I've got a pet theory for the ongoing story in FFXIV.

There are lots of little bits and pieces that alone might just be cute nods, but together make me think that FFXIV is and has been laying the groundwork for an eventual Chrono Trigger-inspired expansion or at least a more significant plot beat.

MAJOR SPOILERS FOR FFXIV THROUGH DAWNTRAIL

One of the key elements is the infamous "keening from the earth" mentioned in relation to the Final Days by one of Emet-Selch's Amaurotine simulacrum Ancients. I say "infamous" because come Endwalker, it felt like a dropped detail -- Meteion didn't really fit that description, and nothing we're told about how those Final Days played out really brings it up again.

But I think another plot element is being hinted at in other places that could very well provide us with the source of that "keening".

It's a little odd that we got another Ronka-esque dungeon at the end of Tender Valley this expac, complete with its own serpent! The Yok Huy simply.. finding the ruins suggests that this ruin and the Ronkan ruins on the first share a common origin -- meaning their inspiration probably comes from before the sundering -- perhaps even from before the Ancients themselves, considering its architecture doesn't really share any similarities with structures we know the Ancients built. That period is a blind spot for everyone.

We learned about something else that existed prior to the Ancients in Endwalker's patches -- The Heart of Sabik, AKA the Black Auracite. It came from somewhere not of Etheirys -- somewhere else in the Sea of Stars -- from, or at least from the same place as, the being known as Ultima.

It's interesting, then, that when Pallas Athena manifests, her arena / realm is not only wreathed with the eye motif from the previous fight with Athena, but also with.. what seems to be the body of an unimaginably large serpent.

To rephrase the idea here, through P12S, the concept of the Serpent is connected both to the Ancients -- beings who lived and worked in places like Elpis, which shares more than a few similarities with the Kingdom of Zeal -- and with a dread being that hails from outer space.

That's what I think is "keening". A great serpent that, long before the disaster of the sundering or even before the Ancients' civilization was the dominant one on the star, burrowed its way deep beneath the crust of the planet.

That's a thought, though: what about the sundering? If this serpent existed beforehand, it would be in a similar state to the one we ultimately find Zodiark in, right? Well, before Dawntrail, we know that the star's been rejoined to its reflections seven times, meaning it's 8/14ths of the way to being "whole" again. And now in Dawntrail, we have Heritage Found, a partial "dimensional fusion" between a shard and the Source.

If this counts as a rejoining without a corresponding calamity, then perhaps in the coming expansions, Preservation will use Dimensional Fusion in their conflict with the WoL and, inadvertently, rejoin the serpent as well. Zero and Golbez's efforts to rebuild the 13th, in combination with Dimensional Fusion, could mean that a total (partial) rejoining actually becomes possible!

So, if you've played Chrono Trigger and you're convinced by all of this, why don't I just come out and call the serpent Lavos?

Well, I'm not sure if SE's going to be quite that explicit.

After all, Krile's parents were named Alayla and Robor, not Ayla and Robo. They have the good sense to obfuscate it at least a little.

Showbitz and Heartbreaker stuff (+ a bit of their creator) ↓

Lets start off with their creator (🙄) Their creator is a young, sad, lonely man named Dennis who spends most of his time indoors working on his own projects and lounging about. He had originally gone to school to become a doctor but instead took more interest in robotics. After graduation, he found a place and experimented with his newfound passion. Bitz would be the first of his bots to be considered a success.

as mentioned in the reference, Bitz was built with the purpose of dealing with heavyweight items and disposing of useless things/trash (crushing with his teeth). During his free time (when not having any orders given to him) he would watch tv or browse the Internet. He learned about the outside world and everything it had to offer this way, and soon he realized he wanted to see it for himself. However, his creator would not allow this in fear that he would get damaged or cause harm in some way. But of course, this wouldn't stop him from trying!

At some point, Dennis ends up building a housekeeper bot to help keep the place tidy and such. Soon enough she and Bitz became acquainted with eachother, and would hang out with eachother more and more on their breaks 😁 with Bitz showing her his favorite things to watch and look at.

Ok ok Fast forward a bit. The two bots both decide they want to run away to see the outside world. They pack up some supplies (including money they had stolen from Dennis lol) and find a way to leave while he was out for errands, it was the perfect opportunity!. They trainhop a few times till they finally reach close to the big city (very far from their home).

Here, they would try their best to figure themselves out and what they want to do (along with trying to get a roof over their heads of course). Days pass and their hopes start to dwindle, until suddenly out of the blue, they get asked to be apart of an ongoing tv show, and immediately take up the offer as long as it provided them with a safe place to stay. Bitz would end up becoming the new host for a popular game show (the show having a robot host as it's main gimmick) with the housekeeper bot (now known as Heartbreaker) as his assistant.

Now, you must be wondering "wow Mari this doesn't really explain why Bitz is the way he is now!" "Why is he passive aggressive nowadays?" "Does Bitz kill people" bear with me Ok.

At some point early into his career he ends up having his trust broken by a Certain Someone. This ordeal causes him to snap and hold a huge grudge towards them. Overtime he would start experiencing hatred for literally anyone he finds even the slightest bit of irritating, including a few of his own contestants or audience members (essentially he becomes corrupt, a Huge Hater, and develops anger issues LOL. You know the "are you tired of being nice don't you just want to go ape shit" meme yea thats basically what's happening).

One day he thought to himself "well why don't I just get rid of these people?" (which would be just. ya know. killing them. crazy i know. but at this point he really doesn't care!). He uses Heartbreaker to do the dirty work for him (hunting them down hitman style) while they're not on the air. She does not mind doing the job, as she does not feel much empathy towards people she doesn't know personally Especially humans (not to mention she also knows how to clean up once its done haha).

Anyways the fame from his show starts getting to Bitz's dumb robot head, which leads to him becoming more egotistical, to the point where he's practically obsessed with himself! He wants everyone to focus on him and him only, it's what he craves most. He would do anything to be the center of attention.

and that's kinda all I have left to say for now. I do plan to draw a few things I purposely left out + things i mentioned here in the future. I also want to make another post about the other bots at some point. Kudos to anyone that was cool enough to read through this dumb thing. thanks

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?

Well, I already made a post a while back about how I headcanon that the highest that Axis can count to is 255, so let's get a bit more serious. I don't think Axis has a "true SOUL" in the sense that monsters and humans have SOULs. In Undertale, SOULs are treated as actual tangible objects that can be held and interacted with (like humans with their persistent SOULs and Boss Monster SOULs that can exist outside of death for a few moments and how Flowey/Asriel pulled the SOULs out of every monster in the Underground when he went god-mode). Axis, meanwhile, is made of metal and magic and computer code, which is detailed enough that it can emulate what it's like to have a SOUL very accurately, but there are limitations (like how he still has to follow his programming and kill Integrity no matter how reluctant he is). Like what Alphys established in Undertale, creating an artificial SOUL (with all the properties of a real SOUL) is impossible. That isn't to say that his life/experiences have less value because he doesn't have a "true SOUL," he still has thoughts and emotions and such, but if he was around a bunch of monsters when Flowey pulled their SOULs out of their body, he would've been stuck there. Conscious. Completely untouched.

(Though considering his speech if he's spared on Neutral, he'll get past it. It's just another thing that makes Axis, Axis.)

20. Which other character is the ideal best friend for this character, the amount of screentime they share doesn't matter?

Kanako and Axis, easily. Have you seen the little drawing that Kanako has of Axis in her room? Surely they must've met before. I bet that Chujin showed Axis off to Kanako to be like "Hey, check out this cool robot that your dad made." and she was like "Did you make a brother for me?!" And Chujin was trying to politely correct her by saying that "Axis is not the same as a child, he's my robot that I made to protect you, yadda yadda" but it's too late now, Chujin. She already has it in mind that Axis is her new sibling. She is already figuring out where to put stickers on his chassis. Axis loved the attention from Kanako as well, there's only one person out there who could "CAPTURE MY LIKENESS SO PERFECTLY."

... After Axis killed Integrity, Chujin cooked up a lie for Kanako about how Axis had to go to the Steamworks to be a guard robot there, since he was frightened of the idea of Axis's code going buggy and him attacking Kanako. "Oh, but don't worry, we can still visit him. Ah, when? Maybe next month, he's very busy." And on Axis's side, most of his memories of his domestic life with Chujin/the Snowdin Incident were sealed so there wouldn't be any risk of him spilling any potentially incriminating information. This included his interactions with Kanako. Then he was shipped off to the Steamworks under the pretense of "Whoops, accidentally stumbled across some of my robotics work that I had taken home and left in a corner of my house when I was still employed here. Here, take him. He's functional."

Yapping Abt my characters: N0va

Sleep position: curled up as much as he can, usually a compact version of the fetal pose when in robor form so he doesn't fuck up his back too much. They are very anxious about having their stomach exposed and cuz they don't want to lay on their stomach because it's hard for him to get up in he's face down. So if he's uncertain or doesn't feel safe, he'll sleep on his side, curled up.

Fidgets: When nervous, he'll play with his fur or hair, rarely his antenna. When he's overwhelmed, he'll gently tug on his antenna, which makes them bend over his face usually. His tail with wrap around his leg or arm if he's nervous or scared

Fur: like a cat or most mammals, when threatened or scared, his fur with stand up. His hair seems to fluff out as well somehow (strange cartoon logic/hj)

Scars: he has a lot of scars, mainly on his shoulders and chest from picking at scabs from acne (like me) but also some scars from accidents he's had. He has one on his right knee from slicing it on a wood bench, two burn scars on his left forearm, scars on three of his knuckles on his left hand from a bike incident (it was actually a scooter but he'll never admit to it) and a few random scars on his fingers that came from picking at them and burning himself with a hot glue gun.

I'm being flooded with robor content all of sudden. There's worse problems to have - in fact, being flooded with robor content is the exact opposite of a problem. The actual problem struts into the room when it's encouraging me in ways I should not be encouraged.

Rayearth is actually what got me into manga and anime in the first place, my library had all 6 books so I'd walk past them on the spinners like almost every day and eventually I was like "This cover is so fucking cool I need to check this out." possibly with a little "I wish I looked as cool as her that my pre trans self didn't figure out. I read it in like 2005 but didn't watch the show until 2019 when Super Robor Wars T was coming out and finally granted my wish of adding Rayearth and I was blown away with how good the anime was too, even in comparison to the manga

How do you feel about the different mental ages of robors

I find it fascinating that each robot has a different mental age despite being just that— a robot.

If you look at it from a broader view, it can actually help fight AGAINST my point of sentient being a physical thing, because the way I view it I like to imagine that their mental age was already decided before sentience, and this just brought it out. Sort of like a predetermined destiny.

However another compelling argument is that the mental age is gained because of the situations they are put into after sentience. And then there are some robots who appear to almost regress in age at some points, depending on the situation. One of my favorite examples of this is the Vivid spybot, who acts like a teenager but will seemingly regress to another age when faced with a difficult or stressful situation if that makes any sense? The utter variety of these guys’ mental maturities are interesting to me, like Otto seems to mentally be somewhere between 13-16?? And Proto is much younger, and then Artificial Medic appears to be somewhere upwards of adulthood.

Sylvester and Esmé are the hardest to place for me and I do not understand why. I could not even give you an age estimate as of now, maybe I am just tired

I am not going to count this as a theory, as it is just a viewpoint without adding any other speculations.

so i've been following the little orange guy, right? a friend tells me he's called iggy

and i've been following the "slugcat pointers" on where to go

but then that CHANGED to what looked like a ROBOR when i got to the shoreline

and GOD what a big area that is, a tangled mess of pipes and sea and eventually it leads me to a strange place thanks to iggy

and i enter that place, and the game tells me it's called "looks to the moon", and i go, oh? the moon? whas that about?

i press further on, continually failing at the parkour, eventually reaching a room with some glowy stars in the background

i thought, cool! and i pressed forward, and i saw

someone else? living??

they seemed a bit scared of me, a fact which was likely aided by the spear i was wielding at the time

and i just kinda, went forward a bit, trying to interact, but they kept shying away

quite a shame, i wanted to be friends

on my way out from their chamber, iggy told me about another one of these things, what seem like robots, back to the left

but i wanted to try and win them over! so i found a gray pearl on the ground and tried to give it to them

unfortunately, the rain had come, and i didn't have any shelter for the night bc i had no food

my cycle started from inside the area, so i figured it was fine, i'd make my way back there

so i uh, died, and they seemed to uh. whatever happened here

i don't know how they have survived this long when it looks like that could snap at any moment due to the pressure

but either way, i explored more of their area, and i found another pearl! a lot more deliberately placed, and yellow in color

i tried giving THAT one to them, and didn't bring my spear this time, but they didn't seem to want my gift. so i left, a bit sad

on my way out, i learned the little jellyfish guys i'd been swimming past in the shoreline were edible! so i was able to shelter for the cycle

and... scug had a dream!! talking with them!! and i got an achievement for making a friend :)

whoever this little robor is, i love them so much, i love their energy i love their vibe i love their design

just. THEM!

and that's where i ended my session!

little bonus log: one of those little axolotl lizards and i managed to shelter together, and i got progress towards an achievement called "the friend"??

they died right after though :( was hoping i could somehow tame it

Thank you for this prompt! I don't know why, but it turned into a musical AU. I hope you like me writing about singing even though I know jack shit about it (apart from my secret singing career in the shower). For @dadrunkwriting on this Friday.

Fenris pinches the bridge of his nose. "You're making this needlessly difficult."

"Am not! I'm really trying to do this right," Anders says, trying to sound certain but failing. Fenris can hear the wavering in his voice. The man better not start crying now. 

Fenris is going to kill Hawke. Slowly. Not only did she ask him to help a friend, fluttering her eyelids at him, the friend turned out to be Anders. There is just something about Anders that makes him nervous. He usually avoids him, even if he had to accept that he is an unremovable part of Hawke's friend group. 

He is obviously educated, knowledgeable about all sorts of different subjects, but he is unable to pronounce the Tevene phrases he brought with him on a sheet of paper. "Let's try this again. Astia valla femundis." He makes sure to articulate every syllable clearly, even exaggerated. 

Anders nods, squares his shoulders — and obliterates the three words in ways that Fenris could not have imagined before. 

"Stop, stop!" Fenris wonders if elves used to be able to fold down their ears. What a useful feature that would be. He glares at Anders. "How? How do you even do that?"

"I don't know." Anders looks sufficiently sheepish and Fenris can't help but feel sorry for him. The man is perfectly intelligent, annoyingly so sometimes. He should be able to speak a few words in Tevene.

"You have a perfectly normal, if slightly Fereldan accent, but when you speak Tevene you sound like some hick from Texasia." It's almost adorable but he would never admit that to Anders. He looks at the sheet of phrases again. "Try this: Tutum te robore reddam, semper habebis liberatem."

He tries not to wince, but what Anders does with these words would probably be considered an insult in Minrathous. He is hopeless. Fenris pinches his nose again. "What are these expressions, anyway? I will give you safety by strength, you will always have freedom."

Anders falls into a stuffed chair and leans his head back. "It's a musical. I'm friends with the director and, well not the lead, but one of the bigger side-characters got into an accident last night and she asked me to help out, and —"

Fenris drops his hand. "You're meant to sing this?"

"Yes?" Anders looks confused.

Before he can pinch his nose again and possibly hurt himself, Fenris flexes his fingers a few times. "Singing uses an entirely different part of your brain than speaking does. Why didn't you say so?"

"Oh fuck, I forgot about that." Anders slaps his forehead. "I heard that before at the hospital. Okay, hang on." 

Anders jumps up and grabs the sheet of paper from Fenris hand and strikes a pose. He looks taller, stronger, his expression calm and convincing. He takes a deep breath, hums the beginning of a melody and then starts to sing.

"Donum habeo tibi, amatus. Amor est fortior quam mors. Tutum te robore reddam, semper habebis liberatem."

I have a gift for you, beloved. My love is stronger than death. I will give you safety by strength, you will always have freedom.

Anders' voice is incredible. He fills the too large hall of Fenris' decrepit house with the melody, warm, strong, beautiful. It echoes off the walls, almost humming in Fenris' chest. He sings of love and freedom and Fenris realises after the second verse that his pronunciation is perfect. 

Anders stops, smacking his lips a few times. "Was that okay?"

Fenris realises that his mouth hangs open and snaps it shut. "It was... adequate."

That was not the praise Anders had been hoping for, judging by the way his shoulders sink down. "Well, let me try again, I think I can do better on that rolling R."

"Yes, please, go ahead," Fenris says. His throat is scratching more than usual and he takes a long sip of water. 

Anders starts singing again. This time, his voice is even more like velvet, the words rolling gently from his tongue, dancing along the melody. There is a spot at the centre of Fenris' chest that flutters in an unfamiliar way as he listens. Anders looks at him the whole time, as if he sings just for him. 

"That was wonderful," Fenris says, when the last sound of Anders' singing slips from the air. "Your pronunciation was very good."

"Thank you. I'm glad I won't be embarrassing everybody tomorrow." Anders looks at him a while longer and then turns away, hiding behind strains of blonde hair falling into his face. "Maybe you want to come to the show tomorrow? It's at 19:00, I can reserve a ticket at the door for you."

"Yes," Fenris says after a short hesitation. "I would like that."

"Good." Anders grabs his papers and shoves them into his backpack. "Thank you for your help." He starts to walk past Fenris but stops, leans over, and brushes a tiny kiss on Fenris' cheek. "See you tomorrow then."

Fenris is too stunned to answer. He watches Anders rush out, his fingertip hovering over the spot where Anders' lips were just a moment ago. 

He might not avoid Anders anymore.

this is like that one time van asked this one AI i cant remember the name of but its the one that just spews gibberish based on random data it finds online yk yk the green text one i forgor and van asked it if AIs n robots could possiblt develop mental illness and it said yah but itd be different than how humans experience mental illness bcos we function on organic brain chem basis and theyd have a more electical approach which tbh is still fairly human bcos our neurons are. just electricity when u think abt it
