I don't care about Nico and Bianca's casting. I care about watching Thalia get so angry at Bianca for leaving her little brother when she never got a second chance with her own. I care about the look on her face when Percy tells her that Bianca is joining the hunters. I care about her looking over the San Francisco skyline and coming to terms with the fact that her not-so-little sister doesn't need her anymore, and she will never see her little brother again, even though he is only a few miles away. I care about those being the things that convince her to join the Hunt. I care about her seeing Jason in Nico's eyes.

Anyone else notice a trend of Book 3 in every Riordanverse series always being a big tragedy? Case in point-

The Titans Curse- “You promised you’d protect her! You promised! You lied to me!”

Mark of Athena- “We’re staying together. You’re not getting away from me. Never again.”

The Burning Maze- “Where’s Jason?”

Thinking about Percy’s relationship with the Underworld children in comparison to his relationships with the sky children and how it all relates to the hierarchy and experiences Percy has been through.

Now, first of all, Percy is the victim of bullying at home and in school. His bully at home is Gabe and then he has all these bullies at school that pick on him and the other “weird kids” and Percy takes some of the other “weird kids” under his wing and protects them - like Grover and Tyson. Grover because of his crutches and disability and Tyson because of his mental delay and disability.

Percy takes those who can’t protect themselves as well as Percy can protect himself and he protects them from their bullies. Because no one protected him at home - no one was really there to see the abuse, granted, especially because Percy never made it known to his mom that we can tell from the canon material but even if Sally knew of the arguments Gabe and Percy got into, she never left him because she knew he needed Gabe’s scent to keep him safe, but from his pov that might be his mom failing to step in and protect him.

And so he’s not comfortable at home and prefers to be with his mom alone at Montauk. But my point is he doesn’t feel like he belongs at home with Gabe. Then he makes either one or no friends at his schools and then is bullied and blamed for everything before getting kicked out. He never has a place to call his own, to feel as if he belongs. He knows what it is to be judges and to be discarded and deemed unworthy.

And then he arrives at camp full of other kids like him. And while he’s unclaimed, he feels as if he finally finds a place he belongs and begins to make more friends. Then he’s claimed and shoved into a cabin all alone and avoided by all of camp besides Luke, Annabeth, Grover, and Chiron (from what I can remember and even then I’m pretty sure I recall a line about Annabeth barely tolerating his existence because she would always look at him as if he were stupid before ignoring him entirely or something along those lines correct me if I’m wrong).

So he finally finds a place he belongs only that no he really hasn’t because no one wants to touch him with a ten foot pole after being claimed. And then he completes a quest and is welcomed back with open arms - finding his place again. Only for next summer to roll around and Tyson is claimed as his brother as he is once again cast aside by camp for having a monster for a brother.

Then Thalia to comes back and take his place and is then respected and revered after a few months, taken under Chiron’s wing and trained personally by him and looked to for guidance by Annabeth and Grover and just completely respected and idolized despite the fact that she never even made it to camp and never completed a quest - she was just a child of Zeus.

So his place is toppled once more and he has to find where he belongs again. But then Thalia joins the Hunters and he settles back in to his position as sort of “leader” within camp. And he rides that position into war, working his ass off to prove time and time again that he can be trusted and respected like Thalia was.

NOW bringing in the children of the Underworld. Percy and Bianca clashed a bit in the beginning because of the Hunter thing but got over that pretty quick and Percy was somewhat protective of her in the sense that he cared deeply about what she was going through, and promising Nico to look out for her. See: the conversation on the porch of that one shop in New Mexico, Percy’s reluctance to let her go forward with his plan, the multiple lines of Percy blaming himself/saying it should’ve been him instead.

Percy and Nico have an admittedly rocky relationship with the whole Bianca thing and then Nico’s repressed gay crush on him, but they truly did care about each other and I’m sick of the animosity people insist is between them lol. Percy was always protective of Nico (though you only see that after the quest when Annabeth is back safe and sound and his mental state has recovered lmfao) and he took on the prophecy to protect him, everything Percy did was to protect Nico from the traumas of the godly world as best he could. Trying to get Nico to run from the skeletons, searching in the woods for him for hours, claiming the prophecy as his own and hid his identity from the Olympians and Chiron to keep him safe. And thats just in The Titan’s Curse.

Percy and Hazel have the most wholesome relationship out of the three, I will say. Percy is immediately protective of Hazel when he sees Octavian blackmailing and threatening her for her vote for praetor and he grips Riptide in preparation for a fight, reassuring her she wasn’t like Phineas, their conversation in Alaska where they both reassure each other :(( aww I love them sm okay okay let me move on.

Anyways, Percy always takes the Underworld kids under his wing just like he did Grover and Tyson, protecting them and looking out for them as best he can from those who would harm them whether it be bullies like Nancy or Mark or Octavian to prophecies and death. In comparison to his relationships with Thalia and Jason where they clash horribly before finding middle ground and becoming friends eventually.

And then the hierarchy between the big three kids where children of Hades/Pluto were always avoided like the plague and feared and seen as a bad omen and can work their asses off and fight endlessly for camp but will still only be seen as children of H/P by most. While children of Poseidon/Neptune make people wary but dont bring respect. I think theres also a hint of fear because of how powerful and temperamental P/N is and how that could transfer over along with P/N being known as the “father of monsters”. And Percy has to work his ass off to prove himself time and time again before being trusted and looked up to the way Percy is. And then theres children of Zeus/Jupiter who are completely and immediately revered and respected whether or not they’ve done anything of note simply because of who their father is.

Anyways all this yapping to say that Percy definitely sees himself in the Underworld kids and takes them under his wing to protect them as best he can while simultaneously arguing and fighting with children of Z/J because he sees his bullies in them simply from the hierarchy and power imbalance between the cousins (“power imbalance” being used loosely here). This is also no Thalia or Jason hate btw,, just character study I guess. I love Thalia and Jason is. There. I guess. (Kidding. He’s a cool character and concept but def not my fav lol)

Just having thoughts about the og series starting with Luke, Thalia, and Annabeth's promise to each other about family and Nico making Percy promise to protect Bianca, his sister.

Annabeth to Luke:

"Family, Luke, you promised."

Nico to Percy:

"you have to promise to keep my sister safe." "I… that's a big thing to promise, Nico.." "Promise," he insisted. "I'll do my best. I promise that.

Both promises being broken.

Also this part:

"You promised you would protect her," Nico said. He might as well have stabbed me with a rusty dagger. It would've hurt less than reminding me of my promise.

The dagger mention here ?? And Annabeth's dagger being the cursed blade part of the prophecy that Luke used to stab himself with that was cursed specifically because he broke his promise.

Nico's fallout with Percy being the catalyst to Percy accepting being the Hero of the Prophecy because he wanted to spare Nico from suffering more pain. And because he felt he owed it to his sister.

Annabeth's reminder and unwavering faith leading to Luke's sacrifice, completing his role as the hero of the prophecy.

Both promises being everything but also not enough in the end.

Neither of them getting back the family they wanted.

Both of them healing and making bonds that they let themselves have despite all their heartbreak and pain and fear of abandonment.

Annabeth finding a family in Percy and Grover (and Sally).

Nico finding a family in Hazel, never seeing her as Bianca's replacement. Nico eventually being able to accept Jason and Reyna and Will's friendship and love for him (don't think about reyna and bianca hunters of Artemis parallels or jason dying).

Just... both Annabeth and Nico desperately wanting to preserve their families.

Both Annabeth and Nico being so full of love.

Love being why Annabeth's faith in Luke never wavers, which saves the world in the end.

Love being the reason why he helps Percy and why he doesn't give up on Hades making amends with his family, which ultimately helps save them in the end.

The third book of Percy Jackson and the Olympians , The Heroes of Olympus and The Trials of Apollo are the most tragic. In The Titan's Curse , Zoe died, Bianca died and Nico's heart gets broken. In The Mark of Athena Percy and Annabeth fall into Tartarus. In The Burning Maze, Jason dies and Apollo attempts to kill himself and Piper is in misery. In all the cases it was the third book...

as somebody who works with kids, the fact that some characters are genuinely scared of Nico is so goddamn funny to me 😭 like. that’s a middle schooler. that is a clinically depressed middle schooler. what is he gonna do to you? hide behind the wall when you’re in the bathroom and yell “BOO!” when you jump out????

see my controversial read of canon is that bianca wasn't twelve. she was 13 and would've been turning fourteen.

and then there's the discrepancy between how old jason should be.

son of neptune is also funny because the characters have no significant issue with each other. every other previous mainline book involves some kind of tense dynamic with the questing characters. in tlt it's percy and annabeth. in som annabeth hates tyson and percy is defensive of him whilst trying to swallow the fact that he's embarrassed to have a monster for a brother. in ttc percy and thalia and zoë are all fighting with each other constantly. in botl percy is back to childish quarreling with annabeth over the luke/rachel stuff + grover is scared of tyson + annabeth is intensely antagonistic towards rachel. and in tlo percy and annabeth are bickering again + percy strangles nico for lying to him. even jason and piper (though jason is still immediately jumping off a cliff to save her whilst unaware that he can fly) have instant tension in their dynamic that runs through the veins of tlh and beyond + leo struggles with feeling like a third wheel + piper is worried about betraying them for her father and that impacts the way she interacts with them

and then son of neptune rolls around and percy is immediately just like Wow you two are just awesome. I know we just met but we're besties now. and frank and hazel both already like + know each other and they immediately stick their necks out for percy and like him. like this has never happened in any other book before. they don't clash with each other At All. they have uncomplicated affection for each other in all directions of their trio and that kindness and affection is the soul of son of neptune. they are just so so friendly to one another and the only source of awkwardness among the main characters is frank's crush on hazel since the start of the book, a crush that barely even results in any real tension or conflict because they're still best friends from the jump and hazel likes him too, she's just a lot less willing to do anything about it because she hates herself and thinks gonna die by the end of the week

I wish we got Jason being upset or jealous or something of Percy being closer to Thalia than he was. Annabeth too, tbh.

Like, can you imagine what that would have been like. Thalia is the ONLY family Jason really has. Camp Jupiter thinks of him as a soldier. His mom is dead and his dad is Zeus.

And he barely has any relationship with her!! He didn't even know she existed for most of his life and then they finally found each other but they had to split up after just a few hours and only saw each other a couple of times after that! Meanwhile Percy has gone on multiple quests with her and got to spend around a year with her and they were already pretty close at the start of TTC. Annabeth spent a year on the streets with her and also got to hang out with her pre-TTC to the point where Percy was competing with Thalia to be Annabeth's best friend (albeit one sided) And then there was Luke and Nico and the hunters of Artemis and even Reyna.

Just. Idk. Give me Jason wishing he could have that with Thalia.

Percy switching hair looks often throught the books to show 'the sea does not like to be restrained'.Baby dreads in tlt,wicks in ttc,twists ft.a faded from gray to white streak in tlo,afro in son due to amnesia preventing remembering perfered styles but muscle memoring back to dreads pre-climax,sea based material diy'd beads in moa and by nineteen,so much hair growing out time locs are needed and dying yellow, aqua,purple and pink streaks in them,white streak and black base still visible

Thalia suffering heat damage at a young age because Beryl was a racist ass white mom to her biracial kids.Her ressurectection also restored her hair's health in it's divinity and she spends her central book sporting bantu knots but in her next apperance in soh,she's upgraded to a frohawk and post-tlh,she updated it to include a sick ass electric blue dye job as sentimental symbolism for thunder and lightning being together once more,forevermore and apart never again

Nico introduced with an overgrown afro even Bianca didn't know how to take care of.He had to push it out of his eyes a lot but it became a helpful tool to hide away when the world fell off but Percy picked him back up on his feet during the botl-tlo interlude year they spent fixing things so they and eventually the rest of the Big Three Kids too started having wash days all together and it's makes him look like a very sweet cat.Eighteen year old Nico however chooses shoulder length dreads and a back of the head bun

Jason with natural dirty blonde textured hair.He often gets asked if it's his natural color and it goes from an understandable question to him to a button leaving him ever so slightly tweaking thanks to how overpressed it got.Juno wasn't going to let her champion walk around with janky haircuts so he had a flat top until time passed and he convinced a back from the dead Beckendorf to give him a lightning bolt fade as they chatted on how similar they are

Hazel following her heart whenever the opportunity for hair struck.Star-shaped afropuffs son era,cornrows moa protection that turned out for naught,hoh twists Percy made her impressively varied in shapes pink beads in celebration for her Tartarus survival(not really.they were crafted in terror she wouldn't make it out to cope and self-convince it wouldn't be her end.as it turned out,it was her second new beginnings or if you asked Hazel herself,her charming third chance)and butterfly locs entered her needs as soon as she found out about them and combined them as the final touch with purple dip tips

who’s actually the oldest big three kid😭

i’ve been thinking long and hard about this for way too long (i’m going off blood of olympus here)

nico and hazel are the oldest chronologically but biologically 14— actually i think hazel might have a year or two on him chronologically

thalia is biologically 15 but if she wasn’t in the hunt she’d be 18(?) or if she didn’t get the tree treatment she’d be 21 if my math isn’t off

percy is biologically the oldest at 16, that much is self explanatory (thank you for not making me scrounge the internet and being easy)

i think hazel might be the oldest mentally? she did die, but was still aware of her existence and time passing while she was dead, while nico doesn’t remember it being longer than 2 weeks (i think) in the lotus hotel

in terms of being alive without time being frozen for them, thalia is the oldest, despite her time as a tree? so she’s been aging the longest? but percy has spent the most consecutive years not having time altered at all

so i think we just have several answers here:

percy is biologically the oldest

hazel/nico are the oldest chronologically, but hazel is older mentally

thalia has the most consecutive years alive and aging

percy has the most consecutive years of being alive without interference

and jason gave me the least grey hairs

so if we’re scoring by who has the most points, hazel and and percy tie? i think??
