My Selfships And Polyamory

Because I'm poly and so are most of my selfships! Just wanted to chat about that because I feel like I mostly talk about my relationships with my f/os and don't always include to what degree they're open/closed.

Tate- we're definitely primary partners, but both have secondary relationships with other ghosts in the house that are kind of nebulously romantic/platonic (both with Nora, me with Moira).

Grell- monogamous in action, but we hype each other's crushes up and try to manipulate situations to get each other trapped with object of affection. It just never actually works out.

Toshinori- monogamous in like 90% of universes but there's a little wiggle room for other teachers to get in there and form a triad.

Shigaraki- monogamous, actually!

Toga- closed polycule with the League of Villains, some of us seek casual partners outside as well but it's strictly one nights unless they get accepted into the group.

Jester- open poly relationship -- we've both had additional romantic relationships, and weren't originally primary partners, but we've nested together now <3

Dirk- both of us have too much damn baggage to be pursuing relationships. Might be poly in the future in the pity quadrants, but I think we're good and settled for the hate quadrants.

Most of my Hazbin/Hellaverse selfships are actually secondary or non-romantic relationships: all of the characters have more primary relationships, with the exception of my selfship with Emberlynn, which is open but in a college experimentation kind of way.

Ms Frizzle- romantically monogamous, and have settled down into general monogamy in 90% of cases. We both still occasionally do club/play nights, but it's rarer.

Zero- Exactly the same as Val, ironically enough: when we got together two decades ago, there was a lot more focus on the open elements of our relationship, but now we're staying home more often.

Death- I don't think we originally considered ourselves as primary/committed partners, but neither of us have really been doing relationships outside of each other, either. I fell for her pretty hard, to the exclusion of a lot of things in my life. But we don't see each other super often!!!!

There are some interesting* things to note here, so I added them under the cut. It turns out counting them was actually more complicated than I thought it would be!

So, things to note:

Chess Choco is counted as one simply because in-game they are counted as one character when you play as them

The minions also count as one because there’s too damn many of them jdhvjndsj (and there’s no real way to know just how many there are)

The Halberd Crew (the Meta-Knights) also count as one because I don’t know how many of them there are djbcjsjds (and also it isn’t always clear if they count as individuals themselves or if they’re part of a species similar to Toad from Mario)

I have quite a few f/os who are counted together on my f/o list, but individually here (Bowser Jr + the Koopalings; the twin pots; Rabbid Mario, Peach, and Luigi; Lock, Shock, and Barrel; and the Saiyans)

Deltarune and Undertale are counted as separate fandoms since one, I count them as separate when I tag them on my blog jdbcjds and two, my f/os from Deltarune are exclusive to it (Susie and Lancer) so I see no need to count them as part of Undertale

“Smash Bros” is considered its own fandom for me because I only know my f/os from it since I never played their respective games (Ness and Lucas from Earthbound and Bayonetta from Bayonetta)

Technically I have played the first Bayonetta, but that was after she became my f/o from Smash Bros and I don’t consider myself part of her fandom

Pokemon includes Serperior and Celebi, my two partners. I have waaaay more pokemon who I love dearly, but I don’t count them just yet since I don’t know yet how many are “canon” to my s/i

I did not include a loooot of characters who would go in my “misc cc” tag. I only included the ones who are actually on my f/o list (plus Serperior and Celebi who are not on my list at the moment)

Previous Selfships Through The Years

I got some hatemail so I'm taking that as an invitation to be even more self-indulgent than usual ^-^ As I've mentioned on this blog, I've been a selfshipper for basically as long as I've been a reader/writer, so this is a look backwards at some of my strongest early selfships! Because I just started drawing a few years ago, none of these made their way into art until this very moment.

Age 6: Sparr, from the Droon books. He's a villain who's very dangerous and his little fins behind his ears flash different colours when he feels strong emotions and he was trying to kidnap the princess and I was simply head over heels. Many of my early journals are fictional entries about running away with Sparr and living with him in his silly eight-wheeled yellow car. I wrote this story over and over again, page after page. I wrote about how happy we were together and that I would never go home again. My parents drew me birthday cards with Sparr on them.

Age 8: A fiery redhead from a mystery book series! My journal entries about her were some of the things that later clued me in that I was gay. I wrote several journals about how much I wanted to kiss her and live in her world. I even told people in my class that I wanted to date her, which made them tease me a lot. But I didn't give up on her!

Age 12: The absolute turning point for me, the age where I really started to feel 'wrong' compared to my peers, and I fell in love with the Joker as my saviour from the social norms I didn't feel capable of upholding. I had just found out about fanfiction at age 11 and I started writing all kinds of self-insert fics with The Joker where I was a daughter of a Gotham businessman. I never published any of them, or read anyone else's fics at the time because The Joker felt too personal for me, but it was a defining experience for me: finding comfort in fandom and specifically selfshipping during the first wave of mental health struggles that would carry me through my teenage years.

Age 15: Demon!Dean Winchester, Supernatural. By this point I was fully into online fandom spaces and had fallen out of selfshipping because it wasn't very popular: but I went through a phase where I would write all my favourite characters as demons because all I really wanted was more of demon!dean and I didn't feel able to acknowledge how much I really wanted to write about him because, again, it felt too personal to really share. Looking back, it was definitely a selfship that I was just too nervous to explore at the time.
