Another vital distinction between the arts of painting and mosaic is the fact that mosaic is comprised only of blocks of pure colour. Any blending or gradation of colour or tone must be made by optical means. Colour is not achieved by the simple matching the colour desired with a single tesserae, but through the placing of pure blocks of colour next to each other.
