Not just Magical Exhaustion or that amazing Magic Euphoria post but a Secret Third Thing
So much pent up magic inside Whumpee that they just have to let it out or they'll combust. Maybe literally.

weakening curses disguised as expensive gifts. rings that suck out the life force of the bearer. bracelets that seep a sickness into their veins. chains that drain magic out of the prisoner to use as a conduit. innocent looking runes that nullify healing. a brooch siphoning energy from the heart. swords that drink the wielder's blood as much as their foe's. knight whumpees faltering and stumbling, royals leaning on walls through surges of dizziness and illness and unstoppable fatigue, a servant's hands halt their collapse, struggling to stay awake...........

(Belated) Febuwhump Day 10: magic exhaustion
CW: Wounds, magic overexertion
Caretaker kept pouring magic into Whumpee. They had to heal them.
Gradually the flow of blood from Whumpee’s wounds slowed and their pulse steadied.
Finally Whumpee blinked open their eyes. “Caretaker…?”
Caretaker let their magic stop and smiled at Whumpee. “You’re gonna be alright.”
As soon as they were out of the desperation of the moment, a wave of dizziness hit Caretaker and their vision blurred. The telltale signs of overexerting their magic.
Their unsteadiness must have shown outwardly, because Whumpee asked, “Are you gonna be alright?”
“I will. Just…used too much magic. The side effects are temporary. But I might need help walking, if you’re up for it now. I can’t really see straight.”
“I’ve got you.” Caretaker felt Whumpee against their side, ready to support and direct them.
“I’m so glad you’re okay,” Caretaker said to them. It was more than worth it, to heal their friend.

Something about a whumpee with regenerative powers. No one really takes it seriously when they get injured cause it really will just grow back. Even the whumpee is a bit blasé about their wounds.
But when the team completely ignores them in favor of another teammate’s injuries, not even stopping to give the whumpee pain medicine…
That’s a pain their body can’t fix.

suppression spell that causes excruciating pain every time the victim attempts to use magic
suppression spell that drains away the victim’s power and gives it to the caster
suppression spell that latches on to anyone who tries to help the victim remove it
suppression spell that leaves a mark unique to the caster, showing exactly who overpowered the victim
or that marks the victim with a ring around their neck, displaying their powerlessness for all to see
suppression spell that blocks the flow of magic through the victim’s body like a dam, eventually killing them as the pressure builds and builds
permanent magic-suppression spells :)

Imagine keeping Whumpee in a cursed/magic display case 24/7. They're fed, they don't need to use the restroom, but there's not enough room to lay down, and they're completely deprived of human contact, and even if Whumper completely abandoned them, they can't die while they're in there, but is it really living, when they're trapped behind glass?
I thought about this a lot and I've come to the conclusion that this would be like being bound to an object entirely. Like living in a mirror, or being inside an amulet kept close around someone's neck. Caged, only ever being able to watch, but never even being allowed not to, never being able to sleep, or experience anything themself. All they have is what they see.
It would be indescribable torture to exist like that no matter what. If they are somewhere busy, watching over a street or something, all they can think about is how badly they want to be one of those people, free and happy. Meet with family, have dreams, goals, things to do, food to eat, hobbies to try.
But if they are abandoned, forever locked away somewhere where nobody goes, nothing happens, for years... Imagine setting free a whumpee like that. One that not only hasn't had an ounce of control over their life, but also not even a body to really speak of. How could a whumpee like that live? How would they act around others? How would they know that they need to eat and sleep eventually?
And what if its the worst of both worlds. What if they are fortunate enough to be stuck in a busy space — it's just unlucky that that place is a front row seat to the most demented torture of others, perhaps even people they personally know. They have something to watch, but they wish they didn't, they wish they didn't have to see all the suffering, they wish they could just close their eyes or stop existing altogether.
But also, being put on display is just a whole other flavour of awful. Imagine a fallen king... The kin of a rare species... The snitch... An example... So many reasons they could put somebody on display for, and have others stare at them all day.

Ok but consider. Living weapon whumpee, but instead of a soldier they’re a healer.
A whumpee who was born with immense healing powers, and now every dangerous threat in the world wants them, because if they can’t get hurt, they’re invincible.
Maybe that makes it hard to trust anyone. Whose to say that Caretaker won’t just use them to heal up their wounds like a tool.
Or, do they meet Whumper first. Whumper, who uses them to torture other whumpees, having them healed so they can withstand much more torture from Whumper. Perhaps they’re under threat, or perhaps they’ve lost control of their own body.
The healing process probably hurts the other Whumpees. Having their bones moved around and their cuts closed at a fast rate might not feel so good. Or, it could take ages, and be agonisingly slow. That’s always an option.
Such a strong power surely takes it out of Whumpee too. Do they feel the pain of the person they’re healing? Does it exhaust them to the brink of death? A lot of possibilities there.
Maybe Whumper decides to bring them along on missions. Whumpee is subject to all the horrors of the battlefield, untrained for this and Whumper knows it. But they have to keep it together, or else Whumper will have to stop their tool from malfunctioning, since it’s far too expensive to just replace.
Also consider: Whumpee can only be in one place at a time. That’s not convenient. An easy fix though, if Whumper can just find out what gives Whumpee their powers, soon they can have more and more healing tools in no time. A shame that the experiments will sting just a smidgeon.

aftermath of statue curses
Let's be honest. We all love a good "Turned to stone" or "Turned to ice" curse right? The angst of a caretaker finding a whumpee like that is just *Chef's Kiss* so good. But we're really snoozing on the aftermath. of what happens to poor Whumpee when the curse is broken. Seriously;
Atrophy or weakness of the muscles.
Gravel Rash everywhere. (for the stone curse)
Frostbite EVERYWHERE (for an Ice curse)
frequently recurring chills (both, Stone is still cold y'all.)
incredible disorientation or dizziness.
coming out of the statue starved and dehydrated.
Whumpee collapses into Caretaker's arms the minute the curse is broken.
Coughing up particles of whatever they were encased in.
Whumpee is desperate for the Caretaker not to leave them, ever. Especially if they were somewhat conscious inside the statue

How to Ignore Magical Healing
One of the things I encounter often in media or when writing is the existence of magic, and therefore healing spells. In most magic systems, it renders long-term whump, recovery, or even classic medical tending unnecessary, or just irrelevant. That can be discouraging and uninspiring at times.
We can’t all choose what world The Blorbo™ heralds from, so sometimes we get stuck with a universe that complicates the whump instinct. So, here are some prompts for avoiding magical healing in your whumping!
Tumblr media
Wound-based
Prompts that prevent wounds from healing
It’s Just TOO Bad: Uh oh, the healing isn’t working because the wound itself is too bad to fix
Unnatural Origins: The healing isn’t working because the wound itself isn’t natural and so cannot be healed by magical means OR the whumpee is inhuman/the in-universe equivalent, and the magic doesn’t recognize them as something that can be healed (robots, aliens, vampires, etc)
Ailments: The Whumpee has a curse/illness (like the Malady effect in Metaphor: ReFantazio) preventing them from healing at all, so that ailment must be cured before they can heal up
Prior Requirements: Something must be done before a healing spell can be cast (removing a bullet so it doesn’t fester, stitching the wound so it can heal smoothly)
Poison: The weapon was laced with a poison that, amongst its many effects, is preventing any healing magic from reaching the wound
Tumblr media
Situation-based
Prompts to stop your party from casting because of the predicament they’re in
Exhaustion: The party is already at their limits, and they can’t afford another healing spell OR the party doesn’t want to spend anymore magic until it’s absolutely necessary OR The party has already used all of the items in their disposal that provide magical healing (like life stones in SMT)
Prevention: The party cannot reach Whumpee to heal them (barriers, cells, or perhaps the party is otherwise occupied by fighting?)
Dangerous Territory: If the party were to stop and heal Whumpee, they would waste precious time/make too much noise/put themselves in a bad place, so Whumpee has to make it a little further before they can fix the problem
Fear Response: Whumpee has prior poor experiences with magic or healing, and is refusing treatment for as long as they can hold out OR whumpee is magically convinced the party is going to hurt them (fear effects, brainwashing, feeblemind spell in D&D)
Magic Nullification: Magic isn’t allowed (a tournament) or possible (area of effect magic prevention) and the team must make do without
Tumblr media
Universe-based
Prompts to engineer/alter the universal requirements to stop magical healing
Risky Measures: Healing spells rely on the wounded person’s energy. If a powerful spell is cast on a poorly off Whumpee, it could use the last of Whumpee’s energy, and kill them
Exchange Theory: Any pain healed on Whumpee is transferred to the person casting the healing spell OR the wound itself is transferred onto someone else
Fine Print: This particular healing spell requires a very specific item (like diamonds in resurrection for D&D) and the team has to find/buy it before they can heal the whumpee
It Just Hurts: Healing spells don’t include pain relief, so when casted, Whumpee can feel every part of their wounds healing (like bones readjusting or flesh stretching)
They Don’t Exist: Healing spells themselves don’t exist, and instead creative ways of wound care are invented like slowing down blood flow or encouraged immune system responses
Tumblr media
Final notes
Something you can play with here is if the characters have never practiced first aid! Your caretakers might have no idea how to pack a wound or splint a fracture. Lots of mistakes and tension can grow from there.
Don’t be afraid to alter the universe you’re writing in. Fuck it up, really. There’s something enchanting about adding specific rules in a given world. Adding those requirements gives depth you can play in as a sandbox. Or you can throw the team into a completely different universe, if that’s your fancy!
And remember: you never need to write it realistically. Ignore the healing spells, throw the whumpee in a no-magic AU, hell, just take healing away from those specific people to prevent it–do whatever you want, whatever seems interesting, and have fun doing it. There’s no need to make it seamless. Make it bloody first.
Now, go beat the shit out of your blorbos.
Love yall!

When whumpee has expended all of their power and is crumpled on the ground, hoping, praying that it was enough to stop whumper from getting them. And then, when the smoke clears, whumper is standing there, uninjured. Whumper squats in front of whumpee and holds their head up by their cheeks and whumpee is doing everything in their power to stay awake. "are you done?"

Defiant Whumpees and Control Magic
It is a wonderful concept
A team leader getting influenced by some unknown power in the middle of a fight. They Go against it but can't hear their teammates warnings anymore. Thus getting struck by a physical enemy.
A Whumpee struggling to stay on their feet even though every muscle in their body screams to kneel.
Them Walking around like in a drunk daze. Everything is slow, noises are distorted and The sway with every step while they head into a general direction that awaits them, meanwhile they try to figure Out another way they can Take. Internally screaming at themself to Stop.
Headaches, or other physical pain increasing with every Second they go against the control. They are in pain, barely able to move without cramping or toppling over. But it's Worth it to Not betray their cause.

‪‪♡‬ Febuwhump 2025 Day 6: Forced to Stay Awake ‪‪♡‬
Or: Mage whumpee forced to stay awake to keep up a magic barrier so all of their friends don't die a horrible death.
˚ʚ♡ɞ˚
“Stay with me, Whumpee. You have to keep going.”
Whumpee’s whole body trembles, their hands outstretched over a glowing circle of runes, fingers twitching as golden light pulses from their palms. Their vision swims, their limbs feel like stone, and their thoughts are slow, sluggish things. How many hours has it even been?
Too many.
“I-I can’t,” they choke out, their words slow and slurred. The magic is icy cold inside their chest, sapping every ounce of energy they can muster. Their head lolls forward, and it’s only thanks to a strong pair of hands that they manage to stay in their kneeling position instead of slumping to the floor.
“You have to,” Caretaker says, their voice firm. “No pressure, Whumpee, but we all die if you let go of this barrier.”
Whumpee forces their eyes open. A shimmering golden dome surrounds their little group, and on the other side they can see shadowy figures clawing at its surface, dark tendrils slamming against it with enough force to shake the ground beneath them.
Caretaker’s right. If they fall asleep, everyone dies.
But they’re so, so tired.
A shudder wracks their body. They’re running on sheer force of will now. Everything else was burned out hours ago. It’s not enough. It was never going to be enough. They’re just one mage, and not even a particularly powerful one, and they don’t even know for sure that help is on the way.
Whumpee sobs, shaking their head. They don’t want to be the reason no one makes it home. But they just can’t keep this up.
Caretaker puts a firm hand on their shoulder. “Whumpee. Breathe.”
They suck in a gasping breath.
“Good. Again. Just focus on breathing.”
Another breath. Their head swims. They can’t even see straight anymore. The runes flicker.
“Come on! Stay awake!”
Whumpee barely hears them. Their thoughts have dissolved into static.
Sleep. Just a few minutes of rest-
A sharp pain jolts them back. Caretaker had pinched the delicate skin of their wrist hard, leaving a little purple mark.
“Focus!” Caretaker’s voice wavers - maybe fear, maybe guilt. “Just a little longer!”
“I… I can’t! Stop it!”
“You can sleep as much as you want when this is over, I promise. But for now you’re staying awake, even if I have to force you.”
