sugar sk*-*lls "Crystal Orchids" featuring Cortney Tidwell
Today we release "Crystal Orchids" - the final maxisingle from sugar sk*-*lls ahead of their full-length album, Star Time. This one features the otherworldly vocals of CORTNEY TIDWELL and some incredible remixes.
Fun story, the original vocal take from Tidwell was meant for a different song. Sugar Skull G. Seth West remarked, “We quickly realized we had a pile of diamonds on a paper plate and needed to build a track suitable for her vocals. That session was the one where we discussed how we would have to really challenge ourselves to execute the material to the level it deserved.”
They definitely built a suitable track, to say the least. It's a gorgeous song that packs an emotional punch.
Along with that we have 3 new remixes courtesy of EVE MARET, TAN and BOTH EYES. Personally, I'm a big fan of all three independently so having them on this maxisingle is an absolute honor.
There's also a cover of the track "Honeycomb" courtesy of MEADOWNOISE (another YK artist!). I recently learned that the accordion on this song belongs to Robbie Hunsinger's mother... Hunsinger appeared on the first maxisingle. We've come full circle!
---
Buy the maxisingle on Bandcamp here.
Stream the maxisingle anywhere here.
Watch the beautiful new visualizer video here.

i've always been kinda interested in making my own music for w/e game thing i make, & between listening to some king gizzard & the lizard wizard music b/c of that come see him video that everybody reblogs all the time and rewatching an old youtube video about the tuning of gamelan music AND finding an old talk about functional music construction AND discovering that there's now a builtin javascript synthesizer library (the 'web audio api') i was like, hey, i could actually try out synthing up some music.
like, i'm not gonna try putting anything real together yet but i could at least read up on the api since it seems incredibly complicated. it really is a conceptual modular synthesizer where components are linked together with signals. wires everywhere
anyway i was like, let's look at how to make a sine wave. "sine" is a preset but beyond that it gets into arbitrary waveforms
Here, we create a PeriodicWave with two values. The first value is the DC offset, which is the value at which the oscillator starts. A value of 0 is good here because it starts the curve at the middle of the [-1.0; 1.0] range. The second and subsequent values are sine and cosine components, similar to the result of a Fourier transform, which converts time domain values to frequency domain values. Here, with createPeriodicWave(), you specify the frequencies, and the browser performs an inverse Fourier transform to get a time domain buffer for the frequency of the oscillator. In this example, we set only one component at full volume (1.0) on the fundamental tone, so we get a sine wave. Bear in mind that the fundamental tone corresponds to the oscillator's frequency (which, by default, is 440 Hz). Therefore, altering the oscillator's frequency effectively shifts the frequency of this periodic wave along with it.
The coefficients of the Fourier transform should be given in ascending order (i.e. (a+bi)ei,(c+di)e2i,(f+gi)e3i etc.) and can be positive or negative. A simple way of manually obtaining such coefficients (though not the best) is to use a graphing calculator.

3 Game/Coding Resources!
I wanted to put together a few resources I found for people who might be planning to make games, or might be looking to learn coding!
The first resource is for anyone looking to learn how to code, build a portfolio, and get Certifications:
This is something I've recently been using myself and I can attest that it is an excellent resource!! They have many different paths you can learn, and right now I’m on the Responsive Web Design Certification. You can learn HTML and CSS, in order to create responsive pages. It teaches you through projects, where it breaks down different parts of the coding language and shows you how to use it. Some projects are optional, and some you have to complete in order to earn your certification. Certification projects don’t have instructions, only a rubric of what the project needs to be able to do, but you can learn all those skills in the optional projects! They also have Javascript, Frontend Development, Information Security… the list goes on! The website is run by a really cool non profit. I definitely recommend giving it a try!!
2. The second is for game developers who are looking for background music:
@/茶葉のぎか (Nogika Chaba on twitter) makes some really awesome 8bit-sounding BGM! And a lot of it is free for commercial/non commercial use!!
Make sure to check the description (you can translate to your language) for their policies. Many of their videos are tagged #freeBGM, which if you check their Pixiv Fanbox terms of service (in the desc of each video, please do check it before you use it) states that you are able to use the music in commercial/non commercial works:
Tumblr media
2. The third resource is for students:
Whether you're a university student, college, high school, or elementary, Github gives you free Github pro, as well as a curation of free offers! You do need a piece of student ID (proof that you indeed belong to an institution, eg. report card, student card, etc), but it has a host of offers. Microsoft offers free cloud training through this, there are multiple offers for learning a new coding language for free (eg. Codedex free 6-month subscription, which will also give you certificates once completed), you can get free domain names, the list goes on! If you are a student, I highly recommend that you give it a try, since it's 100% free!

only commenting on this bc regardless of the quality of homestuck/anyone's opinions on homestuck. i want more people to do this with their art. but for that one anon yea it's got a soundtrack bc it's mixed media! the meat is regular webcomic panels but there's also gameplay sections and video sections etc etc. toby fox did a chunk of the og music, that's why u might've heard that megalovania was vriska's theme before it was in undertale.
i'm gonna say that megalovania being vriska's theme is propaganda for her. but u r welcome to not post this if u r sick of hearing about homestuck
Mixed media my beloved, there really should be more multimedia web art because the hosting platform of the internet itself lends itself sooooo well to it. Like trust me, learn some basic html and css and maybe some JavaScript and you won’t regret it, you can do beautiful things

I’ve always struggled to define what I do in one word. I draw, I write, I code, I sew. I keep creating because the impulse doesn’t leave me alone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really love the word geisha for its etymology. A geisha (芸者) is literally "a person of the arts" — gei (芸) means "art, craft, performance" and sha (者) means "person". In it's core it is not a job, nor a label, it is a way of being. A class.
Before I ought to call myself anything, here’s a shortcut to understanding what you’re dealing with, a list of my skills and interests:
𝕳𝖊𝖑𝖑𝖔 𝖙𝖍𝖊𝖗𝖊, 𝖎’𝖒 𝕶𝖆𝖔𝖒𝖚
✦ Visual Arts – digital and traditional illustration, oil painting, watercolor, character design, comics, mixed media, concept art.
✦ Writing – short stories, scripts, poetry, worldbuilding, narrative design for games and comics, introspective philosophical ramblings that I turn eventually into something else.
Tumblr media
✦ Crafts – sewing, embroidery, fabric manipulation, sculpture, DIY repairs, customization of clothes and objects.
✦ Tech & Games – HTML/CSS, a bit of JavaScript, simple game development (mainly card games), game design, automations, layout creation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

✦ Audio & Video – video editing, experimental soundtracks, narration, music, video concepts with visuals.
youtube
Silly attempt of studying music production
✦ Mystical & Philosophical – tarot reading, palmistry, hermetic knowledge, lucid dreaming, dreamwork, psychedelic exploration, and ontological curiosity.
**Obviously, I’m better at some of these things than others, and there’s still a lot I can’t do — but probably not for long, I am crazy. There’s this restlessness in my mind (the voices),
in my soul that keeps me in motion:**
✧*。creating, training, learning, thinking. ✧*。
If you like my art, you can support my work just by following me across any platform — kaomunokami anywhere, if you didn't find me, it is because I'm not there. To the wealthbearers of forgotten fortunes, you can also support me through Ko-fi.
Given the proper credit, sharing my art is completely allowed and even encouraged, on any platform.
**You are welcome to DM me to chat about anything, be aware that I am Miss Talkalot. **

Capstone Log #3 - A Retrospective
For my third post, since the break is over, I've decided to touch on the work I did before the break, so I can have a fresh start. This is a written reflection instead of a gameplay and code overview, as I'll be going over the three Godot projects I've made so far, and talking about my next steps in becoming confident without tutorials and being able to sustain my own code without hitting any major roadblocks.
The first game I made with Godot was a simple platformer, following a tutorial by former Unity developer Brackeys, who returned from his four year hiatus off of YouTube to start creating Godot tutorials as many game developers have switched from Unity to Godot, due to Unity's increased pricing polices. Godot is free, open source, and can create both 2D and 3D games, which makes it a great alternative to the former.
The tutorial I followed created a simple platformer, which is often one of the first games someone creates in a new engine, as it is a simple formula, and teaches the basics of code, so it is easy for newcomers to get a grasp on the differences between any coding languages they've used previously. GDScript, Godot's coding language, has many similarities to other widespread coding languages like Python and JavaScript. A gameplay video and the tutorial I used will be attached, The game does not have a lot of substance, but it has collectable coins, moving enemies, moving platforms, music, a death system, and variables that change text, some of which are in common with the other games I've made.
Moving on from my first project, the two other games I've completed (as showcased in my previous posts), have only built upon the core concepts I've picked up with Brackey's video and the video course I've been watching from GDQuest. Next, my goal is to follow "Learn to Code from Zero", a free open source app, to learn more about GDScript and Godot without reliance on being told every step.

Andy's 2024 Year in Review
I tend to work on a lot of small projects with a smattering of larger ones mixed in. Often I end the year thinking I didn't do all that much, but then I start going through my posts and realize that I did more than I thought! Hard to believe that stuff I did last January was this year!
I've fallen out of the habit of doing these year-in-review posts, which is a shame, but I'm turning that around right now! Here's a quick look at all the things I made last year.
EMMA
Tumblr media
Probably the biggest thing for me is another successful year of the coop I'm a part of, EMMA Technology Cooperative. After a somewhat tough 2023, we bounced back this year. Seeing us survive a lean time and watching the coffers refill in the past year really drove home the value of organizing around cooperation as opposed to infinite growth. And if you're reading this and in need of a creative technologist, please drop us a line!
Taper - January
Tumblr media
A the start of this year I was on the editorial board of Taper, online literary journal for computational poetry. I only assisted with one issue (which I also contributed to!) but it was a very new experience for me and I'm happy I could be a part of it!
A few years ago I kind of stumbled into the occasional piece of digital poetry without ever realizing. I was doing a literal poetry reading when I realized that I write poems from time to time. It's very fun that my practice occasionally pulls me in unexpected directions.
MAGFest - January
Tumblr media
Every year, we bring all of the games in the Arcade Commons collection to the Music and Games Festival just outside of Washington DC. It is our biggest show of the year by a mile and I love it every time. There is a DIY spirit to MAGFest that really sets it apart from any other con I've been to. We're well underway for 2025 as I write this. As I frequently do, I emceed a bunch of our tournaments.
The Algorithm - February
Tumblr media
What a fun project this was! Alia ElKattan and Lujain Ibrahim contacted me about their Mozilla Foundation-funded project to explain how algorithmic feeds work. I created modular P5JS animations to serve as the "content" for their app.
They found me via the P5 tweetcarts I had been posting during the pandemic. I got to explore some of those same ideas without the super tight character restrictions.
Check it out here.
EMMA Skillshare - March
Tumblr media
I did a small workshop on getting PICO-8 to communicate with Javascript. This was the basis for my project Pico Pond which I wrote about on the EMMA Blog.
This skillshare took those ideas and presented them in a livestream, which you can watch here.
Our Generation - May
Tumblr media
I was contacted by Nick Montfort to submit a piece of computer generated poetry for a small-run book called Our Generation: Programs + Computer-Generated Texts. I channeled my inner Jenny Holzer for this and really enjoyed it. The full src appears at the top of the page and it was interesting to factor that in to make sure the output exactly filled the page. I keep thinking it would be fun to do a series using this size restriction but I haven't done it yet.
You can see my full page here.
Tastebud Tapdancer - May
Tumblr media
You've been swallowed by a giant serpent but you're trying to make the best of it.
A little video game with a source code of just 500 characters! Made for TweetTweetJam 9 You can play it here.
The Indomitable Rocket Dog - June
Tumblr media
Around this point in the year is where I started working on my current project, The Indomitable Rocket Dog. I'm enjoying this game so much. I haven't made a real twitchy arcade game since PARTICLE MACE, which just celebrated its 10th birthday. It is still very early but I feel really good about this one!
After MAGFest 2024 I was percolating on physics-y arcade games mostly because I am so deeply in love with Hoverburger by Nick Santaniello. Before I knew it my love of N++ was mixed in there as well.
I'm writing all of my own physics in C++ because I had a vague sense of how I want it to feel and it's a hobby project so I can do what I want.
I've been documenting my development on it in a mastodon thread.
Isabelle Poppy And Bling - August
Tumblr media
OK, this one isn't new at all! This is a flash game I made in 2009 for musician Justin Braun. But this year I got it playable on the web again!
Like so many game developers my age, I got my start with Macromedia Flash. This game felt like the culmination of my style at the time, which was heavily influenced by Animutation. I was starting to be more deliberate with my collage style as opposed to aiming for totally random elements. I think I got paid $600 for it, which felt huge at the time.
1K Pac-Man - September
Tumblr media
Another size coded game. This time it's as faithful a recreation of Pac-Man as I could muster in 1024 bytes of source code. All of the ghost logic is accurate to the original!
You can play it here. I'm very pleased with the mouth animation.
I made it for PICK-1K Jam 2024. I do wish I had read the page a little more carefully though. The jam required compressed source to be 1024 bytes and I did raw source. The game is only 723 compressed bytes so I had a lot of room to expand, but by the time I realized that I had painstakingly trimmed and optimized my code and I couldn't imagine untangling it. Oops.
Cloud Gobblers - November
Tumblr media
Arcade Commons received a grant from the Brooklyn Arts Council to create an arcade machine showing a collection of games that incorporate weather data into the gameplay. EMMA was commissioned to make one of the games. Cloud Gobblers is a snake-style game where the playfield is a video satellite field of global cloud coverage over a period of 48 hours.
This was the first time all of the members of EMMA worked together on one project!
Three Tapestries - October
Tumblr media
I didn't make many pen plotter drawings this year, but I really liked this one. You can see the full thing here.
It's currently still available in my shop! Until somebody buys it it will be hanging on the wall in my office.
Lever Up Jam - December
Tumblr media
Back in 2021, I worked with Matt Lepage on an alt-control game jam called Jam Jam Revolution. We prepped a parts list so all participants could build the same controller and make games for it. This year we decided to dust off that idea with the Lever Up Jam. This time there will be a full-sized cabinet at MAGFest that the games can be played on!
My favorite TweetCarts / Postcarts This Year
I no longer use Twitter, but I have been making the occasional tweetcart (a PICO-8 sketch with source code 280 bytes or less) and posting them on tumblr and mastodon. But there was an exciting development towards the end of the year! Lexaloffle, the creator of Pico-8 created a section on the BBS for 300 char or less "Postcarts", so we now have a centralized home for these little byte-sized demos.
Here are three of my favorite postcarts that I made this year:
Spinning Cube v3 - April
Tumblr media
p=pset::_::cls()for i=0,99do u=0s=i/4+t()/5x=64+sin(s)*39a=64+sin(s+.25)*39y=39+cos(s)*9b=39+cos(s+.25)*9line(x,y,a,b,6)for k=0,99do if x>a and i<4and k<50then line(x,y+k,a,b+k,k>48and 7or 9+i)p(x,y+k,7)p(a,b+k)end v=pget(i,k)u+=v if(v>6)break if(u>0)p(i,k,8)end end flip()goto _
Big year for making things spin. You can check out my tumblr post to see all my attempts at perfecting this spinning cube. The outlines were the real cherry on top for me.
Balatro Spinning Card - May
Tumblr media
a=abs::_::cls()e=t()for r=0,46do for p=0,1,.025do j=sin(e)*20k=cos(e)*5f=1-p h=a(17-p*34)v=a(23-r)c=1+min(23-v,17-h)%5/3\1*6u=(r-1)/80z=a(p-.2)if(e%1<.5)c=a(r-5)<5and z<u+.03and(r==5or z>u)and 8or 8-sgn(h+v-9)/2 g=r+39pset((64+j)*p+(64-j)*f,(g+k)*p+(g-k)*f,c)end end flip()goto _
This was so hard to make! I can't believe I did it. I wrote a giant writeup breaking down the 279 byte source code on the EMMA blog.
Fuji - October
Tumblr media
pal({7,12,140,13,129,1,5,8,8,14,142,143,7},1)r=rnd::_::x=r(128)y=r(128)c=9+y/26-2+r(1.5) if(y<((x+40)/6)^1.6and y<((178-x)/6)^1.6and y<79+r(2))c=2.5-sgn(y-45-sin(x/21)*r(4))*1.5+r(2.5-sgn(x-69-r(8)-y/3+25)*.7) pset(x,128-y,c)a=r(1)d=r(25)pset(28+sin(a)*d,30+cos(a)*d,9)goto _
I made this during some downtime on a vacation to Japan. I was hoping to see Fuji the next day and the clouds wound up being kind to us, giving an amazing view.
I almost never make representational art and I was really happy with how this turned out.
That's it! I hope you all have a great 2025!

9 People You Want to Know Better
Hey, thanks for tagging me @cawyden! Here's some personal info (which should've been some nice RT fanart instead but I've been slacking off, I'm sorry!)
Three Ships: Tough. To be frank I mostly obsess over particular characters but not so much ship anyone. I often really love frenemy-type dynamics or unlikely-work-partners situationships more than anything though, but I don’t see them romantically most of the time unless it’s explicitly canon. Still may be worth listing some of my faves since there’s heavy chemistry involved: Phoenix Wright / Miles Edgeworth (Ace Attorney), Harrier / Kim (Disco Elysium) — I'd bite off my leg if I must to not disappoint Kim. Zagreus / Thanatos (Hades) — this one I ship in every sense alongside the other two available ships from Hades.
First Ship: The first one I was legit getting weak in the knees over was Hibari Kyouya / Rokudou Mukuro from Katekyo Hitman Reborn (I feel old)
Last Movie: I believe it was “Kung Fu Hustle” that was leaving Netflix a couple of weeks ago and it was stupidly hilarious
Last Song: I’ve been weirdly obsessed with “Herald of Darkness” from Alan Wake 2, I’ve rewatched the music video waaay more times than I deem healthy
Currently Reading: “Quackery” by Lydia Kang & Nate Pedersen and “Eloquent JavaScript” by Marijn Haverbeke (boy I’m so bad at finding time for books you could probably ask me again in a couple of years and I would still be reading these exact same ones)
Currently Watching: Dungeon Meshi, Dimension 20: Never Stop Blowing Up, my regular true crime fix, and soothing ASMR item restoration videos
Currently Eating: just having a cup of mint tea
Currently Craving: To pet some cats 🥺
Tagging:  I’m so sorry for breaking the rules but I’ll pass on tagging by name this time, I’m pretty sure everyone I know has been tagged already and I get really socially anxious thinking about this too hard! If you’re seeing this and want to have a go you’re absolutely welcome!!

This was something like the vision i had for My Utopian Ideal Of Playlist Website btw:
Plays music through youtube and soundcloud or something so it wouldn't have to host things (other than images, I guess...) , I think Universal Music Group doesn't let you play songs from youtube in embeds or something so this would singlehandedly ruin everything. I also thought of maybe you could link externally hosted mp3s but that sounds like it could get scary, somehow. This is all irrelevant hypotheticals because I would never know how to make this anyways.
I kind of wouldn't want to deal with like a social media angle to it (The idea of "front pages" makes me shy.) so maybe it would just make like standalone pages that could be shared only through linking people to them. Like carrd but for only this specific purpose? Maybe there would be profile pages. The idea of moderating a website sounds like the scariest thing in the world though so I would never do all this
(Maybe if I wanted this to exist but not have to deal with moderating it a sort of static html generator would make more sense (and not have to deal with hosting images !), but that just doesn't seem the same...then it nerfs the audience to just people that are making websites. and in my ideal world my Utopian Playlist Website would be for the purpose of encouraging tiktok children to be better at giving video game characters music so the average neocities user is not really my entirely fictional base for my entirely fictional website.)
ANNOTATIONS!!! ON THE SONGS!!! I MISS THEM!!!!!
I made a picture
Tumblr media
Further notes on this:
Sorry it's like very modern website ambient blur rounded corners that's just what it looked like in my head. I made the annotation too low contrast and hard to read accidentally. Maybe if this were real I would want the colors to be customizable but i do kind of mistrust people with the ability to change every color on a webpage sometimes...
I kind of wasn't sure how the actual playlist should be displayed, I initially thought of it just going down the page but then I realized it'd make more sense to keep the cover art in view so i enclosed them in a little box (also it was easier to do in a mockup drawing). Feels a little claustrophobic the way i did it though, wouldn't be that good for playlists that have a lot of songs (mine are usually around 8-14 songs long so i didn't really think of people that might genuinely just be able to make extremely long playlists)
Also in my excitement to include individual song annotations I forgot to make any space for a playlist description. Oops
None of this will ever happen. Because I am not even remotely a web developer. When I was supposed to demonstrate an ability to use javascript for the final of a web design class i took in high school i just didn't do that because i didn't understand javascript and the person reviewing the assignment was my mom and i figured she wouldn't notice. She did notice

Heya, Carrot! I recorded a playthrough of OFW with a friend a bit ago, and I only just now realized while editing that I had the music WAY too quiet. 😅 Is it okay if I ask where to find the OST?

What's wrong with floating-point numbers? (OR why can't calculators be trusted?)
Floating point numbers; for the mathematicians: irrational numbers, even if they could otherwise be represented rationally; for everybody else: decimal points.
MICROSOFT ARTICLE FROM MARCH OF 2023 ON THE ISSUE
An excerpt: "Never assume that a simple numeric value is accurately represented in the computer. "
This has to do with hardware issues, binary specifically, being limited in how it can represent a decimal. Because you can't really split a bit in half like you can an irrational number.
Here's my question though; why isn't there more precision control?
For example; in JavaScript: 0.2+0.1=0.3000000004 (or something like that).
Why does it bother to go so many digits deep in the first place? Why aren't there limits in place! Or at least; limitations a programmer can set in order to ensure accurate enough precision.
I should, theoretically. Just be able to get 0.3 if I set precision to 2, but that's not an option. (At least not in JavaScript, which you would think is the best place.for it given we want accurate *enough* and not *perfect* anyway.)
My history with studying AMD processors, video cards, and stocks; suggests that outside of video cards, AMD is actually the most accurate at floating point calculations. (This includes experience with video and music processing, file compression, and other complex processes)
Which, low-key; if you're gonna get into Video or Music editing, (especially as more than a hobby, I'd go with AMD, other processors focus on integer calculations instead.)
Now, typically, Video Cards are *much much better* at floating point calculations. And that's what videogames, 3D software, crypto, and other complex scientific software tend to default their calculations on. Because of the accuracy.
But that leads me to my next question; since floating point accuracy can't ultimately be trusted in a binary type system... How does crypto intend to stay for the long-haul, once that limit is breached in modern hardware?
We have to be close, right? I mean once the adoption of crypto drives mining at a higher rate than hardware is actively improving.
What about other security features and programs? Would this Introduce security flaws?
I know for a fact that most scientific calculations are inaccurate. Like, just look up 1+0+1+0 or 1+1-1+1-1. Which demonstrates these inaccuracies leading to, and suggesting that 1+1-1+1 eventually equals 999999999(+more 9s).
This includes your excel financial spreadsheet that you use for budgeting.
I know this, because I've done individual calculations that don't line up with manual interpretation that require summation over the *simpler formulas*
How many mathematic and scientific papers at a college and PhD level then; are compromised because they used flawed hardware without adjusting for inaccuracies?
I wonder...
Anyway... My real question is; why isn't there a better way to deal with the issue yet?
Food for thought.

bleacherreport articles are showing up blank (screenshot works but the actual webpage archive is blank). Could you take a look at this? Thanks!
e.g. bleacherreport*com/articles/2583445-nba-opening-night-gets-the-hotline-bling-drake-music-video-treatment
I made a fix for future bleacherreport saves, but this one seems unrecoverable (React often cleans the whole page on JavaScript error, and this is what was happening on bleacherreport)
