" What the fuck was it all for? "
UNSEEN  WAR.
A  collection  of  angst  prompts  that  delve  into  the  struggles  of  soldiers  facing  PTSD,  survivor’s  guilt,  and  the  lingering  scars  of  war.  Themes  of  mental  health,  trauma,  substance  abuse,  suicidal  ideation,  hypervigilance,  combat,  loss,  identity,  and  alienation.  Feel  free  to  add  your  own  edits  as  wanted  or  needed
heidegger's immediate thought is of all of the speeches he's ever given. when he'd rallied troops, or hell, himself - he'd said that what they were fighting for was 'the greater good', the 'benefit of the company', honour in their homes, their loved ones.
why did any man go to war? because he was brave, noble? - or because a big shot suit sent him there?
heidegger had been on both sides.
fighting side by side with your brothers in arms would have one think that they were righteous - that they were fighting for their friends, comrades they'd consider their family. a man could comfort himself with the knowledge that the hand to have pulled that trigger did so to protect another. nightmares could be quelled with the soft suggestion that if it weren't them dead, it'd be us. the director could wax lyrical on the old mottos he'd dared to believe as a young soldier. he could lie; weave the web that would do its best to ensnare reno with the allure of a myth.
the redhead wouldn't be so stupid.
the truth is that they'd fought for shinra - the company, the man. a place on the board, a steady paycheque. an easier life, fuelled by the lifeblood of the planet. an easy trade when one doesn't care should the world burn.
heidegger had fought for power, strength - chased the dream of enough medals to gain the respect of somebody - but who? men long dead. men who'd not cared even when they were alive.
"what was promised to us-" that's what it had been for - that's how the others had seen it. scarlet, maybe reeve and palmer, too. follow the golden greats in the hope that things would get better. whether that was an upgrade from poverty or finer cut diamonds - as any person, they'd all longed for more. for heidegger - he's never known anything else. forever the loyal hound, forever shinra's faithful stamp.
even when he acknowledges the insanity of the promised land and the ancients, the twisted resurrection of sephiroth, the fall of meteor - even at the end of it all - the end of the world itself - he'd follow shinra as if possessed.
'what the fuck was it all for?'
for heidegger, it was for anything other than mediocrity. it was a chance to be loyal, to mean something to someone he could admire.
"whatever you told yourself would happen-" his voice is flat, his words becoming sharp with a bitter taste that's soon to linger on the tongue "need i remind you -" he turns to face the turk, fangs sharp and eyes pressed beneath narrowed brows "you chose to sign up. you knew your role."
and now they watch a world ending-
"were you ever proud of anything that you did-?" his question is an attempt to rile "ever had...anything to show for it?" a trophy, a medal - money or lovers?
"whatever your answer...that was it-"

haha hi, i present to you a little what if, a little au of mine
So SM accepts the offer of friendship, mainly because PV promised to accept his Deceit (and maybe deep down he just didn't want to be alone), in a way he still sees it as a chance to get PV on his side. He doesn't see the fact that he has to accept his Truth and the 'better' part of their Soul Jam as a threat. After all, it's much easier to fall than to reddem yourself
PV obvioulsy just wants to help MS.
The rest..is kinda the same. At least for now, no one except them knows about their little deal.
Is that make sense, idk to be honest i hope it does cbjb. Let me know if someone would be happy to maybe see more of this au
oh and also bonus for u :>

I’m interested in how both Charles and Edwin treat the whole idea of being “detectives.”  Obviously, they are detectives.  They have formed a detective agency, they run cases, it’s their whole thing; it’s how they spend their afterlives.  But it’s more than just that.
They both take the detective work very seriously.  Edwin comes off, generally, as more serious than Charles about it, with his little asides about being a “proper” detective and the methodical ways he likes to do things, but Charles is clearly into it, too.  And sometimes it feels so clearly like they’re playing at the idea of being detectives that it’s almost like a game or a roleplay for them.  They want to be (and are) detectives, but they are two teenage boys who have styled themselves after the idea of being detectives.  Then there are moments where this “performance” of detective work begins to break down.
For Edwin, this happens earlier in the season.  In the first episode, he admits that the detective work matters because he needs it, emotionally, to matter.  His and Charles’s cases didn’t get solved, no one cared.  He needs someone to care.  That’s his investment in being a detective; its more than just a game for him.  When the Cat King casts his truth spell, this is only built upon.  He says he does the detective work, too, because he wants to stay out of hell.  For a while, though, I was trying to find Charles’s investment.  Yeah, his case was also written off when he died, but didn’t seem as upset about that as Edwin.  On the first watchthrough, I wondered if Charles’s investment in the detective work was simply because Edwin was invested.
Then there’s episode 4, when Charles beats the Night Nurse, and part of the speech he yells at her is about being a detective.  I think that’s when it started to click for me that there was something deeper going on with him, too, about the detective work specifically.  Charles is upset he died, he never came to terms with it.  I wonder if part of the reason he’s so invested in being a detective is because it gives him a sense of purpose and impact that he misses from being alive.  He could never stop the things he wanted to stop, never protect the people he wanted to protect, but at least he has this, with Edwin.  At least they are detectives, and Charles can feel needed, feel like his life didn’t end so early for no reason at all.
I think a lot about the concept of ghosts having unfinished business and how that might apply to both Charles and Edwin, and I think that the detective agency, despite how it sometimes comes off as playacting, is deeply tied to both of their psyches.  Edwin needs the detective agency to feel like there was a point to everything that happened to him.  That maybe no one cared he disappeared, and maybe he ended up in hell, but it wasn’t for nothing.  They can try to keep it from happening to anyone again.  And Charles?  Well, he needs the detective agency because there was no point to what happened to him.  He shouldn’t have died, and he’s not ready to move on to an afterlife.  He needs to feel like he’s needed, like there’s something he can do.  If it hadn’t been a detective agency these two formed, it would have been something else because they had too many deep-rooted issues that have been sublimated into the agency itself.

The way these two scenes are back to back make me sick, the way Sokka is putting on his face paint alone and preparing himself for a one-man fight against what he thinks are ruthless Fire Nation soldiers while Zuko is having his armor put on by his crew, even having them tie the shoes while Sokka does his on his own. Sokka puts on his facepaint alone with his fingers while Zuko gets his helmet put on by the crew. How Sokka has to tie his own armband with one hand and teeth because nobody else is there to do it for him. He has only himself to rely on in this fight, but is completely willing to ready himself like he saw the men of his tribe once did and fight for his tribe despite being knocked down multiple times.
It was a losing battle and he knew it. These people killed his mother, sent his father away and nearly ruined the South. He wasn’t expecting to win.
