"The planet Mars is home to thick layers of clay that can span hundreds of feet. Since they need water to form, these outcrops have long been of interest to scientists looking for signs of past life on the red planet.
In a new study published in Nature Astronomy, scientists from The University of Texas at Austin and collaborators took a closer look at these clay terrains and found that most formed near standing bodies of surface water, which were common on Mars billions of years ago. This environment would help foster the chemical weathering needed to create thick, mineral-rich layers of clay and could have provided the right mix of water, minerals and a calm environment for life to develop.
"These areas have a lot of water but not a lot of topographic uplift, so they're very stable," said the study's lead author Rhianna Moore, who conducted the research as a postdoctoral fellow at the UT Jackson School of Geosciences. "If you have stable terrain, you're not messing up your potentially habitable environments. Favorable conditions might be able to be sustained for longer periods of time.""
"The researchers noted that the thick clays could also be a sign of an imbalanced water and carbon cycle on ancient Mars, which could explain why Mars appears to be missing carbonate rocks in environments where they would be expected on Earth.
Billions of years ago, Mars was a wet world. It had lakes and rivers, which created geological formations that are carved on the surface of the planet today. The thick clay layers formed during this wet period. However, before this study, little was known about the environments in which they formed and how the surrounding terrain influenced their evolution."

John Gaius is really the stupidest motherfucker on the planet cause he was working in cryogenics to save the Earth and the Earth gives him magic to Make People Survive Long Term Cryogenics and then he spends months faffing around with his two pet cadavers and live-streaming and building cow walls and wondering “what am I meant to do with these awesome powers” gee if only there had been some context clues, JOHN.

hey, you're not failing. You're just responding to an environment engineered to consume you.
Stand up, go get a drink of water, you're not a failure. Society is.

Trump solicited about $1 billion from Big Oil at a fundraising conclave at Mar-a-Lago in return for future favorable treatment — if their filthy lucre helps him return to the Oval Office.
We lost four years fighting climate change during the previous Trump administration. A second term would do the planet grievous harm.
It's necessary to alert everybody concerned about the future of Earth of the danger of a second Trump presidency.
A new Washington Post report that Trump made explicit policy promises to a roomful of Big Oil executives—while urging them to raise $1 billion for his campaign—is a powerful story in part because it wrecks what’s left of that mystique. In case you didn’t already know this, it shows yet again that if Trump has employed that aforementioned knowledge of elite corruption and self-dealing to any ends in his public career, it’s chiefly to benefit himself. That counter narrative is a story that Democrats have a big opportunity to tell—if they seize on this news effectively. How might they do that? For starters, the revelations seem to cry out for more scrutiny from Congress. Democratic Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, who has been presiding over hearings into the oil industry as chair of the Budget Committee, says it’s “highly likely” that the committee will examine the new revelations. [ ... ]
As the Post reports, an oil company executive at the gathering, held at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort last month, complained about environmental regulations under the Biden administration. Then this happened: Trump’s response stunned several of the executives in the room overlooking the ocean: You all are wealthy enough, he said, that you should raise $1 billion to return me to the White House. At the dinner, he vowed to immediately reverse dozens of President Biden’s environmental rules and policies and stop new ones from being enacted, according to people with knowledge of the meeting, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe a private conversation. Giving $1 billion would be a “deal,” Trump said, because of the taxation and regulation they would avoid thanks to him, according to the people. Obviously industries have long donated to politicians in both parties in hopes of governance that takes their interests into account, and they explicitly lobby for this as well. But in this case, Trump may have made detailed, concrete promises while simultaneously soliciting a precise amount in campaign contributions.
Just a mention that Tumblr formatting won't permit indentations inside indentations. As a substitute, I used red to depict double indentation.
Anyway...
For instance, the Post reports, Trump vowed to scrap Biden’s ban on permits for new liquefied natural gas exports “on the first day.” He also promised to overturn new tailpipe emission limits designed to encourage the transition to electric vehicles, and he dangled more leases for drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, “a priority that several of the executives raised.” “The phrase that instantly came to mind as I was reading the story was ‘quid pro quo,’” Whitehouse told me. He also pointed to a new Politico report that oil industry officials are drawing up executive orders for Trump to sign as president. “Put those things together and it starts to look mighty damn corrupt,” Whitehouse said.
Trump may just be a pile of orange flab with a porcine mouth and bad hair, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't be taken seriously. Among many other bad things, Trump is a figurehead for Big Oil. Oil companies are already busy composing executive orders for Trump to sign.
If elected, Trump would throw into reverse our transition to a decarbonized future, one that’s creating untold numbers of manufacturing jobs—including in the very places that Trump has attacked Democratic elites for supposedly abandoning—all in exchange for mega-checks from chortling fat cats right out of the most garish of Gilded Age cartoons. For good measure, some of that loot could help Trump secure elite impunity for his own corruption and alleged crimes. We can’t say we weren’t warned. Trump has told us all this himself.
Progressives toying with third party temptations need to be set right: The only way to defeat Donald Trump is to vote for Joe Biden.
There will NEVER be a President RFK Jr., a President Jill Stein, or a President Cornel West. Such vanity candidates are usually little more than eccentric freaks. The last time a non-Democrat or non-Republican was elected president was 1848. But with American democracy and the future of the planet at stake, self-indulgence at the ballot box this year could lead directly to dystopia.

This is just kvetching into the void but I periodically see posts on this here internet and website essentially trying to police the terms people use for their own art, ie "you can't call something a doodle if it looks finished (to me)" or "stop doing sketchbook flips that are finished pieces, it's supposed to be doodles and wips in a sketchbook!" and usually there's a reason given about these things setting an unrealistic standard either for other artists, or non-artists, and these irritate the piss out of me every time I fear.
Your 'finished piece' might BE someone's low effort doodle, that's just life sometimes! This is fine! It need not reflect on you!
Similarly, the sketchbook is the medium. Whether it's showcase of completed works or practice sketches is irrelevant. They are showing their sketchbook.
Much of this moaning is indirectly shot at people who are full-time artists, if not professionals, posting online. Are you under the impression their grasp of art terminology is just flat out wrong? Or is it just broader than you would like?
I can't take the fear of unrealistic expectations seriously, sorry. People are very ignorant, yes, but the cure is never a dumbing down of the topic, nor trying in vain to universalize it.
This all kind of wraps into how social media turns people sharing their art into this cut throat arms race, how divorced people become from means of actually learning their craft in that sort of environment, and the, to be blunt, sour grapes that grow from all of this. Sincerely, I just encourage people to worry less about other artists minding their business and focus more on personal growth. Maybe let yourself get inspired! And then we'll both win, because I will see less incessant whining out in the wild!

green or greed (that sounds lame sorry)
I care about the planet so much because it isn’t just mine. It belongs to everything, just as everything belongs to it. The trees, the animals, the rocks, the soil, the people. It all needs a place to live. just because you don’t understand the way nature works when it looks different than you do, doesn’t mean that it doesn’t matter too.
does money matter more than life? Even a person’s?
I don’t want to live on mars. Nothing can change my mind. The Earth is not replaceable. To me.

"While working under Erika Rader, an assistant professor in the Department of Earth and Spatial Sciences at University of Idaho, a postdoctoral researcher identified a volcanic vent on Mars as a potential spatter cone and compared it to a spatter cone formed during the 2021 eruption of Fagradalsfjall in Iceland.
The study is published in the journal Icarus.
Through a detailed morphological investigation and ballistic modeling, Ian T.W. Flynn discovered the Martian volcanic feature strongly resembles spatter cones found on Earth.
"Spatter cones are so common on Earth that it seemed extremely unlikely that they simply didn't exist on Mars," Rader said. "Since spatter cones can only form in the right conditions, their presence gives us a benchmark to shoot for when simulating Martian volcanoes."
Spatter cones are created by hot lumps of flying lava falling to the surface during explosive volcanic eruptions, specifically during sustained periods of lava fountaining. They are common features on Earth—including in Idaho, most notably at Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve—and have long been suspected to be on Mars as well. However, until now, there wasn't solid evidence of their existence.
"The similarity between the Mars and Icelandic spatter cones indicates that the eruption dynamics occurring in Iceland, over the last several years, also occurred on Mars," Flynn said. "This is exciting as it expands the range of volcanic eruption styles possible on Mars.""

Should humans colonize other planets?
Well if we colonize other planets we will get fabulous kinds of opportunities like-
Expansion of Human potential Colonizing other planets could be a way to expand human potential and push the boundaries of what is possible.
Scientific Advancements  Colonizing other planets would present a huge opportunity for scientific research and discovery. We could learn more about planetary formation, the origins of life, and the potential for life elsewhere in the universe.
Resources Some resources maybe there which are not found in Earth like Mars has ice and water.
But if we try colonizing other planets
Environmental Impact forming another planet to make it habitable could have significant and unpredictable environmental consequences. We should be careful not to repeat the mistakes we have made on Earth by damaging other planets' ecosystems.
Cost of money 💷
Risks There are many risks associated with colonizing other planets, such as radiation exposure, extreme conditions.
My Opinion- We should colonize another planet it will have many opportunities but we should do it slowly and vigilantly because there are many risks. Reply what you think?

If this is an *older* gen Z thing then I am definitely a millennial. Either that or my school district had no funding. Perhaps both.
That relatable (older) Gen Z memory: when all the projectors and white boards got replaced by Smart Boards™ around like fifth grade and none of the teachers knew how to use them but they Had To Use them otherwise the school just wasted a bunch of money and it was a rlly weird transition

Reflecting on Difficult Aries Transits
I don’t know about you, but I am more than ready for this extended series of frustrating Aries transits to ride off into the sunset. Yes, astrologer me says that no transit is good or bad, and if I find it difficult, that is because I have made it difficult. Many other people around me have also found it difficult; that’s how these energies affect us. However, Mensch me is just as frustrated as…
