because even though james loves remus- and he absolutely does! he would kill and die for him! -he did NOT anticipate how jealous he would be of anyone else taking sirius’ attention. or how much disdain he would inherently carry, try as he might, for anyone who didn’t understand sirius on that same molecular level. and remus doesn’t- sirius and remus love each other, are attracted to each other, match in a hundred ways. but they aren’t made from the same cloth the way james and sirius are. he’s protective of sirius- he’s been through a lot, and the mere prospect of someone being in a position where they could hurt him more is maddening. it feels like losing control- and james needs to keep his people safe. it was different with all the girls- sirius was playing them. he was never gone the way he’s gone with remus. he was still james’.

remus has no clue that any of this is happening until james asks sirius who he would save in a fire in a tone just too desperate to be joking.

peter, on the other hand, knows everything, as Lily’s been tutoring him in potions and hearing James’ jealous rants for weeks.

“Honestly, I think we should all thank Dorcas for booking us this vacation,” Sirius sighed, staring up at the cloudless sky. “Tenerife is beautiful.”

Remus hummed in agreement. “And the weather is doing wonders for me, you know.”

“Well, that settles it. We must buy a house here this instant,” Sirius said, sitting up and pulling out his phone. “What’s our budget, dearest Moony?”

“We’re not buying a vacation house here, Sirius,” Remus sighed, still lying down on the beach towel. 

“Too late. I found a good one, Moonshine. Look!” Sirius shoved his phone in front of Remus. There was a picture of a beautiful villa with whitewashed walls and a large pool.

Remus looked at the price.

“Two million euros?” he gasped. “Sirius, we can’t-”

“Oh, but we can,” Sirius remarked smugly. “Dead rich bastard parents, remember?”

Remus raised an eyebrow. “Doesn’t Regulus have control of the assets? I thought you were disowned.”

“Nah, not disowned,” Sirius said, waving a hand nonchalantly. “My pyromaniacal hag of a mother just burnt one of my sets of documents. Grandfather Arcturus had another set and so did Grandfather Pollux.”

“So, you’re… the head of Black Industries?” Remus asked, sitting up. 

“Nah, that’s Reg. Gave that to him ‘cause I didn’t want to be associated with those bitches.”

“So, what you’re saying is that the current owner of Black Industries is over there making out with James Potter?” Remus pointed towards the shallows, where it was blatantly obvious that Regulus and James were sucking face.

“Well, if you really want to put it that way, then yes,” Sirius replied begrudgingly. “Anyways, do we want this villa or not?”

“I mean, you have the money,” Remus shrugged. “Why not?”

“Watch out, Moonykins, you’ll become my trophy husband yet,” Sirius grinned.

Remus sighed, lying back down and staring back up at the sky. “Padfoot, is this you telling me you’re going to propose soon?”

“Maybe, maybe not. Wait, what was the thing that the one guy with the accent said?” Sirius asked, scrolling through his phone. “Oh, right! Jaybe… or jaybe not.”

Remus groaned. “Sirius, stop quoting the Arcane voice actors.”

Every character in a series doesn’t have to be attractive to be likable and not every character has to be likable to be attractive. Regular, average people exist and honestly they need more representation. 🙌

One thing that I admire about many Severus Snape fans is that they embrace his flaws, both physical and personal. He is drawn in fanart exactly as described in the books and is still appreciated by Snape fans.

I wonder how many Marauders fans could manage the same. So often, there is a tendency to rewrite the narrative to make our favorites (James or Remus, usually) into perfect models rather than ordinary, flawed characters that are far more relatable. There’s always room for imagination and creativity, of course, but there is unappreciated beauty in the average person too.

Alright, so this person was comparing Ron Weasley to James Potter and insinuating that Ron attacking Malfoy after Malfoy insulted his friends was somehow comparable to James Potter going after Snape with zero context, publicly stripping and choking him just because he was bored. Like, imagine the mental gymnastics they must perform daily to internally justify defending a guy who canonically spent his time hexing random people in the hallways for fun, bullying a much poorer and more vulnerable kid simply because that kid was friends with the girl he liked (toxic masculinity, much?). Not to mention telling said girl that if she went out with him, he'd stop tormenting her friend (wow, the best boyfriend ever: the one who blackmails you into dating him by promising to stop publicly humiliating your friend). And then lying to his girlfriend, claiming he wasn’t bullying anyone anymore, while still doing it behind her back.

And you have the audacity to compare this character to someone like Ron, who, on the rare occasions he was cruel or aggressive, was reacting to people who had FIRST attacked him or his friends. A guy who never went out of his way to bully anyone deliberately and didn’t find tormenting people for fun entertaining. Imagine—just imagine—thinking Ron Weasley is more similar to James Potter than Draco Malfoy (who is basically Slytherin!James) or Dudley Dursley (literally the person James’ own son compares him to). And why? Because you like Jily? Girl, you can ship whatever you want without whitewashing abusers or making up facts. It’s fine, really, you don’t need your OTP to be made up of saints for it to be valid. You can ship two absolute trash characters if you want, but don’t try to sell us lies, and definitely don’t whitewash abuse. And for the love of God, don’t compare an abusive character to someone who wasn’t.

It’s just maddening. James stans are annoying enough on their own, but the hardcore Jily shippers among them give me a full-blown headache.

Sorry, I’m just in a really bad mood today, and nonsense like this sets me off even more than usual.

How do you headcanon regulus personality to be like? Do you feel as though James and regulus complement each other in some ways?

why yes of course! i fundamentally disagree w outwardly mean and evil regulus bc it makes no sense canonically. perhaps in an au where he separates himself from his parents and gets to be happy but regulus cares too much to be outwardly rude to people . it would impact his reputation and his families reputation like he isn’t hexing people in the hallways . he’s a professional faker (shit talks behind people’s back most definitely) and feels guilty and horrible everytime he’s plagued with an evil thought . i know many people view him as a selfish character but i think he’s fundamentally not . he puts everyone else’s wishes for him above his own . he doesn’t really exist as a person outside of his family . i do think , outside of this control, he would be sarcastic and have very dry humor , would love to read and would be very introverted but long for connection and friendship. a loner not by choice, he enjoys company but has no idea how to reach for it. i think he loves magic and magical creatures and genuinely holds a lot of love in his heart that his family disapproves of !! regulus soft black !!! not to say i think regulus doesn’t have an attitude and an edge …. i just think he has fundamentally good morals sorry! i’m a good person regulus black enjoyer i can’t help it …. of course he’s morally gray but most of the decisions he makes r caused by the life long abuse and trauma he is subject to . regulus black was suicidal as hell in those deatheater meetings the moment he turned 18 he killed himself LMFAO . i just know he was the most uncomfortable person in there at any given moment . i think vaguely threatening posh regulus is true but it is his exterior and the assumptions ppl make … and then they get to know him and realize he’s got like a little kid version of himself who holds the world with so much fascination . and it makes you sad when you realize he thinks it’s a flaw and wants to stomp it out

(james potter who is unfortunately consistently acting like a frat bro at any given moment : assumes everyone naturally loves him and is mostly right which does evil things for him as a person . would die for his friends but is also insufferable to be around (affectionate) . harshly judgmental to anyone who doesn’t fit into his box of what counts as a good person (which by the way regulus challenges in a way i think helps james as a character!) . looping back to the frat bro thing i think james is the type of person to throw a crazy party and convince everybody to drink and do unsafe things for the fun and when u realize u don’t have a ride home and can’t walk u are so fucking SCARED to ask to stay the night bc of his general vibes but then he ends up taking care of you and getting u pain killers and making like an awesome breakfast for the whole crew? should be the worst person you know but just beneath the surface is so much good it’s impossible to hate him.) you would never think these people would get along but then they both love quidditch and train for it like it’s their life and they are both academics with serious opinions on art and literature they would both die for even though they are often opposing . they are the first people they can have a conversation with and truly match eachothers freak on any given topic. the fundamentals of both of their characters is how much they care about life and the things inside of it . it manifests in different ways but i truly think the thesis of jegulus is that they are so much more similar than one might think outwardly , and it creates a soft intimacy between them . and also just james introducing the concept of silliness fun and happiness into regulus’ life lol!!

what do you think lily's flaws were likely to have been? I hear so many people complain about her being a "Mary Sue" and I feel like it's true that the narrative doesn't really give us problems with her character in the way that it does for James/the other marauders.

Love this question!! I actually think we do see some of Lily's flaws in the narrative, they're just not quite as obvious (or grievous) as Sev's or James's.

In her conversations with Sev in the Prince's Tale, we see that she's willing to overlook pretty unforgivable behaviour because of her friendship with/loyalty towards Sev. He's friends with Mulciber and Avery, he calls the attack on Mary 'a laugh'. In the post-SWM conversation, she displays awareness that Sev calls other people 'mudblood'. Sure, she's not okay with it, but she still tolerates it; it's not until this actively affects her that she decides to end the friendship. I read this as a mixture of naïveté but also just willing blindness. She knows better deep down, but chooses to ignore it because of her love for Sev.

Another thing Lily-haters tend to harp on is her defending James, Sev's bully, to him in this conversation. And I do somewhat agree (although I think it's ridiculous to hold this as worse than everything Sev does to her) but I think it's another sign of her willingness to overlook certain behaviours that she shouldn't. She wants to believe that there's good in everyone because that's easier than facing reality. I don't read this line as 'you should forgive James for everything', I read it more as 'why can't everyone get along because that would be easier than dealing with conflict'. In some ways she's right, because there is good in both Sev and James-- it's somehow both her greatest strength and her greatest weakness. This blind trust is what gets her killed, it's what causes her so much pain in SWM, but it's also what saves her son in the end.

Another thing I think we see in SWM is her temper. Like I've said I think Harry gets his anger issues from Lily rather than from James, and I think she's impulsive, reckless, quick to anger. She leads with her heart. It would have been more rational to get a teacher but she dives into the confrontation personally. She insults both James and Sev pretty viciously in this scene (totally deserved, but still). Her giant squid rant is not some well thought out moral indictment of James's character or actions but an emotional response, a personal attack borne of anger. It's very similar to Harry's numerous all caps rages throughout OotP in which he takes out his anger on the people around him.

When thinking about Lily I think it's fair to extrapolate from Harry's character, because they're meant to be similar. Thematically, DH is largely about Harry realising that he's much more like Lily than he realised. Dumbledore says he was counting on Hermione to slow Harry down: Harry represents the intuitive approach, Hermione the logical. Too much reliance on intuition can't save the day, but neither can too much reliance on logic. It's about balance. Sev is the Hermione to Lily-- his learned ability to put aside his emotional needs and impulses for the greater good is ultimately how Lily protects her son through him.

Thinking about my oc yet again

James being the best father he can for Elsie but he finds himself subconsciously steering her away from things that would remind him too much of Arcade and the fact she's still Arcade's child as well, such as trying to direct her attention towards other hobbies if she shows interest in something that Arcade had liked, although it takes him some time to notice he's been doing that

Really only sets in once he realizes he's been putting off finding glasses for her despite her needing them when she's like 7 because her face and eyes are already so much like his and he wouldn't be able to avoid looking at the face of the man who ruined his trust reflected in their daughter. He cries by himself about it realizing he's not only making things more difficult for both of them than it needs to be out of his own past issues resurfacing but he's also become the same kind of softly overbearing father out of fear and love like his own dad was

OKay so does anybody think that the Kelvinverse movies can be (at least marginally) improved by essentially NOT being Kelvinverse?

AOS Kirk and Spock are not Kirk and Spock, just a random human/half-Vulcan command team

there is NO timeline-changing nonsense, the movies are set some time after TOS events

obviously people see parallels between AOS not-Kirk and not-Spock and TOS Kirk and Spock

so these kids still have some big shoes to fill

their backgrounds can stay roughly the same I suppose

not-Kirk's dad still dies, it's just not Nero who kills him

we can switch things around and give not-Spock a human dad and a Vulcan mom. He still tells VSA to go sit on a cactus though

Spock Prime can be there without time-travelling nonsense because it's his original timeline

the first movie ditches Nero and instead focuses on yanking Kirk Prime from the Nexus. He's reunited with Spock Prime, they get married (again) (obviously)

and the third movie can stay the way it is I guess? With more Spirk of course

the bottom line is, not-Kirk and not-Spock are not thrown together because of some cosmic destiny shit. Their circumstances are close but not the same. They find themselves in a similar situation as Kirk and Spock, but they still have to learn how to be a good command team. People kind of see them as their successors, so there's a lot of pressure on them. It's a perfect starting point for a compelling narrative
