessness and selfish being the accompaniment to it that really makes so much it so potent.

Thistle & Falin
Just my narrative of Thistle & Falin, collection of shippy thoughts and dynamic analysis. Creating some imagery and threads, etc. What if we both made devotion to our loved ones our purpose, what if we both hadnāt lived for ourselves in a long, long time. Who are we? Beyond who we love and our powers, what are we?

Background info: a short Falin analysis touching on Faligon and Thistle + an old thistlin post, compiling most of their moments. Here I delve into further thoughts but for base analysis of what they have in canon and in potential those are good starts. If you want I also have a full Falin analysis.
Disclaimer: Beyond the nebulous 1000 years I place Thistle as a young adult, and though I agree Falin mothers him to some degree I donāt think itās unsimilar to the way that Marcille is a mom friend that sometimes mothers Falin and Izutsumi especially. Their relationship has layers like every other one in Dunmeshi, reducing it to being incestuously motherly or age discoursy to justify it being problematic is so funny to me, hello did you miss the mind control. Ah yes I love the 1090 yo with godlike powers being groomed by his chicken slave. You can have your own interpretation but canon is ambiguous enough, and dare I say intentionally ambiguous, that I have no qualms with not infantilizing Thistle, same with Yaad at the end of canon. I do ship Thistle and Falin, and although itās in a nebulous qpr-or-other third secret thing situationship instead of conventionally romantic way, like, I puke on anything giving them a parental framing so donāt come shitting on my doorstep, kid-Thistle truthers be warned. Only nuance enjoyers allowed on this post. Itās valid if youāre uncomfortable with the ship!! Donāt make your issue othersā problem.
I thankfully finished my Falin analysis before posting this, but besides that I also have an analysis coming on the whole Thistle age thing which I think is interesting, beyond the well being poisoned there are things to explore there, idk in how long thatāll be done though. Thatās all for plans that are relevant to this, now letās get into it.

Part 1
So my favorite Falin things are Faligon + her sense of being like a pawn/misplaced, going on autopilot to follow the wishes of others, a feeling of identity being a burden and sort of fleeing from that, and her not really caring in the way/with the intensity that sheās "supposed" to (as per the points I go over in my Falin analysis). Meanwhile, Thistle has a lot of shit going on already but then thereās also how being a dungeon lord is highly wearing on his mind. As Faligon and as dungeon lord Thistle, the way theyāre both so out of touch with reality in different ways holy shit?? They have power imbalance between them and it very much comes from mind control lol, but itās also not something Thistle is fully aware of himself, because the powers are driving him unstable and heās not even aware thereās someone in front of him really. Heās so out of it that he canāt even recognize that the dragon has been fused with a human and sheās so out of it we canāt even tell how conscious of her actions she is.
And then the interesting thing is that theyāre kind of in it together⦠Mostly from Falinās standpoint. We see that he does rely on the dragon increasingly so, hanging out with it, being saved by it and embraced by her etc. When he lets them both fall after breaking the web they were hanging from, he automatically, fully and wordlessly trusts her to catch him, instead of relying on magic or anything, and she does. Falin devotes herself to him but heās devoted to The Cause which is just chasing ghosts at this point. But despite it all thereās a weird comfort here too⦠From the guy who in his last moment of lucidity reached out for someone, anyoneās hand, from the guy who hasnāt felt companionship in hundreds of years probably, hasnāt taken it slow and slept and eaten in who knows how long, from the girl who feels compelled to care after him like sheās always done with others⦠And the beast-ness allows her to have some freedom to figure herself out in a weird way, to simply enjoy being beside someone and doing anything her own whims tell her to.
Itās very destructive and weird and layered but likeā¦. I can see the sliver where it works out. Where her kindness reaches him and he has a moment of lucidity where he sees her and itās like, wait, who are you, youāre not the dragon?? Where finding someone else who feels just as messed up and devoted as them, like theyāre just trudging along life like itās a dream following their loved one, heals them a bit. Where caring for the other becomes a way to care for themselves too, a dark mirror of each other that shows you, oh, this is how bad it can get and I want to choose something else for myself actually. To grow to see the person standing in front of you, instead of only searching with your eyes in what way theyāll reflect on you. In helping each other, finding some companionship thatās weirdly vulnerable and self-healing. He gets her in touch with herself and her own needs again through the arc and conflict they have, and she gets him in touch with the world and his surroundings again. They have clashing ways to be selfless, very self-sacrificial from Falin meanwhike self-centered with Thistle (he āknows bestā, āeverything needs to be left to himā, etc etc, he needs the control, but he does it all for others, meanwhile Falin leaves that control to others and only grabs it for herself in exceptional cases like sacrificing herself to the dragon for Laios).
Like just let yourself be, damn!!! So then them being like, zombie mentally stunted babies kind of enhances that theme in a way too lol. The way they communicate together is very⦠Instinctive and basic, and Iād love to see how it could develop into a functional dynamic. Theyāre in ālearning to be your own personā kindergarten together to me. Thistle looking at her coloring wildly outside the lines and being like "youāre doing it wrong" and then you look at his and he colored everything a weird color. The precision is scary but then his crayon goes 1 mm out of the lines and he blows up into tears. Ok the metaphor has run its course
So yeah like the ship/brotp is very, them being isolated and against the world together and like⦠Slowly regaining their minds together. Getting their sense of identity grounded into them again. In my mind they have a 50k words adventure where they hang out and he slowly realizes thereās more to her than just dragon and she encourages him to dawdle around and eventually just play in water and shit and itās like, starting to see life again beyond the laser focus you limited yourself to⦠And sheās allowed to just chill out and do whatever she wants besides the whole searching for Delgal thing. You canāt tie down a dragon! They are a duo they are an unitā¼ļø Heād have been fucked without her and at this point in time he sort of made her and heās her world. Traumabonded kittens do not separate but itās onesided in different ways haha. Honestly itās sort of reflavored mickuro wait fuckā¦
If nothing else, theyāre a very interesting dynamic to ponder. The depths of it all⦠I want to use them as a social experiment. I want them to stop to smell at the flowers and learn to work together⦠Theyāre master and servant theyāre owner and pet theyāre mothering and mothered (in a guardian hound way, in a mom friend way) theyāre both incredibly (emotionally and physically) vulnerable in different waysā¦ā¦ Master and monster if you will. Mostly I see them as guardian & leader. Like I said I ship them but itās not really romantic atp I think but itās not quite qpr either itās truly a weird secret third thing⦠What if we were sort of coworkers but also ?!!!>??????! You should hate me but you fiercely protect me I should appreciate you but I only see you as a tool WHAT IS GOING ONNN IN THERE

He wants to be protected even if he canāt really admit it. Here the catalyst was emotional distress moreso than physical threat. Notice how he lays there under her wing for a bit as he (refuses to) processes what Mithrun told him about Delgal dying and betraying him. Sheās becoming his safety net, his comfort hound. Somehow, the both of them find theyāre soothed in each otherās presence.
It kills me. Them being so toxic at the start of it, then somehow ambiguously just hinting towards how things could have went on to be better, could have been headed somewhere nice and healing and healthier, she dies and he dies everyone fucking dies and they forget each other and it ends there they never speak of each other again. Canon wanted me dead specifically. Like remember too that I was there when the last chapters where being released, my ass really was like "Oh I wonder how Falin will react seeing Thistle after being revived!" 𤔠But yess at least that means thereās a lot of Unsaid, a lot of space for speculation, and I want to see what could have been. I want to see it so so bad. Itās so interesting
Post-canon is also so interesting, where theyāre sort of recovered but not fully not really, them actually getting to know each other⦠And she doesnāt remember him but he doesnāt remember her either, in a way theyāve never met even though they have, even though she was the first one on his side since so long, the first hint of companionship heās had, companionship that heās so unused to getting that he canāt even recognize it for what it is. He couldnāt even recognize a human standing in front of him!! He is so disconnected from others and the world!! He spoke to ghosts like they had no worries in the world and everyone was ok!! Heās out of touch, tone-deaf af!! Has always been tone-deaf!! Being tone-deaf when he was younger, a stick in the mud, caused him to be more isolated than he already was⦠Autism4autism, anywaysā

Itās them not knowing why or how to express it but being drawn together, a bond forged together by the fire of circumstances and coincidencesā or is it only that? No one can know for certain but thereās a grip they have on each other there somehow. Weird distant caring thing. I dont know who you are but I feel like I should know you
Itās like my headcanon that she doesnāt know why, but on her travels she feels something when she comes across wild thistle flowers⦠There are just faint remnants, whispers of feelings like ghosts.
They should be remnants in each otherās lives. A deja vu of a person in the way Falin hugs small dolls to her chest, or how Thistle reminisces of something when he sees bird feathers discarded on the ground. < This paragraph courtesy of @cabinetteās huge brain
He canonically writes poems btw⦠Poems would be such a good way for him to get in touch with himself again post-canon, find desires in again and get creative fulfillment. He should make poems about her. To explore and vent and express all the vague feelings and memories he has, both those of during canon and after canon. He doesnāt remember her but he remembers her, slivers of kind eyes and warm gentle hands and healing magic like a blanketā¦
Yaad, an unlicensed therapist but the best you're gonna get in fantasy land: Maybe you should try journaling.
And too the thing is their relationship with each other in a way is ONLY about themselves, even when Falin is being self-sacrifical itās less about him and more about how she generally is, that sort of instinct to latch onto someone and just follow along with whatever they do and ask, meanwhile to Thistle sheās only ever been a factor in his plans. Idk idk them getting to that point where they see and know each other, stumbling into that through canon or actively working towards it post-canon, thereās weird beauty in that Like. Thistle cares about her because heāll take anyone as long as they fit the job description well enough, heās desperate to find Delgal and will grasp at straws to find him. In a similar way that heāll reach for someone, anyoneās hand on the verge of death, she seeks to protect someone, anyone. Thatās how she centers herself, makes someone her compass and her world. Falin wants to protect someone and Thistle would use anyone, pushed to the states they were in they would latch onto anyone for comfort (caring for him, grabbing Marcilleās hand).
Mirrors truly truly. And Thistle likes to shatter those, and silence anyone who tries to talk to him about reality, so then the option left is to be by him quietly and subtly gradually, gently (her specialty) nudge him in the right direction ⦠Nooo but actually why did he shatter those mirrors. Very interesting to think about. Would seeing himself in others anger him?
I like to call him a ghost of who he was sometimes, a ghost of the past, heās so haunted, and I think thereās fun imagery there too. The care she offers Thistle somewhat reminds me of the one she offers ghosts. I wonder if part of it is that she sees herself in ghosts, that she wants to offer them freedom and peace of mind she canāt get for herself.
And of course meanwhile on her end, the thistlin arc is also about growing self-respect. I donāt want to see Thistle as a lost cause in saying that her efforts are wasted on him, but being so permissive and invested in him is obviously not healthy for her. She needs to learn when to put her foot down

Oooh, just realized that choosing to eat in this scene was a big character moment all things considered. By eating she faltered in her task, stood up for herself and her needs, was selfish for once (/positive go get your damn food girl). She chose to eat. Anyways
I bet heās the one who healed her wounds after the Shuro party fight. And on that noteā itās interesting he could change her form from Falin to Faligon without touching her isnāt it? Healing by everyone else like Marcille and Falin always required touch, physical contact between the healer and healee, which some like Chilchuck say is a negative, but⦠The dungeon lord not needing to touch to heal makes a nice metaphor for how isolating the powers are I think. Truly clinical instead of warm. Theme of community and freely offering affection in Dungeon Meshi etc etc. Like I said, Thistle is out of touch.
The way that he has the powers to change her form and heal and like soo much magic power but he canāt even realize when heās hurting himself and sheās the one who has to heal him. Heās so fully devoted to the cause even when he acts selfishly that he neglects himself too, and she has to remind him to take care of himself, to eat, etc. That she feeds him. Eating is an act of love to yourself and to life. The berries, the curry, the soup that Thistle refuses to eatā
Do you see the vision. Do you see all the narrative relevance and themes and parallels of their dynamic. To chase ghosts, to cling onto them so they stay with you no matter how warped and ugly they get, and to soothe souls, purifying them and helping them depart for the afterlife⦠Both magic prodigies whose lives revolve around protecting and caring after their loved ones more than anything else. A family member who looks elsewhere while they are their whole world. They can flee their emotional issues together š¤ Who are we? Beyond who we love and our power, what are we? I think about the way she cradled him in her arms just before they fell down into the dungeon all the time idk idk
^ End notes from the one fic I wrote about them so far: Slivers, on AO3. For a moment, they were both slivers of themselves, bound together.
Thistle feverishly holding onto ghosts of the past and his source of power, meanwhile Falin cradles the people she can protect in the now with the powers that reside in her⦠Him cradling his book, her cradling her masterā¦ā¦ā¦ Parallels
Interlude
And yess itās important to remember too, Thistle became a mage only after delgal asked⦠He had innate talent, but moreso than Falin itās through studies that he learned to actually harness his magic etc. Idk I think itās an interesting parallel that could have interesting stuff be done on it. People often characterize him as predominantly bratty but. Heās smart and composed heās mainly smart and composed⦠Heās unstable and everything during canon was happening all at once with the winged lion being freed and Laiosā party and the canaries and agh </3 He can have a meltdown as a treat heās smart and cool-headed if it wasnāt for the dungeon wearing on his mind ok⦠Obvi I love my chars with anger issues but saying heās overly childish is having tunnel vision I think
Ok so the elephant in the room⦠First of all how present is Falin in Falugon exactlyā¦ā¦ We have no clue. The end sequence does show her in purgatory with a dragon foot holding her down, which can easily be read as it suppressing her personality- with how itās shown though it feels like sheād be fully suppressed by that? And we know thatās not the case, since not only does she recognize Laios and calls out to him, she hesitates to hurt Kuro because of the dog association, sheās excessively kind towards Thistle, the latter which her Adventurerās Bible profile confirm to be "her kind nature remaining as the chimera". Maybe itās a dream-like state? Maybe the dragon is the driving force with the instincts, and itās only bits of Falin and her personality that show through? A state of mind very primal and not very think-y, even if Falin has enough brains to think of sharing the berries, gesturing and oh- of course, casting magic. No issues with controlling the human half of her body as well. To some degree, her and the dragon are working in tandem. My own preferred interpretation is the driven by instincts one, a state of mind like an actual dragonās, which in my Falin analysis I delve into the significance of it for other parts of Dunmeshi too. So yeah, dreamlike mindless autopilot⦠I think exploring her pov as Faligon would go super hard. Aware of her surroundings but sort of disconnected with it, and disconnected from herself too, entirely living in the present⦠And like with her talking to Laiosā the only time she speaks in her chimera form, a simple observation, "Laios, brother", sometimes her human thoughts peek through more sharply, short moments of lucidity⦠I think itād be interesting to see an arc where as the chimera, she learns to share the "brainspace" more with the dragon.
Itās also unclear if Thistle had a say in how much of āFalin the humanā is in control? He very well might have suppressed her somehow when he changed her form to be more dragonlike. That might also be due to just getting back the dragon meat thoughā and the dragon meat itself might be why/how the brainspace is shared. There is a lot less of Falinās body in the chimera than there is of the dragon, body mass wise. Dungeon Meshi is a lot about physicality so I wouldnāt be surprised with this reasoning. But thereās the whole mind control soul bond situation tooā¦
The mind bond is another thing thatās left mostly to interpretation when it comes to the details. She feels compelled to listen to the dungeon lordās orders as a monster created and owned by it, like the dragons Thistle summoned during the fight at his house, but again like we see with the dragons, if the monster has a "strong will" it can disobey to some level without being punished by the bind or anything. The eyes of the magician, the small wyverns, level-of-control wise canāt be accurate examples because theyāre sort of like familiars, Thistle can see through their eyes in real time no matter where they are but itās only this species as far as we know. So otherwise the mind bond is more subtle⦠Thereās also the question of how much the control is shared between the dungeon lord and the demon, which again Thistleās situation is exceptional because he managed to seal his demon in a book, presumably all the power goes through Thistle without the intermediate of the winged lion, though we do see he has some reach since he reaches Laios through his dreams. ANYWAYS all that to say. I do really ponder about how a dungeon lord's monsters get their orders, like... For the fight on the first floor, did Falin just feel Thistle's agony in her bones and came clawing and barging her way in desperately and angrily to protect him because of his distress, or did he more directly demand she come, consciously or not?! Idk, since Falin is actively protective of him unlike the dragons who reluctantly listen to him, her being very fast and intense about it doesnāt have to be forced⦠Itād be interesting if she can sense his feelings, wants or thoughts, bc I donāt think itās as conscious as like, telepathically communicating "hey you, do this"ā¦? Pondering, pondering. Mind bond <3 Soulbound <3
Theyāre both very trapped in the past⦠I wonder if as Faligon a lot of her mind goes back to memories of Laios and such, if sheās in a dreamlike state and not just sort of absent, where would her mind retreat... I donāt think so like I said I think sheās mostly driven by dragonlike mindlessness, but still⦠Thistle stuck in the search of Delgal, thinking back to everything theyāve shared and where it all went wrong obsessively, and Falin, sort of larping that sheās still beside Laios, not unlike how Thistle treats having the corpses of the royal family at his house like them being safe. Delusions. Idk I just want more character studies.

The metaphors in this truly⦠Itās not literal, like def not something that happens during canon at no point are they or could be ever atop a mountain of frames and paintings of the Golden Kingdomās royal family and fine art lmaoo, so then like the meaning behind it all⦠She offers him reprieve, an outsider from all the Golden Kingdom expectations and drama, just someone warm to lean on, someone whoāll stayā¦ā¦.. I love Faligon pushing him to rest and nap so much. Man has first nap in a thousand years. Feather duvet like a nice warm pillow. The peace she offers him manā¦ā¦. Live in the present bbygirl Unfortunately it doesn't help. Look at them eyebags⦠Man needs to sleep!!
Part 2

^ This panels drives me crazy Itās the possessivity. Itās the "my". Itās the "stealing".
What if you have fear of abandonment and think you have to prove your worth for people to stay by your side. What if belonging to someone makes you feel like you belong and you feel loved and soothed by it lowkey, feel like it makes things easy. What if I was bought as a slave and servant but I was adopted into a pretty loving family. What if ownership is what love looks like to me. What if thatās why I have no problem rationalizing keeping people against their will in a glorified kingdom-prison, because thatās just what someone with the power who Knows Better does, and⦠Did he always call her his dragon hello? Feelings

He is not letting it go damn He hates when people mess with what's his. Or Delgalās.
But imagine. The dragon is like, the last thing he has. The Golden Kingdom has moved on from him, everything is shit, but his dragon is the last thing he still has some realm of like. Ownership over. But that ownership is kinda just his sense of belonging. His role, his duty.Ā Ā So itās like "Donāt steal the last thing I have" especially if post-canon⦠Itās thinking from his time as a jester bought into a loving family that ownership is natural in love and care. Itās thinking thatās the way you get to belong beside someone, beside earning that through achievements and being useful and capable. Everything is being stolen away from him. Control and things and people and even the importance he has to the Golden Kingdom as he becomes part of the background & past history and the kingdom switches into new hands aka Laiosāā¦
My dragon, not the dragon. I do like to imagine especially after the berries heās starting to feel differently about her. He keeps being like "youāre acting odd, dragon". His dragon is special. Sheās not just another regular monster npc to easily replace, thereās human contact in there. His dragon just for him. <3
I do think Falin has some issues with like, asking to be with the people she loves, feeling safe in asking for that, that sheās worth that. She follows them and is quiet and just takes the crumbs of love that they offer, she doesnāt ask Marcille at the academy to spend lunches with her, doesnāt ask anything of her distant busy father and ill anxious mother⦠The person she did ask things of, Laios, who she always asked to go travel the world with him and whatnot, left her behind. Like how Delgal left Thistle. Theme of leaving </3 theme of family and abandonment issues </3 So she just follows and cares after them and makes herself useful and is grateful she gets to be beside them at all. So yeah what Iām saying is being owned/belonging to someone might feel yeah like, belonging. Being One Person's. Heās seen her at her worst and most bloody and raw, and still wants her? Very comforting And especially post-canon he doesnāt need her to be witty or useful or such, he just needs her love and thatās what she has lots to give.
Do you think Falin wants to be needed⦠Do you think sheās a little restless if she doesnāt feel like she is, like she thinks just like Laios people might leave you behind and you never see them again.Ā Itās also because of what she said, that she put others before herself, that she just followed/imprinted on her parents/Laios/Marcille. She avoided conflict, she wanted to be liked and live in peace. The only times she was selfish, she hurt people (left school for Laios, sacrificed herself for them, teleported them out despite possibly hurting people on the surface), so she chooses to be selfless instead. "One of the most selfish things i've ever done was barely even for the sake of myself" - Falin and Toshiro both hah Falin is often told she doesnāt care the right way or not enough, youāre cutting classes Falin, Iām upset you left me and you donāt even seem to think itās a big deal Falin, you shouldnāt have sacrificed yourself to save me (her not noticing her ostracization in her village wasnāt told to her but Iām including it also). And with Toshiro when considering her proposal, she was worried to accept because yeah itās have been convenient but she wouldnāt be reciprocating his feelings in the way he wants and expected her to with what he asked of her⦠And sheās worried it wouldnāt be right⦠Bc she doesnāt care about the proposal on the same level he doesā¦.. I just think thatās neat I think that Falin caring both too little and too much, with laser focus on Laios & Marcille neglecting even herself, is a big part of her. She focuses on others and their emotional needs so so much always, babygirl be selfish for a whileā¦
Thistleās interaction with Laios is interesting too, especiaoly when Kaios heals him. How he looks at his shoulder, surprised and confused⦠Guy who's used to not having his personal needs met because he's so busy doing everything for the people he cares about receives care??? Woah thatās crazy Something something being so unused to human contact and affection that you donāt know how to process it and donāt recognize it when it happens/stares you right in the face. Thistle the Toudens are gonna make you open up ur heart to humans again on godā¦
What if⦠He doesnāt want to admit sheās not the dragon. If he admits itās not the dragon that means giving up some control⦠This was not in his plan, he doesnāt know how well he can control a chimera rather than a dragon, itās weakness itās vulnerability itās feeling like heās losing his grip on everything again and thus losing his place and purpose. Hmmā¦
Finding yourself through someone else⦠Because defining yourself through others is what youāve always done⦠Yeah. Yeah.
I do love it tying into Falinās arc of finding herself. Like, she doesnāt remember her time as a chimera, she just remembers this guy she has conflicted but fond feelings of for some reason, so say if they travel post-canon, traveling with him would also be a way to figure out more how sheās feeling, and then thereās how when looking at him she gets the feeling that itās been a long time he hasnāt lived for himself either⦠And like for him traveling is about seeing the world a bit too. Seeing it not as something to control or always dangerous but something to explore, and just enjoy the little things instead of worrying about the court. And just. Aghhhh. He hasnāt had someone on his side for centuries. Sighs. Of course Yaad also becomes that largely but traveling post-canon with Falin⦠Would love to see that in fancontent
Them growing to SEE each other, with the film in front of their eyes slowly fading away. Both of them coming out of it more genuine than theyād been even before meeting, before becoming warped,Ā growing more comfortable in their skin and with the thought of connecting with others. Itās the mutual care <33 itās having been on each otherās side at both your ugliest <3 Unconventional caring...
Toshiro saying "you canāt tie down a dragon" is always so good⦠Someone should so do stuff with that. "But you can tame it" / "I tried to once" / "but she chose to stay with me anyways"⦠Musical theme of How to Train your Dragon starts playing in the distance
When/after they get together, I feel like their relationship isnāt something they like to label⦠If anything itās like. Partner. Or calling each other by name⦠Him calling her my dragon, except now itās warm and personal would be so. Aughh <3 But then that just also makes the first time he calls her by name so huge.
Conclusion
They and their relationship is weird and unusual but thatās just how they are, and how they need to accept themselves (again: as they are) and roll with it! And make a place in the world for them anyways!
Magic forced them to be vulnerable in front of each other but itās them who have to like⦠Be pushed out of their passivity and do something with that vulnerability.
BROTHERSSS THEYāRE BOTH ALL ABOUT BROTHERS. LEAVING. OUT OF TOUCH WITH REALITY. OUT OF TOUCH WITH THEMSELVES AND THEIR OWN IDENTITY. In a twisted way only the other would understand what itās like.
Thistlin is so crazy, in humanizing you it humanizes me, in recognizing you for what you are I get more back in touch with the world again.
Flighted birds have hollow bones. With freedom there are risks and drawbacks. Thistle was Falinās.

Itās not everyday you can have a ship where both characters are out of touch with reality and others and themselves and have this weird almost innate bond of her being compelled to protect him and care for him and him holding onto that unknowingly⦠Even if he didnāt need to, keeping her by himself and sitting on her while he plans and has a panic attackā¦.. And also he owns her and robbed her of her freedom & body & full mind but she still wuvs him. Weird intimacy with the guy who horrifically changed you into something else, and yet is not even aware he has done it.
Falin loves nature and Thistle is named after a flower⦠Her post-canon coming across wild thistles and feeling a rush of fondness and she doesnāt know why⦠Thistles have thorns, but they taste sweet. Just gotta peel them off and enjoys the sweet taste of it once itās open <3 Eat it like them honeysuckles
Slice of life 40k words thistlin sitcom I need you. Donāt make me write it myself. Sob

You are so so close sweetieā¦

Dungeon Meshi Episode 13 is a simple one in terms of animation, but its simplicity makes room for subtler framing choices to shine. The first and most obvious choice is this striking wide shot of the most pivotal moment of the episode where episode director and storyboard artist KÅdai Nakano uses the wide frame and this silhouette effect to show more of the scene, while maintaining a sense of mystery, framing Thistle and Falin hauntingly under the architectural shapes of the dragon's stripped ribs.
But the choices made in the latter Chilchuck-centric half of the episode are just as important.
Chilchuck said early on that he only considers the other members of his party to be business associates and nothing more, but whether that was true or not at the time, it certainly isn't anymore. He has his guard up and is hiding behind this fabricated version of himself that's just frustrated at his friends for being stupid.
But it turns out Leed is a great listener and very perceptive and that's all he needed to let go of this emotional defense mechanism and realize that the emotion he's feeling isn't anger, it's fear. Fear that his friends (who, despite his best efforts, he's grown emotionally attached to) will get hurt. He doesn't even seem to realize that he wasn't being honest until she points it out to him.
The anime adds several shots throughout this section of other characters watching and listening to Chilchuck as he paces around sorting through his thoughts and feelings. (FINALLY, pacing around representation!)
He's not even being honest with himself about what he's feeling, so it's an outside perspective on his words that leads to the honest conversation that gets through to Laios at the end.
Simply by showing Leed watch him talk, the audience is invited to view the scene from her perspective rather than Chilchuck's
Hell, even the wargs get their own shot where their soft yellow eyes seem to show a sense of understanding and compassion.
My man was in desperate need of a therapy session and wouldn't ya know it, he ended up getting it from an orc girl and her giant beautiful dog-bears.
I broke down the whole episode in this video here, so if you liked this mini-essay, there's more where it came from!
Thanks for reading.

Ok, I have some thoughts on the ending of dungeon meshi that I'd like to share, so major spoiler warnings ahead for the end of the manga.
Specifically, I have some thoughts on the Winged Lion's curse, and that I actually don't think it is a curse - at least not a literal, intentional, "I am cursing you" type curse. I don't think the Winged Lion came up with a customized ironic curse for Laios specifically, and cursed him as its final act before disappearing.
Consider the two components of the curse as it is generally discussed in the fandom. The first is that Laios always feels hungry/never feels full or totally satisfied, and the second is that monsters are afraid of him and avoid him. I'll start with the first part.
When we see the backstory of the Winged Lion/the Demon, we learn that it essentially gained consciousness by discovering desire/hunger and developing an appetite. This happened because it ate the desires of other creatures, first small ones like bugs, and eventually worked its way up to humans. Once this appetite exists, it only grows and requires more and more to feel sated but the satisfaction never lasts long. We see that the Winged Lion is disappointed after finally eating Thistle's desires (which are particularly complex and have been marinating for a thousand years) and then is hungry again pretty much immediately.
I think, when Laios ate the Demon's desires, he became the only other conscious being to have consumed desires and therefore developed the same appetite for them that the Demon had developed millennia ago. Laios even says while he is eating it that the craving for more could drive you to do just about anything. When Laios turns human again, the appetite remains, but he no longer has the physiology to be able to consume desires. (Remember that the ability to do so was something he specifically stipulated in his description of the perfect monster). Therefore he has an insatiable appetite for something that he physically can't consume, and this manifests as a constant feeling of hunger. It's not something the Winged Lion chose to do to him, it's just what happens when a conscious being eats desires - they always want more, forever.
This is so tragic and poetic to me because in doing this, Laios dooms himself to a lifetime of discomfort, but saves the rest of humanity and also saves the Winged Lion in a way. The world is a much safer place if a hunger like that is felt by a mortal human who can't act on it, than by an immortal eldritch god-being with immense power. And the Demon can go back to being a chill elemental force rather than a conscious being that's always insatiably hungry.
Moving on to the next part of the curse: Monsters being afraid of Laios and avoiding him. The first thing to note about this is that it's only very briefly mentioned in the epilogue, and Laios apparently thought that this is what the curse was, but we don't have much to go off of. From the information we do get, though, there's another explanation that makes sense to me. Consider all of the information about monster behavior that we learn from the very beginning of the story. The rules are straightforward, it's eat or be eaten, and monsters are just animals at the end of the day. They are trying to survive, and they will avoid a bigger, stronger monster. That's what keeps the ecosystem of the Dungeon in check. I think the monsters are just continuing to interpret Laios as the biggest, strongest monster, since that's what he was at one point and he still wears its skin. It isn't something the Winged Lion did to him on purpose as a final curse - it was a natural consequence of Laios's choice to become the strongest monster, that other monsters would avoid him.
Finally, you might be asking, if there is no intentional curse then what did the Winged Lion mean when he told Laios his greatest wish will never come true now? We know that Laios thinks this means Falin won't be revived, but obviously they do successfully save her, and the Winged Lion actually sort of helps her to be saved, by telling her which way to go after she consumes the dragon.
I think the Winged Lion thinks that Laios's greatest desire is to live as a monster, something that is only possible through the power that comes with being the Dungeon Lord. It's a straightforward logic: no more Demon means no more Dungeon Lords, which means Laios can't have his perfect monster body anymore. I really think it's as simple as that.
In conclusion: When the Winged Lion says "I curse you, now your greatest wish will never come true," I don't think this is like a magical witch's curse, he's just pissed off and is basically saying "Fuck you dude, getting rid of me means you can't live out your fantasy, why did you do that." The other two lasting negative things that Laios experiences are just natural consequences of the things he did.
I've been mulling this over for the past few weeks since finishing the manga and really wanted to share, so if you read all this, thank you and please let me know what you think!

rubber ducking my way through these revisions... i'm at the point where the thing is complete but not polished and the polishing phase never stops driving me nuts
#(sits my thistle charm down for a talk) pasensya na kuya i have to put you in a situation#falin thistle gothic fic is pretty much a done deal na but. the revisions... cries#there's a subplot i'm not sure i should add re: the winged lion but i feel that would be tangential#every thistle fic i write is like 'what the Fuck do i do with the demon'#in gothic au there's a scene where it speaks to falin from behind bed curtains but for the most part#thistle is the 'antagonist' in that one. shame bc the setting is ripe for demon nonsense it's just not the point ://#at best there could be a scene where falin gets a hold of the book but relinquishes it to her fucked up little friend#also got a yaad thistle au draft inspired by children's books where i'm not sure how strongly to push the abuser metaphor#before it creates tonal dissonance and detracts from the story... it feels important to include#and i don't want to shy away from that but it's a balancing act for sure. don't think the demon is actually going to show up in person tho#the only draft where the demon is the central focus is the laios thistle mythic fantasy one but that's on the backburner#didn't mean for this word vomit to be Demon Feature but alright#falin&thistle gothic horror: a little chatty. appears in maybe 2-3 scenes to be a manipulative creep#yaad&thistle quiet fantasy: ominous background presence. personification of the world. appears in visions/symbols but never speaks#laios&thistle mythic fantasy: the only reason i haven't written this yet is because the fucker is going to be talking So Goddamn Much in it#roomba writes
