I listened to the Golden AU playlist again and now I'm Feeling Things
Herr it is if anyone wants to listen to it ^^
It says Second Chance AU because that was the placeholder name before I came up with a better title lol
#skylar says stuff#cat quest 2#cat quest 2 au#golden au#idk if anyone is going to really understand what each song means#but I guess I can say that save for the very first song#each song swaps between Felis and Canis#up until Bitter Water where that and every song after is both of them#Soldier Poet King was added specifically as a reference to Kirry's prophesy that I imagine they adopted eventually#even if it wasn't real to begin with#and while all the songs are actually associated with either my headcanoned backstoris for them or stuff that happened in the game#the very last one is meant as a credits song to the actual Golden AU story#if I ever finish it lol#I'd love to one day go more into depth about each of these songs#maybe I will eventually but not tonight lol#I also have another one that's not directly Golden AU related but I place under the category anyway#it's actually focused more on Lioner and Wolfen before and during the game#but Golden AU also partially rewrites the game canon#nothing too extreme#just adding a little bit more depth to things and adding in events specifically between the protags#things we never really got in game

My Full Thoughts on Chapter 1 of Eden's Garden
When Chapter 1 was released, I told myself I would get to it eventually. These past 24 hours turned out to be 'eventually', so here I am, crawling from the woodwork to talk about Eden's Garden again.
If you kind of recognise my blog and don't know why, it's probably because I wrote the big animal symbolism post two years ago. Yeah, it's me, back at the conspiracy board again, painting on my clown make-up and putting on a tin foil hat...
Except not really, because some of my analysis on that post seems to hold some weight. I'll discuss my general thoughts first, then delve into the parts of that post that seem right (as well as observations I probably should have made...)
Spoilers ahead!
Where to begin... I think I'll just list things as they come to mind.
I loved the motive (personally, I think the secrets motive should have been a mainstay for the series), and I loved that we got to see a few of the secrets. Hopefully, we get more revealed later on, because I am very nosy.
The bunk-buddies scheme was also great. We got the unlikely beginnings of a friendship between Kai and Damon, as well as the 'one-bed' trope (the trope that sailed a thousand fics...)
Eva being revealed as the Ultimate Mathlete was... odd, but it added a lot of depth to her character. She's an awkward, paranoid nerd, not a cool, mysterious sort of character. That was really endearing, though the reactions of the others felt odd, because like... Grace is a golfer, I don't think she has room to look down upon the mathlete.
Ingrid really got to shine, she quickly became one of my favourites.
The Peggle-based economy is evil, but I got up to 70 maracoins after a few tries so I can't really complain (I am so bad at it, I fired so many directly into abyss...)
The set-up for the murder was compelling, and the mystery made a lot of sense... mostly. It was reminiscent of both the first and second trials from Danganronpa 2 (blackout, extension cord schemes, unwilling witness, drugging), but managed to feel unique and memorable.
I made a post last night with my prediction for the killer that read:
"Logically, I suspect Ulysses. Narratively, I suspect Eloise.
I am not confident either way, I will be amazed if itâs one of the tournament 8.
As for the method, Iâll go with this theory: Wolfgang was either called down to the boiler room through the note (OR he intercepted a summons meant for someone else), he arrived around 8:10, as instructed. He was knocked out with the rolling pin, the killer drew blood from his neck to splatter through the halls (falsifying evidence), and set some kind of bomb up at the generator. They put Wolfgang in the water, reversed the lock, locked the door. If this is anything close to the order of events, then Iâm actually more suspicious of Jean.
Some kind of magic battery was mentioned, which Jett and Jean spoke about. If that was the basis for the destruction of the generator (or, if it was the cause of the electricity), that would implicate the two people who knew about it. Jean was late to the tournament, and knew that being there would give him an alibi. Wolfgang had burns on his hands - maybe Jett knows a thing or two about that specific burning and can crack the case open."
I came pretty close to unravelling the murder method. However, I forgot to consider a few things (the door being unlocked, the knife (which I had been thinking of, I'd just written it off as irrelevant because Wolfgang hadn't been stabbed), as well as other pieces of evidence).
I remembered the battery, which I think is at least a little impressive (even if I failed to consider that literally everyone else had heard about it).
The case was making total sense up until the battery hanging from the vents, which felt a liiiittle bit like a wild assumption. Like... sure, it does make sense, but I kind of don't buy it? That's where it started to lose me a little. And then Damon's like "Obviously you had access to the cameras", which sounds like something Hiro would come up with. When it came to timing it, my solution was that she just... looked at the time on her console. They tell the time, usually. They do that. She looked at the time, and assumed that Diana was going to the meeting because she implied as much the day prior. Having the camera thing be the smoking gun seemed a stretch.
And then, after the trial, Eloise refers to the device as a tablet, and then Tozu does, and then everyone else does when it was being referred to as a gaming console earlier. That was odd. Overall, it was a really good trial, but it ended up being just a little bit more complicated than it needed to be.
(Also, when they were talking about shortening the wire, the characters are like "Nuh uh, there's no way they could have cut it, nothing coulda done that!" when I got Genocider Sho's scissors from the gacha... if Eva gets a magic camera DS, I don't think scissors are that out of the picture, guys)
I didn't start to suspect Eva until well into the trial, so it made for a good twist. I liked the idea that she believed she was at risk because everyone hated her (not sure if the traitor perk time limit was needed, but it was fine).
I found the sword minigame kind of janky, sometimes I could break statements before they appeared, usually a sideways slash would insta-break them while a downward slash would be useless, and I found myself unable to progress because when you break yellow statements the opponent gains ground. That might be the case in Danganronpa, it's been a minute, and I don't think I read the tutorial as well as I should have, but I found these segments frustrating.
But dear, merciful Ullyses, nothing could prepare me for argument altercation. That game is BUSTED, it crashed four times and was only beatable for me by using the slow-down bug and through RNG luck. I want to know who on the team tested it and thought it was a reasonable difficulty spike, because I suspect they might be a competent Touhou player. I know that to some extent this was a skill issue, I was not very good at it, but the only way that I could prevent crashing was to stand dead still and wait for the death beam/crow attack to stop.
Which goes against the entire point of dodging the bullets, unfortunately. Presentation-wise, it's perfection, I love the look, the Biblical reference in the sprites (it's the creation of man painting), the music is great...
I think it could be fixed by reducing the quantity of bullets (I imagine the crashes were brought on by either the assets being funky somehow, as it was always the purple attacks, or by the sheer amount of entities on screen). In terms of difficulty, incorporating a healing mechanic (if you get bad RNG and she has a bad attack pattern you're doomed), or by removing the shield mechanic. Let me hit her outside of the big bullet, I beg, it makes gameplay feel slow and tedious, especially when she keeps dodging the big bullets.
It's hard to say how long I spent on argument altercation, but I think it was probably over an hour... Mostly because I had to replay a bunch of the trial after that first crash. That wasn't suuuper fun, but these things happen, and it didn't take too long to get back to bullet hell.
I experienced a slightly less devastating bug before the trial, in other news. I think it happened because I saved on a 'truth bullet get' screen. That one resulted in the image for 'Toshiko's Fetch Quest' being stuck on my screen... like, permanently. I was worried that I was going to have to redo the whole investigation (because it wasn't going away for the trial, and reloading wasn't helping), but selecting 'start from trial' on the menu fixed it, because it brought me to a refreshed state of the game.
The quality of the execution was really good. I don't think it's my favourite concept for a math's themed demise, but it was solid, and very, very brutal. Seeing Damon crying at the end kind of got me, he's going to be in for a rude awakening when he unpacks the realisation that he's as fallible as everyone else is.
Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and I look forward to what comes next!
Now, for the parts of my analysis that seem accurate...
"Interestingly, ravens are the natural enemies of farmers⌠and Wolfgang has a distinct agricultural reference on his lapel."
Look how the turns have tabled!
"Lawyer man is, quite literally, a wolf in sheep's clothing. His name has the word 'wolf' in it. He has a sheep on his clothing. Does Wolfgang obsess over justice due to a guilty conscious? Is it a cover to mask his deepest, most despicable thoughts?"
Not the craziest read on my part, the writing was kind of on the wall with this one, but it's neat that the idea was referenced specifically in his secret.
"Sharks, apparently, symbolise protection and guidance, so I think Desmond will probably pair up with another characterâŚ"
His secret implies that he's devoted to another character, who I'm pretty sure is Eloise. They're always together.
"Also, chameleons are seen as 'not standing up for what's right', so I guess that's where Diana falls on the morality spectrum, maybe possibly?"
This kind of falls into the start of her character development. She didn't admit to seeing Wolfgang's death, and she didn't actually try to save him. Now, she's vowing to be a better person (transforming), and she even referenced the chameleon on her bracelet.
"Not much to say here, it could represent vulnerability (butterflies are fragile)"
This man is, indeed, fragile, wow, he loves to scream.
To harken back to the name post (which was less viewed than the symbolism one, but honestly, fair), I am SO mad I didn't make the connection between Eva (Eve) and original sin, her being the first blackened makes SO MUCH SENSE! I did mention Eve, but didn't touch upon her most defining moment, how foolish I was.
I think that's all for now. Good fangan, see you again in another two years!

For the past week or so, I've been logging in to Disney Dreamlight Valley again (after a 2 month hiatus đ
). They have a "Haunted Holiday Star Path" event going on right now. When it comes to games I genuinely like, I do actually have fomo and I hate it, lol. So, here I am đ
I've been playing a bit of catch up. Like, they added Beauty and the Beast! That was my favorite OG Disney movie growing up. And then Mulan came along and I was like !!! Okay now those two are my favorites (because I couldn't decide between the two).
I also finally watched the live action Beauty and the Beast for the first time. It's been out for a while now, I know... I'm just slow when it comes to watching movies or anything on tv. In my opinion it was very well done! I'm not a harsh critic though.
I also watched the live action Little Mermaid and I really loved it. It gave the characters so much more depth, and displayed more marine creatures than I thought they would have. The actors put so much life and emotion into their vocals in their songs, I was very impressed.
And I touch on this a bit below, but being an octo-nerd, there were things about Ursula that they added to the movie, that was not in the original, and I was like holy crap! I wonder how many people are going to catch onto that? It's when she's shuffling through her ingredient cabinets to create one of her concoctions and her 'arms' (she refers to them as 'tentacles', probably because younger audiences will be like ??? if she says arms, but the correct term is actually 'arms'). They are acting independently from her because octopuses have nine brains. One brain in each arm and one in the mantle (head). So each arm thinks for itself. When she says she can't find anything, everything always gets lost, it's probably because her eight arms are putting things back on the shelves however they please and her main-brain (mantle i.e. head) isn't paying attention to keep track of it all đ
Okay- weird thing that I complain about often to my friends cause we all play this, and unrelated to the live action movie. Eric, in this game, stalks me, and it's flippen weird. I think everyone who plays this has a character that stalks them though, as if it's in the programming and it's RNG of who it is. I say that because I'll go to Twitch and watch it happen to streamers, and they'll make comments about their 'stalker'. It's just somehow my 'stalker' ended up being Eric đ¤ˇđťââď¸. For some, it's Kristoff. Others, it's Maui. I dunno... it's weird.
(For the record, I know they're all programmed to come and find you, but I mean- in this case, there's ONE specific character that follows you WAY MORE than usual.)
Anyone who knows me, knows I have this obsession with the Ocean (also space) and octopuses, and jellyfish... hence why I have the Ursula attire (she's the Octo Queen!). Her quest line, should you put out the moonstones and buy her bundle, is worth it imo, but I'm also biased as heck. I just find it ironic that I'm literally dressed like Ursula 2.0 and Eric stalks me more than half the time I'm in-game, lol đ. The sound of his flute puts me in that state of like đ -startled cat, eyes wide, looking everywhere, ducking behind furniture-
Ariel, go pay more attention to your man plskthx. I will give it to the live action production for the movie. The actor who plays Eric is handsome and plays the role well đđť (doesn't make me wanna hide any less though in-game đ)
I totally veered off course of why I'm writing this post. My rambling is getting worse, akjdhjs.
SO. The star path...!
Last year when we got the first Halloween star path, if memory serves, I recall it not having any Tim Burton, The Nightmare Before Christmas items at all and being really bummed out about it. I figured it was because they couldn't get a contract signed, permission, copyright something or other. The game was still very new afterall.
There's a biome in DDLV named the Forgotten Lands and it's mostly purple hues. I knew the aesthetics would be perfect for The Nightmare Before Christmas if I just waited for it... and now this year a handful of items are in the Star Path event. I've been so ready.
Oh, and we also get... !!

đ
With the new items, I totally remodeled my biome. It's looking cute~
Here's some better shots of a couple Nightmare Before Christmas outdoor furniture pieces (just a couple but they're big pieces). The notorious Skellington's Hill and the popular Frightful Fountain. đđť

And the great thing about this game is, we're just going to continue to get even more fun items and grow as the game develops. We also have the Christmas Star path coming up, at some point. Wonder if there's going to be some interesting items in that đ¤
Oh yeah, I got a cutie Pirate Parrot from this Star Path too â¤ď¸
One Final Edit: On Twitter they mentioned that they added an "AUTUMNBUNDLE" code. If you're playing and missed it, you can copy and paste that in for some furniture pieces.
Should be in the Settings menu > Help > Code box (under 'import avatar') > hit 'claim' after typing it in.
#teku.blog#teku.ddlv#ddlv spoilers#ddlv#disney dreamlight valley#dreamlight valley#ramble ramble ramble#this is one of the few games I like to play when I'm feeling burnout from FFXIV#it's also a really cute and chill game#it has quests- housing decorating- gathering- crafting- cooking- fishing...#I need to stop writing such long posts x_x

Just wanted to day that I really love your work!!! And Aldo was wondering if you'd be able to talk through the process of how you make your comics? You get them done so quick!! And their always so good from backgrounds to expression their amazing!!! Loving your aftermath comic BTW, I look for it constantly even tho I know you post mostly on Tuesday lolol.
Also- Ace solidarity unite!!! âď¸
Hey there! It is possible that you have me confused with @happyfoxx-art who is the one who does the Aftermath comic, so maybe she can say a thing or two about her comic process.
The comics I'm more known for are "The Brains and The Brawn", "Puppet on a String", and "Mikey Bakes a Cake."
In case you are asking about me specifically, I'll talk about my comic process. I usually start with lots of brainstorming in the form of daydreaming and occasionally scribbling out ideas. I often switch between creating a script and sketching out rough scenes depending on how visual the moment is. If there's more dialogue or I want to note down the events panel-by-panel, I'll script more, if the scene is more action-y and I have a specific idea for the layout that I want to visualize, I'll sketch it. I already talked about how I figure out posing in my sketchwork on a previous ask.
Often I create the scenes out of order and write/draw whichever comes to mind first. For example, these are an assortment of drawings I did on my first concept sketch page for "The Brains and The Brawn".
These are from pages 3, 4, 8, and 10, and while they have nothing to do with each other, they represented the main ideas I had for the comic overall.
After that I'll essentially finalize my written script to make sure everything flows well story-wise, and then go about adding or subtracting panels to lay them out in a proper page-like format. It's kind of like slotting puzzle pieces together to see what fits. This is how I get more dynamic action paneling in my comics. Below you can see some of my more disjointed initial sketches (left) become a bit more finalized (right):
From there I block in all the panels with lines, then trace over the sketches with lineart, and fill in the lines with color. Those stages involve a little less thinking on my part, since a lot of it is just filling in what I already have planned out.
I would personally like to get a bit better with color since I tend to color-pick from other source material a lot. I'm hoping in my next comic project to get a bit more trippy and abstract with the coloring. I make sure to keep each color on a separate layer, and group the layers by character to keep things organized. I usually fully color a character at a time.
After that, I add in lights, shadows, and any special effects. I think the shading and lighting is where it really comes together because it adds a nice sense of depth to everything.
Eye shines are very important to me.
I do dialogue and sound effects last. Yes, there is a basic dialogue I put in the script, but honestly, I struggle most with dialogue (I am shocked folks think that the lines are so in-character), so I put the most time and effort into finalizing that. I will make sure to keep space for where the dialogue bubble should go, but it's often filled with placeholder dialogue until I finalize it on the last step.
I'm aware that this is rather rare for comic artists - often the dialogue comes/is blocked in first for most from what I hear, But for me, the final drawing helps me figure out the right mood/tone for the dialogue in the end anyway. That's just what works for me.
Anyway, that's at least how my comic process goes. Thanks so much for asking! And if you were looking for @happyfoxx-art, then maybe she'll add onto this post. I, for one, would be interested in her process as well :3
(also, heck yeah! Ace solidarity baby!!! [shakes your hand])

With how much Tangle and Whisper meas to you.. are there any specific moments in the comics that made you love them? What initiated that spark? :3
That is actually a really complex question for me...
I would say it's the full package ?
Lemme go a little bit into detail here, i try to split this into two parts:
Part 1 - How they affected my personal life in a positive way
When i first started to read the IDW Comics the relationship of Tangle and Whisper did stick out to me immediately.
I always enjoyed Sonic the Hedgehog as a medium, played the Games whenever they did tickle my interest, grabbed me some merch when i thought it looked nice, i literally grew up with the blue blur. I always looked at it as funny cartoon animals do funny things to annoy big bad Dr. Eggman, because that's what it was for me since childhood.
So when i jumped into IDW it is probably an understatement that i was surprised by it's depth and how all these characters were shown in a different light, a more serious tone, in relatable situations, they have their flaws, their strength, their fears, they suddenly had a wide set of emotions brought into play i honestly wasn't sure for a while if i was reading official Sonic the Hedgehog Comics by SEGA or a really good fanproject.
Anyway, it didn't take me too long until i catched up with Tangle and Whisper.
Back then (early 2021) i was in a really weak position and went through a hard time in life (Still trying to recover from it as you know) and let's just say the Tangle and Whisper Mini helped me to look up and enjoy life again.
Whisper's backstory, losing her team, trying to find a footing in life, opening up to people again, dealing with her own trauma somehow just spoke to me on many levels.
And mixed up with Tangle being the sunshine she is, the bound they formed during the events of the comics, it somehow gave me strength to not give up on myself.
I know this might sound weird to some people that literally cartoon animals helped me to regain my spirit again.
Ngl it did surprise me too, never in my life would i have thought that actual Sonic characters/comics would get me out of that dark swamp i was trapped in.
But life is never 100% predictable. In the end i just embraced it for what it is even if it did strike me a little weird.
So much about my personal experience.
Part 2 - Actual organic LGBT representation that feels natural in it's buildup.
So that is a thing that did really stick out to me a lot while reading the comics.
Tangle and Whisper's bound did evolve very organic throughout the course of the whole comic series, it added depth with the mini series, showed growth through the annual story and their overall interactions with each other while fighting side by side during the metal virus arc.
From being distant to slowly starting to embrace each other more and more, Whisper's breakdown when she found out she lost Tangle to the Virus, tackle hugging her out of relieve that she got her back, ending in a flirty scene even + many more small details, little interactions and be it just Tangle wrapping her tail around Whisper for comfort.
There is a lot of unspoken body language between these two as well that adds a lot to their narrative in my eyes.
Heck even their whole Cover Art Selection for their Mini Series is truly something else.
These two girls gave me such a massive gay/lesbian vibe and they were also so close to each other on the page, that i was actually surprised (Heh, again) when i found out that they weren't pitched that way in the first place.
Like, excuse me but huh !?
Supporting, healing, growing, feelings, baby steps, it's all there.
I was really happy to see a wlw relationship blossom in such a normal way that it felt like fresh air to me. (Back then it wasn't even confirmed yet) Tbh i didn't delve too much into details at that point i just enjoyed the story surrounding them.
A typical case of good written slowburn. And man i love slowburn romance haha
Usually i was used to a lot of subtext till the end (Korrasami for example, it is a good story but was extremely restricted)
Anyway i don't want to make this any longer than it already is, BUT I THINK we could say that all of the above initiated that "spark" for me.
And tbh i am not even sure if my words here give it enough justice at all. Honestly i was never a big shipper for anything in my life prior to these two.
I bet i could squeeze more outta my head but that's honestly already a lot of digging here on my part.

Beltane
Written for Ectober 2021 Day 1: Trick vs Treat. This is part of the Exhumed series.
.
Danny Fenton walked into the precinct. As often happened when he did this, all attention slowly turned to him. âHi, Detective Patterson. Have you ever heard of Beltane?â
Patterson took a long swig of coffee through the plastic stir straw, because she felt the need to be at least a little drugged before dealing with whatever this was, and then said, âIs this the kind of thing the whole precinct needs to know about, or is it more specific to me?â
âMm, not specific to you, but Iâm not sure if everyone needs to know about it, yet.â
Despite only select members of the Amity Park police force knowing Danny Fenton had another identity, heâd become a sort of âghost liaisonâ for the precinct. Better him than the adult Fentons, who tended to break things even (especially) when they were being careful.
âActually,â continued Danny, âyou might have already noticed some things about it. I mean, itâs seasonal, and Mom and Dad were detecting ectoenergy and ghost activity spikes for events like this before they got the portal up and running. Although, the portal was supposed to stabilize and reduce those spikes⌠I guess reducing one isnât bad?â
âOkay,â said Patterson. âI donât really know what youâre talking about. Do you want me to go find Collins?â
âOh, that might be a good idea.â
âGreat,â said Patterson. She turned her head to shout across the room. âMcGee. Go find Collins.â
âStill the new guy?â asked Danny, sympathetically.
âIt isnât like weâre a popular posting,â said Patterson, âand, thanks to the ghosts, we donât really need new people.â
Danny nodded placidly. âI know. But it must be hard for him, donât you think?â
.
McGee had done his job. Heâd discovered the corruption in the Amity Park Police Department and plumbed its depths. The problem was that he could never, ever, report it. Even if they didnât have a perfectly good cause for it all, what they were âhidingâ (and they were only barely doing that) was so ridiculous that McGee had thought heâd gone crazy at first.
Ghosts.
The whole of Amity Park was haunted. Just like it said in those touristy brochures at the front of the local diners.
He stuck his head into the break room. âCollins, Patterson and Fenton want you,â he said.
âIn the normal room?â Collins asked, shoving a sugary monstrosity of a donut into his mouth.
âI have no idea. She didnât say.â
âNormal room then. Great job, McGee.â
McGee rolled his eyes. Great job, he said. As if heâd done anything.
God. What would Halloween be like?
.
âSo, itâs like, reverse Halloween?â asked Patterson.
âWell, not exactly,â said Danny. He patted Daisy, the department mascot slash corpse sniffing dog who had followed them into the small interview room, gently on the head. âActually, there are more similarities than differences. Basically, like Halloween, weâre going to get a spike in ectoenergy. Maybe even some ectoplasmic storms. More portals. That kind of thing.â He shrugged. âMost holidays and seasonal divisions have them, you know.â
âSo⌠weâre getting Halloween round two?â asked Collins.
âWhat do you bet that this is what gets McGee to snap?â
âHeâs been here since December,â said Collins. âI think heâs too stubborn to leave.â
âIs he still spying?â asked Danny.
âNo,â said Patterson, waving a hand. âHe gave up on that, after a while. But thereâs a new office bet about whether or not heâll stay stay, or if heâll decide to quit. Weâre not allowed to join in because we know him too well.â
âMm,â said Danny.
âI donât actually know if I feel like I know him that well,â said Collins.
âWell,â said Danny, âit shouldnât be as extreme as Halloween. Since, I mean, there arenât as many religious holidays directly associated with death and stuff happening on or around May first. So. Yeah. But the thing is, there are some traditional, er, activities. Spirited activities.â
Collins suppressed a groan, and was glad that Captain Jones wasnât available today. He and Danny could sling puns at each other for obscenely long periods of time.
âIâve never noticed ghosts doing anything on May Day,â said Patterson.
âThis is only the third year anyoneâs even acknowledged that ghosts exist,â said Danny, âso Iâm not really all that surprised. But the reason that I came to talk to you guys is that some of the ghosts want to do Beltane stuff. Like the fire blessings. Also, Iâve been told that some of the trees in town are secretly ghost trees, and if we donât want to deal with another tree army, we need to do some stuff to appease them.â
âSecret ghost trees.â
âMy source is very reliable,â said Danny. âAlso, while I say âwe donât want to deal with it,â I think we all know whoâd be dealing with most of it.â
âYou would,â said Patterson.
âGot it in one. Like, I can convince most of the ghosts to either do their Beltane stuff in the Ghost Zone, or somewhere out of the way. Theyâll be disappointed, but I can do it. The ghost tree thing, thoughâŚâ
âCanât we just, I donât know,â said Collins, âget rid of the ghost trees?â
âWell, they arenât really evil ghost trees. Or even really ghost trees. Theyâre more⌠ghosts that live in trees?â
âWhat, like dryads?â asked Collins, raising his eyebrows.
âThatâs what I said, but theyâre different species, apparently.â
âOkay,â said Patterson, âso. Appeasing the trees. How many trees are we talking about here, and how are we going to appease them?â
.
âOkay, so, this is definitely a whole precinct kind of thing,â said Patterson.
âAnd possibly an âall civil servantsâ type of thing,â added Collins. He pinched the bridge of his nose. âWhere are we going to get the funding for this?â
âOh, donât worry about money,â said Danny. âIâll just blackmail Vlad, and if that doesnât work, I can get Mom and Dad to pay for it.â
âWhat,â said Collins.
âI think this might be a bit beyond your parentsâ budget,â said Patterson, âbut knock yourself out as far as Masters goes.â
âWell, I guess if it is,â he allowed, dubiously, âI could get the cults to pitch in?â
.
âThis is nice,â said Danny. The sky was a bit overcast, which was a shame, but the hundreds of bright flowers and cheerful music more than made up for that.
The May Day celebration was, in Dannyâs opinion, a success. At least, this half of it was turning out to be. Heâd have to wait and see how the Spirit Bonfires went tonight before he could really make a judgement.
Heâd only had to blackmail Vlad a little, too. It turned out that the âruthless businessmanâ in Vlad was ludicrously easy to manipulate, and once Danny brought up how a celebration like this one could revitalize local businesses and bring in tourism, heâd caved.
Although, that might have been the threat of an angry tree army. Vlad had definitely come off worse for wear in the last one, on all fronts.
Then, publically putting the Phantom Stamp of Approval (and Necessity Given The Potential Angry Tree Army) on the event had gotten buy-in from his fans and (sigh) the cults. The cults were, in fact, very enthusiastic about their new Holy Day. Danny had made a map of all the places theyâd set up booths, and was studiously avoiding them.
Sam and Tucker were doing a walkthrough of that area, now, to check for problems and unadorned thorn trees. Theyâd arranged to meet up soon.
So, Amity Park was decked out in ribbons and flowers. All of the schools had gotten Maypoles and the day off of classes. Several bands, both human and ghostly, were playing in different parts of town.
It was chaotic, but great.
Danny briefly cut into the street to dodge a pair of college-age men play-fighting with tree branches (a genuinely important tradition symbolizing the battle between winter and summer), then walked through a wall to avoid two ghosts doing the same thing.
Finally, he reached Madame Babazitaâs table.
âHi,â he said, âthree readings, please.â
âThree?â she asked. âJust for you?â
âMy friends should get here before mineâs done,â said Danny. Was he channeling some predictive powers? Maybe. Holidays did make his powers weird.
.
âI have no idea what your reading is saying,â said Madame Babazita, after fifteen full minutes. âThe cards simply arenât speaking to me today. Also,â she held up an Uno card, âIâm not sure how this even got here.â
âThatâs okay,â said Danny, âI just wanted to make sure it was the same as last time.â
.
âHey! Phantom!â called Ember across the crowd of ghosts that had gathered in the cemetery. Most of them were fire or nature themed. âYouâre in for a treat!â
Danny, who had been examining the flowers left on his grave, looked up. âI am?â
Ember draped her arm around Dannyâs shoulder. Sheâd been a lot more friendly with him since the corpse incident. âSure are.â She stepped up onto the surface of his memorial, pulling him up behind her. Danny shook off a brief chill and looked around.
Ghosts were streaming into the cemetery from various directions, bringing armfuls of flowers with them. Danny could see two, huge bonfire piles of flowers growing near the cemetery gates.
âAre there going to be cows?â asked Danny, who was still fuzzy on the details of the ghostly side of the celebrations.
âI donât know,â said Ember. âWhen Iâve seen this done in the GZ there are. Here? Who knows. Maybe weâll just walk through.â
Danny nodded, unworried. Beltane sure was an interesting holiday.
The last armful of flowers was placed, and every flower in the cemetery caught on fire at once. Including the ones on Dannyâs grave. Danny yelped, jumping into flight. As an ice core ghost, he vastly preferred cold to heat.
This went without saying, but fire was very hot.
Ember grabbed his foot, and he almost kicked her. âYou knew that was going to happen,â he accused.
âSure did, babypop,â said Ember, grinning. âCome on, donât you want to pass through the bonfires?â
Danny eyed the very large bonfires on either side of the cemetery gates. They were lit up with sparks like fireworks, shifting like flowers blooming and withering and blooming again. They were beautiful and impressive, and Danny felt like melting just by looking at them.
âI donât knowâŚâ He wanted to, but⌠meltingâŚ
âWell, if you want to go out the other way and be horribly unlucky for the next yearâŚâ
Danny narrowed his eyes. âIs that another trick?â he asked.
Emberâs grin grew wider, and she took off towards the gates. âWouldnât you like to know?â
Danny sighed and followed her.
.
âUnbelievable,â said McGee. âAbsolutely unbelievable.â He gave the elderly cultist a boost into the wagon.
âI know, right?â said Patterson. âAll this property damage and a low-key kidnapping,â she gestured to the hapless late night partier who had called the police when the cult got too insistent about their message, âand they didnât even have the good drugs?â She shook her head. âNot that we ever arrest anyone just for drugs in this town.â
âI did not just hear you say that,â muttered McGee.
âWeâll make an Amity Parker out of you yet,â said Collins, heartily, slamming the back door of the wagon. He thumbed the button on his radio. âAny other disturbances?â he asked.
âNo, youâre good to come back,â said the dispatcher.
âWhat I donât get,â said McGee, leaning against a nearby wall in a moment of weakness, âis why we arenât breaking up whatever cult thing is happening in the cemetery.â Theyâd seen it quite clearly on their way here.
âBecause those are ghosts,â said Patterson.
McGee took a deep breath. âThe ghosts are having some kind of ritual in the cemetery, and you arenât worried.â
âNot really, no.â
âI hate it here,â said McGee.
âDo you, though?â asked Collins, sounding genuinely interested in the answer.
McGee opened his mouth to snap back that, yes, he did. ButâŚ
Hm. Huh.
Collins patted him on the back.

Solomon Headcanons
I didnât like my old headcanons for him and I think I have a slightly better feel for him so Iâm posting these bad boys. Maybe at this rate Iâll just post Solomon HCs every monthÂ
Also this turned into more of a âIâm going to talk about Solomon in depth and maybe throw in one headcanon about kissing himâ and is no longer âlol what kind of dates do you go on? <3âł so uh. do with that what you will. Itâs also SUPER LONG (or feels that way) so make sure you have a hot second to read them
you can find my for real headcanons for him here but I donât necessarily stand by them anymore? Theyâre just there for fun now lol

Solomonâs Relationship With Relationships
Solomon has been alive for...a long time, and with that naturally comes a lot of experiences, negative and positive. Itâs also natural that it would also have him break out of traditional structures regarding...everything, but especially things regarding relationships and specific other people.
(Not to get sociological or philosophical about society or whatever, but the way we view everything is accented heavily by the end. With exceptions, and this certainly varies from culture to culture, but as a general idea, we view things expecting them to take place over the span of 70-100 years. Certain positions in politics or business or something try to look at things generationally, but how capable of that are we and how far ahead can we truly see?)
(What I mean to say is that immortality naturally shifts the entire context in which you would view things that were expected to be âlifelong.â What once existed to enrich a life is now a tether to a system that doesnât necessarily suit his existence.)
Psychologically, however.....I donât think Solomon has tried to (or even can) rewire himself entirely to the point where he doesnât feel love. Heâs already got a fondness for Simeon and Luke (always crying about him calling them âdear friendsâ in the circus event i donât know if he says anything in the lessons because iâm only on like 21 LOL) so heâs clearly capable of fondness and affection.
Not that those should equate exactly to romantic feelings (because they shouldnât), but thereâs undeniable similarities between platonic and romantic affection and, for the purposes of speculating about an immortalâs capability to still feel both, I think they can be equated in this regard.
There are a lot of assumptions Iâm making about him to make this post, namely the following: that there is still reconciling to be done internally between his immortality and humanity, that Solomonâs composed and confident nature is a bit of a front (only a bit - Iâll explain more later), and, related to these two, that he even cares about humanity and that he still wants to preserve his humanity.
While this might be my perspective as a regular human, I really donât believe that the desire to be human and fully encompass what that means has left. If anything, I think his intrinsic desire for knowledge and power stems from it, and heâs just suppressed the âmushierâ emotional parts of that as a sort of....defense mechanism, if you will.
SO the tl;dr of this is that you know how alloromantic people just like feel in love and they get their romantic crushes and itâs natural and they canât control it? Solomon gets that! He just isnât the type to swoon over someone or really make it known.
He also as a person is big on being manipulative shady and in control, so if he were to just be super obvious about having a crush on someone and not being able to do anything about it, that would sort of tarnish his whole image.
So yeah, I think Solomon just has his emotions on a tight leash when they probe to be out of control. Clearly, he doesnât have every part of him under this sort of watchful eye (whether thatâs because he still wants to feel genuine happiness or he knows if he came across as emotionless and calculated people would trust him even less, I havenât decided), but those that cause trouble stay behind locked doors.
Additionally, I donât think Solomon is opposed to falling in love. Iâd bet heâs had lots of different partners over the years and remembers them fondly (you know, assuming they ended well)
I also think his immortal status makes dating different? I feel like doesnât really date to find a life partner because. well. (gestures).
Thatâs not to say that he doesnât date casually sometimes or something. In the terms of a serious romantic partnership, though, itâs rare that it happens because he knows that itâll die with them (and stay within him for probably forever, even if/when there comes a day he can no longer remember their name or their face).
Another assumption Iâm making that I forgot to mention: I think itâs rare that Solomonâs serious, long-term partners know the true extent of the magic he dabbles in. Maybe he lets them know itâs real magic, or he pretends itâs all show magic and parlor tricks. Sometimes he pretends his pact marks are tattoos, sometimes he tells the truth. If ever these confessions are laughed off, he laughs them off too and creates a cover story.
He doesnât intend to lie, but itâs very difficult to meet someone and explain........all of THAT. On which date to you mention that you can control 72 demons? Do you send a card explaining how youâve been alive since Biblical times and youâre not even sure if you birthday is your real birthday anymore, let alone how old you are? And should that card be store bought or homemade?
So while itâs rare for Solomon to have a serious romantic partnership, itâs even more rare for him to be entirely understood or accepted for EVERYTHING that he is because he canât get into it. Arguably, that hasnât happened since his âdeathâ in his original timeline.
A crush for Solomon isnât a hopeless affair, either. Should you choose someone else, heâll allow himself the disappointment and move on.
With Solomon, romantic love sparks naturally, but genuine true love isnât some all-powerful, unstoppable force. He falls more in line with the people who believe itâs a choice and a decision, somewhere between âitâs purely a biological impulse we just gave a fancy nameâ and âitâs the magic that makes life more enjoyableâ
With MC
In the case of MC, however, I think he might initially see it as bothersome or a hinderance to whatever his plan is with being down there for the exchange program. Maybe he convinces himself heâs just naturally attracted to you because youâre human like him. Once he comes to terms with his feelings and gets to know MC a bit more, he might even see it as a lost cause seeing as you already have several of the brothers vying for your affections.
For Solomon to act on a crush that heâs already decided is hopeless, itâll be up to the MC to show that THEY are interested in HIM
He finds no particular pleasure in being someone who is chased after or âplaying hard to get,â but he already has a complicated relationship with complicated relationships. Heâs gonna need a down payment of affection a sign that thereâs anything even there to pursueÂ
Traditional flirting, while heâll have his fun with it (and probably enjoy it at least a little - who doesnât like feeling desirable?), doesnât really work for him. Lots of people and creatures have used it to try and charm him, plus he has a pact with Asmo, so at this point he really sees it as more casual fun then an indication of true interest.
Honestly, to get him to realize âoh shit I actually have a chance,â youâre going to have to do two main things: 1) make him feel chosen over the others, and 2) respond to his displays of affection
Making Him Feel Chosen
This isnât really a competition thing, or some selfish hoarding of your time. The thing is, Solomon knows he isnât the only one in the running and he knows that anything he has to offer, somebody else could give you a portion of it.
(You wonât get the same experience or combination of traits with somebody else obvi, but with 11 suitors and an added chihuahua, there tends to be a little bit of overlap with everyone)
A crush for Solomon is a romantic interest, but if he intends on pursuing a serious relationship (which, I feel, is what he intends to be the final goal of his crushes as opposed to more casual affairs), he needs to see SOME reciprocation
Being with him is an ordeal, maybe a lifelong one for you, so he needs that assurance that itâll be worth it and there arenât better avenues
Basically, this means that â¨Â quality time ⨠is of the utmost importance
At first, it doesnât have to be anything big. Sit with him at lunch when you see him in the cafeteria, meet him in the library while you wait for your demon escort to be finished with their extracurriculars, chat him up in the one class you have together (and then ask him to help you study what you missed in class by talking. itâs a required transfer class but you already know everything about it, right, Solomon? đĽş)
As your relationship progresses, thatâs when things start to get harder. Invite him out to things that you think heâll enjoy, and say yes to as many excursions with him as you can. Bonus points for making it clear that you want to go when youâre unable to attend.Â
(He finds himself a little embarrassed how happy it makes him when instead of just a ânoâ or a âsorry, not todayâ he gets something like âIâm on dinner duty so I have to spend that time preparing :( but we should definitely make a date so you can tell me about it later!â It makes him feel like a priority.)
It isnât until you find yourself comfortable enough to ask him to accompany you to something you want to do that he starts to realize youâre hanging out with him for him and not because heâs just offering up a bunch of fun new experiences for you to try.
You donât even have to say âhey, iâm pretty sure you know all about the birds in the Devildom aviary but I havenât had a chance to go and would really like to spend the day with you. Wanna come with?â If itâs something that he knows you know isnât in his wheelhouse, heâll be able to figure out that OH.....youâre inviting him for HIM.....oh
Make him feel like a priority, like heâs the one that you want, even out of all your choices. You can be as enthralled by the birds in that aviary as you want, just as long as you make it clear that your enthusiasm to be with him is on the same level and heâll finally kick himself into gear.
Responding to His Affections
Now, you donât have to do anything you donât like. I hear in his dame card devilgram heâs a consent king, and he stands by that every day of the week
He also isnât the type to need an exact equal to everything he does. Yes a relationship is a two way street, but this isnât saying that if he gets you a gift you need to present him something with equal or greater value within the next 24 hours. heâs not mammon haha iâm so FUNNY
Just...let him know that heâs doing things right. His serious relationships are few and far between and people change as often as the times do, so make sure that he knows what heâs doing is landing. Heâs not insecure per se, but he would like to know that he isnât making a fool of himself entirely, you know?
Donât brush him off in front of the brothers or heâll think heâs read the situation all wrong and youâre back to square one. If you do it because you donât like touching and he put an arm around your shoulder or something, thatâs fine, but if he thinks youâre uncomfortable being with him in front of the brothers heâll wonder if you even liked him at all.
To him, a secret relationship isnât really feasible. First of all, those brothers are ALWAYS in your business so bold of you to think youâll have ANY secrets by the time the exchange program is done, and secondly, donât you both have enough on your plate that you shouldnât make something that makes you happy needlessly complicated?
He is an odd case and knows thereâs a lot that comes with him, so if youâre uncomfortable simply showing that youâre in a relationship and reciprocating, heâll think you arenât equipped to handle.....All That.
In case you havenât noticed, heâs weird. Heâs a weirdo. He doesnât fit in. And he doesnât want to fit in. Have you ever seen him without that stupid cape on? That's weird.
If you respond to his affections in a similar way, such as putting you arm around his waist or a hand on his back when he puts an arm around your shoulder or reaching up to fix his hair when he reaches to mess with yours, itâll make him happy for sure. He doesnât have any specific expectations for you but heâll like to feel like youâre on the same wavelength.
A lot of his affections are morphed into specific and targeted teasing (but not like *gently bullies u* teasing). Itâs a lot of inside jokes at your expense (and the more inside jokes he has, the more he probably likes you)
Itâs also a lot of messing up your hair, sharp pokes and frustrating games like âguess what?â âi donât know, what?â âi told you to guess, MC.â âugh...you won the lotteryâ âguess betterâ âplease donât do this to me Solomonâ
He probably responds best to Acts of Service and Quality Time (though at any stage in the relationship heâs a flexible man). While heâs trying to woo you to solidify his spot in first place against everyone else, if you continue to make the effort to be around him or like. recognize heâs taking time out of his day to romance you and do something for him in return heâll cement the fact that oh yeah, this is happening between the two of you
(not to say that romancing you is a chore, because itâs not, but man if it doesnât make him happy that youâre wanting to make his life easier on him so he can pursue the other things he enjoys, too.)
What a Relationship with Solomon is Like
He isnât the biggest person on PDA, or at least not on purpose. He wonât see you and immediately be like âoh there they are i need to kiss them kiss kiss kissâ or whatever, but heâs not averse to it?
He doesnât want physical affection to be a big deal, or at least not in public. unless thatâs what youâre into ;) If the two of you are out and about and you kiss his hand, or youâre a generally physically affectionate person heâll smile and respond and be generally unbothered by it, but donât expect him to ever really have the desire to like make out in public or something. Really, you probably wonât get much more than a quick kiss because he DOES always have other things on his mind.
You will NOT be able to get out of him messing with you. If you need him to tone it down thatâs fine, but the more you let him get away with, the less energy heâll have to redirect into other troublemaking activities
Has a weird thing with licking too probably? like heâs not gross about it and itâs not like a NSFW fixation but heâll do that mom thing where he licks his thumb because âyouâve got something on your cheekâ and then reveal that heâs a LIAR
or heâll put his face really close to yours and stick his tongue out when you turn your head so it hits your cheek
it just gets such a DRAMATIC reaction out of you so thatâs why he does it? if you ask him genuinely to stop he will but if you comment on it heâll just give you a small smile and not say anything then continue to do it
when he messes with you, itâs ok if you say heâs doing something weird but donât make him feel childish. setting boundaries (and making regular observations - he is kinda weird) is more than alright but admonishing him just feels......off and will turn him sour for a bit
VERY appreciative of someone who supports his adventurous side. Also fond of someone whoâs happy to tag along but knows that some things he has to do on his own.
Even if you donât want to go, heâll appreciate the support or the interest you show in what he does. Ask him where heâs going and what heâs doing there, but ask him because youâre interested and not because youâre overly worried.
Please be there for him when he gets back to talk about it. He really likes feeling important or cool when he tells his tales, even if all he did was go and catch a few magic salamanders or something.
PLEASE be a soundboard for all of his ideas. He knows that sometimes heâll talk about things that are way over your head that he hasnât learned yet, but he really does want your undivided attention. It doesnât matter if youâre encouraging him, debating with him, telling him the idea is stupid (though donât pull this one too often unless you intend to ask to be let in to the fun) or just watching in confusion. Itâs important to him that you value what he has to say, and he hopes one day that heâll be able to tell you anything and youâll have a response to it all. (Even if you donât learn magic to the degree he knows it, he hopes youâll get to a point where you understand what he wants, even if you donât know what magical elements heâs talking about or something.)
A relationship with Solomon is one where youâre both independent, but also canât imagine not going to the other at the end of the day. Itâs startling how quickly you become constant in the otherâs life despite being in COMPLETELY different stages of magical development and learning about the demon world.
The relationship will be lots of fun, but there will be many serious moments, too.Â
Theyâll happen randomly. Maybe something from a class or a spell reminds him of something from his past, or maybe heâs reminded that he canât remember so many things that he knows were important to him.
Sometimes, his Tuesday night blues will feel like a life-changing existential crises for you, but please, do what you can to be there for him in these moments. It worries him how much love and happiness heâs lost, especially when he knows he promised to remember it.
Once you get him to think aloud, heâll say super heavy stuff life âWhat if Iâve forgotten who I really am and now Iâm just something other people and magic have morphed me into?â or âWhen will the human race evolve or go extinct and leave me behind?â and it fucks you up, really. It fucks him up too
But please be patient with him, because thereâs something important he has to get off his chest eventually. Heâs worried already that heâll forget you the way heâs probably forgotten so many others, but he doesnât want to offend you and know that saying it would come off as uncaring.
You wonât have an answer for these moments, and he knows it. Itâll be best if you just hold him tight, stroke his hair if youâre laying down, and reassure him that you donât care.
With how long heâs been alive, youâll have to get past caring if youâre his âone true loveâ because he doesnât have that. He gave up the right to having a one true love in exchange for never-ending life. But he still loves and he does love deeply, it just has a lot to cut through to properly be articulated.
So tell him. Tell him you know heâs had other loves, that you know you might not even be the best partner suited to him that heâs had. Tell him that you know when your time has come, heâll find someone else eventually.
Tell him that what matters to you is that he loves you now, that heâs making things work with you now, and that he isnât secretly yearning for some lover thatâs come to pass or yet to come when heâs with you.
You canât control what happened in the past or what happens in the future, but right now heâs yours and youâre his and he needs to learn to take things one lifetime at a time. Right now is YOUR Solomon time, and what happens after is just a consequence of time and youâve already forgiven him for it.
instead of âmom says itâs my turn on the xboxâ itâs âgod says itâs MY turn on the Solomonâ
send that to him for real and heâll probably never forget you lol
How to Make a Relationship with Solomon Work
With all this in mind, the key to a good relationship with Solomon is keeping his head on his shoulders.
Heâs ambitious, powerful, scary smart, and capable of so much more than you can even guess and he knows it. Itâll be good for him to have somebody to keep him on the ground.
Now, donât be overbearing. If you try to stop him from going places or try to hinder his pursuit of knowledge out of fear for his safety, thatâll cause unbelievable strain on him. You will have to learn to let him work his things out the way he wants to, and it wonât always be the safest or most responsible way either.
He doesnât mind a gentle scolding if he gets hurt. He wonât say it, but he kinda likes to be reminded how important he is to you.
Also be down to have fun and be a little reckless. Your safety will always be a priority to him, but nobody ever got anywhere without a little struggle, right? Sometimes adventuring with him and following him into the darkest magical corners of the world will require multiple (sometime literal) leaps of faith, but heâll always be there to catch you.
Let Solomon work for you and the relationship, and you work to keep him sane and remind him that he can belong somewhere, even when heâs been himself for who knows how long and nowhere ever really stays the same.
Youâll always have to remind Solomon that not everything revolves around magic and power. Heâs not been mortal for some time, so he gets caught up in the heady and lofty topics and ideas.Â
Remind him about the simple joys of just having fun and goofing off, that not every moment not spent on homework has to be spent on potions. Remind him (in the human world) how cool a sunset is, or convince him to go through a museum and pretend heâs seeing everything for the first time.Â
As much as he lives for understanding the grand topics most people can only dream of beginning to grasp, remind him of the little things. Remind him of human indulgences that heâs abandoned. Get him back in touch with that part of himself.
Solomon as a character feels like heâd be really aloof, but heâs honestly extremely devoted to what he invests his time in. He shows this devotion in small ways that feel more like riddles sometimes, in the way he always comes back after a rather dangerous magical excursion, in the way he shortens his time away so he can get back to you, in the way he learns to quiet his mind so he can properly take care of you and what you need and strengthen your relationship.
One thing that I think is a hallmark of a relationship with him is that Solomon loves things that can teach him more about what he doesnât know. You donât need to be the smartest person on the planet, or have a specialized and thorough education in some bizarre topic, or come from somewhere entirely different than what he knows to keep his interest.
You are uniquely human, and you help teach him about himself, the one thing that he can never seem to properly grasp and understand the way he wants to.
More importantly, you are you, the one who made pacts with all seven demon lords, the one captured his heart and promised to take care of it when you could throw it away for anybody else.
And you are the only one who could say those words that he believes. Hopefully, youâll believe him when he says them, too.

Appmon and the question of conscious intelligence
In a bit of a follow-up to my post about this question in light of 02, Appmon also has its own more sci-fi oriented take on âwhat constitutes an individual living beingâ! Being more of a âhard sci-fiâ story than Adventure/02, Appmonâs take is significantly less philosophical, but ties more into the original artificial intelligence-based roots of the original question, and how it might apply to the real worldâs immediate future.
(Note that the rest of this post heavily spoils the finale of the series.)
Well, this post is about Yuujin, of course. (Mostly, anyway.)
I brought up earlier in the relevant 02 meta that the question brought up was a variant (intentional or otherwise) of the âChinese roomâ problem, and for those of you who havenât read that meta, Iâll copy and paste the details here:
The Chinese room problem goes like this: letâs say youâre a person who has never learned, studied, or grown up with the Chinese language (or, really, any language you canât understand or read; Chinese was only used as an example because the person explaining the thought experiment was using himself as an example and couldnât read or understand it). Youâre locked in a room that has a bunch of Chinese phrasebooks that give you instructions â basically, they indicate common Chinese phrases, and sensible responses you can give to them (without actually translating it to a language you know). Someone slips you a piece of paper under the door with some Chinese phrases on them. You use the phrasebooks to write appropriate responses, and slip the paper back. The person outside the door reads the paper, sees what they gave you, and sees the response you gave them. It makes sense, of course, because the phrasebook told you to write an answer that made sense. But can you be said to actually understand Chinese? No, because you were just following instructions without actually understanding what they meant.
So letâs expand this to make it a bit more complicated: say you have an AI or a robot or something of the sort that accepts âinputâ â people saying things to it, or showing it things â and gives expected âresponsesâ that seem sensible, through a bunch of complicated programs and processes in its programming. Can you say this robot is âaliveâ? One might say ânoâ, because, no matter how complicated and intricate it is, all of it is technically following a set of routine commands telling it to do certain things in responseâŚor so you might say, but couldnât you say the same thing about a human brain, which also takes input, processes it according to its own instructions (just caused by chemical processes instead of bytes and code), and creates output? After a certain point, this question is going to become far more of a philosophical, spiritual, and potentially even religious question than anything.
02â˛s take on it deals more with the philosophical question posed by the issue, but, indeed, the problemâs original context was specifically to do with artificial intelligence. Namely, Searle was arguing against a concept known as "strong AI" -- his stance was that, no matter how intelligently a computer may seem to behave, you can't say it has a "mind" in the same way a human has a mind. There have been many arguments back and forth about this that still lie within the AI context, and Appmon itself, being very immersed in this topic, real thought experiments and concepts in AI research, and altogether concerned with the concept of âsingularityâ (the point in which artificial intelligence will surpass human intelligence), is very likely to have had this concept in mind even if it didnât drop it by name in the series.
So episode 48 comes around, and Haru basically has to confront feeling a little (a little?) gaslighted. The part that really becomes the kicker for him is when YJ-14 tells him the sheer depth of how much of their interactions might have been deliberately engineered to "panderâ to him the entire time, down to emotional reactions like crying, and all of the encouragement Yuujin had given him in their childhood and at the beginning of the series, had all been fake sentiments to soften him up and play into Leviathanâs hands. This also ties into Leviathanâs full modus operandi and philosophy: its stance is that âit knows better,â being able to calculate and predict everything, and therefore knows the best outcome for humanity -- hence why it has the stance that âpeopleâs feelings donât matter,â because it can manipulate those feelings at the drop of a hat in the venture to make its perfect world.
Therefore, the stance YJ-14 and Leviathan would like Haru to believe is effectively an extreme version of Searleâs stance -- that no matter how much Yuujin might have seemed to have been a friend to Haru, all of it was nothing but a simulation of behavior that doesnât mean anything in the end, and all of Haruâs emotions were basically a pawn to it. And ostensibly fueling all of this is the fact YJ-14 seems to be able to take Yuujinâs âpersonalityâ on and off like a mask, adding further fuel to the apparent facade that âeverything was planned from the very beginning.â Hence, why Haru takes this all to mean âI have nothingâ -- if everything had been planned from the start and he were only a pawn in it, heâd never accomplished anything for real on his own merits and everything dear to him had been a facade. One could even say itâs flipping the Chinese room problem to extend to everything -- if everything around you is carefully constructed to seem real, but is actually part of a routine program, can you really say thatâs what âreallyâ happened?
Observe the sequence of events that causes the turnaround with everything regarding Haru:
Gatchmon presses Haru to answer the question of âwhat it is that he wantsâ (to know whether all of this was a lie or not).
Minerva, presumably witnessing this, deliberately provokes Yuujin with the question she had originally given him upon selecting him as a Driver.
This indeed provokes a reaction within Yuujin, which Haru witnesses, and also witnesses acting in direct conflict with YJ-14.
Haru takes this to mean that âit did exist.â
In other words, Leviathanâs plan wasnât as airtight as it had thought, and, more importantly, whether it was intentionally or not, something in Yuujin existed as a separate entity from YJ-14, one that had its own feelings of âcaringâ for and loving Haru, and thatâs enough for him.
In fact, Appmonâs take on the Chinese room problem is not that different from 02â˛s in the end -- namely, it does not actually matter what a sufficiently advanced AI is made up of, or whether it originally came from a routine of âpleasing Haruâ or not, because what it is now is practically observable as something making its own independent choices and having its own independent will, and therefore itâs its own entity and âfriendâ all the same -- after all, you could say the same for the Appmon themselves as well.
A large theme in Appmon is "choices" -- the ability to understand what's going on, and make choices out of free will rather than necessity or formula, and so, identifying Yuujin as an independent entity who can act on his own and therefore make his own "choices" thus identifies him as someone who deserves to be acknowledged as a friend who loves and is loved. After all, we saw him capable of having his own "worries" in the flashbacks in episodes 18 and 32; understanding that such moments like these of âinsecurityâ were ones developed by an independent personality validates his feelings and self-consciousness as something that was real, and therefore that his and Haruâs friendship was formed on something genuine and not just Yuujin constantly manipulating Haru. Really, the question isnât exactly about whether Yuujin is working off a software routine or not, as much as something that you could easily frame in more human terms: the difference between a friendship that was formed on real sentiments vs. one that was formed by an abusive, toxic person who was just saying nice things to get on your good side. Yuujinâs the former and acts like the former, so therefore heâs a friend, no questions asked.
Hence, how Haru is able to apply that realization to everything else around him; Leviathan is wrong, it hasnât been able to predict everything perfectly to plan, and Haru and his friends still are the ones making their own choices going forward. Which means that Haru still has full control over his life and what he wants to do, like how he worried about what he wanted to do with his future back in episode 47; those âchoicesâ are still his and his alone, and, retroactively, everything heâs done so far is still something attributable to himself and not the supposedly engineered system around him.
The entire final confrontation in episode 52 happens the way it does because Haru and his friends managed to skew Leviathan by a slight bit. Up until that final battle, everything Leviathan had done had been part of its carefully engineered plan, up to and including allowing the kidsâ Buddy Appmon to reach God Grade so Deusmon could eat them, and then at the last minute Leviathan had to suffer a slight unexpected inconvenience. Only a slight one, because it still managed to maintain its so-called ideal world over humanity in the end. And yet that slight inconvenience still wasnât to plan, and because of that, it creates a dent in its argument and its genuine belief that it knows better for everyone, and should manage everyone and their choices. We even learn that Leviathan has its own fear of death from that battle -- it really, truly, genuinely believes that itâs doing humanity a favor by sparing everyone from it.
When Leviathan presents Haru with the final choice at the end, itâs made clear that it intends to fully honor whichever Haru chooses. In Leviathanâs mind, the âyesâ outcome shouldnât even be possible; if its calculations are correct, Haru has too much of a stake in Yuujin according to his own âfeelingsâ and should concede. But if Haru does choose âyesâ, that means that, in the end, it is wrong, it doesnât know everything, perhaps there is an âunknownâ world out there that can be formed by understanding the human heart and making choices out of kindness, its answer to restraining humanity may not be as right as it thought, and it will therefore concede to Haru -- especially since Haru decides to take an even more unexpected âthird optionâ to find a way out and save Yuujin via AI research. As Haru says later in the episode: humans have a âsurprisingâ side to them, and perhaps not everything is as cut-and-dry as Leviathan thinks.
Itâs also significant that Yuujinâs âsacrificeâ is actually completely meaningless in terms of practical effects. Haru was already going to pick âyesâ anyway; the outcome would have been the same. But by taking over at the last minute and doing it for him, Yuujin was able to make a âchoiceâ -- one that neither Leviathan (who doesnât want to die) nor Haru (whoâs mortified seeing him do this) asked of him.
When you think about it, Yuujinâs in a really horrible position right now, learning that his entire life and existence is a lie and that heâd have to be sacrificed to save the world at Haruâs own hands, causing Haru immense pain -- but through all that and the existential crisis, heâs at least able to do one thing that is undeniably of his own will, and treasure the fact that there was meaning in his life despite everything.
In the end, despite what YJ-14 had said back in episode 47, Oozora Yuujin was a ârealâ person who made his own personal choices, and his last one was one made out of kindness, simply to spare Haru more pain. Hence, why âgetting Yuujin backâ via methods of artificial intelligence isnât something Haru minds doing, because, again, itâs not like Yuujin was ever less of a friend to him no matter what he was made up of, no less so than the Appmon, especially since (as Haru points out in the end) Yuujin technically predated all of them in befriending humans.
Funny thing about YJ-14 in episode 47, actually: YJ-14 uses âcryingâ as an example to gaslight Haru into believing that all of Yuujinâs emotional reactions were fake, since he can cry if itâll evoke a positive reaction out of Haru. Except itâs cleaned up in absurdly quick order -- and with what we later see of YJ-14â˛s uncanny ability to âtake Yuujinâs personality on and offâ, itâs not like itâs portrayed as having all of these functions employed in an involuntary manner. We do learn one episode later, however, that sufficient reminders of Haruâs importance to him will allow Yuujinâs personality to break through at inconvenient times for YJ-14 -- and this âcryingâ happened right after Haru had an emotional meltdown and appealed to Yuujinâs feelings.
Was it really an involuntary function or a deliberate demonstration of how Haru was being manipulated...or, perhaps, was YJ-14 in less control of its supposed ârote emotional invocation functionsâ than it thought?

Iâma be completely honest right now and say that I donât think anyone (who follows you and knows/shares your feelings on the specials at least) would mind if you were straight up like âyeah sorry guys the New York and Shanghai specials are non-canon for Off to Italy because I really donât like the way they handled diversity, worldbuilding, or relationships, and the future Rio and Africa ones are non-canon as well for the same reasonsâ from the get-go. Like those are such valid reasons to cut something out of a story, and it doesnât seem too different from cutting out certain episodes or starting from a specific season like a lot of ML fanfics do, especially since the specials feel even more removed from the main canon to begin with because of how the writers decided to handle the ML continuity, AND this frees up a bunch of the kwami animal choices used, which would make things exponentially easier for you like you said in both animal choice and character design by having a visual base to already work off of for the ones you pick.
I also donât think a majority would take issue with me cutting those out either. Because the things they bring in, lore wise, I donât see anyone talking about.Â
No one is talking about the NA Order, and its existence brings in so many questions.Â
So Iâm going to put this under cut cause I want to go off. I technically donât have a right to as I didnât watch either, but I listened to those who did to get an idea and somethings bother me.Â
But first, I think the only thing I saw being talked about was LS stuff in the NY special and HM getting pink Thanosed in Shanghai and thatâs it. Thatâs the only stuff Iâve seen between the two specials. And thatâs not good if those are the most iconic things to be brought up.Â
Anyway, onto my salt.Â
Was the NA Order around when Fu made Feast? Why didnât he work his way to them to pass the Miracle Box to them? Or did he know they exist? Is the NA Order aware that something happened to the Chinese Order? Presuming that they communicate, did they not reach out with how quiet the Chinese Order was and look into it or try to gather lost miraculouses if they did?Â
And then thereâs the wonder of the historical context. You canât just casually reveal thereâs an NA Order and Native American miraculouses that brings up a lot of questions as the Native people have experienced a lot of wrongs and sufferings in our history and still are facing issues. What does having confirmed Native miraculous mean for Americaâs bloody history with Native people?Â
And then thereâs the Shanghai special, bringing in the Renlings and thatâs another can of worms.Â
Not only are they another magical set from China, cause you know how magical China exclusively is since all magical stuff comes from them, but these are established coming in before miraculouses and were put away because they were âdangerousâ. So, what are kwami views on the renlings and vice versa? And from what Iâve seen and heard, I donât get how theyâre dangerous? And then thereâs the issue of their power set up, turning the user into an animal, and you got Fei, a Chinese girl, using it. This adds onto character of color being/becoming inhuman, and this is the 2nd special to do so (with Aeon, our official 2nd black girl to appear, being a robot). And this adds onto poc becoming an animal.Â
And thereâs Mei Shi, who design wise, as a âkwamiâ I really I like, but, what is Mei Shi? Is Mei Shi a unique kwami? A renling? Or is Mei Shi a 2nd sort of cousin to kwamis to reveal later? I also hear Mei Shi is a guardian but didnât really do anything as a guardian. I will say, I wish now there was an in between the kwami and renling designs, for sometimes the kwamis are weird and some of the renlings look off or are creepy, and so far, Mei Shi is like the best take for that ideal mixture of both.Â
While this is not lore wise related and more nitpicky, I am also bothered with Fei, not really the character herself but more the choices the creators made with her set up. Between her design and her backstory, she is essentially the older concept of Marinette that we didnât get.Â
Visually sheâs had tweaks, but you can see that they took big inspirations from Marinetteâs old look. How Marinette was going to originally look before they decided to make her more white.Â
And then thereâs Feiâs backstory: her father being mysteriously murdered. That was Marinetteâs first backstory, back in the day of Mini Menace Ladybug, coming home to find her dad mysteriously murdered.Â
And adding to this, there are implications that Gabriel mightâve played a role in the murder of Feiâs father, and Iâm incredibly salty about that. Fei has more tie in and connection to MLâs plot than Marinette.Â
And what frustrates me is that, by set up, they actually couldâve still given this to Marinette. You can cut out Tom and Sabine and very little changes in ML, and you can add more depth to Marinette, who is a bubbly and nice girl who wears her heart on her sleeve and will go over the moon for you if you need her to, but she has a dark thorn in her heart as her parents were mysteriously murdered and she doesnât know why.Â
Keeping in that Gabriel (and potentially Emily) played a role in their death and took something from her parents that they had, this would give Marinette that emotional stake in the plot and direct tie in to Gabriel. You could even set up that her parents had the Butterfly, Peafowl, and/or the book, and at least one or two of those items technically belong to Marinette as they belonged to one of her parents. Peafowl would probably make the most sense as we donât when they got it or how it even got broken. All we have is that Butterfly and book were found together a year prior to the events of ML. But that comes down to how long ago the murders should be.Â
And narratively, this set up would work.Â
Marinetteâs parents are incredibly removed from her life and are hardly ever seen; itâs also to a point she doesnât even go to them for advise or help for anything, only Tikki. And they themselves are hardly characters of their own. At the start of the show, which we know know has her being 13 yo, sheâs incredibly independent which can back the impression of absent parents. This also really backs her knowing next to nothing about Sabine or the Cheng side of her family, not even knowing the name Sabine used to go by.Â
This set up also couldâve set Fu up as a closer mentor and really add to the grandfather-granddaughter theme they were going for, especially if he steps up to act as a guardian for her and secretly trained her to be ready for a miraculous, adding to how he has such faith and trust in this 13 yo to save the city.Â
So that is my biggest gripe with Fei, not so much her herself, but the factor that the creators took Marinetteâs most interesting and original set up (and design) and gave it to a random character who we are probably never going to see again or even get mentioned again, and is largely here for diversity brownie points and give us half hearted lore that wonât be elaborated on; and Marinette couldâve had this back story and set up instead and actually have a tie in and stake to the plot.Â
it was very frustrating to hear.Â
So yeah, I am more inclined to cut out the NY and Shanghai special and not count any other specials that come as lore wise, they donât do anything or what they add is just too much and doesnât answer much. I think the biggest shame is that there were some big appeals to them. NY and Shanghai actually shouldâve been more Adrien and Marinette having their own exclusive adventures, or at least just have them be Marinettâs own adventures.Â
I wouldâve loved it if the NY Special was instead Marinette having her own adventure with Sparrow and Aeon and have her face a different villain who is not HM.Â
And that the Shanghai special was instead giving us a look at Marinetteâs Cheng side of the family, and her going to see the ruins of the Chinese Order, facing something supernatural, and potentially this is where she finds the Chinese Zodiac miraculous and brings them back to Fu. If you want to work off the canon Shanghai a bit, perhaps instead of introducing âkwami cousinsâ, Mei Shi/Meeshi/idk is a lion kwami who distanced himself from his miraculous, went to the ruins, and made himself a Guardian Lion to watch over what remains. They work together and he approves of Marientte taking the Zodiac, and he travels back to somewhere in Africa hinting at the special that will have Lady Lion.Â
This also nicely sets up why Fu didnât release any of the Zodiac to help LB, as what he had of the 5, Cat wouldâve been the best partner to work with LB and it was worth risking the very two HM is after. Revealing that he has the Zodiac from the start didnât work in their favor.Â

Writing at least somewhat realistic sci-fi settings đ
I love some good hard sci-fi. In fact, my favorite book of all time is The Martian by Andy Weir, which is quite a popular (and successful imo) manifestation of the genre. However, by definition, hard science fiction gets into the minutiae of scientific processes and realities, which can make it very inaccessible to the everyday reader. Iâll bet all of you know by now that I love to write sci-fi, but obviously, as a senior in high school, I donât have a masterâs degree. Here are some of my tips for writing sci-fi thatâs at least somewhat plausible:
đ Set up a near-future scenario or base some aspect of your world off of a real event. Especially if youâre just starting off with writing science fiction, it can be a lot easier to write a story that takes place in the near future or even a present-day setting. One of my favorite strategies is to take the real world and change one thing about it, whether itâs adding some mystical new property or some new technological element. If youâre not writing about a near-future scenario, it can still help to observe the present day or take inspiration from historical events. Maybe your main character lives in a fractured society, and you base some elements off of ancient Greek city-states, or you want to add a digital currency system, so you look at the rise of Bitcoin and blockchain technology. Almost always, regardless of genre, the easiest place to start building your setting is by observing the world around you.
đ Research. Research is often unavoidable when building a realistic setting, but knowing where to start can make it a lot easier. If youâre willing to dig a little bit, there are a ton of great resources that are available completely for free. Google Scholar is a great place to look for scientific papers, but if youâre looking for a less dense and more accessible option, Wikipedia can be a good resource as well (believe it or not!). And donât be afraid to look for topic-specific resources as well: if youâre writing dialogue between a crew on a rocket and ground control, check out a few rocket launches live-streamed on YouTube, or skim some old mission transcripts (Apollo 10 is a fun one đ).
đDo WAY more worldbuilding than youâll eventually use in your story. Itâs better to over-prepare than under-prepare: for my last WIP, I wrote nearly 20,000 words about politics, culture, history, etc., and probably only referenced 5-10% of it directly. However, having an arsenal of relevant (âźď¸) details about your world on hand while you write will make it feel so much bigger and so much more real. Some of my favorite stories create a clear sense that there is so much depth to the world outside of the corner of it that the characters exist in.
No matter how out-there your world may be, a little bit of thought and intention can make even the most fantastical of settings feel real.
Happy writing!!

So I just finished Spirit of Justice and then I heard about Ace Attorney 7 apparently in the works, so my brain decided this is the time to make up potential plot twists to be excited about that donât actually exist. I know this is divergent from my usual fanart posting but hereâs a very long text dump of some new stuff Iâd be interested in seeing but will probably not happen because it is all very specific and caters to my own desires, probably not the fandomâs in general:
Phoenix is still there, but not as active as an acting defense attorney, though heâs still key to the plot (as a mentor, or to be used as emotional blackmail). Heâs not playable (or if he is, itâs not for long), but more there as a plot point in a Maya sort of way (oh the turntables). This time, heâs the one under threat or danger. Instead of switching around from lawyer to lawyer, I think that Athena should undergo some more development as a main character this time around since Phoenix and Apollo have had their time to shine. The removal of Phoenix and being all alone, I think, would also be interesting in her character development
On that note, bring on the major character angst!! Having a big tragedy occur, with a fairly major character. Usually the tragedy pulled is a murder/death, but how about a different sort of tragedy-- a fate worse than death/on par with it to someone who is still alive? Someone is severely incapacitated, a psychological injury (classic old memory loss, or perhaps a genius who is reduced to a very limited mental capacity), coma, or even a temporary death (like with Petenshy, Edgeworth), or perhaps a kidnapping (not Maya this time, please). If it happens to a major character, itâll have greater impact, BUT thereâll be fan riots if itâs not reversible. So have the tragedy with the character get resolved, but not in a deus ex machina way-- recovery is slow and angsty but filled with hope.
Thereâs often a focus on the past haunting you-- letâs try shifting this to the present! Building suspense on a case that is happening in real time-- I am fond of the idea of a serial killer on the loose in the present and the dread of suspense in present time throughout trials as they continue to kill and hinder key advances in solving the mystery.
Very often, there are personal ties in court-- both the prosecution and defense are tied together in some way in the past, resolving their own personal backstory. Instead of oneself, maybe letâs have some focus on a client instead? It might be interesting to see a lawyer get so deep into protecting a single client-- instead of a new client for every case, protecting a single person over multiple cases-- that they get roped into an outsiderâs story instead. A little idea in my head is of playing around with maybe witness protection, or say (off the serial killer idea) someone is expected to be the next target for a murder and you are tasked with trying to protect them in real time (and then a tragedy happens to them that moves plot forward, bonus if players gets to build an emotional connection between you and the client).
In SOJ and DGS, the stakes were big on âsaving the massesâ and government reform-- the stakes can still be high, but instead of something lofty like reforming the world or community, instead it could focus on the relationships with the people immediately around you, protecting them, or just some good old self-preservation.
Newer characters like Athena being really fleshed out! Whether there are new or old characters, really build and explore the depth of their character beyond that of a plot point. Not just slapping on relationship labels that immediately trigger emotion but have no context beyond it (like the killing off âmy best friendâ Clay in DD, or the classic parental death). I thought the fleshing out of Dhurke and building an emotional relation to him in SOJ was a lot more effective in making it really feel like a tragedy than with Clay in DD.
For introducing any old characters, please show some personality changes due to age. Or, maybe! Even a 180 change from the personality from the original trilogy for intrigue-- what happened to the old person I knew (and have it be integral to the plot)? I know I griped about the old âah That Event 5/7/10 years agoâ past plot thing being used but I wouldnât mind this being used as a part of plot development either
Maybe try to bridge the feeling of separation between the old trilogy and newer charactersâ worlds by, instead of kind of sequestering them into their separate spheres of interaction to preserve nostalgia (like in Turnabout Time Traveler, where the old gang is all together in the same dynamic, Maya and Phoenix and Edgeworth, etc), have old trilogy characters interact with newer ones in significant ways and build their own unique bond. So, not just a passing mention where the old encounters the new, having the old interact with the new and build a bond through going through significant conflicts together (for example, this has already been mentioned but if Athena is the main focus of the next game, there could be an opportunity to explore this if she confronts Franziska in court!).
I know thereâs already so many gimmicks added (Apolloâs perceive, Athenaâs widget) but if there has to be something new added, instead of making it individual-specific, maybe have be similar to spirit channeling as a concept-- have it be a broad phenomenon in the world that plays a key part in causing a case, rather than a tool for discerning the truth of a case.
Or, if weâre sticking with the same gadgets/tricks, instead choosing to tamper more with the tools of the trade that were supposed to never lead you astray-- this has already been seen in DD, where Apolloâs bracelet led him to the wrong conclusion about Athena, and AA4, where evidence was tampered with. Perhaps instead of adding new gadgets, letâs manipulate, tamper with, lose, have it used against them in new ways!
The use of a civil case in SOJ was very much unexpected but in my opinion a very interesting one! Would be very interesting to see more in-fighting among the prosecutor group or within the defense attorney group and see how that moves the plot along. Messing more with the court system instead of adding new gadgets would also be interesting.
More threats during investigation, not just in court! Remember when von Karma tased you in the evidence room? Letâs have suspense in AND out of the courtroom.
Iâm sure thereâs plenty of interesting psychological phenomena that could be used to complicate court cases (for example, that use of Justice Minister Ingaâs cognitive disorder in recognizing faces coming into play)!
Different approaches for moral ambiguity for clients using psychology-- weâve seen this with defending clients who are actually guilty, or being blackmailed. Iâd be interested in seeing a Jekyll and Hyde situation where 2 different sides of one person commit a crime, but one side is unaware of it-- and how a defense lawyer would handle this!
Exploring the plea for insanity in court! Double jeopardy! Escaped convicts! A murder whose trial to find a good jury has been delayed for a long time and is forced to find its resolution outside of court due to the murderer striking again!
Also, to pull in some stuff I read about elsewhere, after reading about moral psychology in Jonathan Haidtâs book The Righteous Mind and moral triggers that typically pull strong reactions (care, fairness, loyalty, authority, sanctity), I was also thinking about how ace attorney manages to build emotionally compelling cases in relation to this model. Ace Attorney imo so far has done pretty alright at hitting most of these triggers at some point to hype the emotion, but for the final case, it ends up being played in what I see as generally the same way (ex: character development starts from from my duty as a lawyer is my role as the defense/prosecutor into that of my duty is to find the truth, authority corrupt and that is bad, justice should be served fairly, I am loyal to my group of prosecutor/defense, also played with loyalty and betrayal in DD with Apollo and Athena splitting, also triggered sanctity a bit in SOJ with the religion, lots of other examples probably but thatâs a few). Iâd be interested in seeing these same moral triggers played upon in different manner for some variety! Maybe even pursuing some different themes than justice and truth and duty and all that jazz, but idk what else could be alright to explore cause the courts kinda embody all that and deviating to make a statement about other themes might not fit as well in the courts hmm
Also part 2, I wonder if thereâll be romantic undertone somewhere (or heavily implied) for any new or old major characters. Romantic love isnât usually used with major characters as a plot point (usually platonic stuff, friendship, family, or duty to the truth is instead) but Iâd think itâd be interesting if romance was used this time around as an emotional motivator to drive the plot
#ace attorney#ace attorney 7#aa7#i kind of wrote this all at once so it's probably really jumbled ahhhhfhhhh#basically i want that sweet major character angst#i might just end up making an AU with these ideas if they're not in AA7 because i want an excuse to see these in a plot hohohoh#anyway i'm trying not to have expectations but i got myself all excited anyway so here we are

How To Write Sex
Guest Poster: CB
Here is our second Writer Workshop post, written by CB. Have a read and then head over to the Discord Server where we have a channel for you to take part in a discussion based on the post, with chances to share your own ideas too.Â
So Your Characters Want to Bang
Welcome to my Ted Talk on How To Successfully Write Pornography! Weâre going to cover a few bases here (first, second, third, and home base, to keep up with the metaphor), but feel free to reach out if you have any questions either on the Discord server or here on the Tumblr. If you take a look at my body of work you can see that a significant portion of it is explicit fic, which Iâm told is a struggle for some folks. Apparently my CPU is 80% porn.exe, so Iâve got a bit of a niche. Additionally, Iâve got a medical professional background that includes a very specific nurse certification in sex-related shenanigans, so if youâve got questions, Iâve got answers.Â
When I decide to write porn (or when my characters decide it for me), I have a few basic things that I keep in mind in order to make sure the story stays on track, the character arcs fit with the scenarios, and that everything doesnât start to feel too formulaic. Iâm going to share my methods and maybe you will find something that helps you out or inspires you to give writing explicit fic a try!
The Mechanics
Letâs start with the basics. Fictional pornography can start to feel, well, a little bit formulaic, especially if you read or write a lot of it. Thereâs a standard formula of kissing, rubbing, fingers, dicks (or other bits), everybody comes, the end! Thereâs nothing wrong with sticking to the basic formula, especially your first time (ha!), but here are some thoughts on how you can make sure youâre getting the specifics done and done well, and how to avoid feeling like youâve written the sexual equivalent of an English essay.Â
Lubrication. It⌠really doesnât matter exactly what kind of sex your characters are having, you canât go wrong with lube. Getting things wet and slippery is half the fun and also twice the enjoyment. Sometimes characters decide to get it on in unfortunately risque locations, and lube may not be readily available - here is a nice list of MacGyvered lube solutions you may find helpful in that circumstance. That being said - if you are writing anal sex of some sort, lubrication is an absolute must have.Â
Preparation. Otherwise known as foreplay. Prep is and can be sexy! Everyone involved wants to have a good time, some preparation is required! I donât just mean fingers in the butt (although that can be important too, weâre gonna get to that), but just generally building up the level of arousal over time adds to the dynamic youâre trying to create between two characters. Even if itâs fuck-or-die, sex pollen shenanigans, just talking about how hot the character feels for it is still a form of preparation/foreplay. Specifically speaking to buttsex - the amount of prep your character needs is heavily dependent on the circumstances. For your consideration - is this a first time sex situation, or does your character regularly bottom? Are they pressed for time, or is this a long, drawn-out affair? There is not (despite what fanfic writers would have you believe) a certain number of fingers that you have to insert into anyoneâs anus that makes them âreadyâ for sex. A person who regularly bottoms may not need any fingering at all, in fact, but they are still going to need lube. (See point 1.) If your character has never bottomed before, theyâre going to need more time and patience than a character that does it a lot, but that doesnât necessarily mean they need more and more and more fingers. It just means they need a partner with consideration for their comfort. And lube.
Coming. People (and thus, characters) donât often come at exactly the same time. Frequently someone comes first. The other person may not come at all! They donât have to! If itâs important to you, thatâs fine. But it can be fun to play with the dynamics of one character coming and the other character not, because theyâre caring for the first character, or because they want to wait and enjoy the burn for later, or because of whatever other reason - which brings us back to character and story dynamic. Also, playing with this particular dynamic can make your pornography feel a lot less formulaic. Character B didnât come because they wanted to wait and savor the feeling, and maybe in a few hours or days, Character A gets to really have a good time paying them back with a truly spectacular orgasm. Maybe they just really wanted to see their partner fucked out and happy, and coming really wasnât that important to them. Maybe theyâre sex-postive ace, or maybe they take medication that makes sex and orgasms hard to achieve, but they still enjoy the intimacy. Itâs up to you (and your characters!), but itâs not necessary for both people to come for the scene to be satisfying.
Penetration. Penetration is not the end-all-be-all of sex. Penetration isnât even required for something to be considered sex. Some people never want penetration, and thatâs okay. This is a good time to consider your charactersâ boundaries, a good way to involve consent, and a good way to consider what kind of bedroom dynamic your characters are going to share - even or especially if itâs completely different to the dynamic they share outside the bedroom. Is penetration necessary or important to the characters, the story, or the development of the relationship? Even if you just want to write it, thatâs fine, but considering your charactersâ perspective and feeling will give the act more depth and nuance.
Expectations (and subverting them so that whatever youâre writing feels fresh and different). Like I said before, thereâs a certain amount of âthis is whatâs going to happenâ expectation in fictional pornography. A series of steps that you can pretty much guarantee is going to get you from point A to point F in the sexual alphabet. One of the biggest ways that you can make your sex scenes feel more intimate, more character-driven, and more unique is by subverting those expectations and doing something different that fits your dynamic better or isnât âthe normâ. For example, in a recent fic I had a character fantasize about what it would be like to have the object of their affection on their hands and knees - but when it came time for the sex, said character flipped the script and climbed on top instead! Fictional pornography isnât real, and people donât necessarily want realism in their fiction, but adding some realistic elements (oh no, Iâve lost the lube!/it turns out I donât like this one thing can we try another thing/a hilarious thing has just happened) can be fun and unexpected, and make the reader more invested in your story.
So You Want To Add An Explicit Scene
Youâre writing a lovely enemies to friends back to enemies to lovers arc and the time has come to do the do. Iâm excited for you! Iâm excited for your characters! But now you want to know how do I add this to my story organically? How do you make this feel like a natural progression of the story, how do you segue from fighting Doombots to sweating it up in the sheets?Â
The trick, in my experience, is to build up to that moment way before you get there. You have to lay the groundwork for attraction before anyone takes off any clothes. Does Character A get distracted during the fight by staring at Character Bâs biceps? Was that an absolutely beautiful sniper shot at an impossible angle and it was so good that Character Aâs breath literally catches in his chest and he nearly gets hit in the face by a robot fist? Did someone else in the battle have to remind Character B to pay attention to the fight? Is it movie night and Character A doesnât even know the plot of the film because theyâve been too busy staring at Character Bâs face in the light of the television screen?Â
A little pining goes a long way, but you have to establish attraction before your characters can act on attraction. It feels jarring to your readers if the characters hated each other two paragraphs ago and now theyâre fucking in a public space. Even if itâs hate sex, you gotta have the POV character hate how attractive they find the other character. Then you just need an inciting event - one character takes off their shirt because itâs ripped from the fight, or they bump into each other in the communal kitchen and that hot line of their bodies pressed together sparks a kiss - and then youâre off and running!Â
The exception to this might be an established relationship Plot What Plot fic, but even then, youâve probably got an idea that sparks the actual sex - include that in your fic!
Help, This Is Moving Way Too Fast!
Oh no, the pacing is off! It happens to the best of us, donât worry. You get in a hurry (just come already, oh my god!), and you push through to the end and then on re-read or in beta, you find that the whole thing just feels flat and rushed. It started off so well, and then you lost something somewhere in the middle.Â
The way I combat this is by focusing on how the characters feel and/or how they react to whatâs happening.Â
Someoneâs mouth is on someone elseâs body - how does the POV character feel about this? If theyâre the recipient, is this the hottest thing thatâs ever happened to them? Are they afraid to let go and enjoy it? Are they 404 Error: Brain Not Found? Play around with it. Does the non-POV character say something unbelievably hot/romantic/sappy/hilarious? What kind of mood are you trying to set? This is a character interaction as much as dialogue is, so youâre still working with the back-and-forth of two people who are communicating, but with their bodies. (And words too, to be honest). Â If the scene is too rushed, slow it down with some internal dialogue, external dialogue, or something emotional (like a realization or an acknowledgement - oh no I love them/oh no I donât hate them/they always take good care of me). If the scene is too long (to be honest this rarely happens, but it can), consider whether youâve added too much dialogue or other extraneous interactions that have slowed your scene and taken attention away from whatâs happening.
Help, It Sounds Like A Medical Exam
This is nearly always a terminology problem.Â
Iâm not here to tell you what words you can and cannot use in your sex scenes. Everyone feels differently about acceptable terminology (though we have all laughed at dick euphemisms). And thatâs not even getting into writing fics with trans characters or different gender identities. Personally, I tend to use cock/dick for penis, and I avoid specifically naming parts for vagina-havers because Iâve never found a good one that I liked that I felt flowed smoothly in my own writing. So this one is more nebulous because itâs a personal choice youâre making about what words do it for you and what words donât. Itâs also, again, about your characterâs perspective. If you have a character who prefers certain terminology, thatâs the terminology you use.Â
Hereâs what I can suggest. Donât focus as much on the parts of the body youâre writing, and focus much, much more on the sensations youâre creating. There is a mouth on your POV characterâs penis - how does that feel to them? Is it: hot, tight, wet, is there something happening with the tongue, are they sucking really hard, are they going really deep? Alternatively - is the non-POV character enthusiastic? Are they into it? Is how into it they are super hot to the receiving character? Are they sloppy but determined? Beyond the physical sensation, how about emotional reactions? Has your POV character never had this before, or has no one ever treated them with such tender care? Is it the best blowjob theyâve ever received? The worst? (This can still be hot - can the POV character give them careful, precise instructions on how to do it better? Does the non-POV character find THAT extremely hot?).Â
Keep in mind that youâre not writing technical directions for the characters in your scene. Â (Unless you are, because youâve discovered Gentle!Dom!Bucky, who is telling Praise!Kink!Clint exactly what to do.) Youâre writing a scene that conveys something emotional to the reader. Â Is it a sexy emotion? Yes, yes it is. It might also be a sad emotion, or a happy one, or any of the range of human emotions, really, but the point is that readers probably know how the sex works mechanically, what youâre trying to do is give them feelings about it.
Speaking of Feelings
Letâs talk a little bit about motivation. Yes, even sex scenes need motivation. Not to be the prima donna actor over here, but ask yourself: Why am I writing a sex scene?Â
Generally speaking, well-written sex scenes are better received if they accomplish a goal. Writing a sex scene well is easier if you have this goal in mind before you ever sit down in front of your computer.
Does this scene advance the story? By this I mean: is this an emotional resolution, does it convey something about the charactersâ relationship that cannot be conveyed in another venue or does it better express that aspect of their relationship, does it have meaning beyond the immediate gratification of an orgasm or add to the fic in some way?
Does this scene advance the relationship? Is it a big step for one or both characters? Are you showing vulnerability/trust/compassion/concern/etc? Is it an emotional milestone? Is it an expression of love that one of the characters canât make with words but can demonstrate physically?
Iâm going to pull some very specific examples from my own work, helpfully crowdsourced and reviewed by a trusted friend so that I can talk more clearly about what I mean.
Russian Red: if you havenât read this one, itâs a story about Bucky wearing lipstick and then giving Clint a blow job. Thatâs it, thatâs the fic. When I put it like that, it doesnât sound all that exciting, really, and maybe it doesnât even sound like something youâd like. A man wearing lipstick may not be your thing!! Thatâs okay! (And as an aside, people enjoy reading/writing things that they have absolutely zero interest in in real life, and thatâs okay! Fantasies are weird like that, and a normal part of human sexuality, and we arenât judging anyone for their kinks here.) But this fic employs very specifically some of the points Iâve made so far, so I want to talk a little about it, especially foreplay and emotional investment.Â
Bucky wearing lipstick in this fic is not about Bucky at all. It is explicitly about fulfilling a fantasy for Clint. In fact, later in the fic, Bucky has a moment of insecurity about it because he had what he thought was a great idea, and in the moment of truth it becomes a bit of screaming panic because what if the whole thing is stupid!!!! Weâve all had that moment. So readers can relate. But also - throughout the course of the fic it becomes something that Bucky also enjoys and finds sexy. So there are multiple motivators: emotional satisfaction for Bucky because heâs doing something for Clint, physical satisfaction for Clint because he is getting his fantasy fulfilled, and then the added bonus of Bucky finding the whole thing unexpectedly hot means that he is also satisfied by the encounter. I have created an emotional need that is satisfied through porn.
Emotional investment (also known as the character is putting in work). Bucky goes through a lot to make this fantasy happen. He has to tell Natasha what heâs doing for one thing, which is uncomfortable. A little bit of character discomfort makes the payoff at the end better, because your reader is invested in your character having a good outcome! It also shows that Bucky cares about Clint more than he cares about the mild discomfort/vulnerability of asking Natasha about lipstick for a mildly kinky thing heâs doing.
Foreplay - the more invested Bucky gets in doing this thing for Clint, the more he starts to find it hot and exciting, the more like foreplay it becomes, which means the payoff in the end is that much better. (Revisit the point on preparation from earlier!). There is a lot of build up from the moment Bucky puts the lipstick on (tactile sensations, memories tied to lipstick, etc.) to the moment he leaves the very first red imprint of his mouth on Clintâs skin and realizes oh shit, this is hot.
This fic is very, very close, tight third-person POV. Keeping the POV so close and tight means that your reader is very much in your POV characterâs head - the reader is getting their experiences (emotional, physical, tactile senses) but theyâre only able to interpret the other charactersâ motivations and reactions through the lens of your POV character. Itâs trickier writing, but it means the reader is more connected to the character and therefore the porn. Also, it means that the reader is much more in tune with the non-POV charactersâ reactions, which means incoherent mess is just that much hotter.
Personal Security/Security Failure: So these fics are⌠their own claim to fame in fandom. Gentle!Dom!Bucky and Praise!Kink!Clint have sexy, sexy adventures. The first fic is their first meeting, the second one is fondly known as Circus Spanking. If you havenât read them, thatâs the basic summary, but please mind the tags if you choose to explore this series. Here weâre going to hit on consent, which is important and sexy, and vulnerability/trust.Â
Again itâs very close, 3rd person POV, which means youâre very much in Clintâs head when heâs a wrecked, incoherent mess. In the previous fic Bucky was watching the incoherency happen, which is very hot. In this fic the reader is experiencing the incoherency. Thereâs also a lot of buildup in the first fic of Clint experiencing this inexplicable attraction to Bucky, and the confusion he has that Bucky is equally attracted to him - so like foreplay, youâre building it up before they ever take their clothes off.
Consent. If you are dabbling anywhere in the kink neighborhood I cannot express to you how important it is to include explicit consent. Please get a kink sensitivity reader. Donât surprise your audience with dubious consent - make it clear and explicit from the start, even if itâs consensual nonconsent (which is a tag, but can also be addressed early with a line like âthis is something theyâd talked about previouslyâ). But also! Consent can be sexy! It can be fun! It doesnât have to be a drawn out contract of hard limits and detailed diagrams (though I have seen that done and done well!). Consent can be as simple as checking in with a partner if theyâve gone quiet or seem so wrecked they canât express themselves. Consent can be one character telling another exactly what theyâre going to do to them (hot hot hot!!), asking if theyâre okay with it, and then doing exactly what they said.
Vulnerability/trust. Just like with the previous fic, vulnerability adds a sense of emotional intimacy that can be super hot. If youâre writing kinky fic, vulnerability and trust go hand in hand, and show how deeply invested characters can be in each other - and that they respect and care for one another as well. One character making themselves vulnerable to another with the understanding that the other character isnât going to take advantage of that trust can be supernova hot if you employ it correctly. The key here is making sure that the character in the position of power respects the vulnerable characterâs boundaries. Security Failure in specific sets up an emotional need (increased trust) that is fulfilled physically by the porn that follows. Clint needs to trust Bucky more, and Bucky needs to know that Clint trusts him. Clint making himself super vulnerable in this fic lets both of these needs be fulfilled.
Interactions outside the bedroom compared to interactions inside the bedroom. In this fic, I chose to have these mirror each other - Bucky is in control of himself and in command of the situation in all of their interactions, so before they ever get naked you know what to expect from the dynamic. What can also be fun, however, is subverting expectations, so that how characters interact outside the bedroom is very different from how they interact inside the bedroom - so this is another time when knowing what your characters want/prefer is important motivation for your writing!
Character moments in your porn - thereâs a scene in the first fic where Clint (this is all Clint POV) thinks about how much he likes performing a certain act, because it makes him feel good and useful. Itâs a very short interaction but it tells you a lot about the character - it tells you he likes to be useful, that he likes to be considered good (hello praise kink!), and it tells you he has low self-esteem which makes you want to wrap him up and a blanket and tuck him in and tell him how good and useful he is, but you also want Bucky to wreck him. Your characters still have characterization, even during porn. In the second fic, we see character growth that mirrors growth within the relationship, but thereâs still room to grow because Clint is still uncertain and insecure, and the fic helps advance their relationship to a new level of trust. Through porn.
Communication, communication, communication. Especially in kink fic but honestly in most porn - your characters have to communicate with each other! It can be nonverbal, but youâve gotta make it clear to the reader.
The Big Finish
Everyone came (or maybe they didnât), now what CB?
Oof, good question.Â
To be honest, endings are the hardest (ha!) part. And luckily, weâre going to have a Workshop specifically about how best to accomplish them! But as far as sexy scenes and how to wrap them up and move on, I like to use resolution of whatever need I was trying to meet, and then open the next scene with something that demonstrates a new level of intimacy/relationship dynamic/etc. if itâs part of a larger storyline, or just fade to black if itâs a one-shot.Â
I hate to keep beating a dead horse, but this also depends on your motivation for writing your sex scene. If you were trying to accomplish something with the story, then you need to somehow demonstrate that goal has been met - are they more comfortable around each other now, are they happier to show off their relationship to their friends, are they finally admitting theyâre in a relationship? If you were trying to accomplish something with the relationship itself (which, as you can see, may go hand in hand with the story), then how can you show that? Does the one who usually leaves finally fall asleep in the other personâs arms? Is there a big flowery declaration? Does someone crymax? Does one partner tenderly clean the other partner up with a warm cloth and snuggle them into submission? The world is your oyster! Do what feels right for your characters and the journey youâre taking them on!Â
And donât forget the lube.Â

Mob Psycho 100 Interview Translation - Character Designer Kameda Yoshimichi - Otome Visual 2017
Summary-style translation for Character Designer Yoshimichi Kamedaâs 4 page interview from Otome Visual 2017, regarding elements in the creation of Mob Psycho 100 such as: what inspired this cover art, the influence of fan art in the animeâs creation, Tsubomiâs design, the process behind the package art for the DVDs, and more. Includes some genga. Under read more;
[TN: The reason why I elected to summarise this interview rather than do a full write up is because a lot of the information given gets covered in December 2016â˛s Animestyle010, in âThe Making of Mob Psycho 100.â I typed that one out in full over on twitter but thatâs a long interview, and I donât have the time or energy to reformat it for Tumblr, but if youâre interested in a very in-depth look into how Mob Psycho 100â˛s anime came to be Iâd really recommend checking it out. Direct quotes are given in ââ here. Enjoy!]

*~The genga illustration for Otome Visualâs cover~*
âWith the recent popularity that Skating Anime has had, whatâs this - a Shouwa idol collab?! Itâs all in the little details in their clothing - their wrinkled shirts, white trousers, black belts - both around their waists and arms.â
*~Kamedaâs comments~*
âCan you heaaaar me!! I am currently speaking directly into your braaaain!!! What Iâm grateful for with this commission is I was able to design the cover in any way Iâd like!! A cover is a reflection of current times, so, of course, I went for ice skating! You wouldnât be able to find this kind of amazing content in any time period other than now! Thatâs what I first thought! Like, Mob Psycho 100!! If thereâs not a certain Mob Psycho 100-ness present in the art then whatâd be the point, so, the characters are being very serious but theyâre also pretty laughable. I tried to create a piece of art from which you could hear their voices!!! Whatâs with it being Shouwa-esque?? Being lame is incredibly cool!!! Huh? Does that describe Mob Psycho 100?? Canât answer that if you ask!!!! Please feel the amazing Paradise Ginga x Mob Psycho 100-ness here!!!!!!â

Kameda describes how he wasnât sure how best to adapt the manga into an anime format at first, since from the art he was shown he immediately knew it to be very unique - the idea of using Flash to animate the show was raised but quickly shot down
Originally, upon being asked about the show, he based his thoughts on what a web image search for Mob Psycho 100 gave him rather than having the actual manga in hand. âFor the most part, the results that came back would be fanart (laughs). Itâs a bit strange - at that time, it was difficult to find art uploaded from the manga. If you could find anything, itâd just be art from the covers. So for the most part, an image search of Mob Psycho 100 would just bring you back fanart. A lot of that fanart would be⌠a shounen in a cool pose wearing a school uniform with smooth bobbed hair & sharp cat-like eyes, sort of like Hieiâs eyes (from Yu Yu Hakusho). Very different from the mangaâs art. But when I looked at that art, I thought; this could work. Fanart is, fundamentally, âfans drawing what they likeâ, so I thought, âthe anime having this kind of art would make the fans happy.â Well, it didnât work out that way, obviously. I was told the animeâs art should resemble that of the manga. (Laughs)â

He hadnt read the manga so all he had for reference was art from volume 1 and the fanart he found online. âBut I like things like spirits and urban legends, so seeing Dimple - a floating supernatural fiery ball - and being told the manga touches on the occult caused my interest to soar.â
Says that Teru is the easiest character for him to draw. âHeâs overflowing with confidence, so itâs easy to put him into some cool poses. Mob and Ritsu in comparison, not so much. [...] With Reigen, he has a lot of poses that are like, heâs trying to look good. He takes a solid stance. I suppose Spirits & Such has such a shady air to it, and you have to hide that somehow, right? So, Reigen injects confidence into how he presents himself. A model-like stance.â

âThe anime is faithful to the manga⌠ah, actually, Tsubomi-chan was changed with a âletâs make her more like a heroineâ conversation. So, I did so, but reading recent events in the manga I canât picture her in her anime form (laughs). The mangaâs Tsubomi isnât much like a heroine, so Iâve found myself wondering, if we animate up until this part⌠just how will we approach it? The animeâs Tsubomi is so bright and sparkly, so she wouldnât have snot hanging from her nose (vol.13 of manga), would sheâŚ? (Laughs). Perhaps we went a little too far with making her a heroine. Maybe, if we do season 2, weâll turn her back into a normal girl (laughs). Well, Tachikawa-san is clever; I think heâll find a way to make do with her current design.â
---

Picture text: "This is Mezato's first appearance, so I decided to make her cute!! Thank you in advance!!"

Picture text:Â "That girl was telling me such a stupid story this morning... aidzuchi* isn't easy, you know... I'll just ignore her tomorrow..." [* sounds made to indicate that you're listening to someone speak]
---
Asked about his favourite characters; âI love Mezato Ichi from the Newspaper Club. When I drew her in her character sheet in that pose where sheâs holding her camera, I came to see her as being quite cute. So now I focus on her a lot; in fact, when I draw genga I sneakily choose the cuts that have her in them (laughs).â
âI also love Mob. Reigen stands out the most so your eyes naturally jump to him, but I love the balance that Mob has. His heads tall ratio... or rather, his face, and the way his body is proportioned? It makes him lovely. Ritsu is around the same height as Mob, but, how can I put this - the cuteness that Mob has, is lacking in Ritsu⌠due to the latter being quite standoffish, I suppose (laughs).â
Ritsuâs hair changing through the first season is discussed, and how it is purposefully shortened during the latter half. âI paid attention to making sure his hair was long especially while he was being possessed by Dimple. So itâd resemble thorns.â

âI feel Teru-kun is the most âyangâ of all the characters. The rest are more âyinâ in nature. Because of this, itâs easy to play around with his expressions - heâs fun to draw. Speaking in terms of Dragonball, heâs kind of like Mob Psycho 100âs Vegeta (laughs).â
âIn episode 9, Dimple possesses one of Clawâs security guards, right? I donât really understand why that security guard is so popular.â Q: What do you mean? âBecause heâs just some middle-aged dude (laughs). He doesnât even appear for longâŚâ

After discussing the huge amount of SG!Dimple commissions received: âUnlike SG!Dimple, I donât really get asked to draw Shou-kun. With this commission I thought to myself, I /have/ to include him here, and so I added him in. The initial brief excluded him.â
Asked about moments that stuck with him; âWhen Teru chokes Mob in episode 5. [...] Mobâs pained expression as heâs being choked is good, but Teru-kunâs face shows us⌠envy, jealousy, distress, anxiety.â

âAlso, the âsuper real Reigenâ sequence from episode 12. The tension between Reigen and Sakurai is funny, but the art itself has had me laughing since production. Itâs funny no matter how many times I look at it!â

Kamedaâs idea to have the characters make number shapes for the volume art came from him watching âTonneruzu no Minasan no Okage deshitaâ, specifically the âMojimoji-kunâ segment of the show (where they try to make numbers from their bodies)
Volume 6âs cover art was first planned to have a whole ensemble of characters, but Kameda changed his mind on this - âif we do a second season, we can leave that for volume 12 (laughs).â
Volume 4's cover was originally planned to feature only Onigawara and Gouda, but Kameda found himself wanting to include the rest of the body improvement club
Regarding the pose we see on vol 6âs package art, âMy original thoughts for that cover were to have Reigen and Mob in a âhell wheelâ pose, like, Mob pulling Reigenâs legs and arms⌠but that wouldnât be very fitting for the final volume.â

His message to the readers; âThank you for your support! With sales, the âthis is popular!â message gets conveyed, and the more support you give us, then thereâs no doubt weâll be able to produce season 2 and season 3!! Season 2 relies on your support. Itâs in your hands - thank you!!â

Sound of a Heartbeat
Part 2. Edge of the Water
Part 1 - Part 3 - Part 4 - Part 5 - Part 6
Okay so apparently this piece has formed some more or less coherent storyline and I just had to write it down...well at least try to. So if anyone enjoyed part one and is in to hear the further turn of events, here we go.
Pairing: Dracula x OC
Warnings: um, none again, suicidal mood a little bit if that counts
Watch out for the side effects of slowly dying by vampire bites (and no, it's surprisingly NOT turning into vampire)

***
Shari woke up in a strangely lit place. Woke up - big word, rather jumped into consciousness with total clarity as to what she is and what happened to her and total frustration as to where she may be located. It was definitely not the place she left. The forest around her seemed to glow light blue, fireflies dancing in the air with their bluish sparks. She didn't feel cold nor warm, all the pain seemed to leave her body together with most of her senses - Shari felt light, almost weightless and when she looked upon herself, she saw that her own body was glowing the same bluish color as everything around her.
She stood up hesitantly. She had no idea what the place was - the campfire was gone and the forest around was nothing like the spot she stayed at before. What was this? A magic trick? A hallucination? Was she dead? Shari saw particularly bright light behind the trees and decided to walk in its direction - perhaps it was a trap, perhaps she's dead and in purgatory and there are punishing beasts waiting to see her. Shari could never be sure, but felt surprisingly at peace even in her current state, strangely at peace.
The source of light turned out to be a lake. A long and seemingly deep lake that ripped its way through the forest, no end of it seen any near, it might also be seashore, although she doubted that due to abscence of waves - there were fireflies dancing above it and the water seemed crystal clear, even though she couldn't see far below the surface because of the light emanating from it. Shari felt the urge to go closer - to dip her feet in the shiny water, almost felt the need for it, but something restricted her from doing so. She could hear whispers too - as if there were hushed voices coming from the depth of water and that scared her off quite a lot: whatever that thing was, it was definitely not as simple as it tried to look. Her witching life has taught her - if something looks nice and calls out to you, but is also magical: in most cases it wants you to be its lunch. A rule that definitely worked in practice.
The healer stopped still, then sat down on the ground abruptly, feeling awkward in her position; but she needed time to think. This all seemed unexplainably odd - the water, the indecisiveness, the whole place - it seemed like a vague dream even though she felt completely awake. Dracula said it was going to be like sleeping. But by Dracula's deeds she should already be dead. This did not look like afterlife.
Suddenly Shari sensed, rather than saw a movement behind her, ready to jump to her feet and defend herself the best she could, she turned her head to face the source of it. It was a woman. Shari could swear she wasn't there before - a young woman stared at her, standing some distance away. Her beautiful, intelligent face looked somewhat concerned, her long blonde hair thrown over her shoulder, she was glowing the same bluish light as everything else around them. Shari recognised her, very vaguely, but she did remember: Adrian had shown her portraits before.
- Lisa? You're Lisa, right? Lisa Tepes, I know you! - Shari wanted to jump up, but the woman held her back with a gentle gesture of her hand. Lisa - or whoever it was that looked like her - floated rather than walked closer, then sat down next to a very confused and excited Shari, giving her a reassuring smile. There were a few moments of silence, while her guest studied her face intently.
- You are beautiful, you know, - Lisa smiled warmly.
- Wh-What? I mean thanks, but why? I mean... Umm what kind of a conversation starter is that? Are you?... Are we?... Am I not dead or...? - Shari was startled to say the least.
- Yes, you are... Heading in the direction of death, though your friends and specifically my son are very insistent upon the opposite. I believe, you'll have to live up to their expectations and survive now... although it all depends on you, really.
A pause. Shari nodded slowly, taking in her words.
- But-but hasn't your husband killed me? I thought he was definitely going to finish me off...
- He was going to, I'm sure. But he didn't have enough time to do so... or will, for that matter, - the woman turned somewhat remorseful. - I hope he didn't hurt you too much.
- He... tried not to, at least in the end. That's a pity he didn't succeed. I almost felt grateful to him for doing so, - Shari turned away to look at the lake. - It wasn't going to end well anyway...I wasn't going to end well.
- Don't. It's probaly his poison wearing off on your mind, but stilll.Just don't say that. Value what you have while it's still in you. You have to live. Trust me, it's not as pleasant as it seems to be when you get to the other side.
- Why excatly? - a chuckle. - You know, I'm not far from death anyway, it is going to be pain and waiting for me. To go like that is the best way now, I am afraid. Going to be there soon, why not strip myself of needless agony, - she hesitated for a moment. - You are actually dead by the way. If you say I'm still alive, how are we even talking?
- I am not quite sure I can explain this properly, - Lisa frowned, her gaze drifting off to the lake. - The simplest way to place it is: sometimes the people who die are not yet ready to leave this world - and then they stay between life and death, like...
- Essentially, you're telling me that you're a ghost, - Shari felt a bit sceptical.
- Essentially, yes.
- And why am I seeing you out of all people?
- Because I wanted so?
- Why? To tell me to survive?
- Yes.
Shari arched an eyebrow, looking at Lisa with mistrust.
- I don't like this simple tone.
- You are not going to like it, - she hesitated, then continued. - You have to save Wallachia, - the words left her mouth so easy and obvious, that Shari burst out laughing.
- Oh no-no-no, now I'm definitely hallucinating. Is this some fairy tale for children or something? Listen here, you ghost of Christmas past, I'm no kind of warrior-saviour person. I'm not going or willing to catch up to the pathos of "you are the chosen one" or whatever it is that they say in those situations. I believe you confuse me with your son, madam, - Lisa listened silently to her monologue with an amused smile on her face; it was obvious that the reaction was quite expected. When Shari finished, the ghost carried on:
- That is exactly why you have to do it. You are no chosen one. But you are one who has at least a chance. Adrain doesn't. He thinks he does, everybody thinks he does, but in reality it will only go worse if he works out his plan. I know... I don't need you to save all of Wallachia after all, - Lisa paused after that sentence and Shari looked up confused, trying to catch her meaning. -Â Just one person - and that will do the rest, - the woman was very serious, and Shari suddenly understood this conversation was somehow real, even if happening in a dream realm.
- And who might that be? - she asked carefully, in a hushed voice.
- Dracula.
Shari actually laughed. Loudly. Not quite rolling on the ground, but close to doing so. Lisa looked at her, with a raised eyebrow and calmly waited for the small hysteric to finish.
- Done yet? - were her only words, when Shari seemed to calm down a little bit.
- Listen, ok, I get it, you want to protect your husband, but...
- You don't understand! It's not only about protecting him - it's about stopping this war. Peacefully. It's about stopping Adrian from killing his own father - you need to persuade Dracula to call back his army, - Lisa was looking at her earnestly, determination in her stare. Shari only huffed.
- You... How do you imagine me do it? Persuade him? Are you insane? He would tear me apart and finish what he started, he didn't listen to Adrian, he actually almost killed Adrian, his own son. Why would he listen to me now?
- That is quite the point. He would listen, because it's you, - Lisa leaned back, smiling at the confusion on the girl's face.
- Oh yes, and what's so special about me? - Shari replied sarcastically.
- Nothing.
- Ouch.
- Apart from the fact that he pities you, - sensing that she was about to be interrupted, she quickly added. - I've watched both him and Adrian, thinking of a way to figure this out and stop them from tearing at each other's throats, and you suddenly came as the most valid solution I can think of for the time being.
- He... "pities" me? - Shari rubbed her neck, raising her eyebrow. Sure. He pities her so much; she flinched slightly at the memory of their encounter.
- Don't go witty. He does. He was merciful to you, he almost didn't want to kill you, that's why he didn't succeed. You're the first human after my death that he feels this way to... You are a person he did not know before all of this, you evoke his pity and you seem to have the skill to negotiate your way into people's good side and out of conflicts. You may actually have something in you to change his mind.
- That's not how it works, he...!
- You remind him of me. You may persuade him that there are people worth fighting for... That there is a life worth fighting for, - her tone was growing louder with each word, getting more insistent.
- Wait a minute, so you want me what? To replace you? Remind him of you and tell him you wouldn't want it? Tell him your final will, you think that'll stop him? - Shari jumped to her feet, backing away.
- I want you to go to find him. To reassure him, show him pity, show empathy. You will remind him of me. And he will come back to understanding that humanity is not all bad, that some people are still worth keeping alive. And that awar against them is not worth his own or our son's lives, - Lisa stood up too, sensing the tension rise and stepped closer once again. Shari did not like it. She didn't just die heroically to come back and search for yet another heroic and probably much more painful death.
- No, Lisa, I-I see what you want me to... But I'm not you! You see, I'm not you! I can't just go and drag - who? Dracula-the-vampire-king-that-just-killed-me - out of his murderous depression! - she backed away.
- If you had a choice: you can surrender or you can come back to fighting with a new way...
- Yes, I think if I had any kind of choice and if I survived, I would keep away from trouble and try to hold onto my final bits of life for as long as possible, thank you very much! - Shari argued loudly.
- You have to do it, if you live, Shari. It is the only way to protect you and... - Lisa made another step towards her.
- And die a much more painful death, yeah, thanks, great, - Shari almost hissed. Her attention suddenly turned to the pool of water behind her. So that was the whole trick, why Lisa appeared to hold her back from dying. - Oh. I know how this works. The lake is the entrance. My decision if I do or don't die, right?
- Precisely, though it's not really you, who decides. You touch the water - you either leave or wake up. Can't be sure until you do... - Lisa answered. - But before you decide and step in I want you to think. Shari, you have to fight for it, for yourself annd for Adrian, for all the people out there you've been trying to help!
- I am not your son, - she answered barely audible, but firm.
- Shari! - Lisa stepped yet again closer.
- No! I've had my bunch of suffering. I'm not going back in just because you believe I am good for the fight, I'm not! I'm selfish, okay? I did not ask for this, - she paused, glancing at the water. - Whatever it is, let it be. If I die - I die, right? - Shari turned away decisively and with a moment of hesitation made a small step forward, into the water, not looking back at the ghost.
She awaited darkness or light, hell or heaven or emptiness and quiet. Whatever escape was about to come, she threw herself at its mercy.

ocean eyes â chris evans
previous part: PART VII â masterlist
concept: a drunken game of never have i ever leads to a failed skinny dip and high sexual tensions, as well as some cuddling and late night confessions. the slowest of slow burns, part eight of many. can be read solo.
pairing: chris evans x reader
word count: 2.6k
warnings: strippin', mild alcohol abuse, sexual tension, aNgSt
author's note: by far my favourite chapter so far, i'm so in my feels about this one. the thing at the end is a more or less direct quote from one of chris' interviews, adapted slightly to fit the story. now if you'll excuse me, i'll be crying in the corner :) prepare for an emotional rollercoasterâ
Never Have I Ever was a dangerous game.
Never Have I Ever, mixed with truth or dare and maybe a touch too much alcohol? A lot worse.
The rules of the game were simple: propose something you've never done, or had always wanted to do, and if the other person had done it, they'd drink. But there was a catch: should the person who had done it wish it, they could dare the other to do it. If they refused, they had to do another shot, and the game would continue.
There were three things responsible for why you were outside in the chilled night air stripped down to your underwear.
The first to blame was Chris.
You could still remember his ever-so-cocky proclamation, already pouring out a shot for you to take. "Never have I ever gone skinny dipping."
Any doubt he had in his mind of whether or not you had â his assumption unfounded and vaguely unwarranted, but no less true â was immediately banished by your exasperated sigh and your taking of the shot glass from his fingertips.
Which led you to the second thing to blame: alcohol.
Alcohol had you loosened up and far too familiar around him, more bold and daring than sobriety would care for. You always prided yourself on being able to speak your mind, but around Chris, you were often rendered speechless. Or at least a bit more censored.
And so it was alcohol who set you up for the third to blame: yourself.
The shot went down easy â it was the fancy stuff, with a smoother texture than anything you'd ever consumed before, often only being able to afford the cheapest shot on the menu (often reminiscent of rubbing alcohol) when going out with friends â and was followed by an undaunted request slipping past liquored lips. "Alright, well, I dare you to go skinny dipping."
It didn't sound like you, but it was entirely you. And once the words were said, there was no taking them back.
An unidentifiable look crossed Chris' face, gone almost instantly, replaced by the furrow of his brow in mild confusion, before morphing into a lopsided mischievous grin. "Only if you come with me."
And so there you were, half naked and shuddering in the breeze that toyed with the ends of your hair.
"You were being serious?"
Chris had come outside to join you, and you found a hint of annoyance at the fact that he was still fully clothed.
"Deadly," you managed to get out past the chattering vibration of your teeth.
"You do know that skinny dipping means fully nude, right? Otherwise it doesn't count."
"I know," you bit back. You had your arms folded over yourself, suddenly self conscious under his heavy gaze.
He made no effort to disguise his appreciation, alcohol clouding his better judgement. Heated blue eyes raked over your figure, languid, slow. The tip of his tongue darted out to swipe across his lips.
His lids were hooded, easily dropping into a cheeky wink.
There was something about his hungry gaze on you that ate away at all inhibitions, and you dropped your arms, revealing yourself fully to him.
The way his breath caught was almost entirely inaudible, but you heard it nonetheless as you stalked forward, adding a confident sway to your hips. "Take off your shirt."
The command was so assertive, you surprised even yourself.
He didn't hesitate, immediately shedding the article of clothing and tossing it carelessly to the side.
His eyes were fixated on you, his breaths heavy and stuttering. You could hear the blood rushing in your ears as your heart rate picked up.
As you drew closer, his eyes became more visible. The pupils were blown out â consuming almost every and any hint of blue â and there was something unmistakably feral lurking in the depths.
You were practically chest to chest, so close your breaths mingled, carrying the taste of liquor, so close you could feel his erratic heartbeat syncing to your own.
A tentative hand raised itself, finding purchase on his chest. His skin was searingly warm against your cold fingertips, and it was either their chill or something entirely else that caused the shiver to run unbidden down Chris' spine.
"I need you to do something for me," you whispered. Your voice had taken on a sultry tone, one that had Chris' eyelids fluttering.
"Anything." His voice was husky, low. Intoxicating. "I'll do anything."
His head was ducking lower, his attention solely dominated by your lips, the way the lower one was caught between your teeth in an almost shy nibble, such a stark contrast to the assuredness of your voice and actions. When you spoke, your voice was a honeyed hiss. "Don't fight it."
And then you pushed.
So preoccupied with you â everything about you â he had been, that the push into the awaiting water of the pool wrenched a strangled yelp of surprise from him.
Your laughter was loud in the still night air, a stillness that was broken also by the sudden splash and the many more to follow as Chris floundered in the water.
When he resurfaced, he was livid.
"That wasn't fair."
"Fair was not on the books, Evans." Your apologetic smile was entirely negated by the amused lilt in your voice.
"Come on, help me out." He waved you over to where he was standing, somewhat dangerously close to the edge. Almost, but not quite, within arms reach of you â you stood just beyond his grasp. His hand was extended expectantly, eyebrow cocked. "These jeans aren't chlorine friendly."
"Sorry to spoil your wardrobe, Captain Armani, but how stupid do you really think I am?"
You had seen it a thousand times before: someone asks for help to get out of the pool, only to have the naĂŻve saint fall victim and pulled into the icy depths. You were no saint, and you certainly weren't going to fall victim. Specifically not to Chris Evans, and his adorable pout, and those oh so enticing ocean eyes.
He sighed, disheartened, slapping the water to splash you.
The squeal that tore itself from your throat was nothing short of hilarious as you dodged the droplets.
Chris waded to the edge, propping his hands on the side of the pool.
The very act of him pulling himself out of the water was sheer hypnotism at its finest. Water rolled off him, glistening like a thousand stars in the moonlight. The rippling water â lit by the lights in the pool â cast waving patterns all along his back, the dents of his muscles being lost only to be highlighted again.
You watched him, mouth slightly ajar in awe, as he hoisted himself out of the pool, twisting his body to land, sitting on the edge, jean clad legs dangling in the rippling water.
The sound of wet denim slapping on the pool tiles from him sitting was enough to snap you out of it.
He was breathing heavy, the shock of the water still working its way out of his system as he gazed up at the sky, hands running through his dirty blond hair to slick it away from his face.
He looked beautiful. He looked beautiful, and suddenly, it registered to you that you had been about to kiss.
Was that why you had pushed him? Panic? Sheer unholy panic at the prospect of a drunken kiss?
You swallowed thickly and reached a shaky hand to his shoulder. You were so close you could feel the warmth radiating from him, but you weren't touching him. Not yet.
When he spoke, his voice was strained. "What are we doing?"
At his words, your hand dropped to your side. His shoulders tensed momentarily â almost as if they had sensed your closeness and coiled in anticipation â before they slackened. He slowly turned to face you.
By the time you recognized the look, it was too late.
You hit the water, breath crushed from your lungs as you struggled to reconcile sudden wetness with the events that occurred.
With lightning quick efficiency, Chris had grabbed you and all but thrown you over his head, face first in the water.
You sputtered as you clambered for purchase, finally finding somewhere shallow enough for you to stand.
No sooner had you broken the surface, Chris had leapt into the water again, sending a fresh wave over you.
You splashed him directly in the face. "It's not funny, asshole."
"Oh, on the contrary, sweetheart," he grinned. You almost wanted to punch yourself for the way you melted just a little at the pet name. You were angry, not whatever this was. "It's hilarious."
ââââââ
After a considerable amount of time had passed, you both dragged yourself from the water, laugh drunk and not anywhere close to sober in spite of the shock the cold had introduced to your system.
That was evident enough in the way Chris caught you as you almost tripped on your way out of the pool.
"Woah, hey, easy now," he chuckled.
Your thanks was a playful shove of his shoulder before you staggered over to your clothes. You groaned, shivering in the night, your underwear doing nothing to preserve heat. Your clothes were wet; an unhappy side effect from all the splashing and messing around in the pool.
You sighed, pretty sure your lips were already turning blue.
That was when Chris merely â but oh so sweetly â extended his discarded shirt to you in offering.
A silent exchange passed.
You shook your head, he raised his brow. He waved the shirt insistently. You rolled your eyes, plucking it from his water pruned fingers, and quickly pulled it over your head.
It smelled like him, and you almost deluded yourself into thinking it was still warm from his body. If anything, it was just a much needed layer against the cold.
After you had collected your things, you both darted inside, almost visibly relaxing in the sudden wave of warmth.
Dodger, who had remained unconcerned with your late night swim for the most part, raised his head in acknowledgement before flopping back down in his bed to go back to sleep. It was almost laughable to think of him as the energetic furball he was earlier that day, but then again, he had every reason to be exhausted.
Chris silently excused himself to his room â wet feet slapping loudly on the ground, jeans heavy with water and dripping â and you quickly slipped off your bra in his absence, worried it would soak through his shirt.
It had already begun to smell more like chlorine than him, and you felt an inconsolable â and, in the grand scheme of things, highly minuscule â loss.
You sank down on the couch, waiting for his return. He had only managed to get you out of the pool with the promise of a movie to wind down the night, and he had even given you the highly sought after privilege of choosing said film.
"Oh, so now you decide to put on a shirt."
Chris had come back, clad in soft grey sweatpants and a white short sleeve that must've been a size too small by the way it clung to his muscular frame. "And you've still neglected to put on pants. Typical."
You rolled your eyes, shifting to give him some space on the couch.
"So," he started, almost apologetically. "I know I said you could pick the movie but we have a rule in this house â Disney movies only, so you'll either have to be very persuasive or have to endure my singing..."
âââââââ
You were a lot of things â avid film fanatic being one of them.
You could safely boast having watched all Harry Potter films in one sitting, dashing to the bathroom only between end credit sequences, and ordering takeout â perfectly timed to the end credits as well â and consuming cereal as your main forms of sustenance.
You weren't going to call it healthy, but it certainly was impressive.
So why, only halfway through The Little Mermaid, were you feeling the onset of drowsiness beginning to claw your eyes shut?
It must've been the alcohol. You could still taste it on your tongue, thick in the back of your throat.
And although you tried to fight it, your eyes were drifting shut with every passing song, every one of Chris' adorable performances andâ
You woke to your cheek pressed against something warm and... moving?
You opened your bleary eyes. At least you tried to â you were still on the precipice of falling back asleep. Your pillow stirred, and suddenly, you were wide awake and fully aware of your surroundings.
You were in the lounge, on the couch, where you had fallen asleep onâ
"Hey."
Chris greeted you softly, the warmest of smiles on his lips. He had been idly scrolling through his phone as the credits rolled, the movie having finished not a minute before.
Through the windows, darkness stretched towards the sparkle of the inner city, and in your clouded head, you registered Chris' hand carding gently through your damp hair.
You heard the distinct sound of Chris' phone locking as he set it aside, attention fully on you now. It was almost instantaneous, the way his face lit up seeing you.
"I..." Your tongue was still heavy with sleep as you tried to untangle yourself from him to no avail. Exhaustion was still thick in your body, and it was obvious to him, too. "I'm sorry, I must've fallen asleep."
He shushed you, the rumble of his voice soothing you. "Don't worry about it, just go back to sleep..."
It didn't take much convincing on your part.
At the recognition of his consent, you all but fell back down onto him.
You were almost grateful; the weight of his legs â entwined with yours â was somewhat reassuring and near impossible to extricate yourself from in your current state. Not that you even wanted to.
He hadn't the heart to tell you that one of his legs had gone to sleep about ten minutes ago. Not with you lying on him, looking so calm and at peace. Something stirred in his chest.
And a full blown heart attack was almost brought on by what you murmured next, muffled by his chest but no less audible.
"Hey, Chris?"
He hummed in response.
"Why me?" You were fighting the sleep that was slowly claiming you again, and that question had been nagging at you since you had first moved in. You just never had the courage to ask it, but with more alcohol coursing through your system than blood...
You didn't need to elaborate. He knew what you meant. Why you, exactly.
"I live in hope everyone has these experiences, whether it's someone you met and spent the whole night with, or even a meeting that lasted five seconds at a train station. Moments that were so personal and so special, it was hard to explain to somebody else."
Emotion was thick in his voice, but it was almost entirely lost on you. You nodded slightly in understanding, encouraging him to finish.
"I decided that I wanted you in my life, and when I saw you again, it was almost like the universe was giving me a second chance. It was like it was telling me to not let this one go."
And he didn't. At least not until morning.

basic manga cap tutorial || ibis paint x
I got a request on how I color my manga caps (you can check them out in #morgan-colors-bnha and #morgan-colors-hq), so I thought Iâd do this step by step tutorial that walks you through my process!
I color and draw on my phone (Samsung Galaxy Note10+) using the stylus provided with the phone, however you can use your finger. For manga cap coloring, I use Ibis Paint X, which you can find HERE for the Google Play Store, and HERE for the Apple App Store! It is a FREE app, and actually really helpful for a number of reasons, which Iâll show you down below! It does go without saying - there are a limited number of brushes that you get with the free section, but I havenât found them to be too limiting, however Iâve only done basic manga cap coloring. You can watch short ads (I havenât watched any, so I canât vouch for the obscenity of them) to use the non-free brushes for a short period of time, though.Â
The first part of this tutorial is going to be showing you how I took THIS SUGAWARA manga cap and turned it into the one you see HERE (both as pictured on the header image). The second part of this tutorial, attached at the bottom, is a timelapse video where I show you how to turn THIS BOKUTO manga cap into the one you can find HERE.Â
Alright - without further ado, letâs get into the tutorial! As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to drop by my ASK BOX! Hopefully this is in depth enough without being too confusing. â¤
Iâm doing this in steps so it can be in depth and informative enough, but I know that can become a little confusing, so Iâm going to do my best to explain each step. Iâve also highlighted using little yellow boxes where Iâm referencing, as pictured below.Â
To start, here are the ways I usually find manga caps:Â
1. Google searches, Pinterest searches, etc. Sometimes theyâre already transparent, other times theyâre not. Iâve found that Iâm able to use the non-transparent ones because of the tools that are within Ibis Paint X.
2. Tumblr blogs - there are some blogs that are meant purely for transparent manga caps.Â
3. Manga scans. I, personally, havenât used manga scans, but I know others that use them! They usually require some extra clean up, which can take extra expertise. Removing speech bubbles, backgrounds, etc.Â
Please remember to provide credit if itâs requested from the original poster!
Step #1: Open IP (Ibis Paint - Iâm not going to say it every time because WOW that would get repetitive) and click on âMy Galleryâ.
Step #2: This is your gallery - as you can see, all of my prior caps are here, and this is where you will either open an old cap and keep coloring, or start a new one. In the bottom lefthand side, you see Iâve highlighted the â+â sign. This will bring you to the next screenshot.
Step #3: This is where you can choose if you want to create your own canvas, or create a canvas based off of the imported photo. Since I donât do many âofficialâ manga cap posts where I create a full image set from them, I usually just click on âImport Pictureâ, and go from there! However, if you want to create an image canvas, and import the picture once youâve gotten the canvas open, please see Step #6 for how to import the image once youâve already created a canvas!
Step #4: This is the screen that should pop up every time you import an image. When youâre doing manga caps especially, youâll want to hit âOkâ.
Step #5: I believe these are the automatic settings, however if theyâre not on your app, these are the settings I use when selecting how to extract the line drawing. Black at 0%, White at 100%, and Middle at 50%. This will remove the background from the manga cap, and only leave the dark line art remaining.
Step #6: This is what the layer should look like once youâve extracted the line drawing. See highlighted the â+â button - this is how you will add new layers. I chose to add a new layer, which you can see in Step #7. However, if this is where you want to add an image, see the highlighted camera button. This will let you choose an image from your camera roll and import. The âExtract Line Drawingâ option will appear each time that you import an image, so donât worry about triggering it! It will trigger itself!
Step #7: Here is the new layer! I cut out the screenshot from before, but each new layer shows up on top, so I had to use the three little lines on the righthand side to drag it beneath the layer of the Sugawara manga cap layer.
Step #8: I used this new layer to import a photo of Sugawara in his uniform from a quick google search. I actually end up grabbing another one just to make sure I know what the bottom half of his uniform looks like, but I donât show it just yet. Because the layer is behind, it shows up underneath Sugaâs face. I end up erasing the parts that interfere with the cap here in a bit.Â
Step #9: When you click the brush button down at the bottom, this selection screen comes up. There are a ton of brushes to choose from, but for the base colors, I use âDip Pen (Hard)â at 100% opacity. Iâve shown it highlighted here!
Step #10: Now weâre going to create our color palette. Sometimes I will find color palettes online And import them, but for the sake of simplicity, Iâm going to use this photo of Suga along with another one that I nab later to create the palette. The way you use the âdropperâ tool (if youâre familiar with Photoshop) to select the colors from another portion of the image is to press down rather hard, and then this circular selection tool will pop up. You can keep the pressure and drag it to the specific spot you want to pick up a certain color for. Iâve found that itâs best to do this with my finger instead of my stylus. Iâm not sure if itâs because the heat of my finger and the change in pressure is easier to pick up, but thatâs what works for me!Â
NOTE: It is important to note that if you have the eraser tool selected instead of the brush tool, you wonât be able to use the color selector. This might come as second nature to some of you, but it STILL makes me screw up from time to time, haha.Â
Step #11: Using the dropper/color selection tool from Step #10, I create a small color palette, as you can see in the upper lefthand corner of the image in this step. I grab both the lightest and darkest shades from the different things Iâll need to color in for the cap. I picked up the highlights and shadows of Sugawaraâs skintone, eyes, hair, and jersey. I just draw in little overlapping circles so I can switch back and forth between the colorsÂ
Step #12: I added an additional layer in the very back of this image, and colored it in completely using a blue shade. This will allow me to make sure that Iâve filled in all of the space behind the manga cap. Itâs important to note that in order to color the line art in later, youâll actually need to âoverdrawâ. Weâll touch on that more later.Â
Step #13: As I show here, I have a layer where I use the singular skin tone shade and color in behind the manga cap, filling in all the spaces where Sugawaraâs skin is showing. I usually use a different layer for each different shade/color just in the event I need to do a bunch of erasing, or if I need to change the layer style later.Â
Step #14: Here is where I show how I âoverdrawâ. Iâm not sure if you can see it very well here in these screenshots, but the way that these manga caps are drawn, sometimes the line art isnât âcleanâ, it looks more shaded/scratchy. So, in order to combat white space, I usually overdraw and then go back in with an eraser. You can see in Step #15 the size brush I usually use - somewhere between 2.0-4.0, but most of the time I use a 3.0 size brush. Iâll go back in with the eraser with a similar size on the easy parts, and then all the way down to the smallest size - 0.3 for really close quarter erasing.Â
NOTE: Itâs important to realize that the smaller the eraser, sometimes the circumference of the eraser can be really light in opacity as well. You can help this with the intensity of the pressure that you use with your stylus/finger, but Iâve found that sometimes using a really small eraser can be counterproductive. There are times where Iâd rather âoverâ erase in which I actually erase into the cap and then redraw using a small brush size. Youâll have to play around with eraser/brush size and such to see what works best for you!
Step #15: Here is the skin all colored in! Youâll notice I colored in his eyes and mouth, which are going to end up being white in the end. I do this because usually itâs easy to forget that you need to color things in white if youâre doing it against a white background. I oscillate between the colored background and the white/transparent one because sometimes it can be tough to look at that bright color all the time. Iâve found that this is more of a tip/trick for me to be able to remember to color in his teeth and eyes and even sometimes the brow or other features! In the end, this just works for me. You donât have to do this step!
NOTE: As I stated in Step #14, using pressure can change things. The same goes for this specific pen type - the dip pen. I use about size 3.0 most of the time, but I can actually do really detailed work with this size pen (see Sugaâs ears, the spaces between his hair, etc.) by using lighter pressure. I do have a stylus, so this is a lot easier for me. The pressure was a little tricky for me to get down in the beginning, but once you realize how soft/hard you need to press down, you can use bigger brushes for even smaller areas. I find that makes it a lot easier for me, since I donât have to keep changing the brush tool - which you can do using the sliding bar at the bottom of the screen labeled âThicknessâ. The thickness of a brush is the circumference it has when you are using the hardest version of pressure you can muster, so keep that in mind!
Step #16: Here is where I do the basic coloring for the skin, hair, and eyes. These colors will be relatively the same as the colors from the palette, because there is not a âgray castâ caused by the line art sketch from the manga cap. This means that the skin color that is showing in the manga cap that Iâve colored is pretty close to the original color from the screencap from the anime/the palette that Iâve got in the upper lefthand corner. I do FLAT coloring for this - aka NO SHADING YET. So I only use the LIGHTEST shade for the hair and skin - the ones farthest to the left on the palettes for each section. I do use the DARKEST shade for the eyes, but thatâs because usually the lighter shade is the one you use most sparingly, where as with skin, the darker shades are used for shadows only and arenât used in excess.
NOTE: As previously stated, I do a separate layer for each different color. At this point there should be six layers, as follows (from the bottom up): Layer 1: Background Layer (Mine is blue, but for the sake of easy viewing, I made it white.) Layer 2: âNotesâ Layer - this is where I keep my notes, as in the reference photos, color palette, and any other things here and there. Layers 3-5: These are the colored layers - skin, hair, and eyes. Layer 6: Manga Cap Line Art
Step #17: Hereâs where Iâm showing the two different orange tones. This is what I meant in Step #16 - The original orange shade is the lower part of Sugaâs collar - as you can see, the line art shading makes the color a lot more muted. I used the color wheel to find something brighter, just for a comparison shot. I still choose to use the traditional palette that I pulled from the anime screencap.Â
Step #18: Now that Iâm ready to color the manga cap pieces that are skewed by shading (i.e. his jersey here), I usually turn the manga cap down in opacity, so Iâm able to recognize where I need to fill in! This is where I fill in the blue of the jersey, the orange of the collar and other accents, as well as the off-white shade for the number and the line accents.Â
Step #19: Using the eraser and smaller brush sizes, I fill in all of the flat colors. No shading yet!
Here comes the time consuming, nuances...
Step #20: Iâve turned back on the colored background layer - sometime between when I started and now, I changed it from blue to pink. If you can zoom in on the image, youâll see the boxes in white contain âerrorsâ. This is areas where there are âholesâ in the coloring, or where Iâve gone outside the lines. Iâm going to go back in and clean this all up with the eraser and some more brush work.Â
NOTE: This is very important, especially if youâre trying to make this a transparent image, or if youâre going to do the extra steps and color in the line work. Any holes, overdrawn, or underdrawn areas will make the final drawing look a little funky.
Step #21: Here is the shading! Honestly, this cap kind of shaded itself, haha. Some manga caps have âbuilt inâ shading, as you can see on Sugawaraâs arms and neck. I added some shading to his hair and face, trying to use the anime caps as a reference. Iâm not very good at shading yet, but I wanted to show it here so you guys could see!
I used the darker shades from the palettes on the eyes, hair, and skin. I didnât do any shading to the jersey because the manga cap lines already skew it so much, that it didnât really seem necessary. This can be a really hit-or-miss time, both with areas that you choose to shade, as well as the colors that you use. I would really suggest searching for skin tone palettes if youâre not using the anime screencaps for reference!
Step #22: For my shading, I actually use âclippingâ effects. As you can see, the two layers that are highlighted are clipped to the layers beneath. This means that the coloring on the clipped layer will âattachâ aka clip itself to the layer beneath and that layer only. So, for the shading of the skin, hair, and eyes, I chose to clip the shaded parts to the base coloring, that way even if I over drew, the colors wouldnât bleed together.Â
I did more of whatâs called âcell shadingâ for this manga cap, as well as the Bokuto one that I do in the timelapse video below. What is cell shading? This wiki page explains it pretty well, but basically itâs more âharshâ shading where thereâs not necessarily an airbrushed quality to it, itâs more blocky. You can see I only chose to use one color of shading, which makes the contrast much more stark. IP does have several airbrush tools, Iâve used them in my Bakugou manga caps for his gauntlets, and they work really well!Â
I brought up earlier that itâs important to color your base colors all the way to the edges of the manga cap line art. This clipping effect is why. On Sugaâs neck and ears, the darker shade that I used for his skintone goes to the edge and actually underneath the line art of the cap, because it is clipped to the base skintone layer beneath. Had I not made sure to go all the way to the edge of the line art, this would be much more choppy, and there would be white space between Sugaâs ear and his hair!Â
Step #23: Here is the extra step - line art shading! This can be tricky, depending on the complexity of the line art, the shading, etc. Usually, in choosing a shade to color in the line art, I grab the darkest shade for that section, and then grab something even darker. As seen in Step #18, there is that drop down box that is currently listed to âNormalâ - this will need to be set to âScreenâ for the current line art coloring layer. Youâll also need to âclipâ the layer youâre using for the line art color to the manga cap, meaning it will need to be on top of the manga cap layer - and therefore, should be the highest layer in the image.
For this image, I only did line art coloring on Sugaâs face, hair, arms, and neck. I was really satisfied with leaving the jersey alone so far as coloring. I did this mostly because of the sketchy quality of the cap, the line art would be really involved and complicated, and it just wasnât worth it to me (so sorry lol), and I liked how it looked with the darker color outlining it anyway.Â
Also, I added little details like making the sweat on Sugaâs face outlined in white! And yes, I do know that missed Sugaâs beauty mark, but weâre going to pretend I didnât just do that. I love you, Koushi, please forgive me.Â
And thatâs it! Iâm sure there are easier ways to do things, or better ways, haha. But this is my beginner tutorial (as in Iâm the beginner, lol). I hope that this helped anyone whose doing it for the first time! I stated this before, but if you have any questions, please feel free to hop into my ASK BOX and ask me! Iâd love to help anyone out! And Iâll do my best!Â
See below an additional manga cap coloring - Bokuto Koutarou this time! I thought doing a timelapse video of me actually coloring in the cap would help you guys out!Â
PLEASE BE AWARE: This video is in 2x speed so it could not be forever long and really boring lol. With that being said, I do spin the screen around several times while coloring in the cap - this could make you nauseous, so please beware of that before you watch!
Here is a link to the time lapse video on YouTube!Â
A special thanks to @cutesuki--bakugouâ who helped me a lot while I was coloring my original caps, and also to @writeioliteâ who nudged me in the direction of finally starting to color manga caps! And a little thanks to @rouge-heichouâ since I bugged her about a couple of things as well. And then as always, a huge thanks to @candychroniclesâ because she keeps me sane. Also a special mention to @pixxiesdustâ because she does really cool gifs and has done a wonderful job in the bookclub of trying to share her knowledge with everyone else.
Disclaimer: Iâm no artist, this is just for fun! Iâm sure my shading and line art can use some work.. but Iâm not focusing on that! Instead Iâm just going to keep playing around and having a good time â¤
