Thicker Than - Monthly Update

This is a really short little update this month because I took a few weeks off this project during the Christmas/NY break. I’ve started work on Chapter Thirteen, writing all the ally interactions and the first part of Lucius’ interrogation scene. I had a lot of fun writing some of the interactions (perhaps too much fun, because the tone is a little all over the place and needs a wee bit of editing). I hope they’re fun to play too.

A couple of readers have let me know that it’s really hard to have a lot of allies in the last bit of the story without romancing them. Specifically, it’s almost impossible to have Iliya and Marcel in the final part of the story if one or both of them haven’t been romanced. I’m treating this as a bug and am going to try and make it easier to have more allies in the end game without having to seduce them. 😅

As always, thanks so much for your feedback and support. This game is SO BIG now. It's mind boggling to think about how far it's come. I wouldn't have been able to do this for so long without the awesome community of people sending me feedback, encouragement, or just silly little asks.

Some more fan art of @barbwritesstuff Thicker Than, featuring my single parent Vampire, Dr. Roxane Blackwell, playinging ukulele while sininging a lullaby to her son, Percy.

The top image is of Roxane before her death, in Percy's nursery singing her infant son his favorite lullaby "You Are My Sunshine" while he's nodding off in his crib cuddling his stuffed rabbit. Underneath are the lyrics of the song's chorus, bordered by glimpses of Roxane and her son. One image is of Roxane in a red dress lifting Percy in the air after watching his class play of Peter Pan. The other image is of Percy giving his stuffed rabbit to Roxane, because even this young he knows how much his mom misses him. The bottom shows an older Percy in his room, next to Roxane during her imprisonment. In almost a mirroring of the top image Percy is playing his mother's ukulele along with an old CD Roxane burned of her singing and playing Percy's favorite lullabies. Meanwhile Roxane is laying in her cell, cuddling her son's stuffed rabbit and singing the same lullaby.

It's interesting to think about Roxane's three allies and fellow prisioners potental reaction to hearing a parent Blackwell trying to stave off the isolation by sing a lullaby. Espically since Tracy, Marcel, and Iliya all have their own issues when it come to family and parent child relationships.

Tracy was the first to find Roxane, and learn she had a son. She knows better than anyone the kind of grief Roxane going througe, having been an unwed teen mother before her death. Tracy never got a chance to raise her own son, she could only watch him from a distance untill he eventually dies from old age. This only adds to Tracy's guilt not only for getting Roxane involved with the Night Court to begine with, but because she knows Roxane is going to experince the same loss of outliving her son. Only with the Night King's 100 year sentance Roxane will not only miss her son's last moments, she might not be able to find his grave anymore.

Marcel while being one of the oldest vampires in the cell oddly enough could probably relate to Percy the most. Roxane confided in Marcel about where her son lives, because the foster home is in his territory, and thankfully he has kept his promise to her about keeping them safe. Considering the time period Marcel was born into he never got the chance to know his own mother, and being raised on in souther plantation it's possible the other adult slaves acted as foster parents for him. Marcel would have had to experince being ripped away from the mother figures in his life over and over again. Watching them being sold off, or even dying due to the abuse they suffred at the hands of their masters. Even after 200 years and the end of slavery, Marcel knows too well their are still many threats to people like himself, Roxane, and Percy. A brilliant and beautiful black woman like Roxane, trying to raise Percy by herself while becoming a doctor. No wonder Marcel was so drawn to Roxane, even with his fondness for fledgings, she was able to have a family and finish medical school with top marks! These were things that seemed like a dream for Marcel when he was still human! This also fuels Marcel's hatred for the previous Blackwell and the court that they stole Roxane's family and future from her, espically since during those 5 brief years Roxane has become so dear to him (either as a lover or friend depending on the playthrough).

Iliya's cell is right next to Roxane's so he would potentaily be able to hear her lullaby the clearest. While Iliya might agree with the other's Roxane's singing is better than his, the song is probably painful for him to hear. Eventhough Iliya never had children of his own (at least that he knew of) he does still keep in touch with Judith, the grandaughter of an old flame, and probably feared for her saftey as well as his own when Lucius hired him. While Roxane can potentaly introduce Iliya to Percy during his romance route, it's possible he could have already learned about Roxane's son while spying on her. Iliya was a soilder before his death he knows very well how quickly family can be used as leverage, and how easily innocent civilans like children can wind up as casualities. He would not wish those same horrors and tragities he lived through on Roxane and her son. Eventhough he did ultimately did side with Roxane over Lucius, Iliya will probably spend the rest of his immortal life trying to make amends for betraying Roxane's trust. Even if she does forgive him Iliya has spent the last 5 years learning about Roxane. She's inteligent, witty, driven and very easy on the eyes but still judges herself more harshly than anyone else. Roxane tries so hard to be a good mother to Percy and a compassonate doctor to her patients. Espically since under diffrent circumstances Iliya could have been under Roxane's care as an elderly veteran (and would have shamlessly have flirted with her, as Roxane would definatly be prettier and smarter than the doctors and field medics Iliya knew in his youth). She doesn't deserve any of this!

There are a couple of questions that might be up to interpretation, but I wanted to ask if you had a personal canon/headcanon about:

If Marcel isn't a close enough ally to go underground with you, he's dead by the time we're released. Did Gaius kill him, or Nathan, or something/someone else?

How much older is Gaius than Lucius? Decades, centuries, millennia?

What did Gaius take from the other lords, and why? (Like Marcel, if he killed him, or why destroy Hemmings' face?)

Not knowing doesn't impact my enjoyment of the story, but I'm curious if those lean more toward, "there is an answer and I know it; it's just not really necessary for MC to know that, so it doesn't come up" or "it's up to interpretation, but my theory/instinct would be..." 🙂↕️

Gaius is the one destroying the lords of the Night Court. If Marcel isn't in prison with you, he'll be destroyed by the king.

Gaius is a lot older than Lucius. Gaius adopts new identities every few thousand years... and when he picked out Lucius to be his brother, he adopted the persona of a Roman noble. Before that, he was a warlord. Before that, he was someone else. He's been doing this for longer than even he knows.

Gaius takes bits from the lords who offend him. He's most offended by submission, so if perceives a gesture to be submissive, he'll take a body part associated with that offence. Eg, Sister Agatha spoke in Latin to try and appeal to him, so he took her tongue. Lord Wu held his hands behind his back, so Gaius ripped them off at the wrist. Ravima wouldn't look him in the eye, so Gaius took their eyes.

But Gaius is gross and likes trophies, so sometimes there isn't a good reason for the body parts he takes. Sometimes he chooses them flippantly. Sometimes, he just likes the look of something... like MC's jawbone.

Forks High School- A Living Hell

Davina's P.O.V.

I had forgotten how good being on a motorcycle feels.

I should've worn the helmet- I was probably breaking some law by not wearing the helmet, but the wind pushing back on my face and blowing out my hair- even if it was a little chilly- felt amazing.

I only had to travel on the highway a little bit in order to get to the actual High School.

Pulling up to the school made me realize it was one of those schools where the classes were separated and small. Just bloody wonderful.

I also realized that this town looked like it was living in the 1900's still. Old, junky cars, barely a WIFI tower in the area. I bet all the students still had flip phones.

I parked my motorcycle near the front office, getting out, locking it, putting the brake down, and then throwing the tarp over it. I yanked out my bag and book, hurrying to the front office.

I opened the door, relaxing a little at the warmth.

The woman behind the desk looked up, "May I help you?"

"Um, yeah, hi." I said, awkwardness seeping in through every part of my body. Lovely. "I'm new here. Davina Michaelson?"

"One moment dear." The secretary said, turning to her old looking computer, typing in something that was probably my name, and then she hit another key and a piece of paper was printed out of the machine. "This is your schedule." She said, standing up, leaning over it with a highlighter. "These periods." She pointed to periods with nothing after them, "Are empty periods as you only signed up for the classes you needed to graduate. You are permitted to leave campus during those times if you can get back here on time."

I'd probably just hole up in the library. Wait-

Did they even have a library?

"Thank you." I replied instead, taking the piece of paper from her.

"Ah, one more thing." She said, turning to a stack of papers and lifting one up. "I believe you were the one who requested this?"

I took it from her, scanning it. It was a form to fill out for an internship at the hospital here. I'd always wanted to be a medic.

"Oh yes, thank you." I said, glancing at the stack of papers, "Is there really a lot of competition."

She smiled gently. "You're one of the serious ones, aren't you?"

"You mean that students will go for the internship without actually wanting to be in the medical field?" I asked, confused. Why would anyone do that?

She laughed, sounding a bit. . .bitter? "Yes, to get closer to Dr. Cullen. He's one of the most eligible bachelors in the town. Young too. Incredibly hot."

I snorted, "Typical."

"Good luck. I certainly hope you get the internship."

She sounded sincere. Maybe she was just glad I wasn't after the hot doctor. He probably wasn't even that hot. Or if he was, he was most definitely married.

Of course, that could make him all the more attractive.

Like Lucius Malfoy.

Oh wait no- eligible bachelor. So like Severus Snape.

I cleared my head of fantasy characters and made my way to the first class of the day: History.

I had gotten there about twenty minutes early- much to my surprise- and the teacher was surprised about my appearance. He signed the slip of paper and I made my way to the seat he showed me to.

Then I pulled out Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and started to read it.

I had read Pride and Prejudice before, and I mean- it was good- you know, for a book that didn't have any magic or mystical creatures. But I mean, add zombies to it and you've got me a whole 'nother world I was falling in love with.

I didn't pay much attention as the class slowly started to fill up. I didn't even notice the people who sat on either sides of me and they didn't bother me, although I was sensing very excited vibes from the person on my left, and very nonchalant vibes from the person on my right.

Finally, as the class settled down, I slid a Hufflepuff Quidditch style bookmark into the book, sliding it underneath my desk, pulling out lined paper so that I could start my notes before I took in the two people on either side of me.

The girl on my left was a pixie girl, short cropped black hair that reminded me of a goth Nymphadora Tonks. On the other side of me was a tall boy, extremely pale face, dark under the eyes, weird gold eyes, and had this weird bird nest hairdo going on. He could've been good looking if he didn't look like he was trying out for the circus. Now, if he had wavy hair, maybe shoulder length, and let some colour into his cheeks, he'd be quite decent.

"Hello!" The girl on the other side of me said and I looked back over to her. "Hi."

"I'm Alice Cullen and that's my boyfriend Jasper Hale."

"Davina Michaelson." I said hesitantly, waiting for the reaction of something sarcastic about the TV show about the come out of her mouth.

Instead, she simply said, "That's a pretty name."

Maybe she'd never watched the show? I supposed there were some uncultured people out there who'd never seen Vampire Diaries or the Originals and if they were, they definitely lived in this town.

"Thanks." I said.

"So, you're new here?" Alice asked in undertone as Mr. Jameson started to teach about the Industrial Revolution.

"Obviously." I said with a bit of a smirk and tone.

She didn't get the Harry Potter reference either and I was wondering if I could stand being friends with her.

"You're not the only one." Jasper said quietly.

"There's another new girl?" I asked with a bit of a raised eyebrow.

"Well, she's only been here for like, a couple of days. She arrived here last week." Alice replied. "Her name is Isabella Swan, but she has everyone call her Bella."

I was a bit surprised. I hadn't realized she would come back. . .I don't think she'd been here since she was Four and I wasn't entirely sure that she would even remember me.

"Oh." I replied, not knowing what else to say.

Once the class ended, I grabbed my things, standing up, making sure I still had the slip of paper.

"Would you like to sit with us at lunch?" Alice asked, drawing curious glances from anyone around her. I had a feeling that she was considered a popular kid and they were now wondering why I was so special.

I smiled. "I'll think about it. But I'm not really good company at lunch." Even more surprised looks. I guess no one would have dared turn them down. Not that I didn't like these two- but I truly wasn't good lunch company.

And with that, I walked off, heading to my next class.

In my other classes, I met two other people who looked like they might be related to Alice Cullen and Jasper Hale. The boy's name was Emmett and he looked like the typical jock. Short black hair, blocky face, big build, thick muscles, large hands. Really not my type at all.

He was totally dating a blond, I just knew it.

And the other was Edward, who had a resting bitch face that screamed he would rather be anywhere else but here. I supposed he could be good looking. The red hair, the brooding face, the dark eyes. Except he had those lips, you know? The ones that make his face rather girlish.

By the time lunch came, I was starving. I bought a coke- they had no rootbeer, pathetic- and a bag of nacho Doritos, and some ice-cream.

I had a sweet tooth, was that a problem?

I ate quickly with one hand, reading my book with the other, as I sat at a table completely by myself.

I really didn't mind. I had never gotten along with people my age as they were super immature and didn't know the difficulties of life. Besides, it was easier to read when it was semi-silent, rather than surrounded by a group of boys and girls that were screaming and talking loudly.

Once I was done eating, I read the book with both hands and it took me a very long time to realize that someone was calling my name.

Finally, someone sat down next to me.

I jerked, slapping them across the face with the book, skidding backwards on the seat.

"Jesus fuck Tyler." I yelped when I realized who it was.

Tyler smirked and said, "I'm glad you think Jesus would be interested in the likes of me. Except- no Homo."

I scowled at him, trying to turn my attention to the book. "Come on, come sit with us, you're not actually going to sit here the entire time and read are you?" Tyler teased.

Tyler Crowley. Younger than me, African American, pierced ears, was my friend back here in Forks before I'd left.

"You know perfectly well that's exactly what I'm going to do." I said with a smirk.

Tyler grinned, "You leave me no choice then. OI! WE'RE SITTING OVER HERE NOW!"

I smacked Tyler on the arm. "You idiot!"

"Awww, you love me Davina."

I scowled deeper.

Soon, I was sitting across from a girl named Jessica, a girl named Angelina by my side. There was also Mike, Eric, Bella, and Lauren.

Right off the bat, I found Mike way to flirtatious, and I was pretty sure that both Lauren and Jessica were going to turn out to be bitches, but just about everyone else I could deal with. Bella and Angelina were very quiet, and Eric was probably the only guy I could crush on.

I had a thing for Asian dudes. After all, if you can't have a hot, thirty year old movie star, then you had to have a really hot Japanese or Korean dude.

Not that Eric was hot, but if my choices were really low I could definitely vibe with him.

"So, introduce yourself." Jessica said in a perky voice that I realized I already hated.

"Okay, I'm a Hufflepuff, a Cancer, born in the year of the Tiger, I love to read, I love to watch movies, I have a sweet tooth, I liked to live on the dangerous side, I drive a motorcycle, the only facts I know are about animals, I love fantasy and magical creatures, and if I could turn into a vampire or a werewolf my life would be perfect." I rattled off with a smirk.

Everyone just stared at me. Should I add a fact about animals?

Yeah right, like what? Painted Turtles survive the winter by breathing through their butts? Or how about Axolotls can regenerate their parts? Or even better, female Koalas have two vaginas. Yeah, somehow, I don't think any of that would help them on their science tests.

I looked at Tyler who was in a fit of loud laughter. "This is why I read at lunch."

"You're quirky." Mike finally said.

My distaste at him immediately grew. That's what he had said.

"Thanks." I muttered, trying to turn back to my book.

Tyler snatched it out of my hands, closing it, and leaning an elbow on it. "Come on, didn't you plan on making friends?"

"Nope." I replied, trying to shove his arm off the book. "Give."

The rest of the table turned back into talking. I noticed Bella kept glancing over her shoulder at the Cullens.

I noticed there was another girl there, blond and beautiful. She was sitting next to Emmett and I just knew they were together. I knew he'd be dating a blond.

'Oh brother, please don't tell me that she actually fell for Edward. Look at the girly lips.' I thought to myself, because it was obvious Edward was the only one left for Bella to be gawking at. I met Edward's eyes. Well, whatever, I thought as I looked away, turning my attention back to the book that was being held hostage. It's not like he could read my mind.

I didn't have a class after lunch- I only stayed for the food- and I made my way outside to my motorcycle. I folded up the tarp, stuffing it in the motorcycle carrier.

"What do you know, you actually do ride a bike." A deep, hesitant, almost southern voice said.

I stood upright, shooting a glance at Jasper. "Course I do. How'd you know?"

"Heard you're little speech at the table when you got frustrated with your friends." He replied.

I raised a skeptical eyebrow. "You heard that?"

"You weren't as quiet as you probably thought."

That was probably true. I was known to get loud. I shrugged, "Fair."

"Would you really want to be a vampire?" He asked with his own skeptical eyebrow raised. I was pretty sure he looked better than me doing it.

"I'm weird." I said with a shrug of my shoulders. "I mean, it always depends on the type of vampire I could become, you know?"

"Umm, type?"

I sighed, "Well yeah, I mean, there's the kind that can do magic, like heretics, and then there are the kind that can compel humans to forget that they were fed on. And then there are vampires that are half-vamp, half-werewolf, which is actually really cool. And then I'm sure there are just plain normal vampires that are allergic to garlic, burn in the sun, and sleep in coffins."

Jasper looked so puzzled that I couldn't help but laugh. "Sorry, I don't think this town has even read any of the fantasy stuff. No one gets my Harry Potter or Vampire Diaries or Marvel innuendos. Oh well."

I straddle the bike, kicking it to a start along with the key. "See you tomorrow Jazz."

There was a bit of surprise on his face as I pulled out of the parking lot, heading straight for the hospital.

Swordmaster is outright said to be the third head of the Hoshimi family, and is all but confirmed to be an ancestor of Miyabi's. She may even be the mother Miyabi lost in the Fall of the Old Capital, depending on how long ago these events are meant to have taken place. If so, the sets up Miyabi, Belle and Wise to have a fascinating three-way dynamic.

Lady Sunbringer invented Bangboo, and is almost certainly the founder and first CEO of the Marcel Group as well. She is extremely reminiscent of MiHoYo's mascot Kiana Kaslana, particularly her appearance in Honkai Impact 3rd. Notably, Kiana is heavily associated with the Moon.

Leader Joyous is one of the most fascinating of the seven for me, because of the mention he "made his way through the Divine Maze", a phrase which lights a fire in my imagination. He looks uncannily like Lighter to me, and also appears to share Caesar's hair and possibly her crown as well. The scar over his eye alludes to a common ZZZ and Hoyoverse motif, but in this specific invocation it even brings to mind Lucius. As of this writing I haven't gotten to spend time with Lighter in-game, but at the moment my headcanon is that Lighter is Leader Joyous. Possibly even the First Overlord under a different name, given the apparent Outer Ring connections.

And now we come to the three most striking and compelling Void Hunters for me personally, certainly within the context of this blog: The Falkenhayn Mercenary Troupe.

Colonel Vike has the vibrant fuchsia hair and wields the katana. Fans of the Honkai series will instantly recognize her as a dead ringer for franchise reoccurring character Raiden Mei. She does not appear to have an equivalent in the main game, breaking from prior HoYo tradition, but Caesar, Jane, Yanagi and Anby all have one or two of Mei's signature characteristics. Indeed, Mei being an iconic, highly skilled Electric-element swordswoman, one can easily see an echo in Anby or Yanagi. If I had to pick one modern day analogue for Col. Vike, however, it would be Jane.

Lieutenant Colonel Dan of the Guard of Staves is the big fella at the right, very much resembling a massive war mech. I interpret them as literally such and also sentient, an early AI android construct of the type we know existed in Eridu's time. There is a faint call-forward to Billy in certain aspects of their design, and in the fact both are sentient AI former war mechs. However, I believe Dan actually exists in modern-day New Eridu in the form of Qingyi: A sage martial arts master and staff user who is also an AI construct in an android body. Qingyi is one of the wisest characters in the game, has a connection to the White Star Institute and speaks openly to Belle and Wise in her story about being rebuilt and reconstructed. It is also worth noting that, in a spiritual context, the word "stave" can have multiple meanings.

The Leader of the Falkenhayn Mercenary Troupe is quite tellingly the only Void Hunter who isn't named, but we know who she is: The trailer all but literally tells us this is Nicole Demara long ago in another lifetime. I do also share the fandom consensus that she is an allusion to Elysia, the breakout character from Honkai Impact 3rd. It is also heavily implied the female speaker in "Where the Miracle Began" is the Leader, and by extension also Nicole. She is thus couched in an incredible degree of fascinating symbolism, most of which shoots straight into the mystical, and I could spend several posts of this length or longer just talking about that aspect of her character. But for now, since she doesn't have a canon name, I have tentatively decided to refer to this version of Nicole as General Nikola von Falkenhayn.

And finally, and most crucially as far as the main story of Zenless Zone Zero goes, there is Professor Arche. "Arche" refers to "the first principle" in Ancient Greek philosophy and theology, and this Arche is obviously connected to "Helios Academy" and "Phaethon". The Greek myth of the son of the Sun god and his disastrous ride through the sky is at the heart of Belle and Wise's story, and the evidence as I interpret it points very clearly to Professor Arche being Belle and Wise's mentor and mother Carole Arna, or at the very least her parent. I find it much more striking and emotionally impactful for Arche and Arna to be one and the same, however.
