How works? Everybody is born with 1 of the 13 Magics(there is Null aka 14 but thats both hard to confirm and typically is ‘masking’ a second magic that is of the 13 so most just think it took them practice to awaken magic)
There’s normally no defining mark of what magic at birth, but it is genetic(i’ll go over the Dominant vs Resesive later) so if both parents share a Base group(Nature, Element, Create, or ‘Gather’) the kid is like 80% likely to also fall into it.
By 10 years there are enough signs of the kids' magic to solidify what magic they got. Difficult cultures have ways of handling it. Some Tattoo the kids with the Head and Sub group marks, others give the people articles or Set wardrobe, and others don’t care besides on Documents.

Something i noticed about Big Three power’s
Demigods who are not big three have their gifts coming from inside themselves, directly from there body or genetic makeup. Leo’s fire is made from him its part of him, Pipers charm speak is something innate she can do, Will needs physical contact for his vitalkinisis because it comes from his body.
Big Three kids on the other hand are manipulating the world around them, they are in-tune with an outer element that they are controlling. Percy is directly manipulating water that is already there not making his own, Hazel is pulling gems from that earth beneath her, Jason controls air around him to fly its not something his body can just do
The only exception of this is can think of is Nico and Shadow Travel, and it is the only Big Three gift that is shown to negatively affect them physically past just getting tired.
#just somthing interesting ive been thinking about#i like world building and magic systems#i think its cool how much this others big three kids#big three#pjo#jason grace#leo valdez#pjo hoo toa#percy jackson#nico di angelo#will solace#talk

First Draft on Major Magic Types and Magic Sub-classes
Within the world of Seasonal Decay there are five Major Magic Types, every character within the world has one or more type depending on race.
These classes and their sub-classifications are as follows:
Divine Magic with its sub-classes being in order Contract, Detection, Divination, Healing and Warding.
People who have Divine Magic can harness one of the sub-classes. Whether it is predicting and/or manipulating future outcomes, restoring vitality or guarding people and objects from corruption, Divine Magic is the most highly respected Magic type in the world of Seasonal Decay. However, it is in only 12% of bloodlines.
Elemental Magic with its sub-classes in order are Alchemy, Destruction, Elements, Luck and Survival.
Elemental Magic encompasses magic pertaining to the aspects of the natural world. Such as the basics like Fire, Earth, Water and Air, to far more complex aspects such as manipulation of chance, fortune and survivability. This magic type is the most common with a 54% chance.
Infernal Magic and its sub-classes in order are Banishment, Concealment, Curse and Necro.
This is the rarest Magic Type with only an 8% chance of showing up in a bloodline. That and its less then pleasant nature give users of Infernal Magic a bad reputation. Not much is known about all uses of this magic, or if they are well known they are not shared outside of those who hold this Magic Type.
Mental Magic and its sub-classes in order are Communication, Control, Dream, and Illusion.
People with Mental Magic range from being able to relay messages through vast distances, walk through the minds of others in sleep, create imagery that isn't there and control the thoughts of others. Though some have suggested that Control Magic could branch off into it's own sub-sections, but further research is needed. This type only has a 10% chance of appearing.
Lastly is Physical Magic and it's sub-classes which are Altercation, Defense, Enhancement, Sensory and Transformation.
The second most common magic type with 16%, Physical Magic pertains to the ability to create shields and barriers, temporarily disguises, permanent changes of the flesh and heightening senses and attributes.

I am absolutely obsessed with how Sammie is shot in this scene in comparison to his father. It's directly tied into a tl;dr I have about both how Christianity is treated in this film and how the magic system works in this story and so, while at some point I might write a whole ass blog post (or even an academic paper) in the future, here's the cliffnote word vomit version of why I think this is so fucking cool:
So basically, this film frames Christianity as one of the villains of the story (along with the white-liberalism-culture-vampires and the Klan), and heavily implies that what Sammie's dad wants from him is the same as what Remmick wants from him: to be used for the power of his music and subsumed into a soulless, cultureless whole. Where Sammie is lit in warm tones and dressed in warm colors, backdropped by green nature, his dad is lit in very stark cool tones with minimal contrast so he's almost in monochrome, surrounded only by the empty whiteness of the chapel. This film very clearly delivers a thesis that Christianity is a real-world culture-vampire that white people inflicted on the Black community, from the way Sammie's dad is shot and lit to look like the vampires do in this film, from Delta Slim's clear delineation that the blues isn't like that "religion they forced on us", to the way that Sammie's return to the chapel at the start and finish is intercut with scenes of Remmick. These flashes of Remmick and the horrors of that night that are cut into Sammie's dad telling him to repent and drop the guitar are the catalyst for Sammie leaving, because he figures it out. And in part he figured it out BECAUSE of the second thing that is fascinating, and that is basically the consistency of the magic system.
Basically, the magic system in this movie is antithetical to Christianity as a whole.
I'm going to preface this by saying that when I talk about Annie's hoodoo I'm NOT talking about real world hoodoo, which I know nothing about. I'm just talking about how the film presents hoodoo, and how the film presents the fae, and how these things all function within the same cohesive magic system.
Annie's Hoodoo, Sammie's music, and the Vampires are all diametrically opposed to Christianity, and are all within the realm of Faërie magic.
So when I say Faerie I don't mean specifically the sidhe, though the sidhe are part of Faerie. By Faerie magic I mean specifically the magic of the natural world, which is often ancestral, and often associated with an Otherworld that is still part of the World itself but is greater than humans. This is as opposed to sorcery (man-made magic) or heavenly/satanic (abrahamic/usually christian magic). When I say the entire magic system is Faërie it is because the Vampires are very CLEARLY laid out as Faërie, while Sammie's magic and Annie's Hoodoo are all part of the same consistent system of magic, laid out right at the start.
So basically right from the very first scene the film puts West African magic, Choctaw magic and ancient Irish magic as existing within the same frame of reality. All three have a concept of the magical singer, and all three (we later find out) know about vampires. It establishes that these all function in the same magic system, which is the Reality of this Secondary World. What is real for one group in this magic system is real for all of them. They may use different language to talk about the same thing, but the concepts are the same across the board in this universe. We're just talking about fictional secondary world magic system building here, and consistent storytelling, not real world understandings of these things.
the vampires are the most clearly Fae creatures (and by this I don't mean Fairies, but creatures associated with Faërie--imo they're like Changelings in that they were once human and then become Fae). Remmick is ancient Irish, out here singing Irish folk songs and handing gold coins to people at a crossroads, saying that the gold comes from an ancient place but it's no use to Mary while she's "alive" (human and not of the fae). It's super on-the-nose almost to the point of being irish stereotype caricature. I'll come back to him.
Annie's Hoodoo is never outright put in opposition to Christianity, but it's significant that she is not a mixed practitioner. There are no clear icons or crosses in her home. The grave marker for their dead child is not a cross but a carved African figure, which is very significant in 1930s Mississippi. She is solely a hoodoo practitioner, who lives in a ramshackle cottage in the words selling magical/natural cures. She's very witch-in-the-wood coded, but is never ever presented as wicked or evil. She's also the only spiritual figure in the film that can be trusted, and she is trusted implicitly. She is also the one who understands the consistency of the magic systems, as the teller of the intro tale and as the one who knows how to fight the vampires. This includes throwing NOT holy water on them, but garlic pickling juice. Crosses are also never used in her instructions on how to push them away (a very common vampire trope), just garlic, silver, fire, and stakes. I would also argue that Smoke's death scene with her and the baby is NOT heavenly, it's just afterlife coded (because white is generally the afterlife color code for visual media). Again, no angels, no heavenly coding, just afterlife coding. You COULD argue that she's virgin mary coded in this scene because she's breastfeeding, but we did see her actively have sex on screen earlier so that's tenuous at best. It's also shot with that same warped camera affect that happens whenever the mojo bag is in-use.
Then there is the Music. Music in general is a very common magical device in Faërie magic, and Tolkien is like the king of this: music holds power than the spoken word does not, music is the truest art of creating enchantment, this secondary world that the fae can produce, a fully realized enchanted art form. tl;dr there's a lot here but that's the cliffnotes version. Delta Slim outright says that the music is brought with them from home, rather than being forced upon them like Christianity. Sammie's music is what Sammie's dad wants to stamp out of him, or at least use to his limited means. It's Sammie's connection to the music that makes him a sinner in his father's eyes. But this is really hammered home in the final scene between Remmick and Sammie and then Sammie and his dad.
So I don't actually think Remmick's final monologue is supposed to be a final villain monologue so much as a final exposition monologue. I think the final villain monologue is Sammie's dad trying to compel him with the power of Christ, based on story structure. Generally speaking, a final villain monologue is supposed to be the peak of their evil plan, which is then foiled and shown to be wrong by the actions of the heroes. That's not exactly what Remmick's final speech does. In the final speech, Remmick explains that Christianity is the reason his culture is dead (and so the reason for the culture vampire void that needs to be filled), but he also says the following:
"They told stories of a heaven above and a devil below, and lies about the dominion of man over heaven and earth. We are earth and beast and God. We are woman and man. We are connected, you and I, to everything."
*if* this was a classic villain finale monologue, the response to this would have been "oh look this weird anti-christian pagan creature is monologuing, so he's evil, and the church is good and correct and the Truth", but that isn't how the film ends. Instead, the Remmick looks into the sunrise and hears the call of the Otherworld and his people (rather than say, heaven, because it's given that same Faerie irish lilt) but instead the music turns and he goes up in horrible flames for his crimes. UP in flames, up into the sky, which is NOT Christian for a "demon" to do in death (because he's not a demon, he's fae, Sammie calls him the devil repeatedly because he hasn't figured this out yet). The film "ends" (prior to the epilogue) with Sammie remembering the torment he went through from these vampires, after hearing this monologue, while at the church with his father trying to compel him to join *his* coven/clan/flock, and Sammie realizing that what his father is doing to him is this same repeated cycle of violence that happened to Remmick and that Remmick was trying to repeat onto him, and LEAVES.
Because of this, I think those lines above are not the typical final villain monologue, but the final bit of exposition that tells the audience the truth: that Sammie's magic and Remmick's magic (and Annie's magic as the one spiritual figure of the bunch) are all connected, you and I, to everything, with no dominion of man over heaven and earth. It establishes the magic system as consistent, and diametrically opposed to Christianlity
Faerie is morally neutral, it is the magic-of-the-World rather than of a moral dichotomy. It can be revelatory and healing, and it can be seductive and destructive. Annie and Sammie's magic is Good, and the Vampires are Evil, but they are all together diametrically opposed to the Church.
This is why the framing of Sammie and his dad in that opening scene is so fascinating, because behind Sammie is the natural world, warm and vibrant and welcoming, and behind his dad is man-made emptiness and shadow. Title of the film says it all, this film is ABOUT the so-called Sinners, the un-Christians. And that's not presented as a bad thing to be at all, but a truly magical thing, and that being a Sinner is joyous activity.
#sinners 2025#sinners#Ryan Coogler has read On Fairy Stories by JRR Tolkien I'm telling you#He understands Faerie and secondary world magic system building#this is the short version of this btw like I can go into so much detail about how this is done in this movie and its fascinating#dont even get me started about how the river scene is visually set up to be a baptism but is never actually allowed to be a baptism#its designed to unsettle expectations#genre fiction storytelling is the best#every time i rewatch im like ok so Sammies dad is a vampire (metaphorical)#the visuals are SO SO CLEAR#lemme tell you as a jew knowledgeable about the history of the oppressive force of christianity against my own people this was A+ to see

~ *despite the effects of the river water's effects wearing off, it still felt... something different inside of it's metal body. Something strange and warm flowing through it's wiring, something like electricity and yet it was... not?* ~
#the river water accidentally gave zeta a bit of the flavor of magic that the ferryman's universe has#Which acts a lot like electricity but more or less comes from pretty much everywhere#as it comes from any kind of energy being lost#so it replenishes naturally and slowly!#might do some magic system building in the discord

IMPORTANT: the magic/sigils system used in this au (specifically the symbols themselves) is original- it's something i pulled directly from my oc's universe because i didn't want to make a whole new elemental magic system. that being said, outside the context of this au, PLEASE DON'T USE IT! i have other plans for my oc project eventually, and i'd like to keep the system within the realm of my work
and here we go!

I want a magic system that slowly drains its users. Like magic drugs but they aren't the fun kind of drug but the life ruining kind. Magic users will slowly grow paler, their weight will drop at unhealthy rates, dark marks will form around eyes that slowly seem eternally bloodshot. As time goes on they lose reproductive function, and start feeling either constantly awake or needing to sleep more. Someone who begins practicing magic in their teens will not see forty.
You're so powerful but at what cost. You're bodies wasting away, and the younger you start the better. If you stopped now mabye you could heal... but it feels so good to become something like that, something more powerful then humanity was meant to know.
Anyone want to just totally ruin their life when they become a wizard?

One of the dominant models of magic and superheroes is that everyone has their "thing", what I would call a bespoke magic system, but is mostly just a power that sits orthogonal to all other powers. This crops up all the time, because it's really really good for having dynamic fights, for characterizing people through their powers, for having new surprises and twists, and just generally keeping things going.
It's adaptable to all kinds of genres. Superheroes are the obvious one, whether it's canonized as Quirks or just an aspect of the setting. But I'm pretty sure that the basic concept was first invented in anime, with marital arts settings, where every character had their own jutsu or whatever, or the system in theory is all about ki manipulation or equivalent exchange but in practice everyone has their own particular niche. You can slot this into urban fantasy, giving every vampire their own special Power, or you can have some magical fantasy thing where everyone has their own unique Semblance.
So this is all well and good, but it leaves us with a narrative hole, which is progression. Having a unique power is cool, because you can think of new uses for it, have unique matchups, etc., but it doesn't give you that juicy sense of becoming more, and if you're facing down terrifying villains with their own powers, then a god-tier power is just kind of ... random. Luck of the draw, rather than the consequence of a powerful will or keen mind.
You can strip out limitations and amplify effects, and this is cool and good, or you can lean back away from uniqueness and toward uniformity, which I think is sometimes the right call, depending on your narrative needs.
So you say that actually the guy who can swap places with someone and the guy who can cut people from a distance are both unwitting hyperspecialists in the same field of magic or whatever, and that in theory, with unlimited time to train and experiment and explore, each could do what the other does.
This allows for a lot of snazzy narrative stuff. Two intense rivals "learn" each other's techniques, or at least adapt them into their own technique. Maybe the guy who does teleport swaps never learns to cut from a distance, but his teleport swap incorporates a cut into it, slashing at the person he's trading places with. A widower incorporates aspects of his dead wife's power, a mentor passes down elements of his technique to all his students, a young protagonist has some angst about using the aspect he got from his abusive father, etc.
If powers are a reflection of character, then you get to physically manifest a character's relationship with other people.

Crafting Future From Ruins: A Writer's Guide to Designing Post-Apocalyptic Technology

Photo: Standard License- Adobe Stock
Crafting post-apocalyptic tech involves blending creativity and realism. This is a guide to help you invent tech for your post-apocalyptic world:
Tinker, Tailor, Writer, Spy: Start with modern tech. Take it apart (conceptually or literally if you're feeling adventurous). Using the basics, think of how your character might put it back together with limited tools and resources.
Master the Fundamentals: Understand the basic principles underlying the tech you're working with. Physics, chemistry, and biology can be your best friends. This understanding can guide your character's resourceful innovations.
Embrace the Scrapyard: The world around you has potential tech components. Appliances, vehicles, infrastructure - how could these be deconstructed and repurposed? Your characters will need to use what's at hand.
Cherishing Old Wisdom: Pre-apocalypse books and manuals are the new internet. A character with access to this knowledge could become a vital asset in tech-building.

Listen you can't just give me new lore and expect me not to ask ESPECIALLY if it involved magic system
Does the rune you clicked with matched the kind of person you are? Like someone who is caring will click with a protection rune or a healing rune or is it based on how willing the person is to learn it?
In the ye olden days how does one know which rune they would click with like do they just try different runes and if they don't click with they moved on to a different rune? Imagine an expert just throws a bunch of runes to a baby sorcerer and be like “here try this runes and tell me how you feel about it”
If someone who studies history found that Stan's a sorcerer, what would be their reaction? And is it a shock Pikachu face?
Is magic reserve something you're born with? Or can you expand it?
Tldr : more lore! More lore! More lore! More lore! ✊✊✊
You've fallen into my trap of asking me to elaborate so i can talk more about my magic world building >:)
The first initial click will always match the type of person a sorcerer is. Stan views himself as someone who breaks things and messes stuff up, so he was drawn to the break rune (plus all the writing it over and over. Its not a necessary step but it does make it easier and speed up the process) in different circumstances he could have also clicked with the sneak, protect, illusion, or anything else that fits Stan. After that a sorcerer can technically click with any rune, as long as they work to understand it. Stan doesn't care about plants or growing things in a garden, so he's struggling.
In ye olden days as long as they knew someone had the chance to become a sorcerer they could guess which runes they'd click with. Unfortunately there wasn't a guarantee someone would click at all, even if they did have a larger magic reserve. Potential sorcerers could go to specilized schools to try and click through rune writing and doing rune activities (such as going around a castle and breaking everything they came across *coughStancough*) but its not something that can be forced (without messing the person up). There was also the chance that people would randomly become sorcerers going about their day to day lives, like how the woman Fiddleford knew clicked with the dance rune and started using it on everyone. People were taught to look for certain signs (doing a certain action over and over again, looking exhausted, zoning out, etc (which can be written off as truama)) so that if they saw their neighbor or someone they knew they could take steps in case it was a potential sorcerer clicking.
Once the first click happened baby sorcerers were taken to isolated facilities and thrown a bunch of runes and pushed through rune activities until they clicked with at least three more, after which they were free to go home or continue rune learning. They'd interview loved ones and the sorcerer to figure out what would work best, and go from there. If something didnt click after three days they'd move on (Due to rushing the process to stabilize the baby sorcerer. If Stan had been shoved writing the rune he's about to click with over and he'd click with it faster than he has been.) Stan's learning his runes in the classic fashion of doing activities and watching the world around him, which works but is very slow.
If someone who studied history and knew about sorcerers as a concept seperate from wizards learned about Stan there would be a new person living in the castle becoming Stans #1 pest. You know the type, eager to learn and watch and the exact type of person that would creep Stan out, even if they were doing it for purly academic reasons. Stan's a living relic of a long forgotten magic art, and they're going to rediscover the limits of his capabilities together :) (Stan would rather not. Please leave? He has enough problems with the dragon, demon, and McGuckets health worries)
Magic reserves are something people are born with and something that can grow over time. Everyone has a little bit of magic in them that keeps them alive and naturally connects them to magic in a non sorcerer fashion, and some are born with larger magic reserves due to blood line factors. Its similar to a muscle, the more its used the bigger it is, so weak sorcerers can get stronger the more they cast spells and push their limits. Or it can artificially grow, like if someone carries an arcane battery in their pocket and rolls it around with their bare hands while it leaks magic straight into them (but who'd be crazy enough to do that! There's all kinds of side effects from non controlled magic exposure!)
There's also a hierarchy of runes. The lowest tier is grammar and filler runes, that don't have any special innate ability to shape reality. Like how shouting the word 'the!' at someone doesnt really convey meaning. After that it goes from very specific runes, like water, to more complex ones, like liquid. Stan's first one was a complex one, as 'break' covers a whole lot more than just learning 'snap'. There's lots of ways to break something, but only so many ways you can snap. The limits of a sorcerer's ability is their magic reserve and their imagination, so Stan, who's mental ability is so strong he's a natural mindscape manipulator, has a lot of potential for being very powerful, even if by ye olden days standards he'd have a less than average sorcerer's reserve (another good thing for Fiddlefords arm). A sorcerer can 'upgrade' their clicked rune into a higher tier by doing it a lot and deepening their understanding.

Fic idea! When jayce and viktor disolve into the cosmos they like...become the arcane. Two halves of a whole, yin and yang. And when they merge, they become the universe/arcane herself.
Cause Mage viktor is...a mage yk? And Viktor basically ascended to godhood. What's one more step? Boom, they ARE the fabric of the universe and magic.
So they dissolve into the universe and become AwareTM of every timeline, possibilities, the forming of stars and planets, and culture in an instant. They see the rise and fall of gods, countries and cities, everything in the span of an instant. They are here together, not better than they ever were, still the same, just with more power and awareness and love than they ever had.
And then they get dropped right into them being arrested after they make hextech. So now you have Jayce and Viktor who have the will of the arcane at their fingertips and the entire universe in their brains that have just been dropped into a grad student and an assistant and are actively being arrested. Cue minor meltdowns in their cell bec omfg we wove the fabric of the universe, WE made the magic this whole time? So they use the skills they have to help Zaun while also playing the council. Water filters air filters, they're going to actually help this time instead of letting their dream be corrupted, and it will actually work bec they have the very fabric of magic and the universe in their hands. When they figure out how to use it.
Jayce has to relearn all of his notes on magic bec Cosmic Jayce was crazy and some areas of magic have such insane rules that cant even be applied in his mortal body what was he thinking? And Viktors notes are no more help to himself or jayce either.
So they have to relearn their magic with mortal limitations, which is kinda difficult when you're used to making stars and black holes with a thought and a wave of your hand. There's a lot of nosebleeds and migranes.
While they relearn their magic (and their bodies *wink wonk*), they also take to tutoring Powder and Ekko after they adopt them (sue me, i love that trope)
Idk how that fits in here, but im a sucker for Jayce being ekkos older brother figure, and i think powder and jayce should be friends. and i think viktor would love ekko even though he chucked an anomaly at his face. Jinx and viktor are self-explanatory.
Its a fix it so everyone lives. The explosion still happened but vanders actually fine so are mylo and claggor (yk jayce and viktor control the magic, even across the distancehe could remive the magic from the stone, they know the explosion has to happen but it doesnt need to kill anyone else), vi didnt get arrested. But vi still hit powder and called her a jinx. Powder runs away, jayce and viktor are already on their way to zaun bec they Know. They run into powder (for some reason she trusts them) and they go get ekko and help him too.
A few months later, powder is in therapy (so is ekko tbh) , she still introuces herself to people as Jinx, but Jayce, Viktor, and Ekko call her powder. Jayce helps when Powder has her moments considering yeah hes been through the same thing, he cant really hwlp, but he can comfort (the whole reason i want then in the same place anyway i love them both)
Zaundads sees Jayce and Viktor standing to the side, vut a flash of blue hair catches their full attention. Right there, getting everones attention, is a girl with a single calf length blue braid. And before their brains can catch up, Powder starts her presentation!
Vander and Vi have been looking for powder since. Eventually, once the water filters and air filters get made, Silco and Vander make up; and silco joins them in searching. Jayce and viktor have made their own connections in zaun, and while some people are suspicious of help from a piltie at the start (esp silco and vander) the years of effort theyve put in to help has given them a reputation. Eventually, powder and ekko start a project to bring more light to zaun. They start by making prototypes for street lights.
Eventually they decide to do their big project reveal; and this time, Zaundads and Vi decide to go. No one knows what they're revealing, but they've never had a presentation this early. Hell, the last presentation was for their streetlights. What else could the possibly have?
When it's finished, powder leaps off her improvised stage and striaght into jayces arms where he spins her around. Then, he pulls her and ekko into hugs. They can faintly hear Jayces 'im so proud of you' over the loud murmurs of the crowd. They see viktor come over and eatch them all hug again.
When it's over, Zaundads and Vi are watching in shock. They've spent years looking for her, and she was this close? How many times had vi run past her, or just missed her?
This was really supposed to be a 'we need more jayce being a magical girl, how about i make him one half of the most powerful entity to ever exist'

write more sapiosexual characters-characters who are romantically attracted to intelligence above all else. why? because you can recognize someone as intelligent and respect them for that, while simultaneously thinking of them as a jerkwad.

what do you MEAN different people had different densities of chakra??
CHAKRA HAS DENSITY??
KAKASHI'S CLAN IS KNOWN FOR THEIR SUPER DENSE CHAKRA???
DOES THAT MEAN U CAN HAVE VERY THIN CHAKRA??
If kakashi's dense chakra allows him to use less chakra to preform jutsu, then thin chakra would require more of it. does this mean that there is a weight to chakra?
I'm sobbing on the floor, since when did fanfic writing require an understanding of physics?
#world building#naruto#naruto fanfiction#help#magic system#im dying here#sakura haruno#does she have dense or thin?#can't be as dense as a hatake cus thats their special trait??#how dense can it possibly be?

Here’s my take on elemental magic systems. Usually I like having powers but they should come at a cost somehow. Yes you can learn it or use special items. But when it comes to casting spells. It should take some kinda toll on your body. Or even cause major injuries/chronic issues if use unsafely. Why can’t everyone just use magic? Because it can a dangerous tool that requires years of practice in order for your body to withstand it safely.
So here’s my lore dump
Elemental magic in alignment world is tied to one’s emotions/mental state. These emotions can both be negative or positive. Overtime the elements can physically affect the person not only mentally but emotionally. This can lead to people either embracing their magic, or falling to it.
Each type of magic needs both a physical/mental source of fuel. Most of the time, it involves a particular emotion but it can also include literal food in your stomach, muscle mass, mental energy and sometimes even memories
While there’s a variety of magic types, I’ll only talk about the 3 main ones. Lightning, fire, and water
Lightning
Lightning magic stems from the fear and the instinct to survive. Electricity in your body will react to make your stronger, faster. The adrenaline rush of when you’re in danger. Imagine this but take it up a notch. Through various means you can generate energy in your body to shoot our electricity or control your adrenaline to be temporary stronger or faster.
Side effects:
However, using this magic can result in a high tensed sense of anxiety/fear, your heart rate will increased, ADHD might be present, perception of time might feel slower than usual. Your body will also be of high risk of paralysis if the magic is used too much.
Panic attacks are also not fun with lightning magic. When your body is overloaded with magic and electricity your brain and body will be overwhelmed to a point it cannot function properly and you will think you are dying.
Lore
As long as you balanced your mental and physical health along with your magical use, you’ll be fine!
Lore wise, lightning magic is a tool that isn’t used often. Given the physical risks and lack of electronic based technology. The rare few who do practice this magic are often wealthy or desperate enough to get the speed boost to escape.
Lightning magic mixed with water can be used to form storms but I’ll cover that in a bit

Fire
Fire magic stems from anger and passion. The drive to create, the drive to change. The frustration towards a higher power or the wrong order at wackdonalds. Fire magic is more basic compared to other elements. You can create fire, use it like a flamethrower. Your body naturally runs hot and slowly it develops to be more resistant to heat. On a higher technical skill, you can also control the intensity of preexisting flames and can alter flames so they don’t cause burns or even light, or you can heat up specific items without lighting them aflame.
When you create magical fire, you must use something as fuel. This can be a physical item like wood, but in order to control it the fuel must be mental. Physically energy is the most common fuel, as well as emotional energy.
To create certain effects, specific emotions or even memories must be triggered. Depending on the emotion, it creates different effects
Anger/frustration: very blatant. Can increase the intensity and temperature of a fire.
Nostalgic: Can warm up item to a small degree, not to burn. It often smells sweet. Can also make fire not cause burns. Is used in cooking/baking. It’s the safe kind of fire. And one often used around kids when teaching magic at a young age.
Passion: very colorful, can alter the color of fire and also it’s size and brightness. Often used by performers.
Keep in mind not all of these categories are completely seperate. The types can easily overlap. The temperature of a flame can alter the color. The flame can become brighter but also not cause harm.
Sideffects
Burnout is the most common illness that takes place. Your body is overheated and is just exhausted.
Genuine burns are also a common thing that happens, it is fire after all.
If left unchecked, their body can be dry, if not thin a frail. Magical fire also fuels on muscle mass. Plus fire is also execptionally dry. So get some lotion.
Also depending on the “fuel” you use, that emotion, you’ll feel on a more constant basis. You might feel more frustrated than usually at smaller things. Suddenly passionate and enthralled in oridinary/repetive tasks. You feel nostalgic/bittersweet towards every item that reminds you of the past.
Lore
Fire magic is one of the most common forms of magic and can even be taught at a young age with a lot of adult supervision. Fire is a necessity for life after all! It’s often a wizard’s first spell, casting a small flame or creating light.

Water
Water magic stems from grief, saddness, but also calm. Specifically staying calm in times of crisis.
This type of magic that can’t physically be create. The spell “create water” is more “transform into water.” Snow will melt, steam will cool, and water from other sources will gather where you want.
Magic is less creating, more manipulating what’s already there. While emotions do play a role in harnessing this kind of magic, it’s not as strictly needed given you aren’t creating that magic.
It doesn’t mean there isn’t any consequences
Sideffects
Dehydration is very common. Part of the water in your body is used when casting spells. So make sure you have a water skin at all times! It’s also common to be teary eyed or sweaty. Your body constantly making water just in case you need to use it. Mental health is also a pretty big thing. Since this magic can stem from grief and sadness, this type of magic can tend to consume you if left unchecked.
Lore
Though not as popular as fire magic, water magic is quite common among coastal towns. I mean the ocean is literally right there! Ironically sailors don’t use it given it leaves the user rather dehydrated and unless you’re extremely skilled, you can’t immediately control the tides/waves. Besides, it always a good idea trying to control what beneath the waves. They aren’t too friendly

Mixing magics.
Magic isn’t completely catagorized and separated. Like emotions, there’s overlap. And magics can be combined to create different effects. Leading to several combinations.
Water+lightning=Storms
How to you combine fear and sadness! A stormy mess! While weather spells/rainstorms can be used with only water magic. If you want to make a thunder storm, you use both magics! (This is the magic Jasmine uses)
Water+Fire=steam/winds
Winds basically stems from differences in temperatures. So by combining these 2 elements, you can create strong winds and produce steam. Steam is pretty painful it the temperature is high enough.
Fire+lightning=explosions
Things go boom. Use wisely
