#it's less of a problem with this particular fandom and more of a problem with fandom in general but I do find it worthy of note

I think the problem is reductionism. You're thinking of representatip on purely as queer rep, and that's legitimate but there are many other kinds of representation and many other groups lacking proper representation as well.
Many disabled, neurodivergent people, people with conditions like PTSD and depression as well as abuse survivors also identify with Bucky in a big way. Especially women in the last category.
Thing is, there's been a massive problem with disability representation particularly in the MCU as a a whole, and with the way mental health is treated. Disability is either treated as a joke or something to mock, and the same goes for certain conditions.
So... when Bucky fans see the only major disabled character left the movies at this point reduced to someone else's love interest or sidekick it does get annoying. We want him to be more than that. We want him to be more prominent, not less. We'd like him to be the next Dr Charles Xavier or Matt Murdock.
Making a disabled guy with PTSD and depression a major hero in his own right would be a positive and yes, empowering thing for many people especially when he's been sidelined for *years* However, a lot of people in fandom - let's just say being toxic about the whole thing. We're getting a lot of SamBuckys in particular saying that Bucky shouldn't have had his own team, that its "betraying" Sam to do anything without him. Some even hoping he dies in Doomsday. Its not pleasant and can even be very triggering for existing Bucky fans (and even some SamBuckys) to see stuff like that.
it probably would never happen but i want sambucky to be canon not only because it would makes sense and it would be nice for them to be happy together and representation or whatever but mostly because it would be the funniest shit in the world. and for so many reasons. people are already racist and shitty about sam, can you imagine if he kissed a man. and can you imagine that man being basically everyone's favorite character in the current mcu. can you imagine how fucking elated sebastian "i want to recreate every rom com with you" stan and anthony "your personality would make a grown man smile" "pow pow pow" mackie would be if they got to get gay married. remember how they met by him trying to shoot him through the roof of a car and then ripping the steering wheel through the windshield. meet-cute of the century.

3e: Prestigious Gender
3rd Edition D&D did, ostensibly, avoid much deliberately and exclusionary gendered language of the fantasy genre from its forebears, which is a little like saying that a rainstorm is less wet than a cyclone. And bear in mind, I am not throwing stones here: it sure is good to have reduced the amount of naked misogyny and ridiculous and unnecessary gendering that persisted across the landscape of an earlier version of the fandom, and I am glad that we then made better and better versions of the same.
There are some out there who right now are thinking this is a great point to complain about something 5e is doing, but:
I don’t know anything about 5e
I really, really don’t care about you fighting with strangers about what 5e is or is not
In prior editions of D&D, and indeed in many fantasy universes before, there were often clear and distinct gendered roles and capacities that characters had access to in the context of a fantasy adventure. You might get a description that only women could be this particular kind of scantily clad drow lady who’s going to whip you, or only men can be this particular kind of easily whipped paladin man.
The way 3e decided to handle gender in most of the books was through a method that’s quaint now but wasn’t actually that bad for the time, which is alternativing he and she in different contexts. One class would be described with he, the next she, the next he, the next she, and while this isn’t good per se, it being used in a pattern like this at least creates an evenness that can lack when you try and make judgment calls about it.
There are all sorts of other biases at work here, though those biases aren’t particularly worth harping on. Going back and beating up the authors of 3e books that range from retired to dead is meaningless stuff. I’m not interested in what they should have done; I’m much more interested in the more curious process of examining what they actually did. The use of gendered language like this is present in the work, but there’s another place where gendering language can show up that players might miss.
Prestige Classes were the spine of how players build characters in 3rd edition. It may have once been conceived of as a game where you’d take a fighter to 20 but it seemed after the prestige class system was widely understood it was a natural progression for everyone to take. Why take level 7 fighter when you could take a level of a class that was more specific to your vision and fantasy? A prestige class was like a class you could take, but it was gated behind some kind of prerequisites that you had to meet. In exchange for these requirements, your levels could be of something specific, with special abilities that set you apart from just, you know, fighter or paladin or whatever.
This system of requirements is also our first place where gender shows up. There were, in fact, a small number of prestige classes where gender was a fixed requirement. I’ve already complained about the women-only Beloved of Valarian, which is good, because it’s a bad class and it indicates some messed up thoughts about sex, agency, and women.
And before I go on, I should clarify that there is a demarcation in D&D prestige class design. If it was in a printed book, it probably was more thoroughly tested and edited and typically, both better to play and less likely to do something broken. That’s not to say that they were all fair – after all, the wizard was in the Player’s Handbook, – but there’s a tier system at work. Things in the Complete books were pretty solid and a reliable balance point to one another. Things in the Dungeon Master’s Guide were ā€˜safe’ and definitely worked, but also didn’t tend to push the game boundaries very hard. Setting books had their own problems, so things from the Forgotten Realms sourcebooks were probably stronger and a little more broken, and Eberron brought things that sat kind of between Forgotten Realms and Complete books. Then there’s Dragon magazine, which could be considered wholesale speculative options, and often either didn’t work, or were wildly unrepresentative of the rest of the game.
With that in mind, I’m trying to focus on things from the printed sourcebooks. That does catch us the 3.0 prestige class the Eunuch Warlock, which is both the only instance of a male-only prestige class in a printed book and also a class that explains that you need a lot of balls to take on the class’ prerequisites, but not for long.
There’s also the Swanmay, which is a woman-only prestige class, and that’s where we peter out without looking at Dragon magazine classes I never heard of and don’t care about and bonus, aren’t worth worrying about. It helps that Dragon Mgazine options tended to be bad in addition to being badly made.
Anyway, the place I wanted to wind up with is looking at a big list of data and looking for one specific thread of language: How often does the title of a prestige class gender it? And I mean explicitly gender it; the fact that cleric or bishop are terms we normally gender doesn’t make those gendered terms. You know a term is a gendered term in this context if it has a different gendered form or a neutral form that’s not being used. This creates a possible edge case, in the term of the word witch; I’m willing to accept that, certainly back in 3.5, there was a mindset of people thinking witch is a gendered term with the comparative term warlock, even if I disagree.
To that end, I got a big list and I started counting.
Then I slowly stopped counting as I realised the lopsided scope of the problem.
The word ā€˜lord’ is used in about 15 classes, ignoring its part in the compound word ā€˜warlord.’ ā€˜Master’ is somewhere in the district of a hundred uses. ā€˜Bowman’ even shows up once. And in all that, I found that ā€˜witch’ showed up four times, ā€˜queen’ showed up once, and my favourite of all of them, we got one explicitly femme-gendered exotic word: incantatrix.
None of this is surprising or weird. It’s pretty much to be expected. And it’s cool that we get to now, do a better job with this kind of thing.

I'm not exactly a fan of this game (to put it mildly lmao) but ngl I think it speaks of a miserable climate in the fandom at large when even the fans are evidently "afraid" to criticize the work they love, feel the need to be "allowed" to criticize it and/or feel the need to preface the posts analyzing the writing in a positive light with those big paragraph-long disclaimers. That last one in particular is especially sad. Like I'm sorry but it sounds more like you're begging the king not to send you to the gallows

Putting work into an AI program without permissionĀ is illegal. You do not have my permission. Do not do it.
I hummed to myself as I scanned my bookshelf, trying to decide which one to grab. Since moving into college at Whitmore, I'd mostly just brought my favorites, since I didn't have much book space to spare in my single dorm room. But bringingĀ allĀ of my favorites made it a little hard to decide what to read on any given day.
I'd just about made up my mind, actually reaching out to grab one when the door to my room went flying open, smashing into the opposite wall.
I whirled around, my fight or flight response kicking into overdrive as I tried to remember where the nearest stake was in my room. I'd been dragged into the supernatrual drama just by being tangental to a certain friend group in Mystic Falls, which meant I was on high alert for supernatural threats. This weekend in particular, everyone I knew was back in Mystic Falls for a visit and a party.
At least, they were supposed to be. As I whipped around towards the door, I came face to face with none other than Damon Salvatore.
My heart started a very annoying gymnastics routine. I'd had a crush on Damon for a long time, despite knowing all his supernatural secrets, but with Elena around he'd never bothered to give me the time of day. I'd made my peace with it, more or less, but suddenly finding him standing in the doorway of my room, his piercing blue eyes fixed absolutely on me, still sent my heart racing.
"Hey! What are youĀ doing?" I demanded, fixing Damon with the fiercest glare I could muster. Probably not very fierce at the moment, but I did my best.
"You should really keep this locked," Damon drawled instead of answering me. I scowled as he closed the door behind him, then took a few steps closer to me.
"We're in a crowded student dorm hall. It's normally not a problem."
"Well, it's a problem now."
Damon grinned at me, making a point of flashing his fangs. My scowl deepened.
"Do you not have to be invited in to student housing?" I asked, trying to deflect and distract Damon from paying any attention to my heartbeat. His grin only widened.
"Nope. I've used that to my advantage many times."
I tried to keep a grimace off my face at that. I knew enough about Damon and his history to realize he was refering to past hookups as much as anything else. Not my favorite subject to get into with him.
I cleared my throat, trying to push the thoughts out of my mind. I met Damon's gaze again and raised an eyebrow, going for casual and just hoping I could kind of pull it off.
"Why are you here?" I said. "Aren't you supposed to be hosting a party in Mystic Falls?"
"Aren't you supposed to be at that party with me?" Damon asked, voice low as he took another few steps towards me. I let out a little huff and looked away.
"Believe it or not, I'm not in the mood to go running back home every weekend that I'm at college. I have work to do and people I want to spend time with this weekend, both of which require me to stay here."
Damon stepped even closer to me, getting in my space and moving to try to see my expression. When I continued to look away from him, he took my chin in his hand and turned me to face him. I scowled, but didn't pull away.
"I don't believe you."
"What do you mean 'you don't believe me'?"
"I mean, when you explained your reasoning to me just now, your heartbeat told me you wereĀ lying." I frowned, but Damon just leaned in a little closer, his grip still tight on my chin. "So why aren't you in Mystic Falls?"
I huffed and rolled my eyes, finally pulling back and out of his grip. He let me go, but took a few steps to follow me across the room as I walked away.
"I'm just sick of all the supernatural drama," I said. "It's been nice to be here, building something separate from which vampire we're trying to kill this week, or which werewolf is trying to kill us. I'm happy here, and I don't want to blow all that up by going home and finding myself in the middle of the supernatural drama again."
Damon hummed. Nothing I'd said was a lie, technically, so he couldn't call me out like he had earlier. I kept my back to him so he couldn't read it in my face either.
"I guess that's the truth," Damon said, his voice way too casual. "But I know you well enough to know it's not theĀ wholeĀ truth."
I snorted, then whipped around to face Damon with a scowl.
"Why do you care? I gave you an explanation, and it's the truth, so it's all you're getting."
Damon shook his head as he stepped even closer to me.
"Not gonna work for me, sweetheart. I'm not leaving here without the whole truth."
"Why? Damon, seriously, why is this so important to you?"
"Because. Now are you going to tell me, or am I going to have to compel it out of you?"
He wiggled his eyebrows at me, but I just rolled my eyes.
"We both know I'm on vervain, so knock it off. Just go back to Mystic Falls. Flirt with Elena to mess with your brother, whatever! Just leave me alone!"
"I don't want to flirt with Elena," Damon said, taking another step towards me. His voice was low, and more serious than I usually heard it, as his eyes locked onto mine. "I want to flirt with you, no one else.Ā It's always been you."
Everything about Damon's tone and body language told me he was serious, but I knew what a good actor he could be when he wanted to. I scoffed and rolled my eyes, crossing my arms and squaring my shoulders to face Damon.
"OhĀ please. It's always been Elena, from day one with you! And the handful of times it hasn't been Elena? It's been just about anybody else in our group besides me. Caroline, that reporter Andie, the vampire Rose whoĀ kidnappedĀ Elena... hell, even Rebekah Mikaelson! But never once me, Day."
Damon's frown had deepend, and he actually looked a little wounded. He took another step closer, almost putting us chest to chest, and opened his mouth like he was going to speak, but I put up a hand to stop him before he could get a word out.
"It's fine, Damon. Seriously, it's not a crime for you to not reciprocate my feelings. And I'm not avoiding Mystic Falls all because of some one-sided crush. But, seriously. Bonnie, Caroline, and Elena were supposed to be in a triple together. Nobody even checked with me, if I might want to join them in a dorm, since we were all going to Whitmore. I know I got sucked into the group by accident and not really by friendship, but for fuck's sake, I've thrown myself headfirst into this world and trying to help you guys, and still, it's like I'm barely even present. So I decided to say screw it, and I've made a bunch of great friends here outside of all this vampire shit, and I'm happy with that. So just go back to your party andĀ leave me alone. I'd say pass the message on, but I doubt if anybody else'll notice."
Damon's frown had been steadily deepening the whole time I'd been speaking, and now he looked truly upset. I'd confessed a little more to him in the heat of the moment than I'd been planning to, but my words were still true. Maybe it was time for a full break from the rest of the Mystic Falls gang, and maybe this was how I got it done.
"Are you...Ā absolutely blind?" Damon demanded, reaching out to take my hands before I could stop him. "I'll admit, when I first met Elena, she looked so much like Katherine that I was a little hung up on her. But I got over her when I got over Katherine. All I've been doing since a few weeks after I met you is trying to flirt with you! You've always shut me down!"
"What? Damon, you're crazy-"
"I abandoned Ric at the bar to buy you a drink and play pool. I blew off Stefan to go to some stupid Mystic Falls festival with you. For god's sake, I even asked you on a date after your graduation!"
"No no no, that wasĀ playfulĀ flirting. And the date thing was to make Elena jealous!"
"The date thing wasĀ notĀ to make Elena jealous!"
I laughed, mostly out of panic, shaking my head and stepping back from Damon. He didn't let me get far. He followed me across the room until my back hit the wall, and then stepped into my space again. I looked up at him with wide eyes, and I knew he could hear just how fast my heart was beating.
"Damon, come on. You're...Ā you. If you'd had a thing for me for over a year, there's no way I wouldn't know about it!"
"That's what I kept telling myself," he muttered. The faintest possible smile made its way onto his face. "I'm actually a little relieved it turns out you're just oblivious."
I snorted, but my heart had picked up speed again, which honestly shouldn't have been possible. If Damon were lying... well, it didn't make sense for Damon to be lying. There was no reason for him to come all the way down here, especially while everyone else in our group was throwing a party at his house, all for a lie with no real motivation.
I searched Damon's face, this time without a scowl. He smirked back at me and let his gaze slowly, clearly wander down to my mouth. I laughed.
"You're serious, aren't you? You're telling the truth."
"Of course I'm telling the truth," he said. His voice was more sincere and serious than it had been since he'd walked into my room as the smirk on his face became more of a smile. Slowly, he let one hand wander down to rest on my waist. I bit my lip, considering for just a second, then surged forward and kissed him.
Damon wasted no time pushing me against the wall and kissing me back. I wrapped my arms around his neck, letting myself get lost in the moment.
"Are you sure you don't want to go back to Mystic Falls?" I breathed between kisses as Damon moved along my neck and jaw. "You're missing a party in your own house."
"I'm sure. I hid all my good booze before I left. And I hate to rub it in, but..." Damon pulled back just enough to look me in the eye and let a predatory grin spread across his face. "I'm pretty happy you ended up in a single dorm room right now."
I laughed, something I honestly never thought I'd be able to do about the way I'd ended up in this single dorm room. Leave it to Damon to find a way to make it happen, despite the odds.
It'd taken a lot more drama and heartache than it should've to get here. Still, as Damon wrapped his arms around me and pulled me tight to his chest, I got the distinct impression that it would be worth it.

The bad rap Taash and veilguard as a whole get remains equal parts confusing and frustrating to me. It's one thing to see culture war chuds seething over woke or whatever, but really I expected better from Tumblr of all places. Whether or not you enjoyed DA:tV, it is objectively an incredibly inclusive game that did a lot more for representation across the board than most titles, and trying to debate that fact or tear it down because it didn't do its representation exactly to the letter of how you wanted it is, straightforwardly, poisonous to the fight for diversity in gaming as a whole. Call me dramatic, but every time you act like a spoiled child and pitch a bitch fit over a nonbinary or trans character not being exactly what you wanted, you are actively hurting your own cause. You don't have to like Taash, but if you care about the community it's the least you can do to restrain yourself from posting freezing cold, Steven Universe discourse level takes about how they are actually "harmful" or would have "put you back in the closet".
Here's the tough truth about portraying nonbinary and trans perspectives in media: these identities are not a monolith. Nonbinary, as a whole, is not a secret third gender with its own set of trappings, it's a wide, wide label that means many different things to many different people. That you can look at an nb character written by a nb person and say "they did it wrong" with your whole chest speaks more to your own limited viewpoint and disconnection from the greater queer community than it does to the actual quality of the character.
The impossible challenge that creators face when their writing hits fandom spaces is that people want many different things from art. I've seen people adamant that the correct and most helpful way to do rep is to have a character turn directly to the camera and say "I am transgender" and then have that part of their identity explored for the next 300 pages. I have also seen people, just as adamant and righteous as the first, claim that representation is best and most correctly done when queerness is an incidental background detail in the same vein as hair color or favorite food. The truth is that neither of these perspectives, nor any in-between is inherently more or less correct than the other. Different people will want different things, because at the end of the day different people have different experiences with their queerness and would like to see that reflected in the things they love.
The only real way to be incorrect here is to malign and defame a story for daring to depict something outside of your particular experience - as I see many people do with Taash. I had to read with my own eyes a post about how their romance with Harding is predatory or some shit and that it reflects poorly on the nb community. Quick question: could you please go do your moral crusade about 50 Shades of Grey or some other piece of work so I don't have to see it? You help no one with this hyperbolic bullshit. The only thing you're doing is handing the worst people in this world further unsubstantiated ammo for casting genderqueer people as inherently sexually abusive. Think for a second about who and what you sound like for the love of God. Taash and Harding are both into what happens on screen, your weird moral panic is your own problem. Once again, you don't have to like it, but please do not try to frame something as ontologically evil and harmful to the community because it doesn't suit your tastes.
Taash is fine nonbinary rep. As a nonbinary person, especially one who is afab and spent most of my life feeling a bit out of place and uncomfortable with what the world expected of me, I think it's just right. They managed to represent me. Sorry that it didn't get to be your experience that got put in the game, but it's impossible to tell every single queer story at once. If you really give a shit about the community, celebrate the wins of your fellows, not just your own.
And the sad thing is, I see two big 'critiques' about Taash's questline - either that it's all about their gender identity, or that it doesn't explore their gender identity enough. Sometimes I see these takes in the same post and I can only imagine what sort of doublethink Koolaid the culture war nonsense has gotten you to drink. Taash's gender is front and center, and that's great! But it's a part of a larger story - a story about a difficult family relationship. Taash's story is about the ebb and flow of their relationship with their mother more than anything else, and to be honest? It's one of the best in the series.
Family drama has been a mainstay of Dragon Age - you have Hawke's personal tragedy in DA2, Dorian's alienation over his identity and beliefs in Inquisition, and hell, Morrigan throughout the series tends to be more tied up with family dynamics than anything else. Taash is the continuation of that tradition, and I love what they have. The binary choice at the end is pretty weak and downright misunderstands the experience of being mixed race, but the dynamic between Taash and Shathann is fantastic. It's pained and restrained in such a realistic way, two people struggling with the old and new who dearly care about each other but can never seem to see eye to eye, and end up falling back on their worst vices - anger for Taash, and discipline for Shathann.
Veilguard has a tendency to pull its punches and make everyone a bit too chipper and chill, that's a legitimate criticism given the series' history, but I was deeply struck by how unforgiving Shathann's death was. It was really, unrelentingly realistic - life happened, and Taash never got the chance to sort out their relationship with her. They didn't get to reconcile or ever see eye to eye. Despite spending most of their screen time together bitter and simmering, Taash is so devastated by their mother's death that you have to pull them out of certain death. It was cathartic and brutal for me, a nb person who has had a really really poor relationship with my mother in the past, it made me go plan a lunch with her because I was so grateful that things didn't end like that for us, that I did get the time to work through it.
And sure, you can accuse me of going easy on Taash because their story resonated with me - but isn't that what a story is supposed to do? Reflect the real and sincere, evoke emotion in the audience and crystalize experience and feeling on the stage? Isn't that proof of its value?
At the end of the day, representation has no single golden standard. The only real end goal is to be represented at all - not only by shining heroes and perfectly squeaky clean moralists, but also by characters who are just as human and fallible as the real life people they draw from. Taash succeeds there, and I think they deserve a lot more love and grace than many in the fandom want to show them. If you still want to slander Taash as harmful or bad, why don't you call me that too? Why not call every non binary person who fails to meet your rigid standards evil and degenerate while you're at it? See how much of a community you're left with, and who the ghouls cheering for you actually are.

i do find it very interesting how different the foxes and the trojans go about caring for and supporting each other. well, actually, i mostly find it interesting how differently people seem to feel about it, especially in regards to kevin's drinking problem.
the way kevin's clearly unhealthy relationship with alcohol doesn't get condemned or fixed in the original trilogy for example is something that many people in the fandom have been pretty upset and critical about for many years and jean's reaction to it seemed to have really moved people (though that in particular, imo, had at least as much to do with jean's very restricted and in itself unhealthy relationship to food and drinks as with him uniquely seeing and caring about kevin's substance abuse issues. like, yeah, he really, really cares about him, but i don't think he'd have been thaaat much less upset if kevin was coping by eating chips or something. but well, whatever).
but to me, that never really read as no one caring about kevin or thinking alcohol is the ideal way for him to regulate his emotions.
the whole premise of how wymack runs the foxes and how they treat each other is just very built around the idea that all these people have been through awful things and that the way they'll cope with that won't always be pretty. but as long as they cope at all, they'll be around for another day, and another, which'll buy them to actually get better.
which is how you get stuff like wymack, in good conscience, not only tolerating but at times even soliciting underage drinking. and looking past the harder drugs some of the team are doing. and it's how him and the team all accept that neil is definitely lying about pretty much everything but mostly just leave him be. and how they all agreed to let andrew get off his legally mandated medication during games even though that could have terrible consequences for all of them. and how matt's mom said "sure random eighteen year old calling me on the phone, do give my addict son speedballs, you seem to have a higher success rate at getting teenagers clean than me šŸ‘" because they all view life less as you're either doing good or you doing bad, and more as you're either surviving whatever it takes to do so, or you don't, so who cares if you aren't coping in healthy or acceptable ways, as long as you are coping. (and then once they're ready to work on getting better, they do have a support system in place to help them get there)
meanwhile the trojans are mostly pretty normal and well adjusted, so they have a pretty clear idea of what a healthy person who's doing well looks like, and that's what they generally want for other people, especially those they care about. so when they see someone who's not doing well and not dealing with it in healthy ways they are very direct about it, sort of a "your behaviour is not healthy, stop doing it" thing. your eating habits are really restrictive? try eating different food anyways, it's really good, i prommy. you hurt yourself when you're upset? here's how to physically stop this from hurting. you get incredibly startled when you're touched unexpectedly? well, just let me try hugging you again. you drink to deal with your feelings? please don't, it's not good for you.
and obviously that's a lot more normal and straight forward than what the foxes are doing, and it's done with love and support. and a lot of fans find it very moving and beautiful and sweet. but i also know that i'm not the only person who was really put off by this and still finds it kinda disconcerting. to me it feels, especially in contrast to the foxes, who would largely find this sooo overbearing and rude and uncomfortable, kinda like strongarming someone into doing well, with (at least in the context of these specific books) shockingly little regard for personal boundaries.
my point isn't that one's better than the other or anything, i think both approaches are going to work differently well for different people and within the books it makes perfect sense why the different teams would act this way, and it's also perfectly understandable why some people really resonate with one approach and find the other irritating or unkind. it's simply some thoughts that have been rattling around in my head. building up to: nothing really. oh well

Pros and Cons of Midnight Snacks
Pairing: Jason Todd x Civilian!Reader. No pronouns so can be read as any gender!
Summary: Meet-ugly with the Red Hood due to a gas station robbery gone wrong.
Word count: ~2k
(I'm branching out to other fandoms, apparently. Let me know if you want a sequel. Enjoy!)
You weren't born in Gotham, so it sometimes still surprises you that you had adjusted so well to its particular brand of crazy.
You're from somewhere a little more south of New Jersey, although most places in the U.S. are a little south of Jersey unless you're a lobster farmer from Maine or a tree hugger from Vermont.
Both of those descriptions sound critical, but they weren't meant to be. Right about now you're seriously considering taking up lobster farming.
No one sane ever moves to Gotham. Everyone knows the stories, and even if most of the country didn't believe all of them, most people aren't stupid enough to disregard them. And you certainly weren't stupid. But rent was dirt cheap for a city, and so was tuition for GU's vet school. So you thought to yourself, "How bad could it really be," bought pepper spray and a taser, and accepted the admissions offer.
You'd always liked iced coffee more than green bean casserole and peach cobbler, anyway.
Reading news articles hadn't been enough to prepare you for the utter insanity of Gotham City, unfortunately. But you adapted. You always did. Upgraded your taser, memorized the bus schedule, learned the less sketchy areas of town, did your best not to get caught outside after dark. Kept your head down, ignored the crime lords and genetic experiments gone wrong and lunatics and vigilantes scurrying along the rooftops, and you'd survived for almost two years without many incidents.
But you'd gone to the library because you were critically unable to work in your apartment, gotten distracted by panicking about how little you really knew about next week's test content, and stared at the pages of your textbook for almost an hour as you fought back tears. So now you were running late and it was dark as you walked home because the buses were down. Of course they were. That lunatic that thought he was a crocodile had smashed a bunch last week and they hadn't been replaced yet.
Goosebumps prickle on the back of your neck, but you tell yourself it's nothing. Keep your head down. Criminals target the people that look most obviously paranoid first.
You're just burnt out. Severely. But the end of your sophomore year of veterinary school was looming, which meant you would have a relaxing three-month vacation before the next one started.
And no, you weren't thinking about next year's summer 'vacation' of clinicals. Because if this year was bad after a year of summer vacation, what will it do to you to have no break at all?
That's a future you problem, thankfully.
You're still feeling sorry for yourself when you reach the gas station right next to your apartment building. You walk right by it, remember what's in your fridge or pantry—thanks, grocery store self, thinking you don't need any snacking foods—then backtrack.
Since starting vet school, you've tried to be healthier with your eating habits. Brains lacking in nutrients absorb information less efficiently, after all. But you're still a sucker for Cheez-Its and energy drinks.
You won't drink it tonight, obviously.
Right as you put the items on the counter for the bored-looking cashier to scan the barcodes, something cold presses to your temple.
The cashier freezes, eyes blown wide with panic.
"Easy there," someone says to your left. A man, voice oily in a way that sets your teeth on edge immediately. "Do what I say, or I blow their brains out, then yours."
A gun.
A gun is pressed to your head.
Because of course it is. A shitty way to end a shitty day. You should have kept walking right past the gas station.
Before you moved to Gotham, you might have screamed and panicked, but you know better now. You know to stay calm.
You clench your fists to stop them from shaking so noticeably, but otherwise don't move. You've seen hostage situations before, because this is Gotham, but you've never been the hostage.
The gun feels heavy. And so cold, like it's sapping all the heat from your skin.
"Okay, dude," the cashier said soothingly. "You want the money in the register?"
The robber scoffs. "Obviously."
"All right." The cashier's voice is even and soft, unthreatening. You wonder if training for situations like these are required for cashiers in Gotham. It certainly hadn't been for your old job, although that hadn't been in New Jersey, and it hadn't been at a twenty-four seven gas station, either. "I need to get a key to unlock it, okay? So I'm reaching below the counter."
"Just get the key," the robber demands. The gun shifts against your temple. You fantasize for a half-second about acting like an action hero, disarming him and taking him down all on your own. But you're not a vigilante and you've never been in a real-life fight before. You don't think you're fast enough to get out of the barrel's way before he pulls the trigger. If you managed to shove it away, what if he fired and hit the cashier instead?
Then comes the sound of another gun clicking.
Great, you think half-hysterically. Just what we need. Even more deadly weapons.
"Lower the gun," growls a modulated voice, and everyone freezes.
The Red Hood is standing behind the robber, also pointing a gun to his head like the meme of people lined up in a church with guns aimed at the person in front of them.
The robber lets his gun dip a little bit. Distracted enough that it's not pressed directly to your temple anymore.
Not to brag, but you recover the quickest. It's probably the adrenaline.
Thank God you keep your keychain in hand while out at night. Your fingers shake, but you have your pepper spray up in a second, and the robber's turning to look at your sudden movement when you squeeze down on the nozzle.
The spray hits him directly in the eyes, and his howl of pain is immediate. But you don't stop spraying, even when the cashier starts to splutter and your own eyes water.
The gun goes off, once in the robber's hands, and a second time when it hits the ground because he's dropped it in favor of clutching his burning face.
You stop the stream of pepper spray, because now the air is spicy when you breathe, but can't force yourself to lower your hand. The Red Hood quickly handcuffs the would-be robber, which is only difficult because he's clawing at his eyes in pain, and executes a tricky-looking martial arts move to get him on the ground.
Despite everything, you're impressed.
The Red Hood is bigger than maybe anyone you've ever seen before. He could have punched the robber in half like paper, probably, but you appreciate the finesse a little bit more.
"Hey." A gentle voice, and gentle hands, take the pepper spray out of your grip. "Quick thinking there," you're complimented. By the fucking Red Hood, one of Gotham's most infamous crime lords. The first time you read about him in the papers, he was chopping off people's heads, and every story since has been similarly alarming. But he's not supposed to be here; the Red Hood stays in Park Row, which locals call Crime Alley, apparently, and you've always steered very clear from that part of town.
"Can you look at me?"
You do. Maybe he won't chop off your head if you listen well enough.
"Are you okay?"
You blink. That... does not compute.
The Red Hood doesn't save people. And he doesn't leave Crime Alley. So what's he doing outside of Crime Alley, saving people?
The robber is still screaming, eyes screwed up in pain. He's handcuffed on the ground.
"You should probably let him wash out his eyes, at least," you tell the cashier. "Pepper spray is pretty painful." You'd sprayed yourself once out of curiosity, realized how much it burned, then sprinted to the shower to rinse it off. Which, pro tip: not a good move, especially with warm water. Water reactivates it by opening your pores, or something, and when you're in the shower it just spreads all over your body.
Your eyes are watering. The Red Hood sees that, because he tells you, "Let's get some air," and tugs you out of the gas station.
He's right. The cool night air does feel good. You blink away the stinging in your eyes and he repeats, "Are you okay?" His voice is robotic from the mask, but kind of pleasant at the same time. You'd never guess just from listening to him that he's a killer.
"Yes," you say automatically. "Thanks," you add. You're lightheaded for some reason; you sway on your feet.
"You sure?" he asks critically. "You look... pale." Judging by the pause, 'pale' wasn't the word he really wanted to say. The red helmet tilts. "You weren't shot, were you?"
"I don't think so," you shrug. Then you look down at yourself and realize that there's a large bloodstain on your hip. "Never mind. I think I was."
"Jesus!" he yelps at the sight. It's kind of funny, actually, this grown man built like a brick shithouse yelping at the sight of blood. "Why didn't you say anything?"
You shrug and peel your sticky shirt away from the wound to inspect it. "I thought I just bumped something." Sure enough, it's just a graze. You weren't sure which shot had hit you, but you'd honestly been injured worse. Plus, supervising surgeries at the animal clinic you'd worked at for years has desensitized you to the sight of blood. Maybe it's also altered your perception on what 'serious injuries' count as; the amount of times you've been bitten by startled dogs...
"You need to go to the hospital."
"It's just a scratch," you argue. "I can't go to the hospital. I need to feed my cat."
"Your cat can wait. You're bleeding a lot."
"I'm already late, and if I miss dinner, he'll start pissing all over my apartment."
The Red Hood sighs. "Where do you live?"
Your mouth opens to answer on instinct. You snap it shut just in time and glare. "Why?"
"So I can feed your cat for you while you go to the hospital."
It's nice of him to offer, but... "No."
"No?"
Maybe it's not the best idea to refuse Gotham's most prominent crime lord, but it would also be pretty stupid to tell a strange man where you live. Especially when he happens to be said crime lord.
"Look," you sigh. "I'm a vet student. I have surgical tools at home to treat myself with, and I promise, under the blood, the bullet barely hit me. I've been hurt worse by Chihuahuas that hate the vet."
"There's no way I can convince you to change your mind?"
"It's been a long day," you sigh. "I really, really just want to go home." And he's blocking the path. Your apartment building is directly behind him, just calling your name.
"At least let me walk you to your building." He holds his hands up at your suspicious look and assures you, "I won't ask for the apartment number."
"I'm literally right there." You point.
He turns, sees how close you are to being home, and says, "Seriously?"
"Seriously. What are you doing here, anyway? I thought you were some kind of villain."
"I'm reformed," he grumbles.
"Well, good for you."
You make sure you have your keys and your wallet, then step around him and make it all the way to your building's door before he calls, "Wait!" The Red Hood's jogging to catch up to you, holding the box of Cheez-Its and energy drink you'd almost died for. "You forgot these," he says.
"Thanks," you say, taking them. It would have been a shame to waste four dollars.
"You're welcome," he says. There's something odd about his voice, but you attribute it to the mask, scan to be let into the building, and make sure it's fully closed before heading to the elevator.
Your cat is unhappy about dinner being an hour late. He weaves between your feet, making his protests loudly and viscerally known. You wince. He's worse than the dogs that bark in this building sometimes.
Your poor neighbors.
You give him his wet food, then hop in the shower to clean off your hip. It bled a lot, but once the blood washes away, it's actually not as bad as you thought. You've stitched up animals before, but never yourself, and decide against trying tonight. If it heals a little unevenly, who cares? No one will see it, anyway.
You pad the wound with gauze, tape it over, and fall into bed. Staring at the ceiling, you're forced to admit to yourself that you may be looking up more in the future. Just to see if anyone in a red helmet is running on a rooftop nearby.
It was a long day. But, strangely, almost dying wasn't the worst part of it.
Actually... it may have been the best part.

the problem with mitsi (or as i like to call it. mitsogyny)
(context: this was written under a youtube video, which i'm sure most of us have at least seen pop up in our recommendeds, in response to many people taking criticism against the new episode. it has been edited a little to be more cohesive as a somewhat-essay)
ok, i wanted to write out a rant/essay/ramble/whatever sort of summarising the criticism against mitsi's plotline because a lot of the people here seem to be misunderstanding the fundamental issue that people have with it, including some of those people themselves.
first off, an analysis that i think tell both sides of the argument very well which i feel should be read before reading the essay: Mitsi: What Makes A Fridged Character (and why y'all are wrong about it) | an AvA essay by InksandPensblog. i will note: i don't care to discuss whether mitsi was fridged or not and that won't be of much importance in this post. the above link gives some insight into some of the fandom's criticism of mitsi and how she was "fridged", defining common tropes for examples. that's what's relevant to this post.
the main issue with mitsi, in my opinion, is less with the fact that mitsi's a girl and moreso the fact that she's one of the only female-coded character in the series, and that her character's main purpose was to further victim's own development. the other arguably female-coded character in the series is pink, who (like navy) only really exists to explain purple's motivations. i don't have much of an issue with that since they're not meant to be important or sympathised with at all. that's not their job in the story.
with mitsi, i've seen people point out that she has more character to her than just victim's love interest and supporter: she invents rocketcorp, she's smart, she's kind, innocent and helpful. narratively speaking, she shows other creations' relationships with their animators, parallels her innocence with victim's trauma, and introduces victim to the outernet (as most fans call the stick realm).
but most of this things imo are either stretches or invalid arguments. she's not really a 2/3-dimensional character in any way; her main character traits boil down to the fact that she likes to be in service of others with no nuance behind why she likes helping people. she hypes up victim for the villagers, she starts a company with him to share his talents with the world, and she helps him overcome his trauma from alan's torture. all of her main plot beats center around victim: and while technically the sticks are genderless and free to be interpreted however the viewer wants, alan and most of his team see all the main characters as male, and that subconciously affects how they're written. mitsi, the first major female-coded character, spends most of her storyline in service of victim, a character not written as female.
there's also the issue of her being victim's canonical love interest. i feel like this statement from alan is important to keep in mind (don't mind the sound effects and edits, this is the only isolated clip i can find at the moment). in particular:
"i just assume that [the ava/m characters] are just a bunch of bros]. i haven't thought of adding any female stick figures but i think it'd be good. i don't want to introduce any romance though, i don't want that to be a theme."
he seems to have changed his mind on that last part, which is fine, but the notable part for me is that he seems to associate female characters with romance from the getgo. before anyone misinterprets this, i'm not trying to call alan sexist or anything. but there's a common issue with women in stories being reduced to just a romantic partner for the male lead, and mitsi falls under this, with her entire character existing to serve victim. (not to mention people will make things about romance whether you like it or not. that's just basic fandom. search up grapeduo or chodark.) even her death is to put victim on the path of vengeance--- it doesn't need to happen to show the extent of tco and tdl's destruction, because that's already made pretty clear in ava s2 the flashback and the earlier scenes showing various characters escaping burning buildings. when you write a female-coded character whose only purpose is to serve a male character, you're contributing to sexist narratives.
a counter i see many people point out with the idea that she has no character is that she does have character traits, it's just that they're generic ones like "kind" and "innocent". the issue is that she has no flaws to counterpoint this; it's not that she didn't have enough screentime. in ava4 for example, we see tsc's flaws pretty clearly; they can be very mean when they want to, they're petty (albeit for a fair reason), they're a little impulsive. this is shown in 11 minutes (from the moment they come alive to the end of the video).
with mitsi meanwhile… she doesn't seem to have any flaws? she helps victim whenever she can. she's nice to all the villagers. her customers all like her and she's a great leader at rocket corp (to note, specifically as part of a pair with victim. they're a power couple, she's barely given credit for her work alone). she has 13 minutes of screentime, or 10 if you count from her waking up in the outernet. there's plenty of opportunities to show her having flaws; maybe she acts a little selfish during tdl and tco's attack, only wanting to help herself and agent smith, or maybe she overworks herself, or feels awkward at having too much attention (and that could also be why she redirects so much attention to victim, she's shy). you could argue that the episode needs to develop victim and agent smith too, but ava4 shows that's easy to do too: just a few seconds dedicated to showing rgyb fighting over who leaves first shows that they can be selfish and childish. it's very easy to insert a moment like that for mitsi.
it's a little disappointing when the first major female-coded character in ava is completely flawless, with no personality outside of being nice and helpful for others.
also, slightly unrelated, check out this quote from mitsi's plushie website: "her white featureless face seems to ooze mystery and feminine power all at the same time." her main character trait, as a woman, is being feminine. it's irritating as someone who's been raised a woman to see her reduced to just her gender. she feels more plastic than a person, like the concept of what a woman should be (perfect, kind, useful) and not an actual character/person.
i would expect more from the writing in the series seeing as it's not just an independent passion project anymore, and has multiple writers that all could've worked to flesh out mitsi, or at least get a sensitivity reader of sorts to point these issues out. it's extremely disappointing and i can understand why people were upset.
tldr: the problem isn't just that mitsi's a girl, or that she's nice or dating victim, it's that she's written in a misogynistic way.

On ethical haterism in fandom & how to be an ethical haterĀ
Being a hater (sharing negative opinions about tropes, ships, characters, and trends in fandom) is fun and often tempting. Being a skilled and ethical hater is even more fun, though difficult to achieve.Ā
(This is pretty HP focused. While all fandoms have an unethical hater problem, HP fandom has a particular dynamic where people are quick to feel guilty about fandom participation due to jkr being awful and then project that guilt onto others by trying to identify other people in fandom as being ā€˜bad’ so they can feel ā€˜good’ in comparison.)Ā
Number one question: Are you enjoying yourself? If you’re not, then stop. You cannot be an ethical fandom hater if you yourself are not having fun and are instead making yourself miserable by being a hater. None of these other factors are relevant if you’re not having fun. Take a break from fandom and go outside instead.Ā Ā
The next consideration is space - public vs private and the specifics of social media platforms.Ā
You’re almost always being an ethical hater if you’re bitching and laughing in your friend’s DMs. You’re never being an ethical hater if you’re on Tiktok or another algorithm based platform where people cannot avoid your content showing up on their pages. Discord servers and tumblr posts are where it gets complicated. Make a good faith effort to make sure anyone who wants to avoid your hater content is able to do so via appropriate tagging or sticking to approved channels within the discord server.Ā
Next: humor
If you’re being mean, you better be very funny. If you’re not funny, you probably can’t get away with being mean. Be less mean.Ā
The best of ethical haterism is creative and funny and active. It is about creating and enjoying yourself with friends more than it is about tearing others down – even if you are mocking people and ships and characters!Ā
A useful question to ask: could a reasonable person with a different opinion from you find what you’re doing funny? (This is different from: can the absolute worst, whiniest, most sensitive person in fandom find what you’re doing funny?)
Things that are never ethical haterism:Ā
Making accusations about individual people’s politics, values, and identities based on their preferences for ships and characters. General rule: if you (or the people you surround yourself with) are throwing out the words ā€˜nazi,’ ā€˜pedophile,’ ā€˜freak’ or ā€˜bigot,’ you’re not being an ethical hater.Ā
Things I have seen that are not ethical haterism and are simply asshole behavior: accusing anyone who doesn’t like femme Sirius of being homophobic or transphobic, accusing anyone who ships any Death Eater/order member ship of being a nazi, accusing Snape stans of being incels, accusing anyone who ships Snarry or any student/teacher ship of being a pedophile etc.
Note: Ethical haterism is separate from critiquing fandom trends and the influence of broader politics on how we engage with fandom. It is asshole behavior to make specific accusations of individual people based on their ships, headcanons, and art, but it is reasonable (and I’d say good!) to examine how white supremacy/patriarchy/capitalism show up in trends in fandom.Ā
Things that are asshole behavior and never ethical haterism: commenting rudely on fics, talking publicly about specific fics you hate, deliberately going into ship tags to start fights, making accusations, generally being unpleasant.Ā
The two fundamental questions of being an ethical hater:Ā
Is what you’re doing making fandom more fun, more creative, more engaging, more lively, more connected?Ā
Are you sensitive to the idea that some people might not enjoy seeing this content and want to make sure it’s possible for them to avoid it?Ā
That’s my theory. Thoughts?

Touch some fucking grass. Newsflash, 1890 Scotland had almost no black people and alot of people playing this game are white. Is it suddenly okay again for white people to make black people media? Cause a few years ago yall had a problem with that. Pick a fucking side and learn fandom etiquette. Not everybody is gonna cater to your opinions or likes.
Also the character models are way too mature to be 15 (See chest hair and wrinkles by the eyes. Even the voices are those of adults) if they had wanted to portray them as 15 year olds they should have used voice actors who are 15 year old. All the NPCs are literally 21 in appearance and in the way they act.
Am I reading this right? šŸ’€
Tumblr media
I'm so sorry you had to hear this from me, but regardless of how old you think a child looks, it doesn't make them spontaneously age to whatever number you decide is acceptable. A 15 year old remains a 15 year old regardless if they look 12 or 18. That's how puberty works.
You mean ?! Noo! Chest hair?! On growing teenagers going through puberty ?! Deeper voices ?! How could this ever happen !!!!!!!! Everyone knows teenagers are the Pinnacle of baby smooth, hairless skin and tiny baby hummingbird voices !!
Wrinkles around the eyes? I'm not sure what quality you have your game set to, but I haven't found any eye wrinkles on the children- and surprisingly less than I thought on even some of the adult characters. Do you mean folds where the eyes close? Bags under the eyes? If you're specifically referring to Amit, he has downturned eyes and eyebags, which are both Completely Fine and Normal. Crows feet, which ARE a sign of aging, are found nowhere on these kids.
Tumblr media
As for the racism;
I forgive you for not remembering this, as you seem to have a very fixed perspective, but
the 1800s was when Europe was in everybody's business.
This includes, but isn't limited to;
The Scramble For Africa, when everybody was colonizing and "trading" with the entire continent, with the UK primarily taking a chunk out of East Africa. (Began in 1885, "ended" around 1914).
The UK pursuing trade and territory in Southeast Asia, including India and several surrounding countries (1858 to 1947).
The UK controlling colonies and entire economies in Latin America and Asia. (Took over Dutch colonies in Latin America in 1815 until Guyana gained independence in 1966) (Presence in Asia lasted from as early as 1786 with Penang and lasted until 1965 with Singapore's independence.)
You may note that there's a surprising presence of characters that may fit these nationalities in the game itself.
Natty grew up in Matabeleland, which is now modern day Zimbabwe; and !!! Wow!!! was colonized by Britain in 1890.
Amit Thakkar's name is Indian or Hebrew in origin, with Thakkar being a very popular surname in the Indian state Gujarat. In 1818, Gujarat (surprise surprise šŸ¤—) was also occupied by British colonies, and many Gujuratis fled to the UK- now making up around half of the modern UK's Indian population.
Even if there weren't historical, real events correlating with the time of the game,
IT DOESN'T MATTER !!!!! IT'S FANTASY !!!!! WHY DO YOU THINK A DRAGON BELONGS IN SCOTLAND MORE THAN A BLACK PERSON !!!!!!
"Pick a side" it's not picking sides. Nobody is saying there should be fewer white people in Scotland. There's enough space for all of us, there's no need to create "sides" because you feel threatened by people wanting to see themselves in the media they like.
"Not everybody is going to cater to your opinions or likes" and the opinions in particular are ? anti-rascism ? anti-pedophilia ? "Opinions" are whether or not peanut butter is better crunchy or smooth, it doesn't apply to the matter of human rights and keeping children unsexualized.
šŸ’ž Please grow as a person 🌈🌈

Rm is obviously jealous of Jimin like Suga, Jk and Tae that have been obviously jealous of him, but I wonder why just him in particular they seem to like support him but also put him down, they had no problem when Jk or Tae were thought to be the most popular ones or when Suga had success
Ask 2: Also I think they should be more jealous of Jk shouldn't them? Like he got picked by the company and gets the best promo, is overall unfair, while jimin doesn't even get the same support and is always being sabotaged by the company and the Fandom, yet all the members except maybe Jin and J hope seem to be bitter of him and think he deserve way less than them.
I think it might be the conditioning they've been under. I'm not sure if it's jealousy in all the cases, but I feel like they're all used to the members having an assigned role and also a hierarchy. And we discuss here their dynamic, but we actually don't know what the dynamic was like with their superiors, their producers, choreographers, vocal teachers, etc. Because if you have these figures of authority disregarding a person or constantly praising them in front of everyone, I feel like that might influence a lot how the members see each other. For example, Jimin has mentioned how his songs were rejected for the Bts albums (which is crazy to me) or how the choreographer didn't like him, so I guess actions like that place him lower in the hierarchy within the group. The dissonance comes when they make contact with other people outside of this bubble, and maybe the perception is completely different like in Jimin's case and how he managed to get a lot of fans and media attention. So that may lead to members being confused or maybe even upset that the order they had is suddenly being threatened. I feel like with Jk, he's always been expected to be the best, constantly praised and even favored with classes and opportunities. Even if they feel jealous of him too, it's something that they can digest.
I also saw a Pjm who said that the members know that Jimin has achieved all his good results without being favored, and that may upset them more than someone else being pushed and getting good results as well, because in the latter the success could be attributed to the push/ investment, meanwhile in the first one everyone can tell it's not a direct consequence.

re: sympathetic ganondorf vs evil for evil’s sake ganondorf, i think this is misrepresenting and underselling what’s actually offputting to people
ā€œi’m evil because i’m evilā€ or ā€œi’m evil because demise is evilā€ and the associated lust for power simply for its own sake has always been lame and low effort. there’s a reason it’s ā€œshit tierā€ on the classic ā€œvillain motive tiersā€ thing
ā€œi’m evil but there’s enough nuance to make the player at least somewhat sympathetic to me even if i’m still ultimately a bad guyā€ is a good thing that people like? i’ve never personally interacted with a zelda player who thinks windwaker ganondorf ruined the character or anything - he’s generally regarded as the gold standard of villain writing both in and out of zelda. this is roughly ā€œhigh tierā€ on the tier chart
ā€œactually TWIST i’m not evil at all, it’s the good guys who were evil all along, i’ve done nothing wrong and i’m completely justified in my righteous quest against the status quo, you’re the real secret true villain for being complicit in preserving itā€ is technically regarded as ā€œelder god tierā€ on the motive tier chart but i would personally label it as ā€œoscar bait tierā€. these things *can* be compelling in conversation with the existing landscape, but often it comes across as a deliberate effort to subvert the audience’s expectations for the sake of being unpredictable (or worse, for the sake of proving you’re the smartest one in the room). in separate works where this conversation/critique is the entire point (eg. Watchmen or The Boys), that’s not necessarily a bad thing, and the audience sets their expectations accordingly. in an established, long-running franchise, however, this almost always reads as dripping with contempt for the audience, like walking into a room and going ā€œyou morons like this shit? let me, a person much smarter than you, explain what it’s Actually about, because you’re an idiot if you’ve been a fan of this series before nowā€
on top of that, in the context of a series like zelda, this type of story feels myopic and disrespectful to the future of the series. ā€œwelp i burned down the 20+ years of lore behind this character so i could do a deconstruction, good luck using them in any capacity in the future, sounds like a you problemā€
all this is to say, i think it’s a bit disingenuous/strawman-y to suggest that people put off by this want ganondorf to have 0 depth at all. there’s a lot of room for different kinds of depth, it’s just that the trend of the last decade has been for ā€œdepthā€ to mean ā€œcondescending deconstructionā€
Hey!
Thanks for taking the time to write this ask, I think it warrants an interesting conversation. To me, there's like, a lot of things about what you're saying, and tbh I do see where you're coming from --in part.
First thing first... No yeah unfortunately some people Are hostile to even WW Ganondorf. It's been a rising trend in the fandom since TotK was released --people being very against the concept of any additional complexity to the character, either not getting it or considering anything he says pure manipulation that doesn't even warrant a conversation, literally making fun of people who were intrigued by this and wanting more out of this particular thread. This position not only absolutely exists within the fandom --less so on tumblr, I'll agree there-- but it's not even hard to stumble upon as a pretty regular opinion that gets tossed around. I had some interesting asks thrown my way, let's say. The idea that Ganondorf is a remotely interesting character that deserves more thought than what he gets is very much Extremely not the norm, and the very fact that you, as a fan, likes him as a guy is perceived as weird and missing the point by a lot of people. Like a lot a lot of people.
So I'll just... I guess I haven't clarified my position in a while, so I will reclarify my position on our favorite evil dude: I do like him perfectly fine as a villain, I do not want him to be "redeemed" by the narrative, I think he works fantastically as an ongoing threat, I think they could make him even scarier and more offputting and that would be super fun and thrilling... and I also think he already is complex. Like, inherently. Everything Nintendo has been putting into him since his first appearance is complicated --even their attempts at flattening him back in TotK do not fully work because they can't scrub him of the extremely loaded ideas they injected into him from the get-go. Nobody forced Nintendo to do a Mega Orientalism when inventing him, nobody made them write the NPCs to have this super weird antagonistic relationship to the gerudos in OoT, nobody made them have all this lore of the one man born every hundred years, raised by twin witches --and then nobody made them press on that tension point in Wind Waker explicitely, and then, in a more subtle fashion, in TP too. Nobody forced their hand when it came to having the strange "round ear" situation, suggesting (confirmed even, in additional canon) gerudos are born unblessed. The fact of the matter is: everything to make the relationship between Hyrule and the gerudos complicated has been there since 1998. There's no need for a Switcharoo to prove that anyone is smarter than the audience: everything messy has always been baked within the worldbuilding itself. It's in the cartridges already!!
Perspective on it is what could change, though --because, except in Wind Waker, we never get even a hint of a sense that we should think, as an audience, that Hyrule's super weird relationship to the gerudos is maybe questionable. Worth thinking about at least. Which, given the optics, is wild to me that to bring this particular can of worms up is still very largely considered crazy talk within the fandom (that, or the Sheikah situation across the series, also insane in many ways). And yes, it would perhaps lead to themes that are a bit heavier than what Zelda has been overtly dealing with (though, again, Majora's Mask exists --and I do find a lot of unpacked ideas in the Wild Era, like the very unquestionned gerudo bridal pipeline, very uhhh unfortunate already if I'm being honest --even moreso because it is unquestioned). But Zelda, when well handled narratively, can do wonderful things with evocative subtext, open doors never fully crossed, a lynchian pressure on what should feel offputting. We don't even need a sad monologue about it. It doesn't even need to be handled explicitely. But I think the pressure point is just better when understood and incorporated in some form, instead of being denied so hard the world itself start to feel incomplete and unlived.
I do want to say... I get what you mean with the whole "oscar bait" thing. There has been, historically and in recent years, a tendency to be driven by an external, almost panicked sense of morality rather than by the internal drive of a story, its internal thematic logic. I also do think it can feel very corporate, very "Disney looking back at its own movies and scrubbing off everything Buzzfeed deemed problematic in 2014 while making everything glossy and lifeless and awful" and it's not that great!!! and tbh I can't say I would trust Nintendo to handle any appreciation for the fact that the story of an eternal golden kingdom cheering on beating the evil outsiders who want to corrupt everything good and pure and blonde about that perfect inherently good place, is like, extremely not neutral. It absolutely is a delicate thread to weave, and I agree that putting a definitive end to Hyrule is probably not the smartest IP move to do. But, Hyrule doesn't have to be condemned as Bad, it can be merely complicated. And ongoing, regardless. To keep on with the Disney parallel: The Lion King would feel weird if we started to peel off the internal politics of the hyenas, it's just not the right place for it, when everything about this story revolves around the Righteousness of the Divine Right to Rule. But if the Lion King was an ongoing series that had been looping on itself for a while... wouldn't it make sense to figure out how to achieve majesty by studying other angles too, eventually? Is it that strange to suggest the exercise is like, possible? That it can be handled with artistry and soul?
I feel like... Yes, to acknowledge Ganondorf's humanity --not even to coddle it, just to acknowledge it-- implies taking in everything that makes him who he is, and that might rattle some foundational ideas about why this ancestral fight is even happening in the first place. I also do not think it means that he must be Good now. He can still punch a child and cackle maniacally, he can still be unredeemable --he can still destroy himself and others out of the most unconstructive spite ever, and we can still see the purpose in defeating him while basking in the "yea....." left in his wake (Wind Waker did that!!! Wind Waker did that and then we had more Zelda games!! crazy how that happened). This is hardly undoable. It does take some narrative skill, and some commitment to taking a bit of a risk, but Ganondorf is genuinely unmanageable as a character if you insist on your refusal to acknowledge his foundations --and I think it's partially why TotK's story is such a mess. He sells a TON, but you can't have him breathe slightly too loud without risking the entire world falling apart. They did try in TotK, so very hard, and to me they still failed--as insane as he behaves, Hyrule still doesn't come out of this looking good or particularly justified, because the very central core of Ganondorf's character is to be subjugated, and then rebelling in a destructive and brutally selfish, uncompromising manner that ends up robbing him of humanity --and the discomfort of that premise will therefore always haunt the conversation. Nintendo dug themselves into that mess. I feel like a lot of the Ganondorf fans I know merely... point at that. At the mess. And I feel like the longer the games avoid this mess, the more coats of spinach green they slather ontop of his skin, and the more nonsensical characterization they pile up, and the more Ganondorf will become a parody of who he once was, and what made him compelling to begin with.
And to top it all off, as if he wasn't contentious and complicated enough to handle already, they leaned into the internet turning him into a sex symbol for some fucking reason??? Yeah I genuinely have no idea how Nintendo will manage this dude moving forward, because to me, he is, at best, an endless source of (very lucrative) headaches, and at worst a ticking time bomb. I'm not sure how long they can get away with that TotKification strategy, is what I mean.
(Also: I tried to not overdwell on all the incredibly complicated conversation re: race and orientalism, but it's borderline impossible to have this conversation without acknowledging that I have never seen a major pop culture villain receive more pushback against "woobification" than him, and I don't think it's a complete coincidence let's say :) )
#asks#ganondorf#totk critical#(a bit)#thanks for the ask!#yeah it's complicated#I do understand the fear of deconstructing things without purpose --it does happen#I feel like it's kind of both a thing that happens and a thing that ends up soaking in all the DEI moral panic being flung around too#when to me these two things are like... not that connected honestly#(I have very pointed experiences to inform this take --but like it's a super complicated convo honestly and hhh tired)#there's incredibly soulful deconstuction --and there's terrified corporate deconstruction --and there's whacky lol random deconstruction#and not to over-pry anon but you seem to mention a lot this idea of ā€œthe writers wanting to be smarter than the audienceā€#and like... I won't say that it doesn't happen but I feel like this spiteful self-satisfied intent behind creative decisions is kind of...#at the very least it's hard to prove#I'm not saying this sort of anticipatory behavior to the point of betraying artistic intent isn't a thing. it absolutely is.#but I feel like a lot of the worse expressions of this backlash recently was honestly mostly projection#people generally want to do good art or capitulate under circumstances too difficult to surmount#(source: aaaaaa. hfgfhfgfh. death by gamedev.)#or just kind of fumbled their shit too that happens! sometimes you don't do a good job at art :(#but I think that rejecting complexity --or like the possibility of committing to complicated delicate ideas because it could flop#is no more helpful to art than living in fear of being called out for doing a moral wrongness#at some point you gotta imagine you can nail the concept and execution of what matters to you --because you can#things can be good and rich and simple and also complicated and it's possible and we don't have to live in fear of messing it up#that's my personal take at least

DON'T PRESS [KEEP READING] IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE. MINORS DNI, IF YOU DO THEN IT'S YOUR OWN RESPONSIBILITY.
Tumblr media
A = Aftercare [What they’re like after sex]
Aftercare? What's that? Before meeting you he used to fuck and disappear. Only after you two became serious is when he found out about aftercare when you used to take care of him after sex. Over time it was him who did the aftercare for you. After all, he was the man in the relationship .
After sex he would clean you up, dress you in one of his comfortable hoodies and cuddle you to sleep. He secretly didn't want you to think that he is with you just for sex.
B = Body Part [Their favourite body part of theirs and also their partner’s]
Jake's favourite of his dick. No question asked.
He doesn't really have any particular favourite body part of you. But if he were to choose then it would be your titts. He likes to fondle with them like soft balls.
C = Cum [Anything to do with cum basically…]
Gun scoups up cum leaking down your clit before fucking it back in you. He would do that again and again till you are so full of his stuff that you can't even function.
D = Dirty Secret [Pretty self explanatory, a dirty secret of theirs]
Gun steals your panties. He always keeps one with himself. When you are not there he would wrap it around his cock pump it till the panty is all covered in his cum.
E = Experience [How experienced are they? Do they know what they’re doing?]
Gun has plenty of experience. He's had random hookups here and there. Even had frequented brothels (dragged by Goo).
F = Favourite Position [This goes without saying. Will probably include a visual]
He would have you lying flat on the bed, pillows stuffed under your lower back so that he hit every corner with his dick. He hits your weak spot with each thrust. His hips rutting against your thighs. His hands holding your waist so that you don't slip off.
G = Goofy [Are they more serious in the moment, or are they humorous, etc]
This monster of a man can be goofy but you would rather have him serious because when he is goofy, he is no less than Satan himself. His face scares the daylight out of you. Though you get used to it over time.
H = Hair [How well groomed are they, does the carpet match the drapes, etc.]
He is bushy down there. He doesn't like shaving as such. Though he does have it trimmed time to time.
I = Intimacy [How are they during the moment, romantic aspect…]
If you are a quick fuck then expect a lot of degradation. A lot. By the time you are done you would be questioning your dignity as to why you thought it would be a good idea to hook up with him.
If you two are serious then that man is simply whipped for you. He doesn't show it but he is. When you are being intimate he would praise you throughout the time. He still does have a degradation kink but he would still control himself to not hurt you.
J = Jack Off [Masturbation headcanon]
He prefers the real thing. Which is you. But in case he can't have you, he will have to use his imagination and think of his hand to be your mouth. Later when he does get his hands on you, you will have problems walking the next day.
K = Kink [One or more of their kinks]
Man has lots of kink. Some of them being degradation, voyeurism, little bit bondage, power play, primal sex. He likes to hit it raw.
L = Location [Favourite places to do the do]
He has no shame so he can get on with it anywhere. 89% of the lookism verse has seen him jerking off or being intimate at some point of their life.
M = Motivation [What turns them on, gets them going]
Turning him on is a job that no one can accomplish. Other than that cunning smile and sparkling eyes of yours. The way you make sure to swing your hips sideways a little extra when you know he's watching you make a huge dent appear on his trousers.
N = NO [Something they wouldn't do, turn offs]
There is nothing on this earth that this man won't do. Nothing can turn him off. Well, other than Goo’s mouth I guess.
O = Oral [Preference in giving or receiving, skill, etc]
He prefers receiving orals. Having you hide under the table, kneeling between his legs as you play with his dick. Licking, kissing with so much intensity has his toes curled inside those expensive boots of his.
P = Pace [Are they fast and rough? Slow and sensual? Etc.]
Gun is fast and rough. He fucks like he has limited time before he can't anymore. Most of the time your body will be covered in bruises, hickeys, bites and hand marks.
Once in a blue, he would make slow and sensual love to you. Not fuck but love. He would whisper sweet nothings in your ears as he penetrated into your needy pussy.
Q = Quickie [Their opinions on quickies rather than proper sex, etc.]
Gun doesn't like quickes. It just isn't his thing.
R = Risk [Are they game to experiment? Do they take risks? Etc.]
Risk is his other name. He is up for anything. Shibari, exhibition kink, blood play, knife play, wax play. Man is ready to try anything with you.
S = Stamina [How many rounds can they for? How long do they last? Etc.]
He can go for hours, days without break. You sometimes worry about his enemies. He is this terrifying in bed then how horrifying he is to his enemies.
T = Toy [Do they own toys? Do they use them? On a partner or themselves?]
He would use toys. He would have you cuff you to the bed, legs spread wide and he would sit between them, necked. He would then use the vibrator to get off in front of you while you are fighting for even the slightest touch.
U = Unfair [how much they like to tease]
He is half and half. He sometimes likes to tease you. So much that you at the end start crying how much you want him to rail you. When he is not teasing you that means he spent the whole day thinking about you and your pussy.
V = Volume [How loud they are, what sounds they make]
He is not too loud but he moans and he isn't ashamed of it. He wants you to know how good you make him feel. He would moan and grunt a lot along with praising you for taking him so well.
W = Wild Card [Get a random headcanon for the character of your choice]
Gun fantasizes about threesome or foursome. How you would look with all your whole stuffed at ones. When you are getting fucked from the front and the back at the same time. He wants to overstimulate you. But then the thought of another man touching you sends him in a possessive mode.
X = X-Ray [Let’s see what’s going on in those pants, picture or words]
Gun is long and thick (enough to stretch your pussy beyond her limit) and veiny. When he is deep in you, you could feel veins rubbing your walls. He would have his dick tattooed if he could.
Y = Yearning [How high is their sex drive?]
His sex drive is 'high'. He is not stopping till you beg him to stop. He will fill you up like a cum slut. By the end you would be trembling and begging him to stop.
Z = ZZZ [… How quickly they fall asleep afterwards]
He falls asleep pretty past. All day he works under Charles and deals with rowdy, mentally fucked up teenagers and then having sex with you, he wants a good sound sleep to gain his energy back.

šŸ¤” Admittedly I was a little disappointed by the reveal (but certainly not surprised the foreshadowing was heavy in this episode lol), but not actually against how Beth (and Will) seem to be playing with it thus far- which is to say that I do think it has a lot of potential, and I suspect there's more to what we're seeing).
;) Big ol' ramble below
Mostly the theory has turned me off until now (at least insofar as I've witnessed it transpire in the fandom at large) because it struck me as so painfully ironic to see Trudy, a 1950s housewife, struggle to exist under the system that she's in, fail to fit the mold assigned to her, and be denied her personhood very literally for it (this being ironic insofar as how it mimics how she would have been treated back then). This and because frankly I just think she's a lot less interesting if she's fully a robot LOL, but I'll hopefully get to that in a bit.
Not that the hints at her mechanical nature and the relevance of Tucker's background were lost on me; I can appreciate why those would contribute to a plausible, fun and I think still mostly harmless theory (now fact). However, minus one or two specific posts I've seen on the matter (namely a recent one suggesting that if Trudy is a robot Beth is probably taking inspiration from The Stepford Wives, :( sorry person who made that post I couldn't find it I wanted to credit yoouuu), I've seen the theory just about exclusively presented in a manner that, rather than explore the metaphorical and political significance of Trudy being partially or fully mechanical, at best disregards the parts of her narrative that are at their core about sexism (among other related things), and at worst negates them entirely (i.e. Trudy only thinking and acting how she does because she's a robot malfunctioning and not because the world itself is causing harm and she rightfully wants something more than the role she was forced into, Trudy not even having any real thoughts and feelings of her own, etc.). I just think it kind of sucks to shove all those important things about her aside and say "actually, there's no person suffering here, she's just a robot" and perhaps worse yet to imply that she does have thoughts and feelings but because they result in Weirdā„¢ behavior it must be a problem with her code and not at all relate to what women were subjugated to during this point in American history.
CONVERSELY I don't think Trudy being a robot (or at least partially one) at least from what Beth and Will have presented us thus far, inherently suffers from any of these issues? First and foremost because Trudy definitely appears to possess sentience, thoughts, and emotions of her own, matters which immediately complicate her degree of personhood and don't inherently box her behavior in as a bug in her programming rather than an issue with the world she's been put in, quite the opposite in fact! I think they have a very solid groundwork laid out here to make a strong statement with Trudy's narrative (and perhaps ask the question of what is really malfunctioning here), all the more so since [I pull out a Rebecca Swallows-style conspiracy board] I don't think she's entirely robotic in nature? Actually you should just read Mack's tags in this post cause he has great thoughts on the matter (of which those are just some of them), but if I can direct your attention to one thing in particular, it would be Beth's fact (I *believe* from episode 2) about Trudy never graduating high school because of her essay where she suggested that "perhaps women could one day domesticate themselves", a statement that could of course be interpreted a number of ways but ultimately threatened the patriarchal status quo enough (in suggesting women's independence) to cost Trudy her diploma. Taken on its own this fact appears to contradict the theory that Trudy has always been robotic in nature, because it doesn't really make sense that Trudy would have been set up to go through high school (or school at all really) when Tucker's intention was/is for her to be the perfect housewife. You may then suggest that Trudy's memories of this are fabricated and not actually her lived experiences, in which case firstly perhaps you should reread my earlier point on the robot theory being used to actively negate and otherwise disregard the portions of Trudy's narrative that pertain to sexism and feminism, and secondly it really doesn't make any sense to me that Tucker would implant those kind of memories into Trudy's brain? To be completely honest if she's been a robot from the very beginning (rather than someone who became a cyborg, which is what I'm trying to suggest here), then I don't see why Tucker would program her with actual sentience in the first place (suspending my disbelief here with regards to the possibility of programming sentience to begin with). It seems much more likely to me then that Trudy was not always a robot, and instead altered by Tucker to force her into a role of subordination and remedy her """imperfections""". This option is significantly more interesting to me one, because it implies that Trudy has actually lived a life up until the present, full of its own complexities and strife (and dreams, and real actual memories worth exploring, etc.), and hence is not by any means "just a robot", and second because it amplifies the hypothetical statement being made on the lives of the real living women of the era and how they were treated and seen as being "in need of fixing" for not conforming to gender roles or otherwise acting "out of line" with what was expected of them.
OKAY THIS GOT OUT OF HAND SO I'M CUTTING MYSELF OFF HERE but I wanted to my share my current thoughts what with this ending and where I'm at so hopefully that was at least interesting to whoever has chosen to read through this one okay thank you byyyyyyyyye~

I think Normal Bill is almost just as intelligent and knowledgeable as his canon counterpart, since he had more time to focus on science and such instead of chaos and despair and.. just about every problem in the book.
Can he also still see through trees and The All Seeing Eye on the dollar bill?
Does he have all the powers of Canon Bill?
How does he feel about Ford and Dipper?
What would he think if he saw his parents?
And.. how does he feel about all the.. imagery of him throughout the world? (Remember how Ford had a fucking golden statue of him? And with the cave paintings.. and the dollar bill, the pyramids have a vague eye shape on them (since canonically they were statues of Bill until the top hat and hands fell off) The Eye Of Providence being a sign for God.. yeah it’s REALLY suspicious, I don’t think he really trusts the Pines family at this point, because they are horrible at hiding things, you don’t need to be an all seeing god to know that.
(Sorry for the long rant, I just love this AU)
Don’t apologise for a rant 🫵 I love rants, my brain just can’t comprehend them sometimes šŸ’„
And also aww 🄹 glad you enjoy this AU ā¤ļø
Okay lemme try answering šŸ‘
First yes, absolutely, he’s a smart boi
His energy is just in the nerd stuff now, instead of chaotic insane vibes he has in the canon
Yea and I think he considers it normal lmao
ā€œWait what do you mean you don’t see through trees Mabel? Like.. I thought everyone did??ā€
He’s a smart boi, but he is oblivious in some instances
Not sure about all powers, but some for sure
Also this Bill walks everywhere, bc he never saw humans fly and didn’t consider trying (maybe he saw one human attempt it and decided to never try it himself šŸ’€)
I honestly not really sure
Again not my initial idea, but remember one person saying that Bill would have some intrusive thoughts about Pines time to time, not understanding where they come from and probably feeling really guilty about those
But ultimately I think he would consider them a semi family to him
If y’all want a more detailed answer
He’s probably the closest to Mabel, bc she’s a forgiving person and treats Bill as a new person
This version of Bill would be in a girls squad and hang out with them during sleepovers (he’s a gossip girl come on šŸ’…)
Dipper would still be cautious around Bill (as well as Ford), but would get used to him over time forming some sort of brotherly bond
Also Bill would ship Dipper and Pacifica, occasionally playing cupid for them during Dipper crushing on Wendy
He saw an opportunity to tease Dipper (and he said it would be a good enemies to lovers trope)ļæ¼
When people said ā€œStan would’ve taken that shotā€ yea, he would kill the child
But perhaps after seeing Mabel being buds with Bill, he just might be a little less defensive
It could both ways really: either Stan would be completely against Bill, but grow to tolerate his presence with occasional (semi)friendly bullying; or Stan would double down and just actively trying to kick Bill out
Either way they would have some sort of rivalry for sure
He would be buds with Soos and Wendy, just chilling with em on the occasion
And the last but not least Ford
He would be the most paranoid and cautious, not because he’s afraid of Bill like Dipper, but because Ford is afraid of ā€œtrigger the old Bill insideā€
He and Dipper had an agreement to hide all possible information that could potentially remind Bill about his old self (all the Pines agreed to it too to some extent)
Were they successful in it? Who’s to say
Bill obliviousness saved em a bunch of times
And to address the elephant in the room: no, Billford does not exist in this AU
*booing can be heard across the fandom space* NO, YOU’RE NOT GETTING OLD MAN YAOI ON THIS ONE
šŸ…šŸ’„šŸ»ā€ā„ļø *tiny bear screaming*
Anyway
I just don’t think it would be fitting in that particular scenario
Don’t get me wrong I like canon Billford (I love the memes and the fact that they are implied to be canon exes is hilarious), but canon Billford
This particular AU just makes the situation incredibly specific šŸ’„
I tried to imagine a scenario where Billford could happen (like i dunno, they gave baby Bill to Oracle and then met his ā€œnormalā€ version)
But with the direction in which this AU went, I think it’s best to leave Ford and Bill with a platonic/parental relationship
To be fair it would be incredibly weird to raise your ex in a baby form šŸ˜šŸ’„
But I never actually considered to continue this AU originally, so um šŸ’„šŸ’„
I think Ford would just eventually start treating Bill like Mabel: he’s a new person now and to keep that new person undamaged, you need to keep a lot of information hidden (for everyone’s and Bill’s own sake)
This version of Bill and Ford would get along, bc they would both be nerds
(btw Bill’s design is similar to Ford, bc this is how nerds look šŸ¤“šŸ’…/silly) (but you can adapt it in a way that Ford just had an influence on Bill, they have a family nerd lookā„¢ļø)
I’m still not sure what kind of time paradox shenanigans the went through to raise Bill tho šŸ’„
This
Honestly I think it would be hilarious if he just thought it was some different guy
ā€œA triangle… with one eye… what if.. naaaah I don’t have a top-hatā€
Anyway thank u for the ask ā¤ļø hope it was fun to read throughšŸ’„
