Just tossing in one thing, the cat out of the bag comes from the same source as 'a pig in a poke', where people would buy a pig in a poke (a type of bag). Enterprising con artists would instead of a pig, put a cat inside the bag, and once you opened it, you found it was a cat, thus the cat's out of the bag.
I don't doubt that both sources might be valid for 'the cat's out of the bag' though.
dead metaphors are really interesting honestly and specifically i’m interested in when they become malapropisms
like, the concept being, people are familiar with the phrase and what people use it to mean metaphorically, but it’s not common knowledge anymore what the metaphor was in literal reference to. people still say “toe the line” but don’t necessarily conjure up the image of people standing at the starting line of a race, forbidden from crossing over it. people still say “the cat is out of the bag” without necessarily knowing it’s a sailors’ expression referring to a whip being brought out for punishment. some metaphors are so dead we don’t even know where they come from; like, there are ideas about what “by hook or by crook” references, but no one is entirely sure. nobody knows what the whole nine yards are.
and then you throw in a malaprop or a mondegreen or two, where because people don’t know what the actual words of the expression refer to, they’re liable to replace them with similar sounding words (see “lack toast and tolerant”). so we can literally go from a phrase referencing a common, everyday part of life to a set of unfixed, contextless sounds with a completely different meaning. that’s fascinating. what an interesting piece of the way language and culture are living, changing, coevolving things.
maybe part of the reason we can’t figure out where some phrases come from is that over time the words themselves have changed! one of the theories about “the whole nine yards” is that it’s a variant of “the whole ball of wax,” which some people further theorize was originally “the whole bailiwick,” meaning just “the whole area”! the addition of “nine yards” might be related to “dressed to the nines,” which might reference the fucking Greek muses! language is so weird and cool! (and I only know any idioms in two languages!)
the point is. I just came across the words “nip it in the butt” in a piece of published, professional fiction, and now I can’t stop giggling.

it is so funny to me how i started learning english on my own age 10 because the manga i was reading was turning so so so bad i went to fan content to cope with how shit it was. and 15 years later this pays off as my boss tells me i'm an essential asset in the team as the only fluent english-speaker.

AuDHD is so funny sometimes like what do you mean my hyperfixations/special interests will last for years on end or possibly forever but they will cycle out every month or two with absolutely no transitional period or warning. like i will think about the same topic every day obsessively for 46 days in a row and on the 47th day with no visible cause adhd brain goes "ok! bored of that now" and autism brain goes "dw i got something queued up for ya" and i blast into full blown obsession on some other topic whose mental file folders haven't opened in 9 months. brain's out here treating hyperfixations like a crop rotation. once the dopamine runs out it cycles in another one but once something's in the rotation it never ever leaves. last summer we brought in one from when i was 11. it's so funny to me but frustrating too bc like. i cannot stress enough my inability to predict or control this. or how completely abrupt and random it can be
EDIT: seems this is more common among ND people than i thought, and probably not limited to AuDHD specifically :] i was just describing my own experiences and didn't expect this post to blow up, so don't take me for an authority, but i'm glad it resonated with so many of y'all

a true testament to Michael B Jordan's acting skills is that everyone i've seen talk about Sinners online is thirsting specifically after either Smoke OR Stack and generally has opinions over which twin is more attractive

I want to post this here too because I’ve seen it happen a few times

Please understand that there are cultural differences and language differences, if you see this happening let the person clarify what they meant, that person might just not be familiar with words the western side of the internet use

What if the characters in Ace Attorney all texted each other. Because they're friends. <3
(My alt text descriptions were a little long so I've added the individual text exchanges below, btw if there's any way I can improve my alt text please let me know!)
[id: drawing one shows text history between Maya Fey and Phoenix Wright on Nick's phone, starting with older texts at the top
Maya: ramen? (Nick has given this a thumbs up)
now we see texts from today at 11:37
Maya: Burgers?
Nick: sorry, not today, big case :(
Maya: Aww Nick
Maya: I'll pick it up and bring it over!
Maya: ... can i use your credit card (she punctuates the sentence with a big smiling face emoji) /end id]
[id: drawing two shows text history between Phoenix Wright and Miles Edgeworth on Miles's phone, starting with older texts at the top
Edgeworth: This was a riveting article, I thought it might interest you.
now we see texts from today
Nick sends a screenshot of a twitter post that reads: Lawyers help people get through the worst day of their life. They're good at it because they have experience getting through their own worst day, which just so happens to be every waking day of their existence
Miles: Ha.
Nick: Just one "ha"?
Miles: Not your best work.
Nick sends a frowny face :( /end id]
[id: drawing three shows text history between Miles Edgeworth and Maya Fey on Maya's phone. The text bubbles from Maya here are green as a result of her, an iPhone user texting Miles, a google pixel user. Maya has also sprinkled several emojis into Miles's contact name, the libra scales, the angry face emoji, the shouting emoji, and the clashing swords emoji. They're mid conversation and Miles has sent a text bubble so big we can't read the whole thing.
Miles: -completely unnecessary. Doing a Steel Samurai reboot so soon after the series ended is a foolish decision, everyone will be directly comparing the two from the moment the first episode drops. I don't believe they even have a fresh direction for the show, the only difference will be the cgi. God forbid we rock the boat and follow a new character! It's abundantly clear to me that the studio executives are cowards.
Maya: Oh my gosh, and did you see the new outfits? Maya includes a sobbing emoji
Miles: Oh, don't get me started.
we see three dots at the bottom of the screen indicating that Miles is still typing. /end id]

i love when words fit right. seize was always supposed to be that word, and so was jester. tuesday isn't quite right but thursday should be thursday, that's a good word for it. daisy has the perfect shape to it, almost like you're laughing when you say it; and tulip is correct most of the time. while keynote is fun to say, it's super wrong - i think they have to change the label for that one. but fox is spot-on.
most words are just, like, good enough, even if what they are describing is lovely. the night sky is a fine term for it but it isn't perfect the way november is the correct term for that month.
it's not just in english because in spanish the phrase eso si que es is correct, it should be that. sometimes other languages are also better than the english words, like how blue is sloped too far downwards but azul is perfect and hangs in the air like glitter. while butterfly is sweet, i think probably papillion is more correct, although for some butterflies féileacán is much better. year is fine but bliain is better. sometimes multiple languages got it right though, like how jueves and Πέμπτη are also the right names for thursday. maybe we as a species are just really good at naming thursdays.
and if we were really bored and had a moment and a picnic to split we could all sit down for a moment and sort out all the words that exist and find all the perfect words in every language. i would show you that while i like the word tree (it makes you smile to say it), i think arbor is correct. you could teach me from your language what words fit the right way, and that would be very exciting (exciting is not correct, it's just fine).
i think probably this is what was happening at the tower of babel, before the languages all got shifted across the world and smudged by the hand of god. by the way, hand isn't quite right, but i do like that the word god is only 3 letters, and that it is shaped like it is reflecting into itself, and that it kind of makes your mouth move into an echoing chapel when you cluck it. but the word god could also fit really well with a coathanger, and i can't explain that. i think donut has (weirdly) the same shape as a toothbrush, but we really got bagel right and i am really grateful for that.
grateful is close, but not like thunder. hopefully one day i am going to figure out how to shape the way i love my friends into a little ceramic (ceramic is very good, almost perfect) pot and when they hold it they can feel the weight of my care for them. they can put a plant in there. maybe a daisy.

Grover: So I'm curious, what's Annabeth's 'love language'?
Percy:...
Percy: Asking
Grover: Asking?
Percy: Yeah. You should've seen how happy she got the other day when I asked her about the construction of the Pantheon's dome

still i think the one of the more fun differences drawn between illario and lucanis that was lost would be illario's ability to endear himself to others but serious lack of empathy, vs. lucanis' (self perceived) inability to be charming but how much he cares. it's interesting that the game has gone with the "lucanis' ability vs illario's lack thereof" because i think illario being the dellamorte 'best in show dog' vs. lucanis' attack dog would have made me so unwell.
lucanis is... awkward. he's not unlikable, because he is usually very polite, but he doesn't speak much and only seems to care about the other dellamortes. he once sent viago de riva a knife with no note (who knows what he could have meant by this). he does what caterina asks of him, and by his own admission, cannot say no to her. he is a dramatic and prolific killer, and that makes how untouchable he is even worse.
and the crows like illario, sure, AND he's a good assassin! he's even a good crow! he's so good that he can make lucanis smile, and so he is the charming, sociable one. he's the one that stays in treviso and can be relied upon to care, illario's even the one people prefer over caterina and lucanis!
but illario is decoration. he's the prize poodle, and even if poodles were bred to be working dogs, nobody will ever pick him to protect the house over the german shepherd that regularly mauls intruders. anyways the analogy is getting away from me. the point i'm trying to make is that i want illario to have a different kind of jealousy/hatred that's not just over 'being bad at killing' but also an arrogant loathing for everyone around him that is getting harder to hide, because they've forgotten he can bite and is just itching to rip someone's jugular out. illario is very good at hiding his family resemblance to caterina, while lucanis suffers under his grandmother's, and his own, reputation.

Gojo before his enrollment in Jujutsu Technical College The coming-of-age ceremony for Gojo Satoru, held by the Gojo clan: Gojo Satoru, somewhat forcefully, decided to leave the Gojo clan to attend the Jujutsu Technical College. At that time, to ensure that (at least) the Zenin clan, the Kamo clan, and the Jujutsu Headquarters would not misunderstand the Gojo clan and Gojo Satoru as being in conflict, the clan set the condition that he undergo the coming-of-age ceremony before enrolling, and he accepted.
Akutami Gege gave us a deeper look into the dynamics within the Gojo clan, as well as the political and social dynamics of the influential groups within the Jujutsu world, with a single sketch, so here is a bit of my (unorganized) thoughts.
The main purpose of holding Genpuku (元服: a traditional coming-of-age ritual, marking a person’s transition from childhood to adulthood and their formal assumption of responsibilities within their family or social role) was to publicly affirm Satoru’s allegiance to the clan before he entered the Jujutsu Technical College, where he would have to directly interact with other clans and the Jujutsu Headquarters. The clan was sending a political signal that, despite leaving for the college, it was not an act of rebellion but a sanctioned move, and that Satoru remained tied to the Gojo clan’s values and authority.
At the same time, it was the clan utilizing his status (being feared and perceived as powerful even at a young age). The Genpuku ceremony served to formally establish his status as an adult and a key figure within the Gojo clan before he fully entered the Jujutsu society. This move would ensure that other clans or the Jujutsu Headquarters viewed him as a representative of the Gojo clan rather than an independent actor.
For Satoru on the other hand, his compliance with the ceremony shows both his desire for independence and his understanding of the political necessity of maintaining appearances within the Jujutsu order. Being tied to the influence and power held by the Gojo clan would allow him to create freedom for himself within the system that he otherwise would not have if he were to outright reject the clan. In this sense, his enrollment was a step toward establishing his own identity, separate from but still connected to his family name. It would allow him to grow on his own terms. His willingness to meet the clan’s condition was not a sign of submission but of strategy. He accepted the ceremonial obligation in order to secure the freedom to operate in a larger sphere of independence.
