Hihi Mr.Haitch…I Hope you and your lovely family is doing fine ^^

So I come bearing a weird set of questions-

1) This is something I was curious about for long, and dunno If it has been asked before, What are your and Haitch’s hogwarts houses? I assume Haitch to be a gryffindor. You seem to be a tie between ravenclaw and slytherin (do correct me if I’m wrong)

2) I had asked this to Haitch before, now I wanna know your answer. Which song(s) reminds you/ embodies Haitch perfectly? Have you even written a song/ poem for Haitch?

3) What other musical talents do you have? Can you sing? Beatbox? Rap?

4) Are any of your sons inclined towards ever learning music? Are they intrigued by you playing the guitar?

5) Do you ever see yourself committing to learning a new language? Which language do you find interesting?

1. Please don't reignite that argument. Haitch will tell you she's Ravenclaw, but she's Gryffindor. For me - I always came out in a three way split between Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff.

2. Several - If We Were Vampires by Jason Isbell, Glasses by Jonathan Coulton, and I can't remember the rest. I'm sure I've answered this elsewhere and gave totally different songs - When the Day Met the Night by Panic at the Disco was definitely one.

3. Apart from guitar, I've got some basic skills on the piano and drums.

4. Our oldest has some interest in the dru.s, and now has an electronic kit but I suspect I've used it more than he has. They couldn't be less interested in my playing.

5. I'll probably finish learning french and German eventually, but I have a fondness for Old English.

Shadow probably wouldn't learn to play in less he found out sonic could play in witch case he will learn to up show sonic

The Layers of Victoria's Laboratory

I cannot begin to express how much I love LBP2 soundtrack, but this is probably my most favorite along with The Factory of Better Tomorrow by Richard Jacques. The soundtrack of the game is as creative as its gameplay.

Victoria's Laboratory was composed by Winifred Phillips, a Grammy award-winning video game composer. I honestly can't even describe what genre this is, the closest to its genre is symphonic steampunk metal. It's a unique fun mix of classical orchestra (opera vocals, strings, bells, organ, and flute), folk (accordion), and modern instruments (electric guitars, drumkit, and beatboxing).

The counter melody of the vocals and instruments are so addicting, I always come back to listen to all the stem tracks because it's so good on its own as much as it is mixed together. Then I learned from her video demonstration of her book A Composer's Guide to Game Music that this is the method she works with.

Basically, she teaches how "vertical layering" works when composing music. Sections of your music should be able to stand on its own and correspond to the difficulty level and scenery of the game, but be complementary to other sections of your music. She demonstrates by making 3 sections - percussion and rhythm (exploration level), melody (interaction with important event), and padding (final level) - each having their own foundation and leading instrument when isolated but does not clash with the main melody, rather compliments it when it comes together with the other sections.

It's perfectly demonstrated in Victoria's Laboratory. The beauty of LittleBigPlanet is that it lets you interact with the soundtracks. You can listen to the stem tracks individually and really hear how each track can stand on its own even without the leading melody.

Track 1 - Melody

3 layers - opera vocal, organ, bell. This track is very gothic in sound, haunting and grave, almost church or baroque-like. The operatic voice serves as the main melody, the top layer. The organ is very subtle padding, a grim presence like the instrument itself can sound in some organ pieces. The bell complements the organ, representative of metal/steel being hit.

Track 2 - Vocal Fugato

6 layers (possibly) - soprano, mezzo, alto (all doubled). This is the most brain stimulating track out of all. It sounds too full to only have 3 layers and it sounds too authentic to have an octaver or choir fx so there is possibly 6 or more recordings of the vocals to achieve the choir effect.

A fugue is a style where two or more melodies repeat the main theme, develops and intertwine melodically. Fugato is a style where a passage of music may be in fugue form but the entire music is not strictly in fugue.

The vocal section, along with the main melody, gives the haunting or madman feel, which I think fits the imagery of Victorian and science themes of the character (Victoria).

Track 3 - Accordion, Flute, and Beatbox

4 layers - accordion, flute, and 2 layers of beatbox. I'm actually not sure if it's flute, but it sounds like a woodwind on synth. The "pop" sound sounds like a mouth noise than synthesized sound, and there are parts where the beatboxing and the pop sound overlaps and it's physically impossible to do it so that's why I think it's 2 layers.

The pop sound is reminiscent of bubbles or caps opening, the flute like a kettle whistle or a train’s chimney, the beatbox like a bustling, hissing, and clattering in the kitchen or of machine parts. The accordion adds the whimsy and the sound of train. Already, this stem track paints the colorful scene that is Victoria's steampunk bakery-laboratory domain.

Track 4 - Strings

4 layers but in ensemble soundfont - 2 violins, cello, and contrabass. Pretty much nothing else needs to be explained here, it's a classical orchestra, serves as support to the vocal fugato.

This track gives the classical, old era vibe, which is again, fitting to the Victorian era theme of the game's level.

Track 5 - Guitars

6 layers - lead, rhythm, 2 guitar noise FX, 2 bass synths. I love how this track sounds so full, textured, and creative with sampling noises from a guitar. This track is reminiscent of pipes and machinery, supporting the industrial imagery of the game level.

Lead guitar is panned left and switches between two different types of distortion. Rhythm guitar is panned right, uses overdrive, and consistently chugging.

2 layers of guitar noise FX - one is panned left and the other is on the right. You can hear muted down/up strums, pick slide, fret noise, etc. but they're extremely coated in distortion FX.

2 bass synths - Serves as foundation. One synth is in the lower octaves, the other in the mid. With the way it glides, portamento saw may have been used.

Track 6 - Drums

3 layers - drumkit, low-tuned conga, digital bass drum. A different instrument may have been used instead of conga because it sounds way too low, but it may just be because of mixing. The difference between the bass drum of the drumkit and digital bass drum can be heard clearly at (2:43) where the digital bass drum is a continuous low pulse and the kick is like a heartbeat. In some parts, the snare, ride, and conga supports the melody's rhythm.

All in all, I believe it's a total of 26 or more layers and 6 tracks, and that's insane! Imagine working with that many instruments from different genres, making sure the texture of each stands out but not clash, and mixing it all without making it muddy. All while staying true to the themes and aesthetics of the character and her game level.

In the A Composer’s Guide to Video Game Music demo video, she considered the character’s traits and backstory in choosing what instruments and sounds to associate to the character when making their soundtrack (i.e. purple alien character with a big mouth = mouth noises, animal noises, sci-fi synths). No doubt she’s done the same to Victoria, which is why her soundtrack is so descriptive of her game level and character design through instrumentation.

And that’s exactly why I love instrumental VGM; just like character design, you can design music unique for your character even without lyrics.

I wish there was a behind-the-scenes on the LBP2 soundtrack, I would’ve loved hearing a more thorough breakdown on how Winifred Phillips composed this song.

My personal list of reaction video pet peeves

I was talking in the VoicePlay Discord server about how "the problem with being familiar with so many of the more well known reactors is that when you're wanting to go on a bingewatch of other reactor content, just as something to do, you're more likely to find folks who do or say stuff that mildly get on your nerves", and how I could basically write a list of my pet peeves at this point, and then I was like "wait a minute, I could just write the list on my Tumblr blog", so here we are! Things that push my buttons/annoy me/get on my nerves when it comes to certain VoicePlay/Geoff reaction videos, in no particular order!

Using the wrong picture for the thumbnail: I don't even watch the videos that do this, but we have a whole thread in the Discord server for sharing reaction videos we come across - it's where I go if I'm wanting new reaction videos to check out, and just to keep up with the reactors I do usually watch. But yeah sometimes channels will use a picture from a VoicePlay/Geoff video when it's not even the one they're reacting to? Sometimes even one from the other channel? (Like a pic from a Geoff solo video for a VoicePlay reaction). There's one particular channel that's so notorious at doing this that it's practically a running joke with me on the server whenever someone shares one of their videos.

Looking at the comments before watching the video: This one isn't really a long-running pet peeve or anything like that, but basically I was just starting a reaction video for Geoff's I Walk The Line, and it was a pair of reactors, and they decided to look at the comments before watching the video, and the first one they read out talked about the ending, with Kathy walking out with the mugs of coffee, and that was when I decided to click off. Like you just spoiled it for yourselves my dudes!

Never checking the video description: Like okay sure, I know that basically all VoicePlay reactors also react to a lot of other stuff, and not all groups/artists have useful info in their video descriptions (like apparently neither Pentatonix nor Home Free include any sort of proper credits in their descriptions apparently), but VoicePlay does! And so does Geoff for his solo stuff! And people in the comments will tell you about that! It'll tell you so much!

Going on and on about how much you don't know: Can be in regards to the song or about the group, or both. Like it's fine and valid to not know anything about a song before watching a cover of it, and of course it might take a while to learn the names of everyone in VoicePlay, especially with former members and stuff, but man, when reactors are like "you can remind me of their names but I'm just gonna keep forgetting, lol", it gets on my nerves! Make some effort! (Sidenote, how the heck do hardly any reactors remember the names of all of Geoff's clones, despite knowing that they have names?)

Not rewinding the video at all after pausing it: Sometimes it's fine, if it's clearly at the end of a line, when there's a pause in the vocals/percussion and stuff, but if you're clearly pausing in the middle of a singing part, then just press the left arrow key on your keyboard! Just press it once or twice! Please! (Seriously I just recently watched a reaction to The Little Mermaid Medley where the guy paused right in the middle of Geoff going from super high to super low, and didn't rewind it before unpausing! Can you believe!)

Not wearing headphones: If VoicePlay fans tell you in the comments to wear headphones for your reaction videos, then wear headphones! (I don't care if you have a fancy surround sound system in your home office/studio - use headphones anyway!)

Singing/talking/beatboxing over the video: There's one pair of reactors whom I mostly quite enjoy, but when they did a reaction to Geoff's cover of High And Dry, they apparently knew the original song, and so they were both singing along to the final chorus! And I was internally screaming because I was like no! You're missing the layered vocals and Geoff's gorgeous high notes! Just silently mouth along if you must, please! Sing-alongs are for after your first time reaction! And like if someone is just being like "woah!" or "that was cool!" or "nice!" or whatever during the video, then yeah sure I don't mind, but if you have a full sentence or more to share, then pause the video to talk! It's not that hard of a concept!

Saying that they're not into "gimmicky" videos with props and a whole bunch of "distracting" stuff, and that they prefer the more serious videos: You've come to the wrong acapella group, my dude. If you don't love them with their silly/"gimmicky" stuff, you don't deserve them with their more serious stuff!

Not liking that Geoff/VoicePlay didn't do a song the way it is originally: It's a cover - it ideally shouldn't be identical to the original, otherwise what would be the point? And Geoff/VoicePlay always find ways to change things up. Get used to it or find a different group.

And of course the obvious, being blank-faced when someone does something really cool in the video: I mean of course there are some things where you can only really understand that it's cool if you understand a bit of music/vocal theory, but then there are other things where it's like "come on how can you seemingly have no reaction to that?" (Though also I'm AuDHD and a couple of my favourite reactors are neurodivergent as well, so I kinda more enjoy and relate to the "big" reactions to things)

There are probably one or two other things that I could probably add to this list, but this is all I can think of right now :P

hi hi hi today's reminder is one: i love knowing i was in your dreams, it always makes me feel good for some reason and two: KEY'S NEW SONG!!! i learned from beatbox to not watch the tiktoks of the pre release audio so I don't get sick of it but it's SOOO good, it's super fun and key is, as always, basically an entire group with his vocals and rap and dancing and visuals like that man is an Idol and also the mv is i think my favourite this year so far. up until now it was svt's FML but this takes it. it's so fun and so true to corporate life and the way we all wanna escape and so whimsical and so distinctly key, even after he stepped away from the retro sci-fi themes. Okay, I love the word “rapscallion,” and every time I see it I think about a story where one character is a chef who worked through the ranks and learned hands on day to day rather than going to a culinary school or through an apprenticeship, who raps on the side as “Rap Scallion” and works on rhymes and beats while cooking and takes hints from the sounds of the kitchen—the hiss and sizzle and crackles—and the beatboxer is also in the kitchen and uses the kitchen sounds—pots banging, pressure cookers whistling, timers beeping. 

The opposing character is a trained chef (apprenticeship/culinary school), with a more refined, “classical” approach, some changes to renowned dishes but nothing earth-shaking. Recites lyrics or poetry while cooking/sending each dish? Dishes connected to a poem/memory, chef is considered “The Empath”? The menu changes daily and the diners must accept the dishes that express how the chef feels that night.

The chefs meet (competition, networking, run into each other at a different bar or a food truck? If a food truck, Chef A overhears Chef B giving constructive criticism on the food, takes offense for the “little guy/gal/non-binary pal” who is just leaning at the window and listening/taking notes (because hey, free advice! Who would be dumb enough to turn down good ideas??) and Chef A goes OFF.

Chef B holds up a hand and says, “ I’m a (CIA/Cordon Bleu/etc.) trained chef with my own restaurant and I run my kitchen. I offered my thoughts to (the owner of the food truck), and we were having a great conversation. What are you bringing into this, other than your need to be the center of attention?”

And then the whole situation turns into a rap battle because Chef A is “Rap Scallion.”

Chef B would have to have an even worse seafood-related name. Probably they came up with it on the fly and Chef B is so embarrassed because it’s AWFUL.

Ok, so this is basically 8 Mile mashed up with Cook Up a Storm.

Good to know.

My brain gives me some WEIRD ideas.

More ninja headcanons, instruments edition™:

- Wu plays the Flute, and he also flute beat boxes, and everyone tells him it's impressive asf but he doesn't see it as such, I'm gonna also go ahead and say his staff is the Flute, basically taking it from the movie, he only does it when he's bored, so he'd be watching the ninja train and he'd suddenly start playing his oversized flute-staff out of boredom

- Jay's definitely the guitar, when everyone's gathered for the day of the Departed, he's the one to pull out the guitar when everyone is around the campfire, generally preferring to just play it instead of singing (partiality because his singing isn't great) but he would sing if evryeone else joins in

- Kai loves the drums, if he isn't training or doing chores, he's playing the drums almost 24/7, he's the typa guy to pull up random ass songs just to add his own drums to them

(mental image of baby shark playing while Kai is absolutely fucking ripping it with the drums like there's no tomorrow)

- Cole's is a bass guitar, because that's the only headcanon I accept >:)

So yeah he loves his bass guitar, he and Kai make a kick ass duo if they decide to team up for a song or a random tune they thought of, however they remain in second place in the "music playing duos" *wink wink*

- Nya's is the trumpet and sax, I'm sorry but the mental image of her playing the trumpet or sax is way too good to be left unused

Generally, she prefers a more laid back approach when it comes to playing both instruments, mainly making jazzy tunes, and she's one of the few people who actually make full music tracks instead of randomly playing whenever she feels like it, with Kai being the one working on the drums, and Cole being the one to provide a really really low tone bass guitar in the background to break up any background silence

- Lloyd originally didn't take interest in music, but after the Oni invasion he thought to himself "might as well learn something now that life is somewhat calm again", so he picked the harmonica and he is really damn good at it, you've heard of Flute beatbox, but have you heard of HARMONICA BEATBOX??? (yes it actually exists BTW, it's just as goofy and cool as it sounds), and if he and the team are in a dessert, you better bet your ass he's gonna play the hermonica as long as they're there, which is both amusing and annoying to everyone else around him

- and the last two, Zane and PIXAL

Zane and PIXAL can play all instruments almost immediately from the get go, they just need a few hours to fully perfect them, but they both still prefer using one instead of all of them

Zane picked up the violin, recognising the emotional petional it had, so he immediately fell in love with it, at first he was a bit apprehensive about telling his team about his hobby but eventually they all found out when they heard him play it in his room because he forgot to close the door, and much to his delight they were actually really happy he picked something up to express himself like them

PIXAL picked up the piano, she really doesn't know why she likes it so much, one day it just clicked to her

Like Zane, she was also a bit apprehensive about telling the others, but one day Zane caught her playing it, and he proceeded to tell everyone about it with the biggest "my GF is so badass" look on his face, she was a bit worried at first when they found out about her piano skills but she eventually she got used to it

Now because I'm a sucker for the 2 nindroid Ninjas literally doing everything together (PIXANE best ship don't @ me)

I also headcanon that when they both found out that the other plays an instruments, 2 very complimentary ones at that, they immediately started writing up a fuck ton of songs/tracks, like you'd walk in on them and thier conversation would be something like:

"wait how about a small violin part here?"

"wait, how about making the part be broken apart by the paino? so the second the paino ends, a small violin part starts, and the second it ends the piano starts up again?"

"WHY ALSO NOT MAKE IT SO THAT IT EVENTUALLY REACHES A CLIMAX WHERE THE TRACK ENDS WITH BOTH INSTRUMENTS PLAYING AT THE SAME TIME?"

"YEAH ALSO MAKE IT SO THE SONG'S MOTIF PLAYS AFTER THE CLIMAX AS THE ENDING!"

"THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I'M THINKING-"

Back to the topic at hand, yeah they write music together mostly, they're either the most emotional roller coaster you've ever heard (always makes someone on the team cry) or they're just more laid back, usually the piano and violin sounding hopeful in these songs

But if they're feeling chaotic, then oh boy are they gonna write up some ridiculous but cool shit, by that I mean a crazy fast paced piano with a violin (to get an example of what I mean, take a listen to the song "Xi - ascension to heaven")

Sephiroth (a.k.a Mista Steal Yo Gurl) Headcanons

A/N: Hey hey y'all! I'm back again wit some Sephiroth related content. I've been on a pretty hard FF7 kick as of late in light of recent developments with the remakes and stuff, so once the creative juices got ta flowin', I just took the ideas that came and ran with 'em. Is the father of three boys (in this au, I headcanon that he is Kadaj, Loz and Yazoo’s father; the boys have a surrogate mother)

Lowkey a good beatboxer (he can really only do simple beats, mostly because he’s never dedicated any time to learning other techniques, but he’s got the basics down pat)

Likes the Aussie brand shampoo and conditioner (he also takes extra care when detangling and does so from ends to root, because trust, with hair that long he must detangle)

Loves Sashimi (also a big fan of Tobiko eggs) 

Is most always seen with his gloves on (because he’s just on the right side of anemic and his internal body temperature is, contrary to popular belief, slightly lower than that of an average person’s)

Needs reading glasses that do the opposite of normal ones (he needs glasses that slightly decrease his visual acuity)

Is an avid reader (Sephy-kins loves books and reading, but his eyesight is naturally extremely sharp, so focusing on small black words causes extreme eye strain and can give him headaches, so he wears specialty reverse engineered reading glasses that help lessen the keenness of his vision) 

{Sounds backwards, we know, but he’s gotta do what he’s gotta do 🤷🏾‍♀️}

Prefers fiction books over non-fiction (Sephiroth is highly intelligent, and as such, can become bored quite easily, so he prefers fiction because the abstract concepts, realities and systems created in those stories is much more stimulating than plain ole history or something of the sort)

Is multilingual (Sephiroth was taught and taught himself to speak and read multiple languages. Aside from English, he can speak: Japanese, Korean and Thai, Mandarin, Greek, French and Vietnamese. He can read/is learning to read: Arabic, Hebrew and Hausa. He is learning to speak and read German.)

Can’t snap with his right hand (and it annoys him to no end)

Sleeps with his eyes partially open (he actually taught himself to do this in order to always be alert)

Prefers waffles over pancakes (Bonus: Treats chocolate chip waffles as a guilty pleasure)
