So I've been reading Fire&Blood and correct me if I am wrong, but are the Tullys named after the sesame street??? Elmo Tully... Grobi Tully... Kermit Tully??? Is this a translators choice or some kind of Tiffany-Paradox??? What the fuck was Georgie-boy thinking???

Animation (specifically 2D animation) is my preferred TV/film medium. A piece of live-action has to go above and beyond to get over my personal bias of, "most things would be better if they were animated," but it's taken me a long time to figure out what, exactly, makes a piece of live-action really do it for me.

I think what it really comes down to, for me, is the little details. If your live-action doesn't have some level of nuanced physical acting, intense detailing in costuming and set design, a strong sense of visual storytelling, or kickass practical effects, I'm pretty much always going to come away thinking, "I'd like it better as a cartoon."

I think some of this is due to my issues with face blindness--I need characters to have distinct silhouette and costuming, or they will all blur together in my head. Animation tends to stress the importance of silhouette, so I have an easier time telling everyone apart and following who's who. That's not to say that this problem doesn't happen in animation, or that it always happens in live action, but I do think it contributes to my personal preferences.

Anyway, just for fun, a random shortlist of some live-action that I think uses its medium well:

Child's Play/Chucky. Half the appeal of Chucky (IMHO) is the incredible showcase of practical effects and animatronics. Each incarnation of the Chucky doll incorporates incredible advances in animatronic and puppeteering technology. I have on multiple occasions compared the Chucky puppeteer team to Muppet performers. That shit is its own art form, and it's incredible. The current Chucky show makes some use of CGI, but it's all to enhance the practical effects, and the puppeteers are all given the spotlight in the show's credits. I love that.

Killjoys. The incredible nuance to the actors' body and facial acting is mind-blowing. The set design and costuming are gorgeous, and there's a lot of very good detail worked into the visual space that would be hard to animate. They use their CGI well when they do use it, but a significant amount of the show seems to be practical effects and props. Additionally, Hannah John-Kamen's ability to flawlessly portray multiple characters is so good it's uncanny and makes you forget they're literally being played by the same woman. She changes her entire body language, and it's phenomenal.

Jordan Peele's entire body of horror. His films pack in so much symbolism and subtlety that I could probably watch them all a million times and still find new details. The nuance in the acting, the sheer detail packed into the costuming and set design, the use of color...god. It's unreal.

Crimson Peak, because the set design for that film...holy fuck. The costuming and set design in that film are pure gold. The acting is also phenomenal, but I could probably talk about the set design for hours. The house is a character in its own right.

Galavant and Our Flag Means Death, both for the same reason: both shows feel like I'm hanging out at a ren faire being goofy with my friends. They feel like I'm watching a LARP. They feel like they could easily exist in the same setting as Muppet Treasure Island, and at any second Kermit is going to show up and start singing, and it wouldn't be out of place at all. I think I'd also include Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves in this category, along with The Princess Bride and Labyrinth--all of which also include kickass practical effects, choreography, and costuming.

This isn't some sort of objective truth or anything. I just like that I've finally been able to nail down some reasons why I prefer animation, beyond just, "idk, cartoons are fun."

Complex number of questions time!

If the Dragon Riders + Dagur, Heather, Viggo and anyone else you think might be interesting to add had to suddenly deal with The Muppets, how do you think they'd react?

Also! If they were actors, would they be good at working with The Muppets, and if so would they be the 'treat The Muppets like fellow actors' type or 'treat themselves as a Muppet' type?

I feel like Tuffnut is the one most likely to totally be into it. He's not like, oh their just puppets whatever. He's taking it super seriously. He'd have so much fun chatting with Gonzo (though, he'd probably hide Chicken from him lol) and Fozzie and Animal. He's basically them, after all. Tuffnut also would vibe with the rest of Animal's band. Also, Tuffnut would do both, at the same time, he'd treat the Muppets like a fellow actor, and also treat himself like a Muppet. He's great.

Viggo, as an actor, would go the Michael Caine route, and treat them like fellow actors and treat it super seriously. He'd be good at it. Viggo also, would have to be dealing with One Miss Piggy being SUPER hot for him. I'm not sure how he feels about this? I think he'd humor her, for sure. (Kermit and Hiccup are like facepalming lol) Maybe she'd karate chop him? (That'd be kinda great lol) I don't think Viggo can handle any of the other Muppets.

I think Fishlegs would be so nervous at first because like, The Muppets are ChaoticTM but so are the twins he knows. He'd definitely make that noise he makes when he's nervous. I think he'd get along well with Bunsen and Beaker for obvious reasons. And Scooter. As an actor, I think he'd be good at it and he seems like he'd take it seriously, so he's the first one.

Astrid is debatable. I mean, if Miss Piggy is into Hiccup and they aren't poly, then Astrid and Miss Piggy might get into blows. Hard to say who wins there. Though Kermit would try to get involved I'm sure lol. Maybe she'd find Kermit calming. Astrid in general would be like, this is so weird, what do I even DO. Idk why but I picture like, them wearing the same outfit lol. Like, there's a magazine image from 30 Rock where Miss Piggy is wearing the same dress as a character and she's wearing it better. I'm sure she'd find Pepe to be a pest. Her and Rizzo would be interesting. As an actor, Astrid definitely does not seem like the act like a Muppet type, but I also don't think she'd be very good at acting with them. That's okay, though!

Hiccup. I mean, Hiccup's Kermit, is he not? Am I wrong? He's basically Kermit. He'd definitely get along with Kermit. Miss Piggy would likely be super into him. I mean, who isn't, right? Hiccup would like Uncle Deadly, because well... he's a dragon. I think Hiccup would just... roll with it. He knows the twins, he's already been at the front end of changing society, he can roll with changes. He's not Sam Eagle lol. He'd handle it and probably enjoy it. He gets along well with Bunsen, Beaker, and Gonzo. As an actor, he'd do well, and I'm leaning towards the Tim Curry end of the spectrum.

Ruffnut. Tim Curry end of the spectrum. She vibes so hard with the band. She and Janice GET ALONG SO WELL!!!!!!!!! She'd flirt with Kermit knowing it'll piss Miss Piggy off. She does not care. She's vibing. She'd also vibe with Rizzo and Pepe. She'd probably make out with Pepe if she could. Gonzo too.

Snotlout. Kinda want him to interact with Fozzie the most mostly because of his association with bears. But also, him and Pepe and Rizzo would get along pretty well lol. I could see it. As for acting... I was gonna with bad, but then I remembered Sir Ulgerthorpe. Michael Caine end of the spectrum.

Heather. Not good at acting. I don't think she'd be thrilled with having to deal with the Muppets. She's too serious. Kermit needs to sing Rainbow Connection at her.

Dagur. He would have SO MUCH FUN. Both as actor (he'd be the treats himself as a Muppet end of the spectrum) and just whatever. He's so into it. He's basically Animal. Wikipedia has this sentence: "Author Christopher Finch calls Animal "the ultimate representation of a long line of Muppets who personify unbridled appetite",[9]: 103  both "carnivorous beast" and "physical manifestation of pure libido." Enough said.

I did think about Stoick and Gobber but I don't really have a lot of thoughts. Stoick is probably awkward about it, Gobber vibes. Gobber is Tim Curry end of the spectrum on the actor side. Debatable what Miss Piggy thinks of Stoick lol.

Swedish Chef probably would fit right in on Berk. That's all.

It's been such a shitty week, but this is my last day before Christmas, yay! I won't be back in until the 27th. And I have so many things planned to make these days off fun!

Tomorrow is Arthur's birthday! We are going to do a little photoshoot, give him all his many presents, and take him and all the girls to the private dog park in the evening. We'll definitely pick up Leia and Holly to come to the park, and now that Willow is big enough she might get to come too! I think I can shove a 6th kennel in my car if it's a small one, but we have to FIND a smaller one ... Leia could potentially fit in my cat's carrier lol. I prefer having all dogs secured in the car, but if need be I think Willow can ride on Tom's lap.

Oh and then Saturday we have an agility fun match! Leia and Arthur are going. Should be fun. I will probably also take them to a public dog park before the match. I have mostly been avoiding public dog parks for a while now, but this one I've never had a bad experience at, so we will see how it goes. Arthur loves to play with other dogs so much.

On Sunday we'll probably go to the members only dog park we take Arthur to. Man he's gonna have a big weekend! He'll love it though. He's not actually a High Energy Dog, so he'll be passed tf out after all these outings and we will know peace in our home lol. Oh and I suppose I might go to church ... I kinda miss my family church, it's one of those little, cute, homey, nice ones. All the shitty people left when our minister officiated a gay wedding many years ago, so the congregation is good people ... I'm not particularly religious, but the community aspect of church is nice, and I like the Christmas hymns. And honestly I like the sermons, our minister is cool, he's really into history and mythology, and he plays Dungeons & Dragons, and he has a Kermit the frog puppet and can do the voice perfectly for the kids. We've had good conversations.

On Christmas we are taking our 3 Dog Circus to my parents' house in the morning. And then the show moves to my in-laws' for the afternoon and evening, where 2 more spaniels will join the circus. We have not done the 5 dogs together yet, so I'm sure it will be chaos lol.

I'm considering bringing all 3 to my aunt's on Boxing Day too. And trying to convince my mom to bring Leia. I think 6 dogs is just the thing to spice up our family get together. 3 mutts, 1 spaniel, 1 beagle, 1 XL lab ... Oh even better, my aunt should also bring her two Schnauzers, and my mom's cousin should bring his Cairn Terrier. 9 dogs would be even spicier.

Ok I picture the general vibe of the clay dragons being just very Generally Creaturey?? Like maybe you don't immediately think 'clay' or 'dragon', but you do understand that these are living things that also double as ornaments. They could go more stuffed toy in appearance for that like 'childish'/fake vibe. A lot of the understanding that these characters are made of clay would come from context clues (i.e that liz is a potter and we see her make them) rather than the texture of the puppets.

They'd still have to articulate like puppets so the dragons can talk and do actions, but it would be much more muppety in nature - hands on sticks or wires, and the head is just a big sock puppet. Think how kermit the frog emotes and moves. The idea here is just simple character design. It might even look like liz or lucy are puppeting them at points - its just quite clear that these things need external help to move, though the pupeteers wouldnt be visible on screen.

The goblins in labyrinth are all very simple mechanically, but visually more complex. They actually look like something unlike the muppets I chose lmao. You could maybe get more personality in the dragons this way. This group in particular is just how the pennykettle dragons are <3

The scale of a lot of the dark crystal puppets is super unnecessary for this but stay with me 💀

This style would work really well especially for any living dragons (should this real adaptation hit book 5) and I think that could echo down in the clay dragons and grockle (foreshadowing innit 😎). (An aside for anyone unfamiliar: these puppets are man sized, they are fucking huge. Iirc the skesis were 2 people per costume, they're a lot more like human actors in their mannerisms etc.)

Post ✨️David believing✨️ the clay dragons get more complex. They're still small, but they're not so obviously hand operated anymore - the ideal would be for them to look like they aren't puppeted at all. More articulation - actual fingers? (Claws, rather) Their wings get segmentation instead of being flat felt pinned to the body, etc. The eyes actually move where they're looking and the puppets breathe. Still stylised of course, but noticeably different from book one.

I will be honest I've run out of steam but can elaborate at a later date!

Aside: bonny is either a really shit puppet for maximum comedy or the only real animal (also for maximum comedy). I don't know if its funnier for him to be a rug with googly eyes or just a real life cat.

I would truly be happy with any tldc adaptation but in my heart it's made by the Henson company and the dragons are all elaborate dark crystal/labyrinth style puppets. Maybe they get a bit muppety in their clay form/before David and the audience ✨️believe✨️ but then they become more detailed. The polar bears are just like. Real though (realistic stage puppets like war horse.... or real ass bears, pick your poison this isn't happening anyway)

A funny little dragon I named Kermit, because he sits like a frog. The puppet version took me a long time to complete and as it turns out I still didn’t do it quite right (you can see that some teeth fell out), but he is a prototype, so I’m not going to feel too bad about it. I have since constructed a much larger “adult” version, which... also needs a lot of work. Lol. That’s the True Art Experience though. Everything you make will always be better than the last thing and not as good as the next.

Don Sahlin (pronounced "Sa-lean") (June 19, 1928 - February 19, 1978) was Jim Henson's main designer and puppet builder in the 1960s and '70s, and a key influence on the overall aesthetic of the Muppets. In 1962, Henson contacted Sahlin to build a dog character he had sketched for use in commercials, Rowlf. Don Sahlin soon became Henson's primary designer and builder, beginning with commercials and early projects such as Tales of the Tinkerdee. He also provided special effects for Time Piece, and assisted on stop-motion projects, such as the animated ham used in the second Wilson's Meats Meeting Film (in which Sahlin has a cameo). In The Muppets on Puppets, Henson introduced Sahlin to the viewers as "doing some of our backstage effects and working some of the puppets" in the 1968 special. In a story-telling skit, he alternated between puppeteering Rowlf's right hand and operating effects like an "explosion". Don Sahlin went on to create and build Muppets for Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas, The Muppet Movie, amongst many others. Don Sahlin also helped Jim Henson with two of his stop-motion Sesame Street films, "The King of Eight" and "The Queen of Six". In a Closeup Magazine interview from 1976, Don Sahlin said "Jim Henson supervised the filming, but he gave me all the freedom in the world to do what I wanted.

Sahlin is the designer credited among Henson staff as the creator of Ernie and Bert, Grover, Cookie Monster and other classic Sesame Street characters. He is "the inventor" of the Muppet look, from a design point of view. As discussed in the book Jim Henson's Designs and Doodles, many of the Muppets began as Henson's rough sketches, which Sahlin then built and modified as needed. This often included special mechanisms or effects; for the La Choy Dragon commercials, this meant "devising a system for this early full-body character to actually breathe fire."

Sahlin was known to refer to himself as the "guardian of the essence" of the Muppets. Beyond building specific characters, Sahlin contributed two significant concepts to the Muppet aesthetic, "the Magic Triangle" and "the Henson stitch." The former was a simple but effective approach to positioning eyes, creating a triangle in relation to the nose and mouth. Jim Henson explained the importance of eye placement: "It would be the last thing [Sahlin] would do, and he always wanted me there, to make sure it was right for both of us -- making sure the eyes had a point of focus, because without that you had no character." The stitch is a specific method of sewing cloth as tightly as possible so the seams would be "nearly invisible," thus aiding the illusion of stylized "reality" when characters were filmed in close-up. This technique, dubbed the "Henson stitch" by Sahlin, does not in fact create a truly invisible seam, but worked sufficiently for television purposes (hiding, for example, the seam down the middle of Kermit the Frog's snout).

I did decide to keep this competition to only puppets in the traditional sense and not include characters that are puppets in the "being controlled by someone else" sense, as much as I did enjoy those submissions! Also apologies but I did end up only using the Muppets that were submitted individually, I didn't really have another big group to put them against and it just seemed a bit more fair imo! Anyway! The Masked Singer Season 6 Costumes (Ranking & Opinions/Guesses)

Hello everyone! We are back baby! Welcome (or welcome back) to Ana's Masked Singer recap, where I, Ana, talk about this not so little show called The Masked Singer, not sure if you have heard of it lol. IT’S SEASON 6 TIME EVERYONE, which means that when a new season is upon us, we gotta rate some costumes (hey, I do make the rules, and that’s a special tradition we do here in case you are new… if you are new, hi, welcome, have a seat, get a cookie, some dinner, whatever you would like, and relax we are about to go on a ride of sorts with costumes). Having said that, let’s get started!

Preface: The show will air September 22 and 23 as a two night premiere and costumes are being revealed little by little at the moment (When I am writing this, idk how many contestants there will be in total so this might be more than 1 part long)

Preface over… introducing the new costumes! *INITATE DRUMROLL PLEASE*

1. Banana Split 🍌🍨

Thoughts: It’s a cute idea ngl…. It kinda makes me sad that there was already a banana costume and an ice cream costume and they just kinda put it together, but it’s still an adorable idea. I love pair costumes on the show, so this is very cute, the cartoon nature of it is super fun.

Prediction: (I am gonna put a prediction on who I think it could be, like whether it’s an athlete, musician, a pair of siblings, a couple, etc.) I think they are a couple, probably married or played a married couple on TV… I am also gonna dream cast this for fun: my dream cast for Banana Split would be either Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard or Fran Drescher and Charles Shaughnessy (who played Fran and Max on The Nanny, who were love interests/a married couple on the show)

First Clue: 3 pair of 🎲 with the numbers adding to 6

2. Hamster 🐹

Thoughts: it’s soooo fluffy and cute omg I love it… I really hope this is a good singer because I just love this costume, it is too cute to be sent home the first week (I’m looking at you Gremlin). Everything about this costume is so cool and whimsical, any child (and me) would go crazy for the hamster.

Prediction: My brain automatically goes to an athlete who can sing (hopefully) but from experience with the show, this seems like an athlete would be under this mask… but another part of me thinks it might be an actor, so I am torn between the 2: actor or athlete (hopefully who can sing ok)… probably male I predict. Dream cast actor wise would be Jack Black and athlete wise I have no idea because I know close to nothing about sports and I don’t wanna embarrass myself here with names

First Clue: A whistle

Rating: 10/10!

3. Cupcake 🧁

Thoughts: This is a costume I have been waiting for a while… I love I so much. It reminds me of the cupcake float from Victorious (if anyone knows that reference I applaud you) and I really love it honestly.

Prediction: An actress or/and singer (female), I low key want it to be like one of the actresses I grew up on like anyone who used to be on Nickelodeon or Disney Channel… so my dream cast would be between Liz Gillies (who played Jade on Victorious), Victoria Justice (Tori also on Victorious) or Sabrina Carpenter (from Girl Meets World on Disney Channel)

First Clue: 🧭 pointing North

Rating: 10/10!

4. Mallard (Duck) 🦆

Thoughts: Wow, this one is really dope and dapper looking, it kind of reminds me of Giraffe from season 4, I really like the look of it. Also, I heard from the preview that he can sing a mean country song, so I’m excited, I hope he’s good, fingers crossed.

Prediction: From what Robin Thicke said in the preview, perhaps a country singer or an actor who can sing country. My dream cast would probably be Keith Urban, Jason Aldean, or LeAnn Rimes’s husband (who was on that Netflix show about country music so I guess he can do a country song idk) Eddie Cibrian

First Clue: Red telephone ☎️

Rating: 10/10

5. Dalmatian 🐶

Thoughts: This one is also pretty cool, I really hope someone in sports isn’t under there because that would be way too predictable… it reminds me of last season’s Bulldog mask which ended up being Nick Cannon… but like cooler for some reason

Prediction: I’m gonna go off the cuff here (since those kind of responses work for this show lol) and I think it might be a rapper of some sort, similar to like Frog or Chameleon. My dream cast for this one would probably be Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg (lolll get it… probably not tho), or Chance the Rapper

First Clue: Eagles 🦅

Rating: 9/10

6. Octopus 🐙

Thoughts: This is my first time seeing the octopus, since it was just revealed today… but I really like the vibe, even though it is a bit of an unconventional twist on an octopus. I like the idea of an octopus for this season since so many international versions have it and the American one really needed it. It’s cool ngl, I was hoping for more of an authentic octopus tentacle thing instead of just the pants but it is cool regardless

Prediction: I think this is a male actor or singer, someone a bit older or someone popular from the 80s or 90s. I am in between like a member of Boyz 2 Men, Ted Danson, or Lance Bass for a dream cast.

First Clue: Cookie 🍪 dunked in milk 🥛

Rating: 8/10

7. Bull 🐂

Thoughts: I really like what Masked Singer did with the bull, making it look like a Spanish matador which is super cool and also ironic in a funny way. It looks really cool, kinda reminds me of the Dragon from season 4. I like it a lot tbh.

Prediction: I think this might be a male actor or musician… I am thinking similar my prediction to Octopus, either older or popular from the 80s-90s. Again, dream cast wise, I would say someone from Boyz 2 Men, AJ McClain from Backstreet Boys, or like a legend like Paul McCartney

First Clue: Lions and Tigers

Rating: 9/10

8. Queen of Hearts 🫀

Thoughts: It’s a dope costume, but the one eye and the mouth is kinda creepy looking tbh. I do like the idea of an actual heart with a crown being the Queen of Hearts instead of like a similar thing to Alice in Wonderland’s Queen of Hearts.

Prediction: Probably a female actress or TV personality (probably from reality TV perhaps), age wise I am not too sure but it might be a shorter girl. Dream cast wise I would say Liza Koshy, Nicole Richie, or Paris Hilton.

First Clue: Horses

Rating: 8/10

9. Baby 👶🏼

Thoughts: Damn, that’s a creepy baby and Masked Singer confirmed on Instagram that it was their biggest costume yet, which their previous biggest one was 7 feet, so a huge baby makes it even more terrifying like wow! However, having said that, part of me is pretty intrigued to see who the hell is under this mask. I’m sure they cannot sing tho…

Prediction: My mind straight goes to an male athlete because that would be so funny and kind of a troll on Masked Singer’s part… and that’s most of the big people we have seen thus far. So, dream cast wise, you are allowed to laugh at me but my mind immediately went to Shaq (Shaquille O’Neal) because he’s huge and if you are gonna go big for someone, it would be for Shaq.

First Clue: "This pacifier sucker never claimed to be classy, especially when I get gassy"

Rating: 6/10

10. Beach Ball 🏖

Thoughts: Yeah, there is no way a human could fit in that thing, but it’s cool regardless… I also saw that it has two faces. That’s super interesting to me honestly, it reminds me of Snail from last season who ended up being a Muppet, so this is a bit reminiscent of that. I like it, this is the most intriguing one thus far.

Prediction: As I kind of hinted at in my thoughts, I feel like this is a Muppet or puppet of some kind, round two! There might be more than one puppet in there because of the two faces, but I am gonna assume one for dream cast reasons, I really want it to be Miss Piggy because it would be funny with Kermit being there last season.

First Clue: 2 band-aids shaped like an X

Rating: 8/10
