i’d love to say that no one warns you about missing out on something/someone you didn’t know you needed, but you know who did warn us? pop punk songs, and we just didn’t listen closely enough until we were already there

So we may need to think of ourselves as always living a double life, the one that we wish for and the one that we practice; the one that never happens and the one that keeps happening.
— Adam Phillips, Missing Out: In Praise of the Unlived Life (Picador, December 31, 2013) (via Whiskey River)

Okay, I’m gonna make a post that I hope makes sense because I’ve been thinking about this the whole day and it’s wracking me…
I hate when people say shit like “don’t worry, you are not missing on anything” and it becomes especially horrible when the person who says that has gone through that experience. It sounds very hypocritical. Okay, maybe they are right and that particular experience isn’t as special or fun as it may appear buuuuut they did it and so they know it for sure or they are just lying and it is actually an important experience.
When I would complain, as a child, because I couldn’t do or was denied an experience because of my disability, hearing that sentence didn’t help me at all. Honestly, it’s no consolation.
What if it actually was something special that would leave an important mark in my life? And I can’t have it. I mean, wouldn’t I have the right to be sad, angry, furious?
People usually say it to shut your feelings (at least that was the case with me) and the only thing that it achieved for me was making me sadder or angrier.
Let people grieve and be furious if their situation makes it impossible for them to do something they would like to try. Because yes, they are “missing on something”, even if it’s small and stupid and not fun at all. But they wouldn’t know, would they?

Being a Christian is like the saddest thing I can think of not only do you have to completely shut down your critical thinking your world stays the same size and shape ever get to learn you never get to expand your brain, you can't get curious about how other people who are living there lives do things because that would be associating with sinners, you can't even watch TV shows and movies and listen to songs if you don't support the entertainer! Like honestly tomorrow I think about it the more it's just sad, the world is so big and bright and colorful and there's so many amazing people who believe differently or not at all, and that's what makes it so amazing, and if you're a Christian lots of times you miss out on all of that

Throwback to two weeks ago and when I stood in front of my advanced English class letting Missing Out by Maya Hawke play. We talked about the Beatles week prior and my teacher wanted all of us to choose whatever song, analyze the rest and present it in front of the class (graded or not. Up to us).
So my ass ofc used some Maya song. I picked missing out cuz maybe some know it and you can also find part definitions on the internet. With the very little information I found, Chat GPT and some own thinking skills I presented it.
I was nervous as hell cause I can't speak in front of people but 12/15 :3 couldn't be happier tbh!!
